Syrup Meters: Titan Enterprises

concentrate on ‘ultra reliable’

dispense solutions

itan’s robust flowmeter

Ttechnology is proving industry

recommended in helping beverage

manufacturers solve sticky situations.

Soft drinks are typically

formulated from a combination of

water (which may be carbonated)

and a syrup flavouring. Soft drinks

manufacturers such as Coca Cola,

use a twin dispense system to carefully

combine and control each fluid to

the exact concentration, ensuring the

quality and consistency of flavour that

their customers expect.

Dispense systems assure consistent and

accurate measures of syrup are supplied

during the dispensing of each soft drink.

For low viscosity syrups or flavour

additives and the diluent being dispensed

alongside, both can be controlled and

monitored using a turbine flowmeter.

Titan’s NSF-Approved 800 series and

Beverage flowmeters are widely used

within the food and drinks industry

for this purpose. These meters are the

industry proven choice of many being

both effective and reliable flow sensors,

with some manufacturers also using them

as low-cost alternative flow switches.

As syrup increases in viscosity, positive

displacement oval gear flowmeters are

used for accurate dosing. Due to the

nature of syrup viscosities – sugar free

syrup has a lower viscosity than full

sugar syrup for example – oval gear

flowmeters can address variable viscosity

fluids to measure the rate of syrup flow.

Where a higher level of accuracy is

required, oval gear flow meters can also

be calibrated specifically for the syrup

type. Dispensing equipment software

is then capable of switching between

multiple calibrations for an individual

flow measurement device, enabling

multi-syrup dispense using a single

oval gear ‘syrup meter.’

Visit Titan’s website:

information on Titan’s range of turbine

and oval gear flowmeters. To discuss a

ape2o and Chiltern Railways

join forces to launch ‘Big

Ape’: Water refill stations

at Marylebone Station

n an exciting and important

Idevelopment for a plastic free future,

ape2o has today unveiled a partnership

with Chiltern Railways to bring their

pioneering water refill stations to

Marylebone Station, marking a major

stride towards eradicating single-use

plastics in transportation hubs.

This is the first installation of a Big Ape

in a major London station, underlining

ape2o’s significant progress in fighting the

war on plastic and emphasising Chiltern

Railways’ commitment to reducing single

use plastic across its network.

Big Ape’s bring the best people the best

water on-the-go without destroying the

planet. In partnership with Chiltern

Railways, ape2o is now able to embolden

their mission and convert more people

to drink water without plastic. The

partnership also highlights Chiltern’s

broader ambition to modernise and

green their operations by 2030.

Primates of plastic abolition and

providers of the best water you can

drink, Big Ape’s don’t monkey around.

Not just any refill stations; they are a

beacon of technological advancement,

offering chilled, ultrafiltered

water – still or

sparkling – at a fraction

of the cost of plastic

bottled water.

There is no time to lose: less than 10%

of single-use plastic bottles are recycled,

the majority ending their journey in our

oceans or landfills, or being incinerated,

contributing to over a quarter of a million

tonnes of CO 2

e emissions annually.

And ape2o don’t just talk about it, they

do it. 10% of all their sales go to ocean,

freshwater, and marine life conservation

and clean-up projects. The less plastic

bottles used via Big Ape’s, the more

these projects receive and the closer

we get to a world without single use

plastic. ape2o is water that gives back.

HANDLING & STORAGE COMPANY OF THE YEAR

Setting the benchmark f

In this issue of Food

& Drink Matters, we

are pleased to feature

Alison Handling as our

Handling & Storage

Company of the Year

n the food and drink industry, success is often

judged by what reaches the plate or the shelf.

IYet behind every finished product lies an unseen

infrastructure – the systems, materials and logistics

that ensure ingredients move safely, efficiently and

without compromise. It is within this vital but often

overlooked space that Alison Handling has built its

reputation.

Established in 1988, Alison Handling has grown from

a family-run operation into one of the UK’s most

respected specialists in plastic storage and handling

solutions. From its base in Preston, the company

supplies businesses across the food and drink sector

with the equipment that underpins day-to-day

operations – quietly supporting manufacturers,

processors, distributors and hospitality operators as

they navigate increasingly complex supply chains.

While the company may not always be front of mind,

its products are ever-present on factory floors, in cold

stores and distribution centres nationwide.

At the heart of Alison Handling’s success is an

exceptionally broad and carefully curated

product range. As the UK’s

largest independent

stockist of plastic storage

solutions, the company

offers everything from

Euro stacking containers

and bale arm crates to

ingredient bins, plastic

pallets, dollies and insulated

containers. Designed with durability,

hygiene and efficiency in mind, many

of these products are manufactured using

food-grade materials, making them ideally

suited to the rigorous standards demanded by food

and drink production environments. Smooth surfaces,

easy-clean designs and robust load capacities ensure

they perform just as reliably on a bakery line as

they do in meat processing, beverage distribution or

foodservice logistics.

But Alison Handling’s role extends beyond supplying

new equipment. The company is also a significant

player in the reuse and resale of plastic storage

products, buying and selling high-quality used

containers to help customers reduce costs while

extending product life cycles. This commitment

to reuse and recyclability reflects a broader

understanding of sustainability - not as a marketing

slogan, but as a practical, embedded part of how

modern supply chains must operate.

What truly distinguishes Alison Handling, however,

is its responsiveness. With extensive warehousing

and strong transport links, the company is known

for rapid fulfilment, including same-day dispatch

on many items and next-day delivery options

for time-critical operations. In an

industry where delays

can mean waste, lost

revenue or compromised

quality, that reliability

is invaluable. Coupled

with a knowledgeable

and approachable sales

team, and by focusing on

quality, practicality and long-term

partnerships, Alison Handling has become

a trusted backbone of the sector – proving that

excellence isn’t always loud, but it is always essential.

In a recent blog - a rare glimpse into how they

approach storage solutions at a tactical level – the

company outlined how the humble plastic storage

box, often taken for granted, can be a powerful engine

of organisational efficiency for businesses of all shapes

and sizes.

For the food and drink sector in particular, where

time, hygiene and traceability are non-negotiable, the

principles Alison Handling champions are meaningful.

Durable, stackable and easy to access, their storage

boxes are designed to maximise valuable space,

helping busy kitchens, cold stores, distribution hubs

and ingredient preparation areas stay clutter-free and

operationally sound. Whether it’s reclaiming vertical

shelving space in a bakery or segregating seasonal

packaging in a beverage warehouse, these containers

turn chaos into clarity – a benefit that reverberates

through every stage of production and fulfilment.

But efficiency is only half the story. The blog also

highlights how the right storage solutions protect

inventory from damage – dust, moisture and pests

pose real threats in food environments, and welldesigned

plastic boxes with secure lids offer a sealed,

hygienic shelter for dry ingredients, utensils and

surplus stock alike. For food and drink operations,

this isn’t just convenience; it’s an extension of safety

and quality control.

Alison Handling doesn’t just itemise products – they

articulate purpose. Clear or labelled boxes make

what’s inside instantly visible, reducing search time

HANDLING & STORAGE COMPANY OF THE YEAR

or handling & storage

also serves as the exclusive UK distributor for Saeplast

insulated containers, offering temperature-controlled

perishable food sectors.

and smoothing workflows for teams juggling multiple

tasks. That kind of operational simplicity enhances

efficiency and also contributes to workplace safety,

something increasingly valued in food processing,

hospitality and catering sectors where cluttered

spaces can lead

to accidents or

compliance issues.

Perhaps most

importantly,

their solutions

are remarkably

versatile. Their

containers serve

diverse sectors

– from retail

and healthcare to

construction and

office environments

– but the principles

remain the same:

better organisation

supports better business

outcomes. In an industry where

batch turnovers, seasonal peaks and

intricate supply chains are everyday

realities, this flexibility translates to

a meaningful strategic advantage.

It’s this combination of practical

guidance and product excellence that

makes Alison Handling more than a supplier; they are

operational partners. By helping companies streamline

storage, protect stock and enhance safety, they not

only make workflows smoother but also contribute

quietly to the consistent quality of the wider food and

drink landscape.

It is also worth spotlighting how Alison Handling’s

expertise resonates with one of the food and drinks

sector’s most critical audiences: wholesalers. In

its recent feature as a new member of FWD – the

Federation of Wholesale Distributors, the

company clearly articulated the practical range

of solutions it brings to businesses that

move and manage stock at scale.

For wholesalers - where operational

simplicity, reliability and speed of

fulfilment are daily imperatives - Alison

Handling doesn’t just supply

storage solutions; it tailors

them. Its comprehensive

catalogue spans lidded

and unlidded storage

containers, pallet

boxes, trays,

trucks and

pallets, all

designed to

help distributors

move and store

products with

ease no matter the

category on their shelves.

These aren’t generic boxes

pulled from a catalogue; they are

business-ready tools that respond directly

to real-world challenges such as space optimisation,

hygiene compliance and ease of movement across

high-velocity supply environments.

Crucially for food and drink wholesalers, many of

these products are available in food-grade materials,

ensuring that containers, trays and pallets meet

stringent safety and hygiene requirements – a nonnegotiable

in cold stores, dry goods depots and

multi-temperature facilities alike. Alison Handling

But versatility isn’t the only advantage. The

company’s approach to service delivery reflects a

deep understanding of wholesale workflows. Alison

Handling assigns dedicated account managers to

its clients, providing hands-on advice, same-day

quotations and tailored recommendations that

help wholesalers choose the right solutions before

inefficiencies take root. Quick turnaround remains

a hallmark of their service too: premium next-day

delivery and economy options within two to three

days mean stock decisions aren’t stalled while supplies

are arranged – a logistical lifeline where timing

directly impacts shrinkage, throughput and customer

satisfaction.

Their commitment to wholesalers is further

underscored by the option to make products to order,

allowing businesses to specify exactly what they need

rather than compromise on off-the-shelf options. It

isn’t simply about selling a stack of boxes; it’s about

ensuring the right tools are in place for complex

storage challenges – whether that’s maximising

footprint, segmenting SKUs, or improving the flow

between warehouse and delivery vehicles.

This wholesale-centric ethos dovetails with the

broader narrative we’ve been tracking: Alison

Handling’s products aren’t static assets; they are

enablers of operational clarity and commercial

confidence. So, for wholesalers navigating competitive

pressures, tight margins and evolving regulatory

requirements, having a dependable partner in storage

and handling isn’t just helpful – it’s strategic.

Here at Food & Drink Matters, we recognised

Alison Handling as a business that understands the

food and drink industry at a fundamental level.

From manufacturers and wholesalers to hospitality

operators, Alison Handling supports the systems that

keep supply chains moving, standards high and waste

low. In an environment where margins are tight and

expectations relentless, their solutions deliver clarity,

confidence and consistency. Quietly dependable

yet strategically vital, Alison Handling exemplifies

the kind of operational excellence that rarely seeks

attention – but unquestionably deserves recognition.

PACKAGING INNOVATIONS & EMPACK 2026 PREVIEW

Delipac the smart safe solution

elipac board is a modern paperboard solution

Ddeveloped for cups and food packaging

applications where performance, safety, and

sustainability must work seamlessly together.

Created in response to the growing demand for

responsible packaging, Delipac combines robust

functional properties with a fibre-based structure

that supports full recyclability and circular material

flows, without compromising on quality or

reliability.

At its core, Delipac is engineered for demanding

food-contact uses. Applications such as hot and

cold beverage cups, takeaway containers, and

quick-service food packaging require dependable

resistance to moisture, grease, and temperature

variation. Delipac delivers this protection while

retaining excellent stiffness, foldability, and print

quality attributes that are essential for efficient

converting, consistent production and strong shelf

appeal. This balance of performance and aesthetics

enables brands to maintain functionality while

presenting a premium look and feel to consumers.

One of Delipac’s most important differentiators

is that it is completely PFAS free. Per and

polyfluoroalkyl substances have historically been

used to enhance grease and moisture resistance in

food packaging, but they are increasingly under

scrutiny due to their persistence in the environment

and potential health risks. By eliminating PFAS

from its formulation, Delipac supports safer food

contact, simplifies regulatory compliance, and

aligns with brand strategies focused on reducing

harmful and persistent chemicals. This makes

Delipac a future-ready solution for companies

aiming to anticipate both regulatory change and

evolving consumer expectations.

The PFAS-free status of Delipac board is

independently validated its absence of plastics

through Flustix certification. Known for its

rigorous criteria and transparent verification

processes, Flustix provides credible third-party

confirmation that packaging materials avoid

problematic substances. This independent

recognition strengthens trust across the value

chain and helps brand owners, retailers and

consumers quickly identify safer, more responsible

packaging choices supporting clear and confident

sustainability communication at the point of sale.

Beyond safety and compliance, Delipac board

contributes meaningfully to broader sustainability

goals. As a purely paper fibre-based material,

it supports renewable sourcing and can be

integrated into established paper recycling systems.

Its combination of performance, safety and

environmental responsibility makes it particularly

well suited for foodservice brands transitioning

away from fossil-based or chemically intensive

materials.

Along with its recyclability credentials and stricter

PFAS limits for food packaging coming into force –

the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation

in August 2026, with similar measures expected in

the UK – Delipac represents a Smart Safe choice for

converters and brands seeking to meet legislative

requirements while appealing to growing consumer

demand for responsible packaging.

Mitigate fire risk through TR19 ®

Grease compliance

Professional kitchen extract ductwork

cleaning is essential for both hygiene

and fire safety, as highlighted by

Gary Nicholls, MD of Swiftclean, a

specialist in ductwork risk management.

In any kitchen, the cooking process produces

fine airborne droplets of fat, oils, and grease,

collectively known as FOGs. As this greaseladen

air passes through the extract system, it

cools, leaving behind deposits that accumulate

into a greasy layer on the interior surfaces of

the canopy and ductwork.

To align with the TR19 ® Grease specification

established by the Building Engineering Services

Association (BESA), the grease layer must not

exceed an average thickness of 200 microns –

approximately half the thickness of a standard

business card. Compliance with TR19 ® Grease

serves as a crucial fire safety measure, offering

protection to staff, patrons, and residents

in both your premises and neighbouring

establishments.

HOSPITALITY MATTERS

In the unfortunate event of a fire, adherence to

the TR19 ® Grease specification may be a crucial

requirement for your

building’s insurance

policy to cover

damages effectively.

This compliance is

increasingly expected

by insurers to ensure

that appropriate

measures are in

place to protect their

interests and mitigate

risks associated with

grease accumulation in

commercial kitchens.

To verify that your establishment meets

these compliance requirements, it is highly

advisable to engage

a qualified member

of the Vent Hygiene

Register (VHR) for

your specialised

cleaning needs. VHR

members are trained

professionals who have

demonstrated expertise

in ventilation hygiene,

and they can conduct

thorough cleaning

services that adhere to

industry standards.

Upon completion of their services, VHR

members can issue post-cleaning certification,

serving as tangible evidence that your

establishment has met all relevant legal

obligations. This certification not only helps

safeguard your property but also provides

valuable documentation in the event of an

insurance claim, demonstrating your proactive

approach to

fire safety and

compliance with

best practices.

Moreover, the

Regulatory

Reform (Fire

Safety) Order 2005 mandates the appointment

of a Responsible Person for your property, who

is tasked with ensuring compliance with TR19 ®

Grease as part of your fire safety protocols.

While your kitchen may be spotless, it is crucial

not to overlook the cleanliness of the extract

system, as it should be a priority in your

maintenance efforts alongside TR19 ® Grease

compliance.

PET FOOD NEWS

Sainsbury’s announces Battersea partnership

as it extends Nature’s Goodness range

Sainsbury’s has announced a three-year

partnership with dog and cat charity,

Battersea, marking the extension of the

retailer’s premium Nature’s Goodness dog

food range, which has doubled from 11 lines

to 23 since September.

Nature’s Goodness has proved a popular

addition to Sainsbury’s’ own label pet food

category. Developed with pet nutrition

experts, the range offers pet owners grain-free,

hypoallergenic recipes, crafted with carefully

selected natural ingredients and high meat

content to provide a complete and balanced

diet for dogs’ overall health and wellbeing.

Sainsbury’s has extended the Nature’s

Goodness range to include both dry and wet

dog food as well as treat options, offering

greater variety in dry food and convenient

formats for smaller dogs, including 100g

multipack pouches and 150g trays. The

partnership with Battersea means 10p from

every pack sold featuring the Battersea logo

will be donated to the charity, helping to

continue vital work caring for thousands of

dogs and cats across the UK.

Accompanied by new marketing and

packaging, including the new ‘goodness in

every bowl’ strapline, which articulates both

the expertly developed recipes and the dog

health benefits of the premium meals, the

Sainsbury’s Nature’s Goodness range now

includes five dry dog food lines, including three

new ones, all in 2kg packs: Adult Chicken,

Adult Lamb, Adult Small Dog, Adult Sensitive,

and Senior Dog. Three alu tray lines have

also been added, with 150g Chicken and Beef

variants, along with a 6 x 150g multipack.

There are also three multi-pack 12 x 100g dog

food pouches in three varieties; Adult, Senior

and Puppy and 3 new treats lines which are

launching in January.

Sainsbury’s’ decision to extend Nature’s

Goodness reflects both the success of the range,

and the continuing trend towards premium

dog food options, with a tailored approach

to answering both the needs of specific pets,

and the format preferences of pets and their

owners. The Battersea partnership sees the

retailer working with the charity to make

life better for dogs, cats, and the owners who

adore them.

Daniel Mortimer, Head of Buying – Pet at

Sainsbury’s, said, “The premium dog food

segment is performing well, and with Nature’s

Goodness, we’ve created a range that delivers

goodness in every bowl. Our recipes combine

nutrition, quality, and variety with pet owners’

love for their pets – and their desire to help

dogs in need. The partnership with Battersea

is central to that mission, and we’re proud to

feature our commitment to the charity on pack.”

The full Nature’s Goodness dog food range is

now rolling out nationally.

Crosse & Blackwell explores

exciting product innovation

Soup-Erb: Popcorn, Peanut Butter and Coffee amongst

wackiest soup toppings as Brits’ bizarre pairings revealed

New craze sweeps internet

as researchers uncover

obscure combinations

searched for online

laming’ hot crisps, cornflakes and chocolate

also feature in nation’s list of unusual flavours

Fto try, as Crosse & Blackwell explores exciting

new product innovation.

Peanut butter, popcorn and coffee are amongst the

most bizarre toppings Brits are pairing with their

soup as an unexpected new craze takes the internet

by storm.

Researchers have uncovered that millions of soup

lovers are searching for peculiar combinations online,

including peanut butter with mixed bean chilli soup

and salted popcorn and tomato soup. Hot honey

with cheese and tomato soup also piqued the nation’s

interest, as did anchovies in minestrone.

Inspired by this growing trend, Crosse & Blackwell

is taking experimentation to the next level, exploring

the development of three exciting new products that

combine their classic soups with unique flavours,

including chocolate and cornflakes.

It comes as data by Crosse & Blackwell unveiled that

over half (53%) 1 of Brits said they wanted to spice

up weekly lunches with two fifths (39%) saying they’d

give an unconventional topping a go if they see it in

an advert.

When quizzed on combinations they’ve already tried

or would be willing to experiment with, almost a

quarter of Brits (24%) wanted ‘flaming’ hot crisps on

their tomato soup with 21% naming salted popcorn

as their topping of choice when it comes to the

popular flavour.

Dill pickle chips as ‘croutons’ proved a

leading choice for 23% of the UK, while a

fifth (20%) fancied their broccoli and stilton

with cornflakes and 18% chose chocolate to

complement their mixed bean chilli soup.

But its soup fans in Swansea that led the

charge for ‘flaming’ hot crisps with half of the

region naming it their go-to topping. Leicester

followed second at 39% with Glaswegians a

close third at 38%.

When it comes to pairing popcorn with

tomato soup, 35% of people in Cambridge

opted for the unusual

dish with over a

quarter (27%) in

both Birmingham and

Manchester giving it

the nod. A quarter of

curious participants

in London admitted

wanting to give it a

go or having tried it

already.

Crosse & Blackwell Soup Development Chef, Ben

Jones, has jumped on the trend this festive season as

almost a third (32%) of Brits admit they’re most likely

to try an unconventional topping on Christmas Day.

Taking inspiration from popular online searches and

unusual pairings voted for by the nation, Ben is urging

soup lovers to give these three winter warmers a go

based on complementary flavour profiles:

● Cornflake Crunch Broc & Stilton (Broccoli &

Stilton soup topped with cornflakes)

● ‘Flaming’ Hot Tomato Soup (Cream of Tomato

topped with ‘flaming’ hot crisps of your choice)

● Chocolate Mixed Bean Chilli (Mixed Bean Chilli

soup topped with chocolate or cocoa powder)

And Crosse & Blackwell is taking this innovation one

step further, as it explores the development of three

new unconventional soups with obscure flavours, to

complement its popular range.

The brand is aiming to bring creativity to soup bowls

across the country and needs the nation’s help to

do so. Brits are being encouraged to try the bizarre

pairings over Christmas and reveal their favourites

on social media, so Crosse & Blackwell can develop

the unique products in line with what soup lovers

really want.

Crosse & Blackwell Soup Development Chef, Ben

Jones, comments, “Cornflakes on Broccoli & Stilton

might sound playful, but there’s real flavour science

behind it – the toasty crunch cuts through the

creaminess, and that hint of sweetness softens stilton’s

bold edge. It’s the kind of simple contrast that makes

every mouthful more satisfying. The same goes for

topping a creamy tomato soup with flaming hot

crisps: the chilli kick naturally boosts the tomato’s

acidity, while the crunch keeps each spoonful exciting.

And a dusting of chocolate on mixed bean chilli?

That’s a long-standing chef’s trick – cocoa deepens

savoury flavours, rounds out spices and gives the

whole bowl that slow-cooked richness we all love.”

“This trend shows that Brits aren’t just experimenting

for the fun of it – they’re leaning into combinations

that genuinely work. So if you’re curious, trust

your tastebuds and give these twists a try. They’re

unexpected, yes, but each one brings balance, warmth

and a little bit of festive comfort to the table.”

Whether it’s embracing the crunch with your Broccoli

& Stilton, braving the fiery heat with your Cream of

Tomato or indulging in chocolate-dusted Mixed Bean

Chilli, each combination is rooted in culinary science.
