Preneur World chats to acclaimed ballet director Carlos Acosta

ahead of his UK tours of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Don

Quixote and Acosta Danza’s Carmen this Spring

Your journey from Havana’s poorest district

P to the global stages is nothing short of

extraordinary. How did those early challenges

shape the discipline and resilience that you that still

guide you today?

Growing up, I had nothing. So I had to learn

C that I had to fight for anything that I wanted in

life and that wasn’t going to go easy. So I grew

up with a sense of independence knowing that my

family, or anybody, weren’t going to be there to rescue

me. When you grow up thinking that way, you don’t

see obstacles but just the means to overcome them.

So that’s how my brain has been trained from those

childhood days. I still carry that sense of discipline

today. When the body tells you that you’re in pain,

you still get up and do it.

You trained under some of Cuba’s most

P influential teachers. Which lessons from

Ramona de Saa remain central to your leadership

at Birmingham Royal Ballet?

At the Prix de Lausanne competition, I was very

C nervous that I wasn’t going to win a medal and

let the entire school in Cuba down. I felt the

weight of that on my shoulders and at the semifinal I

didn’t dance very well. I slipped and I thought that I

wasn’t going to make it to the finals. But when I did,

Ramona told me that I was already a winner, that this

wasn’t meant to be taken as a competition, but just as

a performance. That I should just perform for people,

smile, and have that joy that comes from us Cubans

- a Caribbean feeling. She said that whether I won or

not wasn’t important. This is something that we had

to constantly remind ourselves of - why we are doing

this in the first place. This comes in handy when you

put it in the context of what we perform, what is our

essence, which it is to perform instead of just looking

at it from the perspective of the technique or how high

you jump - the details that sometimes get in the way

of the performance itself. So I think it’s a valuable

message that I think we could all learn from.

You mentioned the Prix de Lausanne. Winning

P the gold medal at such a young age must have

been transformational. How did that moment

redefine your sense of possibility?

I was 16 years old. I was always a very shy

C young man, very insecure. I wasn’t particularly

popular with girls, but I knew that I had a talent

to perform. Nevertheless what happened in Lausanne

was confirmation that I could actually have a great

career and indeed a great life - for me and for my

family. There were 127 dancers competing for the

medal from more than 30 countries. I came to that

stage from my little barrio, alongside all my peers

from all over the world. Winning the competition told

me that I had what it takes to become a professional,

and that if I keep dreaming, I could even make it all

the way to the top. I remember vividly the amazing

feeling I had when I saw my picture in the Swiss

newspaper saying that I was the winner of the Grand

Prix. That feeling gave me the impulse to keep

dreaming.

Bringing the Royal Ballet to Havana in 2009

P was a landmark cultural moment. What did

it mean to welcome your colleagues to your

homeland?

It was one of the highlights in my career. I

C never thought it was ever going to be possible

because it’s not just the Royal Ballet, it’s an

entire Royal Ballet machine, it’s almost like an

empire in itself. There were maybe 200 people on

the tour, makeup department containers, costumes,

everything. And then we took a lot of ballet as well.

We took Manon which is a huge choreography with

very complicated rigging and lighting plots. We also

took Chroma which again has large sets on stage.

We had a gala including A Month in the Country,

and so many other pieces. This was all at a time in

Cuba before that massive exodus of recent years, so

there were a lot of artists there and musicians. To

share that with my parents and for them to see me

perform - it was just amazing. A documentary was

even made about it. I’m so grateful to Monica Mason

and everyone who made it possible. It’s one of those

highlights of my career that I thought would never be

possible.

As Birmingham Royal Ballet prepares to tour

P your vibrant production of Don Quixote in 2026

what emotional notes and artistic intentions do

you most hope audiences take away?

The blend of the past and the present. I think

C in this production there are those two voices

coexisting, together. So when you look at Don

Quixote you know that you are in the presence of a

19th century classic but in the second act you have

the projections which are new elements that we use.

I was also very keen for people to talk on stage in

certain passages, approaching it from the perspective

that these are not dancers, but rather people who

communicate with dance but who can communicate

with words as well. For this production, I also gave

the role of Cupid or Amor to a male dancer instead

of a female dancer. These fresh elements tell the

audience they are witnessing a classic through the

PRENEUR WORLD 5

lens of today and obviously it is very colourful. I

would like the audience to be really transported

into this wonderful world and just enjoy it.

Don Quixote is a kind of a satire. It’s funny.

Nobody dies or anything like that. There’s a lot

of slapstick moments. The relationship between

Sancho and Don Quixote is very funny. And

Lorenzo and the Gamash are very colourful and

flamboyant. It is a great piece that puts a smile

on your face and that’s the most important thing

for me. That’s what ballet should do.

Your new production of Carmen has a

P stripped back setting and powerful visual

projections. What inspired this reimagining

and what does the story mean to you personally?

Carmen is one of the most popular

C tragedies and the music is just one of

the greatest scores ever but it is a tricky

ballet because there have been so many

fantastic takes on it - like the Roland Petit one

in the Forties, the one Mats Ek did where he

reinvented it all and obviously the Car Man by

Matthew Bourne. I love that show. So you say

to yourself: What can I do? How can I create a

Carmen that doesn’t quite look like the others?

My production is based on the Shchedrin score

of the Carmen Suite but there are also a few

pieces from Bizet in it as well. I did this kind of

amalgamation between the two and then I came

up with my own interpretation. I stripped back a

lot of the characters like Micaela and others from

the novel and the opera. I then concentrated on

the triangle of love, deceit and betrayal between

José, Carmen and Escamillo. I stripped it back to

its bare essence and did something conceptually

driven and atemporal. It’s not set in a specific

time. It’s just out there. I also have a Destiny

character which is Carmen’s destiny in the shape

of a bull, following in the footsteps of Alberto

Alonso’s Carmen, but his Destiny role was a

female. I put my own stamp on this by having

a man with horns as Carmen’s destiny, the

destiny of everybody - almost like the master of

ceremonies.

You have long championed young Cuban

P talent. How is the Acosta Danza Academy

evolving your vision for accessible worldclass

training?

The Acosta Danza Academy is there to

C form the Acosta Danza dancer. It requires

three elements: a very strong contemporary

dance background, the classical and the Cuban

folk element. We train in that direction and

these three elements are equally important

and the repertoire for this company is with

those three elements in fusion. If you see the

Nutcracker in Havana they’re doing everything

- contemporary and classical on point work but

then they break into a conga in the middle of the

Quixote. Photo © Johan Persson

whole party scene. While other dancers perhaps

excel at classical and contemporary, the Cuban

folk element is very specific. So you have a wellprepared

dancer that can seamlessly blend in and

absorb all kinds of movement.

P

As a leader, how do you balance preserving

classical traditions with expanding repertoire

to appeal to a new, more diverse audience?

We already have a season that in Birmingham

C that is is pretty much set. So we know that

the Nutcracker comes every year. So there’s

a major classic happening all the time. And then

there is the spring show which is one of the big

opportunities for earning. So you need to get a

popular title there. So normally the spring show is

either Romeo and Juliet or Cinderella one of those

classic heritage ballets. Don Quixote obviously,

you know, it’s going to come back on that slot and

hopefully, it will do what it’s supposed to. Part

of the plan is to expand the repertoire to turn all

the ballets into potentially great earners. Every so

often you have to come up with something that

raises eyebrows, like Black Sabbath: The Ballet

which was a fantastic hit. We have this wonderful

repertoire that we inherit - Swan Lake, Sleeping

Beauty, all of that - and we need to preserve that.

But every so often you need to go and fish for new

audiences.

P

What qualities do you most look for when

nurturing the next generation of dancers and

choreographers?

Musicality, personality, sensitivity, humour,

C versatility, being able to change, to adapt.

You need to be intelligent. You need to be

able to have artistic opinions and criteria. As

an interpreter it’s very important to have tools

for your exposition, whether from your own

experience or having been exposed to other works

and experiences. You have your own internal

debates about what works or not, or what is

lacking. That’s how you shape your own way as

a choreographer, as an artist or as an interpreter.

I think it’s very important to be an observer. You

could be learning just sitting down and watching,

to see how everybody interacts with the coach and

the choreographer. If you are 20 years old and you

listen and see and analyze, by the time you are

50, you might end up being a director like myself.

When I was 20, what did I know about directing?

What did I know about what I’m going to be like

when I’m 50? But if you are an observer, you learn

a lot. You have all these tools and then when that

knock at the door comes, you have this world of

experiences and it all comes out of nowhere and

you didn’t even know that some of them came

from when you were 20 and you were sitting down

looking at somebody else work. This is how I

think it happens most of the time. I think it’s very

important to observe and to internally have your

own internal debates of what you see and hear.

If you could host a dinner party with any

P three guests, dead or alive, who would you

choose and what would you hope to learn

from them?

Charlie Chaplin, Michael Jordan and

C Muhammad Ali. Chaplin was a genius but

he was also a highly intellectual person.

Chaplin’s poetry can lift you up and movies like

The Great Dictator contain so many wonderful

messages about humanity. Michael Jordan is

just the epitome of resilience and determination.

Muhammad Ali defied the entire government for

what he believed and he was stripped away of his

dignity when he refused to go to Vietnam. All his

titles had been taken away from him, but he still

remained with his own conviction and then time

put him in his place. When you look back, you

realise we were in the presence of greatness.

With such a rich international career, what

P continues to motivate and excite you as

you shape the future of Birmingham Royal

Ballet?

Doing things for the first time, dreaming

C big, dreaming the impossible, thinking

out of the box. Without these things I can

no longer function properly. And sometimes,

being a director is hard but I’m always going to

be enthusiastic. Even if I’m let down, I bounce

back. I do something. I have my mind occupied

by something else and then I go back to being the

idealist that I am. I think this is important for a

leader. To look positively towards the future and

what it could be. To have the right team behind

you to take care of the now and the functionality

of it. You have to be in the mindset of what it

could be all the time and drive everybody along. I

think that’s essential.

The Power of Journaling for

Mental Wellbeing

Jess Pritchard

Entrepreneur & Founder of MIRRA Journal Club

If you’ve never journaled before

you might think of it as being a

little romantic, perhaps silly, and

something that you associate with

Bridget Jones. If you have, you

almost certainly get it.

Journalling changed my life and

has become an integral part of my

mental health upkeep, particularly

as an entrepreneur. I rave about

it daily and often get the same

questions — but what do I write?

And why?

WHY JOURNALING?

Journalling is known for its

self development qualities, as a

therapy tool and as a mindfulness

hack - it helps you reduce stress,

boost self-awareness, and improve

emotional resilience - all whilst

improving your relationship with

you. You’ve heard the saying tidy

home tidy mind? Well, your head

is also your home. Journalling

feels like tidying my bedroom so

I can sleep and wake with more

clarity and less mess.

We’ve all experienced feeling

overwhelmed, lost or just plain old

indecisiveness - I use journalling

across all of these. Sometimes

to help make huge decisions, but

often just to stay close to myself,

as an act of self care, and to

sustain a higher level of mental

peace.

I’ll never forget a few years

ago there was one decision I’d

been sitting on for months and

months. I’d talked it out with so

many friends, I’d cried about it

and imagined all scenarios. I just

couldn’t decide what to do. I was

on holiday and I took myself down

to the beach alone. I asked the

waiter if I could please borrow

a bit of paper and a pen. I braindumped

all my thoughts without

any censoring. No distractions,

no one else’s input, no phone, and

most importantly knowing that no

one would ever read it.

Turns out I knew exactly what

to do. This huge thing I’d been

weighing up for months suddenly

felt less huge. There on that bit of

paper, was my answer. Ultimately

a quick journal helped me connect

to my gut.

STARTING YOUR JOURNALING

JOURNEY

All you need is paper / a note pad,

pen and a quiet moment.

You don’t need to have a fancy

journal book (although it can be),

often a scrap of paper that you’ll

later throw out is perfect.

Some people practise this a few

times a week, some do it every

day religiously, and for many

journalling is just a great tool to

reach for when you feel you need

it. There is no right or wrong.

WRITING YOUR FIRST

JOURNAL ENTRY

I start with a brain dump. This

is the most important part of

my journalling and sometimes I

only do this bit. The brain dump

is essentially a form of flowstate

writing, scribbling down

your stream of consciousness

as it comes. It doesn’t need to

make sense, doesn’t need to be

something you read back.

My handwriting is usually a bit

wild here and I’m writing with

minimal pauses - literally thinking

out loud (onto the page). If you

get stuck, start with how you’re

feeling generally, you’ll always

end up bringing yourself to the

topic you need. The aim here is to

take your thoughts from feeling

spirally and spaghetti-like, to

clearer lines. Think of it as sorting

out your mental wardrobe and

re-folding your clothes, maybe

throwing out some bits that no

longer fit or suit you.

Here, I really encourage you to

write with the mindset that this

will never be read by anyone. Your

journal should be your safe space,

not something you sensor or share

with anyone.

USING JOURNAL PROMPTS

I then go on to use some journal

prompts. Choose a few that

resonate and answer honestly,

again - with the idea that it will

never be read. Here are a few of

my go-to’s:

What is something that’s

disturbing my peace right now and

how would the best version of me

handle this? Can I align more with

this version of me than I am? If I

can’t control it, could I let it go?

How do I feel about myself today,

at this very moment?

Am I looking after myself with

the same level of care I would

give someone I’m responsible for?

What can I add to my life right

now to better my self care?

When do I feel my happiest self?

Can I do more of this?

What does my perfect week/

month/year look like? How can I

reasonably live closer to this?

When and how do I feel the most

loved? Do my closest people

make me feel this way? Could I

explain the first answer to them

more to help them love me in my

language?

10 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

What are my fears right now?

What do I need to say no to right

now or get done and tick off that

would really improve my general

peace? Make a realistic schedule

prioritising these things.

AFFIRMATIONS

I then finish with affirmations.

Affirmations are essentially

getting your thoughts on your side

— it’s the practice of self belief

and self-confidence. The idea that

if you say it enough to yourself,

it has the ability to be true. These

daily affirmations help create an

abundant, grounded and confident

mindset, so that ultimately, you

begin to embody the words you

write and truly believe them for

yourself. Choose affirmations that

are what you need to hear that day,

and how you want to show up,

such as:

I am enough.

I am someone good things happen

to.

I can make a real difference to

peoples day.

I am strong enough.

I have the power to make the right

choices for me.

I am worthy of ________.

I am happy to be me.

I deserve to take up my space.

Pick 1-3 and write them out again

and again next to each other 5-10

times. Write them down or even

better, say them out loud.

NOW IT’S OVER TO YOU

And that’s journaling! I encourage

you to journal a few times a week

and see how you go. Get to know

yourself deeply. Hold the same

space you do for your best mate

over a coffee. Lean in and really

listen. Let me know how you get

on.

You can find out more about

Silver Chic

Becky Sutherland, OSMO IKON Brand Ambassador and owner of

Odd Apple Salon, discusses the longevity of the grey hair trend

The silver stigma we once knew has become a

thing of past and is now a statement of confidence,

coolness, and a mark of a life well lived. Hurrah!

THE GREY HAIR TREND

Today you will find almost 3 million

Instagram hashtags for #greyhair, a further

500k for #greyhairdontcare, almost 150k for

#greyhairmovement, and a whopping 2.8 million

for #silverhair. Pinterest has reported an uptick in

searches for ‘going grey’ and there’s even a trending

‘grombre’ a word to describe growing out your

natural grey roots, a la Michelle Visage.

CELEBRITY SILVER STRANDS

Actress Salma Hayek and Supermodel Icon Kate

Moss have been celebrating their silver strands with

Salma calling her greys her ‘white hair of wisdom’.

Ru Paul’s Drag Race Michelle Visage has gone back

to her roots with the most striking shade of silver

against her signature rich midnight black. Grey is

even being embraced by Gen Z’s who are rapidly

updating their platinum blondes to cooler shades of

silver and grey.

HOW TO GO GREY GRACEFULLY

If you want to embrace your natural grey

immediately, a stylist can look to remove any

previous colour and then match a grey colour to their

client’s natural grey. I’d advise mixing a few different

shades of grey, so it’s looking more natural look and

a softer colour blend, which will allow the natural

root to grow out and achieve the end goal of a natural

grey. This part of the process will take the longest,

however, once the perfect grey base has been created,

each salon visit afterwards, will take less time.

Another option for clients wishing to go grey is to

simply grow it out. This is a far longer process but

you won’t be stripping colour. Growing colour out

can take a good 6 months, if not longer, so they’ll

need to be in the long haul with this option. They

may want to try a few hair-up styles, wear more hats,

or maybe even consider cutting their hair shorter, so

it’s not so long and arduous to grow it out.

HOW TO STYLE GREY HAIR

Natural grey hair is coarser as there is less pigment in

each strand and the hair follicle produces less sebum

too. Naturally grey hair may feel dry, brittle, and

unruly.

To overcome this, think about your care products

and opt for a high moisturising shampoo like

OSMO® Super Silver Shampoo (£18.95) &

Mask (£14.95) is sulphate free and is effective in

enhancing silver tones in grey hair or the OSMO®

Deep Moisture Shampoo (£10.95) Deep Moisture

Conditioner (£12.95) that uses the mega-moisturising

hero ingredient, Pataua Oil to leave hair feeling

silky, smooth, and manageable. Also, ensure you

recommend a weekly treatment, like the OSMO®

Intense Deep Repair Mask (from £4.80) once a week

to provide the hair with the extra salvation it needs.

When styling, we all know it’s important to protect

against heat, so always ensure recommending a heat

protector like the OSMO® Blowdry Potion (£9.85),

which has been designed to thicken and support hair,

contains Panthenol Pro-Vitamin B5 to moisturise,

dry damaged hair and smooth the cuticle. It really

helps give an effortless blow-dry experience, creating

lift and lustre, and reducing friction and breakages

caused by heat styling. Your client’s hair is left shiny

and static free too.

If you are not ready to go grey – but want to

experiment with the grey look, the OSMO® Colour

Revive Steel Grey (£18.95) is a great cheat product

to add colour, condition, and gloss to your hair. The

100% vegan Steel Grey OSMO® Colour Revive®

has a super-fast 3-minute processing time and can

be applied to pre-bleached blonde hair for a striking

grey result.

You can buy OSMO® products exclusively through

osmohair.co.uk and Amazon

In her exclusive Preneur World interview, Rebecca

Ferguson MBE reflects on life on & off stage and

campaigning for change in the music industry

ew

What have been your biggest

P obstacles when starting your music

career and performing on stage and

how did you overcome them?

I think obstacles would probably

R be my confidence on stage and

navigating the music industry

without prior understanding of how it

works from within.

I was 23 when I started out so naturally

at that age you’re not generally that

confident anyway. You’re navigating

extreme fame with 17 million people

watching you and then also navigating

growing into a woman.

I overcame those obstacles with time. I

think with time comes maturity and with

age comes wisdom.

P

If you had to describe your music in

three words, what would they be?

My music is constantly changing all

R the time. But I think it’s always been

about storytelling, heart and soul. I

think it’s a pretty constant factor within

my music. I think it’s just something

that’s always been there. And I hope it’s

always going to be there.

What emotional shifts guided you

P from Heaven to Heaven, Part. II,

and how do you feel closing the that

chapter of your career?

I was a 23 year old woman when I

R started writing Heaven, Part I. For

Heaven, Part. II, I was in my late

thirties and I’d just kind of been on a

whole different path really. I’d found my

voice and I’d become a lot stronger as a

person.

P

Which moments on stage still take

your breath away, even after fifteen

years making music?

There was a moment when people

R all lit up their phones and there were

just all these lovely twinkling lights.

Looking out and seeing that was amazing.

I think it’s just the moments when the

audience are really engaged. I had that in

Liverpool Philharmonic recently when

I’d done a Christmas gig there. The

engagement was really lovely.

P

How do you balance vulnerability

and strength when sharing the stories

behind your songs?

I think by realising that you don’t

R have to balance it actually. I

used to think that I’d have to be

really vulnerable or like a certain way.

And then, you know, I think the trick

is realising that you just have to be

authentic.

Your advocacy has transformed

P music industry conversations.

What positive changes give you the

greatest hope right now?

I think, you know, there were a few

R initiatives where record labels were

starting to offer suicide therapy to

older artists and workers. I think that’s

pretty cool because that’s so expensive for

that therapy. So to offer that was great.

I think there was also just a shift in the

way people were viewing these issues.

Speaking out about it has forced the issue

and that has changed naturally because

now it’s not cool to mistreat people. It’s

like it’s really not in to do the things that

people were doing.

And so I think that’s good. The minute

the conversation’s getting spoken

about, then that’s great. Plus, there is

a regulatory body being set up. Like

anything, it takes time and there’s a lot of

work to do. But the fact that initiative is

there is good.

Is there an issue within the music

P industry or wider society that you

would most like to see evolve in the

future?

I don’t think there’s any one thing

R that I’d pick for the future that I’d be

like, “Oh, I’d like to see this change.”

I think that especially when it comes to

mental health, that conversation is getting

much bigger and much more visible and

honest. And I just think that’s incredible.

P

How do you sustain your energy for

campaigning while maintaining your

creative flow?

PRENEUR WORLD 15

To be honest, I don’t. I don’t always get the

R balance right. If I’m interested in something,

I will completely hyper-focus on it and it will

take up my entire day, week, month. When I’m

interested in something, I am 100% focused on it.

So when it came to campaigning, I was completely

focused on that and so I probably wasn’t as focused

on music or other things. Everyone says you’ve got

to maintain a work-life balance but the truth is, I

don’t think I do that very well. I’ve come to learn

that you can’t be perfect and you do have to embrace

your strengths and your weaknesses, accepting

yourself fully as who you are.

P

In what ways has receiving an MBE for

services to the music industry influenced your

sense of purpose?

I think it’s just nice to have that external

R validation. Although it shouldn’t matter, it does.

It gives you that assurance that you’re on the

right path and that you’re doing the right things and

your efforts are noted.

Campaigning isn’t fun and it’s very isolating. It can

be really hard to be a campaigner. At the beginning,

it’s often not very cool and you can be shunned. I

was very much shunned at the beginning when I

started to campaign. People don’t want to be seen

talking to you or being near you because you’re

the one that’s going against the grain. To be a

campaigner and to try and force change in the world

is really, really hard. So to get those little moments

where you get awards or recognition just makes it a

bit more worth it that you’re on the right path.

What similarities do you see between being a

P mother and a successful artist? What shared

skills, traits and experiences do you feel help

both those sides of your life?

Being a mother is about being loving and

R nurturing. I suppose I try to do that within my

music. I kind of mother the music and put my

heart and soul into it. I hope that the people listening

to it feel that care and that love that I put into the

music.

P

What would you like to say to your younger

self?

I think I’d say: “I love you. You’re going to be

R OK. You’re going to achieve all your wildest

dreams. You’re going to grow into a pretty

awesome woman. What you’ve endured will make

you a much stronger person. You’ll have more

empathy and be able to use your voice to tell other

people’s stories. You’ll be able to use the power that

you found from having a mental illness to make

your life amazing.”

P

Which three famous people, past or present,

would you most love to invite to dinner, and

why?

Marilyn Monroe - because she has a very similar

R voice to me and she basically transformed that

experience into becoming a star and I found

that out quite late. You know, her mum being very

unwell and Marilyn did not really having a very

stable upbringing, to then turn that into being a star.

I found her story so interesting.

Clarke Gable - who played Rhett Butler in Gone

With The Wind. I just think everything about him

in that film is just so charming, so old school. I’ve

also heard amazing stories about how he stood up for

black rights at a time when it really wasn’t accepted.

He was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, but

he would basically say to clubs and restaurants, if

you don’t let her come in, then I’m not going to be

there. And so he is famous for being in Gone With

The Wind, one of the most famous films ever, but

actually the work that he did outside of film was

extraordinary.

And then lastly, I think Michael Jackson would

always be a cool person to sit around the table with

from a musical artist’s point of view.

P

R

What five things could you simply not live

without when navigating life on and off the

stage?

Five things. It’s a hard one. My husband. My

children. I do like a glass of wine, if I’m being

honest. My friends and I like a cup of tea.

Rise Without

Compromise: The

Discipline Behind

Sustainable Success

I’ve never believed that success

belongs only to the naturally

gifted. In my experience - from

the farm in West Wales where I

grew up to the boardrooms I sit

in today - success comes from

something much simpler: grit,

consistency, and the willingness

to look honestly at your whole life,

not just the part people can see.

High performers often convince

themselves they can power

through anything. For a while,

that works - until it doesn’t. When

you push hard in one area but

neglect the foundations that hold

you together, it catches up with

you. You can only rise sustainably

when every part of your life is

supporting the direction you want

to go.

This is where I often share a

simple equation with leaders:

Success = Potential – Interference

Not interference from others -

interference from within. The

small stresses, the lack of sleep,

the unhappiness you push aside,

the relationships you stop tending

to, the habits that drain rather than

nourish. All of it chips away at

your potential.

The question I ask leaders is: Are

you truly meeting your potential -

or are you just coping?

Below are the principles that

can help you rise without

compromising your wellbeing or

the life you’re working so hard to

build.

1. GRIT: ALIGNING BETTER

NOT PUSHING HARDER

Grit is often misunderstood as

relentless effort, but real grit is

quieter. It’s the discipline to make

the choices you don’t want to

make, consistently. It’s the courage

to face the areas of your life that

need strengthening. Sometimes

the bravest thing you can do is

slow down, reflect and realign.

Ambition without alignment leads

to exhaustion. Ambition with

alignment leads to sustainable

growth.

2. STRENGTHEN THE

FOUNDATIONS: SLEEP, FOOD,

MOVEMENT AND CALM

Peak performance isn’t created

in the office - it’s created in the

margins of everyday life.

Sleep is where emotional stability

and good decision-making begin.

Food fuels clarity, mood and

energy more than we admit.

Movement resets the body and the

mind; it’s often the quickest route

back to calm.

Emotional regulation comes from

understanding your personal

energy: what lights you up, and

what drains you.

Your energy naturally follows

what you enjoy. The tasks that

feel effortless - the ones that come

from your strengths - are often

the ones you need to lean into

more. They build confidence,

momentum and resilience.

When you nurture the basics,

everything else rises with you.

3. CHOOSE YOUR CIRCLE

WISELY: WE BECOME WHO WE

SURROUND OURSELVES WITH

One of the biggest predictors of

long-term success is your inner

circle. Not the number of people

around you, but the quality.

Surround yourself with those who

are grounded, honest, generous

with their energy and serious

about their own growth. These

people steady you when the pace

intensifies and remind you who

you are when self-doubt creeps in.

Your connections either amplify

your potential or interfere with it.

Choose wisely.

4. NOTICE THE

INTERFERENCE: WHAT’S

REALLY GETTING IN YOUR

WAY?

When performance dips, we

often look at our workload. But

the real interference usually lies

elsewhere:

Are you unhappy outside of work?

Are you neglecting your health?

Are you carrying emotional stress

that you’ve never had space to

name?

20 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

Are you over-committed because

you struggle to say no?

Once you identify the interference,

you can work on it. You don’t need

to transform everything at once

- just commit to progressing one

thing that will support your whole

life, not just your career

5. MICRO-PROGRESS OVER

PERFECTION

High performers often wait for

the “right time” to reset. But

resilience is built through small

daily actions - micro-progress.

Five minutes of reflection. A

walk between meetings. Going

to bed half an hour earlier. One

supportive conversation. These

shifts compound.

You don’t build resilience in crisis;

you build it in calm, through the

choices nobody sees.

FINAL REFLECTION: RISING

WELL IS THE REAL WIN

We tend to celebrate the outward

markers of success — titles,

recognition, opportunities. But

the leaders who lead longest and

strongest are the ones who take

responsibility for their whole life.

Ask yourself honestly:

What would my potential look like

if I removed the interference?

Then make one change - one small

decision - that supports the life

you want, not the pressure you’re

tolerating.

Success isn’t about striving

harder. It’s about building the

resilience, habits and support that

allow you to rise without losing

yourself. That’s when we become

unstoppable.

Day Fever is a daytime clubbing movement led by

Vicky McClure that invites the over-30s to rediscover

connection, confidence, and carefree celebration

ew

PRENEUR

If you ever thought clubbing was just for

the under-25s stumbling home at 3am,

think again. Day Fever, the unstoppable

daytime disco dreamt up by actor Vicky

McClure, her husband Jonny Owen, and

pals including Jon McClure of Reverend

& The Makers, is flipping the nightlife

script, one sunlit dancefloor at a time.

Born from a WhatsApp chat and now

heading to 18 towns and cities in the UK

and Ireland in early 2026, Day Fever

brings affordable, joy-filled clubbing into

the daylight hours. “The first one sold out

in two seconds,” Vicky beams. “We did

Nottingham, then Sheffield, then Merthyr

and Cardiff and it just flew from there.”

It all started with a simple idea. “Jonny

just said, ‘Have you ever seen those

bars in town during the day? They’re

rammed!’” laughs Jon. “We were like,

come on then, let’s do it and it went nuts.”

Now, this feel-good phenomenon sees

people of all ages, literally from their

20s to their 70s, letting loose on packed

dancefloors. “We’ve had Jonny’s mum

sneak in a bottle of gin and stash it in

a bush outside in Cardiff,” Jon jokes.

“That’s the vibe! Bit of mischief, loads of

laughs, and not a bit of trouble.”

And it’s that warmth, spontaneity, and

inclusiveness that keeps people coming

back.

Vicky’s voice lifts when she talks about

the kind of people turning up to dance:

“It’s mothers and daughters, friends

reconnecting, people on chemo, people

grieving. These are your nurses, your

cleaners, your teachers. These are the

people keeping the world spinning and

now they’ve got somewhere to let go and

feel joy.”

One story that’s stayed with her is a

woman who had barely seen her friends

or family unless it was for a wedding or

a funeral. “Now she’s got a new frock

every month, and she’s out at Day Fever.

She goes shopping Friday night, gets her

hair done, and makes a proper event of it.

That’s magic, isn’t it?”

Inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword here, it’s

baked into the experience. “We’ve had

people in wheelchairs come up on stage,

and the crowd goes wild. It’s electric. We

want it to be accessible to everyone,” says

Vicky, visibly moved. “It makes your

hairs stand on end.”

While you might catch a familiar face

on the decks, Jonny, Vicky, or even Jon’s

wife Laura, most Day Fever events are

led by local DJs. “We’ve been really

selective,” Vicky explains. “They know

their crowd; they know what their people

want to hear. And they’re smashing it.”

And yes, music is taken very seriously.

“There’s a loose structure,” Jon explains.

“Bit of Northern Soul to kick off, disco,

80s bangers, 90s dance, a singalong,

maybe some indie...but we always have

Whitney. If Vicky’s there, it’s the law.”

Vicky grins, “Hits across the generations,

that’s the key. We’ve done themed nights,

even Christmas clubs. And we’ll ask, ‘Do

you want more Christmas songs?’ and

they’re like ‘nah, just give us the hits!’”

She laughs. “You just get a feel for it.”

Regional pride plays a part too.

“Manchester goes mad for Oasis,

Nottingham’s got its favourites, and we

make sure to tap into that local energy,”

says Vicky. “It’s about community, about

people being together.”

With so many entertainment options

pricing people out, Day Fever deliberately

keeps things cheap. Vicky says. “We’ve

always wanted it to be affordable. A night

out can be £100 easy. We didn’t want this

to be that.”

Jon adds, “Jonny said from day one it’s

for ordinary people. Families, people with

kids. We’re not here to rip people off.”

Venues love it too. “We shut up shop at

8pm,” Vicky explains, “they do a quick

turnaround and run their usual night from

10. They’re making great takings and

reaching a new crowd. It’s been a game

changer for loads of clubs.”

If Day Fever feels like a family party,

that’s because... it kind of is. “Jonny and

I are married, Jon’s wife DJs, his brother

Chris and childhood friend Jamie are

WORLD 23

involved. Even Jonny’s daughter Katie’s behind the

decks,” Vicky laughs. “It’s one big gang, and when

people come through the doors, they’re part of it

too.”

It’s not uncommon to see Vicky herself dancing

on stage with partygoers, selfies flying and smiles

everywhere. “When people realise we’re just there

to have fun too, that we’re not up on a pedestal,

they really get into it,” she says. “And I mean,

come on, when do you get to go clubbing with your

mum?!”

With festivals like Splendour and Reverend & The

Makers’ 20th anniversary show in Sheffield this

summer, things are scaling up—but slowly. “We’ve

had offers to take it abroad, but we’re being really

careful,” Vicky says. “It’s only 18 months old, it

feels like a decade, but we want to make sure we

look after what we’ve built.”

They’ve even announced their own Day Fever

festival at Nottingham’s Arboretum on the 23rd

August. “We’ve got loads of ideas,” she teases.

“But for now, we’re just enjoying this moment. It’s

simple, and it works.”

Even with their busy schedules, Vicky

filming Trigger Point, Jon touring Australia, both

say they miss it when they’re away. “Sounds a bit

daft,” Jon chuckles, “but Day Fever cheers me up.

You leave feeling lighter.”

And that’s the magic, really. Day Fever isn’t just a

disco, it’s a dose of pure happiness.

Energy is

not always about

pushing harder but

about creating the

right conditions

for your body to

thrive

Foundational Principles

for Women’s Health and

Energy Levels

Nicole Askwith Williams, a leading

women’s health educator and coach,

discusses how hormones, nutrition,

and recovery impact productivity and

wellbeing year-round.

For many women, their energy

can feel like a rollercoaster with

little predictability. Between

work, family, and the demands of

daily life, maintaining consistent

focus and productivity can be

challenging. But, the truth is,

energy isn’t just about how

much sleep we get vs how many

coffees we drink. It can be deeply

connected to our hormones,

nutrition, and recovery practices.

By understanding and supporting

these foundations, women can

create sustainable energy all year

round.

HORMONES AND ENERGY

Hormones are like chemical

messengers running through

our bodies. They influence

everything from mood and

concentration to stamina and

sleep. Fluctuations across our

menstrual cycle, as well as

other hormonal transitions

like perimenopause, can affect

energy levels in really noticeable

ways. Rises in oestrogen around

ovulation can enhance energy

and motivation with its links to

our neurotransmitter dopamine,

while lower levels of oestrogen

at the beginning of a cycle can

contribute to fatigue. This is

almost flipped on its head during

the menopausal transition as

all 3 sex hormones (oestrogen,

progesterone and testosterone) are

depleting and can have incredibly

varied fluctuations, which is why

women can feel so different day

to day.

Some research shows that large

proportions of women do report

energy fluctuations linked

to their cycle. For women in

demanding careers, this can mean

certain days naturally feeling

more productive, while others

feel more draining.

Practical tip: You should be

tracking your energy alongside

your cycle. Noticing when you

feel naturally more energised

(and when you don’t) can help

you plan your diary with more

important and demanding

meetings at certain points, or

needing to plan recovery time

more effectively.

NUTRITION THAT SUSTAINS

The food we eat directly impacts

our blood sugar balance that in

turn does impact our energy,

mood, and overall productivity.

And as women have completely

different hormonal fluctuations

to men, it’s important we are

fuelling our bodies for this, not

working against it.

A lot of women rely on quickfix

snacks and several caffeine

boosts throughout the day, but

this does nothing for our hormone

regulation and it leads to crashes.

Instead, we need to flip the

narrative and make sure that we

are providing our bodies with

consistent energy. This comes

from nutrient dense meals that

combine protein, fibre, healthy

fats and of course carbohydrates.

Having stable blood sugar

26 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

throughout the day has been

shown to improve focus and

reduce what I like to call the

‘Lunch Slump’. So many women

experience afternoon fatigue

when working because they aren’t

having balanced meals to enable

them to perform to the best of their

ability, let alone any added extras

like the gym or other activities.

For business women, that could

really be the difference between

nailing a client presentation or

losing out on the deal.

Practical tip: Please start the day

with breakfast. Too many busy

women skip breakfast and this

makes things 100 times worse.

Something balanced that has

carbs, fats and protein such as

eggs, yoghurt and nuts, some oats

or a smoothie with protein powder.

RECOVERY AND REST

With everyone always being so

busy, recovery is probably the

most overlooked pillar of health.

When we talk about recovery it

isn’t just sleep (although quality

sleep is essential); it’s also about

how we manage stress and allow

our bodies time to reset. When we

are constantly in our sympathetic

nervous system (flight or flight)

rather than our parasympathetic

nervous system (rest and digest),

our sleep is interrupted, our gut

health and digestion doesn’t work

properly, and that overall really

impacts our energy.

The World Health Organization

has identified ‘burnout as an

occupational phenomenon’.

For women who are balancing

demanding careers with other

responsibilities at home, recovery

really needs to be taken seriously,

it’s not a luxury. It needs to

be looked at as a more of a

performance strategy.

Practical tip: Our circadian rhythm

(what helps us sleep and wake

up) loves similarity and routine.

Creating a routine that you can

stick to when getting ready for

bed can help your mind and body

chill out. Really small actions like

dimming your lights, giving your

brain a break from devices, having

a warm bath or shower, and only

using your bedroom for sleep (no

screens!) makes sleep deeper and

more restorative.

FINAL THOUGHT

Energy is not always about

pushing harder but about creating

the right conditions for your

body to thrive. As women, by

supporting our hormones, fuelling

with balanced nutrition, and

actually prioritising recovery, we

can build sustainable productivity

and wellbeing throughout the

year. If you are an ambitious

woman, maybe feeling like you’re

balancing multiple demands,

these foundations shouldn’t be

an optional extra, you should be

looking at them as essential for

your performance and long-term

health.

WHY LANGUAGE LEARNING

STILL MATTERS

Learning a new language is

rarely about vocabulary alone.

It is about confidence, cultural

fluency and the quiet satisfaction

of being understood. YouGov

research shows that almost nine

in ten Brits believe speaking a

foreign language is useful, yet

only one in five can do so with

any confidence. Spanish leads the

way as the most popular choice,

followed closely by French, but

traditional tuition often proves

costly, time-consuming and

difficult to sustain. Rosetta Stone

offers a compelling alternative

that feels both modern and

reassuringly credible.

ROOTED IN IMMERSION

Founded in 1992, Rosetta Stone

was built on a deceptively simple

idea - that we learn best through

immersion, just as we did with our

first language. Its founder, Allen

Stoltzfus, set out to move beyond

rote memorisation and translation

after his own frustrations with

learning Russian. Instead, Rosetta

Stone teaches through images,

sound and context, encouraging

learners to think in their new

language rather than translate

back into English. More than 30

years on, this philosophy remains

at the heart of the app.

GLOBAL PLATFORM

Today, Rosetta Stone supports

over 25 languages, from global

staples such as Spanish, French,

German, Arabic and Mandarin,

to heritage and endangered

languages including Irish, Latin

and Ojibwe. For British learners

in particular, Spanish continues

to dominate, with one in four UK

users choosing it and a remarkable

210 percent increase in Spanish

learners between 2023 and 2024.

This momentum speaks to both

cultural appetite and trust in the

platform.

BUILDING REAL FLUENCY

Rosetta Stone’s Dynamic

the Mom’s Choice Award for Best

Family-Friendly Product, and

the EdTech Breakthrough Award

Rosetta Stone truly stands apart.

One Language Lifetime Access is

priced at £299, while All Languages

Lifetime Access, covering all 25

both empowering and refreshingly

generous.

THE PRENEUR WORLD REVIEW

We reviewed the Rosetta Stone app

to learn Spanish and it felt less like

an app subscription and more like

a quiet lifestyle upgrade. From the

outset, the immersion-led approach

set the tone as we were gently

nudged to think, listen and respond

in Spanish from day one. The short,

focused sessions felt achievable

rather than demanding and the

speech recognition technology

proved particularly impressive,

encouraging confident pronunciation

while subtly correcting us before

bad habits could take root. Progress

felt organic, cumulative and deeply

clean, and make you feel good.

Find out more at thehumble.co

By starting early,

parents can prevent

most cavities and set

their children up for

a lifetime of healthy

smiles and good habits

Good oral health starts early.

The habits your child develops

in their early years set the stage

for their dental health as an

adult. But helping children build

these habits can be challenging.

especially since childhood tooth

decay is extremely common.

The good news is that with some

understanding of the causes,

and by following expert advice,

parents can prevent many

problems and create routines that

stick.

WHY CHILDHOOD TOOTH

DECAY IS SO COMMON

Cavities are the most widespread

chronic disease among children.

Several factors explain why young

teeth are so vulnerable:

Sugary foods and drinks: Frequent

snacks like candies, juices, and

sweetened cereals feed bacteria

in the mouth. These bacteria turn

sugar into acid, which erodes

tooth enamel.

Baby bottle habits: Toddlers who

are put to bed with bottles of milk

or juice, or who sip sugary drinks

for long periods, are at risk for

“baby bottle tooth decay.” This

often affects the upper front teeth.

Delayed oral care: Many parents

don’t realise that cleaning should

begin before the first tooth

erupts. Without daily cleaning,

plaque builds up quickly on baby

teeth, which are thinner and less

resistant than adult teeth.

Lack of fluoride: Fluoride helps

strengthen enamel, but children

who don’t get enough through

toothpaste or drinking water are

more prone to decay.

Socioeconomic barriers: Families

with limited access to dental care

or healthy food options often face

higher rates of untreated cavities.

In short, kids get cavities easily

because their teeth are exposed to

sugar often, and sometimes they

aren’t cleaned or protected with

fluoride as effectively as needed.

Dental experts stress that starting

early, and keeping things positive,

is key to forming lifelong habits.

Here are practical strategies for

parents:

1. BEGIN ORAL CARE IN

INFANCY

Wipe an infant’s gums with a soft

cloth before teeth appear. Start

brushing as soon as the first tooth

erupts. Schedule your child’s first

dental visit by age one.

2. MAKE BRUSHING FUN

Let kids choose colourful

toothbrushes or toothpaste

flavours, like those from The

Humble Co.

Play music, use a sand timer, or

try a brushing app to keep them

engaged for the full two minutes.

Turn it into a game, some parents

make brushing a game or tell

a story: for example, pretend

the toothbrush is a superhero

“fighting sugar bugs.” Such

creative approaches can engage

young kids in the habit.

3. OFFER PRAISE AND

REWARDS

Most parents would say that they

Positive reinforcement goes a long

way. Simple praise (“Your teeth

look so clean!”) motivates young

children.

Sticker charts or small weekly

rewards can help older toddlers

and preschoolers stay consistent.

The goal is to frame oral hygiene

30 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

as a fun and proud activity, not a

chore.

4. BRUSH AND FLOSS

TOGETHER

Young children learn by imitating

parents, therefore dentists often

encourage parents to brush their

teeth alongside their kids to model

good technique and consistency.

Make it a family routine after

breakfast and before bed.

Let your child “help” you brush

your teeth, then switch and help

them with theirs.

Seeing you floss and brush

regularly reinforces that these

habits are a lifelong part of daily

self-care.

5. SUPERVISE UNTIL THEY’RE

READY

Children don’t have the fine motor

skills to brush effectively on their

own until roughly age 6 or 7.

Experts advise parents to continue

helping children brush (or closely

watching and finishing up missed

spots) until at least that age.

For flossing, parents should do it

for the child until the child is old

enough to do it well (often around

age 10)

Make it a team effort – for

example, you might let your child

brush first, then you do a “parent’s

turn” to make sure every tooth is

clean.

By starting early, making brushing

and flossing enjoyable, and staying

involved, parents can prevent most

cavities and set their children up

for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Daily brushing with fluoride

toothpaste, regular flossing, and

routine dental visits are proven to

reduce cavities and build strong

oral hygiene habits.

Little Voices: A Parent’s

Guide to Nurturing

DR LIN DAY

Toddler Speech

The development of speech and

language is a continuous process

that begins in the first three years

of life and is intricately linked

to a child’s earliest experiences.

Conversations, turn-taking, songs,

nursery rhymes, action games,

stories, and picture books are all

crucial in language and speech

development during the early

years of life. From the perspective

of brain development, several

areas of the cerebral cortex

(the outer part of the brain) are

linked to speech and language

development.

BRAIN DEVELOPMENT IN

EARLY YEARS

The two main areas, however,

include Broca’s area (behind

the forehead), which is partly

responsible for speech production

and Wernicke’s area (near the

ears), which is associated with

the processing and understanding

of language. In the second year

of life, these areas mature,

and vocabulary becomes more

expressive. At this point, toddlers

may produce four or even fiveword

sentences; they may also

respond to simple instructions

such as “Sit down” and “Give me

your cup”.

In many cases, by the age of two,

toddlers can also name a variety

of objects, express their likes and

dislikes and make animal sounds

such as ‘moo’ and ‘baa’. Likewise,

you may notice that the word

“No” becomes a favourite word

for toddlers. They can also often

string words together to create

phrases such as ‘Mummy gone

to work’. Although some speech

may be unintelligible, toddlers

understand as many as 200 words.

By the end of the second year,

toddlers will be able to recognise

when something is wrong - for

example, calling a cat a dog. They

may point to objects using the

words ‘look’ and ‘see’, follow a

short story, and be able to name at

least six body parts. By this point,

they may also understand up to

three hundred or more words, be

able to say around one hundred

words, and combine them to make

short sentences.

In their third year, toddlers

will soak up new words at a

phenomenal rate and vocabulary

will become much more

expressive as words are learned

at a rate of ten or more a day. A

child of this age will also begin

to understand abstract concepts

such as ‘sooner’ and ‘later’ and

opposites such as ‘big’ and ‘small’.

They can also hold a conversation

and ask questions.

CONNECTING NURSERY

RHYMES WITH SPEECH

Singing or reading simple nursery

rhymes help children to develop

speech and language skills while

also being socially enriching.

Rhyming words such as ‘cat’ and

‘hat’ can also encourage children

to differentiate between similar

sounds and letters and to develop

phonemic awareness before they

go to school. Rhymes also help

children to identify words that

don’t rhyme, to predict the missing

word at the end of a phrase, to

make up strings of rhymes such

as ‘cat’, ‘hat’, ‘bat’ and ‘mat’ and

to retell stories without using a

book. To equip children with the

language and speech skills they

need when they go to school, it

is important for parents to sing

nursery rhymes from an early age.

Nursery rhymes have a simple,

predictable, rhythmic pattern that

help children to memorise speech

patterns. Twinkle, Twinkle for

example, has six notes within

the child’s pitch range C - A,

and a clear beginning, middle,

and end. The rhyme also starts

and ends in the same way and is

repeated, which enables the child

to anticipate each phrase of the

song and join in with the singing

and actions.

Rhymes with a simple, steady beat

and lots of repetitive language

such as Pat-a-Cake and Round

and Round the Garden are ideal

for babies, while more energetic

action songs with more varied

tones, beats, and rhythms such

as The Wheels on the Bus or If

You’re Happy and You Know It,

are ideal for older children because

they help them to recognise

differences in pitch, melody, and

repeated sound patterns as well

as increasing body awareness,

coordination, and control. When

a parent sings a nursery rhyme,

words and phrases slow down

making speech easier for the child

to hear and follow. The child

also builds up a vocabulary of

words long before the meaning is

understood.

Number rhymes such as Five

Little Speckled Frogs and Ten Fat

Sausages introduce children to

numbers, patterns, and sequences.

They also include repeating,

rhythmic patterns that make

learning to count fun. If the

rhythms and words are simple and

repetitive, children will enjoy the

feeling of mastery as they come to

learn them by heart, which raises

36 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

their self-esteem and sense of

belonging. Nursery rhymes can be

sung at any time of the day, but it

is important to bear in mind that

if a child is tired, thirsty, hungry

or feels emotionally insecure or

under pressure, they may not join

in.

Traditional rhyming songs such

as Wind the Bobbin Up and Head

and Shoulders have delighted

children for generations. This

is why they are included in the

Baby Sensory and Toddler Sense

programmes. Also included are

rhymes that involve puppets

such as Tommy Thumb, which

provide a wealth of learning and

development opportunities from

visual stimulation to imagination

and speech development. They

also encourage rich adult-child

interactions and the element

of surprise that children love.

Likewise, vocabulary can also be

increased through rhymes, action

songs, stories, and interaction with

soft toys and puppets.

DETECTING SPEECH DELAY

With increasing brain maturity,

toddlers will gradually develop the

skills that they will need in their

adult lives. Having said that, the

brain must be ready to move on

to the next stage of development.

Parents may worry that they

should be doing more to help their

toddlers with speech development,

but they can only hurry them

along so much. Every toddler is

unique and will develop speech

at his or her own pace. Talking

to toddlers and asking questions

can help them to listen and unlock

the meaning of words. However,

it is worth bearing in mind that

continual background noise from

a television or music speaker for

example, can interfere with the

ability to develop language.

It is important to recognise that

as toddlers grow up, they go

through different stages of brain

development, which also influence

the acquisition of physical and

mental skills, including language

and speech. Genetic inheritance,

prenatal conditions, premature

delivery, nutrition, environment,

experiences, attachment,

temperament, and other factors

may affect the development of

the brain. The first sign may be

a significant delay in reaching a

developmental milestone including

speech. If concerns arise,

assistance can be sought from a

qualified professional.

If there are growing concerns that

a child has a speech delay, parents

may also want to consider aspects

such as phoneme awareness -

which is intricately linked to the

ability to hear. If a child cannot

hear the sound ‘at’ in ‘cat’ they

will have difficulty in decoding

the word. This is why it is

important to check hearing and

to pay attention to ear infections,

especially when they keep

reoccurring. Speech and language

development depends on strategies

that aid communication as well as

treatment for hearing loss. If an

ear infection or hearing problem is

suspected, early intervention can

make a significant difference.

There are of course many other

reasons why speech development

might be delayed in toddlers. For

instance, if speech and language

opportunities are limited in the

early years, the brain may not

be stimulated, and the child may

struggle to read as a result. This is

why it is so important to talk, read

or sing nursery rhymes to children

from birth onwards.

NURTURING HAPPY AND

CONFIDENT TALKERS

Later on, skills such as reading

will depend on a child having

plenty of opportunities to hear

sounds and words in nursery

rhymes. If nursery rhymes are

introduced from an early age,

children will develop good

vocabularies, understand the

concept of rhyming, develop

phoneme awareness, and gain

listening skills and knowledge.

They will also be interested

in reading and other literacy

activities when they enter formal

schooling.

In summary, supporting toddler

speech and development is vital

as it lays the foundations for

effective communication and

learning. Parents play a crucial

role in nurturing this development

through engaging conversations,

rhyming, singing, reading together

and encouraging expressive play.

By recognising the milestones of

speech development and keeping

an eye out for any potential delays

early on, parents can support

their children to become happy,

confident talkers while enhancing

their social and emotional skills as

they grow.

Supporting Gifted and

Talented Children

Ryan Lockett, Headteacher of TLC LIVE

Online School, discusses how personalised

education unlocks every child’s potential

When your child is identified as gifted and talented,

it can feel exciting, but also a little daunting. Many

parents may discover that while their children pick

up ideas and concepts more quickly, they often have

complex emotional and learning needs too, and

are susceptible to burnout easily. Without the right

support, a gifted child might become disengaged,

lose motivation or even underachieve. However, with

the right strategies in place, they can flourish both

academically and personally.

HOW TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE A GIFTED AND

TALENTED CHILD

There are a few early signs that suggest a child

may fall into this category. These can include an

unusual curiosity about the world, the ability to think

laterally or uniquely about a topic, or an intense

focus on certain interests. Some children may

show remarkable achievement in one subject while

being typical in others which is completely normal.

Additionally, boredom in lessons can show that

they’re operating above and beyond the level being

taught. Keep an eye on what subjects their behaviour

is different in, often this can be mistaken for bad

behaviour when it’s simply disinterest at the level.

What’s important is not to assume ability in every

area. Even when a child excels in one subject, they

may need support or reassurance elsewhere. Ongoing

assessments can be very useful here, helping parents

and teachers track progress to ensure learning

remains challenging, as well as pick up on any areas

where extra support is needed. It is a delicate balance

though, and it’s important for parents to make sure

your child isn’t overwhelmed by how many tests you

do with them.

THE BENEFITS OF PERSONALISING YOUR

CHILD’S EDUCATION

Personalisation allows education to be shaped around

the unique pace, interests, and abilities of the child.

For gifted learners that might mean stretching their

knowledge through accelerated study, encouraging

deeper research, or giving them open-ended, realworld

problems to solve.

But personalisation isn’t just about academics. Gifted

children also need help developing social awareness

and emotional resilience. Balancing advanced

study with activities that encourage teamwork and

creativity can build confidence and prevent burnout.

Encouraging independent research or cross-curricular

projects can work well, alongside giving children a

say in how they approach their learning. Ownership

of the process helps sustain motivation and can turn a

natural curiosity into a lifelong love of learning.

HOW TO SOURCE THE RIGHT SUPPORT

Empathy is essential. Great teachers understand that

gifted children may face as many challenges with

42 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

RYAN LOCKETT

perfectionism, self-esteem, or social belonging as

they do with academic demand. The right teacher will

know how to stretch learning without overwhelming

the student and build a genuine rapport so the

child feels understood as an individual. If you’re

homeschooling through online school, you can make

sure the teachers are at the right level for your child.

While parents play a huge role in nurturing talent,

additional one-to-one support can be invaluable.

An experienced tutor has the flexibility to work

around the school curriculum and instead focus on

the specific areas where a child shows passion or

advanced skills.

EVERYDAY GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS

There are plenty of simple but effective ways to help

a gifted child thrive:

1. Encourage enrichment opportunities outside of

lessons such as clubs, competitions, museum visits, or

workshops.

2. Speak with teachers and tutors about your child’s

attainment to ascertain next steps for support outside

of the classroom.

3. Balance fast-paced academic work with creative or

physical activities such as music, art, or sport.

4. Talk positively about mistakes and challenges,

reminding your child that struggling with something

new is an important part of progress.

5. Support friendships with peers who share similar

interests, helping your child feel a sense of belonging.

6. Keep communication open with your child’s school

or tutor team so that everyone is working towards the

same goals.

HELPING YOUR CHILD THRIVE

Gifted and talented children need the same level

of empathy, planning, and care as any other child,

sometimes more given the complexity of their

learning. With the right mix of early identification,

personalised education, balanced support, and

inspiring teachers or tutors, their potential can be not

just reached but truly nurtured. When this happens,

gifted learners grow into confident young people who

feel both challenged and fulfilled.

How to Help Your Teen Navigate

Exam Years Without the Stress

Peter Bolam, a top A-level tutor with online tutoring platform

Superprof, shares advice on how to help your teenage children

study for their GCSEs or A-levels in the most effective way

For many, facing an exam year at any age can be an

overwhelming prospect. But putting in appropriate

study time away from the classroom, and being

realistic about the amount needed, often forms the

foundation of success.

If the student has done the subject before, they

basically know the parameters of what’s needed

already. But if they’re picking up something like

Media Studies, Business Studies, Psychology

or Sociology, these are all subjects that are less

commonly taught at GCSE, and it means the student

will have to give a lot more time to that subject at

A-level.

Parents should psychologically prepare the student

for effective time management. Parents need to help

them to understand that, whilst they maybe did eight

or nine GCSEs, they are actually going to work

harder for those three chosen subjects at A-level.

Eyes often light up around this time as students are

introduced to ‘free periods’. The reality is that these

are not free, they are actually study periods, and

parents can psychologically prepare their children

that it’s possible to get all your work out of the way

before coming home. That can lead to reduced stress

and better organisation.

1

PREPARING THE TOOLS

With education heading further and further

into the digital long grass, a wide-range of

tools may be needed throughout the academic year,

ranging from traditional stationary items to apps for

studying. Depending on your child’s age, they can

take the bulk of the responsibility for these, giving

them more autonomy over their studies as a result.

But if your child needs more support, it’s OK to step

in. For example, your child may have access to a

desk at home but have they personalised that space

to do their best work? Similarly, if school work is

completed via an online portal, is the child set up

with their log-in details before term time starts?

These are small advantages a parent can offer their

child.

2

BE PROACTIVE AND NOT REACTIVE

From an early age, parents must help the

student to understand that confronting issues

is the way forward rather than running away from

them. Therefore, if the signs are there for the child

not doing as well as they could do, the child and the

parents must engage with this challenge as early as

possible. Of course, one way of doing that is getting

teacher support in place sooner rather than later.

It is usually standard practice where detailed

feedback is coming very quickly back to parents

but, if it isn’t, parents have to get in contact with the

teachers and lecturers and push for those reports. The

grades don’t lie.

When we see dips, that’s where we need to put the

care and support packages in place. Tutoring would

absolutely be one of those; finding a good tutor that’s

going to work with that student to support their

learning in a one-on-one environment.

3

WELL-BEING AND ROUTINE

For good reason, student well-being is high

on the agenda right now. It can be an uphill

struggle to encourage a sensible sleep routine for

a teenager but it’s very important. This includes

going to bed at a regular time that’s monitored with

limited or no access to digital devices. Parents who

encourage or even enforce rules around mobile

phones being left downstairs and turned off before

going to bed are really contributing to positive wellbeing

for their child. If you are feeling particularly

ambitious, encouraging the child to read a book for

fun rather than doomscrolling on their phone could

make an even bigger impact.

Physical exercise is also crucial to positive wellbeing;

we’re thinking about walking, jogging, going

to the gym if appropriate. It doesn’t matter what the

physical activity is but build that exercise into your

family routine so that the young person doesn’t let it

fall by the wayside.

4

NO SIZE FITS ALL

I’ve been an A-level tutor for the best part of

thirty years and I see parents steering their

children towards a specific career path every single

year. Some parents have a pretty restrictive view as

to what a good career path looks like in the twentyfirst

century, often because it’s worked well for them

or well enough, and they believe their child should be

adopting this as well.

If the child’s not buying into it, this obviously can

46 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

cause quite significant difficulties for everyone.

Parents need to recognise the uniqueness of their

child and that one rigid approach isn’t necessarily the

best. This is easier said than done. Allowing the child

to express themselves as to why they feel a certain

career path may be beneficial, even if the parent

fundamentally disagrees., is also key. Allow that

expression to come out.

But once that’s happened, a parent’s role is to help

the child reflect on why they want to be choosing

a particular career path. Sometimes students don’t

really understand what’s involved or may only be

wanting to engage with a particular career because

they can’t think of anything else. Again, this is where

a parent can come in to help them reflect on all of

this and essentially be a good listener – a common

theme when supporting your child throughout an

exam year.

5

CARROT OR STICK?

Of course, the single most important

factor that shapes student success is their

motivation to study in an effective manner. Most

schools and colleges are now very good at showing

students what effective studying looks like, but many

students never try acting on the advice they are

given.

One way to encourage this is through focusing their

minds on the point of all this learning. If they can see

a purpose to learning then most students are more

focused and motivated than they would otherwise

be. Discussions about university, career pathways,

apprenticeships, internships and work experience can

help any student to see the point of studying for their

qualifications. Remember that the human brain is

not truly adult until around the mid 20’s. This means

that although your teen may sound and look like an

adult, their brain certainly is not. So, they need clear

guidance and support to structure their learning and

to help think about the future.

Preneur World talks exclusively to Sabrina Ghayour,

the Iranian, self-taught home cook turned chef and

author whose new book Persiana Easy is out now

ew

How did your early self-taught

P kitchen moments shape the intuitive,

flavour-driven approach that defines

your cooking today?

Being self-taught gives you the

S ability to be flexible, develop

a comfortable style and most

importantly develop confidence because

there was nobody standing over you

telling you how things should be done

or calling you out when you make

mistakes. Every step of the way is paved

with lessons that are worth learning and

allowing them to shape the kind of cook

you become.

When you first launched your supper

P clubs, what inner calling convinced

you that sharing Middle Eastern

food was your true path?

Redundancy! That inner calling

S was redundancy because when you

lose your job, you inevitably should

stick to what you know in order to create

work and that’s what ended up proving a

winning formula.

Which milestones along your

P culinary journey felt most

transformative in elevating you

from passionate home cook to bestselling

author and food consultant?

I’m a bit quirky and I’m not sure

S I look at life in milestones and

moments… I did what I had to do,

years of experience taught me lessons

and I am still very much a home-cook

because the entire culture of the East is

built around it, unlike European culture

and so it’s been pretty joyous to be

allowed to be myself and not have to

change and funnily enough, THAT is

exactly what my clients and customers

seem to have wanted and so it’s all

worked out rather well.

What message did you hope readers

P would feel when you released your

debut cookbook, Persiana, and how

has that intention evolved?

S

I didn’t really write the book with

any intentions other than to show

people that Persian and Middle

Eastern food is also just home cooking

and can be perfectly accessible and

delicious.

Your new cookbook, Persiana Easy,

P is a collection of inspiring recipes

carefully designed to be as easy as

possible. What inspired you to create the

book and what can fans of Persiana and

Persiana Everyday expect from this new

cookbook?

Delicious, simple and reliable recipes

S that work every time and won’t

force you to spend hours toiling in a

kitchen when you could just be enjoying

the fruits of your labour. I think my ethos

has changed greatly since become a wife

and mother and post-covid, I will take

every shortcut possible and make things

as simple and economical as possible,

because that’s what we all want at home

most of the time.

When developing recipes, how do

P you balance authenticity with the

adaptability modern cooks need for

everyday life?

I don’t think anyone who genuinely

S cooks at home thinks too much

about anything other than getting

a meal on the table. Any shortcuts are

naturally orchestrated because of my

experience with the recipe and repetition.

How do you decide which dishes

P deserve a place in a new book, and

what do you do with the ones that

don’t make the cut?

The lists always come together

S organically and I usually go with

the flow. Very rarely does a recipe

I’ve tested NOT make it into a book. If

you are struggling with recipe testing,

you are trying too hard and you’re

probably choosing a recipe that’s overly

complicated and won’t suit most people

anyway. That’s not my style at all, I can

see the end result at the time I come up

with an idea and I usually know exactly

what to put into it and how to make it.

P

What was it like meeting your

readers and fans on the Persiana

Easy book tour, and have any

PRENEUR WORLD 53

reactions or stories genuinely surprised or

inspired you?

Lovely as always! Having done

S Supperclubs and cookery classes around

the country for well over a decade, I’m

very much used to meeting lovely people and

I really, really love it. You learn a lot, you

laugh a lot and you connect with people who

love your recipes and to hear that is a really

precious element of my career.

How has your experience as a cookery

P teacher and food consultant deepened

your understanding of what people truly

seek from food today?

I’d actually say it’s my experience as a

S Chef and author that has shaped those

two things more and not vice versa

because with social media, feedback is

instantaneous and you learn a lot. However

cookery classes had taught me (early on)

where people’s fears lie and essentially

everyone has very similar fears when it comes

to food and ingredient prep so I now know

very comfortably to pre-empt those and make

sure they are addressed and given the care

and confidence required to overcome them.

With global flavours now firmly

P embraced in British kitchens, what shifts

in people’s attitudes have stood out most

to you?

Out of every country in the world, I

S would say England has long-embraced

the flavours of other nations. From

South-Asian to Chinese and Italian & Spanish

to Turkish and Greek... They love it all and

so it was easy to perhaps share a few new

flavours with them because for the most part,

the taste and palate for them already existed.

How do you think travel, both your own

P and that of your readers, influenced the

desire to recreate international dishes at

home?

Travel provides me with almost 75% of

S my inspiration, I’d say and so I imagine

that also makes people want to recreate

dishes from their travels at home.

You have published celebrated Middle

P Eastern cookbooks for more than

a decade. With renewed interest in

international flavours, including the Dubai

Chocolate trend, why do you think Middle

Eastern cuisine continues to captivate home

cooks?

S

Middle Eastern cuisine continues to

captivate home cooks because it is

delicious!

Spiced Saffron

Chicken Kebabs

Persians love a chicken kebab, and over the years I

have created many versions of the classic recipe for

saffron lemon chicken. This is one I’m really proud

of because it has hints of Turkish cuisine with the

inclusion of pul biber, and a little sprinkling of

Greek influence by way of the oregano and garlic

combo. No matter the ingredients, as always with

me, flavour is everything and these are full of

flavour and perfect for the barbecue as well as the

oven! Serves 2-4 people.

INGREDIENTS

650g boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into

bite-sized pieces

Olive oil

Flatbreads, to serve

For the marinade

1 large onion, halved and thinly sliced into half

moons

3 garlic cloves, minced

2 good pinches of saffron threads, ground to a

powder using a pestle and mortar, then steeped in

2–3 tablespoons boiling water

1 tablespoon dried wild oregano

2 teaspoons ground turmeric

1 heaped teaspoon pul biber chilli flakes

1 tablespoon caster sugar

finely grated zest and juice of 2 unwaxed limes

150g (5½oz) thick Greek yogurt

Maldon sea salt flakes and freshly ground black

pepper

METHOD

For the marinade, put the onion and garlic into

a mixing bowl, season very generously with salt

and pepper and stir. Add the remaining marinade

ingredients and mix well, then add the chicken

pieces and a generous drizzle of olive oil and mix

well again. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and

leave the chicken to marinate in the refrigerator for

at least 1 hour, or overnight if preferred.

When ready to cook, preheat your oven to its

highest setting. Line a baking tray with baking

paper and place the chicken on it. (If you have

metal or wooden skewers you can thread the

chicken pieces onto them and place them on

the lined tray.) Drizzle the chicken with a little

olive oil, then cook for 18–20 minutes until

nicely browned and cooked through. Serve with

flatbreads.

Five Easy Ways To Add

Fibre Into Your Diet

Most of us know we should be eating more fibre, yet

fewer than 5% of UK adults meet the recommended

daily intake of 30g. This isn’t surprising when

you consider that our modern food system has

systematically stripped fibre from our diets. What

was once naturally abundant in our ancestors’

meals, who consumed around 100g daily, has been

processed out of existence in favour of shelf-stable,

profit-driven products.

However, adding more fibre to your diet is simple.

Make strategic additions that slow sugar absorption,

support gut health, and keep you satisfied for longer.

WHY FIBRE MATTERS MORE THAN EVER

In nature, sugar never appears without fibre. When

our ancestors found sweet foods like fruits or berries,

they came packaged with natural fibre that slowed

sugar absorption. Today’s food industry has changed

this completely, creating products packed with sugar

but stripped of fibre.

When you eat sugar without fibre, your blood sugar

spikes rapidly, which overwhelms your body’s ability

to cope. Your body responds by storing this excess

sugar as body fat and flooding your system with

insulin. Within a couple of hours, your blood sugar

crashes, leaving you hungry again and craving more

sugar.

This cycle keeps you trapped in constant hunger and

weight gain. Fibre breaks this cycle by slowing sugar

absorption, keeping your blood sugar stable and

helping you feel satisfied for longer.

1. ADD SEEDS TO YOUR DIET

The Strategy: Keep a selection of seeds, chia, flax,

pumpkin, sesame, and sunflower, and add them to

your meals throughout the day.

The Science: A 30g serving of chia seeds contains

over 10g of fibre, while flaxseeds provide 8g. These

powerhouses don’t just add crunch, they create a

protective barrier in your digestive system.

How To Make It Practical: Mix different seeds into

a jar and keep it handy. Sprinkle them on salads, stir

into yoghurt, blend into smoothies, or add to soups.

Whether you’re having breakfast cereal or an evening

meal, a simple sprinkle transforms any dish into a

fibre-rich experience.

Top Tip: For busy mornings, pre-mix seeds into your

58 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

breakfast preparations the night before.

2. CHOOSE YOUR VEGETABLES

STRATEGICALLY

The Strategy: Focus on the highest-fibre vegetables

that deliver maximum benefit with minimal effort.

The Winners: Brussels sprouts pack 4g per cup,

followed by broccoli, beetroot, and carrots.

How To Make It Practical: Batch-cook vegetables at

the weekend. Roast a tray of Brussels sprouts, steam

some broccoli, or prepare a large pot of vegetable

soup. Having fibre-rich options ready in your

fridge makes healthy choices effortless during busy

weekdays. Even frozen vegetables work brilliantly

and are often more nutritious than ‘fresh’ ones that

have travelled long distances.

3. RETHINK YOUR SNACKING

The Strategy: Replace processed snacks with nuts,

seeds and low-sugar fruits.

The Smart Choices: A handful of almonds provides

nearly 4g of fibre, while raspberries offer 5g per 80g

serving. Compare this to typical snacks like crisps

or biscuits, which contain virtually no fibre despite

being packed with refined carbohydrates.

Top Tip: Create your own trail mix using almonds,

walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and a few dried berries.

Keep small portions in your desk drawer, car, or

handbag. When you’re next hungry, you’ll have a

fibre-rich option that actually satisfies rather than

triggering more cravings.

4. MASTER THE ART OF SUBSTITUTION

The Strategy: Swap fibre-stripped foods for highfibre

alternatives without sacrificing taste or

convenience.

Smart Swaps: Replace rice with cauliflower rice, use

spiralised vegetables instead of pasta, or try shirataki

noodles made from konjac root, which are almost

pure fibre. Even simple switches like choosing skinon

potatoes over peeled ones, or berries instead of

tropical fruits, can significantly boost your fibre

intake.

How To Make It Practical: Start with one substitution

per week. Don’t overhaul your entire diet overnight.

Try cauliflower mash instead of regular mashed

potatoes or add grated vegetables to your usual pasta

sauce. These changes often taste better than the

originals once your palate adjusts.

5. USE FIBRE AS A MEAL STARTER

The Strategy: Begin each meal with something

high in fibre to set the tone for better blood sugar

management.

The Method: Have a small salad, some raw

vegetables with hummus, or a handful of nuts before

your main course. This simple timing trick can

dramatically reduce the impact of whatever follows.

STEVE BENNETT

How To Make It Practical: Keep pre-cut vegetables

in the fridge or start meals with a simple green salad

dressed with olive oil and vinegar. If you’re dining

out, ask for the vegetable side dishes first, or snack

on olives or nuts while browsing the menu.

THE GRADUAL APPROACH WORKS BEST

Remember, increasing fibre intake should be

gradual. Your digestive system needs time to adjust,

so add these strategies one at a time over several

weeks. Also, increase your water intake as you boost

fibre consumption, they work as a team.

The beauty of focusing on fibre is that it’s about

addition, not subtraction. You’re not giving up foods

you love, you’re adding protection to your meals.

This approach proves sustainable because it works

with your body’s natural systems rather than against

them.

Small changes compound into significant health

improvements. Every fibre-rich choice is a vote for

better blood sugar balance, improved gut health and

sustained energy levels.

ABOUT THE EXPERT

Steve Bennett is on a mission to revolutionise diet

culture, expose large food corps for supplying UPFs

and create a healthier nation. When his parents were

to echo a single drop of cognac, its clarity enhancing

the opulence of the liquid within. The craftsmanship

continues with a deep red crystal horse head stopper

that captures the animal’s strength and grace. Resting

on a golden pedestal embellished with a horseshoe

motif and individually engraved at the neck, each

bottle is part of a strictly limited run of 500. Encased

within a beautifully crafted wooden presentation case,

the ensemble forms a striking tribute to the Year of

the Horse and to the enduring bond between Maison

Martell and China.

Nick Hatfield is Managing

Director of Sanlorenzo Yachts

UK and Ireland. Nick heads up

the award-winning sales team at

Sanlorenzo Yachts UK with 17

years of yacht sales experience

across multiple power brands.

In 2020, Nick led the introduction

of the Sanlorenzo brand to the

UK, to serve the growing demand

for made-to-measure yachts

amongst British-based consumers.

Having grown up around the

water, Nick has a genuine passion

for boating and has competed

for many years on dinghies and

sailing yachts around UK and

European waters.

For those drawn

to life on the water,

there has rarely been

a better time to take

the step into luxury

yacht ownership

An Insider’s Guide

to Luxury Yacht

Ownership in the UK

For many discerning individuals,

a yacht continues to represent the

ultimate expression of freedom,

privacy, and independence. More

than a mode of travel, it is a

lifestyle choice – a way to enjoy

time with family and friends

in complete seclusion, while

retaining the flexibility to explore

at will.

In the UK, yacht ownership has

evolved significantly over recent

years. Advances in bespoke

yacht design, coupled with

further investment in marina

infrastructure, are reshaping

not only how people approach

ownership but also where they

choose to spend their time on

the water. The result is a market

that feels more dynamic, more

accessible, and more tailored than

ever before.

Having witnessed these changes

first-hand over the decades, I have

seen how trends in ownership are

shifting and why today feels like

a particularly exciting moment

for those considering the yachting

lifestyle.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT YACHT

FOR UK WATERS

Luxury yachting in the UK is

enjoying a renewed sense of

vitality. Increasingly, owners are

looking to balance time between

home waters and international

cruising grounds. While 40-metreplus

superyachts remain a staple of

Mediterranean glamour, closer to

home the trend is towards smaller,

more versatile vessels – typically

between 20 and 30 metres.

These yachts strike an appealing

balance: agile enough to handle

the changeable conditions of the

British coastline, yet refined and

luxurious enough to deliver the

comfort and style expected of

a superyacht. Their versatility

makes them well-suited for

a weekend in the Solent, an

extended cruise to the English

Riviera, or a summer voyage north

to Scotland’s dramatic west coast.

Marinas across the country

are also responding to this

resurgence in demand. From

the south coast to the Scottish

Highlands, facilities are expanding

to accommodate larger yachts

and offer enhanced services.

Dedicated superyacht berths are

becoming more common, creating

an environment where owners can

confidently base their yachts in

the UK without compromise. This

shift is helping to foster a culture

of domestic cruising, encouraging

more people to see Britain’s

coastline not as a seasonal

alternative, but as a rewarding

destination in its own right.

THE JOY OF THE DESIGN

JOURNEY

While the freedom of ownership

is a powerful draw, the process

of creating a yacht remains one

of the most enjoyable aspects for

many. The design journey is an

opportunity to shape a vessel that

feels entirely personal – a home on

the water that reflects individual

values, tastes, and lifestyles.

Shipyards, like Sanlorenzo, that

embrace a truly bespoke, made-tomeasure

philosophy are thriving,

allowing owners to collaborate

closely with designers and

naval architects. The creativity

being expressed through these

partnerships is striking. Expansive

wellness areas with gyms, saunas,

and treatment rooms are now

commonplace. The growing

trend towards remote working

has also found its way on board,

64 PRENEUR WORLD www.preneur-world.com

with elegant offices and study

spaces becoming highly soughtafter,

supported by advanced

connectivity such as Starlink

satellite systems.

Social and leisure spaces, too, are

evolving. Flexible layouts that

can adapt from family time to

entertaining are proving popular,

while indulgent features such as

private beach clubs, spa pools, and

hammams bring an atmosphere

of luxury once reserved for much

larger yachts. In many ways, these

innovations have transformed

yachts from being primarily about

transport and cruising into genuine

retreats – floating sanctuaries

where work, play, and relaxation

can exist in harmony.

A SHIFT TOWARDS

SUSTAINABILITY

Another defining change in recent

years has been the increasing

emphasis on sustainability.

Yacht owners are not only more

conscious of their environmental

impact, but they are also

demanding practical solutions that

align with their values.

Hybrid propulsion systems,

advanced battery technology,

and eco-conscious materials are

no longer experimental; they are

becoming integral parts of newbuild

projects. This shift allows

owners to enjoy the performance

and range of traditional yachts

while reducing emissions

and increasing efficiency. For

many, it is reassuring to know

that embracing the luxury of

yachting does not have to come

at the expense of the marine

environment.

A POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR UK

YACHT OWNERSHIP

Taken together, these

developments paint a picture

of confidence and opportunity

for yacht ownership in the

UK. Marina investment is

enabling larger vessels to

remain domestically, the design

process is more collaborative

and personalised than ever, and

the industry’s commitment to

sustainability is setting a new

benchmark.

Yet at its core, the essence of

ownership has not changed. A

yacht remains a powerful symbol

of independence – a private

platform from which to explore,

unwind, and spend time with

those who matter most. What has

changed is the environment in

which that ownership takes place:

one that is more sophisticated,

more supportive, and more aligned

with modern values.

For those drawn to life on the

water, there has rarely been a

better time to take the step into

ownership.

COMO Metropolitan Bang

This 5-star luxury hotel has been

reimagined by Italian designer Paola

Navone into a luxurious urban sanctuary

in the vibrant heart of the Thai capital

COMO Hotels and Resorts has

reopened COMO Metropolitan

Bangkok, marking an exciting

new chapter in the hotel’s 22-year

evolution, and a vibrant new lure

to the Central Business District at

the heart of the Thai capital.

As part of the brand’s commitment

to contemporary urban living,

the hotel’s design — including

all studio and metropolitan

rooms — has been reimagined

by Italian designer Paola Navone.

This Bangkok opening becomes

Navone’s second project in

Thailand for COMO Hotels and

Resorts, and a perfect pairing

with the island hotel, COMO Point

Yamu, on the southern Thai island

of Phuket.

Navone’s trademark is a modern

sense of place without cultural

pastiche. This is achieved through

sensitively balancing local

materials (wood, ceramic, and

stone), and a confident, playful

contemporaneity using form

and colour, including oversized

woven seat-backs and splashes

of Buddhist orange. Textures,

including marble, are simple,

satisfying and luxurious, and

come alive in the play of light and

shadow. The lobby counter —

clad in textured stone with subtle

reliefs — draws inspiration from

Thai masonry and temple walls,

whilst an overhead patterned

bamboo wall recalls traditional

Thai screens filtering the tropical

skies.

“With our urban properties, I’ve

always wanted to create hotels

with spirit which are dynamic

and design-forward,” says COMO

Hotels and Resorts’ founder,

Christina Ong, who opened her

first Metropolitan hotel in London

in 1997; “But they also need to

be elegant and exceptionally

comfortable — places where our

guests can retreat from the city

to enjoy a pared-back, almost

meditative simplicity.”

This balance — between lively

city living, and the serene

escapism travellers seek with busy

schedules — is also manifested in

the hotel’s key offerings, including

dining and wellness.

Awarded an eighth consecutive

one-Michelin star in the Michelin

Guide 2025, nahm on the ground

floor of COMO Metropolitan

Bangkok, led by Chef Pim

Techamuanvivit, offers a refined

take on regional Thai cuisine.

Reservations are essential for this

spectacular journey in the sweet,

salty, hot and sour contradictions

of one of Asia’s most complex

cuisines.

But sometimes, guests want

something a little easier — a

familiar comfort food, or a light,

healthy option after a late-night

arrival. With this in mind, COMO

Cuisine makes its Thai debut at

the new COMO Metropolitan

Bangkok with a new restaurant

on the second floor and a

substantial all-day dining menu.

Developed by Australian chef

Daniel Moran, COMO’s Culinary

Vice President, alongside COMO

Group Executive Chef, Amanda

kok

Gale, menus feature salads, soups,

meats and fish dishes, ‘kitchen’

classics, sharing dishes, and kids’

favourites. The restaurant also

features a wide selection from

COMO Shambhala Kitchen — a

healthy living concept with an

emphasis on whole foods. Dishes

are low in sugar, salt and free of

artificial additives. The energising

juices are thoughtfully crafted in

collaboration with COMO’s expert

nutritionist to nourish both body

and mind.

While the Navone-designed lobby

and the hotel’s 25m-long outdoor

pool invite conviviality, guests can

also retreat completely for yoga

and restorative treatments at the

hotel’s iconic COMO Shambhala

wellness centre featuring 10

treatment rooms, a yoga studio,

gym and hydro pool.

This redesign attracts guests who

want some peace and quiet in the

city centre, but that’s not to say

it’s a hotel where you are cut off

from the culture. The hotel’s new

Iconic Experiences, designed to

immerse guests in the culture and

creativity of Bangkok, include

a private shopping experience

in collaboration with Club 21

— another of Christina Ong’s

companies, featuring different

stores across the city specialising

in highly edited collections

of men’s and womenswear.

Oenophiles also have access via

new Iconic Experience to the

Monsoon Valley Siam Winery

— a bold new departure for

viticulture just outside Bangkok.

This immersive journey helps

diners make sense of the terroir,

and the wine pairings recently

introduced to the hotel’s Thai

restaurant.

The reopening of COMO

Metropolitan Bangkok, with is

elegantly appointed 137 rooms and

suites, is an important moment

as part of a bigger journey for

the brand. “We now have five

urban hotels, with two in London,

and one in Perth, Singapore and

Bangkok. They all share a careful

balance of public style and private

calm,” says Olivier Jolivet, CEO of

COMO.
