The project reimagines San Francisco's SF Centre site through the collision of two urban orders. The
proposal pivots toward the historic Bartlett Grid, yet remains suspended in the act of turning. Occupying
neither geometry completely, it produces an intermediary urban condition that reconciles both
while extending Market Street into a new civic axis oriented toward Yerba Buena Gardens and
SFMOMA. The resulting figure mediates the excessive scale and rigidity of the downtown grid through
granularity, procession, and redirected urban orientation.
At the center of this transformation stands the preserved 1896 classical façade and rotunda, one of
San Francisco's most significant surviving architectural artifacts. The proposal positions it as the
fulcrum around which an entirely new district rotates. The classicism of the original landmarks is
continued and extended with the addition of alternating campaniles marking the off-ramp, as it were,
of the Market street axis. On other places, classical forms mutate and tumble in dialogue with the
flowering forms; which themselves draw upon images of petals, growth, hearts, organic movement as
archetypal forms capable of producing immediate recognition and emotional response. Against the
permanence of the classical order, these forms suggest emergence, mutation, and continuous
evolution. The resulting architecture is neither historic nor futuristic, but an attempt to give physical
form to a moment of profound cultural and technological transition.
LANGUAGE-FUSING
Drawings are translated
directly into architectural form
and subsequently developed
into a recognizable language
operating across multiple
scales. Here, the drawings
establish both the compositional
logic and formal motifs
of the project, while their three
dimensional realization is
mediated through the
deliberate reemployment of
classical architecture and
Gehry-esque sculptural
iteration. The project's central
ambition is not the invention of
any singular language, but the
successful synthesis of several
seemingly incompatible ones
into a coherent architectural
whole.
A NEW CIVIC ARCHITECTURE
Respect is given to the
compositional intelligence of the
classical tradition. Columns,
orders, and symmetrical
relationships remain present,
though often employed in
unconventional ways and
understood simultaneosly as
tectonic elements and formal
symbols. The contemporary
interventions operate within this
framework, producing a
condition in which stability and
instability, permanence and
transformation, exist simultaneously.
