THIS WEEK IN CAPE MAY JAN 9-MAR 25 2026
This is the quiet season in Cape May, but there are lots of things happening in America's first seaside resort! Here at the Physick Estate, we're getting the chance to give the 1879 House Museum a much-needed sprucing up by refinishing all the wood floors, a big job that takes a couple of weeks. That will be done in time to welcome visitors for Presidents' Weekend, when cabin fever will be setting in and a trip to Cape May will be just what the Dr. (Physick) ordered!

CARROLL GALLERY EXHIBIT
Cape May was home to one of the East Coast’s most significant Black
communities. From the late 1800s through the mid-20th century, Black
residents built thriving businesses, worked in tourism, and welcomed
visitors, even during the Great Depression and World War II. The town
also hosted influential figures like Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson,
W.E.B. Du Bois, and Martin Luther King, Jr., leaving a legacy of culture,
activism, and resilience.
This exhibit explores that rich history and includes a new, original
painting by local artist Chanelle Rene’, René, bringing the stories of of
Cape May’s Black community vividly to life.

We did the Historic District Trolley Tour for the first time since we were little (probably
around 20 years ago). We were one other couple due to the cold weather
(not many people there in the offseason), but our guide was fantastic and informative.
We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, our driver, and our guide. Everyone
was super friendly!”

Emlen Physick Estate
Liz and I enjoyed a wonderful tour yesterday at the Emlen Physical Estate
in Cape May, New Jersey. Our tour guide Rebecca was absolutely
great! She was warm, knowledgeable, and friendly. The architect
Frank Furness created a beautiful home for this family and community.
His touches are also all through the house in most of the furnishings
pictured. The two stained glass pieces in the doors were created
by Henry Holiday. If you are in the area, this tour is a must.!”

Physick Estate: A House with History
We visited over MLK weekend and tacked the visit to the house onto our history
trolley tour and we are so glad that we did. The history contained within the walls
of this home is fascinating. The docent provided a wealth of interesting information
and so much of the house remains original. Everyone should take the time to visit
and appreciate this piece of history and beautiful home.”

Cape May Lighthouse
The Cape May Lighthouse stands out as a remarkable historic site. Although
we couldn’t climb it because of mobility issues, the area around the lighthouse
impressed us. The grounds are well cared for and feature informative
plaques, picnic spots, and nearby nature trails. At its base, you’ll find a museum
and gift shop with exhibits about Cape May’s maritime past. Combining
history, beautiful scenery, and educational experiences, the site has something
to offer visitors of every age.”

Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Ave.
and virtually via Zoom
Programs begin at 12Noon
Wednesday, Feb. 4:
The Story of Black History Month
Black History Month has become a vital part of the American calendar — but its story
is far richer and more complex than many realize. Ted Bryan explores the origins of
the observance, the key figures who brought it to life, and the reasons it remains
important today. A concise and insightful introduction to the “who, what, when,
and why” behind this annual celebration.
Wednesday, Feb. 18
Black Classical Composers
There have been Black composers of classical music as far back as the mid-eighteenth
century, but many have been forgotten. The classical music world is beginning
to address the systemic racism and cultural biases in its history. Dr. Brenda
Leonard celebrates the artistry of eight composers of color whose work is coming
back into the mainstream.
Wednesday, Mar. 4
Unsung Heroes of the American Revolution
— Let’s Hear It for the Ladies
It’s remarkable how many women were involved in the Revolutionary War and
how little is known about their service. Join Mary Stewart as she uncovers the
courage and contributions of these forgotten patriots
Wednesday, Mar. 18
Margaret’s Diary During a Revolution
Written and performed by Gayle Stahlhuth based on the diary Margaret Morris
kept when tensions between Hessians and Patriots were escalating near Trenton in
December 1776. As many of her neighbors fled Burlington, she decided to stay, not
knowing her fate.

Revolutionary Cape May
While Cape May, N.J. was remote and distant from the American
Revolutionary War on land, it occupied a strategic location at the tip
of the Cape. It was home to skilled pilots who knew the shoals of
the ocean and bay, was already well involved in the shipping trade,
offered safe anchorage for ships on their way to and from
Philadelphia, and could serve as a lookout on the activities of the
British Navy — Philadelphia’s early warning system.
Discover Cape May’s little-known naval role in the American War of
Independence and the ingenuity of its citizens in the battle on local
waterways, fighting to forge a new nation.

Everyone likes to keep a clean
recycling container in their kitchen
BUT REMEMBER:
If you use a plastic bag for recyclables, when placing the
recyclables in your curbside container for collection,
EMPTY the bag into the Container and
put the plastic bag in the TRASH.
Bagged Recyclables are a serious problem for
curbside recycling collections.
