High flyers, hard landings and
water woes make for busy break
The Christmas and New Year
break is a time for fun, but
for some it was far from it.
Emergency services in the Bay
Harbour News area were kept
busy with paragliders, mountain
bikers and a fisherman falling
into the sea. Kees Chalmers
and Dylan Smits report
PARAGLIDERS PLUMMET
Two paragliders escaped
injury after crashing into the
sea near Taylors Mistake.
The pair were seen soaring
around the Scarborough cliffs
before losing lift and plunging
into the water at Moki Point,
north of Taylors Mistake beach,
at 9pm on December 27.
Canterbury Hang Gliding
and Paragliding Club president
James Morris explained how
conditions can quickly change.
“You maintain altitude by
the wind basically blowing up
the terrain, so you've got uplift
there when you’re flying along.
“If the wind drops for whatever
reason, then you start
going down,” he said.
A member of the public who
saw them crash called 111,
with police alerting Coastguard
Sumner and Taylors Mistake
Surf Life Saving Club.
Coastguard launched its
HamiltonJet Rescue vessel at
9.10pm and reached the crash
site within five minutes.
Taylors Mistake life guards
at a social event at the club
also swung into action, preparing
inflatable rescue boats
(IRBs) for the Sumner-Taylors
Mistake Surf SAR squad who
arrived soon after.
There were concerns the
paragliders
could become
entangled in
submerged
lines and
canopies, said
Coastguard
Sumner spokesperson
Howard
Nicholls (right).
Light was also fading. Both
paragliders were able to
detach themselves from their
harnesses and swim to rocks
shortly before help arrived.
Said Nicholls: “It’s not an
easy thing to do. So they both
did well to detach and then get
away.”
Coastguard and the SAR
squad ensured the paragliders
did not need medical assistance.
They were able to get onto a
track near the rocks and walk
back to the beach.
The incident was attended
by Hato Hone St John, Sumner
Volunteer Fire Brigade and
police.
FISHERMAN FALLS
Rescue organisations and a
passing doctor responded to
a seriously injured fisherman
after he fell about 3m down a
cliff at Taylors Mistake.
The man, in his early 40s was
fishing off Moki Point shortly
after noon on Sunday when he
tripped while grabbing bait.
A nearby member of the
public saw the fall and called
111.
Alerts went out to Coastguard
Sumner and Taylors Mistake
Surf Lifesaving Club.
“There was plenty of adrenaline
which I think just helps
everyone focus on reaching him
as soon as possible,” said patrol
leader Joe Hall.
Although the fisherman could
speak to rescuers, he had lost
all feeling below his chest and a
spinal injury was suspected.
Nicholls said the presence of
a GP, who had been walking at
Moki Point when the man fell,
was invaluable.
“They were instrumental in
assessing the injury. Our volunteers
have medical knowledge,
but having that expertise was
really helpful.”
Grassroots effort pays off as
Akaroa’s courts bounce back
BY KEES CHALMERS
A seven-year, community-led
project to restore the Akaroa
Recreation Ground courts is
finally nearing completion.
Banks Peninsula Sport and
Recreation secretary Jan
Whitehead said it was incredible
to be standing on the first
refurbished court last month.
“It is so cool
to see people
walking with
tennis rackets
and basketballs.
You go down
there and all
three courts are
fully booked,
fully utilised at
times. We’ve Jan Whitehead
got community
groups using the building – it’s
just so positive,” she said.
Whitehead said there was
pressure to have the court
available to the public before
Christmas, and the city council
and its contractors delivered.
One court was fully fitted with
new astroturf in December, while
the remaining two are scheduled
to have plexipave (a durable,
acrylic sports surface) laid next
month.
The clubrooms, regularly
used by the Akaroa mahjong
and bridge clubs, are also being
re-carpeted and repainted.
The upgraded court, fitted with new
blue astroturf, while the other two will
be equipped with plexipave.
The project started in 2018,
driven by a group of local
residents determined to
make better use of the area’s
recreational facilities.
Established in about 1930, the
Akaroa Recreation Ground had
suffered decades of neglect. Large
cracks, uneven surfaces and
outdated netting meant all three
courts needed to be stripped back
and rebuilt.
Whitehead said the goal was
to restore it as a significant
community hub, making the
courts more multipurpose and
giving Akaroa children more
local sporting options and
reducing the need to travel into
Christchurch.
Pickleball, basketball, futsal,
hockey, croquet and tennis can
now all be played on the courts.
“It took a lot of pushing and
shoving to get it there. It’s been
a big journey, but so worthwhile
when you see the smiles on the
faces of people using it now.”
About $160,000 has been raised
through business donations,
grants and fundraising events.
The group is now seeking a
further $10,000 to $20,000 for
ongoing operational costs and
sports equipment for visitors
and Akaroa Area School pupils.
“We really want to encourage
everybody to use the facilities,”
Whitehead said.
Pauling to stand for Greens
Former Environment Canterbury
chair Craig Pauling will contest
the Banks Peninsula seat for the
Green Party in this year’s general
election. He will take on incumbent
National MP Vanessa Weenink and
Labour’s Tracey McLellan, with both
confirming they will contest the seat
again. Pauling was elected to Ecan
in 2019 and became chair in 2024
before deciding not to run again in
October’s local body election.
Covenant a safeguard
for Port Saddle site
Lyttelton Port Company and the
Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust
have established a conservation
covenant over the company’s 17ha
Port Saddle site above the eastern
edge of Lyttelton township, marking
a big step towards the long-term
protection and enhancement
of biodiversity in the Port Hills.
Restoration of the site has been
ongoing since 2017, with the
trust, local schools, volunteers,
community groups and corporate
partners all involved in the work.
Beach fire prompts safety
reminder from brigade chief
The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade
was called to a small fire on Sumner
Beach near Cave Rock at 7.27am
on Saturday. Fire chief Daryl Sayer
said the fire had not been fully
extinguished from the night before,
and it served as a reminder the
area is in a restricted fire season,
meaning a permit is required for any
outdoor fire.
Rescuers applied first aid but
decided not to move the man
onto a vessel to avoid worsening
the injury.
Instead, he was carefully
placed on a stretcher provided by
surf lifesavers.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter
arrived about an hour after the
fall was reported. The fisherman
was winched aboard and transported
to hospital.
SWIMMERS IN TROUBLE
Two swimmers were reported
to be in difficulty near New
Brighton Pier. Coastguard
Sumner was called out by police
at 2.18pm on Christmas Day.
South Brighton and New
Brighton surf clubs were also
alerted, along with the rescue
helicopter. Minutes later, the
swimmers made it ashore and
were checked and found to be
unharmed.
MISSING CHILD
A few hours before the paragliding
rescue at Taylors Mistake
on December 27, Coastguard
Sumner, Coastguard Canterbury
and the Sumner–Taylors Mistake
SAR squad were alerted to a missing
child in Governors Bay.
Crews prepared for an immediate
water search, but were stood
down shortly before launch after
the child was found safe on land.
PERSON REPORTED IN ESTUARY
On December 29 at 9.29am,
Coastguard Sumner was alerted
Canterbury Coastguard towing a stricken yacht back to Te Ana Marina on New Year’s Eve.
by police to reports of a person
in the estuary mouth.
Within three minutes, the
crew was ready to launch
before being stood down after
the person made it safely to
shore.
UNATTENDED JET SKI
The following day, Coastguard
Sumner was called out to a jet
ski floating unattended near the
Southshore side of the estuary.
HamiltonJet Rescue launched
with three crew and the drone
team was deployed. The jet ski
had broken free from its mooring
and drifted ashore.
It was towed back to the
Christchurch Yacht Club.
STRUGGLING WINDSURFER
Later that day, in their final
call-out of the year, Coastguard
Sumner assisted a windsurfer
having difficulties in the
estuary.
The HamiltonJet Rescue
was launched with two
crew members who safely
transported the windsurfer
back to the Mt Pleasant Yacht
Club.
BOATS TOWED TO SAFETY
Coastguard Canterbury had
two call-outs over the Christmas
and New Year break.
The first was on December
28, when it was called out at
10pm to assist a 42-foot sailing
catamaran experiencing engine
problems off Motunau Beach.
After a lengthy tow, the crew
and skipper returned safely at
5.30am.
On New Year’s Eve at 11.30am,
Coastguard Canterbury assisted
another yacht with mechanical
issues off the Lyttelton Heads.
Coastguard North Canterbury
began the tow toward Te Ana
Marina before Coastguad
Canterbury took over.
“People go to the beach,
go boating, jet skiing, and
unfortunately things can go
wrong, so that’s what we’re
here for,” Nicholls said.
“Everybody lives locally,
we’re all volunteers and
we do this to help keep our
community safe.”
MOUNTAIN BIKER FALLS
A mountain biker fell off
onto a track off Summit Rd
near Godley Head on Boxing
Day. The Sumner Volunteer
Fire Brigade was called out at
11.22am.
First aid was provided and
the rider was moved to the
road using a combination of
its basket stretcher and mule
stretcher carrier while awaiting
for Hato Hone St John.
Fire chief Daryl Sayer said
the rider sustained moderate
injuries and was transported to
Christchurch Hospital.
CAR CRASHES INTO SCAFFOLDING
A car veered off Scarborough
Rd and crashed into scaffolding
surrounding a garage, causing
significant damage.
The Sumner brigade was
called out at 9.33am on
December 28. The driver had
left the scene by the time the
firefighters arrived.
Crew provided scene safety
and shored-up the scaffolding to
make it safe until the car could
be extracted at a later time.
SUMMIT RD CRASH
A car with four people in it
rolled on the top of Summit Rd
last Tuesday. The Governors
Bay Volunteer Fire Brigade was
called out at 4.50pm.
Fire chief Doug Burt said the
car’s occupants sustained minor
injuries.
Schools to
celebrate
milestone
The legacy of three historic
Lyttelton schools will be
honoured by former students,
teachers and families during
Waitangi weekend at the
Lyttelton Three Schools Reunion.
For more than 150 years, Lyttelton
Main, Lyttelton West and St
Joseph’s School nurtured generations
of children who went on to
help shape Lyttelton.
Although the three schools
were demolished after the February
22, 2011 earthquake, the
memories, traditions and connections
remain strong.
The reunion will be held at
Armadillos Lyttelton from February
6-8 and promises to be a
memorable occasion, bringing
together past pupils to share stories,
reconnect with old friends
and celebrate history.
The event will feature photo
displays, a ceremony honouring
the educators and students who
once filled the schools, and a mixand-mingle
pub night.
Said reunion organiser
Lynnette Baird: “This reunion
isn’t just about reminiscing, it’s
about recognising the importance
of education as a cornerstone
of our community and also
acknowledging how these schools
fostered lifelong connections that
have transcended generations.”
Metro cricket back in action
after festive season break
BY SAM COUGHLAN
League leaders Heathcote will
look to maintain top spot in the
Metro one-day competition when
it resumes on Saturday, while Old
Boys and Sydenham will be keen
to make up for lost time.
Heathcote’s 56-run win over
Riccarton in round one before
Christmas has them level with
East Shirley on 11 points, but
leading on net run rate.
They visit Elmwood Park to
face Old Boys, who were unable
to start their first game against
Sydenham due to a wet pitch.
Sydenham travel to Lancaster
Park having already claimed
silverware this season, beating
Burnside in the T20 final on
December 21, thanks to Matt
Sydenham captain Mitch Gardner
surpassed Dave Gallop as the club’s
leading premier wicket-taker.
Tromp’s 74 off 38 balls.
Captain Mitch Gardner also
made history in that match, surpassing
Dave Gallop to become
Sydenham’s leading premier
grade wicket-taker with 536.
Gallop, now 88, scored more
than 6000 premier runs for
Sydenham in addition to 535
wickets bowling leg-spin. He
played 24 times for Canterbury
from 1956-1966, scoring a century
and taking 27 first-class
wickets.
The other one-day matches see
East Shirley host St Albans while
Riccarton visit Burnside.
Riccarton, currently in last
place on the overall ladder, will
be desperate for competition
points, with the bottom-placed
team at the end of the season
relegated if the winners of the
second-tier championship do not
already have a premier team.
As it stands, current championship
leaders Halswell are in line
for promotion to the top tier.
Saturday’s matches start at
10.30am.
PREMIER ONE-DAY POINTS
Heathcote 11, East Shirley
Peninsula look to build on winning streak despite absences
BY KEES CHALMERS
A finals spot is firmly in the
sights of Peninsula Harbour
premier player-coach Tim
Gruijters as his side enters 2026
sitting inside the top four of the
Canterbury Country one-day
competition.
After a shaky start to the
season – winning just one
of their first four matches –
Peninsula finished the first
half of the season strongly with
three consecutive victories.
Gruijters’ side is looking to
carry that momentum into the
new year.
“We ended the season pretty
well last year. I think if we can
bring that back again, it’s going
to be good,” he said.
He attributed the slow start
to fresh faces in the squad, but
believes they have now started
to click.
“I think we’re
all getting
used to each
other now and
I think we’re
only going to
get better,” he
said.
Their first Tim Gruijters
test of 2026
comes against third-placed
Darfield at Rhodes Park Domain
on Saturday.
Both teams will field depleted
line-ups, with several players
on representative duty with
Canterbury Country.
Peninsula will be without fast
bowler Will Williams and toporder
batter Tim Petrie.
“I think they are going be
tough to beat. But at the same
time, because they're missing
their better players as well I
think it could be a very even
contest.
“But if we want to stay in the
top four, we need to beat other
teams in the top four,” Gruijters
said.
He was pleased with the way
his team has contributed with
the bat, but said their fielding
has let them down this season.
“I think we dropped at least
two or three catches every
game last year, so minimising
the drops will be one of our
aims.”
the Red Dot ‘Best of the Best’
World Car of the Year title, Kia’s
smallest and newest electric
vehicle, the EV3, arrives with big
expectations.
Its credentials are compelling –
a smartly styled, technologically
advanced compact SUV designed
to stand out in a crowded EV
segment. It’s entering a space
where Chinese brands are pushing
hard, tempting buyers with
competitive pricing and long
warranties.
The EV3 makes a strong case,
with a claimed 600km all-electric
range for the long-range version
of the entry-level Light tested
here.
I couldn’t quite match that
figure, averaging 470km – still
a credible result that compares
well against its rivals.
Range will, of course, vary
depending on driving style, load,
and terrain. Hills, in particular,
can chew through battery charge
at an alarming rate.
The EV3 stands out in our EV
helps extend its driving range.
Replacing the fully electric
version of the popular Kia Niro
(now hybrid only), the EV3
continues Kia’s commitment to
tailoring models for this part of
the world.
Engineers covered more than
20,000km of local testing to
fine-tune suspension hardware
and shock absorber settings for
Australasian roads.
The four-model range opens
with the aggressively priced
$55,520 Light standard range.
The Light long range sells for
$62,220, followed by the $69,220
mid-spec Earth, and the rangetopping
$75,220 GT-Line.
Having a model comfortably
under $60k is an attentiongrabber,
but the Light long range
I tested feels like the sweet spot
for value and performance.
It ticks most of the boxes
that matter to discerning EV
buyers, including the longest
claimed driving range at 603km.
Ownership benefits include
Kia’s seven-year/150,000km
vehicle warranty and an
eight-year/160,000km battery
warranty.
All models except the entrylevel
Light standard range (with
a smaller 58kWh battery) use
an 81kWh battery paired with a
single motor producing 153kW
and 283Nm.
This delivers strong,
responsive performance – the
throttle is snappy and sharp,
and the single-speed automatic
provides smooth, effortless
progress in both urban and openroad
driving.
Each model offers vehicleto-load
outlets as standard,
enabling electric devices to
draw on the power supplied
by the car’s battery, for power
anywhere.
Charging is brisk too – from
10-80% in just 30 minutes using a
350kW DC fast charger.
Luggage space is generous at
460 litres, expanding to 1251
litres with the rear seats folded.
There’s also a 25-litre frunk –
ideal for storing the charging
cable or smaller items.
The EV3 benefits from Kia’s
downsized E-GMP platform,
which it shares with the EV9,
providing outstanding interior
space for its compact size, with
head, leg and shoulder room
comparable to vehicles in the
next class up.
A 29.6-inch panoramic display
is intuitive and easy to master.
Classifieds
The technology suite impresses,
including seamless smartphone
integration through the Kia
Connect app, which offers nine
remote functions such as climate
control, lock/unlock, charging
status, and real-time vehicle
tracking.
Safety mirrors that of the
flagship EV9, featuring Kia’s
full suite of advanced driver
assistance systems: Forward
collision avoidance, lane keep
and follow assist, and smart
cruise control with stop-and-go.
The suspension setup strikes
an excellent balance between
ride comfort and handling, tuned
specifically for local roads.
The result is a refined,
composed ride that soaks up
bumps and patchy surfaces with
ease. Responsive, well-weighted
steering adds to the confidence
– and even injects a welcome
touch of sportiness.
Overall, the EV3 feels like a
more complete package than
the larger EV5 I drove earlier
this year. It benefits from
being built on a dedicated EV
platform, delivering refinement,
space, and dynamic ability in a
compact, sharply priced package
that’s hard to ignore.
