Rethinking cost-effective moulding: Smaller

machines, smarter savings

n the world of plastics manufacturing, bigger has too often

Ibeen mistaken for better. High-cavitation tooling and large,

high-tonnage presses have long been the default strategy

for driving volume. But as markets evolve, product lifecycles

shorten, and customers demand faster, leaner solutions, a

different model is proving its worth: pairing smaller, lowercost

tooling with efficient, right-sized moulding machines.

It is greener too as less energy is used in manufacturing the

tooling and less energy used while moulding the parts.

Plastic Parts Direct says the beauty of this approach lies in

its simplicity. Instead of investing heavily in complex multicavity

tools destined for large machines, clients can achieve

significant savings by running streamlined tooling on

compact, energy-efficient presses. These machines not only

consume less energy but also offer quicker setups, lower

hourly rates, and an agility that today’s manufacturing

landscape demands.

Typically, a 4-cavity mould can produce up to 7 million

mouldings per year, yet be ideal for ramp up in the early life

of a product with a capacity of up to 29,000 parts per day.

For customers of Plastic Parts Direct, the value

proposition is clear:

t Affordable tooling: Smaller tools mean lower upfront

costs and quicker lead times.

t Competitive part pricing: Reduced machine-hour rates

and energy use keep production costs in check.

t Flexibility for growth: Ideal for medium and low

volume runs, with the ability to scale intelligently as

demand grows.

Joe Bowes (MD at Plastic Parts Direct) commented, for our

clients, this strategy is more than a cost-saving measure

– it’s a pathway to resilience. We are aligning tooling and

machine size to the project’s true requirements, clients

performance, and long-term reliability.

Our in-house engineering team provides

expert design-for-manufacture guidance,

while our established network of supply

partners across the UK, Europe, and the

Far East allows us to scale production

efficiently and cost-effectively. Whether

you’re prototyping or scaling to volume,

we deliver with confidence.

Need speed? Our express manufacturing

service can deliver fully finished boards

in as little as 3 working days – without

compromising on quality. From concept to

completion, we’re committed to exceeding

expectations.

avoid overspending on capacity

that may never be used, while

still maintaining precision and

repeatability.

This is not about cutting corners;

it’s about cutting waste. Smaller

machines, when matched with the

right tooling, deliver high-quality

moulded parts with efficiency that

large-scale setups simply can’t match

for certain applications. In an era where

sustainability and profitability must go

hand in hand, the case for ‘right-sizing’

production has never been stronger

The message is clear said Joe, smart beats big and costly.

By embracing the balance of compact tooling and efficient

moulding machines, Plastic Parts Direct can deliver costeffective

solutions that meet today’s market demands –

and tomorrow’s challenges.

3 real-life electronics manufacturing

challenges resolved with MRP Software

M

anaging the manufacture of electronics is as

complex as the products themselves. This

complexity can be significantly reduced,

however, with the help of powerful software, now

accessible to manufacturers of any size. Here are

three real-life examples of issues faced by electronics

manufacturers and how MRP or manufacturing ERP

software can help resolve them.

1) Managing complex bills of materials

Efficient management of BOMs is crucial for precise production

planning and scheduling. Understanding the components

of a BOM and their interdependencies ensures resources are

correctly allocated, necessary parts are available on time, and

the production flow is smooth. In essence, well-documented

and managed BOMs provide a clear roadmap for production,

enabling an accurate and efficient schedule.

Moreover, with the effective management of multi-level and

configurable BOMs, manufacturers can handle variations of

intricate products, manage diverse product lines, and adapt

to customer-specific requirements without disrupting or

needlessly complicating the overall production process.

One of the biggest challenges in electronics BOM

management is keeping track of product changes and

updates, which is where version and revision control

comes into play. By implementing a system that tracks

each change in a product’s bill of materials, manufacturers

can make sure that production is always based on the

latest BOM version, thereby preventing costly mistakes and

confusion. Version control also allows product engineers

to easily revert back to previous versions of the BOM.

Managing configurable, constantly changing BOMs with

tens or hundreds of subassemblies in spreadsheets is close

to impossible. However, by implementing cloud-based

MRP software, electronics manufacturers can simplify BOM

management, ensuring accurate production planning and

scheduling. Moreover, with robust version control features,

it safeguards against costly mistakes and confusion

by tracking product changes in real time and enabling

seamless transitions between BOM versions.

“When we start producing new items, drawing up new bills

of materials and getting them linked up with production

planning takes just a few hours now instead of days,” says

Kendra Scappaticci, Operations Manager at KS2, a Canadian

automotive battery and electronics manufacturer. “Thanks

to MRPeasy, we can upload a new BOM, be ready to submit

manufacturing orders, and send out invoices associated

with the new product within the same day now.”

2) Communication gaps between departments and facilities

In an electronics manufacturing setup, synergy between

different departments is crucial for overall productivity.

Traditional siloed systems wherein each department

uses separate software or documents often lead to

communication gaps, resulting in errors and bottlenecks.

Cloud-based MRP software facilitates the seamless

integration of all departments, facilities, and even

subcontractors into a single system.

This software allows the real-time sharing of information,

making pertinent data instantly available for all the

parties involved. For instance, a change in the BOM by the

engineering department or an approved customer order

can be instantly visible to procurement, inventory, and

production teams. This helps in faster decision-making

and effective resource management.

Another perk of cloud-based software is that it

accommodates scalability and geographical diversification

effortlessly. Whether a company operates from multiple

production or warehousing sites or even manages remote

work scenarios, the software ensures that communication

and data access is never compromised as long as an

internet connection is available.

“We had staff in two locations in the US, plus the procurement

department in Taiwan, therefore we needed a system that

could be accessed from anywhere,” says Dennis Lan, Supply

Chain Director at Anthem One, an LED lighting solutions

manufacturer from Arizona. “Before implementing MRPeasy, it

was hard to tell which part was where. Now, we know exactly.”

3) Traceability and regulatory compliance

Traceability in the supply chain is pivotal for electronics

manufacturers for several reasons, ranging from compliance

with regulatory standards to managing returns and recalls.

With cloud-based MRP software, tracking every component,

right from procurement through production to the final

product shipment, is achievable.

Quality inspections can be tracked and recorded

systematically. In case of a quality issue, the software aids

in identifying the root causes by tracking back the specific

batch, a particular component, or the employee involved.

This swift identification and resolution of problems

significantly reduce downtime and enhance customer

satisfaction.

Moreover, the software’s Return Material Authorisation

(RMA) module can streamline returns and recall

management. With it, tracking the return journey of a faulty

product, analysing the issue, executing corrective measures,

and documenting these processes is seamless and efficient.

“With the software, I’m able to track components and

achieve traceability throughout the order chain,” says

Ralph Jones, Director at Britannia 2000 Holdings, an

aerospace electronics manufacturer. “So, if we have a bad

batch, we can find out which MOs and POs they were part

of. Everything we manufacture is serial numbered and

MRPeasy helps us track these as well.”

IKO Nippon Thompson expands LM Series Linear Bushing

range with new integrated flange mounting options

KO Nippon Thompson, a global leader in

Ihigh-precision motion components,

is proud to announce a significant

expansion of its acclaimed LM

Series Linear Bushing range. In a

major update to the product line,

the series now includes flangetype

mounting configurations,

a feature previously unavailable

in this specific range, offering

engineers newfound flexibility in

high-precision assembly.

The IKO Linear Bushing LM Series

is a high-quality, reliable, and

affordable solution manufactured

in Japan. These mechanisms utilise a

synthetic resin retainer and high-precision

balls to deliver a smooth rolling motion with

an extremely low co-efficient of friction.

This design significantly reduces power

consumption and lowers operating

temperatures compared to

conventional sliding bushings.

New mounting versatility

The most notable addition to the

LM series is the introduction of

two distinct flange configurations:

t Metric Round Flange (LMFT...

UU): Ideal for traditional circular

mounting interfaces.

t Metric Square Flange (LMKT...

UU): Designed for compact spaces

and applications requiring specific

orientation.

By integrating the flange directly onto the external

cylinder, IKO has eliminated the need for complex,

high-tolerance housing bores.

This allows the bushings

to be bolted directly to

mounting surfaces,

streamlining the

manufacturing process

and reducing the overall

number of required

components.

Advanced Engineering and

Global Standards

The LM Series is engineered to meet the needs of

the global market, offering sizes in Metric, Metric

European Specification, and Inch series. To ensure

longevity and performance, all bushings feature a

double-seal structure (UU) as standard, incorporating end

seals with superior dust protection to prevent the intrusion

of foreign substances.

Designed for versatility, these

bushings are suitable for a wide

array of applications, including air

cylinders, measuring instruments

like dial gauges, lifting stages,

and electric actuators. While the

synthetic resin retainer ensures

quiet operation, it also allows for an

operating temperature of up to 100°C.

The new flange-type LM Series linear bushings

are available for immediate order. For more

Tomorrow’s Warehouse Event Review

Tomorrow’s Warehouse Manchester:

Practical insight for a changing sector

T

omorrow’s Warehouse Event took place last year

on the 30th September 2025 at the Old Trafford

Cricket Ground.

Last year, the Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground in

Manchester played host to one of the logistics and

warehousing sector’s most significant one-day gatherings:

Tomorrow’s Warehouse. Positioned as a hybrid conference

and exhibition tailored for industry professionals, the 2025

edition delivered on its promise to illuminate the challenges

and opportunities shaping today’s warehouse operations.

With a packed programme of seminars, expert speakers,

and a bustling exhibitor floor, the event affirmed its growing

reputation as an essential fixture in the UK logistics calendar.

At its core, Tomorrow’s Warehouse was designed to

help practitioners navigate a landscape undergoing

rapid transformation. From technological innovation

and automation to talent development and operational

resilience, this one-day free-to-attend format provided

both breadth and depth of insight. The format – combining

seminar theatres with a tabletop exhibition area – was

deliberately accessible, encouraging attendees not only

to learn from speakers but also to engage with solution

providers and peers in a more relaxed and interactive

setting than a traditional trade show.

The seminar programme packed a lot into the day, without

ever feeling overwhelming. One of the early sessions took a

clear, honest look at warehouse automation, with industry

experts talking openly about what’s working, what isn’t, and

why. Robotics and AGVs were high on the agenda, with real

case studies explaining why some businesses still struggle

to get automation off the ground, while others are already

seeing strong returns from their investment.

Digital innovation was another major talking point

throughout the programme. Sessions exploring tools like

digital twins – virtual models that help operators plan, test

and optimise warehouse layouts – and the growing role of AI

cut through the buzzwords to focus on practical use. Rather

than over-selling the technology, speakers were refreshingly

realistic about what can be implemented now, and where

businesses should be cautious, a balance that resonated

strongly with delegates.

One of the standout sessions of the day brought a more

personal perspective to the stage. From Warehouse to

Boardroom: Women Navigating Logistics showcased voices

from across the career spectrum, from students and earlycareer

professionals to experienced leaders. The discussion

highlighted both the obstacles and opportunities within a sector

that’s still often seen as male-dominated, while reinforcing the

message that the future of warehousing depends just as

much on people and talent as it does on technology.

The most thought-provoking session of the day came from

a focus on warehouse safety. Hearing first-hand accounts

of serious incidents, including a forklift collision, brought

home the very real consequences of getting safety wrong.

While automation and innovation dominated much of

the conversation elsewhere, this session was a powerful

reminder that strong health and safety practices remain

fundamental to responsible warehouse operations –

and should never be treated as an afterthought.

Beyond the seminar halls, the exhibition area was buzzing

with companies showcasing solutions designed to tackle

the very issues raised in the sessions. From warehouse

management systems and automation suppliers to

logistics consultancies and property specialists, the show

floor reflected the breadth of innovation available to UK

operators. Visitors could also see the latest hardware

and software in action, ask detailed questions, and begin

conversations that might lead to future partnerships.

Importantly, the event also delivered on its networking

promise. With over seven hours of CPD-accredited content

and opportunities for informal debate over complimentary

coffee and lunch, delegates were able to connect with peers

from a variety of sectors. Whether by sharing practical

experiences or exploring strategic collaborations, these

interactions helped break down silos and foster a stronger

sense of community within the sector.

Feedback from sector professionals suggested that one of

the greatest strengths of Tomorrow’s Warehouse was its

practical orientation. Attendees consistently highlighted

the value of actionable insights – presented not as abstract

thought pieces, but as grounded approaches directly

relevant to their operations. This emphasis on real-world

problem-solving distinguished the event from larger, more

commercial exhibitions.

In a sector defined by continuous change, events like

Tomorrow’s Warehouse play a pivotal role in shaping

how professionals respond to emerging challenges. The

successful Manchester edition has set a high benchmark

for future gatherings, with organisers already planning the

next chapter of this annual conference series. For an industry

striving to balance operational efficiency with technological

progress, the event offered not just insights but a sense of

direction – a testament to the value of collaborative learning

in an increasingly complex landscape.

Economic tailor-made

pump motors for London

water supply

Menzel Great Britain has

completed its biggest project to

date, providing 10 seven-ton electric

motors to the UK water utility

company Thames Water, which

serves 16 million customers across

London and the Thames Valley.

This strategic motor replacement

is crucial to extend the lifespan

of a key water treatment plant

by 10 years and secure the water

supply to the Greater London area.

Menzel won the contract for its

economic, well-thought-out concept.

The high-lift pump station at the

Coppermills Water Treatment Works

had experienced repeated failures,

mainly due to the age of the existing

equipment. As Thames Water is

planning to build a new station in

about 10 years, the utility company

put out a tender for an economic

drive solution to ensure reliable

operation of the existing pumps in

the interim. Other OEMs suggested

costly variable-frequency drives

New accessories make the AZM150 solenoid interlock even more versatile

The slim-line solenoid interlock AZM150 from

Schmersal now offers an even wider range of

applications thanks to new accessories and, as a

complete system, it is also a very cost-effective

safety solution.

One new accessory is the rear-mounted push

button, which can be used for emergency release

or emergency unlocking. Emergency release makes

it possible to leave the area of danger from the

inside if a guard door has been closed inadvertently.

Emergency unlocking enables the guard door to be

opened from the outside. The push button is available

in two different versions: the 45mm version for use

with door pillar thicknesses of 40mm, for example,

where the MP-AZM150-1 mounting plate can be used

for mounting, and the 170mm version for use with

door pillar thicknesses up to 170mm.

Another new accessory for the AZM150 is the Bowden

cable release with an overall length of 6 metres,

which enables remote unlocking in an inaccessible

interlock installation situation. This provides a

safeguard in particular hazardous situations. Should

an operator inadvertently become locked inside a

system, a Bowden cable can be used as an emergency

release. When working outside the danger zone, the

Bowden cable serves as an emergency release.

Rotating actuator head adds to versatility

An advantage of the AZM150 interlock is the rotating

actuator head, which is locked by simply putting the

cover in place instead of

a screw connection. The

360°-rotating actuator

head, with its two actuator

entrances, enables

different mounting

positions and approach

options. This feature also

decisively contributes

to the versatility of the

AZM150, which boasts

a holding force (FZh) of

1,500N.

Electromechanical

switch with high coding

The AZM150 is an

electromechanical

solenoid interlock with

a ‘high’ coding level

and therefore offers

excellent protection

against tampering. The

advantage for the user: with high coding, fewer

additional measures against tampering are required

in accordance with ISO 14119, such as mounting out

of reach or in a concealed position.

Cost-effective all-in-one system for smaller machines

With the new accessories, the series is now a

complete system that covers a wide range of

applications up to PL d/Cat3 and is also a very

cost-effective solution. In line with the motto

‘less is often more,’ the AZM150 series is ideal

for smaller machines and systems or for costsensitive

applications where a low performance

level is required. At the same time, the compact

electromechanical solenoid interlock precisely fulfils

the required safety level – at a moderate price.

Cleaning Update

Kärcher spotlights 90

years with nine community

cleaning projects

ärcher, global leader in

Kcleaning technology, is

marking its 90th anniversary

with a nationwide community

initiative to professionally

clean at least nine locations

across the UK.

Behind-the-mirror dispensers

These ‘give back’ projects

reflect Kärcher’s core values

of giving back to local

communities and aiming to

improve local spaces for all to

enjoy – embodying Kärcher’s

ethos of making a difference.

The exciting initiative sits as

part of a global programme, whereby Kärcher

will be delivering an incredible 90 cleaning

projects across the globe. As a cleaning

provider that has always been focused on

making a difference and creating sustainable

places where people and businesses can

thrive, this give back project is indicative of

Kärcher’s ethos as a business.

Marking nine decades of innovation

and commitment to creating cleaner

environments, the nine cleans will see

Kärcher’s expert staff team up with local

volunteers in UK towns and cities like

Banbury and Bristol. Kärcher will be working

with longstanding charity partners and

organisations that reflect the company’s

commitment to its own local initiatives and

wider UK cleaning challenges.

Powered by limited edition black

anniversary versions of Kärcher’s iconic

machines, the community cleaning projects

include Priors Court, an autism education

facility close to Kärcher’s HQ, a beach clean

with plastic clean-up company Nurdle, a

partnership with Flora Beverley to brighten

up alleyways in Bristol with ‘Pollinator

Pathways,’ and supporting Dogs for Good,

a charity that trains assistance dogs for

people with disabilities.

UDLEY INDUSTRIES has launched a

Dseries of new ‘pull-down’ soap and

paper towel dispensers, which represent

the latest additions to its ‘Classic Behindthe-Mirror’

range.

The new units include a touch-free 2-litre

soap dispenser and large capacity paper

towel dispenser. They are designed to

operate from behind a mirror or panel and

are intended principally for incorporation

into bespoke cabinets.

The distinctive ‘pull down’ feature

of the new products supports easy

replenishment; the new units feature

lockable sliding cartridges. They drop

down below the bottom of the cabinet,

providing easy access to the soap and

paper towel containers. Once refilled, they

can be raised back and locked in place to

protect the consumables from tampering.

In this respect, they differ from many other

cabinet systems, which typically require

the front-facing mirror to be opened

outward like a door.

All the dispensers in the range are

designed to be easy to install. They require

an aperture to be cut into the cabinet’s

base; the dispenser is then inserted and

screwed into position. Detailed technical

data and installation guides are available.

Supported by a 10 year warranty, all the

products in the range have been designed

by our team and are manufactured at our

production facility in Lytham, Lancashire.

Specification details for the new Behindthe-Mirror

dispensers are available at
