| editor’s letter |
My husband, a former
high school running
back, is a full-fledged
football fanatic:
playing (both the real
game and fantasy football), watching
(Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays…), and
attempting to teach my daughters and
me the rules and regulations. While I’ve
come to understand the general gist
and goal of the game, my knowledge is
still very much rookie status. Players,
positions, terminology—this is where I
officially fumble.
That said, when it’s Super Bowl
Sunday—or when the 49ers are
playing—you’ll find me glued to the
TV: cheering, jeering, hooting, and
hollering just as much as (maybe more
than) my pigskin-obsessed other half.
Granted, I’m also snacking, socializing, laughing (or crying!) at the commercials,
and offering my unsolicited critique of the halftime show.
As of press time, we don’t yet know who this year’s NFL championship
contenders will be, but we do know where the Big Game is being hosted: close to
home in Santa Clara. How exciting is that? Our associate editor, Caitlin Emmett,
was lucky enough to make a trip there (and catch a game!) a few months back,
and in this month’s The 10 Spot, she shares some must-see attractions and can’tmiss
experiences—including Levi’s Stadium, of course. Turn to page 16 for her
recommendations. Even if Super Bowl tickets aren’t in the cards this year, you’ll
discover that the city is teeming with lively tailgating spots, TV-filled bars to belly
up to, and plenty of non-football fun, too.
If, like me, you’re hosting a Super Bowl bash but unsure what to serve, flip to The
Hot List (page 78) for five winning game-day recipes—courtesy of our area’s top chefs—
that are guaranteed to score with guests. Chips, dips, and sliders—oh my!
Football aside, February brings plenty of other reasons to celebrate, including
Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day. In honor of the latter, writer Sharon Penny
rounds up eight of the region’s most romantic restaurants in “Love Bites” (page
82)—spots that understand the recipe for romance includes soft lighting,
comfortable seating, attentive yet unobtrusive service, and unforgettable food.
And because Valentine’s Day and chocolate are a match
“You can’t win made in heaven, our feature story, “Loco for Cocoa” (page
64), highlights some of the most decadent, creative, fudgefilled
desserts and beverages guaranteed to satisfy any
together if you
don’t work sweet tooth.
together.”
That said, not everyone has found their forever mate.
–Nick Saban In “Not Taken” (page 20), Kourtney Jason introduces us to
four locals looking for love. Are you also single—or hoping
to play matchmaker? I can honestly say all four folks look
great on glossy-print paper and seem like quite a catch.
Whether love is in the air, chocolate is on your mind, or football is on the TV,
consider this issue your all-access pass to February fun. Game on!

EXPLORE
Santa Clara
by CAITLIN EMMETT
This month, the city of Santa Clara is hosting Super
Bowl LX—so what better time to explore the town’s
stadium and beyond? “Santa Clara shows up for
big moments, and we love welcoming the fans
who do the same. With exceptional hotels, a truly
diverse culinary scene, and entertainment at every
turn, it’s easy to settle in while staying in the heart of
the action, surrounded by the city’s unmistakable
energy. Whatever brings you to Levi’s Stadium, Santa
Clara makes the whole experience feel effortless
and genuinely memorable,” says Christine Lawson,
president & CEO of Discover Santa Clara. From
football and concerts to good eats and everything
in between, here’s a roundup of must-explore gems.
The Main Attraction
Levi’s Stadium (levisstadium.com), a LEED-Certified Gold Stadium, is home
to the San Francisco 49ers—and Super Bowl LX on February 8. Average
seating capacity is 68,500, but that can be expanded to over 75,000. The
stadium doesn’t sleep when football season is over, either; if you can’t snag
one of the coveted, in-person seats to watch the AFC and NFC champions
go head-to-head, check out the FIFA World Cup in June or rock out to Ed
Sheeran in July.
Levi's Stadium
Sophisticated Slices
Rise Woodfire Pizza & Rotisserie
(risewoodfire.com) strikes the perfect
balance between modern style and cozy
comfort. There's ample bar space if you
want to belly up, along with intimate
booths for a more private experience. The
wine and cocktail lists are solid; as for the
food, expect refreshing salads, organic
grass-fed meatballs, wood-fired pizzas
crafted from a special five-rise dough
process (think everything from classic
margherita to creative Medjool date &
chevre), rotisserie meats, and a rotating
selection of pie for dessert.
Rise Woodfire Pizza & Rotisserie
Sleep Tight
Hyatt Regency Santa Clara (hyatt.com/
hyatt-regency/en-US/clara-hyatt-regencysanta-clara)
makes getting to California’s
Great America or Levi’s Stadium a breeze.
Fuel up or grab a beverage before
heading out at Evolution Restaurant &
Bar (the lobby's large watering hole),
Truya Sushi, or Market, a café with
drinks and quick food options. It’s also
connected to the Santa Clara Convention
Center, ideal for any business stays
needed. Pro tip: book a stadium view
room to really immerse yourself!

pamphlet online or pick one up at the visitor's center. And don’t forget to incorporate the de
Saisset Museum (scu.edu/desaisset) into your trip, which holds mission-era artifacts.
New in Town
Looking for a nearby place to grab a bite before heading over to Levi’s Stadium? Clara’s
Junction (clarasjunction.com) is within walking distance and part of a new residential
development called Tasman East. It features eats like tacos and burgers, plus beers on tap,
lawn games, fire pits, a DJ on select dates/times, and an indoor/outdoor restaurant concept.
Even if you don’t have gameday tickets, there’s plenty of TVs to watch the game on.
Get Outside
Go for a walk, run, or bike ride through the 40-acre Ulistac Natural Area (ulistac.org), Santa
Clara’s sole dedicated natural open space that houses diverse California native plant
habitats. It’s also a hot spot for bird enthusiasts, especially during spring and fall when over
180 different species of birds have been spotted in the area! There’s an online scavenger
hunt for kids to complete, too; simply print it out before your trip.
Foodie’s Paradise
Santa Clara is home to a vibrant Koreatown on El Camino Real—and the Korean Food Trail
(discoversantaclara.org/blog/santa-clara-korean-food-trail) has a plethora of show-stopping
tasty bites. Despite multiple mentions over the years, it’s still thought of as a hidden gem.
Grab some beef bibimbap and crispy seafood pancakes at Master Oh’s (masterohs.menu11.

and marinated short ribs at Seorai (seoraisv.com), and bingsu (Korean shaved ice desserts) at

4 Locals Looking for Love
by KOURTNEY JASON
It’s February—and love is in the air! We’re playing
matchmaker with this playful peek at four
standout singles who make our community a
little more charming (and a lot more interesting).
Each heartthrob shares the goods, straightup
and unfiltered: what they do, what they’re
into, what they’re looking for, and what makes
them a catch beyond the dating-app bio basics.
Consider this your official permission slip to
swoon, smile, and maybe text your group chat,
“OK but WHY do I kind of love them?”
Aaron Lawrence | Age: 42
PROFESSION: College Counselor and College
Basketball Coach
A THREE-WORD HEADLINE THAT BEST
DESCRIBES YOU:
Loyal, considerate, fun.
FAVORITE HOBBIES:
Traveling to places I've never been. Staying
fit (yoga, working out outdoors, playing
basketball).
MOVIE YOU CAN WATCH ON REPEAT:
Coming to America.
FAVORITE TV BINGE RIGHT NOW:
House of the Dragon; Landman.
A FUN OR LITTLE-KNOWN FACT ABOUT YOU:
I’ve lived in both Alaska and Japan.
DATING GREEN FLAGS YOU LOOK FOR:
Thoughtfulness, self-awareness, being considerate,
smelling good, and a compatible sense of humor.
DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT SATURDAY:
Waking up with no alarm clock; eating delicious food, probably some type of
baked good; being outdoors for a walk or hike; and laughing a lot (preferably
with someone else).
YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT:
Basketball, lotion, and vegetables.
ARE YOU TYPICALLY THE PLANNER IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS?
For special occasions, yes!
WHAT'S YOUR IDEAL FIRST DATE?
Having a good conversation and laughing a lot. Eating really good food. Spending
time outside, especially if it's a nice 75-degree day. Oh, and dessert is a must!
WHAT'S SOMETHING YOU'RE PROUD OF THAT
PEOPLE DON'T USUALLY KNOW?
When I was younger, I wasn't the biggest fan of
school, at least not the scholastic part. When I
completed my bachelor's degree, I told myself
I was done with school forever. Later in life, I
returned to school and became the first in my
family to earn a graduate degree, enjoying every
part of it. In graduate school, I finally found
something I loved to learn about, and it changed
the trajectory of my life and professional career.
This was a lesson on the importance for each
of us to ‘find our thing,’ which helps inspire my
work with students today as a college counselor.
WHAT'S A SMALL GESTURE THAT INSTANTLY WINS
YOU OVER?
When people acknowledge the cleaning/help
staff with the same respect and courtesy that
they treat the manager. Acknowledgement and
showing appreciation are sexy.
WHAT'S SOMETHING THAT MADE YOU SMILE
RECENTLY?
My dad (77 years old) was present to see my first
win as a college head coach and told me he was
proud of me. It was a full circle moment, as he
was my first basketball coach when I started
playing at the age of five.
WHEN ARE YOU THE HAPPIEST?
When I'm present, not worrying about things
out of my control—something that's easier said
than done. Also eating good food (y'all noticing
a theme?!) and discovering new things with
someone I can be myself around.
WHAT SONG SUMS UP YOUR DATING ENERGY
RIGHT NOW?
“Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson.
WHAT'S SOMETHING EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW
BEFORE DATING YOU?
I ALWAYS have music on, and it's probably
going to be old-school R&B music that came
out a long time ago. Also, I'm really not as
grumpy as my ‘resting b face’ may indicate!

It’s the little things: remembering details
I’ve mentioned and mentioning them
later, or simple gestures like holding the
door (chivalry isn’t dead).
WHAT'S SOMETHING THAT MADE YOU
SMILE RECENTLY?
One of my students, new to speaking
English, sweetly said, “Thank you for
learning me English.” It’s moments like
these that make teaching so rewarding.
I’m still smiling about it.

Spotlight on
Jaya Perryman
by JENNIFER MARAGONI
They say one person’s trash is another
person’s treasure. And Auburn-based
artist Jaya Perryman makes sure
of it by creating works of art from
discarded items.
Perryman simply wants to show the
“beauty of everyday things,” she explains.
She’s also aware that her art doesn’t
appeal to everyone—and is fine with that.
“One of my wife’s old friends walked into
my studio and said, ‘Well, I guess beauty
is in the eye of the beholder,’” she recalls
with a laugh. “I didn’t care.”
Perryman majored in studio art
in college, but pursued other careers
before rediscovering her passion for art
a few years ago.
“When I was younger, I don’t think I
had the strength to trust my instincts or
the process,” she explains. “But now I feel
so free. This whole thing I’ve been doing
is just so organic. My goal is to be selfactualized
in my art.”
Perryman shares her art on
her website (seejaya.com) and by
participating in local events, including
the annual Placer Artists Tour. When
she isn’t making art, she enjoys
walking her dog, hanging out with
friends, and playing ping-pong. A selfdescribed
“ranch queen,” she keeps
busy tending to her menagerie of
animals—the aforementioned dog,
a cat, chickens, and donkeys—and
staying active as a member of the
Placer County community.
“It’s important for me to give back
to the community that supports me,”
she says. “I like to donate some of my
proceeds to the Unity for Equality
endowment that my wife, Sue, and
I started at the Placer Community

Foundation. I also donate to the SYDA
Foundation, my spiritual practice.”
What reignited your passion for art?
Everything I have done previously
definitely informs what I do today. I
think there has been an ‘art reel’ that
has always been playing on a deeper
level throughout my life and now it is
manifest. I started making art again
during the pandemic; I was so pent
up and had to have a release. I looked
around at what I had to work with,
and it was a bunch of cardboard,
plastic, boxes, and trash. That’s what
I started with. My first collection was
called Trashportation.
Do you have any favorite materials?
Right now, I am fascinated by steel
wool and window screen. By the time
this is published, I will probably
be onto something else. Different
materials seem to come into my
life. When we took down the metal
flashing in the chicken coop, I saw
beautiful patterns. When someone
brings me some window screen
or some great cardboard, I see
possibilities.
Are there any materials that are
particularly fun—or challenging—to
work with?
Magnets and steel shavings are very
cool and tricky to work with. My
neighbor with a metal shop let me pick
up some shavings off his shop floor.
Collabortion with Vermin
Do you incorporate traditional art
mediums as well?
Yes. I incorporate acrylic paint, gesso,
and other mediums into my pieces.
Where do you find your inspiration?
By observing closely and meditating.
My friends drop off interesting
Navigating
Reposed
materials, too. Our friend was
hardening our chicken coop after an
incursion by a predator and pulled off
the old metal flashing. He was going to
throw it away, but when I really looked
at it, I saw the beautiful patterns the
rats had chewed in it. It became the
basis for one of my favorite pieces:
Collaboration with Vermin.
Tell me about your process.
I may have a general idea, but I always
let the art take me where it goes. I feel
like I am guided. For several years after
I retired from being a chiropractor and
acupuncturist, I studied jazz guitar.
Sometimes when I am really in my
flow, I feel like I’m composing music—
the rhythm, tempo, color, and space all
influence what I do.
What do you hope to communicate
through your art?
I hope to provide an opportunity for
the viewer to use their own imagination
and see things in a different way. My
work is really a mirror. People see
what they are projecting on it, like a
Rorschach [inkblot test]. I am constantly
surprised, entertained, and amused
by people’s interpretations. There is so
much beauty in everyday things—so
many different juxtapositions and
combinations. I want people to see the
‘art’ in their surroundings and in the
things they use.
What is the best compliment you can
receive about your art?
When someone says they get it.
Artwork images courtesy of Jaya Perryman.

RAISING HAPPY, HEALTHY KIDS
We live in a world where information is at our fingertips, and parenting can
feel overwhelmingly complicated. Yet, amid the countless tips, techniques, and
recommendations, one truth stands out: the foundation of parenting rests on
structure and empathy. We spoke with local mental and physical health experts
to gather their top strategies for raising kids who thrive into adulthood. These
are simple, practical steps that every family can implement at their own pace—
building a strong foundation and creating lasting impact for children.
TABLE TIME MATTERS
One of the most recommended ways to raise a well-adjusted child is to eat
meals together. “For kids, eating with family improves nutrient intake, decreases
emotional eating, and promotes healthier weight. Teens who eat more often
with their families have less disordered eating, alcohol or substance use, and
depression. For parents or adult caregivers, family meals were associated with
higher family functioning and self-esteem and lower depressive symptoms
and stress in many studies,” explains
Heather Overman, MD, at Marshall
(marshallmedical.org). Even if you’re
a busy family, eating together just
three times a week shows significant
benefits. And for those picky eaters?
Chelsea Mills, MD, at Dignity Health
Mercy Medical Group (dignityhealth.
org) suggests getting kids involved and
making it fun. “Let kids wash veggies or
choose fruits at the store for hands-on
learning and increased exposure. Cut
fruits into fun shapes, create colorful
platters, or give veggies silly names to
spark their interest.”

CONSISTENCY COUNTS
Routines are also a great way for children
to feel comfortable. “Children thrive when
they know what to expect. Consistent
schedules and clear expectations help
them feel secure and supported. Aim
for regular sleep and mealtimes and
include active play, such as sports or
other extracurricular activities,” shares
Lena van der List, DO, at UC Davis Medical
Group (health.ucdavis.edu).
Top photo © Allistair F/peopleimages.com - stock.adobe.com. Middle photo by Taylor Allred ©stylereadersmedia. Bottom photo © kieferpix - stock.adobe.com.
SNOOZE OR LOSE
Regular sleep equates to quality sleep.
“As you’re about to finish the day, it helps
to wind down the noise and lights, turn
off electronics, and [begin the bedtime
routine], to ensure your child receives
the recommended hours of sleep for
their age,” says Overman. Nancy Ryan,
MA, LMFT, CEO of Relationship Therapy
Center (therelationshiptherapycenter.
com) agrees and warns against the toll
of sleep debt. “Over [time], insufficient
sleep contributes to lower academic
performance, increased school
avoidance, and friction with peers. It also
takes a toll on mental health, increasing
anxiety, depressed mood, and general
stress sensitivity.” Not to mention more
tantrums and compromised immune
systems, especially in young children.
CALM THE CHAOS
Speaking of tantrums, although
inevitable, they can be managed with
proper reactions from parents and
caregivers. Parenting is tiring and can
cause quick reactions, but it’s imperative
to remember children have a wide
range of emotions that they don’t fully
know how to manage. “When a child
is behaving in a problematic way,
like hitting or yelling, the first step is
to empathize with them and name
the emotion. This helps kids develop
emotional awareness, which is vital for
developing effective self-regulation. Pair
this with management strategies for
the unwanted behavior to help redirect
them into something more appropriate,”
explains Audrey Schoen, LMFT
(audreylmft.com). Showing empathy
won’t stop them from feeling upset,
but it will make a connection of feeling
understood and can help [the child]
express themselves properly.
BE A GUIDING LIGHT
Emotional connection begins early but
takes continuous effort as kids grow.
Ariel Sonenstein, founder of Ariel Jolie
Coaching (arieljoliecoaching.com),
advises parents to be a guide, not a
guru. “Teens shut down when they feel
‘fixed.’ Instead of giving answers, guide
them to their own. Swap ‘You should…’
with ‘What do you think would help?’
This turns advice into collaboration,
builds confidence, and teaches teens to
trust their judgment, which is far more
empowering than a lecture.” Advising
children to guide themselves can
strengthen their mindset in all aspects of
life, including school and relationships.
“You’re not telling them what to think,
you’re inviting them to notice their
thought, decide if it’s purposeful, and
evaluate if the thought is serving them.”
INTENTIONAL CONNECTIONS
Beyond emotional connection,
purposeful interactions go a long way in
teaching children that they’re important
and deserve to take up space. Spending
just 10 minutes a day in uninterrupted
play will strengthen your bond. “During
this time, let your child take the lead—
they are play experts! Follow their
imagination, whether it involves toys,
crafts, or make-believe,” shares van der
List. As kids grow, this one-on-one time
will look different. “Stay curious and
engaged. If your teen wants to learn
electric guitar, maybe join them for
their first heavy metal concert (earplugs
recommended!). If your child loves
theater, help them rehearse for auditions.”
Children will naturally seek out more
independence as they grow but knowing
that their foundation at home is strong
and welcoming will give them the unique
support and love they need.

Take a Hike
Coast Trail to Bass Lake
by RYAN MARTINEZ
LOCATION:
Bolinas.
DISTANCE:
6 miles out and back.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Moderate.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
Located within Point Reyes
National Seashore, this trail offers
a rewarding mix of sweeping
ocean views and peaceful forest
scenery. The mingling scents of
eucalyptus and ocean spray never
get old. In spring, the trail is dotted
with abundant wildflowers, and on
warm days, Bass Lake provides a
refreshing place to cool off.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
Coastal weather can change quickly,
making some sections slippery—
especially on rocky terrain—so
dress in layers and wear shoes with
good traction; trekking poles can
also be helpful. Pants are advised,
as parts of the trail can be difficult
to navigate due to overgrowth.
Dogs are not allowed. As always,
remember to leave no trace.
FUEL UP:
Rumored to be the
oldest continually
operating saloon
on the West Coast,
Smiley’s Saloon
(smileyssaloon.
com) is a beloved
cornerstone of the
Bolinas community.
The food—made with
high-quality, organic,
non-GMO, and local
ingredients—is
inspired by Marin
County’s Hispanic roots
and pairs perfectly with
a margarita, live music, and
the satisfaction of a beautiful
hike. Want to make a night of it?
Smiley’s seven-room hotel is ideal
for unplugging and unwinding
after a day in nature.

ABOUT
BOLINAS
Bolinas boasts a
quaint, quirky vibe
that makes it a
perfect out-of-thebox
day trip. With
a more bohemian,
back-to-the-roots
feel than much of
the Bay Area, it's
easy to see why
artists, surfers,
and even the
occasional hermit
have long found
sanctuary here.
If surfing is on your
agenda, you’re in
luck—but proceed
with caution.
The channel can
create strong
rip currents that
require experience
to navigate, and
locals occasionally
report great
white sightings.
Swimmers, take
note.
For those seeking

charming

for disconnecting

At Merryhill School Roseville, education is designed to shape confident learners

environment where academics, character, and community connection work together to
create meaningful learning experiences.
A hallmark of the campus is its student-led, compassion-driven culture. Through an
active Student Council, students across grade levels are empowered to represent their
peers and lead service initiatives that make a real impact. From supporting the Placer
SPCA to organizing holiday donations for foster families and participating in the Kids
Heart Challenge, students learn that leadership begins with empathy and action.
Academically, Merryhill School builds a strong foundation starting in its proprietary
preschool program, where learning and play are thoughtfully balanced to spark
curiosity and confidence. As students grow, engaging instruction, communityconnected
field trips, and enriching clubs such as art, technology, and sports encourage
creativity, collaboration, and skill development beyond the classroom. Further, as
an Apple Distinguished School, classes integrate technology in purposeful ways. For
example, during trimester Student-Led Conferences, students take ownership of their

Tooth Truth
A growing trend in pediatric dentistry
is the use of preventative treatment
options—most notably Silver Diamine
Fluoride (SDF). This liquid is applied to
small cavities with the goal of slowing or
even stopping decay. The application
is quick, and we’ve seen it be highly
effective. SDF can be especially
beneficial for younger patients or
children who feel anxious and may not
tolerate traditional dental treatments.
Even in cases where decay continues to
progress slowly, SDF can buy valuable
time until a child is older and more
comfortable undergoing treatment.
It may also help reduce the need for
general anesthesia in some cases. While
SDF is used on a case-by-case basis and
isn’t effective for larger cavities, it can be
an excellent option in certain situations.

Q: WHAT IS A DRYING CAGE AND
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
A: A drying cage is an enclosed kennel
designed to safely dry dogs using
gentle, circulating warm air after
bathing. Unlike high-velocity dryers,
drying cages provide a quieter, lowstress
environment, making them
especially beneficial for dogs that are
anxious, noise-sensitive, or fearful
of force dryers. They are also wellsuited
for senior dogs or pups with
medical conditions who may be prone
to soreness, fatigue, or injury from
prolonged standing or the pressure
of a high-velocity dryer. When used
correctly, drying cages allow dogs
to rest comfortably while drying
evenly, reducing physical strain
on both the dog and the groomer.
However, they should never be used
as a “set it and forget it” tool. Dogs
must always be monitored closely,
with proper temperature settings and
time limits, to ensure safety, comfort,
and humane care throughout the
grooming process.

Create Make & Mingle
AMY PELZNER
418 East Bidwell Street, Folsom, 916-500-4583,
createmakeandmingle.com @createmakeandmingle
Services or products you offer: Hands-on workshops in
sign painting, resin art, and jewelry making, plus Cricut
classes, seasonal projects, private parties, and take-home
kits—all in a cozy studio. It’s the perfect spot for a girls’ night
out, date night, or some creative “me time!”
What you enjoy most about your profession: Getting
to know people in our community and sharing creative
experiences with them. The best part is seeing the pride and
excitement on someone’s face when they finish a project
and realize, ‘I made this myself!’
You started your business, because: I wanted to create a
welcoming, creative space for women of all ages. I spent the
past 10 years working as a content creator and blogger, but
with AI changing that world, I wanted a new path. Since I
already had the tools and experience teaching others online,
I decided to bring it in-person—especially because I believe
women are still craving connection and creativity in the
wake of the pandemic.
First job: In high school, I worked at Four Star Pizza
in Folsom, which used to be next to the DMV. My first
professional job was as an optometrist at Dr. Robert
Hoffman’s office, also in Folsom.
Favorite foods: A classic burger or delicious Thai food.
Favorite local restaurants: When it comes to takeout, I
usually go to Habit Burger & Grill or Dos Coyotes. For a
sit-down meal, my favorites are Bacchus House Wine, Bar &
Bistro and Land Ocean.
Last big purchase: A massive laser-cutting machine.
Favorite small business: Ruby’s Books! The owner, Stacy, has
done an incredible job with the space, and there’s nothing
better than being surrounded by books.
When not working, you can be found: Spending time with
my family and friends, reading, cuddling with my two rescue
dogs, or playing games on my phone.
You love living here, because: The family-friendly
atmosphere and all the fun community events and activities
can’t be beat; being close to Tahoe is also a huge bonus!

Cool, Calm,
Collected
A LUXURIOUS REDESIGN
ROOTED IN NATURE
by EMILY PETER-COREY
Originally a semi-custom home built in
the ’90s, this El Dorado Hills residence
has been thoughtfully refreshed to
better highlight the beauty of its
surrounding nature, thanks to Lindsay
Olson of Lulu Designs (luludesigns.
com). While the home’s bones were
solid, the interiors reflected their era,
with compartmentalized spaces, heavy
finishes, and a muted tan-and-brown
palette that felt disconnected from the
sweeping views outside. The new plans
included a complete redesign of the
primary living spaces, kitchen, bedrooms,
baths, and outdoor areas, along with
updates throughout to bring warmth,
cohesion, and a stronger indoor-outdoor
connection to the home.
Working on the 6,000-square-foot
home was a hefty task, but with the
trust built between the homeowner and
designer, it became a seamless ninemonth
transformation. “This was one
of those rare projects where creative
freedom and trust aligned perfectly. The
home’s setting and views guided nearly
every decision, allowing the design to feel
organic and grounded,” explains Olson.
Before the renovation, the home was
defined by dark wood cabinetry, ornate
detailing, and a Mediterranean-inspired
aesthetic that felt heavy and dated. The

spaces were visually busy, with little
contrast and limited natural light reaching
the interiors. Today, the home embraces
a softer, more modern approach, layered
with neutrals, natural textures, and a few
dramatic moments—most notably the
color-drenched kitchen.
Once dominated by rich, brown
finishes, the kitchen now features sky-blue
cabinetry that makes a bold statement
while visually lifting the space. The color
naturally draws the eye toward the dining
nook, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows
and oversized furniture, creating an
inviting setting for lingering conversations
over a bottle of wine pulled from the
custom wine cellar. Natural stone surfaces
and refined hardware further elevate the
kitchen, exemplifying the transitional
Spanish style seen throughout the home.
That same striking blue reappears in
the primary bathroom, transforming what
was once a standard, earth-toned space
into a serene retreat. Marble counters with
pronounced veining add movement and
elegance, while large yet delicate lighting
fixtures balance sophistication with
comfort. The result is a space that feels
luxurious without sacrificing livability.
Finding that balance between
refinement and approachability proved
to be the project’s biggest challenge. “The
client has impeccable taste and expected
the highest level of quality, but the home
needed to feel relaxed and welcoming
rather than precious,” Olson shares. That
philosophy guided every decision, from
finishes to furnishings, and required
restraint as much as creativity. This softer
approach to luxury is evident in the
nature-inspired palette, layered neutrals,
and subtle tonal shifts throughout the
home. While each room features standout
pieces, nothing overwhelms. “There’s also
a strong emphasis on texture over pattern,
and on pieces that feel collected rather
than overly designed,” says Olson.
Each bedroom reflects this
philosophy, showcasing complementary
artwork and furnishings that enhance
the home’s collected, curated feel.
Varying earth tones and organic
textures create sanctuaries where both
mind and body can settle and relax.
One bedroom features a large wicker
pendant light, while another introduces a
striking wood-and-marble fireplace—an
intentional mix of natural materials that
feels cohesive rather than contrived.
The living room strikes a careful
balance between visual interest and
comfort. Where heavy finishes once
dominated, the refreshed space now
invites the eye to move effortlessly
between a thoughtfully curated gallery
wall, an organic light fixture, and the
breathtaking views of Folsom Lake
beyond. “The design team used the
natural landscape as the primary palette
for the main rooms, creating a seamless
connection between the interior and the
stunning vistas,” Olson explains.
Outdoors, the transformation
continues. Raised garden beds now soak
up the sunshine, replacing previously
underutilized areas with spaces that feel
both functional and calming. Natural
stonework and a water feature elevate
the outdoor areas while reinforcing the
home’s transitional Spanish style and
sense of accessible luxury. “The client
loves how effortless the home feels,” Olson
says. “Nothing feels overworked, yet every
detail feels intentional. The way spaces
flow together, and how naturally the
house connects to its surroundings, are
especially meaningful to him.”
“The goal was never to overhaul
for the sake of change, but to elevate
what was already there and make the
home feel timeless, livable, and deeply
connected to its surroundings,” Olson
adds. It’s a perfect example of how
restraint can be incredibly impactful. By
editing rather than overdesigning, the
home now feels balanced, collected, and
serene, creating a peaceful retreat for
both the homeowner and guests.
For those considering a similar project,
Olson offers simple advice rooted in trust
and collaboration: “Trust the process and
allow your designer to push you just a
bit outside your comfort zone. The best
results come when there’s mutual trust
and a shared vision. It’s also important to
focus on how a home should feel, not just
how it looks. When the foundation is clear,
every decision becomes easier.”

EATS & DRINKS
Shady Coffee & Tea is the kind
of throwback neighborhood coffee
shop that everyone says no longer
exists, but guess what: they’re right here!
Better still, they’re the low-key go-to for
chocoholics, thanks to their sorcery
with mochas (available hot or iced and
often with fun seasonal flavors). But
they also make a deliciously classic hot
chocolate, and for those in the know, the
Dessert Hot Chocolate—made with
high-quality sipping chocolate and quite
literally melted chocolate in a mug—is the
definition of “a little treat.” They also have
a cute “Hobbit hole” seating area for you
to sip said treat, should we need to entice
you further. 325 Douglas Boulevard,

Hot take: Mexico and South America
understand chocolate in a way that
exceeds the rest of us mere mortals.
The way their cuisine effortlessly
incorporates chocolate into savory dishes
with the addition of spices is unique and
extraordinary. And delicious. Take mole,
for example. Nixtaco turns every dish
into a flavorful labor of love, and their
mole is no exception, with layers of spice,
a hint of cocoa, and deep, savory, soulful
flavor. Try it in their Braised Chicken
Mole Taco—tender shredded roasted
chicken simmered in delicious housemade
mole with crema and toasted black
sesame seeds on top—and thank me later.

interpretations of that theme. The dessert
menu is, well, how best to describe it?
You know that Italian thing where you

Visconti’s Chocolate Truffle is no joke:
a zabaglione cream center, surrounded

Bella Maci is one of the newest
restaurant gems on Folsom’s Sutter
Street, born from the creative vision of
the former owner of Marly and Moo.
This modern, Italian-inspired eatery
blends rustic “old country” authenticity
with contemporary vibes, creating an
atmosphere that feels both classy and
welcoming. The menu celebrates
classic Italian flavors, but dessert
is where Bella Maci truly shines. While
traditional favorites tike tiramisu and
cannoli grace the list, the undisputed
star for chocolate devotees is their
swoon-worthy Chocolate Cheesecake:

spark to pursue distilling. Inspired by
tradition and a deep connection to place,
the distillery was built on the ethos
that “you can take the whiskey out of
the Sierra Nevada foothills, but you
can’t take the Sierra Nevada foothills
out of the whiskey.” Since its inception,
Dry Diggings has expanded to produce
more than two dozen distinct labels. For
those who visited in the early days—
when tastings were limited to a simple
1.5-ounce pour—much has evolved.
The cocktail menu, crafted by Hills’
talented mixology team, strikes a thoughtful
balance between reverence and reinvention.
Both classic and signature cocktails pay
homage to tradition while embracing a
spirit of innovation that underpins Hills’
philosophy. As a self-proclaimed whiskey
purist, I’m pleased to report that their Old

restrained, and beautifully executed. The

Stepping into Hills at Dry Diggings Distillery
feels like entering a living saloon—one where
past and present quietly collide. Tucked inside an
unsuspecting office complex in El Dorado Hills,
the experience is anything but gimmicky. Instead,
it’s deliberately curated, rooted in a genuine love of
California history, local heritage, and a deep respect
for craft. Weathered wood, red velvet curtains,
and warm brass details come together to create
an ambiance that is both comforting and refined,
echoing the whispers of another era.
At the foundation of what feels poised to
become one of the region’s most beloved watering
holes are the spirits themselves. Dry Diggings was

I’ve had, while the Portobello Fries—
marinated mushrooms breaded in herbs
and parmesan, fried until crisp, and
served with green goddess dressing—have
officially become my go-to starter.
Though the menu is subject to
change based on availability and will
rotate seasonally, the Steak Sandwich
perfectly captured the hearty, rustic
soul of Dry Diggings. Layered with
roasted red peppers, arugula, shallots,
caper aioli, smoked provolone, and
herb gremolata on a French baguette,
it was deeply satisfying without feeling
heavy. The pan-seared Asian seabass
(or, as the menu charmingly notes,
“Oohhhh, Barramundi”) offered a
thoughtful counterpoint—bright,
fresh, and earthy—bridging Old World
sensibilities with modern California
techniques using both citrus and
legumes. Overall, the menu leaned
into nostalgia without ever feeling
dated, a balance that’s notoriously
difficult to strike.
The evening concluded with a slice
of their Ricotta Cheesecake. Indulgent
yet restrained, it was a thoughtfully
composed dessert and the perfect final
note to the meal.
Ultimately, the experience at Hills
is more than just a meal—it’s a small
jaunt through history. Yet one element
outshone the food, the cocktails,
and even the ambiance: the sense of
belonging. Dry Diggings is familyowned,
with each of the Steller children
playing a foundational role in the
Chicken Pappardelle
business, and both the manager and chef
sharing a lifelong friendship that predates
the restaurant itself. That deep-rooted
connection—to each other, to the region,
and to their guests—is
palpable throughout
the space. If the food
and cocktails don’t
bring me back (and
they absolutely will),
the warmth and
community they’ve
created certainly will.

Love Bites
Romantic

What’s your idea of
a romantic dinner?
Is it Belle and the Beast
waltzing beneath a chandelier in Beauty and
the Beast, or Mia Wallace and Vince Vega
trading flirtatious glances over $5 milkshakes
at Jack Rabbit Slim’s in Pulp Fiction?
Romance, after all, is about intent—when it’s
done with love, any dinner can feel magical.
Luckily, we’ve rounded up the region’s most
swoon-worthy spots for romantic rendezvous
par excellence. Bon appétit.
For an experience, as well as a romantic dinner, Flame
& Fire Brazilian Steakhouse is top of the list.
Enjoy their all-you-can-eat Rodizio service, where
skewers of sizzling, perfectly seasoned meats
are paraded to your table until you wave the
white flag. We’re talking juicy beef, tender lamb,
smoky pork, and chicken carved right in front of
you—perfect for a date night that’s fun and a little
adventurous. Pair your proteins with their “Market
Table”—loaded with fresh salads, Brazilian specialties, and
imported cheeses—and a few craft cocktails, and now your
date is an official feast. Pro tip: bring your appetite, and
pace yourself! 963 Pleasant Grove Boulevard, Suite 100,
Roseville, 916-790-5750, flameandfire.com
RESTAURANTS
Hawks is the perfect quiet
spot for foodies in love. Settle in
for an intimate evening of elegance
without pretension: mood lighting, polished service,
and a creative menu that speaks directly to foodie
hearts. Kick things off with the Hawks Negroni,
a creative twist on a classic featuring whisky and
brandy, Cocchi Americano, lemon, pear, cardamom,
tarragon, and whey, topped with a honey vanilla
foam. (Yes, it’s as dreamy as it sounds.) For dinner,
the Slow Roasted Short Rib Bourguignon is a
guaranteed showstopper: tender, slow-roasted
short rib with pommes purées, Thumbelina carrots,
bacon, and a rich red wine jus. You’ll linger over
every bite. 5530 Douglas Boulevard, Suite 110,

Headed out with your Prince
Charming or Princess Jasmine?
Step into a fairy tale at
Enchanted Forest Dining
Experience, full of whimsical
vibes straight out of a storybook.
A Forest Flight of Mead is a
must, and the Full Enchantment
Fondue Experience is, indeed, an
experience. It begins with a Hobbit House
Salad, followed by gooey cheese fondue,
where you’ll cozy up and dip everything
from fresh veggies to apples, pretzels, and
sourdough bread; when the main course
arrives, expect skewers of tender filet
mignon, succulent chicken, giant prawns,
even meatballs, all cooked tableside; and
there’s a happy ending, too: rich chocolate
fondue that’s sweet, decadent, and
perfect for sharing. Add live Irish music
to the mix and you’ve got a date night
that’s bound to end happily ever after. 372

For dinner with a side of modern
elegance, Sienna undoubtedly
delivers. With just the right kind of
mood lighting, stylish décor, and
attentive service, it gives “special”
minus the “stuffy.” Kick things off
sweetly with a Watermelon Basil
Martini, a refreshing mix of basilinfused
vodka, fresh watermelon,
and house-made sweet and sour. For
dinner, the Sparkling Salmon is a
standout: honey-nut crusted, drizzled
with a sparkling wine sauce, and
served atop smashed red potatoes and
crisp green beans. It’s rich, flavorful,
and plated beautifully; in other words,
ideal for sharing bites across the table
and making lasting culinary memories
together. 1006 White Rock Road, Suite

Whisk your paramour
away on a romantic Italian
escape—all without leaving
El Dorado Hills: destination
Vacanza Romana. This
little slice of Rome is cozy and
perfect for lingering over wine and
conversation. Their handmade pastas
are a must, as is the Garlic-Crusted
Lamb Chop, featuring a pistachio-herb
coating, potato crema, and bone marrow
gremolata. Rich, savory, and subtly sweet,
it’s the kind of dish that begs for bites and
a bottle of wine to be shared. End your
evening on a sweet note; the desserts
here are both delicate and delicious. 2023

For a date night spot that
oozes romance, Bacchus
House Wine, Bar & Bistro
is the perfect setting for cozy
elegance (and live music—most
Friday and Saturday nights!)
that sets the mood just right.
Linger over a glass of wine and
feel like you’ve stepped into a
classic romantic movie. Menuwise,
don’t miss their Fresh Day
Boat Scallops, pan-seared to
perfection and served on a bed of
risotto, finished with Meyer lemon
beurre blanc and organic micro
greens. Pair all of that with their
signature Aphrodite cocktail:
raspberry vodka, Chambord,
lemon juice, and a sugar rim for
a little extra romance in your
glass. 1004 East Bidwell Street,

If you’re seeking a livelier vibe along with
above-average food and service, The
Independent is a great choice for a romantic
evening out. It’s stylish yet relaxed and upbeat
enough to keep things feeling fun without being
noisy or chaotic. Their peaceful patio—complete
with a fireplace and water features—is perfect
for couples who prefer to dine en plein air.
Start with their signature cocktail, the Room
Key: a classy mix of Aperol, Campari, fresh
lemon, Tahitian vanilla syrup, egg white, and a
sparkling float. Bright and bold, it’s perfect for
toasting your night together and the ideal
opening act to your meal’s headliner:
the Certified Hereford Filet Mignon.
Seared to perfection, this beauty is
topped with roasted garlic and herb
compound butter and served with
seasonal veggies plus your choice
of side (hello, truffle mac & cheese!).

I don’t know about you, but rustic charm is
my love language, especially when paired
with small-town foothill friendliness.
Smith Flat House is full of character
with its cozy, Gold Rush-inspired ambiance.
(I mean, the restaurant is a converted
mineshaft, after all.) Many have faked
this kind of ambiance, but Smith Flat has
the receipts! They’re not putting on airs;
here you can sit back, relax, and enjoy an
amorous evening in a charming setting.
Their 16 oz. Lamb Shank is the true star of
the menu, braised for eight hours until it’s
fall-off-the-bone tender, served with wild
mushroom marsala, roasted garlic mashed
potatoes, and butter wine-poached
broccolini. Pair it with a glass of local wine
and settle in for an evening of romance
with a heavenly dose of flavor. 2021 Smith

of a no-body homicide
case. Her remains were
not recovered until
2020. Living through
that experience
gave me a firsthand
understanding of what
unresolved cases do
to families, and how
life-changing it is
when answers are finally found. The Placer County Cold Case
Foundation stands out because it doesn’t just care—it acts.
Supporting this work feels like honoring my daughter’s legacy
while helping other families find the answers they deserve.
The Placer County Cold Case Foundation (PCCCF) works
to resolve unsolved homicides, identify unknown remains,
and locate missing persons throughout Placer County. The
nonprofit supports law enforcement by funding advanced
forensic tools—such as DNA analysis and investigative genetic
genealogy—helping move long-stalled cases forward. While
Placer County Sheriff Wayne Woo has long prioritized cold
case investigations, limited resources and budget constraints
have slowed progress. The rising cost of forensic testing and
time-intensive casework created a critical funding gap the
PCCCF was formed to address. As fundraising efforts begin,
members of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case
Investigations Unit are newly energized to pursue justice and
closure. Even amid current budget limitations, investigators
identified three individuals in 2025, providing long-awaited
answers to victims’ families.

What do your volunteer duties entail? As Secretary of
the Board, my role includes supporting board governance,
maintaining records and meeting documentation, and helping
ensure the foundation operates with transparency and
accountability. I also contribute strategically by sharing insights
gained from my lived experience as a family member in a
long-term cold case, helping the board stay grounded in the
real human impact behind every case we support. In addition,
I assist with outreach, education, and advocacy efforts—
helping communicate the importance of cold case work to the
community, donors, and law enforcement partners.
Is there training required?
Yes, there is onboarding and orientation specific to the
foundation’s mission, ethics, and governance responsibilities.
Because of the sensitive nature of cold cases, confidentiality,
professionalism, and respect for victims and families are
paramount. Board members also work closely with law
enforcement, so understanding those boundaries is essential.
What’s the time commitment?
It varies but is manageable. For me, it includes regular board
meetings, preparation time, and occasional involvement in
events, outreach, or special initiatives. Like many nonprofit
roles, there are times when engagement increases, but the
work is meaningful and well worth the time invested.
What’s been the best day of volunteering so far?
The most meaningful moments are when we can help fund
a case and know that new forensic testing or investigative
work is moving forward. Knowing that a family may finally get
answers—after years or even decades of waiting—is incredibly
powerful. Those moments reaffirm why this foundation exists.
What’s one of the biggest challenges?
Knowing that there are more cases than available resources.
Advances in forensic science are extraordinary, but they
come at a substantial cost. The need is great, and ensuring
sustainable funding so no case is left behind is an ongoing
challenge. That’s also what motivates us—to continue building
awareness and community support so more families can
receive the answers they deserve.
