Have you ever had
afternoon tea? I’m not
talking about a cup
of chamomile at 3:30
p.m.—I mean the 19thcentury
social ritual, once reserved for
the upper class, complete with a tiered
tower of sweet and savory bites, plus
a proper pot of tea. My first encounter
was in Sydney, Australia, circa 2007,
at one of their most prestigious fivestar
hotels. Don’t be mistaken, though.
I wasn’t there nibbling crustless
cucumber sandwiches and slathering
warm citrus scones with whipped
Chantilly crème—I was serving them.
As a young college grad on a
working holiday visa, I knew next
to nothing about the tradition and
certainly didn’t have the budget to
indulge in such an elegant affair. Yet
there I was: pouring tea, popping bottles of Veuve Clicquot, and presenting silver
trays to Sydney’s socialites. I remember wondering why such a sophisticated and
scrumptious activity that encourages participants to slow down and be present
with the people around them wasn’t as beloved back home.
Fast forward nearly two decades, and afternoon tea is finally gaining steam
here in the States—and not just in big cities or luxe resorts. Locally, several spots
are hopping aboard the tea-and-crumpet train, including literal trains, like West
Sac’s River Fox Train and the Napa Valley Wine Train. In “Tea Time” (page 78),
Caitlin Emmett writes about seven nearby venues where you can put your pinkies
up and partake in the beloved British pastime—including a Taylor Swift-inspired
“SwiftTeas” experience in Folsom, featuring music, kid-approved treats, and more.
Are you more into slurping soup than sipping tea? Don’t miss “Winter
Warmers” (page 82), where Sharon Penny rounds up eight
of the region’s best bowls of ramen. If you think ramen
“Almost
stops at instant noodles and salt-bomb seasoning packets,
everything will think again—your broth-loving mind is about to be blown.
work again if Another surefire way to warm up this winter? Move
you unplug it for more. If a gym membership isn’t in the cards, but you’re
a few minutes, still seeking community and a caloric burn, check out
including you.” Emily Peter-Corey’s article, “Health Clubs” (page 22),
—Anne Lamott which spotlights six local groups offering fun, fitness, and
friendship—no contracts or intimidating locker rooms
required.
And finally, if your New Year’s resolution includes cutting back on constant screen
time (same), our Health & Wellness story, “Digital Detox” (page 34), is a must-read.
Kourtney Jason interviews local experts about the toll technology can take, what
happens when we unplug, and simple ways to reclaim your time and attention. As
one of the professionals wisely puts it: “Technology is a gift, but so is peace, presence,
laughter, and real connection.”
And really—couldn’t we all use a little more of that in 2026? Consider this your
gentle nudge to log off, sip some tea, and savor the moment…and this month’s
magazine. Cheers!

What’s your
secret to surviving
winter?
“Puzzles, reality TV, and books are
my go-tos when the weather
outside is frightful! I like to
read books before a movie
version comes out, so
I've already finished The
Housemaid; I'm about to
start reading book two: The
Housemaid's Secret.”
—Caitlin Emmett

The Real Housewives of

“A warm shot of espresso!
I’ve recently dialed in my
machine, and it’s part of
my morning routine.”
—Kyle Hale
“Mad Men reruns. Although
it feels strange to call it
a comfort or ‘feel-good’
show, it puts my stressed
mom brain at ease. I love
the storylines, characters,
and mid-century aesthetic.”
—Emily Peter-Corey
“Baking! My five-year-old son
recently shared in class that he
loves my banana bread. With
that in mind, I’m having
fun seeing what other
baked goods he’ll enjoy;
so far, we’ve baked pies,
cookies, and more banana
bread!”—Shawna Nenni

Mendocino
EXPLORE
County
by CAITLIN EMMETT
Mendocino County: its
beauty is unmatched,
the food and drinks
are ample, and
there’s no shortage
of year-round events.
With all it has to
offer, Mendocino
is also a place of
much-needed postholidays
respite.
“Mendocino has a
way of grounding
you back to yourself.
You slow down. You
breathe deeper. You
remember what
really matters,” shares
Visit Mendocino
County’s Instagram
account. Whether
you’re looking for a
little R&R, a refreshing
outdoor adventure,
or something inbetween,
read
on for 10 top
recommendations.
On your ride in, set the tone for your
getaway at Gowan’s Heirloom Cider
(gowansheirloomcider.com), the first-ever
cider tasting orchard in the state. They’ve
recently won “Best Cidery of the Year” by
both the American Cider Association and
th Great American Beer Festival; there’s no
bad choice, but offerings include everything
from a classic dry cider to a rosé cider.
Reservations to sip underneath an apple tree
are recommended.
New Kid on the Block ▲
Modern coastal designs paired with
natural materials and a boutique feel
can be found at Mendocino Cove Resort
(mendocinocove.com). Newly opened this
past November, expect 50 guest rooms,
an immersive coastal escape, ocean
views, a wellness-focused spa, restaurant
with locally inspired cuisine, and curated
experiences highlighting the area’s coastal
beauty. There’s also an eight-court pickleball
complex—and it’s free for guests to use.
Bountiful Blooms ▲
Peruse 47 acres of botanical beauty at the
Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens
(gardenbythesea.org). The mild climate
allows this oasis to stay open for yearround
visits. Depending on the season,
what you see may change, but expect
native flora, conifers, magnolias, flowerfilled
coastal bluffs, fern-covered canyons,
rhododendrons, and more. There are over
four miles of trails to walk through, so
comfortable shoes are recommended.
Scenic Ride ▲
The Historic Skunk Train (skunktrain.com)
has been in operation since 1885—and you
can experience the same pristine views that
haven’t changed much. See old-growth
redwood groves, trestle bridges, tunnels,
and more as you head through Noyo River
Canyon. Rides are family- and Fido-friendly!
Fort Bragg train departures cover seven
miles of beauty and take about an hour and
a half. Rail bikes are also available should
you want some exercise with your views.

Birdies in Nature ▲
Little River Inn Golf (littleriverinn.com/
golf) was born in 1957 after the Inn’s
owner was inspired by watching Arnold
Palmer play golf on TV (aren’t we all?).
After some initial pushback that no one
would want to golf in this location, he
found coastal contractors to assist. The
nine-hole course brings everything from
ocean views to grazing deer and is an
Audubon-certified sanctuary, which
demonstrates responsible environmental
management practices.
Let There Be Light ▲
A trip to the coast calls for lighthouse
exploring—and Point Cabrillo Light
Station (pointcabrillo.org), a California
State Historic Park, is just the ticket. Here,
you can see the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse
and explore the dog-friendly first floor.
Furry friends can also stay overnight at a
few of the property’s lightkeeper rental
homes. Full, docent-led tours (no infants
or dogs allowed)—with the chance to
climb to the top of the lighthouse tower
and stand next to the historic 1909 Fresnel
lens—are available on select weekends
throughout the year.
Michelin-Star Dining ▲
An elevated coastal dining experience
awaits at The Restaurant at Harbor
on natural sources of heat through fire
and steam to highlight the true taste
of North Coast terrain ingredients. The
menu changes seasonally, but expect
items like fried and infused maitake
mushrooms with purple sea urchin or
seeded sourdough with cultured sea
lettuce butter.
Tree-Mendous ▲
The Inn at Newport Ranch
(theinnatnewportranch.com) blends the
best of Mendocino County scenery: a
mile and a half of rugged ocean bluffs
and ample old-growth redwoods. And
with 2,200 acres, there’s no shortage
of space here. When selecting

Folsom Run Collective
“Clubs”
You may have rung in the
New Year at a club, but how
about joining one this year?
Our region is home to a wide
range of community-focused
health and fitness groups
where you can try something
new or build stamina in a
sport you already love. From
total beginners to seasoned
pros, everyone’s welcome—
and the vibe is simple: show
up, give it a go, and have fun.
Folsom Pickleball Club
by EMILY PETER-COREY
Running may seem intimidating, but not with Folsom Run
Collective (@folsomruncollective). The popular group was started
almost two years ago and is built on a foundation of accessibility,
support, and connection. They meet every Monday evening at varying
spots in Folsom, and welcome anyone (all ages, all abilities) who
wants to move their body and connect with a community. There is no
cost to join and no pressure to perform perfectly. Founder Naz Batta
shares, “To the community, FRC symbolizes unity. It bridges ages,
backgrounds, and lifestyles. It inspires wellness, builds confidence,
and strengthens relationships. It’s proof that movement brings people
together—and that when we run together, we rise together.”
The Folsom Pickleball Club (folsompickleballclub.org) is a
nonprofit that not only supports growth of the sport locally but also
helps the City of Folsom manage and maintain 12 public pickleball
courts at Lembi Park. While Lembi Park is open to all, if you join the
Folsom Pickleball Club for $75 a year, you get access to free drill
sessions led by certified instructors, as well as competitive and social
events. Membership is open to ages 16 and older, all skill levels are
welcome, and play is available every day with “prime time” (when
the courts are busiest) from 9-11 a.m. and 6-8 p.m. Be sure to partake
in their free “Introduction to Pickleball” class that is open to nonmembers
if you’re new. President Duane Chinnow says: “This club
is an opportunity to bring together like-minded people who love the
sport of pickleball and want to share it with others. We’re fortunate to
have attracted a wonderful core group of players who have created
something special that benefits the entire community.”
The aptly named Just Fore Fun Roseville Women’s Golf
Group (meetup.com/just-fore-fun-roseville-womens-golf-group) began
in 2013 to bring together women who enjoy the game of golf in a nopressure
setting. They play “ready golf” (meaning whoever is ready to
safely hit or putt can go) to keep up a good pace but also try not to rush
players. Just Fore Fun meets regularly every Tuesday morning at Indian
Creek Country Club in Loomis to play nine holes, in addition to playing
other local courses during the week. Membership is $10 per year and
any level of golfer over the age of 21 can join. Lynn Mann, who currently
runs the group, says, “This group means a lot to me, because I have
met so many wonderful women [who I] enjoy playing [golf] with. We

Sierra TrailBlazers (sierratrailblazers.
org) is a community of runners who walk,
jog, and run throughout the Sierra Nevada
and surrounding foothills. Based in Nevada
City, the group currently has 187 members
whose interests range from simple jogs
and 5Ks all the way to hiking and 100-mile
runs (and beyond!). The club was started
50 years ago simply to create a community
who wanted to run. The cost is $25—per
family of six, per year—and anyone can join,
but those under 16 years old need to have
a parent running with them. They have
weekly runs in the mornings and evenings
and encourage any member to lead a run
if desired. Vice President Karen Henderson
says: “The club is a running foundation
to the community and especially to new
runners. Between our organized track
workouts and the trails programs, in
addition to training, we encompass an
avenue for runners to network with others
and find new running friends.”
If you’re looking for a low-impact
exercise that also provides plenty of fun and
friendship, check out Mavericks Square
Dance Club (mavericks-squaredance.
org). Twelve weeks of lessons—held
Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at
Sierra TrailBlazers
the Roseville Veterans Memorial Hall
in Royer Park—is $60, and new classes
begin January 21. You don’t even need to
have a partner to learn—Mavericks has
skilled dancers who can help you. Anyone
in good health is welcome to join and
experience the joy that square dancing
brings. Mavericks began over 60 years ago,
and President Jan Warren-Catlin explains:
“Back in the beginning, square dancing
was a popular activity that brought people
together to provide friendship, fun, and a
low-impact physical and mental exercise.
Today, we’re continuing this great activity
for the same reasons.” Check out other
Associated Square Dancers of Superior
California (ASDSC) clubs in Shingle
Springs (Sierra Squares) and Placerville
(Apple Jacks N Jills) at asdsc.org.
Yoga Moves Us (yogamovesus.org), a
nonprofit serving the greater Sacramento
area, aims to remove financial and
accessibility barriers to yoga and wellness.
Mavericks Square Dance Club
For the past decade, they’ve operated
solely on donations and volunteers in an
aim to support health and community.
“What began as a passion project and
a place for newer teachers to grow has
evolved into something much larger. We
now collaborate with organizations that
assist underserved, under-resourced
communities and have a volunteer base
of over 100 people,” explains President
Michelle Marchan Webb. In the winter,
classes are held on Sundays at 9 a.m. at
Arden Fair Mall (first and third Sundays)
and Ritual Wellness House (second and
fourth Sundays). From April through
October, around 12 weekly classes are
held at different parks throughout the
region. Yoga styles vary depending on
the teacher, giving everyone a chance to
practice all aspects of the exercise, from
vinyasa to gentle flow and even sound
bath experiences.

Spotlight on
Kayla Cruz
by JENNIFER MARAGONI
Self-taught abstract artist Kayla Cruz doesn’t just paint
pictures—she processes her thoughts and emotions on
canvas. But beyond self-expression, Cruz says each piece
is an “invitation for others to feel something too, to find
their own story and connection within the piece.”
A lifelong creative who dabbled in many art forms as
a child, then earned a degree in architecture and interior
design, and started a residential remodeling company,
Cruz says she returned to painting as an adult “to calm
me, to unwind, and to express myself.”
And once she started, she couldn’t stop. “I realized how
happy it made me, and I wanted to share my craft with the
world. That’s when I decided to become a full-time artist,”
she recalls.
Cruz calls her process “messy, chaotic, and
unpredictable,” adding that it “somehow comes together in
a way that feels both beautiful and cohesive.” Although she
primarily paints with acrylic, she incorporates a variety of
materials into her mixed-media pieces.
Cruz sells originals and prints on her website
(kaylacruzart.com), and two of her originals are on
display at Roku Japanese Cuisine in Roseville. She also
participated in the Placer Artists Tour for the first time
this past November and will be showcasing her work at
San Francisco’s “The Superfair” from March 19-22 at the
Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture.
You say that creating
abstract art enables you
to bring your imagination
and emotions to life.
Tell us more.
Abstract art gives shape
to what can’t always be
expressed with words.
My process begins with
freedom and intuition,
letting paint flow across the
canvas, creating unexpected
shapes and movement that
show me what direction to
take next. Living with ADHD, my mind is always moving,
and painting becomes a way to translate that constant
stream of energy and emotion into color, texture, and
movement. Each layer reflects a moment of thought or
feeling, coming together in harmony.
What inspires you?
I consider myself an intuitive artist. I let the canvas
tell me my next move and what direction to take until
completion. The studio is my playground, my laboratory,

and my classroom. It challenges me, teaches me,
and it’s a place where I can experiment with colors
and mediums. With that said, my inspiration, I
would say, involves intuition, curiosity, emotions,
and what I see during the painting process through
the movement of colors and textures on the canvas.
Describe your process.
I don’t sketch or plan, I just start. I let the colors and
textures move, and then I follow them. Sometimes
I work fast and loose; other times I slow down and
layer with intention. The painting almost tells me
what it needs next. That freedom to move and shift
is essential; it’s how I process my thoughts and
emotions. Each piece becomes a reflection of that journey.
What do you wish more people understood about
abstract art?
That it’s deeply personal, not careless or random. It might
look spontaneous, but it’s rooted in intention, balance,
and emotion. It’s a conversation between the artist and
the canvas. It’s not meant to confuse; it’s meant to connect.
That’s the beauty of abstract art. As the artist, I can create
a painting [from] emotions of loss and
heartbreak, while the viewer sees and
feels hope, beauty, and gratitude. Abstract
art doesn’t need to be ‘figured out,’ it’s an
experience. Instead of searching for meaning,
feel the emotions and energy it gives you.
What elements do you use in your
mixed-media pieces?
I’ve used foil, paper, glue, wood stain, epoxy
resin, alcohol ink, sand, plaster, and joint
compound. I want to expand into using
fabric, netting, metal, shipping materials
(like foam and cardboard), and other
everyday items we use and throw away that would add
amazing depth and texture to a painting.
You also paint landscapes and dogs. What appeals to
you about these subjects?
I love that I have a wide range of styles, techniques, and
skills. I want to show my viewers and collectors that I am
a very versatile artist. Sometimes I hit a creative block
with abstract paintings, so changing it up by doing a
landscape, dog, or a character in my new Mini Me series
gives me a nice little break. Then I can go back to an
abstract with a fresh outlook.
What’s the best compliment you could receive about
your art?
It means everything when I see someone have an
emotional connection with my work—when I watch
them stare at a painting for what seems like hours then
they leave feeling inspired, in good spirits, and have
experienced something new. But the best compliment is
when someone chooses my artwork to be a part of their
world—when they connect to a painting such that they
want to purchase it and bring it home. This makes them a
part of my art journey, and for that I am truly grateful.

on social media, not in person
Keith A. Hale (“Coach Keith”), a bestselling
author, TEDx speaker, and selfrelationship
coach, says, “The sign that it’s
become unhealthy is having feelings of
not knowing what to do without it.”
For many patients, that dependence
shows up as brain fog, decision fatigue,
and cognitive overload. Others describe
themselves as “tired but wired,”
or physically exhausted, mentally
overstimulated, and unable to truly relax.
Family and internal medicine
physician Lacey E. Neufeld, DNP, FNP,
associate foundation medical director
at the Family and Internal Medicine
Placerville Clinic, sees the physical side
up close. She points to eye strain, neck
and wrist pain, headaches, shifting sleep
patterns, weight gain, and even increased
risk of blood clots from too much
sitting. Emotionally, she sees anxiety,
depression, irritability, and social
withdrawal, especially in kids.
“It can become unhealthy when we
lose our body and brain’s own innate
ability to be curious, explore, grow, and
experience new things,” Dr. Neufeld says.
“The primary one is noticing that we
don’t know what to do with ourselves
when we unplug.”
Nancy Ryan, LMFT and CEO of The
Relationship Therapy Center, calls it
“technoference.” “Our devices connect us
to the world and disconnect us from the
room,” she says. “Our relationship with
technology has shifted from helpful tools
to default habits.”
You don’t have to look far to see it. People
bent over phones in restaurant booths,
kids hunched over tablets in shopping
carts, adults scrolling in bed long after
they meant to be asleep. Screens are
taking over our lives and impacting the
way we find connection with others.
“Technology has become so tied to
our daily lives that it’s hard to separate
what’s ‘normal’ from what’s draining
us,” says Carolyn Whiteman, LMFT,
a marriage and family therapist in
Roseville. “It’s not the tech itself that’s
the problem, it’s how constant and
consuming it’s become.”
Local mental health and wellness
experts agree that you don’t need to
go off the grid, but you probably do
need a reset.
RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR
“Tech used to be a convenience. Now, it
feels basically like a clingy best friend
who never takes a hint,” says La Viola
Ward, Licensed Professional Clinical
Counselor (LPCC) and PsyD candidate at
Dignity Health’s Children’s Behavioral
Health Center in Rancho Cordova. “We
don’t just use our devices anymore; we
live through them.”
A few red flags they see often:
• Feeling anxious or irritated when your
phone isn’t nearby
• Losing track of time scrolling
• Struggling to focus, even during
downtime
• Snapping at people for no clear reason
• Realizing you “see” your friends mostly
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CUT BACK
In good news, even small pullbacks
from screens can make a noticeable
difference. “Short-term: Your brain
actually gets a rest!” Ward says. “You may
notice you’re able to get better sleep, feel
less stressed, and [are] more present in
the moment.”
Whiteman says people typically
feel calmer and more focused quickly.
“Sleep also tends to improve [fairly fast],”
she says. “Over time, they notice deeper
connections with others, more creativity,
and more space to think and breathe. It’s
like rediscovering parts of yourself that
got buried under constant noise.”
Hale hears similar reports from
clients. “Improved sleep, better focus,
lower anxiety, increased patience,”

he says. With fewer dopamine spikes
from endless scrolling, he explains,
the nervous system has a chance to
settle, which supports better mood
and resilience.
Dr. Neufeld emphasizes the sleep
piece. “Reducing screen time and
unplugging greatly impacts our sleep.
Sleep is like putting gas in the car,” she
says. “Without it, we break down, we
can’t go as far as we would like daily or
in our overall goals, because we just run
out of stamina.”
Less time online also leaves more
energy for real-life relationships. As
Hale puts it, unplugging means “more
eye contact with less nervousness, fewer
distractions, feeling more valued and
understood...better communication,
stronger intimacy, and more patience
with your children.”
FIRST STEPS FOR A DIGITAL RESET
All five experts agree that you don’t need
a dramatic “all or nothing” detox. You
need boundaries.
Whiteman suggests starting small.
“Choose one part of your day to go
screen-free, like no phone for the first
30 minutes after waking up or putting
it away during meals. You don’t have to
do a total detox; it’s more about building
awareness and giving yourself moments
of quiet again.”
Ryan recommends simple
experiments. “Silence notifications
on your phone for a day and see if the
world still goes on.” She also suggests
stopping all screens 30 minutes before
bed and swapping them for a cup of tea,
stretching, or talking with your partner.
Hale likes clear, physical cues. “Pick
an area of your home where screens
aren’t allowed, like your bedroom,
bathroom, or dinner table,” he says.
“Turn off notifications from social
media, and email alerts after business
hours. Create a ‘Phone Parking Spot’ in
your home, so you break the habit of
unnecessary scrolling and can’t reach
for it first thing in the morning.”
Dr. Neufeld recommends getting
honest with the numbers. “The easiest
first step is to run a report on your
phone, computer, or tablet to find out
how much screen time you spend every
day,” she says. From there, set gradual
weekly reduction goals and consider
rules like no phones at the dining table
or after a certain time at night.
Ward suggests practical tweaks like
turning off non-emergency notifications,
using “bedtime mode,” and even
switching your phone to grayscale “to
make apps less ‘shiny’ and addictive.”
HELPFUL VS. HARMFUL SCREEN TIME
Not all screen time is the enemy. It’s how
and why you use it. “Ask yourself, does
this calm me down or stress me out? Am
I learning, connecting, or just escaping?”
Ward says.
“If scrolling feels like a void or leaves
you doubting yourself, that’s probably
doing more harm than good.”
Whiteman says, “Helpful screen
time leaves you informed, inspired, or
connected. Harmful time leaves you
tense, empty, or comparing yourself to
others. The body
usually tells the
truth before your
mind does.”
Hale encourages
people to notice
how they feel
“before, after, and
during screen
time,” and then
ask, “Was this
intentional or
automatic?”
Ryan suggests
giving social
media and email
a clear purpose
and schedule.
“Give social media
a purposeful
job: networking,
learning, or
catching up with
the community. Put it in your calendar,”
she says. For email, “Batch email twice a
day and let your customers or colleagues
know you will check it at those times.”
“Replace ‘constant availability’ with
‘clear availability,’” Hale adds. “People
don’t always need you— they just need to
know when you’re reachable.”
MODELING HEALTHY TECH USE FOR KIDS
If you’re a parent, the experts say it
starts with you. “Kids copy what they
see,” Ward says. “If you’re glued to your
phone all day, they will model that same
behavior.” She suggests narrating your
choices: “I’m putting my phone away so I
can really enjoy this time with you.”
Dr. Neufeld advises setting limits
that apply to everyone. “Set limits for
yourself that match the limits you set for
your children.” Her practical idea? “Buy
a ‘phone basket.’ All phones go in the
basket during those times.”
Hale’s approach is simple. “Model,
model, model,” he says. “Go back to the
time when we didn’t have technology.
What did you do at dinner, what were the
conversations, what games did you play?
Replace screen time with connection
and experiences.”
Whiteman adds that device-free
meals and evening wind downs work
best when adults fully participate. “It’s
less about strict rules and more about
creating a natural rhythm of connection,
activity, and rest,” she says.
At the end of the day, none of these
experts are anti-tech. They’re proboundary.
“Technology is a gift, but so
is peace, presence, laughter, and real
connection,” Ward says. “You don’t have
to give up your devices and go off the grid
forever. You just don’t have to let them run
your entire life. Balance is the goal.”
Or, as Whiteman puts it: “Digital
balance isn’t about perfection. It’s
about remembering that you’re
allowed to rest, unplug, and be fully
present in your own life.”

An
Interplay
of Nature
The Bay Area’s
unique climate
is shaped by the
meeting of the
cold Pacific Ocean,
coastal mountains,
and funneling
winds that create
a patchwork of
microclimates.
Cold ocean air
collides with
warmer land,
generating the
iconic fog, while
the mountains
block and redirect
it—allowing sun to
warm some hills
and valleys and
winds to accelerate
through narrow
gaps.
This dynamic
produces an
inversion of
seasons, making
summer one of
the coolest times
of year here
(hence the oftmisattributed
Mark
Twain quote: “The
coldest winter I
ever spent was a
summer in San
Francisco”).

Dr. Bogard has a long history in the health field. From
an RN to a nurse anesthetist to an anesthesiologist, she
spent almost 40 years in the operating room. She was
exposed to critical care, trauma, obstetrics, lots of on call
hours and sleepless nights. As she entered her 50's she
found her own health starting to decline and sought
out a healthy aging physician. After experiencing the
benefits she sought out the fellowship of regenerative
and healthy aging through the American Academy of
Anti-Aging Medicine.
She opened an office in 2014 and continues to grow
and expand her knowledge into this evolving field of
medicine. Rather than prescribing medications and
bandaging diseases she looks for the "root causes" and
integrates each system in the body together. She also
looks at environmental, genetic and lifestyle factors
which result in "dis-ease". Her continued and expanding
practice utilizes bioidentical hormone replacement,
thyroid and adrenal optimization, GI healing, testing for
heavy metals and IV nutrition and chelation, advanced
lipid testing, and advanced blood sugar testing.

Polished Pups
Because people now see their pets as
part of the family, they’re putting more
care and attention into grooming, skin
and coat health, and overall comfort.
I personally love this—it means dogs
are getting the regular upkeep they
need instead of waiting until something
becomes a problem. It also makes
grooming feel like part of a pup’s overall
well-being, not just a cosmetic task.
I think this shift is popular because
people rely on their pets for connection
and comfort, so taking good care
of them feels meaningful. I’m also
noticing that owners look to groomers
for guidance, not just a haircut, which
builds stronger trust and better longterm
care for their furry friend.

Q: ARE KEYLESS GARAGE DOOR
ENTRY SYSTEMS SAFE?
A: Yes! In fact, they’ve become one of
the most convenient and secure ways
to access your home. Modern keypads
and smart openers use rolling-code
technology, which means the entry
code changes automatically every
time the door is operated, preventing
code grabbing or cloning. Many newer
systems also allow you to manage
access from your smartphone, see
activity logs, and receive alerts if
the door is left open. The key to
maintaining security is simple: choose
a reputable brand, update your access
codes when needed, and keep your
app login info private. When installed
and maintained properly, keyless entry
systems provide both security and
peace of mind.

Open House
’60S RANCH HOME RENOVATION
by KOURTNEY JASON
When interior designer and El
Dorado Hills local Jen Reagan,
principal and founder of Jen
Reagan Interior Design (jenreagan.
com), picked up a 1,565-square-foot
home built in 1965 and located in El
Dorado Hills, she knew she wasn’t
just renovating a property. She was
taking on a slice of regional history.
The home, lovingly maintained by
its original owner, had barely been
touched in six decades. For Reagan,
it was the perfect blank slate for a
KITCHEN (AFTER)
KITCHEN (BEFORE)
full-scale design experiment.
With an overall budget of $140,000
and a tight timeline goal of three
months, she set out to modernize
the mid-century property while
keeping its character intact.
The project demanded a long
list of essential upgrades: updated
electrical, strategic wall removal
and additions, new drywall and
texture, interior and exterior paint,
a complete kitchen and bathroom
overhaul, and all new flooring.
OPENING UP A CLOSED-OFF LAYOUT
Like many homes of its era, the interior
was a maze of compartmentalized rooms
and dark finishes. “People lived more
compartmentalized in the ’60s and there
was quite a bit of dark paneling used
throughout,” Reagan says.
The kitchen and living area were the
biggest opportunities for meaningful
change. “I think the most dramatic change
was the kitchen and main living area,”
she says. Tearing down walls proved to
be a game-changer. “We were able to pull
out all the walls in the main living area to
create open concept living, which, for a
home that small, made a huge difference.”
Reagan also added practical features
that didn’t exist in the original footprint,
including a new entry drop zone and
a small walk-in pantry. Removing
two wood stoves freed up valuable
wall space to expand the kitchen
dramatically. One was replaced with a
sleek electric built-in fireplace, bringing
warmth without the bulk.
A SURPRISINGLY SOLID STRUCTURE
While older homes usually come with
surprises lurking behind the walls, Reagan
lucked out. “The biggest surprise for
me on this particular project was the
condition of the home,” she says. “[The

original, and only, owner] had taken very
good care of it, so there wasn’t a lot of
structural challenges that you [sometimes]
encounter on a home of that age, which
enabled us to do some nicer upgrades.”
Even so, she notes that budget
vigilance is non-negotiable. “The biggest
challenge is always trying to stay on
budget, especially when things come
up that you didn’t budget for in the first
place,” she says.
SMALL HOME, SMART DESIGN
Maximizing limited square footage
became both a puzzle and a priority.
Nowhere was that more apparent than in
the primary suite. “With smaller homes,
ENTRYWAY (BEFORE)
ENTRYWAY (AFTER)
EXTERIOR (AFTER)
EXTERIOR (BEFORE)
PRIMARY BEDROOM (AFTER)
PRIMARY BEDROOM
(BEFORE)
function is everything,” Reagan says. The
original layout left much to be desired:
“The toilet and shower shared a very
small space and outside of that, there was
a single vanity that was completely open
to the bedroom and a shallow closet that
spanned the whole wall.”
With some creative modifications, she
transformed the awkward setup into a
functional, modern retreat. “I was able to
reconfigure it to accommodate a double
vanity, a larger curbless shower, and a
small walk-in closet, while keeping the
bedroom large enough to still house a
king-size bed,” she says.
IT'S ALL IN THE DESIGN DETAILS
Reagan approached finishes with a careful
blend of style and budget-consciousness.
“I really wanted to incorporate small,
[affordable], on-trend details that would add
a big impact to the overall design,” she says.
Her favorite touches? White oak reeded
wall paneling on the entry wall and kitchen
hood, floating shelves with curved edges,
and inexpensive but stylish lighting to pull
the look together.
One design risk she took paid off
beautifully: smoothing out the old
knock-down wall texture. “If you have the
opportunity and it’s in budget, changing
the wall texture makes a massive difference
in the overall look of an interior,” she says.
With extensive drywall repair already
underway, it became a logical upgrade. “It
turned out great and really elevated the
design,” she says.
WEARING BOTH HATS:
DESIGNER & HOMEOWNER
Because this was her own investment
project, Reagan approached it from both
sides of the renovation table. “I really
wanted a project that I could 100% put
my own mark on and create a home
that someone could just move into and
enjoy,” she says.
Her top priority? “Not using cheap
materials and adding creative but costeffective
design details,” she says. The final
product matched her original vision down
to the last detail. “I would say that we stayed
on budget and it completely matched the
vision I had for it,” she says.
Her personal favorite outcome echoes
her professional assessment. “Honestly,
I really love the way the main living
area and kitchen turned out,” she says.
“It brightened up the whole house and
brought a much-needed, fresh design
without straying too much from the style
of the original home.”
LESSONS LEARNED
After completing the project, Reagan
walked away with lessons any homeowner
can use. “You must always be ready to pivot
on your design choices,” she says. “There
are a lot of unknowns when taking on
remodels and they will never be perfect. Be
open to the challenge and know that, with
patience, it will turn out beautiful.”
She also cautions renovators not to
erase history along the way. “If you’re
remodeling an older home, don’t throw
out all the old charm,” she says. “There
are things that come back around and
still are useful now.”
When it comes to Reagan’s best
practical tip, she says: “[If possible], move
into a rental while you’re renovating.”

SAY
Cheese!
by SHARON PENNY
Hello, my name is Sharon. I’m an Aries,
and I enjoy romantic walks through the
cheese department. Are you a fellow
cheese lover? Triple-cream brie, smoked
gouda, crumbly Irish cheddar—I’m
here for all of it. As a fan of cheese and
puns, I’ve always dreamed of opening
a shop called Sweet Baby Cheeses…or
maybe Grate Expectations. And yes, the
commercial would absolutely feature a
version of “Sweet dreams are made of
cheese…” On that note, we’ve rounded
up our favorite cheesemongers, makers,
and must-try cheese dishes from around
the region, so you’re never short on
options when the craving hits. Some
might even say our list goes from gouda
to grate. Everybody say cheese!

Croque
Madame
Croque Monsieur
Julian’s is a fromage lover’s paradise. Can
you say Croque Monsieur? No, that’s
not a French insult directed at well-to-do
gentlemen. It’s a super classic, super French,
super delicious play on a grilled cheese, only
WAY better and cheesier than you can even
imagine. Julian’s version (available at their
Roseville outpost) includes grilled ham and
Swiss with bechamel sauce and Dijon mustard
on sourdough (already amazing, right?),
served smothered with loads of melted Swiss.
Yes, cheese on the outside and the inside.
Over in Folsom, you can get almost the same
sandwich, but with a different name—Croque
Madame—and a sunny side up egg on top.

Fun fact: a few years ago, I tried to make cacio e
pepe at home. In a single evening, I attempted it
not once but four (!) times and failed completely
every…single…time. (It ended with tears, a trash
can, and takeout.) This delicious, deceptively
simple dish is divine when done right—like at
Vacanza Romana. Their Cacio e Pepe is made
with old-fashioned Italian know-how using fresh,
handmade pasta tossed in a delicate sauce of pepe
nero (black pepper), parmigiano reggiano, and
pecorino romano. It’s creamy, but there’s no cream!
How? Science! And Italian magic. (Don’t try to tell
me there’s no sorcery involved. I refuse to believe
otherwise.) 2023 Vine Street, Suite 101, El Dorado Hills,

This Neapolitan eatery serves handcrafted

decadent, savory-sweet, cheese-filled culinary
extravagance, you can’t look past(a) their
Sacchetti: tender handmade pasta “purses”
filled with cheese and pears, then topped with
toasted almonds in a gorgonzola cream
sauce. You can tell Dean Martin to
forget about the moon and pizza pies—

Newcastle Cheese Shop is so
good, I wonder if maybe I shouldn’t

they’re an excellent purveyor of a variety
of delicious deli cheeses (hence the name),
but this somewhat secret spot also slings
some of the best sandwiches around. What
the Corti Special is to East Sacramento,
the Rat Trap is to Placer County—a
tantalizing mix of freshly shaved deli ham,
pastrami, roast beef, and turkey, plus a
combo of cheeses (yes, folks: we’re talking
multiple cheeses), mayo, mustard, onions,
lettuce, tomatoes, and pepperoncini served

Tiramisu
Wrapping up the best cheesy eats are the Italian
dessert stars: mascarpone and ricotta! What meal
is complete without a sweet dessert featuring
one or both of these lovelies? Papa Gianni’s
Ristorante has both Tiramisu and Cannoli
on their dessert menu, but instead of choosing,
do what I do: convince your partner to order
whatever you’re not having, so that you can
end up having both. Mwahaha! I’ll have the
tiramisu, with Papa Gianni’s lady finger cookies
dipped in espresso and layered with heavenly
mascarpone whipped cream. And my husband
(sharp elbow) will have the cannoli, a crunchy,
generously portioned, handmade Italian pastry
filled with creamy whipped ricotta, rum,
and chocolate. A little of this, a little of
that, the dessert gods smile upon us: ah,
bellissima! 3450 Palmer Drive, Cameron

best I’ve had…
The allure of the Gold Rush remains a defining
part of Folsom’s charm; and the stories,
structures, and scattered remnants of the largest mass
migration in U.S. history continue to shape the
downtown district’s character.
Yager Lodge, built inside what was once a boilermaking
plant, taps directly into that legacy. From
the outside, you’d never guess the space inside is so

charismatic, grand, and downright glamorous.
When my wife and I stepped through the
unassuming façade—on a post-Thanksgiving visit—
the interior stopped us in our tracks. The soaring
dimensions, intricately crafted décor, and cozy,
Christmassy ambiance had us instantly craving a hot
chocolate (or perhaps a warming cocktail).
Escorted toward the back—where the restaurant

Old Fashioned
seems to stretch endlessly
beneath historic Sutter
Street—we found ourselves in
a space that channels a cabin-esque,
mountain-lodge energy. Brick and handcut
stone walls, sepia-toned photos, antler
chandeliers, log-style chairs, and wood
paneling sets a scene that feels both rustic
and refined.
To settle in, I ordered a classic Old
Fashioned, which fit the mood perfectly.
The cocktail menu, a blend of timeless
standards, modern staples, and inventive,
forward-thinking creations (smoke
bubbles and playful infusions included),
feels like a time portal of mixology. If
my drink was any indication, everything
crafted here is destined to be buzzworthy.
For dinner, we shared the 14 oz.
NY Steak with a side of Fried Brussels
Sprouts, the Seafood Fettuccini, and the
beloved Green Lantern Salad. The first
bite of the perfectly medium-rare steak
immediately earned a place among the
best I’ve had in the past year. The burnt
onion reduction and demi-glace, draped
over garlic mashed potatoes, parsnip purée,
and romanesco were equally memorable.
The fettuccini—coated in a rich pesto
cream sauce with sautéed mussels
and shrimp, plus bright pops
of cherry tomatoes, basil, and
lemon zest—was decadent and
deeply flavorful. And just when
the richness bordered on too
much, the Green Lantern Salad
(grilled broccoli and asparagus,
feta, cabbage, scallions, snap peas,
salsa macha, and a Greek yogurt–balsamic
dressing) cut through beautifully, letting us
dive back in refreshed.
As we ordered a slice of S’mores
Cheesecake to go, families and couples
began filling the space, each finding a
cozy corner to settle into.
The whole experience checked every
box—an unmistakable
“vibe,” inspired cocktails,
comforting yet
elevated cuisine, and
a resonant sense of
place. A reminder, in
every detail, of what
makes Folsom feel like
Folsom.

Bravo, Pedal Car Pizza & Gelato—bravo! If you’re craving
fresh, mouthwatering pizza, head to Roseville’s Vernon
Street for one of the best pies you’ll ever put in your
belly. With house-made dough and locally sourced ingredients, each pizza is bursting
with quality, flavor, and that irresistible just-out-of-the-oven goodness. Kick things off
with an appetizer, like the beef, pork, and ricotta Meatballs—covered in red sauce and
finished with parmesan and basil—or an order of Roasted Brussel Sprouts, tossed
with shallots and drizzled in balsamic. Perfection! When it comes to pizza, your whole
table will find something to love, thanks to a surplus of sauces (red, white, pesto) and
both vegan and gluten-free options. I tried the Prosciutto & Arugula, and it was ahhmazing:
shredded and fresh mozzarella, olive oil, prosciutto, balsamic reduction,
and peppery arugula layered on a golden crust. Feeling adventurous? Check out the
“World Pizzas,” like the Swedish (red sauce, mozzarella, ham, bananas, and curry) and
South American (creamy chipotle sauce, chorizo, mozzarella, roasted red peppers, and
cilantro); or the Cali Pickle Pizza (house-made pickles, shredded mozzarella,

Traditionalists can always opt for pepperoni, margherita, or cheese (my
kids’ go-to). Whatever you do, though, don’t skip dessert! They offer 12
flavors of gelato and sorbetto, (including Olallieberry Cheesecake
on my visit!), so there’s a sweet scoop (or three) for everyone. The
restaurant’s hope is you “come for the pizza, stay for the gelato, and
leave with a craving to come back.” I like to follow directions…so I’ll
definitely be returning!

THE

LIST
TEA time
by CAITLIN EMMETT
PPerhaps it’s memories of hosting
pretend tea parties as a child or
watching shows like The Great
British Bake Off and Downton Abbey,
but I’ve always been fond of picking
out something cute to wear, grabbing
my mom or a friend, and heading
to afternoon tea. When I started
researching, I wasn’t sure how many
nearby offerings I’d find; lo and
beyond, to my delight, I discovered
there are multiple (and one worth
making a short drive for) that are
steeping with high tea. When the
weather outside is frightful, head
indoors to one of these spots for
comforting nibbles, sometimes
bubbles, and always warm tea.
HIGH SOCIE-TEA
Vampire Penguin serves up afternoon
tea, by reservation only, all seven days of
the week—and their offerings are fit for
royalty (literally, one of the options is the
“Royal Tea,” complete with crumpets, salad,
tea sandwiches, scones, fruit, dessert, and
two different selections of tea). Other
varieties include a “Prince/Princess Tea,”
“King/Queen Tea,” and a “Charcuterie

grazing board bites alike. 420 Palladio

BOWLS
OF RAMEN
Fukumi Ramen’s
Kara-Miso Ramen
In the dog days of winter, nothing restores faith in humanity
quite like a piping hot bowl of ramen. With endless
variations—depending on where you slurp and what you like—
ramen truly has no limits. Tonkotsu (pork broth)? Shoyu (soy
sauce)? Shio (clear chicken broth)? Miso? We’ve rounded
up eight of the region’s best ramen spots to help boost your
winter self-care routine.

Fukumi Ramen in Roseville specializes
in Hakata-style ramen, showcased in
their deep, rich tonkotsu broth—a silky,
umami-packed stock made from simmering
kurobuta pork bones for 72 hours.
TRY THIS: Kara-Miso Ramen, a spicy, soulwarming
bowl of goodness featuring thick
noodles in their signature full-flavored,
milky tonkotsu broth flavored with house
miso blend, spicy paste, chashu pork, a
seasoned egg, green onions, sprouts, corn,
and chili threads.

Heights; 4630 Natomas Boulevard,

Thai Noodle Express in Placerville is
beloved for its Thai specialties, but
they also serve a mighty fine lineup of
both traditional and creative ramen.
TRY THIS: Tom Yum Shrimp
Ramen, a spicy Thai-style tom yum
(hot & sour) soup base loaded with
noodles, extra-large shrimp, a seasoned
egg, mushrooms, sprouts, spinach, fish
cakes, and green onions. (My personal
cold remedy is always a steaming bowl
of tom yum, so trust me: this ramen will
cure what ails you.)

Fukumi Chaya x Momo Katsu in Folsom is
Fukumi Ramen’s spinoff, adding Japanese
fried pork steak (katsu) to the mix alongside
their delicious lineup of ramen.
TRY THIS: Tori Miso Ramen, made with
Fukumi’s lighter chicken broth blended
with their original miso, plus noodles,
pork chashu, a seasoned egg, green onions,
sprouts, and corn. Not too heavy, not too
light—the Goldilocks of ramen.

Rakkan Ramen specializes in 100%
plant-based broth—so it’s healthier but
still just as rich and flavorful—made with
kombu dashi, shiitake mushrooms, ginger,
garlic, carrots, and onions.
TRY THIS: Spicy Garnet Ramen, a creamy,
spicy miso ramen with vegetable broth,
sesame paste, grilled pork, bean sprouts,
cabbage, green onions, a seasoned egg,
fried garlic, black pepper, and Rakkan’s thick
noodles, plus optional toppings like fried
broccolini, Thai chili, corn, and fresh garlic.

Ryujin Ramen House has been a
Sacramento ramen staple for over a
decade, and its new Roseville outpost is
just as beloved, racking up hundreds of
rave reviews. Beyond their 12 varieties
of ramen, they serve appetizers, rice
plates, and cold noodle dishes—all in cozy,
modern digs.
TRY THIS: Kuro Tonkotsu Ramen, rich pork
broth with chashu, steamed cabbage,
kikurage mushrooms, red ginger, green
onions, an ajitama egg, sesame seeds, and
a drizzle of black garlic oil.

Ramen 101 in Rocklin* specializes
in house-made traditional
ramen—tonkotsu, miso, and
shoyu—along with black garlic,
seafood, and more. They also
offer Hawaiian combo plates,
lumpia, crab rangoon, and even
loco moco on weekends.
TRY THIS: Chicken Ramen,
with your choice of “not spicy,”
“mild,” “medium,” or “spicy” broth,
plus grilled chicken, a boiled egg, bamboo
shoots, green onions, sprouts, kikurage
mushrooms, and corn. Customize it with a
dizzying array of extra toppings like fried garlic
and roasted seaweed.

Umami Ramen is the hot ramen kid on
the block. In 2024, they ranked #9 on
Yelp’s “Top 100 California Ramen Spots,”
and earlier this year, they opened a second
location in Lincoln.
TRY THIS: Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen, their special
pork broth and signature spicy sauce with thin
noodles, topped with tender roasted pork
chashu, black mushrooms, a seasoned egg,
bean sprouts, and green onions.

is my kind of place, offering both
food groups: ramen and sushi. Do you
really need anything else? Their ramen list
is creative and varied—tonkotsu, Sapporo

and more.
TRY THIS: Sapporo Ramen, with braised
pork belly, bamboo shoots, wood ear

onions in house miso broth.

Congrats to this month’s
nonprofit of the month:
EMPOWER
FITNESS
VOLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT:
Brandon Jenkins
What inspired you to volunteer for
Empower Fitness?
I wanted the kids at the gym to know
there was someone available if they
needed help with homework.
What do your volunteer duties entail?
I’m currently available to tutor kids in any
subject, though I mostly help with math.
Is there training required?
No.
What’s the time commitment?
I volunteer for two hours every Tuesday.
What’s been the best day of
volunteering so far?
It’s always the best when I take a student
from failing to passing. It makes them
light up!
Empower Fitness (EF) is more
than a gym—it’s a movement
dedicated to empowering young
people physically, mentally, and
spiritually. Located in Diamond
Springs, the organization offers
incredibly affordable monthly
memberships, which allow
access to the basketball court,
all equipment, classes, and
community programming. The
lobby and upstairs “Learning
Center” serve as a safe space for
students to do homework, play
games, or simply hang out.
They also provide academic
tutoring, especially in math,
during weekly sessions. Through
all this, EF emphasizes building
community: every member
contributes to supporting youth
in a meaningful way.
For more information, including
ways you can donate or volunteer,
visit empowerfitness.life.
What’s one of the biggest challenges?
Tutoring is more about teaching good
habits than the actual work itself. It’s
challenging to get students in a new
rhythm that is conducive to learning.

Better health takes more than health care.

why we invest in farm-to-fork initiatives, creating 6,500
