Flying the flags
How to stay out of trouble in the water over summer
BY GEOFF SLOAN
Rips are the number one unseen
danger on Canterbury's beaches.
That is the warning from surf
lifeguad Olivia Courtney, who
is one of more than 4500 volunteer
and paid surf lifeguards
patrolling about 90 beaches
across New Zealand during the
summer.
The 21-year-old said people
should be especially careful at
Sumner and Taylors Mistake
beaches.
“Rips are very dangerous,
especially if people choose to
swim outside the flags.”
Last summer, Courtney was
part of a mass rescue at Sumner
beach after swimmers became
caught in a rip near Cave Rock.
The group had been swimming
between the flags, but became
caught in the rip and kept drifting
further out to sea, unable to
get back in.
“Originally I went out on a
board, and got one person. Then
I saw there was like two, three,
four, five other people, so we
called for the IRB (inflatable rescue
boat)and ended up rescuing
nine people,” Courtney said.
She advised that anyone
caught in a rip should remember
the 3Rs: Relax and float, Raise
your hand to signal for help, and
Ride the rip until it stops and you
can swim back to shore or help
arrives.
Last summer on Canterbury
beaches, lifeguards took action
more than 6600 times to move
swimmers away from rips, shift
flags to safer spots, or step in
Surf lifeguard Olivia Courtney is warning beachgoers to be wary of rips at Canterbury beaches this summer.
before someone got into trouble.
Rescues were required 72 times.
Courtney first got into surf lifesaving
when she was 12.
“My mum wanted me to do
some kind of summer sport, so
she signed me up at North Beach
Surf Lifesaving Club. I just loved
it,” she said.
She is now a member of the
Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving
Club and is on rotating shifts
patrolling all beaches across
Canterbury.
Being a surf lifesaver gives her
purpose, but it’s not all about
patrolling the beach.
“It gives me a reason to be
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
active and to give back to the
community.
“You do the lifeguarding, but
there’s also sports, coaching and
opportunities to upskill yourself,”
she said.
Courtney will be moving to
Wellington in February to study
to become a paramedic.
“Even though I'm studying,
I'm still going to try and
train with a Wellington club
for a national competition in
March,” Courtney said.
She will be patrolling up until
the week she leaves.
Courtney said the best advice
she can give to people is to swim
between the flags.
“Especially at Taylors Mistake.
The rips there are some
of the most dangerous rips in
Canterbury.”
People sometimes don’t realise
the risk because it doesn’t look
that bad, Courtney said.
“We’ve already had multiple
rescues and the summer hasn’t
even really started.”
One incident occurred in mid-
November when a 16-year-old
was pulled from the water by
a surfer and two off-duty lifeguards,
Sarah Cook and Craig
Jarvis.
The swimmer had been with a
group of other teenagers when
he got caught in a rip and began
struggling.
The three rescuers managed
to place him on a paddle board
and transport him to the club’s
first-aid room where oxygen was
administered.
He was later taken to Christchurch
Hospital for observation
and discharged.
Courtney encouraged beachgoers
to ask lifeguards about
conditions if they are unsure
because preventing an incident
from occurring made life easier
for those on duty.
“A perfect day for us would be
if we had no rescues,” she said.

Boxing Day unwrapped
Contrary to popular belief, Boxing Day doesn’t actually
have anything to do with the sport of boxing.
The name is believed to come from Victorian times
when the rich used to box up presents to give to the
poor, on the day after Christmas Day. It was also a
day off for household servants, who would be given a
Christmas box from their employers. They’d also go
home to their own families on Boxing Day and give out
Christmas boxes there too.
There’s also a church connection. During the year,
churches would collect money from churchgoers. It
was stored in a box, opened on Christmas Day and
distributed to those in need on Boxing Day.
Some also believe the name refers to a nautical
tradition. Ships setting sail would have a sealed box
containing money on board as a sign of good luck. If
their voyage was a success, their box would be given
to a priest, opened on Christmas and then given to the
poor the next day.
Turning Christmas day duds into Boxing Day wins
BY GEOFF SLOAN
If your Christmas gift didn’t
quite hit the mark this season,
you are not alone.
The pressure of festive
spending can lead to hurried
purchases, and not every
present ends up being a winner.
Last year, Trade Me reported
almost 5000 unwanted gifts had
been listed on its platform by
mid-morning on Boxing Day.
A survey of about 3600
Trade Me members found 46%
admitted receiving at least
one unwanted gift, with 19%
planning to list unwanted items
for sale.
The most
common
unwanted gifts
listed online
include clothing,
home décor,
cosmetics,
watches and
jewellery.
If you are not Corinne Haines
planning to resell
an unwanted item, don’t throw
it out or leave it gathering dust
– there are plenty of options for
donating, re-gifting or upcycling
so a gift doesn’t end up in
landfill.
Many charities run op shops,
which can be a guilt-free way
to pass your gift on to someone
who will appreciate it.
City Missioner Corinne
Haines said their op shops
and foodbank depend on
community donations.
“Our food and goods go to
people who really need them
City Mission op shop retail manager Melissa Brakel with donated items which will be distributed to families in need.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
and want them so it’s a lovely
idea that something unwanted
goes where it is very much
appreciated.”
Haines said 2025 had been
harder than usual for many
clients due to the rising cost
of living, a lack of suitable
housing and tighter access to
Government support in some
areas.
“We know January will be
tough for some families who
have spent all they had, and
more, to survive Christmas and
New Year,” she said.
For those wanting to make
some extra cash, Trade Me
remains a popular option.
Research shows 46% of Kiwis
wouldn’t be offended if someone
on-sold their gift, while 35% said
they had “mixed feelings”.
Facebook Marketplace is
another option and includes a
handy ‘hide from friends’ filter
– ideal if you don’t want the giftgiver
spotting your listing.
Consumer guides suggest
several practical options if you
aren’t planning to sell your
unwanted items.
One approach
is a random act
of kindness – give
the unwanted
item to someone
in need.
Re-gifting
is another
increasingly
popular option. Abby Damen
Put the gift
aside for a future birthday or
event, making sure it’s suitable
for the next recipient.
It is important to keep track
of who gave what, to avoid
accidentally re-gifting a present
back to its original giver,
which could make for a frosty
reception.
If you have a good relationship
with the gift giver, returning or
exchanging the item may be an
option.
While slightly awkward, it
could be easier than dodging
questions about why you’ve
never been seen wearing the
orange turtleneck sweater they
bought you.
However, Consumer NZ
communications and campaigns
adviser Abby Damen said while
consumers have strong rights
for faulty goods, exchanging
unwanted items is not normally
possible.
“Retailers aren’t legally
required to provide refunds
if you change your mind,” she
said.
Boxing Day has cemented
itself as one of the busiest
shopping days in New Zealand
and Damen said shoppers
should do their research and
plan ahead to avoid impulse
buys they might later regret.
“Savvy shoppers should have
a game plan to avoid falling
for the sales hype and buying a
dud.”
Online tools such as PriceSpy
can help track prices and
compare deals across retailers,
saving time and money.
Consumer NZ’s own product
testing shows price is not always
an indicator of quality.
“Just because something is
discounted doesn’t mean it’s a
good deal,” Damen said.
The countdown to 2026 is on.
Christchurch has a diverse
history of public clocks, some
of them gone to the annals of
time, others still ticking.
First up is the Victoria
Clock Tower, designed by
Benjamin Mountford and
built in 1860. It was relocated
to Victoria St in 1930.
The year before, the
Edmonds Clock Tower on
Madras St was gifted to
the city by philanthropist
Thomas Edmonds as part of
a riverbank beautification
scheme. It still stands.
The landmark art moderne
style Municipal Electricity
Department building was
built in 1939, with its hexagonal
clock (below) replaced
in 1960 (right). The building
was demolished post-earthquakes
in 2012, as was the
Government Life building
in Cathedral Square and its
digital clock and temperature
gauge.
In 1953, the floral clock in
to the city. It takes up to 7000
plants to adorn its everchanging
8.5m-diameter face.
Meet the robot protecting the harbour from pests
Environment Canterbury’s
coastal team can now tackle
new areas of Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour for
surveying and marine pest
control, thanks to a robot from
Kiwi tech company Boxfish
Robotics and Earth Sciences NZ.
Every year, ECan undertakes
biosecurity surveillance at
four ports and harbours across
Canterbury, searching for invasive
marine species that can
damage New Zealand's marine
biodiversity.
One of the biggest threats is
Sabella spallanzanii, the Mediterranean
fanworm.
The inner harbour is a hot
spot for the fanworm, which
can damage boats and smother
native species.
The robot, a Boxfish remote
operated vehicle is joystickcontrolled
and equipped with
vehicle uses AI
cameras and a manipulator
arm.
Working like an underwater
drone, it streams 4K video in
real time for accurate identification,
uses AI to detect pest
species and a mechanical arm
to grip, rotate, and remove
invasive species from underwater
structures – all without
sending divers into hazardous
conditions.
“The ROV gives us a safer,
more efficient method for
marine pest control,” said ECan
coastal response and readiness
lead Emma Parr.
“Using it to access areas
unsafe for divers, allows us
to remove sabella where we
previously couldn’t. This
technology opens up new
possibilities for managing
marine pests in challenging
environments.”
ECan is working to
contain fanworm within the
inner harbour and reduce
populations, with removal
efforts up to four times a year
in collaboration with Lyttelton
Port Company and Biosecurity
New Zealand. High-risk areas
include Te Ana Marina, Cashin
Quay, and Magazine Bay
marina.
A harbour-wide survey in
2023 showed less fanworm
spread outside the inner
harbour. ECan is optimistic
about minimising its
impact on the wider marine
environment.
and all the spices, and cook for
2 mins more until the mixture
resembles a paste.
• Stir in the tomato purée,
passata or chopped tomatoes
and mango chutney, and bring
to a simmer. Cook for a further
10 mins.
• Stir in most of the cream and
the yogurt, if using, and return
the mixture to a simmer.
• Add the turkey and continue
to simmer until the turkey is
piping hot. Remove from the
heat, drizzle over the remaining
cream and stir through briefly.
• Scatter over some coriander
and flaked almonds, and serve
with the rice and naan breads on
the side.
CHRISTMAS LUNCH PATTIES WITH
GOCHUJANG MAYO
Eliminate Christmas food
waste with these easy patties.
Filled with leftover roasties, veg,
stuffing and meats, they make a
great brunch on Boxing Day.
Ingredients
200g leftover roast potatoes, finely
chopped
150g leftover cooked carrots or swede,
finely chopped
150g leftover cooked Brussels sprouts,
finely sliced
100g leftover cooked stuffing, finely
chopped or crumbled
50g leftover cooked cabbage or 2 tbsp
kimchi
1 garlic clove, grated
1 tsp grated ginger
a splash of Tabasco
100g leftover cooked sausages, finely
chopped
100g leftover roast turkey meat, shredded
or finely chopped
50g cheese, grated (any kind)
2 tbsp bread sauce or mayonnaise
1 tbsp chopped herbs
3 tbsp plain flour
3 tbsp semolina flour (or use an extra 2
tbsp plain flour)
1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
2 tbsp rapeseed oil
For the gochujang mayonnaise
6 tbsp mayonnaise
2-3 tbsp gochujang
1⁄2 lime zested, plus 1-2 tbsp juice
Method
• Heat the oven to 200C or 180C
fan-forced.
• To make the gochujang mayo,
whisk together the mayonnaise, 2
tbsp gochujang and the lime zest
and juice. Taste and add another
1 tbsp gochujang if you prefer
more spice. Set aside.
• To make the patties, mash
the potatoes well in a large bowl
using a potato masher or fork.
• Add the carrots or swede,
sprouts and stuffing and mash to
combine.
• Stir in the cabbage or kimchi
and season well.
• Stir in the garlic, ginger,
Tabasco, sausages, turkey, cheese,
bread sauce or mayonnaise and
herbs, mixing everything well
until evenly combined.
• Put the flours in a second
shallow bowl.
• Lightly oil your hands, and
mould handfuls of the patty
mixture into burger-sized patties.
If they start to fall apart, add
a little more bread sauce or
mayonnaise.
• Lightly dust the patties in the
flour mixture, then flatten them
slightly between your palms.
• When all the mixture has
been used (you should have
about six to eight patties), heat
the sesame and rapeseed oils in
a heavy-bottomed frying pan or
skillet over a medium heat.
• Fry the patties undisturbed
for 2-3 mins, until they have a
golden crust (you’ll need to do
this in batches). Carefully flip and
fry for another couple of minutes
on the other side until golden.
• Transfer the fried patties to a
baking tray and bake in the oven
for 5 mins until deeply golden
and crisp on the outside, and
cooked through.
• Serve with the gochujang
mayo.
REFRIED ROASTIES
Use up potatoes left over
from Christmas and make these
refried roasties with pickled
onions and thyme. Ideal for a
Boxing Day buffet.
Ingredients
3 tbsp olive oil
10 small pickled onions, cut in half
½ tsp cayenne
a few thyme sprigs, leaves picked
500g leftover cooked roast potatoes
Method
• Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large
frying pan over a medium heat,
add the pickled onions and fry
for 3-4 mins until they get nicely
caramelised.
• Add the cayenne and thyme
leaves, then tip the roasties into
the pan along with another 1 tbsp
oil.
• Use the back of a wooden
spoon to squash each one slightly.
Leave alone for 3-4 mins to fry
and get extra crisp on one side,
then give them a good toss.
• Add the remaining oil, toss
and fry again for extra crispiness.
Don’t worry if they fall apart
a little, the scuffed bits will get
extra crisp.
• Season to taste and serve
warm with your Christmas
leftovers.
Celebrity cricket clash to launch
pavilion fundraising campaign
BY KEES CHALMERS
A fundraising campaign to rebuild the
Sumner Sports Pavilion will start in
February, headlined by a star studded
rugby vs cricket T20 match.
The cross-code game will be held at St
Leonards Park on February 5, with the
first ball bowled at 3pm.
All Blacks head coach and Sumner
identity Scott Robertson will lead
the celebrity line-up, which includes
Canterbury icon Robbie Deans, Magicians
pace bowler Gabby Sullivan and former
Black Fern Helen Mahon-Stroud.
Former White Fern Lesley Murdoch will
MC the event.
“It's a great way to celebrate our
community as well as have a bit
of fun and raise some cash,” said
campaign lead Amy Carter.
Carter said more athletes would
be announced as the game draws
nearer.
In November 2024, the Waihoro-
Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote
Community Board approved
Sumner Sports Pavilion Inc’s
application to renew its lease at St
Leonards Park and to remove the existing
pavilion to make way for a new one.
Since then, a project team has been
working towards launching the campaign,
progressing the design process and
securing resource consent, which was
granted in August.
The demolition of the current pavilion
and construction of a new one is estimated
to cost about $3 million.
Carter said the group had already
invested about $500,000 into the project
and was pursuing grants, crowdfunding
and events as fundraising opportunities.
Amy Carter
It is hoped the rebuild of the Sumner Sports Pavilion
will start after the 2026 rugby season. PHOTO: CCC
Demolition work would ideally start
right after the 2026 rugby season, she said,
but would depend on fundraising progress.
Carter said upgrading the pavilion, home
to Sumner rugby and cricket clubs, was
long overdue and had been needed
since before the earthquakes.
“It’s just no longer fit for purpose
and it’s far from meeting seismic
strengthening requirements as
well,” she said.
The building was also unable
to accommodate for either club’s
growing female player base.
The new pavilion will include
changing rooms for women, match
officials and people with disabilities,
and a commercial kitchen.
The building’s conceptual design has
been completed, with work now under
way on detailed plans ahead of a building
consent application.
Project contractor Jim the Builder has
agreed to take an open-book approach,
allowing services and materials from the
community to be used to keep costs down.
The new pavilion is intended to be a
multi-use facility, with space for local
sports clubs and community groups that
do not have a permanent home.
“We want the facility to be utilised as
much as possible,” Carter said.
MOTORING
Evolution not
revolution for
Škoda’s Superb
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Rating out of 10: Performance 7, Handling 8, Build Quality 8, Comfort 8, Passenger and Load Space 9,
Value for money 7, Fuel Economy – On road test average, 8.9L/100km, Safety, ANCAP crash rating, Five star
Price: $77,300
Overall points out of 10: 8
One of the more interesting
recent arrivals is the fourthgeneration
Škoda Superb
wagon, which takes an
evolutionary rather than
revolutionary path, building on
the strengths of its acclaimed
predecessor — no small feat
given the high bar it set.
The only area where there’s
less is in the range itself, now
trimmed to just two models.
The entry-level variant tested
here starts at $77,300, with a
$9k step up to the Sport Line.
While significantly more
expensive than its predecessor,
this latest Superb now competes
in a price bracket alongside
several well-priced rivals.
Still, as one of the few
genuine large wagons left in the
market, Škoda believes it can
command a premium.
Slightly larger in every
dimension than its predecessor,
the new Superb faces its rivals
with a smartly evolved design
and a suite of new technologies.
A modern powertrain and
improved aerodynamics make
it more efficient, while the
clean, spacious interior makes
greater use of sustainable
materials.
In fourth-generation trim,
the Superb features features
a distinctive octagonal grille
and sharply drawn LED Matrix
headlights that deliver more
light than before.
This is also the most
aerodynamic Superb ever,
gliding through the air with
minimal wind noise at highway
speeds.
A 195kw 2.0 litre turbo petrol
motor seems potent enough
on paper, although being a
reasonably hefty wagon its size
and weight seemed to be a bit of
an anchor on the test vehicles
performance.
Power comes from a 195kW
2.0-litre turbo petrol engine
– potent on paper, though the
wagon’s size and weight slightly
blunt its performance.
Still, it offers an appealing
mix of smoothness and
refinement, sprinting from
0-100km/h in around 6.5
seconds.
Acceleration feels purposeful
across the rev range, ideal for
tackling New Zealand’s varied
roads. With 350Nm of torque
available between 2000 and
5400rpm, and a seven-speed
DSG automatic that shifts with
precision, the powertrain feels
well-matched.
The Superb has grown by
40mm in length and gained 30
litres of luggage space, making
it a superb load hauler with an
expansive, modern cabin.
A freestanding central
infotainment display
incorporates the vehicle’s
navigation system and other
controls.
For the first time, Škoda has
fitted new nano radar sensors
in the Superb’s front corners to
enhance systems such as front
assist and crossroad assist,
which detect crossing traffic,
cyclists, and pedestrians,
braking automatically if
needed.
A new multifunction camera
provides a wider field of
vision, enabling features like
predictive cyclist protection
and turn-assist braking.
Other systems include exit
warning, which alerts occupants
to approaching traffic before
opening a door, and swerve
support, which helps steer
around obstacles if the driver’s
reaction is too slow.
Adaptive lane assist now
works on unmarked rural
roads, while adaptive cruise
control uses navigation data
to anticipate bends and
intersections.
Attention and drowsiness
assist monitors driver
behaviour, assesses their risk of
fatigue and triggers visual and
acoustic warnings when these
go beyond a pre-determined
threshold.
It uses an innovative
algorithm to recognise shortterm
inattention (distraction)
and long-term inattention
(fatigue).
It detects deviations from
normal steering expectations
at speeds above 65km/h and
continuously evaluates the
driver’s alertness in order to
draw conclusions about their
fitness to drive.
If the driver fails to srespond,
emergency assist tightens
seatbelts, applies brief braking
jolts, activates hazard lights, and
safely slows the car to a stop.
Ride quality is reasonably
compliant even over badly worn
and poorly cambered road
surfaces.
Handling is nimble for such
a large wagon, effectively
managing power delivery across
a range of conditions.
Body roll is well contained
in corners, and the steering is
crisp, responsive, and perfectly
weighted – giving the Superb a
level of poise and composure
that lives up to its name.
