August 2015Fifty years ago, on 23 February1976, the artist L S Lowry died ofpneumonia.He was known primarily for hisbleak industrial landscapes ofnorth-west England, populatedwith matchstick men, but he alsopainted original and strikingseascapes and impressive portraits.Laurence Stephen Lowry wasborn on 1 November 1887 inStretford.SUNDAY SCHOOLHis father worked for anestate agent and his mother wasan organist, playing at the localchurch.Laurence went to Sundayschool, but as life later turneddifficult, his faith became shadowy.After leaving school he becamea rent collector for the Pall MallProperty Company and stayedthere until his retirement in 1952.This led to some dismissing him asa ‘Sunday painter’.TRIED HARDLowry’s life was restricted by hisfamily debts and his mother, forwhom he took responsibility afterhis father died.He tried hard to please her, butshe showed no appreciation for thequality of his art, looking insteadfor a middle-class respectable life.He became a solitary figure andnever married.Lowry remains popular as anartist, with many imitators, but henever formally taught or gatheredGors4730, Dreamstime.coma group of followers around him.He holds the record for rejectingBritish honours —five, including aknighthood (1968).A collection of his work ison display at The Lowry, animpressive purpose-built artgallery on Salford Quays.During his life he made about1,000 paintings and over 8,000drawings. His works often sell formillions of pounds.BURIEDBuried in Manchester next tohis parents, he left an estate valuedat £298,459, plus artwork, to CarolAnn Lowry (no relation), whosefamily he befriended when she was13, after she asked for help withher own development as an artist.
