The Brenner Railway forms a section of one of the most
important European railway connections. As part of the Berlin-
Palermo railway axis, it connects Munich via Innsbruck directly
with Verona and then with Bologna.
The railway line was built between the years 1864 and 1867 by
the Südbahngesellschaft under the direction of Karl Etzel. It
runs from Innsbruck over the Brenner Pass and Bolzano to
Verona. The route runs through North and South Tyrol into
Trentino before ending in Veneto. This railway line leads
through the Wipp, Eisack and Etsch valleys.
As part of the Brenner Base Tunnel project, extensive tunnel
sections have been under construction since 2007. This tunnel
will significantly increase the capacity and speed on the Brenner
route.
The route from Innsbruck to Franzensfeste will be 55 km long,
and including the Innsbruck bypass it will be 64 km. The
planned opening is scheduled for the year 2032. In addition,
further access routes are planned on the southern ramp of the
Brenner Railway, including tunnels on the Franzensfeste-
Waidbruck route.
