PARisH NOTICEBOARD — 2CandlemasThe Presentation of ChristIn past centuries, the 40 daysof the Christmas season endedon Candlemas which falls on thesecond day of February.In New Testament times 40 daysafter the birth of a boy marked animportant day for the child.It was when the baby made itsfirst ‘public appearance'.Consequently, Mary, like all goodJewish mothers, went to the Templewith Jesus, her first male child inorder to ‘present him to the Lord’. Atthe same time, as a new mother, shewould be ‘purified’.THE LIGHTThus, this month the ChristianChurch celebrates with the Festivalof the Presentation of Christ in theTemple which in modern times isknown as Candlemas, a term whichgets its name because in the NewTestament Jesus is described as theLight of the World.At the early celebrations manyChristians developed a tradition ofmarking the day by lighting largenumbers of candles.The Church also fell into acustom of blessing the year’s supplyof candles for the church on thisday, hence Candlemas.NUNC DIMITTISThe story of how Candlemasbegan can be found in the Gospel ofLuke 2:22-40.Simeon’s great declaration offaith and recognition of who Jesuswas is of course found in the NuncDimittis, which is embedded in theOffice of Evening Prayer in the West.But in medieval times, NuncDimittis was only used on this dayduring the distribution of candlesbefore the Eucharist. Gradually itbecame part of the daily prayer lifeof the Church.The Nunc Dimittis, which is alsoknown as the Song of Simeon, is acanticle taken from the Gospel ofLuke, 2: 29-32.Its Latin name came from theopening words, of the Vulgatetranslation of the passage, meaning'Now you let depart'.The Parish Magazine — February 2026 7How to make your ChristingleYou will need:— a responsible adult to help you!— one orange— one candle— four cocktail sticks— red ribbon— dried fruit or sweets— a pin to hold the ribbon in place— a small piece of aluminium foil— scissorsAsk an adult to cut a thin slice offthe bottom of the orange so that itstands firmly on a flat surface, and tomake a hole in the top of the orangelarge enough for the candle, but don'tpush the candle into the hole yetWrap the ribbon around the middleof the orange and fix it in positionwith the pin.Cut the aluminium foil withthe scissors to cover the top of theorange and press the foil into thehole so that it makes a small saucerto catch any candle wax that drips offwhen the Christingle is lit.Push the candle into the top ofthe orange where the foil is and makesure that it is held firmly in place.DO NOT LIGHT THE CANDLE YET!Put the dried fruit or yourfavourite sweets on three of thecocktail sticks and leave the fourthone empty!Push the cocktail sticks into theorange so that your Christingle lookslike the one in the picture above butDO NOT LIGHT THE CANDLE YET!FOR YOUR PRAYERSDURING FEBRUARY . . .— The Children's Society— The new Archbishop of Canterbury— Plans for our new Youth Charity— Christians in IranBring your unlit Christingle tothe Family Service at St Andrew'sChurch at 10.30am on Sunday1 February and it will be lit for you.After the service you can eat thesweets and fruit!This is what your Christingle means:— The orange represents the worldthat God created for us all to enjoy.— The red ribbon indicates the loveand blood of Christ.— The dried fruits and sweets aresymbols of the fruits of the earthGod created for us all.— The four sticks represent all thepeople of the earth— The lit candle is Jesus, the lightof the world, who shines in even thedarkest corners of our lives.Naturablichter, Dreamstime.com
