Call for rethink on contracts
after chief’s $57k payout
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Council chief executive contracts
need to be changed to avoid
large payouts if they resign
early.
Sharon Mason leaves her position
next Friday to take up chief
executive for The City of Onkaparinga,
south of Adelaide.
Mason will leave with a
$57,380 payout, equivalent to
three months’ pay, after the
council decided not to require
Mason to work out her notice
period. Her resignation just
before Christmas came as a surprise
– saying when she arrived
in 2023, she would be staying for
at least five years.
“I will certainly be here for
five years,” Mason said at the
time, adding she would also like
to take up a two-year extension
she had on her contract.
But Rolleston Residents
Association chair and former
councillor Mark Alexander said
his personal view is the next
chief executive should not get
a payout if they choose to leave
before their contract term ends.
“There’s a lesson that
the council should learn in
Sharon Mason
appointing the next CE (chief
executive) that clause does get
included,” he said.
“I can understand if you ask
them to leave, you pay them out,
but if they resign and you let
them out, it seems bizarre.
“Selwyn has always been an
attractive council for CEs to
come to. If a new CE wants that
in their contract, then the council
should not want them.”
Mason’s contract was overseen
by former mayor Sam
Broughton, Mayor Lydia Gliddon
said. Councillors approved
Mark Alexander
her appointment but weren’t
privy to details of the contract.
Broughton did not return calls to
Selwyn Times.
Gliddon would not comment
on whether she consider
changes to payouts in relation to
notice periods.
Council executive director
of strategy, engagement and
capability Steve Gibling will be
the acting chief executive from
next Friday. He is expected to
become the interim chief executive
when the council meets on
January 21 where councillors
Steve Gibling
will also discuss a timeline for
the appointment of a new chief
executive.
Gibling is likely to get a pay
increase for his extra duties,
Gliddon said.
The decision to allow Mason
to exit from her contract early
would allow the council to have
“continuity” in a new year and
through the Annual Plan process.
The council has promised a
single-digit rate rise.
“I can understand there is
frustration, but I think what is
important is it is not a payout, it
Lydia Gliddon
is a payment in lieu of notice. We
are required under the employment
contract and employment
law to do so,” said Gliddon.
“We can’t simply choose
not to pay . . . and I don’t think
the council is willing to break
employment law.”
Mason would not discuss the
issue with Selwyn Times.
When Mason left her previous
role as chief executive for the
Buller District, Gibling was
also appointed interim chief
executive for nine months
before moving to Selwyn.
Would you get an employee to work
out their notice period instead of
paying them $57k to finish up early,
and at the same time increase the
salary of a stand-in to do the job?
Those are the questions we
have been putting to councillors
and Mayor Lydia Gliddon in
the aftermath of council chief
executive Sharon Mason’s surprising
resignation just before Christmas
(see page 1).
Most we got hold of ducked and
dived, some citing they couldn’t
talk because it would be discussing
an employment contract. Mmm.
Even a former councillor, around
when Mason was hired and who
had strong views on what has
transpired, wouldn’t go on the
record. So be it.
Others were happy with Mason
going early and taking the payment,
arguing it means her interim
replacement, senior council
manager Steve Gibling, can keep
momentum running until the
position is filled.
Really? Gibling is effectively
Mason’s deputy, has filled in for her
before and would have been more
than capable of taking the reins in
mid-March when her notice period
ended, saving ratepayers 57k.
And presumably, he would have
been part of all of the big council
news
Former cafe for sale
decisions/
planning
between now
and when
Mason departs
anyway. So why
not keep her on
board?
No wonder
people are
agitated –
particularly
when
ratepayers’ six monthly water usage
bill arrived a week before Mason’s
resignation.
Returns reveal wide gap
in candidate spending
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Former mayor Sam Broughton
was the biggest spender in his
failed bid to get reelected.
Electoral returns show
Broughton spent $19,475.35 on
his election campaign.
In second place was Mayor
Lydia Gliddon, who spent
$14,570.56.
The majority of the spending
for both went to newspaper
advertising.
Gliddon also declared a $2000
donation to her campaign from
West Melton residents DK and
LA Redmond, the biggest of any
candidate.
Third-placed mayoral candidate
Brad Mannering was one
of the lowest spenders at $460,
which included a $3.50 bus fare
from Rolleston to Christchurch
which he rode as part of meeting
people on his campaign.
Failed Rolleston candidate Ashwin
Mani spent the most of the
council candidates at $10,806.26.
Mani placed last of the 12 candidates
in the Rolleston Ward.
At the other end of the spectrum,
Rolleston candidate Errol
Maffey declared he had spent
nothing on his campaign and
placed second last.
None of Selwyn’s spending was
close to Christchurch mayoral
candidates Phil Mauger and Sara
Templeton, who spent $68,015
and $67,927, respectively.
Former mayor Sam Broughton spent $19,475.35 on his campaign, Mayor
Lydia Gliddon spent $14,750.56 to win the mayoralty and third-placed mayoral
candidate Brad Mannering spent $460.
Convicted council
manager increases
payments to group
BY DANIEL ALVEY
A community group, which
had about $18,500 stolen from
it by a council manager, may
get its money back sooner than
expected.
Lisa Elaine Larkin was
convicted in November 2020 of
stealing the money from Selwyn
SeniorNet, a group she had been
entrusted with helping in her role
as a community development
advisor.
SeniorNet is a charitable
organisation that provides
education for elderly people
on using computers and
telecommunications.
Larkin was also convicted of
stealing about $7000 from the
council.
She agreed to pay back about
$3500 to the council and was
ordered by the court to repay
$23,859.05. Payments started in
May, 2021.
She pleaded guilty to the
charges and was sentenced to
nine months home detention.
Court records released to
Selwyn Times late last year show
as of November 11, Larkin still
owed $21,143.95 but her weekly
repayments have increased to $82
from November.
At that rate she will repay the
full amount owed by October,
2030.
Selwyn SeniorNet chairman
Terry Pierson was pleased
Larkin’s payments had
restarted and had been
increased.
“It kind of crippled us for a
while, and we are building back
slowly, and it just goes to show
you have to be careful who you
trust,” he said.
Repayment records released
to Selwyn Times by the district
court show Larkin’s payments
have varied since they began in
May 2021.
The payments started at $20,
going as high as $89.50 for
the first half of 2022. In June
2022, payments returned to
$20 before dropping to $15 in
March 2024.
The $15 amount remained
until payments were stopped
on April 15, 2025, due to Larkin
having “additional debts”, the
court collection registry officer
said. At that repayment rate
SeniorNet would not have got
its money back till 2052.
Due to a court administrative
error, Larkin’s repayments did
not resume until November 11
at the increased rate of $82.
Larkin would not comment to
Public consultation for lower speed
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi
Mundt argues for
halt on long-awaited
community centre
BY JONATHAN LEASK
Ellesmere Ward councillor
Elizabeth Mundt has called for
a pause on Leeston’s $16 million
community facility while the
council awaits new earthquake
strengthening rules.
Councillors were updated
on the concept designs for the
multipurpose library
and community centre
building, Whata Rau, at a
meeting in December.
Construction is due to
start at the end of 2026.
Mundt acknowledged
the Leeston community
she represents has waited
a long time for the facility,
but said the council
couldn’t afford to treat
the project in isolation.
“I’m not one to do knee-jerk
building decisions,” she said.
“I believe that we need to be a
council that actually really puts
in the hard graft, and I know
there has been a lot of work
done, but things have changed.”
The Government has proposed
overhauling the
earthquake-prone building
systems, which could impact
decisions on the future of the
old Leeston library and medical
centre building, Mundt said.
The library had significant
Elizabeth
Mundt
water leaks and was classified
as earthquake-prone, forcing
it to close and services to be
relocated to a temporary site.
The medical centre remains
open. But the building requires
a projected $1.9m in remediation
work.
Mundt hinted at a pending
discussion on the future of the
old library building with
“some staff earmarking
that for a medical facility,
but that has not been a
decision of councillors”.
She argued at the meeting
it was rash to push
ahead with separate
projects.
“I would actually like to
pause this decision and
wait until we have the
earthquake-prone building
legislation come back to
council.”
Mayor Lydia Gliddon said it
was a project update briefing
only, with decisions to come
through the Annual Plan budget
process.
Mundt believed the briefing
was to give staff direction on
the project.
“Why would we be spending
on a design at this point
and moving forward, when we
are still waiting for those other
decisions to be made?” she said.
The concept design for Whata Rau, Leeston’s new $16 million community facility.
Cr Aaron McGlichey said he
had concerns about the project
being good value for money,
while Cr Denise Carrick felt
the budget didn’t match the
population.
Council infrastructure and
property executive director Tim
Mason said the project was only
in the concept design stage and
“there is still value engineering
to do through the detailed
design”.
The project has a $16m
budget, of which only $1.1m is
development contributions. The
rest will be loan-funded, with
$1.6m already spent.
There is also an associated
$1.1m project to build toilets
and changing rooms next to the
facility.
Deputy mayor Brendan Shefford
said he had the “most
important” question: “What’s
the name going on the side of
the building?”
It was a pointed reference to
the debate over Rolleston’s Te
Ara Ātea, a multi-use community
facility including a library,
not having the word ‘library’ on
the building.
The council eventually added
the word to signage.
In response to Shefford,
Gliddon said the name of the
building was Whata Rau.
“That has been gifted by
Gliddon said comments
at the briefing showed the
project needed further
discussion ahead of the Annual
Cafe loved by
star poet goes
on the market
The iconic White House Cafe,
once a popular haunt of one
of New Zealand’s most famous
poets, is up for grabs almost
10 years after it last closed its
doors to the public.
The property is on the market
for offers over $695,000.
Owner Hilda De Buyzer told
OneRoof the cafe’s popularity
endured long after its closure,
with tourists still turning up in
search of Devonshire tea.
De Buyzer and her husband
bought the property in 2004
after relocating from Australia.
The White House Cafe, at
1887 Selwyn Lake Rd, Dunsandel,
first opened in 1952 and
operated for about 50 years as
a popular stopping point for
travellers.
De Buyzer told OneRoof it
took her a year to convince her
husband to buy the cafe.
“I had my eye on it, and I said
‘oh please’. I did like the property
– it was a big property.”
She went on to run the cafe
for the next decade, selling
cream teas and sandwiches to a
steady stream of customers.
“It was very popular,” she
said, noting that retirement villages
in Christchurch would
run trips to the cafe for their
residents.
Poet Sam Hunt often popped
in on his way to and from
speaking gigs at schools in
Timaru and Oamaru and struck
up a friendship with De Buyzer.
“We used to either write to
each other or ring each other,”
she said.
Hunt called De Buyzer after
the 2011 earthquake to check if
she was OK. Another time, he
told her to tune in to the radio
because he had dedicated a
poem to her.
“He was a very nice guy,” she
said, adding the cafe had also
The iconic White House Cafe on Selwyn
Lake Rd is looking for new owners. Poet
Sam Hunt was a regular visitor to the
eatery and struck up a friendship with
owner Hilda De Buyzer.
hosted Sir John Kirwan and former
Invercargill mayor Sir Tim
Shadbolt.
“I met a lot of interesting people,
and I did enjoy it.”
De Buyzer closed the cafe for
good in 2016, citing difficulties
finding staff, the toll of working
six days a week, and an injury.
She kept the property, occasionally
visiting with her
husband from their Darfield
home to mow the lawns and
stay in a converted cottage at
the back of the site.
Now, De Buyzer believes the
time is right for a new owner to
put their stamp on the property,
though she told OneRoof it will
be hard to let go.
“The wildlife is amazing – the
birds and the possums. It’s time
for another person to enjoy it.”
Tall Poppy listing agent Leana
Butler said the cafe remained
well known, despite its closure
in 2016.
She said the property had
resource consent for a cafe and
gift shop, giving a new owner
the option to revive the muchloved
destination. It could also
operate as a wedding venue or
restaurant, Butler said.
“There aren’t a lot of
properties where you can run
an enterprise like that and
actually buy it outright,” Butler
said.
“Most restaurants are leasing
their buildings. So, here’s an
incredible opportunity to buy
the whole property, and it is
only the same sort of price as a
house would be.”
starnews.co.nz
Teen motorsport commentator
racing towards a bright future
Proud to be Me is a series about
ordinary and extraordinary people
living in Selwyn. This week
Coen Lammers talks to budding
broadcaster Josh Henderson who
has enjoyed a fascinating year,
from the commentary booth to
the co-driver seat in a rally car and
even a seat in Parliament
It is hard to imagine Josh
Henderson is only 18 when you
hear him speak eloquently and
confidently about his past and
his future.
Henderson made headlines
earlier this year when he
represented Selwyn in Youth
Parliament, paired with Speaker
of the House Gerry Brownlee.
Politics has long interested
the Springfield teenager, but his
true passion is motorsport – not
just behind the wheel, but in the
commentary box.
He has already become a
familiar voice at Ruapuna
Speedway and at Euromarque
Motorsport Park next door.
Motorsport often runs in the
family, but Henderson said he
is the exception, discovering
it through video games, shows
like Top Gear, and televised
races.
Having enjoyed public
speaking at school, at 15 he took
a bold step and approached
Formula Ford racing series boss
Andy Robertson to offer his
commentary skills.
“He took a gamble on me,
and I ended up travelling up
and down the South Island all
summer providing commentary
on the Formula Ford series.
“It was great fun and I
definitely learned a lot that first
season,” said Henderson, who
was soon invited to commentate
at Ruapuna Speedway as well.
“Craig Broomhall was the
promoter there and gave me
a chance. He has been a huge
influence on my career so far
and I owe him a lot.”
Henderson attended Springfield
Primary School before moving on
to St Bede’s College.
Josh Henderson is a regular fixture in the commentary box at Euromarque Motorsport Park. This year, he has stepped outside
the box and started competing as a co-driver for rally driver Hayden Shakespeare.
PHOTO DANIEL ALVEY
This year, he enrolled at the
New Zealand Broadcasting
School in Christchurch to
pursue a career in radio and
further develop the skills
he needs for high-profile
motorsport commentary.
“I know my voice is my talent,
so the radio course seemed like
a good pathway to advance my
commentary.
“At this stage I am more
focused on the play-by-play
commentary, but it would be
great if that would lead to
opportunities on radio as well,”
said Henderson, who isn’t
just talking about motorsport
anymore, but experiencing it
firsthand.
“At the moment it’s a work
in progress and I have started
co-driving in a couple of rallies
this season,” he said.
Henderson counts himself
lucky rally driver Hayden
Shakespeare took a chance on
racing with an untested rookie
co-driver.
“The more experience you
get, the more opportunities will
arrive, but it’s important to get
that initial experience first, so I
am very grateful for that.
“We now have to see what the
opportunities will be for next
season.”
Away from the race track –
but still in front of an audience
– Henderson showcased
another side of his talent in
Youth Parliament, delivering
a keynote speech on New
Zealand’s brain drain.
Paired with Brownlee, he had
hoped to sit in the Speaker’s
iconic chair, but instead found
himself placed on what he
describes as a “dining room
chair” beside it.
“That was a bit disappointing
and I was a bit sketchy on how I
was going to deliver my speech
from a dining room chair.
“Luckily, one of the other Youth
MPs was unable to attend the
second day, so I was able to sit
in (New Zealand First MP) Mark
Patterson’s seat for my speech,
which was pretty amazing.”
Henderson’s interest in
politics began at 13 through a
politics simulation video game
and has grown since.
Too young to attend Youth
Parliament in 2022, he
reapplied in 2025 and was
selected.
Despite the thrill of the
Beehive, he is not in a hurry to
pursue politics professionally.
“Maybe when I’m 40. I think
I’m a bit young at the moment.
“If you look at current trends,
you see voters don’t tend to vote
for young candidates, so you
really need to find something
different before you go into
politics,” said Henderson,
who is already building that
“something different” in
motorsport.
Henderson had hoped to deliver his keynote speech to Parliament from the Speaker
of the House’s chair, but was instead relegated to the spot belonging to New Zealand
First MP Mark Patterson.
Schools to
celebrate
milestone
The legacy of three historic
Lyttelton schools will be
honoured by former pupils,
teachers and families during
Waitangi weekend at the
Lyttelton Three Schools Reunion.
For more than 150 years, Lyttelton
Main, Lyttelton West and St
Joseph’s School nurtured generations
of children who went on to
help shape Lyttelton.
Although the three schools
were demolished after the February
22, 2011 earthquake, the
memories, traditions and connections
remain strong.
The reunion will be held at
Armadillos Lyttelton from February
6-8 and promises to be a
memorable occasion, bringing
together past pupils to share stories,
reconnect with old friends
and celebrate history.
Said reunion organiser
Lynnette Baird: “This reunion
isn’t just about reminiscing, it’s
about recognising the importance
of education as a cornerstone
of our community and also
acknowledging how these schools
Super City decision not up to Shefford
While happy to allow for
Selwyn District Council’s
largely inexperienced and
new to council roles to take
some time to come up to speed,
could someone let deputy
mayor Brendan Shefford know
it is ratepayers who should
make the decision based on
consultation as to whether or
not Selwyn ever amalgamates
with Christchurch and/or
Waimakariri.
If Mr Shefford did some
background research or
perhaps even just drove into
Christchurch one fine day he
would see Christchurch is full
of brand new facilities, many
of which Selwyn residents
will visit without contributing
anything to their build or
rebuild – see the same Selwyn
Times issue (Dec 17) and the
report on the Selwyn Special
Olympics teams competing and
celebrating in Christchurch City
Council facilities.
Earthquake damage to power
lines, drainage works and water
reticulation has been repaired,
upgraded or replaced in many
cases. I would argue most of
Christchurch’s roads are in
better repair than those in
Selwyn.
Most people in Christchurch
would have a fibre connection
– we can’t even get cell phone
reception, and as a Selwyn
ratepayer I’m tired of funding
Selwyn residents benefit from Christchurch’s new facilities such as Parakiore
without contributing to their build, a reader says on the subject of Selwyn,
Christchurch and Waimakariri potentially forming a Super City.
Rolleston at the expense of
just about every other part of
Selwyn.
After consultation,
Christchurch City Council kept
Three Waters in-house. Another
plus in terms of consultation
and model.
- Lou Gourlie, Ladbrooks
Water company
Selwyn Water Company’s
claim that increasing the
frequency of water meter
readings will reduce “bill
shock” deserves scepticism.
More meter readings do
not reduce the cost of water.
They add to it. Whether done
manually or through systems,
additional reads mean more
labour, administration, billing,
and customer service. Those
costs are inevitably passed on
to households already facing
rising water charges.
Crucially, Selwyn Water
Company has not explained
how more frequent readings
lower anyone’s bill. Reading
a meter more often does not
fix leaks, renew pipes, reduce
capital expenditure, or lower
interest costs. At best, it spreads
payments more evenly through
the year. That may smooth cash
flow, but it does not reduce the
total cost.
The real “bill shock” comes
not from how often bills
arrive, but from how high
they are. Using the language of
consumer protection to justify
higher operational activity
(without transparent costbenefit
analysis) only deepens
concerns about credibility and
accountability.
Ratepayers deserve straight
answers about what is driving
water costs, not marketing
language that obscures
them.
Home comforts,
higher goals for
footballer seeking
new challenge
SPORT Selwyn Times, January 7, 2026 | 11
Name: Lewis Partridge
Age: 21 (today)
Position: Right-back
Nickname: Fridge
Favourite player: Australian wingback
Jordy Bos
Best teammate: Former Phoenix
midfielder Bozhidar Kraev
Favourite memory: Scoring a
banger against Wellington Olympic
in the National League
Pre-match meal: Eggs on toast,
sometimes a bit of avocado
Superstitions: None
After five years in Wellington with the Phoenix, Lincoln footballer
Lewis Partridge is back home and starting a new chapter with
South Island United. Sam Coughlan caught up the right-back
Firstly, Lewis, how has it been with
the South Island United so far?
“It’s been good, obviously the
first day it was all brand new and
everyone’s a little bit nervous, but
you start seeing familiar faces
and then it’s pretty much just like
normal.”

Was there anyone you knew before
you came here?
“I played with Charlie (Beale)
and Jacko (Jackson Manuel)
and Oskar (van Hattum) at the
Phoenix, and played against most
of them in the National League.
But it was cool to meet the new
boys as well – there’s a couple of
guys from Aussie.”

You’re from Lincoln originally, how
did you end up playing in Wellington?
“It’s crazy, coming from a little
town like Lincoln. I went to St
Thomas, played school football
there and was at Christchurch
United in their academy.
“We went up to a tournament
in Wellington and I got scouted by
the Phoenix, moved up there to
boarding school which was pretty
tough, leaving behind my family.”

Who else have you played for?
“I started at Halswell United,
First Kicks, that was just fiveyear-olds
having fun. Then I
moved to Selwyn United in the
STC academy, and I was there
until 11th grade when I came to
Christchurch United.”
Now that you’re back home, are you
staying with your family?
“Yeah I am, it’s so cool. I'll be
driving home and I can’t wait to
see my family and my dogs. I’ve
lived away from them for like
five years – I didn’t see them very
much.”

What was it like being up at the
Phoenix, it must be a pretty serious
environment?
“It was pretty full-on, training
every day, in the gym. I studied
as well and had work so it was a
pretty full-time gig. But I learned
so much with the coaches, the
players are all at a high level, you
have to be on it every day. Same
with us here as well, to be fair.”

Did you get close to an A-League
call-up?
“I was close to a few Australia
Cup games, and trained with the
first team quite a lot which was
a cool experience. My first time
(training), I was so nervous, and
then you get there and they’re
just like normal people at the end
of the day.”

Was it a hard decision to leave that
all behind?
“Not really. I’ve moved back
home for professional football, so
it was a pretty easy move for me.
I had some conversations with
(the Phoenix) and they thought it
was a pretty good move.”

You played against English
Championship side Wrexham in preseason
this year, what was that like?
“That was an unreal
experience, I can’t really put
Oceania Football Confederation
Professional League
• The OFC Professional League is
a new competition for teams from
across Oceania.
• South Island United will compete
against teams from Auckland,
Australia, Papua New Guinea,
Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tahiti and
Vanuatu.
• SIU are the first-ever professional
team based in the South Island and
will play their first game against
Auckland FC on January 17.
it into words. Walking into the
stadium and there’s 20,000
people, you don’t know where to
look. You get on the pitch and it’s
like, ‘wow, this is a big step up’.
They’ve got six-foot-four pacey
wingers and they’re so strong in
the air.”

What are you hoping to get out of the
OFC league?
“I want to make a name for
myself. There's going to be so
many people watching in New
Zealand and overseas, so if I
can make a name for myself,
hopefully I can progress in later
years. But small steps, I guess.
Focus on trainings first, then the
games.”
Playing in the Pacific islands is a
tough experience, what are you
expecting?
I went to Vanuatu in June 2024
with NZ under 19, during their
winter, and it was like 30 degrees
– one sprint and you’re done.
In Papua New Guinea it will be
like 35 degrees, high humidity,
so it will be tough. But we’re
doing heaps of running and
conditioning for that. I think we’ll
be fine.”

Your teammates call you ‘Fridge’,
where does that come from?
Charlie Beale – I went to
boarding school with him at
Scots College. I don’t know, there
was a fridge there and he used
to write my name on it. Then the
boys said I looked like a fridge
because my shoulders and legs
are like the same width. It was a
Wellington thing. Josh Rogerson
(teammate) is also called Fridge
because his shoulders are wide.
Playoff place on the line for Country on Blenheim trip
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Canterbury Country know if
they beat Marlborough this
weekend and other results go
their way, they will confirm
their spot in the Hawke Cup
zone 3 playoff.
If Country are successful in
their two-day game at Horton
Park, starting at 10.30am on
Saturday, and Nelson defeat
Buller this weekend, the two
teams will be on two wins each,
qualifying them for the playoff
with a round to spare.
In that case, the regularseason
two-day match
between Country and Nelson
at Mainpower Oval in two
weeks would be changed to the
three-day playoff for the toptwo
teams, with the winner to
meet the Hawke Cup holders
to challenge for the trophy in
March.
If either team fail to win
this weekend, the third round
of matches will take place as
scheduled with the playoff in
the weeks following.
Coach Rob Frew said the first
outcome could hinder his side,
as they would get less match
practice under their belt.
“Potentially, it takes
a weekend away from
actually playing some decent
cricket, which is a wee bit
disappointing, but that’s just the
way it is,” he said.
Frew expected to lose star
batter Harry Chamberlain for
the Blenheim match, after he
was called into the Canterbury
Kings’ squad for their Super
Smash game against Central
Districts on Saturday.
Canterbury play tomorrow
and Saturday.
Chamberlain’s likely absence
will be balanced by the return
of batters Archie Redfearn,
Mackenzie Smith and Brayden
Hill from injury.
“They’ll all be back for this
game,” Frew said, “or available
anyway for selection.”
In the club competition,
leaders Weedons take on
Cheviot on Saturday with
third-place Darfield visiting
Peninsula-Harbour.
Canterbury Country batter Harry
Chamberlain is likely to miss
their Hawke Cup match against
Marlborough on Saturday after
being called into the Canterbury
squad.

FEATURE
RURAL LIFE
Tis the season of the bird scarer
ISABELLE TERESA
Rural Selwyn in summer has a
soundtrack, and it’s not welcomed by all.
Those sudden, loud and irregularlytimed
sounds, varying in intensity from
thud to gunshot, come from audible bird
scarers, typically a carousel gas gun.
This sound rings out very effectively
across the wide, flat Canterbury Plains,
and beyond the field the scarer occupies.
While it blends into the background
for many hardened rural folk, for
others it is a constant stress. And for
holiday-makers or newly-arrived
“townies” seeking a rural idyll, it is a
rude and disillusioning shock.
Horses, dogs and cats can also be
visibly distressed by the sounds,
depending on the personality of the
animal. Afterall, the sound is designed
to be loud, random and disruptive – it
wouldn’t do the job otherwise.
The interests of those who need them
and those who hate them are both
protected in the Partially Operative
Selwyn District Plan, operative since
2023. Under “General District Wide
Matters”, NOISE-R11 is the “Audible Bird
Scaring Device” rule.
Audible scarers can be used from
half an hour before sunrise until half
an hour after sunset. There must be no
more than 12 “noises” per hour, under
two seconds long, and under 65 dB LAE
at the boundary of nearby residences (or
education, health and visitor facilities).
If you are between two farmers’ fields
and hearing both, check with Selwyn
District Council. 65 decibels is described
as roughly equivalent to a hairdryer
or to a loud, laughing conversation –
although those sounds are calmer than
the sudden “impulsive” shock-sound.
Laser scarers are a frequent
alternative, sometimes used in
their own right and sometimes as a
supplementary device. They are solar
powered, and blessedly silent. The small
laser unit pans a green or red laser
beam above the field, which humans can
barely perceive in daylight, but birds
see as an approaching object, and find
threatening. This technology is also used
near airfields, to help prevent birdstrike.
Of course, birds can do much farming
damage through crop loss, nest-related
machinery fires and avian flu. They
can also be helpful, especially in pest
control of undesired insects, ticks and
flies. Providing a varied landscape is
important – when scared away, the birds
need somewhere to go. And sometimes
rural residents feel the same way.
Keeping
things
balanced
Expert advice on what to do for
your garden this week
VEGETABLES
Although winter is a long
way off, most winter greens
should be planted by the
middle of January, although
Brussels sprouts generally give
better crops if planted before
Christmas.
Cabbages, broccoli, kale,
cauliflowers and silverbeet all
need rich ground to give good
crops and ground where early
potatoes have been grown is
generally suitable.
A generous dressing of lime
will help prevent club root.
Avoid growing any members
of the cabbage and turnip families
in the same spot two years
in a row to lower the risk of getting
this soil-borne fungus.
Water seedlings well until
they are established and hoe
around them to prevent the soil
caking.
Grey aphis can be controlled
by spraying with a solution of
soap and water.
The bigger members of the
Cucurbita family - marrows,
pumpkins and cucumbers -
should all be forming fruits.
Limit the number by nipping
the ends of growing shoots to
reflect the plant's capacity and,
especially with pumpkins, keep
in mind the size the mature
fruit will reach when deciding
how many to let grow.
Baby varieties, such as
Jack-Be-Little or Peek A Boo,
will produce six or seven little
pumpkins per plant, while
Atlantic Giant, which can produce
200kg monsters, should be
restricted to one pumpkin.
Gladioli corms should be grown in groups of three to five in well-drained soil. Plant them
about 8cm deep, putting corms on a layer of river sand if drainage is less than perfect.
Keep watered once buds appear or they will not mature.
PHOTOS: GETTY
FLOWERS
Roses appreciate a mulch of
compost around them at this time
of year.
This feeding will improve early
autumn displays and a dressing
of potash will help keep black
spot at bay.
Keep roses watered and be diligent
with deadheading, cutting
each faded bloom off just above
the bud of the next leaf.
Prune ramblers as soon as
flowering is over, removing old,
weak growth.
Gladioli are summer-flowering
plants, equally attractive in the
vase or garden bed, whether in
a mixed colour group or single
variety.
The Gladiolus genus, which
originates from southern Africa
and Europe, has more than 150
species.
Gladiolus nanus (the word
nanus means small) is a dwarf
group which includes the charming
Nymph, a delicate pink with
deep pink markings on the lower
petals, and pure white The Bride.
Among taller named cultivars,
Ebony Beauty is as close to black
as one gets; Plum Tart is clear
purple; blues include Twilight
Dream and Blue Heaven; Fireball
and Stromboli are among the best
reds; White Contessa is a pure
white, large-flowered variety,
while Priscilla is a popular warm
pink with a creamy throat.
These tall forms all need to be
staked or tied to a fence.
Gladioli corms should be grown
in groups of three to five in welldrained
soil. Plant them about
8cm deep, putting corms on a
layer of river sand if drainage is
less than perfect.
Keep watered once buds
appear or they will not mature.
After flowering, cut off the
flowering stem but leave the foliage
to grow into autumn so the
corm is fed for next season.
In autumn, when the foliage
is yellowing, lift the gladioli and
store in paper bags in a cool, dry
spot.
When they are completely dry,
remove soil and dead foliage.
Each corm will produce several
offsets. Save these, plant in a
corner of the garden next spring
and in two years they will have
reached flowering size.
FRUIT
Raspberries send up suckers at
this time of year.
They often pop up some distance
from the main plant and
should be cut as far back as possible,
taking care not to damage the
parent plant.
Check young apple, pear and
plum trees put in last winter and
cut any overly strong shoots to
keep the trees growth balanced.
Mature trees can have a light
pruning to maintain their shape.
Apply pruning paste to every
cut to keep disease at bay.
Double and triple-grafted fruit
trees should be checked for even
growth on each variety.
If one looks weaker, remove all
fruit so that leg puts all its energy
into growing a strong stem, not
into fruit production.
At this time of year, check young apple,
pear and plum trees put in last winter
and cut any overly strong shoots to keep
the trees growth balanced.
PUBLIC NOTICES
EV3 bringing fresh energy
to the compact SUV game
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Driving into our market a few
months ago as the holder of the
Red Dot ‘Best of the Best’ World
Car of the Year title, Kia’s smallest
and newest electric vehicle, the
EV3, arrives with big expectations.
Its credentials are compelling –
a smartly styled, technologically
advanced compact SUV designed
to stand out in a crowded EV segment.
It’s entering a space where
Chinese brands are pushing hard,
tempting buyers with competitive
pricing and long warranties.
The EV3 makes a strong case,
with a claimed 600km all-electric
range for the long-range version
of the entry-level Light tested
here.
I couldn’t quite match that
figure, averaging 470km – still a
credible result that compares well
against its rivals.
Range will, of course, vary
depending on driving style, load,
and terrain. Hills, in particular,
can chew through battery charge
at an alarming rate.
The EV3 stands out in our EV
landscape with its daring, boxy
profile that echoes its larger
siblings, the bold EV9 and EV5.
Despite its upright stance, it slips
through the air with impressive
aerodynamic efficiency – a drag
coefficient of just 0.26 – which
helps extend its driving range.
Replacing the fully electric
version of the popular Kia Niro
(now hybrid only), the EV3
continues Kia’s commitment to
tailoring models for this part of
the world.
Engineers covered more than
20,000km of local testing to
fine-tune suspension hardware
and shock absorber settings for
Australasian roads.
The four-model range opens
with the aggressively priced
$55,520 Light standard range. The
Light long range sells for $62,220,
followed by the $69,220 mid-spec
Earth, and the range-topping
$75,220 GT-Line.
Having a model comfortably
under $60k is an attentiongrabber,
but the Light long range I
tested feels like the sweet spot for
value and performance.
It ticks most of the boxes
that matter to discerning EV
buyers, including the longest
claimed driving range at 603km.
Ownership benefits include
Kia’s seven-year/150,000km
vehicle warranty and an eightyear/160,000km
battery warranty.
Rating out of 10: Performance 8, Handling 7, Build Quality 8, Comfort 7,
Space 8, Styling 7, Value for money 7
Safety: Five star ANCAP rating
Price: $62,220
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
All models except the entrylevel
Light standard range (with
a smaller 58kWh battery) use
an 81kWh battery paired with a
single motor producing 153kW
and 283Nm.
This delivers strong, responsive
performance – the throttle is
snappy and sharp, and the singlespeed
automatic provides smooth,
effortless progress in both urban
and open-road driving.
Each model offers vehicle-toload
outlets as standard, enabling
electric devices to draw on the
power supplied by the car’s
battery, for power anywhere.
Charging is brisk too – from
10-80% in just 30 minutes using a
350kW DC fast charger.
Luggage space is generous
at 460 litres, expanding to 1251
litres with the rear seats folded.
There’s also a 25-litre frunk – ideal
for storing the charging cable or
smaller items.
The EV3 benefits from Kia’s
downsized E-GMP platform, which
it shares with the EV9, providing
outstanding interior space for its
compact size, with head, leg and
shoulder room comparable to
vehicles in the next class up.
A 29.6-inch panoramic display
is intuitive and easy to master.
The technology suite impresses,
including seamless smartphone
integration through the Kia
Connect app, which offers nine
remote functions such as climate
control, lock/unlock, charging
status, and real-time vehicle
tracking.
Safety mirrors that of the
flagship EV9, featuring Kia’s
full suite of advanced driver
assistance systems: Forward
collision avoidance, lane keep and
follow assist, and smart cruise
control with stop-and-go.
The suspension setup strikes
an excellent balance between
ride comfort and handling, tuned
specifically for local roads.
The result is a refined,
composed ride that soaks up
bumps and patchy surfaces with
ease. Responsive, well-weighted
steering adds to the confidence –
and even injects a welcome touch
of sportiness.
Overall, the EV3 feels like a
more complete package than
the larger EV5 I drove earlier
this year. It benefits from being
built on a dedicated EV platform,
delivering refinement, space, and
dynamic ability in a compact,
sharply priced package that’s hard
to ignore.

Style it, stage it, sell it
If you’re selling your house, then
an open home is a great way to reach
potential buyers and bring some
attention to your sale, but don’t forget
you only get one chance to make a first
impression.
Research suggests it takes a buyer
as little as 30 seconds to decide if they
can picture themselves living in your
home, or if they’ve already mentally
moved on.
Fortunately, there are plenty of
simple tips to help ensure that your
home’s first impression is a good one.
Curb appeal
Before a potential buyer even enters
your home, outside will help set the
tone. So before you have an open
home, mow the lawns, tidy the garden,
water-blast the paths, and make sure
your front door and porch are clean,
invest in a new doormat and some
colourful potted plants to make it look
even more welcoming.
It’s also a good idea to keep your car
off the driveway, as it will make the
space look bigger and more open.
Declutter and deep clean
It goes without saying that you
should clean before holding an open
home, and we’re not just talking a
quick once over with a duster – clean
every surface, polish your mirrors and
taps, and don’t forget about the oftenoverlooked
places like skirting boards
and light switches.
It’s also a good idea to declutter,
because you want buyers to notice the
space, not what’s in it.
All the small things
Buyers aren’t just purchasing bricks
and mortar, they’re buying a lifestyle.
So help them make a connection to
your home by adding in some finishing
touches: light a scented candle, put
some fresh flowers in the kitchen, and
place a cosy throw over your sofa.
These subtle touches can help people
feel more at home.
Open all your curtains or blinds to
flood your rooms with natural light
and turn lights on in rooms that don’t
get as much light.
You can also create a last impression
by introducing a single standout
element, such as a place of freshly
baked biscuits, or a styled coffee
machine that’s ready for use.
Leave a takeaway
Make sure you leave some flyers or
brochures with details or your home,
and how to buy it, near the doors so
that people can pick one up before they
go.
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Walk this way
When renovating and designing your
home, it’s easy to get swept away in
colour schemes, lighting options, and
statement furniture pieces, but don’t
forget to take a look down and pay some
attention to what is underfoot.
Flooring helps set the foundation
for your home’s style, comfort and
functionality; but with so many options
to choose from you’ll need to carefully
consider what look you’re aiming for,
the cost and what will suit your lifestyle
best.
Most homeowners will opt for a mix
of flooring types – such as cosy carpets
for the bedroom, hardwearing tiles for
bathrooms, and easy to clean wooden
flooring for hallways.
An easy way to make your home feel
more cohesive and well-thought out is
to keep the same flooring throughout
the main ‘high traffic’ areas such as
hallways, bathrooms and kitchens.
For rooms that see a lot of footfall,
hard flooring is a great option – and
there are plenty of types to choose from.
Synthetic laminated flooring is
hardwearing, cost-effective and fade
resistant. Upgrades to technology mean
that laminates can now look almost
identical to real wood, or even marble,
floors but without the expensive price
tag.
Engineered wood flooring, which
comprises one layer of thin hardwood
on the surface and a solid layer of
plywood on the bottom, is another costeffective,
durable option and looks like
the real deal when its laid. However,
because it has that real timber top layer,
it can be prone to scratching. Some
engineered wood flooring can be sanded
and refinished, but as the layer is thin
this might only be possible once or
twice. As such, you should check
with the manufacturer before
attempting this and if in doubt,
give it a miss.
If wood isn’t your thing, then
tiles are available in huge range
of finishes, colours, textures and
materials meaning you’re bound
to find something to suit your
tastes and budget.
Brighten up your bathroom
with some colourful Portugueseinspired
tiles or keep things chic
and simple with large format
tiles in a marble-effect. They’re
also water resistant making them
ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and
laundries.
While carpets are ideal for
rooms that benefit from a cosy
touch, such as bedrooms and
lounges, a decent high-quality
carpet is suitable throughout your
home and offers warmth, comfort
and great sound absorption.
