program note
At the heart of every institution of learning lies a quiet but profound drama: the awakening of minds, the passing of torches,
the forging of legacy. Crest & Crown is a musical tribute to that academic journey—an ode to the traditions, revelations, and
quiet moments that shape a scholar’s path.
The work opens with a jubilant fanfare, brimming with pageantry and promise. This introduction evokes the ceremonial
grandeur of convocation: banners unfurled, faculty robed in colors of old, and the air alive with anticipation. This is a musical
salute to the outward symbols of scholarship that also hints at the inner quest just beginning.
From this bright opening, the music gives way to a more introspective and lyrical passage, which is a gentle meditation on
the start of a new academic year. Here, under the canopy of turning leaves and on quiet walks between classes, the real
work of growth begins. It represents a time of settling in, of questions asked and friendships kindled, filled with a mix of
nostalgia and newfound hope. An enigmatic interlude represents the challenges associated with research and thoughtprovoking
learning.
These chapters build to a majestic soaring section (one might listen for the revelation or ”lightbulb”). This is the turning
point—the thrill of discovery, the spark of understanding, the elation of connecting ideas once thought unrelated. It is the
moment a student becomes a thinker. The opening fanfare then returns in a triumphant recapitulation, wherein the
protagonist dons their well-earned regalia (their Crest & Crown).
Crest & Crown is a celebration of scholarship, both in ritual and in soul. It is for every teacher, every student, and every
moment when the mind is opened, and the world is made new.
biography
Joey Stempien (b. 2004) is a Rochester, NY-based composer whose work in jazz
and contemporary concert music has garnered national attention. Known for his
visceral lyricism and evocative orchestrations, Stempien has developed a distinct
voice that continues to resonate with performers and audiences alike. He made his
publishing debut for big band at age 17, and his music has since been brought to life
by the talents of the US Navy Commodores, Eastman Jazz Ensemble, and US Army
Field Band Jazz Ambassadors, among others.
An active composer, Stempien has received commissions from educational
institutions, consortiums, and professional musicians across the country. As a guest
clinician and conductor, he regularly works with ensembles at the middle school,
high school, university, and community levels. He was named the winner of the
Midwest Clinic’s 2025 Barbara Buehlman Prize in Composition for his wind
ensemble work Montréal at Night.
In addition, Stempien maintains a busy performance schedule as a jazz pianist and
multi-instrumentalist, including with GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist Jimmie
Highsmith Jr. He currently leads the Joey Stempien Big Band, a professional
ensemble of top collegiate and conservatory musicians dedicated to performing his
original music.
Stempien is completing a dual degree in Music (B.A.) and Environmental Science (B.S.) at the University of Rochester. His
original works for wind ensemble and big band are available through C. Alan Publications and Murphy Music Press.
