EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Voice of LIV Golf
SU ANN HENG
Editor’s Letter
Dear Reader,
Welcome to this latest issue of Asian GOLF & More,
where we explore how golf continues to grow as
both a sport and a travel experience across Asia and
beyond. The numbers alone tell a compelling story:
Asia now accounts for over 20% of the world’s golfers,
with golf tourism in the region valued at seven billion
US dollars annually and continuing to expand as
infrastructure, air connectivity, and course quality
improve year after year.
We begin in Vietnam, one of the standout success
stories in global golf development. From fewer than
20 courses two decades ago, Vietnam now boasts
more than 75 golf courses, with a government-backed
strategy targeting 100+ courses by the early 2030s.
Golf tourism arrivals have grown at double-digit
rates in recent years, and international events have
helped put Vietnam firmly on the global golfing map.
Few people are more closely associated with this rise
than Greg Norman, Vietnam’s Tourism Ambassador,
and the designer behind several of the country’s
most acclaimed layouts. In this issue, Greg shares his
insights on Vietnam’s long-term vision, investment
levels, and why the country is increasingly viewed as a
must-play destination for travelling golfers.
Complementing this is the perspective of Su Ann
Heng, LIV Golf ’s on-course commentator, who offers
informed analysis on the modern professional game,
LIV Golf ’s global footprint, and how she joined a
group of established golf broadcasters and became
part of the team.
Across Asia, we turn our attention to destinations
that continue to attract large numbers of international
golfers each year. Bangkok remains one of the world’s
great golf hubs, with more than 60 courses within a
two-hour radius and Thailand welcoming over 700,000
golf tourists annually in peak years. Kuala Lumpur
and Johor Bahru strengthen Malaysia’s position
with championship venues, regular professional
tournaments, and excellent accessibility, while the
Philippines, home to over 100 golf courses nationwide,
is seeing renewed interest in Clark and Manila as new
resorts, airport upgrades, and tournament schedules
raise the region’s profile. Just offshore, Batam and
Bintan islands remain popular short-stay escapes,
drawing tens of thousands of golfers each year thanks
to their proximity to Singapore, competitive pricing,
and resort-style layouts.
Beyond the destinations themselves, this issue
delivers practical content designed to make every trip
smoother and more rewarding. Our travel features
include science-backed tips on managing jet lag across
multiple time zones, ideas for incorporating unusual
festivals and cultural attractions into golf itineraries,
and updates from the amateur tournament circuit —
where participation continues to rise as more golfers
combine travel with competition, camaraderie, and
lifestyle experiences.
As always, Asian GOLF & More is about more than
scorecards and statistics. It’s about understanding
the trends shaping the game, discovering where golf
is growing fastest, and finding inspiration for your
next journey. We hope this issue informs, excites, and
encourages you to plan your next round, your next
destination, or perhaps your next great golf adventure.
Enjoy the read, and play well.

Exclusive Interview
Discover Vietnam
An Exclusive
Conversation with
Greg Norman
14 Asian GOLF & More
Legends Da Nang Golf Resort
Greg Norman first came to
Vietnam more than two decades
ago to design a golf course on a
stretch of untouched coastline.
Since then, he’s helped shape
Vietnam into one of the world’s
premier golf destinations. As
he begins his second term as
Vietnam’s Tourism Ambassador,
we caught up with “The Shark” to
talk about his connection to the
country, his favorite courses, and
what’s next for golf in Vietnam.
Q: Do you remember your first visit
to Vietnam? What struck you most
at the time?
Absolutely. My first trip was about
twenty years ago, to a raw coastal site
about 100 kilometers southeast of
Ho Chi Minh City. It was just miles
of towering sand dunes, untouched
and spectacular. That land would
later become The Bluffs Ho Tram,
which has gone on to be recognized
among the Top 100 courses in the
world consecutively since 2018. Even
then, I could see that Vietnam had the
kind of natural landscapes most golf
designers dream about.
Q: How has golf in Vietnam evolved
since that first project?
The growth has been nothing short of
phenomenal. In the past two decades,
Greg Norman Golf Course Design has
completed nine courses across seven
projects in Vietnam – from the south
to the central coast and up north.
What’s been incredible is watching
the entire industry mature: better
infrastructure, more sophisticated
developers, and a government that
truly understands golf ’s potential as a
driver as a driver not just for regular
tourism, but for the golf tourism
market and economic growth.
Q: You’ve designed courses all over
the world. What makes Vietnam
stand out as a golf destination?
Diversity. Every region offers
something completely different.
You’ve got the dunes and ocean views
in the south, lush mountains and river
valleys in the north, and those classic
coastal winds through the central
region. Add in world-class hospitality,
great food, and such rich culture and
wonderfully happy people – it’s a
dream for golfers and travelers alike.
Q: Do you have a favorite course
you’ve designed in Vietnam, or one
that holds special meaning for you?
The Bluffs Ho Tram will always
be special to me. It was the first
course I designed in Vietnam, and
it really set the tone for what the
country could become as a worldclass
golf destination. The site was
extraordinary with towering coastal
dunes and incredible ocean views, and
we were able to preserve so much of
that natural character.

KN Golf Links
The Dunes Course at Da Nang Golf
Club is another favorite. It was one of
the first true links-style courses built
in Vietnam and helped put the central
coast on the global golf map. The
sand-based terrain, wind, and coastal
scenery make it a pure, traditional
golf experience – one that reminds
me of the great seaside courses in
Australia where I grew up.
Q: You have two new courses opening
in 2026—can you tell us about
them?
Yes, and I’m incredibly proud of both.
Văn Lang Empire T&T Golf Club
in Phú Thọ Province is set in the
hills north of Hanoi, with dramatic
elevation changes and views that
stretch for miles. It’s a completely
different experience from the coastal
courses. Then there’s Trường Thịnh
Bảo Ninh on the central coast, which
is a pure links layout carved through
natural dunes and casuarina trees.
Both courses capture the diversity
of Vietnam’s landscapes and show
why it’s one of the most exciting golf
frontiers in the world.
Q: Outside of golf, what do you love
most about visiting Vietnam?
The people and the culture.
Vietnamese hospitality is second to
none. The people are warm, humble,
happy, and genuine. I also love the
food. You can sit on a street corner
with a bowl of pho or a banh mi and
be just as content as you would be in
a fine restaurant. And of course, I’m
always discovering new parts of the
country as there’s so much to explore
beyond the fairways.
The Bluffs
Q: For golfers planning a trip, what’s
your ideal Vietnam itinerary?
I’d say give yourself at least a week!
Start in the south around Ho Chi
Minh City, head up to Da Nang and
the central coast, then finish in Hanoi
and the northern mountains. Each
region feels like a different world.
The best time for golf is November
through April in the north and
February through May in the central
region, but the south is great yearround.
16 Asian GOLF & More
Q: You are currently Vietnam’s Tourism
Ambassador, a role you initially
took on from 2018-2021. What does
that role mean to you personally?
It’s truly one of the greatest honors
of my career. During my first term,
Vietnam was twice named the World’s
Best Golf Destination by the World
Golf Awards (2019, 2021), which was
an incredible recognition of how far
the country had come in such a short
time.
Since then, the growth has been
remarkable. Golf tourism revenue
has been increasing by around 20%
annually since the pandemic, and it’s
projected to reach $1 billion in 2025
– about 10% of all tourism revenue.
There’s also been a 200% increase in
new golf course development since we
opened The Bluffs Ho Tram in 2014.
What I’m most proud of, though,
is seeing golf officially recognized
as a key pillar in Vietnam’s national
tourism strategy for 2026–2030.
That tells you everything about
the country’s long-term vision. In
many ways, Vietnam has created
a blueprint for how golf can drive
tourism, investment, and community
development – a model other
emerging destinations around the
world can learn from. I’m honored to
play even a small role in helping share
that story with the world.

BANGKOK
Alpine Golf & Sports Club
18 holes par 72 (7044 yards)
Widely regarded as Bangkok's finest
layout, Alpine Golf & Sports Club
is a course that every serious golfer
should experience. Designed by
Ronald Garl, Alpine has hosted
some of Asia's biggest tournaments,
including the 2000 Johnnie Walker
Classic, where Tiger Woods produced
a legendary win.
The course itself is as challenging as
it is beautiful—undulating fairways,
dramatic elevation changes, and fastrolling
greens test precision on every
shot. Water hazards and beach-style
bunkers come into play throughout,
with the 7th and 11th holes—twin
island greens—standing out as true
signature challenges.
What makes Alpine remarkable is
how it transforms Bangkok's flat rice
paddies into a lush, rolling parkland
that feels worlds away from the city.
Tall trees, rich vegetation, and bold
earth shaping create a setting that is
both scenic and demanding.
Thailand golfers privileged to play
at Alpine Golf & Sports Club will
have an unforgettable experience as
their golf skills are challenged. The
clubhouse facilities, locker rooms, and
two restaurants (a coffee shop and
gourmet Chinese restaurant) are all
excellent with service to match. For
golfers seeking the ultimate Bangkok
challenge, Alpine is simply a mustplay.
Thai Country Club
18 holes par 72 (7151 yards)
The Thai Country Club is a
prestigious members' course and
is one of the best golf courses in

Nikanti Golf Club
to a comfortable 10-stroke victory.
More recently, the Thai Country
Club hosted the 2007 and 2008
Volvo Masters and the Asian Tour's
International Series in 2024.
The Thai golf course, as expected,
is well-maintained year-round and
features a great variety from hole
to hole, along with an abundance
of water hazards and sand bunkers.
With its immaculate presentation and
conditioning, coupled with a robust
and classic parkland layout, the club
was regularly voted as a Top 5 course
in Asia.
It's hard to imagine the terrain here
was initially flat, especially when
looking across the pleasantly rolling
earth mounds, contoured fairways,
and often elevated greens. The fairway
and greenside bunkering are superb,
almost like a work of art.
Discerning golfers will appreciate this
truly world-class golfing experience.
Thai Country Club's caddies are
amongst the best trained in Thailand.
The award-winning clubhouse is
regularly voted the best in Asia and
caters to every need. Although a
member's club, tour operators do have
access to tee times especially during
the week.
Nikanti Golf Club
18 holes par 72 (6789 yards)
Nikanti Golf Club is a unique 18-hole
course situated in Nakhon Pathom
province, just over an hour West of
Bangkok. The work of Thai golf course
designer and architect Piraporn
Namatra of Golf East, Nikanti, is
revolutionary in more ways than one.
Nikanti sits in the fresh air among
former rice paddies. However, the
Bangkok golf course is almost the
opposite of what one usually finds
around the city. It measures a short
Riverdale
22 Asian GOLF & More
6,789 yards from the black tees for a
start.
Rather than having a traditional front
and back nine, Nikanti is made up of
three loops of six, starting and ending
at the main clubhouse. Finally, each
circuit comprises two par-3s, two
par-4s, and two par-5s. Having an
equal number of par-3, par-4, and
par-5 holes is somewhat unique, but
why not? Par-72 is still on offer, and it
gives golfers the chance to play a wide
variety of holes throughout the round.
Nikanti is a course with a significant
challenge, even for professional
golfers. The fairways, while broad,
feature plenty of mounding and
elevation changes, and flat lies are
the exception rather than the rule at
Nikanti. Meanwhile, many greens
are strongly undulated, run fast
(especially downhill), and are guarded
by bunker complexes. Water comes
into play on many holes, especially on
the par-5s.
Nikanti features an impressive
modern clubhouse with many
amenities only found at private
members' clubs. Full-length lockers,
gourmet food and beverages, an
observation deck, and a lounge with
satellite TV all make you forget that
you are at a daily fee public golf
course. Service is also exemplary,
including 15-minute tee times
to ensure a fast pace of play, allinclusive
and non-cash policies, and
complimentary local beverages and
two meals. All in, Nikanti is one of
Thailand's best golf courses and a
unique Asian golf experience.
Riverdale Golf Club
18 holes par 72 (7006 yards)
Riverdale Golf Club is one of the
few excellent Bangkok golf courses.
Jonathan Morrow and Al Tikkanen
designed and, like Red Mountain,
their other high-profile Phuket golf
course, Riverdale, makes good use
of intelligent routing and elevation
changes. Riverdale may not at first
glance look the most menacing test of
golf. However, it's all an illusion.
The landscape includes several large
lakes, which were dredged to create
the hills surrounding the golf course
and framing most of the holes. The
challenges and considerable charm
of these immaculately groomed links
will quickly assert themselves.
Aside from its excellent conditioning
and challenges, the absolute joy
of Riverdale Golf Club lies in its
beautiful interplay of gently rolling
fairways, many small reed-lined lakes,
raised greens, excellent bunkering,
and large hills that break up some of
the layout's inherent openness.
The signature par-5 6th hole requires
two near-perfect shots to get on in
regulation. The dogleg par-4 7th is a
drivable hole. The twin-green par-3
8th includes a water-protected island
or postage-stamp with a pot bunker.
Enjoy cool refreshments at their
contemporarily styled clubhouse,
which overlooks the 10th and 18th
holes. Elegant locker rooms provide
for excellent changing facilities
characteristic of a 5-star private
members' golf club.
Worth a mention: RG Golf City,
Ballyshear Golf Links and Siam CC
Bangkok.

Malaysia…
Tee Off where Culture and Courses Collide
West Malaysia shares the peninsula with Thailand and Singapore, where most of the country’s golf
courses are located. Kuala Lumpur and Johor are the top two areas for golf vacations. The Malaysian
Golf Association dates back to 1929 and there are around 175 clubs affiliated with it in the modern era,
drawn from fifteen of the nation’s sixteen states and federal territories.
The country offers golfers a wide variety of courses, from hilltop vistas surrounded by their famous tea
plantations, jungle layouts fringed by palm trees, and tracks laid out beside the South China Sea. You
are literally spoilt for choice. Malaysia is close to the equator and therefore temperatures are more or
less constant all year round, hovering between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.
While it could rain anytime in mainland Kuala Lumpur during the afternoons, the best time to travel
for golfing is between May and September. It is the driest time of the year when the rains are less.
Meanwhile, Johor is one of the coolest regions in Malaysia with an average daily high temperature of
only 32 degrees centigrade. It is warm to hot all year round and invites you to bathe at average water
temperatures of 28 degrees.
Many vactioners also head to Langkawi Island.

located 25 minutes from the Johor city

Both Jack Nicklaus Jr. and his famous

The Els Club Desaru Coast, located
in the Southeast of Peninsular

The Ocean Course offers 27 holes of
tournament-ready golf designed by
Ernie Els. Golfers experience three
distinctly different 9-hole courses, the
Lakes (Par 36), Coast (Par 36), and
the Ridge (Par 37). The golf course
meanders through natural wetlands
and lakes as it makes its way through
the spectacular natural rolling terrain

Overall, the Ernie Els course is a
terrific complement to its sister Valley

architect Ross Watson. The club
hosted the 2010 Asian Tour’s Iskandar

significant elevation changes from

characteristic of the golf course is the
bunkers, which have full sand faces.
Additionally, waterfalls, lakes, and

too.

Regions to Visit
Tee Off in
Paradise:
The Philippines Makes
a Grand Return to the
Global Golf Scene
The "Love Philippines" campaign is a national
tourism initiative that promotes the beauty
and cultural heritage of the Philippines. Well,
now you can add the Philippines to your golf
experience "bucket list" … you can now also add
"Love Philippines Golf "as well.
Although the first Philippine course opened over 120
years ago, and there are now over 110 courses there, most
international golf vacationers tend to visit other Asian
destinations, such as Thailand and Vietnam. Well, all that
is about to change as people are now discovering that
many of the courses offer some fantastic challenges.
For international golf vacationers, both Clark and Manila
offer distinct golfing experiences in the Philippines. Clark
features high-quality, resort-style courses in a more relaxed
atmosphere, while Manila offers convenient city golf and
access to prestigious courses in surrounding provinces.
With a fast expressway, the journey from Manila's
international airport to Clark only takes around 90
minutes, or you can also arrive at Clark's own international
airport.
Weatherwise:
The GM at Mimosa Plus GC in Clark said you can play all
year round, and even after a tropical downpour, the longest
they ever had to stop play was just 25 minutes. They design
their courses to cope with the odd downpour!
The dry season, from November to April, is the best time
to play there, as it offers the most favourable weather
conditions.
Hot Season, April and May are the hottest months of the
year, with temperatures starting to climb after the dry
season. Early morning or late afternoon tee times are ideal
to beat the midday heat.
Wet/Green Season: Most rainfall occurs from June to
October, with intermittent showers or thunderstorms.
Typhoon season is from June to November.
CLARK
Unlike Manila, Clark is known for its spaciousness and
a cleaner, less congested environment, offering a more
peaceful backdrop for your golf vacation.
There are currently eight top-quality courses open
to tourists, all within a one-hour drive of Clark and
Angeles City, with three more opening over the next two
years. These courses are well-regarded for their upkeep,
modern amenities, and challenging layouts, designed for
international-level play.
Here are our picks for great golf in Clark
Around 23 minutes from Angeles City, Mimosa Plus
Golf Course is located in the shadow of Mount Pinatubo,
close to the ex-American Clark Air Base. It dates back
to the time of the Americans in the Philippines, and it's
already an iconic golf course with two 18-hole courses—
the challenging Mountainview (a par-70) and the scenic
Acacia Lakeview (a par-72). Set against stunning foothill
mountains and luscious greens of plants and trees, golf–
minded individuals visiting Mimosa will be treated to
spectacular scenery. Renovated in 2016 by Nelson &
Haworth, it offers enhanced playability, visually exciting
holes, striking bunker complexes, and large greens with
subtle contours. They have now added Nite golf too.
Subic International Golf Club has a long history: the
course opened in the 60s as a US military recreation
facility and has had several owners, including Taiwan and
Korean companies. Then, in 2016, Subic International Golf
Club took over the 18-hole golf course, reopening in 2018
as one of the best courses in the country. About an hour's
drive from Angeles City, this championship course was
initially designed by Desmond Muirhead, featuring many
elevation changes and abundant water hazards. The view
from any angle is stunning. This 18 Hole Championship
Golf course (Par 72 and 7,100 yards) is suitable to be
played by golfers of all levels. As you play around this
course, the star attraction here is the rainforest, which has
been untouched for years, and adds to the views and the
overall atmosphere.
Pradera Verde Golf Club is a golfer's paradise nestled
in the scenic province of Pampanga, Philippines. This
prestigious golf club offers an unparalleled golfing
experience with 18 holes of par-72 in a stunning natural
setting. Designed by renowned golf course architect
Robert Trent Jones Jr., it features an 18-hole championship
course that offers a perfect blend of challenge and beauty.
With meticulously manicured fairways, strategically placed
bunkers, and picturesque water features, it provides a test
of skill for golfers of all levels.

facilities, Hann Reserve is set to become one of Asia's most
iconic and must-play golf destinations worldwide.
Where to stay
Clark also offers a variety of places to stay to suit all
budgets, including Hilton, Swissotel, Marriott, Quest Plus,
and Best Western Metro Plus.
We enjoyed some excellent restaurants there, including the
Quest Plus hotel’s steakhouse, RARE Bar & Grill, which
even offered a selection of knives from around the world.
Mexican, Japanese, and Chinese were also great, and there
is even a Hard Rock Cafe on hand if you crave burgers, so
there were places to eat for all tastes.
Those wanting to experience the nightlife can head to
Angeles City, adjacent to Clark, where its Walking Street
is a fun place to spend the evening with a few cool beers
while watching beautiful Filipino girls line-dancing.
To sum up, Clark offers international golfers a relaxed,
self-contained resort-style vacation focused on pristine,
first-class courses, all within a short drive.
MANILA
For international travellers who want to experience the
dynamic culture of the capital while playing golf, Manila
offers a different rhythm. There are approximately 20
golf courses located within and around Manila and its
neighbouring provinces , offering a greater variety of
course designs. Many Manila golf clubs are members-only
courses, so it’s best to check ahead to see if you can get a
tee time through your tour operator.
Here are a few golfing gems in and around Manila.
Eagle Ridge Golf & Country Club offers the largest
golfing facility in the Philippines, with an incredible four
championship-level courses designed by Greg Norman,
Isao Aoki, Andy Dye, and Sir Nick Faldo. It takes only up
to one hour to drive there from Makati City, Manila, and
you are spoilt for choice here, as these golf courses will suit
players at all levels. All four courses are par 72 but with
different lengths. The Isao Aoki course has 6,990 yards,
the Greg Norman course has 7,123 yards, the Andy Dye
course has 7,323 yards, and the Sir Nick Faldo course runs
at a hefty 7,443 yards. Their clubhouse facilities are second
to none. It might be advisable to book an early tee time to
drive down from Manila before rush hour.
Nestled at the foot of Mount Makiling in Calamba,
Laguna, Ayala Greenfield Golf & Leisure Club is
approximately 70 minutes south of Manila. A stunning
championship golf experience surrounded by lush forests,
rolling fairways, and breathtaking panoramic views of
Laguna de Bay and the Tagaytay Ridge. Designed by the
world-renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr.,
this 18-hole, par-72 course combines natural beauty with
strategic play, making it a favorite destination for golfers
of all levels. Here, wide fairways are framed by tropical
greenery, challenging bunkers, and undulating greens,
while the cool mountain breeze adds to the relaxing
atmosphere.
Sherwood Hills Golf Club is one of three Jack Nicklaus
signature golf courses in the country and is the Golden
Bear’s favorite. Located only 55 km outside Makati City,
Nicklaus created 18 excellent holes that are now always
listed in the top 5 in the country. Since 2011, the Sherwood
Hills course has been featured in the Rolex World’s Top
100 Golf Courses. Jack made excellent use of the natural
landscape, which features relatively few trees but lots of
thick brush, to produce a course in the style of an inland
36 Asian GOLF & More
links. The course plays to 7,265 yards and features wide
fairways and mostly small greens. The generous fairways
make for the bump-and-run game, very typical of links
golf. Volcanic gorges run along the front nine on one side,
and the 1st has, in addition, a -off right before the green.
Manila Southwoods Golf & Country Club, opened in
1992, quickly gained international recognition. In fact,
it was named the top golf course in the Philippines by
Golf Digest in 2020. Around 90 minutes from Manila,
you have two 18-hole layouts—the Master’s Course and
the Legends Course, both designed by Jack Nicklaus. The
Master’s Course is long, playing at 7,342 yards from the
back tees, with many bunkers and narrow fairways, and
15 holes have water hazards. The Master’s Course is one of
the toughest Nicklaus-designed 18-hole 18 holes in Asia.
The Legends Course is a shorter layout. Playing 6,912
yards with bunkers designed mainly on the left side of the
fairways, water hazards on the right side. There are two
5-star clubhouses, one for each course!
City Lifestyle
Staying in Manila means you are a short ride away from
world-class restaurants, massive shopping centres, and
a bustling nightlife. It’s an ideal choice if you want to
combine golfing with a more extensive city holiday.
Manila, though, is known for its heavy traffic, so
navigating it can be unpredictable and significantly
increase travel time to and from courses, especially during
peak hours.
To sum up, Manila is best for golfers who want to combine
their passion for the game with a vibrant urban experience,
exploring a wider array of courses and off-course activities.
Many courses are members-only, so it is vital to book
through a recognised tour operator.
Conclusion: The Philippines offers golf vacationers
seeking new pastures first-class golfing memories and is
definitely worth adding to your bucket list.
Clark and Manila can make an enjoyable two-centre
vacation, but for those who want a more relaxing trip, it’s
best to head for Clark.
Enjoy and LOVE the Philippines!

Exclusive Interview
Su-Ann Heng is a former No.
1-ranked golfer in her native
Singapore and a six-time member of
the Singapore Ladies National Team.
She moved on to becoming a TV
analyst, starting with FOX Sports in
Asia, covering the LPGA tour. Then
the 37-year-old joined LIV Golf
from its inception in June 2022 as
part of their broadcast team, and she
now travels to all the tournaments,
providing on-course commentary
and analysis.
We caught up with this globe-trotting
Singaporean and asked her how
things are now going on the LIV
Tour?
From being an analyst in the FOX
Sports studio to walking the fairways
as a LIV Golf commentator was
a big step. How did this move come
about?
I had worked with James Watson
(now our SVP of Worldwide
Production) between 2016/2017 on
one or two events on the Asian Tour
as a commentator and have managed
to keep in touch since then. So, when
LIV was putting together a broadcast
team, James threw my name in the
hat, and the rest is history.
In those early days, the tour was
trying to offer a different type of
broadcast style. Were you given a
free hand in how to cover the oncourse
commentating?
Very lucky to say that we all did. At
the beginning, walking into this it
was very different from what I was
accustomed to, and honestly quite
refreshing. I remembered after the
first event back in 2022 at Centurion,
one of the main feedback from our
producers and bosses were simply to
be more ourselves and not feel like we
were holding back. We are all from
different generations, backgrounds,
countries and cultures and we were
given space to try few different styles,
cadence, flow, humour, tone etc. It
felt like (at the beginning) five or six
friends who are sitting on a couch
together, watching the golf and
calling It that way- bit more banter
LIV Golf’s Lead On
Course Commentator
and more of a conversation rather
than purely calling the golf, which
is so much fun and hope that the
viewers feel like they’re joining us on
the couch watching some golf. I’m
extremely lucky to have a team of
fellow announcers who all really enjoy
each other’s company not only on the
course/on air but we hang out a lot
outside of work and I think having
that chemistry (which is hard to come
Su Ann Heng

by) helps so much and gives me so
much confidence to be more of my
authentic self on air.
You are well known for your humour
both on and off the course.
Have you had any amusing incidents
with fans and the LIV players?
Haha! Am I? Didn’t know that but
that’s very flattering. I’ve definitely
had a few moments with the fans
40 Asian GOLF & More
and players. But I think one of the
more memorable moments were in
Adelaide back in 2023. I was wearing
a LIV t-shirt that had Cameron
Smith’s silhouette on, and walked past
a group of guys, wearing the same
shirt so they asked for a photo as I
was walking down the fairway, so I
joined them for a picture. The guy
that used his phone for the photo said
“Now I have a photo to show Santa
what I want for Christmas this year”.
I paused and looked back and said
“Damn, that is a great line”. And we all
laughed.
All of you in the broadcast team
have been together since the start.
Has this helped you personally
by having the input of the likes of
David Feherty in the advice you have
received, especially on fronting your
popular Podcasts with Jerry Foltz?
Absolutely, without a doubt. Arlo
White, Jerry Foltz, David Feherty,
and Dom Boulet have all been in the
business for a long time and have
seen and been through it all. They’ve
all called some of the most iconic
tournaments and moments in golf and
football (for Arlo). They’ve all been
a mentor to me in more ways than
one and are also like brothers to me.
Sometimes I get tough love, which is
sometimes what we need to get better.
I am extremely grateful to have them
in my corner. I remember my 2nd
year on LIV, I had to interview Martin
Kaymer after his round. It had been
a long day in Bangkok, it was hot,
and I started to get foggy during the
interview and lost my train of thought
and felt like I blew the interview. I
felt so embarrassed about it and was
pretty upset with myself. The next
day, David pulls me aside at the hotel
lobby and says to me “Listen, people
care about what the player says and
their expressions. What matters is
you got the answer out of Martin,
and you made him smile. And that’s
what matters. Don’t be too hard on
yourself, we all fumble and lose our
train of thought once in a while” and I
immediately cried. It meant so much
to me that he took the time to tell me
that. I’ll never forget it.
As a member of the LIV Golf team,
do you find the players are perhaps
more open and friendly when you
approach them for interviews?
I think because we as a LIV family,
went through it all together, there’s
definitely an instant camaraderie
within the whole organisation from
staff to volunteers, and players and
caddies. So that helps for sure. But I
think it’s also relationship building,
building trust, and getting to really
understand the players on and off the
course that’s also important.
What players are the easiest to
interview?
Haha this is like picking your
favourite child. I’m not sure about
easiest to interview as I feel like each
interview is quite unique and It all
depends on the circumstances. Sorry,
I wish I had a juicer answer.
What is your favourite LIV Golf
destination to date?
Adelaide. It’s a VIBE!
You literally travel the world…. we
assume not in economy anymore.
What are your tips on avoiding jet
lag?
I try and schedule daytime arrival at
my destination, get to the gym, or a
sauna if the hotel has one- get a good
sweat, go out and explore, stay out in
the sunlight and avoid going back to
your room till it’s close to bedtime.
Napping doesn’t work for me as I
don’t end up going into a deep sleep
when its bedtime. Which ends up in
a vicious cycle and hardly ever get on
the right time zone. And immediately
get on the mealtimes once you’re
there. Even if you’re not hungry to just
have a small snack so your body can
adjust to digestion etc.
Finally, as a Singaporean, when you
just want to play a few rounds, what
are your favourite Asian courses?
I may be biased, but I love the Sentosa
Golf Club in Singapore. Its great track
and you can always rely on it being in
a great condition.

Stephen Banks
Desert Lakes Golf Club, Saudi
to Aquella Golf & Country Club
Phuket Thailand
Originally where are you from?
I’m originally from Northern England
through and through. I grew up in
Whitefield, just outside Manchester,
a place where football is a religion,
humor is dry, and the weather builds
character whether you want it to or
not.
What was your first job after leaving
school?
At eight years old, delivering
newspapers at 5:30 am in the cold, wet
& dark UK. By 14, I was balancing
paper rounds, washing cars, and
working in Safeway supermarket in
the dairy department. After school, I
studied Golf Management at Kingston
University in Surrey, then graduated
with honors during my PGA Studies
winning The Lord Derby Trophy
presented by Sandy Jones & Ken
Schofield. My professional career
began immediately after university
in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where
from 1995 to 2000 I was part of the
pioneering group helping grow the
game and managing Desert Lakes
Golf Club for 5 years.
How did you get into golf?
Golf became my life at a very young
age. Summers were spent riding
our bikes to Bury Golf Club with
my brother Dazza, arriving at dawn
and staying until dusk — chipping,
putting, playing nine holes, you name
it. Golf wasn’t something we did
occasionally; it was our world. One of
the most formative moments came in
1990, when my dad took me and my
brother to The Open Championship
at St Andrews. I watched Sir Nick
Faldo win wearing his blue Farah
trousers and Pringle waistcoat, with
the RAF jets flying overhead and the
crowds chanting his caddie’s name,
Fanny. That image is burned into
my memory. A full-circle moment
came years later at the Faldo Series in
Vietnam in 2024, where I was able to
tell that very story to Sir Nick himself
and to competitors from around the
world. I’ve been a PGA Member of
GB&I for over 20 years, now a PGA
Fellow, and I’m on the journey toward
Master Member — the professional
backbone of my career as a Golf &
Country Club GM.
What clubs have you worked for
before?
My career has taken me across Asia,
the Middle East, Africa, Europe,
and the Caribbean. Alongside

private clubs, castle estates and
resort destinations, I’ve worked with
some of the world’s leading luxury

Golf Course Services back in 2012 for
a pre-opening in Nigeria, including,
advisory, and turnaround projects
globally.
What attracted you to work at
Aquella?
The transformation work I led at
Laguna Lăng Cô, Vietnam prepared
me well for Aquella’s growth phase. I
also had long-standing relationships
with IMG and strong professional
connections with Russell Hannah
and Paul Burley. Thailand holds deep
personal meaning for me — from
travelling the country on a scooter in

As an expat, do you manage to have
a family life away from the course?
I have a wonderful wife and two
amazing daughters — Scarlett (19),
a talented soprano, and Augusta
(16), a confident globe-trotter.
Being away is never easy, but we stay
closely connected and make our time
together meaningful.

What are the attractions of living in

Sunshine helps, but it’s the energy,
culture, and people that truly make
tropical living special. Professionally,
tropical golf keeps you sharp and
accountable. I’ve lived the coastal
and island life before — Bali, the
Caribbean, Egypt — so Phuket feels
natural.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club
56
Asian GOLF & More
One of the World’s
Longest and
Highest Courses
We had the pleasure of visiting Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club earlier
this year in April, and it truly stands out as one of the most spectacular golfing
experiences that we have ever had. Our hotel was the InterContinental Lijiang,
located right by the Old Town, which was the perfect base for exploring the
area and soaking in the local culture. The drive to the golf course took about 40
minutes, and every minute of that journey through the mountain scenery built
up the anticipation.
The moment we stepped onto the first tee and looked out over the towering
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, we genuinely had goosebumps. The backdrop
is simply surreal, snow-capped peaks rising over 5,500 meters above sea level,
framing an immaculate fairway below. The course itself is set at an altitude of
around 3,100 meters, making it one of the highest golf courses in the world and
the longest Par 72 course in the world 8,548 yards! Because of the elevation,
the ball travels significantly farther, something you really notice once you start
playing!
Beyond the breathtaking scenery, the design of the course offers a great mix of
challenge and beauty, with long par 5s, and fast greens. Despite the thin air, the
caddies and staff were incredibly attentive, ensuring a seamless experience both
on and off the course. The photos speak for themselves!
For anyone considering a China golf tour, we can’t recommend Yunnan and
especially Jade Dragon Snow Mountain highly enough. It is a destination that
perfectly blends golf with culture, nature, and comfort. Check out our Golfasian
China programs that can easily combine rounds here with courses in Kunming,
such as Spring City and Lakeview, offering a complete and unforgettable golfing
journey.

range of durations, from day trips to
overnight and multi-night options,
with activities such as kayaking, cave

by season, with high season (Jan-Apr,
Oct-Dec) more expensive than low
season (May-Sep), and are categorised
into budget, mid-range, and luxury
options. It is recommended to book in
advance, especially during peak times,
and consider cruises that go beyond
the main Halong Bay into areas like
Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay to avoid
crowds.
Cambodia. Cruising between Ho

Golfing Tips
Tips for playing in
Southeast Asia during the
Spring and Summer
For spring and summer golfing
in Southeast Asia, expect a mix of
hot, humid weather and heavy but
often brief rain showers during the
monsoon season. To make the most of
your trip, focus on hydration, dressing
for the tropical climate, and smart tee
time planning. Most Asian courses
offer outstanding hospitality, great
locker rooms, attentive staff, and wellmaintained
facilities. Arrive early to
enjoy the experience.
WEATHERWISE
The season can be broken down by
typical regional weather patterns:
Spring (March–April): This is the
region's hot season, with temperatures
increasing and minimal rainfall,
making for challenging but playable
conditions. Daily highs can reach
35–40°C (95–104°F) in some areas.
Summer (May–October): Often
known as the "green" or "rainy"
season, this period features lower
prices, excellent course conditions
and fewer crowds, but also higher
humidity and the risk of afternoon
tropical downpours. Rainfall typically
occurs in short, intense bursts that
last under an hour, usually in the
afternoon or evening. The rain cools
the air, and most high-quality courses
are built with excellent drainage
systems, allowing for play to resume
quickly.
ESSENTIAL CLOTHING
For your comfort on the course wear
moisture-wicking fabric. Lightweight,
breathable polos and shorts made
from synthetic fabrics help you stay
dry and cool. Avoid cotton, which
absorbs moisture and tends to stay
wet. Check out https://fenixxcell.com/
for their Asia range of golfing apparel.
Use a high-SPF, broad-spectrum
sunscreen and reapply frequently.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap
and UV-protective sunglasses. Bring
a large, double-canopy umbrella for
severe downpours. Also, a pair of rain
gloves will provide a superior grip in
wet conditions.
HYDRATION AND SAFETY
The heat and humidity make
hydration a top priority, so stay
hydrated before, during, and after
your round. Carry a large water bottle
and drink regularly, even if you don't
feel thirsty.
ON-COURSE STRATEGY
Schedule your rounds for early
morning to avoid the peak heat and
afternoon rain showers. To conserve
energy in the heat, book a golf cart.
(On most courses, it is compulsory)
and many also have ice boxes for cold
drinks. Most courses in the region
offer experienced caddies (mainly
female) who can offer excellent local
knowledge of course conditions and
will hold your umbrella to keep you
in the shade. Caddies survive on their
tips so after the round don’t forget to
tip them…average is US$15-20)
Remember, even on cloudy days in
the tropics, you can still get sunburnt,
so use factor 50 as your friend! Pace
of Play Is Relaxed. Rounds may
be slightly slower than in Western
countries due to heat and caddie
interaction, so settle into the rhythm
and enjoy it.

Fellow Golfers
Fellow Golfers,
It’s Time to Legalize
the “Gimme” Circle for
Tourists in Asia
For casual players on holiday, golf is
about fresh air, good company, and
maybe a cold Singha or Tiger at the
turn. Nobody books a trip to Hua
Hin, Danang, or Phnom Penh just to
stress over a two-foot putt.
In Thailand, many resort courses
already look the other way when
a tourist scoops up a short one. In
Japan, some clubs discreetly use
a chalk circle around the cup for
visiting groups, making it clear what’s
“in.” It speeds up play and keeps
things friendly.
SO WHY NOT MAKE IT
OFFICIAL?
Do we really want to see tourists
standing over a knee-knocker in
35-degree Bangkok heat, sweating like
they’re on the 72nd hole of the U.S.
Open? Or watch a first-time visitor in
Da Nang three-putt from three feet
while the group behind fumes? That’s
not golf tourism—it’s torture.
THE CASE FOR A CIRCLE
A defined gimme circle—say, the
length of a putter grip or 18 inches—
levels the field for everyone. It’s fair,
fast, and consistent.
• In Phuket, where groups often
include beginners, it keeps rounds
moving.
• In Pattaya, it keeps beer-soaked
buddies from arguing over whether
that shaky 2-footer “counted.”
• In Hanoi, where daylight hours are
shorter, it helps visitors squeeze in
18 holes before sunset.
THE PURISTS WILL
COMPLAIN…
Yes, Jack Nicklaus might frown. Yes,
handicaps won’t be “real.” But let’s be
honest: most tourists aren’t posting
those scores anyway. They’re here for
holiday bragging rights, not a slot at
the World Amateur.
Golf has always adapted to its culture.
In Scotland, they play fast in the wind.
In Japan, they break for a full meal
after nine holes. In Asia’s resort golf
boom, why not add the tourist gimme
circle?
FINAL THOUGHT
Let the locals grind over every putt if
they wish. But for travelers teeing it
up in Bangkok, Bali, or Boracay, golf
should be a joy, not a chore.
Tourism golf is about smiles, not
strokes. So paint the circle, wave the
putts, and let the good times roll.
It may not be “pure golf,” but for
traveling players, it’s the difference
between frustration and fun. Make
gimmes official.

The Joy of
Competition and
Camaraderie
Where Every Golfer Feels Like a Pro
Across Asia, golf has evolved far
beyond the fairways. It’s become a
global meeting ground — a place
where camaraderie counts as much as
the scorecard. Over the past decade,
Golfasian’ amateur tournaments
have grown into some of the most
anticipated golf weeks in the region,
bringing together players from more
than 30 countries. They come not just
for the spectacular courses, but for
the atmosphere — a mix of friendly
rivalry, tropical hospitality, and
laughter that continues long after the
last putt drops.
Each event is crafted to give golfers
a professional-style experience
without the pressure. You don’t have
to be Rory McIlroy or Jeeno Thitikul
to join. Flights are balanced by
handicap, the vibe is friendly, and the
organization takes care of every detail
— from airport transfers to nightly
social functions. The result is an
effortless week of golf, fun, and new
friendships that keeps people coming
back year after year.
Golfasian’s 2026 season spans six

And that’s only part of the story. With
more tournaments and golf weeks
continually being added, there’s
always another event waiting to be
discovered.
MORE THAN A GAME
What truly sets these tournaments
apart is the shared experience.
Golfers compete seriously but laugh
easily. Strangers become teammates,
teammates become friends, and many
return year after year — sometimes
even planning their holidays around
the events.
The social side is just as memorable
as the golf. Opening dinners, awards
nights, excursions, and evening
entertainment give everyone a
chance to unwind and celebrate. The
combination of friendly competition,
sunshine, and genuine hospitality
makes every event feel like a golf
holiday with purpose.
THE SPIRIT OF GOLF,
REIMAGINED
Golfasian’s tournaments are built
on one simple idea: golf should be
enjoyed. They strip away the formality
of the sport and replace it with
warmth, energy, and connection.
It’s an experience where you can
challenge yourself, explore new
destinations, and share the journey
with like-minded golfers from around
the world.
So pack your clubs, bring your sense
of humor, and join us somewhere in
Asia next year. Whether it’s Thailand’s
beaches, Vietnam’s coastline,
Malaysia’s championship courses, or
the Philippines’ welcoming fairways
— you’ll find a Golfasian event
waiting to remind you why you fell in
love with the game in the first place.

across Southeast Asia. Therefore, so
you are ready to make some birdies
from day one, here are some tips on
avoiding jet lag.
When travelling East to Southeast
Asia from Europe or America, you
cross numerous time zones and
"lose time," making jet lag more
challenging than when travelling
West.
BEFORE YOUR FLIGHT
Several days before departure,
gradually shift your sleep schedule
by 30-60 minutes earlier each day to
"advance" your internal clock closer
to the destination time zone. During
this pre-adjustment period, expose
yourself to bright light (natural
sunlight is best) as early as possible in
the morning to reinforce the earlier
wake time. You can try a specialised
jet lag app, such as Timeshifter or
Entrain, which creates a personalised
plan for when to seek or avoid light,
consume caffeine.
DURING THE FLIGHT
If flying East, get light exposure in
the 2nd half of the night and early
morning according to your time zone.
If flying West, get light exposure in
the early evening and the first half
of the night according to your old
time zone. If it's nighttime at your
destination, try to sleep using an eye
mask and earplugs. Avoid screen time
for at least an hour before you plan to
sleep.
Beyond just drinking plain water,
consider adding electrolyte powders
or a pinch of sea salt to your water
to stay properly re-mineralised and
hydrated. The dry cabin air is very
dehydrating, and this can generally
help you feel better. Avoid excessive
alcohol and caffeine, which can
worsen dehydration and disrupt sleep.
Take a few energy bars to snack on
board too.
In addition to general stretching
and walking, incorporate specific
movements to stimulate circulation
and the lymphatic system, such as
air squats, calf raises, or toe touches.
It is worth booking an aisle seat,
preferably in the centre of the plane,
so your neighbours can get up on the
other side to avoid waking you up.
Set your watch to the local time as
soon as you board and try to eat and
sleep according to the destination's
schedule.
Please wear comfortable clothing
in layers, as it can be hot when you
board, but during the flight, the
cabin temperature tends to drop. It is
also worth investing in a good neck
cushion and noise-cancelling eye
masks with Bluetooth.
AFTER YOUR FLIGHT
Seek out daylight as soon as possible
upon arrival to help reset your body's
internal clock. If you need to nap,
keep it short (15-20 minutes) to avoid
disrupting your nighttime sleep. Keep
moving during the day to help you
feel more awake and stay in sync with
the new time zone.
Give yourself a buffer day before any
important events to allow your body
more time to adjust. Then you are
ready to hit the fairways and take in
some exceptional golf experiences in
Asia.

“Golf balls are like eggs: they’re white,

THE LAWS OF GOLF
LAW 1: No matter how bad your last shot was, the
worst is yet to come. This law does not expire on the
18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to
extend over the course of a tournament, a summer
and, eventually, a lifetime.
LAW 2: Your best round of golf will be followed
almost immediately by your worst round ever. The
probability of the latter increases with the number of
people you tell about the former.
LAW 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic.
Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known
fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater
its attraction to water.
LAW 4: The higher a golfer’s handicap, the more
qualified he deems himself as an instructor.
LAW 5: Sand is alive. If it isn’t, how do you explain the
way it works against you?

on the brand’s 5+ year

craft apparel that elevates

You’ve been the exclusive apparel

What’s been the key to building and
sustaining this long-term relationship?

Asian GOLF & More
you have created a unique design for
every Golfasian tournament. Why is
this level of creativity and flexibility
so valuable for golf events, clubs,
and sponsors compared to traditional
suppliers?
“I finally realised after many years
of trying to compete against the big
brands, that I had to do something
different and refine what we offered
previously. We now work with clients
to understand their needs, rather
than what they have to buy from our
standard catalogue. We still have a
great retail range, which does well.
But the bespoke offerings have really
helped the business to grow rapidly in
the last few years.”
The golf apparel industry is full
of brands, from long-established
names to new challengers. How does
Fenix XCell set itself apart from
other golf apparel brands in the
market?
“It would be our bespoke offering to
the customer. Working with them to
create a unique collection for a shop
or a unique design for a tournament. “
Fenix XCell operates globally but is
based in Bangkok, Thailand — right
in the heart of Asia’s golf scene. How
does this location influence the way
you work with clients both locally
and internationally? Does being
close to your manufacturing and design
partners give you an advantage
in terms of creativity, speed, and
building strong relationships?
“Our location is definitely a
strategic and logistical advantage
for our manufacturing and design
capabilities. With all of our team
on-site, we can control the product
from start to finish and don’t have
any unwanted surprises at the end.
We’re also close to partners such
as Golfasian, exciting tours and
ambassadors, as well as incredible golf
clubs this side of the world, which is
a massive part of why we can deliver
precisely what people are looking
for - by adding that personal touch
and involving them in the creative
process. “
Golf is changing fast — from
technology in apparel to new event
formats and fan experiences. How
do you see Fenix XCell adapting to
these trends and staying ahead of
the curve over the next five years?
“On the design and production side,
we’re always sourcing new materials
at the cutting edge of technology.
Partnering with exciting tours and
newer golf experiences is also key
to staying ahead of the curve —
keeping us at the forefront of golf
not just in design, but in innovation,
performance, and the overall player
experience.”
What’s next for Fenix XCell? Where
do you see the brand evolving in
the coming years, and what’s your
ultimate vision for where you’d like
to take it?
“For us, the next chapter is about
expanding globally while staying
true to what sets Fenix XCell apart
— premium performance apparel
with a bespoke edge. Our vision is
to establish Fenix XCell as a global
leader in golf and custom apparel,
trusted for quality, innovation, and
design. From outfitting the world’s
most exciting tours to creating
tailored collections for our partners,
we’ll continue pushing boundaries
and elevating the golf apparel
experience on and off the course.”
