Director & Primary Principal,
ELA Basel School
History of
ELA
Founded in 1993, ELA Basel began as a small
English-speaking childcare centre known as Tiny Tots. Over
the past 30 years, it has grown into a leading international
school, now known as ELA Basel – The Swiss British
School, offering Early Years, Primary and Secondary
education. The school operates across two central Basel
locations: Gartenstrasse 93 and St. Alban-Vorstadt 32, both
carefully renovated to provide modern, child-centred
learning environments.
The Gartenstrasse site, known historically as Ulmenhof
(“Elms Court”), dates back to 1893. Commissioned by
Professor Jacob Wackernagel, it was designed by Basel
architects Edward Vischer-Sarasin and Edward Füter-Gelzer,
who also created the SBB railway building. Once
surrounded by elm trees and part of Basel’s former
Botanical Gardens, Ulmenhof later served as corporate
offices before becoming a protected property in 2003. ELA
Basel moved into the building in 2008, restoring it to a place
of learning and laughter.
Today, Gartenstrasse accommodates over 100 children
across Early Years, supported by a purpose-built playground
added in 2019. In 2022, ELA Basel expanded into the
nearby Wildensteinerhof on St. Alban-Vorstadt, a grand
historical building dating to 1775, marking a new chapter in
the school’s distinguished history.
Mission Statement
The mission of ELA Basel - the
Swiss British School is to empower
all children to embrace learning in a
nurturing, family environment.

others, developing in children all the
skills they need to thrive and
succeed in a diverse and
interconnected world.
Vision Statement
ELA Basel is a vibrant and nurturing
school located in the heart of Basel.
We pride ourselves on creating a
family environment to support our
students’ development and growth.
Our learning programs have
foundations in both the British and
Swiss education systems, with a
focus on Science, Arts, Technology
and Music.

Student Life and Community Engagement
Student life at ELA Basel is
vibrant, inclusive, and strongly
connected to the wider school
community. Our students are
encouraged to take an active
role in shaping their learning
environment, with the School
Council providing a meaningful
platform for pupil voice.
Through the Council, students
share ideas, discuss initiatives,
and contribute to decisions that
influence daily life at school.
This sense of responsibility helps
them develop leadership,
empathy, and collaboration,
essential skills that extend far
beyond the classroom.
A further pillar of student
engagement is our House System,
comprising the Houses
Compassio, Unitatis, Fidus, and
Fortitudo. The system is designed
to promote teamwork, sustained
effort, and community spirit across
the school. Students in Year 5 and
ELA Basel Primary Prospectus |05
Year 7 play an especially
important role in helping to run the
House Point system, giving them
genuine ownership and valuable
leadership experience. Their
involvement strengthens the
sense of unity and shared purpose
that defines our school culture.
From its foundation, ELA Basel
has been built on strong parent
engagement and a genuine sense
of community. Families are active
partners in school life, supporting
events, projects, and celebrations
that bring everyone together. This
close collaboration between
teachers, parents, and students
creates a warm, supportive
atmosphere where every child
feels valued and encouraged to
thrive.
It is this spirit of togetherness that
makes ELA Basel such a special
place for our families — a place
where learning, connection, and
care come together to create an
exceptional school experience.

music room and keyboard areas have
been designed to inspire musical
creativity and skill development
among all students. Additionally,

STEM
Studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is crucial for
fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. STEM promotes innovation
and creativity by encouraging curiosity and the development of new ideas and
technologies. Our curriculum, from building minibeast hotels in Year 2 to tackling
climate change challenges in Year 7, is crafted to ignite curiosity and foster
innovation.
Within our Science lab, students get hands-on experience, conducting
experiments and exploring the science that shapes our world. This experiential
learning is extended through trips to museums and factories, enhancing their
understanding. This method not only makes learning relevant and engaging but
also equips our students with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills
needed for future success.

LANGUAGES PROGRAMME
We offer a Bilingual German-English Programme with
a strong emphasis on French, catering to both
native-speaking families and non-native learners. In
addition, we provide comprehensive French and
German programmes tailored to students’ varying
levels of proficiency, from Beginners to Advanced
students. Recognising the importance of immersive
learning, German is integrated across the curriculum
rather than confined to language lessons alone.
Students benefit from a dynamic approach that
includes enrichment activities in different languages,
as well as subjects such as PE and swimming being
taught in German. This immersive experience
ensures that students do not simply learn a new
language but actively live it, strengthening both their
communication skills and cultural understanding of
the country they live in.
German Language Pathways
At ELA Basel, our German language pathways are
designed to support every child according to their
proficiency, ensuring steady progress and strong
linguistic foundations. By splitting the groups in
Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced we
guarantee that each child can learn on their
individual language level and progress in their own
space.
Beginner Programme from Year 3 onwards
From Year 3 onwards, beginners are taught
separately to allow targeted instruction at an
appropriate pace. After a maximum of two
academic years, Beginner learners transition into
the Intermediate Programme as their confidence
and competence develop.
Intermediate Programme for Reception
to Year 1
The Intermediates Programme caters to students
who arrive with little or no foundation in German
as an additional language. From Year 2, children
are taught separately from Advanced speakers,
guaranteeing a tailored curriculum that meets their
language needs and allows them to progress at
their own pace. By the end of Year 7, Intermediate
students typically achieve level B1.2.
Advanced Programme
Children whose mother tongue is German, or who
are already highly proficient, follow a dedicated
programme from Reception to Year 7 based on the
cantonal curriculum Lehrplan 21 beider Basel.
In Reception and Year 1, advanced learners are
taught separately twice a week. These groups are
known as the Rabbits (Hasen) in Reception and
the Bears (Bären) in Year 1. From Year 2 onwards,
advanced learners receive four German lessons
per week, allowing them to deepen their skills with
a focus on German as a language for native or
almost fluent speakers.
Learning Objectives and Progression
The curriculum for our Intermediate and Beginner
pathways follows the Progression Framework of
the CEFR for Young Learners and Adolescents,
providing clear, internationally recognised learning
benchmarks. By the end of the Beginner
Programme, pupils reach Level A1.2, while
Intermediate learners typically achieve Level B1.2
by the end of Year 7. This structured approach
ensures that all pupils, regardless of their starting
point, receive the guidance and challenge they
need to thrive in German. The Advanced classes
follow the local Lehrplan 21 beider Basel
curriculum. Based on ongoing observation and
performance, children may move to the next
higher group at any point during the year, ensuring
they are always appropriately challenged and
supported.

The Importance of STEM
Science
Technology
Engineering
& Maths
At ELA Basel, we believe in the
power of curiosity. Science has
shaped the world in countless
ways, and we are passionate
about inspiring children to ask
questions and explore the world
around them. We see children as
natural scientists, eager to
understand how and why things
work. Our goal is to provide a fun,
engaging, and hands-on STEM
curriculum that nurtures inquisitive
thinking and equips students with
the skills to investigate,
experiment, and continue learning
throughout their lives.
STEM develops critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity—skills that benefit children both
in and out of the classroom. Science is all around us, from medicine to technology and art, and
understanding it prepares students for future challenges and exciting career opportunities.
How we teach it
At ELA Basel, we emphasise
working scientifically,
encouraging children to
approach learning with
curiosity and purpose.
Students ask questions, design
investigations, collect and
analyse data, and reflect on
their findings. Our hands-on
approach lets children explore,
experiment, and discover,
fostering independence,
creativity, and a love of
learning. By taking ownership
of their journey, students
develop problem-solving skills,
take risks, and build resilience,
gaining confidence to
understand the world.
How we promote it
STEM is celebrated
throughout the year at ELA
Basel, with highlights such as
our Science Fair and STEM
Week, where the whole
school engages in design,
building, problem-solving,
and hands-on investigations.
Students explore technology,
take part in STEM Club, and
make full use of the science
room resources. Older
children also benefit from
special experiences, including
a guest professor guiding
them through organ
dissections to bring
classroom learning to life.
STEM across year groups
In Reception, Science begins
with observing the world
around them, sparking
curiosity and a love of
discovery. As children
progress through the school,
their science learning
becomes increasingly
detailed and investigation-led.
Older students develop skills
in planning experiments,
collecting and interpreting
data, and representing their
findings, preparing them for
more complex scientific
thinking in Year 7 and beyond.

SPORTS
& MORE
At ELA Basel, sport and physical activity
play a central role in our students’
education and wellbeing. Our Physical
Education curriculum encourages
teamwork, perseverance and personal
achievement, helping children develop a
positive attitude towards a healthy, active
lifestyle. Alongside traditional sports,
students also enjoy activities such as
orienteering, which combine physical
fitness with problem-solving and outdoor
exploration. We further supplement our PE
lessons with Enrichment clubs, as well as
interschool competitions and events that
inspire participation, sportsmanship and
confidence in every student.
Athletics & Sports Days
We make full use of Basel’s outstanding local
amenities, including nearby sports fields and
recreational spaces. These provide the perfect
setting for team sports, athletics, and games,

awareness to locate checkpoints. The activity
promotes resilience, independence and a spirit of
adventure while encouraging students to enjoy the
outdoors and apply their learning in a real-world
setting.
Enrichment
Each semester, our Enrichment Programme offers a
variety of fitness-focused clubs designed to keep
students active and healthy. Options include Running
Club, HIIT Club, and more, giving everyone the
chance to find a fun way to stay fit.
Swimming
Swimming is an important part of our Physical
Education programme. By accessing local
swimming pools, students gain essential water
safety knowledge and confidence in the water while
enjoying a diverse and engaging curriculum that
promotes lifelong fitness and enjoyment of sport.
Inter-School Competitions
Students at our school have the exciting
opportunity to take part in inter-school
competitions, representing ELA Basel against
other schools across Basel-Stadt and Basel-Land.
These competitions cover a range of sports,
including soccer, athletics, and more, giving
students the chance to challenge themselves,
develop teamwork, and experience the thrill of
friendly rivalry. It’s a fantastic way for students to
build confidence, stay active, and connect with
peers from other schools in the region.

AFTER
ENRICH
Our After School and Enrichment
Programmes are open to both ELA
Basel families and external families!
These programmes take place
outside regular school hours and
offer a wide range of opportunities
for children to learn new skills,
explore interests, and have fun. Each
programme has a distinct purpose,
from creative and academic to active
and social, ensuring there’s
something to suit every child.
With over 30 enrichment activities to
choose from, there’s always
something exciting happening after
school at ELA Basel!
After School Programme
At ELA Basel, After School provision is in two
parts. The first session (15:30-16:30) is
designed to keep students engaged and
supervised once the regular school day ends,
typically until parents or guardians finish
work. After School programmes may include
elements of social interaction and free play.
The second session (16:30-18:00) has a more
structured element where children get to
choose from one of three activities to keep
them engaged, foster teamwork or their love
of reading. These activities usually include a
sports element, a reading element and a
structured play session.
Enrichment Programme
Enrichment Programme activities start at
15:30 and usually finish at 16:30. However,
some clubs run longer depending on the
activity that is offered. The reasons for
offering Enrichment activities are as follows:
Structured activities are designed to
broaden students' knowledge and skills
beyond the standard curriculum.
Enrichment activities can include things like
art, music, coding, language lessons, and
science clubs.
Enrichment helps students explore their
interests, discover new talents, and deepen
their understanding of specific subjects in
fun and engaging ways.
Although Enrichment Programme activities
change every semester, all children can
expect some sports, crafts, STEM and
music-related activities as part of the offer.

ELA Basel Transition Agreements
Pathways
to Secondary
At ELA Basel, our priority is to provide
an exceptional and continuous
educational journey for your
child—one that encourages families to
stay with us through the Primary and
into the Secondary years. At the same
time, we recognise the value of
keeping future pathways open. To
support families who may eventually
wish to transition into the local Swiss
school system, we have established
agreements with Basel-Stadt and
Basel-Land, and we continue to build
new partnerships. These pathways
ensure clarity, confidence, and a
smooth transition should your child
move into the local system in the
future.
Our three transition agreement options are currently in place for students completing Year 7 and transitioning
into Sekundarstufe I in the BS and BL local systems. In addition, we are actively pursuing an agreement for
students completing Year 10 to support transitions into Sekundarstufe II. All pathways are designed to
ensure smooth, transparent transitions that align with each learner’s individual needs and progress.
Basel-Stadt Transition
Agreement for Advanced
Students
For pupils in the Advanced
Programme, we have a formal
Transition Agreement with the
Education Department of
Basel-Stadt. This agreement
enables eligible pupils to
transfer seamlessly into the
local secondary school
system based on their
academic performance,
without the need for
additional testing. It provides
a clear, structured route for
families wishing to continue
into the Basel-Stadt state
system.
Basel-Stadt Sur Dossier
Agreement for Beginner
and Intermediate Students
Since January 2024, Beginner
and Intermediate pupils may
transition to the Basel-Stadt
secondary school system
through the Sur Dossier
process. Under this
agreement, pupils can
transfer without further
examinations, provided they
meet the academic
expectations and receive a
positive school
recommendation. This
ensures that pupils across all
language pathways have
access to a fair and
supportive transition option.
Basel-Land Transition
Regulations
Basel-Land currently requires
an Entry Exam for pupils
moving from private to local
schools. New regulations now
govern this process, and
families should expect formal
assessment as part of the
transition. ELA Basel is
actively exploring the
possibility of establishing a
Transition Agreement with
Basel-Land to provide
families with smoother, more
predictable options for the
future.
