PROGRAM NOTES
Perhaps the most familiar setting of In The Bleak Midwinter was composed by Gustav
Holst, published in 1906 in The English Hymnal as a hymn tune called Cranham and
simple enough to be sung by a congregation, often during the Christmas season. This
arrangement of In The Bleak Midwinter was created to help young musicians develop
skill in lyrical playing, shaping, and musicianship. While simple enough in harmony and
rhythm, this arrangement allows for all wind players to share in having the melody at
some point throughout the performance of the piece.
