Boating club
could sink over
campsite issue
BY KEES CHALMERS
Stopping annual campsite
holders in Pigeon Bay from
occupying their sites over
summer could see the downfall
of a long standing boating club.
Pigeon Bay Boating Club
has had ties to the local
campground since the 1970s,
with its committee members
using it as accommodation over
summer to run the club.
However, the committee
members who occupy the
sites do not comply with
the Reserves Act, which
outlines campers cannot
stay at a site for more
than four weeks over the
summer period unless
given ministerial consent.
Public consultation
from the city council is
under way to decide how
the campsite, and one at
Duvauchelle, can comply with
the act.
The public is being asked to
provide feedback on:
• The need for full compliance
with the act and removing long
time sites over summer.
• Allowing annual campers to
Zach
Hitchcock
remain as is and seek consent
from the minister.
• Retain annual sites but with
operational changes.
The city council would not
say the reason for enforcing the
Reserves Act now.
These could include reducing
the number of annual camping
sites and increasing equitable
access to camping sites.
Consultation is open until
January 31. The feedback
given will inform a staff
recommendation which
will be presented to Te
Pataka o Rakaihautu
Banks Peninsula
Community Board in
March.
The board will then
make a decision.
Said boat club
commodore Zach
Hitchcock: “Being able
to have accommodation
here and not have to drive
backwards and forwards
between Christchurch was an
important part of being able to
operate and maintain the club.
"It would really put the
viability of the club at risk if
those members no longer were
The Pigeon Bay Boating Club has existed since 1962 and has had ties to the local campground (below) for more than 50 years.
able to have their sites in the
way they do currently.”
The club, which has existed
since 1962, would be in danger
of falling over and organised
sailing in Pigeon Bay would
come to an end.
The club’s absence would
also see repercussions for the
campground itself, which has
spectators and competitors
staying there when Pigeon
Bay hosts regattas over
summer.
"You then would significantly
impact the revenue of the
campground,” said Hitchcock.
He added the enforcement
of the act would make little
difference as the campground is
very rarely fully booked.
"It's not exactly opening up
a significant amount of new
capacity in the campground,”
he said.
“But it would have a massive
impact if it is enforced on the
wider community and the yacht
club.”
Annual site holders from
the club also inform the
campground when they will not
be using it, freeing up available
space.
Hitchcock feels Pigeon Bay
has been lumped in with
Duvauchelle Holiday Park,
which has far more permanent
structures on the ground’s
annual sites.
"It's a recreational area, it's a
place for people to get outdoors
and get people on the water
and that's really what the club's
trying to do.
"Taking an action that that
would harm that seems like not
a great decision,” he said.
Bitches’ Box to go barking mad
BY KEES CHALMERS
Lyttelton resident Emma
Newborn and comedy partner
Amelia Dunbar’s quirky 10
minute sketch about a pair of
rural canines has since turned
into a national touring hit show
with a feature film on the way.
The comedy duo are now
unleashing a new episode of
The Bitches’ Box at the World
Buskers Festival next week.
Set on a North Canterbury
farm, the hour-long show follows
a pack of farm dogs. The
matriarchs of the pack, Red
and Twink, are on heat and
are locked in the bitches’ box.
This leaves underdogs Wayne
and Dick convinced this is their
opportunity to impress the boss.
Structured like an episode of
Country Calendar, but with the
animals being interviewed, the
show is a celebration of the real
heroes of rural life: the dogs.
This is the show’s first time
featuring at the festival.
Said Newborn: “They get such
rich, wonderful acts from all
over the world.
"Very excited to be in the programme
this year and bring it
to the city.”
Newborn and Dunbar met at
an event called Stranger Things
in 2011. By chance, the two
creatives were thrown together
and given a week to come
up with a 10 minute piece of
entertainment.
"We came up with these two
women who were talking really
Comedians Amelia Dunbar, left, and Emma Newborn are bringing The Bitches’ Box to World Buskers Festival next week.
candidly about wanting to
screw everyone in the district,
but the punchline was that they
were dogs on heat in a bitch
box and then it grew from there
really,” said Newborn.
They have since developed
four distinct episodes of the
show and toured woolsheds
around the the country, performing
for more than 30,000
people over eight years.
That was until the Covid
pandemic made live touring no
longer viable.
"It’s about making people
laugh and a little bit of ridiculous,
silly escapism in a world
which sort of seems to be getting
increasingly tricky to
navigate,” said Newborn.
The pair has just wrapped
shooting for their first feature
film titled Sons of a Bitch based
on the second episode of their
stage show.
It centres on a usual day for
two country dogs named Jack
and Russell on their farm. But
they find themselves trapped in
a therapy session with freshly
shorn sheep, led by an intimidating
ram - played by Josh
Thomson. To appease the baas,
the two dogs recount their
adventures to the big smoke
- Ashburton, describing the
diverse dogs they met, and
begin to confront the truth of
what happened there.
Newborn and Dunbar also
wrote and co-directed the film
with Zac Beckett-Knight, who
has worked in the Canterbury
film industry for more than 10
years.
Newborn moved from Auckland
to Lyttelton two years ago
to film the movie.
The film is expected to be
released nationwide in July.
Newborn said she would
have laughed if she was told a
10 minute sketch would lead
to entering the editing room
on her own film. "That was not
what I expected when I signed
up to that initial gathering of
creative people, you’ve just got
to follow the threads,” she said.
While grateful for the prolonged
success of the show,
Newborn appreciates the relationship
formed with creative
partner Dunbar even more.
"I just think it's so joyful to be
able to jump around on stage
with someone that you have got
a really close friendship with,”
she said. "I feel incredibly
blessed to have found Amelia in
the world and to be making stupid
shows alongside her.”
BY KEES CHALMERS
Sheryl and Kim Stanbury have
been part of the Banks Peninsula
A&P Show for more than
40 years and counting.
This 118th edition is on Saturday
at Awa-Iti Domain from
8am to 5pm.
Kim, 57, has been managing
the event’s parking since he was
13, taking over from his grandfather
Colin before him.
Sheryl became involved in
1988 after moving to Little
River with Kim. The couple met
at Lincoln High School.
She was originally in charge
of photographing the event
before volunteering in the
flower and baking sheds sheds.
She has been part of the
show’s committee since 1988
and served as president in 2004
and 2005.
"It’s the involvement of the
community, it’s just getting
the community together and
showing off what Little River
is,” she said.
"We’re very proud of our
community and the show is one
way of showing that.”
Involvement in the show is
being passed down to the next
generation of Stanburys, with
son Troy helping his father with
the parking and their daughter
Bella delivering teas and
lunches.
The day will be filled with
horse events to dog jumping
and duck herding, plenty to see
and do for all ages.
There will be trade
Hole-in-one golf challenge
for men’s health charity
A new golf challenge will tee off at
the Hagley Golf Club next month
to raise money for a Christchurch
men’s charity.
Hagley Hole-in-One will become
a permanent attraction at the park
and offer cash and prize holes
while backing The Yarns Men
charity.
Set up with multiple tee bays
and targets, Hagley Hole-in-One
will be open from Thursday to
Sunday and suit people of all golfing
abilities.
Said The Yarns Men founder
Matthew Steans (right): “Golf
already brings people together.
“This just adds a bit of fun and a
bigger purpose. Every shot taken
helps us create more opportunities
for blokes to connect, have a yarn,
and feel part of their community.”
The Yarns Men is now calling
for volunteers to help bring the
Hagley Hole-in-One challenge to
life. The volunteers would help
with the day-to-day operations,
welcome players and help manage
the tee bays.
“You don’t need golf experience.
If you’re reliable, friendly and up
for good yarns, we’d love to hear
from you.”
The Yarns Men charity focuses
Over 70s ready
for world cup
on home soil
BY SAM COUGHLAN
The Black Caps might be in
India getting ready for next
month’s T20 World Cup, but
closer to home a national
side with considerably more
experience is gearing up for a
tournament of their own.
Akaroa’s Bob Masefield will
lead the national over 70s team,
known as the Grey Caps,
in the Over-70s World
Cup, which will be played
in Canterbury from
February 18.
The New Zealand team
includes five Canterbury
over 70s representatives,
and a further three who
live in the region but play
for Otago.
Masefield, who turned
70 in August, will captain the
side. He said the tournament
has been planned for some
time.
"We had our provincial
tournament about a couple
of months ago, and the team
was picked then so we've been
building from there.”
Masefield played one Plunket
Shield game for Canterbury in
the 1984/85 season. He is one
of three players with first-class
Bob Masefield
experience in the squad, alongside
former Otago batter Paul
Facoory and Auckland and
Otago fast bowler John Cushen.
With a game every two days,
fitness is an important focus for
the team.
Said Masefield: "I'm going to
the gym for the first time in my
life. In 70 years I've never been
to the gym and I'm going now,
everyone's putting a lot of
work in.”
Masefield did not take
part in the Over-70s
World Cup in England
two years ago – he was
not old enough – but has
represented the national
over 60s side on several
occasions including a
world cup, which is held
every three years in that
age bracket.
The Over 70s World Cup
features eight teams who will
meet each other in the roundrobin,
with the top-two teams to
play in the final at Hagley Oval
on March 5.
New Zealand’s first game
is against the Rest Of World
team, featuring players from
countries not participating
such as Pakistan and Scotland,
on February 18 in Ohoka. They
The Grey Caps during the last Over 70s World Cup in England. The tournament will be played in Canterbury next month.
NEW ZEALAND SQUAD
Bob Masefield (c), Roger
Stachurski (vc), Hamish Cochran,
John Cushen, Morris Dawson,
John Durning, Chris East, Paul
Facoory, Bevin Guthrie, Mike
Simon Payten, Tony Penny, Gary
Rudolph, Julian van Dyk, Evan
Watkin, Jeremy Wilson
then meet Sri Lanka, Australia,
the United States, India,
England and Canada. Masefield
said the two biggest games
would be against Australia
(February 22) and England
(March 1), with the Grey Caps
likely needing to win at least
one of those to make the final.
In 2024, they came fourth.
“We're going to have to
play our best to beat either of
them,” he said. "They've got
vast numbers to pick from, the
(over) 70s in New Zealand is
just growing at the moment and
if we can sneak a win against
one of them that would be
fantastic.”
Masefield said the level of
cricket was still high – several of
his teammates play president’s
grade in Christchurch, which
is open to players over 40. “The
batting is just as competitive
and bowling is still pretty
good. Fielding, of course,
drops off a little bit as you get
older. That's one of the things
we've really concentrated on
for this tournament, but the
Skipper leaves the Wave behind
to focus on life and business
After 131 games, 10 seasons
and three as captain,
Sumner’s most capped
division one player Tom Ziolo
will step away from the side.
Reporter Kees Chalmers spoke
with the 28-year-old about his
playing days and what lies
ahead for him
What went into the decision
to step away from the side this
season?
I've been around for 10
seasons playing in the Wave
side and, with the young group
that we’ve got there, I thought
the time was right to step aside
to let that next generation of
players come through and have
their chance. The body was
getting a bit slow, I feel like I’ve
had my time and had a good
crack at it.
Was it a tough decision to
make?
Definitely. We got so close in
2024 to achieving something
that no other Sumner team
had done, making the play-offs,
having a good run and losing
on the last play like we did to
Sydenham was the reason I
came back last year. Hoping we
could get back there and then
to have a losing season like we
had, it was tough to go out not
in a great way with results. But,
at the same time, I still thought
it was the right decision.
You also own your own
landscaping business. Did that
factor into your thinking?
Yeah, for sure. Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays are
all pretty much taken up with
rugby in the wintertime. Having
your own businesses can be a
bit of a juggling act. So it just
frees me up a little bit to put
a bit more priority into that
career and pursue the business.
Are you fully retired from
the sport? Or is there a chance
of a return?
I’ve always wanted to play in
the Heartland Championship.
That’s been a bucket list thing.
Tom Ziolo celebrating with friends after his 100th game for Sumner in 2023.
I’ve had a couple messages
that there’s an opportunity
there, but it’s a lot of travel
to the West Coast. One of my
former Sumner teammates, Nik
Cummings, is coaching there
now. I would have to play club
rugby there to be eligible for
selection so it’s just a dream
on paper at this stage. But
there’s definitely opportunities
to pursue something like that
which I haven’t been able to do
playing for Sumner.
What will you miss about
being part of the side?
Everything. The unique
thing about Sumner is that it’s
a pretty small club, so a lot of
the time Sumner bring in boys
from overseas so you’re making
awesome friendships from all
over the world every year
Mitch Cox is taking over
as captain of the Wave this
year. How do you think he will
go?
I’ve played with Coxey for
the last four or five years and
he’s a really good rugby player
and he’s definitely going to
lead with his actions. He’s a
competitive player and he loves
playing for Sumner. I think he'll
step up and he'll lead from his
heart and give it his all.
PHOTOGRAPHY
What were the emotions
like when you were appointed
captain?
For me, it was a little bit of
a shock. I'd been at the club
for six or seven years, but I'd
never really seen myself or
thought about being a captain.
When (Sumner head coach
Gareth D’Almeida) gave me the
opportunity it was pretty cool
and I was nervous about it. It
was awesome to be thought of
that way by somebody.
The Wave had an
inconsistent season last year
with a young squad. How do
you think they will fare this
season?
It was a very young team.
I think Gareth said we had
something like 23 or 25 new
players for the Wave last
season, which is something you
don’t very often see. They all
have experience now. We had
our ups and downs last year,
we had winning games and
good learning losses. So I think
if they take everything they
learned from that first year,
they’ll be competitive.
What do you remember
from your first game for the
Wave? Any key moments?
It was pretty daunting. I was
18 and I started at nine against
Burnside and I think they had
two Crusaders at the time, Pete
Samu and Ged Robinson. It’s
fair to say I was panicking a
little bit. I remember pretty
clearly going to pick up the ball
as a halfback, Pete Samu, was
cleaning me out of the ruck. The
contact and the hit was just a
real welcome to men’s rugby.
Are you able to pinpoint a
favourite moment from your
time with the Wave?
There’s probably two. It
would be the first time we won
the DCL Shield, which was the
only time I’d won it in 10 years.
We beat High School Old Boys
in 2016. That was a pretty good
couple of nights. Probably the
other one was in 2021. It was
club day against New Brighton
and we went the length of the
field on the last play and scored
a try to beat them. Beating New
Brighton’s always pretty good.
Conversely, what is the lowest
moment you have experienced
playing for Sumner?
I think it would be the 2020
season. We won one game and
we ended up potentially being
the first premier side to forfeit a
game. We weren't able to get the
internationals and the imports
over because of Covid. We had a
few boys that had kind of either
retired or changed clubs, so we
were really tight on numbers to
start with and then we kind of
just got through the season and
by the end of it we were down to
about 19 players that were able
to play. We ended up having to
forfeit and that was a pretty dark
team meeting on the Thursday
night saying that we weren't
going to play.
What is your proudest
moment for the club?
My 100th game was a
pretty proud moment,
having all my family and friends
there. But we also lost in the
quarter-finals to New Brighton.
You don’t really play club footy
for the achievements. You play
for the love of the game but to
have a night that was themed
around myself and what I’d
done for the club was a proud
moment.
MOTORING
Cannon Alpha
fires big shot
in ute battle
The super sized Cannon Alpha
is now the ‘big shot ute’ in the
GWM (Great Wall Motors) New
Zealand lineup, but is it hitting
the target with buyers here?
When it launched here last
year, the Cannon Alpha was
pitched as one of the largest utes
in its class.
At 1991mm wide, it sits
between a conventional dualcab
ute and a full-size American
pickup. It offers a 3500kg braked
towing capacity, up to 821kg of
payload, and features such as a
60/40 split tailgate on the rangetopping
Ultra model, providing
easier access to the deck.
On size alone, the Cannon
Alpha is now matched – and in
some cases overshadowed – by
newer arrivals such as the Kia
Tasman, LDV Terron and its MG
twin, the MU9.
Size is not the only thing these
utes share – pricing is also closely
aligned. However, the Chinese
models stand apart with their
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
longer seven-year new-vehicle
warranties, which offer added
peace of mind and may be
enough to tempt some buyers to
switch brand allegiances.
GWM claimed the Cannon
Alpha was the first ute sold in
New Zealand with a full hybrid
powertrain when it debuted
here. With strong hybrid
performance, 4x4 off-road
capability and a spacious cabin,
it appeared well positioned for
success.
Sales, however, have been
sluggish – perhaps reflecting how
tough it can be for a newcomer
to break into a market where
buyers tend to favour tried-andtrue
ute stalwarts. A notable
exception has been the strong
sales performance of the BYD
Shark EV and plug-in hybrid ute
last year.
The Cannon Alpha is offered
locally with either a turbodiesel
or plug-in petrol hybrid
powertrain. For this review, we
Rating out of 10: Performance 7, Handling and ride comfort 7, Build quality 7, Space 7, Styling 6, Fuel Economy
– on road test average consumption 8.8L/100km, Value for money 8, Safety – 2024 five star ANCAP crash rating
Price: $59,990.
Overall points out of 10: 7
drove the flagship $59,990 Ultra
2.4-litre turbo-diesel, producing
480Nm of torque. A more
affordable but still well-equipped
Lux variant is priced at $54,990.
Powering the standard Cannon
is GWM’s 2.4-litre single turbodiesel
four-cylinder engine,
delivering 135kW and 480Nm.
That torque figure matches the
Mitsubishi Triton’s twin-turbo
diesel and exceeds the recently
launched and heavily hyped Kia
Tasman by 40Nm.
The Alpha offers smooth
power delivery across the rev
range, aided by a variable
geometry turbocharger that
reduces lag while maintaining
efficiency at higher speeds.
While responsiveness and
pulling power are impressive,
overall smoothness and
refinement fall short of what is
needed to seriously challenge
class-leading rivals.
Engine noise remains the
biggest drawback — it is too gruff
for a modern diesel, particularly
during low-speed urban driving
and under harder acceleration
on the open road.
At highway speeds, however,
the Alpha settles into a more
composed and refined stride,
proving itself a capable longdistance
cruiser that delivers
occupants to their destination
relaxed and refreshed.
Power and torque are handled
by a nine-speed automatic
transmission shared with the
Cannon Alpha’s hybrid siblings.
In testing, the gearbox
occasionally stumbled, with
the odd clunky shift and
hesitant ratio selection. While
it ultimately chose the correct
gear, it did so less decisively
than expected from a modern
automatic.
Cleaner, crisper shifts would
bring it closer to the standard set
by established Japanese rivals
– an important consideration
given it is not priced significantly
below them.
Inside, there is plenty to like
about the spacious cabin, which
comfortably seats five with room
to spare. The driver benefits
from good all-round visibility
and clear controls for functions
such as indicators and wipers.
The tech offering is strong, led
by a 14.6-inch colour multitouch
screen with wireless Apple
CarPlay and wired Android Auto,
a 12-speaker premium Infinity
audio system, and climate
control.
A comprehensive suite of
safety and driver-assistance
systems is also included,
featuring adaptive cruise control,
lane departure warning and
blind-spot monitoring.
Suspension consists of a front
double-wishbone setup with a
rear multi-link, non-independent
arrangement. Together, they
do the job competently without
adding much sparkle.
Long-term durability on New
Zealand’s demanding roads and
rough terrain remains a “time
will tell” question.
The test vehicle felt more like
an urban cruiser than a hardcore
workhorse, though capable
of the occasional backcountry
excursion. This appears consistent
with GWM’s plans for the
Cannon Alpha.
Ride comfort is clearly
prioritised, and the plush
suspension tuning may not
appeal to the traditional
ute buyers drawn to more
rugged, work-focused Japanese
alternatives.
Road holding is secure at
moderate speeds, but increased
body roll becomes apparent
when pressing on through twisty
roads.
For those willing to look
beyond traditional badges, the
Cannon Alpha represents solid
value and everyday usability
– but to truly win over the
ute faithful, it needs to feel as
accomplished on the road as it
looks on the spec sheet.
Jim White & Marisa
Anderson
USA & AUS • Experimental
Jim White and Marisa Anderson are
among the best in their field internationally,
collaborating through extended
improvisation with dynamic percussion and
expressive guitar work. Their performances
emphasise responsiveness, space and
long-form development.
Our Carlson
Melbourne • Electronic, Punk
Our Carlson frames electronic music
through anarchic, confrontational themes
and lived experience, often channeling
epilepsy and political rupture into the
work. The project is known for intense,
uncompromising live sets that blend punk
energy with club forms.
WAIWHAI.
Tangiteroria • Puoro Punk, Free-Jazz
WAIWHAI. draws on taonga pūoro,
psychedelic noise and avant-garde beats
to reshape people-and-place–centred
performance. Each iteration foregrounds
shapeshifting awareness, whakapapa and
collaborative composition.
Mona Vasa
Ōtautahi • Indie Folk
Mona Vasa writes emotive songs that
combine noise rock, alt-country and indiepop
strands. Live, the project expands into
a multi-instrumental ensemble that shifts
intensity and texture.
Motte
Tāmaki Makaurau • Ambient
Motte constructs richly textured sound
beds using violin, theremin, field recordings,
synthesiser and voice. Her work includes
solo releases and commissioned
compositions for film and movement
presented internationally.
Roy Montgomery
and Company
Ōtautahi • Experimental
Roy Montgomery’s work centres layered,
patient guitar compositions that move
between melody and atmosphere.
Decades of recordings and collaborations
position him as a sustained presence in
experimental music.
Sewage
Ōtepoti • Experimental
Sewage operate from a lackadaisical
ethos that nonetheless produces sharp,
effective results; essentially two mates
blowing off steam. Their music arrives as
heteroclite bedlam—vicious, beautiful and
physically immediate.
Tina Disco
Melbourne • House, Electro, Latin Club
Tina Disco performs high-energy DJ sets
aimed at peak-time dancefloors. Her
programming stresses continuity, pressure
and collective release.
Oksun Ox
Tāmaki Makaurau • NZ Drone Scuzz Boogie
Oksun Oxperforms a one-man-band set
of live finger beats, Casio rhythms, drone
guitar, foot stomps and vocal croon. The
project mixes raw riffs and maximalist sound
play with a spronky live approach.
Sam Harmony
Tāmaki Makaurau • Electronic Dance
Sam Harmony programmes groove-led DJ
sets that favour long-form flow and uplifting
momentum. As co-host of Plato’s Retreat
on bFM, his approach prioritises sustained
warmth and shared dancefloor arcs.
Twin Rudders
Wairau / Blenheim • Rhythm Experiments
Twin Rudders perform improvised sets using
drums and electric/acoustic found sounds.
Their work relies on real-time response and
physical interaction with sonic material.
