The evicted patron putting the sign into an unsuspecting Uber driver’s car.
From the Ed Sheeran concert
to The Miller Bar to Facebook
BY GEOFF SLOAN
Security camera footage of a
patron ejected from a bar and
taking off with the establishment’s
footpath sign in an Uber
has been viewed more than
41,000 times on Facebook.
Bar owner Michelle Cattell
told The Star on Tuesday she
was undecided if she would
agree to pleas from the woman
and her husband to take the
footage down.
The woman and her husband
had been at the Ed Sheeran concert
before going to The Miller
Bar on Lincoln Rd.
The woman was told to leave
the bar because of her behaviour,
which included vaping in
the pokie room and abusing
staff and patrons before and
after being refused a drink.
When the bar was closing
about 1am on Sunday, Cattell
realised the sign was gone.
"We checked up and down the
street and in bushes looking for
it, but couldn't find it so we then
checked the (CCTV) cameras,"
she said.
Footage showed the woman
get out of the passenger seat in
an Uber, go to the sign and the
Uber driver open the boot, and
help put the sign in. The vehicle
then drives off.
The driver was unaware the
woman was not supposed to
take the sign. She had told him
it was hers.
Said Cattell: "I work bloody
hard and long hours at the
bar to ensure people are safe,
happy and having a good time.
To have someone come in and
steal from me is a real kick in
the guts."
Cattell then put the footage on
The Miller Bar's Facebook page,
asking for help to find the sign.
On Sunday, Cattell said
an email from the woman's
husband apologising for "borrowing"
the sign, saying “we
were extremely drunk and
didn't know what time of day it
was.”
“Not low enough.”
That is how the city council’s
finance committee chair Sam
MacDonald sees the projected
7.95% rates increase going into
the Draft Annual Plan process.
It is lower than the projected
10.52% increase at the end
of last year’s Annual Plan
process, but a big gap with the
Government’s proposed 4%
rates increase cap remains.
Lower than expected city
council insurance costs and
less spending than budgeted
on the capital programme have
contributed significantly to the
decrease in the projected rates
rise.
Rates will still be impacted by
the One New Zealand Stadium
build at 1.02%.
The provisional 7.95%
figure was presented to city
councillors at a workshop on
Tuesday.
Last year, the rates
increase was 6.6%. Under
the Government’s proposal,
councils will be required to
start considering the rates cap
in financial planning from
2027 while official enforcement
takes effect by July 2029.
Mayor Phil Mauger, city
councillors and staff have the
challenge of progressively
lowering rates increases before
rates cap comes into effect.
The case of the corgis’ missing ice cream
BY GEOFF SLOAN
What has happened to the
corgis’ ice cream?
The ice cream was noticed
to be missing last Wednesday
by people working near the
sculpture at the tram stop on
Tuam St near the intersection
with High St.
And the city council says it
has no clues where it has gone.
'Corgis On High' is a set of
three bronze statues which
were installed on High St in
2003 to mark Queen Elizabeth
II's golden jubilee.
She owned more than 30
pembroke welsh corgis.
Artist David Marshall
depicted three corgis each in a
different pose.
The third corgi in the
lineup was sniffing an ice
cream that had fallen on the
ground.
The corgi statues cost $8000
each.
City council head of parks
Rupert Bool said staff noticed
the ice cream was missing from
the installation during a recent
routine inspection.
He said the city council
is currently working with
Marshall to find a way forward.
It is not the first time the ice
cream-loving corgis have run
into trouble.
One was stolen shortly
after the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, resulting in
the city council removing
the remaining two for
safe-keeping.
In 2020, one of the corgis
was painted blue by an
anti-colonialism protester.
The paint was removed
without any permanent
damage.
Councils should take steps to
keep rates down – minister
The Miller Bar owner Michelle Cattell is pleased to get her sign back.
‘Blow out’
no excuse
› From Page 1
He told Cattell the sign had
been returned and was at the
front of the bar, and asked if she
could take the Facebook post
down.
Cattell said once she got
an apology from his wife she
would consider removing the
video.
After “babysitting your wife
and making sure everyone else
was happy, it was the last thing
I wanted to do (try and find the
sign),” she told him.
The woman sent an email
apologising to Cattell following
her husband's message.
She said they “they have been
having a hard time of late and
had a complete blow out on the
drink.”
Said Cattell: “That's no
excuse, we all go through
hard times but we still have
to be respectful to people and
property".
But she was still undecided
whether to take it down, many
people urging her not to as a
deterrent to others.
Local Government Minister
Simon Watts told The Star
councils do have a transition
period to adjust to the rates cap.
“But my expectation is that
councils act responsibly now,
rather than waiting for the
formal introduction of the
rates cap. They should be
taking steps now to keep rate
increases under control for
their constituents.”
The Draft Annual Plan will
be adopted on February 10
before going out for public
consultation.
In late June, the final Annual
Plan will be adopted for the
2026/27 financial year.
Mauger told The Star he and
councillors are working hard
to keep rates down and will
continue discussions.
“I’m open to any options that
help lower the figure further.
I’m looking forward to hearing
from the public too when the
Draft Annual Plan goes out for
feedback."
Mauger did not say if he has a
target number in mind for this
year’s rates rise when asked by
The Star.
MacDonald says there are still
many “levers at our disposal”
for reducing the rates increase
this year other than cutting
services including spending
more of the city council’s
surplus on reducing rates.
“(A) nearly 8% increase is still
too high. We need to get it down
to around the Government’s
target,” said MacDonald.
Ideally for MacDonald, this
would be in the 4-6% range for
this year’s budget.
He also wants to use about
$10m of the city council’s $21m
forecast financial surplus on
rates, which he says would
decrease the rates rise to about
the same 6.6% rise last year.
MacDonald does not expect
major cuts to services like
libraries, rubbish collection or
pools in this year’s budget, only
minor tweaks to spending items
like grant programmes.
Any proposed major cuts to
services would require public
consultation.
Riccarton Ward city
councillor Tyla Harrison-
Hunt agrees with MacDonald’s
proposal to spend more of the
surplus on decreasing rates.
“I think it strikes a reasonable
balance between debt
repayment and keeping rates
down. However you save more
for ratepayers in the long term
by paying down debt,’ he said.
Running on borrowed time
Two years ago, Bronwyn Harris
was given 12-18 months to
live after an out-of-the-blue
diagnosis of stage four ovarian
cancer turned her world upside
down.
In just under three weeks’
time, she will stand on the start
line of the Kathmandu Coast
to Coast, running not only for
herself, but in memory of her
friend Wendy Gerritsen, who
lost her own battle with ovarian
cancer.
Harris met Gerritsen during
treatment, where the pair
bonded over a shared love of
adventure and the outdoors.
“She was such a little
adventurer and very active
and outgoing. I told her that
completing the Kathmandu
Coast to Coast was on my bucket
list because my dad had done it.
She was so excited for me and
very encouraging,” Harris said.
“Before she passed, I told
her I was going to carry on
her good work and try my best
to complete the race. When I
found out I got in, I cried the
whole day,” she said.
In October 2023, Harris,
a fit and active 47-year-old,
had been experiencing some
abdominal pain but didn’t
think much of it. When the
pain worsened, she went to the
doctor expecting a prescription
for antibiotics.
Within hours, routine checks
escalated into blood tests
and an ultrasound, as nurses
Earlier this year, Bronwyn Harris became a qualified personal trainer, sharing her passion for movement with clients like
Later that day, Harris was
admitted to the gynaecology
ward at Christchurch Hospital.
me what felt like a million
questions. Then they started
and making the most of it
more sinister here, like cancer’.
“I just laughed at her. I said,
‘but I’m fine, I feel fine. I just
came for antibiotics’.”
Over the next four weeks,
Harris prepared for major
surgery without knowing
exactly what was wrong.
When she woke from
surgery, doctors delivered the
devastating news.
“We found cancer.”
Surgeons had removed
tumours from her lungs, liver,
bowel, stomach, ovaries and
uterus. She was diagnosed
with stage four ovarian cancer
and was given a year, maybe
18 months, to live if her body
responded well to treatment.
“I was just in shock. I kept
thinking about my daughters. I
wanted to see them turn 21, get
married and have kids. Nothing
really prepares you to hear
you’ve only got 12-18 months to
live,” Harris said.
She began seven months of
chemotherapy, all while putting
her affairs in order.
“I sold my business. I planned
my funeral, all that really
difficult stuff.”
Then everything changed.
Harris was offered a medication
called Olaparib.
There was no guarantee her
body would respond well, but
it did. Doctors told her she now
had a 70% chance of living
another seven years.
“My whole life changed. I
thought, well what do I want
Harris while undergoing treatment, with her husband Tony, and daughters Zoe,
20, and Taylor, 22.
to do with this time I’ve been
given?”
Earlier this year, Harris
became a qualified personal
trainer and now works at Flex
Fitness in Prebbleton, sharing
her passion for movement and
resilience.
She is determined to use her
Coast to Coast campaign to raise
awareness and funds for the
Ovarian Cancer Foundation.
“Ovarian cancer is often called
the ‘silent killer’. Most women
are diagnosed at stage three or
four, when the prognosis is very
grim. There aren’t any routine
screening tests like there are for
breast cancer.
“I had literally no symptoms.
That’s the thing with ovarian
cancer, it’s so easy to miss. We
need to be able to screen for
it and find a way to detect it
earlier.”
As Harris takes her place at
the Kumara Beach start line for
the Kathmandu Coast to Coast,
with her family supporting
her from the sidelines, she will
carry with her the memory of
her friend Wendy and the quiet
victory of survival.
• The Kathmandu Coast to Coast
runs over February 13–14, starting at
Woman died after
ED staff missed
signs of sepsis
A woman who arrived at the
emergency department at
Christchurch Hospital in acute
pain four years ago died the
next day after staff missed signs
she had sepsis.
The 65-year-old patient died
of urosepsis, a life-threatening
complication of a urinary tract
infection, in January 2022.
In a report released on Tuesday,
deputy Health and Disability
Commissioner Carolyn Cooper
made a ruling stating the hospital
failed to provide reasonable
care, making “severe departures
from standard practice”.
Health NZ completed an
adverse event review (AER) into
the woman’s care and also found
delays in the recognition and
treatment of urosepsis.
The report said the woman
had a history of high blood pressure
and Crohn's disease, with a
previous bowel resection, small
bowel obstructions and a kidney
stone.
The woman was diagnosed
with renal colic after being
assessed in the ED and given
pain relief.
The report said the woman
was experiencing prolonged
hypertension by the next
morning.
“Throughout the day, (the
woman) received intravenous
fluid boluses as the primary
intervention for her hypotension,”
the report said.
“The AER found that a lack of
response or improvement from
the fluid should have triggered
a challenge of the diagnosis and
consideration of other possible
differential diagnoses or causes.
However, this did not occur.”
Medical reviews at the time
suggested the woman’s hypotension
may have been due to the
effects of the pain relief.
Clinicians noted the woman
did not have a fever but clinical
notes also recorded instances of
the woman shivering, a symptom
of sepsis, the report said.
“The AER found that clinical
staff exhibited anchoring bias
– that is, there was an over-reliance
on the absence of a fever,”
the report said.
“While the nurse in charge,
the house officer, and the registrar
were informed of (the
woman’s) deterioration, there is
no evidence of a senior medical
officer consultation (after
the initial ward round at 8am),
consideration of involvement
of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
team, or a rapid response call
The Health and Disability Commission has ruled Christchurch Hospital failed to provide reasonable care to a woman who
died from sepsis not detected by staff.
being made when (the woman’s)
observations were in the
red and blue zone, as required
by the mandatory escalation
pathway.”
The deputy commissioner
found an “early warning score”
chart had several incomplete
observations throughout the
day, with the total score also not
recorded, which was not in line
with Health NZ policy.
Cooper criticised Health NZ’s
failure to follow its mandatory
escalation and urosepsis
policies and the renal colic
protocol.
“Had these policies been
adhered to, the delay in the
diagnosis of urosepsis may have
been avoided,” she said.
Cooper recommended developing
an education and training
plan for staff around diagnosing
urosepsis and the importance of
medical documentation.
Health NZ told the commissioner
it had changed its protocols
to highlight the need to consider
an alternative diagnosis.
In a statement, Health New
Zealand chief medical officer Te
Waipounamu Alan Pithie made
a formal apology.
“On behalf of Health New
Zealand, we would like to say
how sorry we are for what
happened and extend our
sincerest condolences to the
patient’s family and friends for
the loss of their loved one,” he
said.
“We have also implemented
changes to improve our
services including amending
the renal colic clinical pathway
for care, rolling out a national
sepsis action plan, and updating
processes for recording clinical
information on deteriorating
patients.” – RNZ
Keeping the peace on the sidelines
BY DYLAN SMITS
Sports clubs and an Olympic
gold medallist are asking
spectators to keep it cute on the
sidelines.
Hamish Kerr, who won gold in
the men’s high jump at the 2024
Paris Olympics, is backing Sport
Canterbury’s Keep It Positive
campaign.
It promotes safe and
supportive sideline behaviour
across a wide range of sports.
The campaign is coming to
Christchurch after the initiative
was launched in South and Mid
Canterbury last year.
Poor sideline behaviour in
the city has been under the
spotlight before.
Mother Alicia Shaw called
out fellow parents for mocking
comments and laughing at
primary school pupils at her
son’s cross-country race in May
2024.
The organisations currently
involved in the campaign are
Badminton Canterbury, Athletics
Canterbury, Canterbury
Cricket, Mainland Netball,
Canterbury Softball, Tennis
Canterbury, Mainland Football,
Canterbury Volleyball, Canterbury
Hockey, Canterbury Rugby
League, Canterbury Basketball
and Squash Canterbury.
The Canterbury Rugby Football
Union is not participating
in the campaign as it has its
own processes for encouraging
good spectator sportsmanship.
Kerr said good sideline
behaviour is all about creating
a positive environment for
athletes.
“Being on the pitch is a stressful
enough job as it is, and so
to have the support of people
on the sideline, and making
sure that feels encouraging and
enjoyable, is the most important
thing,” he said.
“Unfortunately, there will
always be one team winning
and one team losing. But, at the
end of the day, so long as the
kids are getting out there and
just having fun, that’s the most
important thing.”
The Keep It Positive campaign
will be promoted through signs
displayed at sports events participating
in the initiative.
A large online presence will
also help reinforce the campaign
message. It will help
sports organisations create
policies and guidelines, which
protect young people while
fostering a positive sporting
culture.
Mainland Football chief
executive Martin Field-Dodgson
supports the campaign. He
said serious instances of poor
behaviour from spectators are
not frequent but do occur.
"There’s more than 90%
of people who are doing the
right thing every week but
there’s always instances of
unacceptable behaviour. I
probably get a couple serious
complaints or discipline needed
for sideline behaviour every
year but that’s only what gets
officially reported.”
The initiative is also
about encouraging more
positive support, rather
than just discouraging poor
Hamish Kerr and Sport Canterbury
sport development lead Serena
Somlyai are supporting the expansion
of the Keep It Positive campaign.
behaviour, said Field-Dodgson.
"Most families have got kids
where one's playing this or
another sport, and another kid's
playing this or that. Irrespective
of wherever people go, we
want them to have wicked
experiences. So if a range
of sports are involved, that
increases the chances of getting
that message out there.”
Sport Canterbury was unable
to provide data about poor
sideline behaviour.
Said Sport Canterbury’s
sport development lead Serena
Somlyai: “There is no one event
or incident locally that has led
to us launching the initiative,
we are just pro-actively putting
out the messaging, rather than
waiting for a crisis to have to
respond to.”
Doors open at popular hardware store
The nationwide, Kiwi-owned hardware
and DIY business, Mitre 10 MEGA, has
opened a brand-new store in
Christchurch.
Mitre 10 MEGA Prestons, at 390 Prestons
Road, had its soft opening yesterday, with
the grand opening scheduled to take place
over Waitangi weekend. The new store is
owned and operated by father and son
Tim and Miles Andrews, who own the
Ferrymead Mitre 10 MEGA.
Their first Christchurch Mitre 10 store
opened on Moorhouse Avenue in 1993.
Subsequently, over the 2000s, the ‘MEGA’
concept was devised and developed, and
Tim launched the Ferrymead Mitre 10
MEGA in 2007.
Tim’s son Miles started his career at Mitre
10 MEGA Ferrymead in 2016, working in
each department of the store for a couple
of years. He was then appointed assistant
trade manager, a role he continued until
2021, when he was appointed as Mitre 10
MEGA Ferrymead’s Member Principal .
“The Ferrymead store has grown remarkably,
despite the earthquakes and Covid,”
Miles says.
It currently employs around 170
Cantabrians.
Given the success of the Ferrymead store
on the east side of the city, Mitre 10 New
Zealand identified an opportunity to
establish a store to serve the north-eastern
sector, explains Miles.
“Tim and I had always hoped to open a
second store, and fortunately, the Mitre 10
Board granted us the rights to find a
suitable site and build a store.
“We found the Prestons Rd site at the end
of 2023, and chose Tuatara Structures to
build the store. They broke ground in
early 2025, with the store scheduled to
open in early 2026.”
That remarkable 12-month feat has been
achieved, with 80 new employees welcoming
their first customers yesterday.
“Having our team in place and ready to go
is the most rewarding and satisfying part
of the process for me,” says Miles, who is
also Member Principal at Mitre 10 MEGA
Prestons.
Ash Hansen, HR manager at Mitre 10 MEGA Prestons
Miles Andrews Member Principal and Jo Eddy Store Manager of Mitre 10 MEGA Prestons.
“A lot of our Ferrymead team have been
promoted, with 20 of them coming over to
Prestons and taking on new responsibilities.”
One of these is the new store’s manager, Jo
Eddy.
“Jo has been with Mitre 10 for 15 years,”
says Miles.
“She had an HR role and retail management
roles, and has now stepped up to
store manager. She has done the hard
yards.”
HR manager at Prestons, Ash Hansen, has
also worked her way up in the business.
She started out managing the Colombus
Café at the Ferrymead store, where she
gained HR and marketing experience,
giving her the skills to take on the HR
position at the new store.
It’s a young team at Mitre 10 MEGA
Prestons – the average age is 30, with the
store giving young people many opportunities
to have a rewarding career in the
retail field.
Children’s Play Area featuring a magnificent tree house
The Mitre 10 MEGA Prestons store covers
10,000sqm – 5000 retail, 2000 garden
centre and 3000 drive-through and
landscape supplies. It also includes the
Columbus Café and a children’s play area
featuring a magnificent tree house.
“We believe this will be a real drawcard,
with parents able to enjoy coffee or lunch
at the Columbus Café while they keep an
eye on the kids,” says Miles.
Customers will find the same extensive
selection of products as the Ferrymead
store offers, with 50,000 SKUs, (stockkeeping
units) available. Knowing exactly
where to find what they want is made
really easy with digital shelf labelling and
signage, Miles says.
“Customers can just take out their phone
and go to our website where the ‘Ticket
Flashes’ will indicate which aisle and shelf
the product they want is on.
“We are also looking forward to servicing
local tradies. That’s a major part of our
Ferrymead business and we are hoping to
develop it here too.”
For the grand opening over Waitangi
weekend, there will be plenty of fun and
excitement at 390 Prestons Rd. This will
include a free sausage sizzle, a huge range
of specials and giveaways, and radio
station More FM broadcasting from the
site, and the team look forward to meeting
many new customers throughout the
event, Miles says.
The colouful paint aisle at M10 Prestons
Community involvement will also be an
important part of the new store’s operation,
he says.
“We’re excited to give back to our new
community. At Ferrymead, we donate to
local schools and clubs, and we will be
offering similar support here.”
There are some 200 car parks available at
the store, which occupies the back section
of the Prestons Rd site. It is expected that
new businesses, such as professional
services and hospitality, will take up space
at the front of the site over the next year or
two, Miles says.
‘There will be blood on your hands’
BY DANIEL ALVEY
That is the message the head
of the company building a 9m
digital billboard received in the
mail.
Addington-based business
Vast Billboards is expected to
have the sign on Springs Rd,
near the intersection of William
St, operating by the end of
February.
Since the construction of
the sign started at Prebbleton
in December, Vast Billboards
managing director Grant
Moreton said he has received
two letters to his
home about it.
One said he
would have
blood on his
hands if there
was an accident
at the pedestrian
crossing, which is
about 50m away
from the site. Grant Moreton
“That one was
definitely pretty unpleasant,”
Moreton said.
He received another one from
“a concerned resident”.
“We’ve installed billboards
throughout New Zealand, and
this has probably been the
one that has been the most
contentious.”
The billboard has also
attracted a lot of social media
debate and mainstream media
coverage.
It was given consent by the
Selwyn District Council in
August, without asking for
public feedback. Construction
started in December.
The billboard on Springs Rd is expected to be finished by the end of February.
Work on the sign was paused
before Christmas while more
surveying was carried out to
confirm the foundations were
not intruding into the road.
Prebbleton Community
Association chair Jane Elms said
there were still concerns about
the billboard being a distraction
for motorists close to the
pedestrian crossing.
She was aware nothing could
be done to stop the billboard,
which met all of the rules set
under the District Plan.
Moreton said there was no
evidence billboards caused
accidents and the effect on the
traffic was considered as part of
the resource consent.
Alongside safety concerns,
people were also worried about
the impact of light from the sign
coming into their homes.
Moreton said concerns
about light pollution produced
by the billboard were a
“misconception”.
“That billboard will emit less
light than a streetlight.”
He said it has day and night
light sensors to change how
bright the billboard will be.
Moreton believes once it is up
and running, people will see the
benefits. Alongside advertising
for businesses, there would also
be space for community notices.
Interim district council chief
executive Steve Gibling said it is
working with the community on
possible further safety upgrades.
He encouraged people to
report any near misses at the
crossing using the Snap Send
Solve app.
NZ Post
to shut 22
stores in city
NZ Post is closing 22 service
counters in convenience stores,
pharmacies and libraries across
the city.
The state-owned company
said it is closing 142 service
counters across New Zealand.
It said 567 post shops would
remain open nationwide and
rural post shops would not be
affected.
In Christchurch, the affected
stores include Elmwood,
Papanui, Greers Rd, Redwood,
North Avon, Burwood Hospital,
Forte in the central city, Dallington,
Redcliffs, Wainoni, Aranui,
Linwood, Woolston, Hillmorton,
Hoon Hay, Opawa, Prebbleton,
Hei Hei, Ilam, Templeton, and
outlets at Christchurch Airport
and Christchurch Hospital.
Outside the city, services will
also be removed from NZ Post
stores in Burnham, Ashburton’s
Allenton, Creek Rd and Hampstead,
Timaru’s Marchwiel and
Washdyke, as well as Pegasus
and Woodend.
The closures follow an update
to NZ Post's deed of understanding
with the government,
resetting minimum post shop
requirements for the first time
since the 1980s.
NZ Post general manager
consumer Sarah Sandoval said
a review showed increased
demand for parcel services.
"A lot has changed since the
1980s, when our minimum
store requirements were last
set.” – RNZ
Her hip had other plans
Rosemary had plans for her
retirement. Morning walks with
friends, afternoons in the garden,
weekends chasing grandchildren
around the park. Her hip had other
ideas.
“It started gradually,” the
68-year-old recalls. “First I’d
feel it after long walks. Then
after short ones. Eventually I was
feeling it just lying in bed trying to
get comfortable at night.”
Her hips began dictating her
days. She’d decline invitations,
knowing she’d pay for it later. The
garden grew untidy. Visits from
grandchildren became something
to manage rather than enjoy.
“My world was shrinking,” she
admits. “I was becoming someone
who sat and watched rather than
joined in.”
Her daughter had noticed the
change and left a bottle of Koru
FX on Rosemary’s kitchen bench
after reading about the natural
cream in her local paper.
“I wasn’t expecting much,”
Rosemary admits. “But I
massaged some into my hip and
within minutes felt this lovely
warming sensation, then a cooling
that settled everything down.
The edge came right off. I was
pleasantly surprised to be honest.”
The New Zealand-made
cream contains 16 natural oils
including mānuka, arnica and
black pepper, designed to absorb
quickly through the skin. Unlike
sticky gels she’d tried before,
this one felt pleasant with a light
peppermint scent and no residue
on her clothes.
What impressed Rosemary
most was how quickly it worked.
“I’d been putting up with this for
months, modifying everything I
did. Suddenly I had something
that actually helped – and helped
fast.”
She began applying it before her
morning walks, before gardening,
before the grandchildren visited.
The activities she’d been avoiding
gradually returned to her routine.
“Last weekend I spent three
hours at the park with them,”
she beams. “Running around,
pushing swings, picking them up
for cuddles. Six months ago that
would have been unthinkable.”
Even bedtime improved. “I used
to dread lying down because my
hip would niggle until I finally
drifted off. Now I apply some
Koru FX, settle in, and I’m away.
It’s not that the issue is gone, my
hip just isn’t screaming at me
Neighbours stunned after elderly
woman found dead, teen in court
BY ANNA SARGENT AND SAM
SHERWOOD
Police found the body of an
elderly woman at a Burnham
property after being called
out to reports a teenager had
allegedly assaulted another
person inside the home.
A 19-year-old man has been
charged with murder and two
charges of assault in a family
relationship in relation to the
incident.
Emergency services were
called to an address on
Burnham School Rd about
3.05am on Tuesday after a
report of disorder.
Neighbours said it was
usually a quiet area and
they did not hear anything
overnight.
One woman, who did not wish
to be named, said the death was
“incredibly sad”.
“It’s actually a really lovely
road to live on, neighbours all
wave out to each other and I
never heard a thing so it’s a real
shock,” she said.
“There are properties
scattered around this road and
a busy preschool down the
road.”
The property is on a long
rural road surrounded by
farmland.
Police at the Burnham property where the elderly woman was found dead.
Another neighbour said she
woke up early to flashing police
lights but did not hear anything
unusual.
One man believed a family
lived at the property.
He said he had met them a
couple of times over the years
PHOTOS: RNZ/NATHAN MCKINNON
and they were pleasant.
He found out about the death
after checking the news on
Tuesday morning.
A blue police tent was set
up and the property was
cordoned off as forensic officers
examined the scene.
It is undersood a relative
of the 19-year-old called
police after she was allegedly
assaulted and she barricaded
herself in a room.
It's understood that on arrival
police tasered the 19-year-old.
They then found the elderly
woman's body at the property.
Detective Senior Sergeant
Karen Simmons said the
19-year-old was charged with
murder and two counts of
assault in a family relationship.
He appeared in the district
court on Tuesday afternoon
via audio visual link and
was granted interim name
suppression. He was remanded
in custody ahead of another
appearance next month.
Seaweed to compostable packaging
Olivia Cooper is turning
seaweed into compostable
packaging, using science and
curiosity to tackle plastic
waste.
GreenShift Packaging
is a startup project led by
the 18-year-old Bachelor of
Science student majoring in
biochemistry at Canterbury
University.
The project is developing
seaweed-based alternatives
to single-use plastics that
are designed to break down
naturally in home compost
after use. She has always been
interested in seaweed and
what it can do.
“There are people doing
this overseas, but we aren’t
seeing much of it here in New
Zealand, so I thought, why
don’t I just give it a try?”
That curiosity led her to
apply for UC’s summer startup
programme just days before
the deadline, despite having
no business background and
having only completed her first
year of study.
“I honestly didn’t think I
had a chance, but somehow
I got in, and I’m absolutely
loving it.”
Using a fast-growing species
of seaweed that is readily
available in the estuary, Cooper
has developed a thin, flexible
film that can be tailored for
different uses, from soft wraps
to firmer packaging.
“At the moment, I’m literally
making it in my kitchen. I
collect the seaweed, take it
through some processes and
Olivia Cooper is turning seaweed from the estuary into thin, flexible film that can be used to make soft wraps and
packaging material.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
cast it into a film. A lot of it
has been trial and error, but
I’m quite a curious person, so I
just kept testing things until it
worked,” the Sumner resident
said.
While the science behind
the material is still evolving,
Cooper said her biochemistry
studies, alongside advice from
UC marine biology academics,
gave her the confidence to
experiment.
Cooper is already in early
conversations with bakeries
to trial the packaging with
their baked goods. Her longterm
ambition is to design
a material that can slot into
existing manufacturing
processes, reducing the need
for new infrastructure.
“The dream would be to
swap out petroleum-based
inputs for my seaweed
solution.
“That way, companies don’t
have to rebuild all of their
equipment from scratch.”
The startup programme has
played a key role in turning
Cooper’s idea into a viable
prototype, providing daily
workshops, mentoring and
exposure to Christchurch’s
startup ecosystem.
Cooper is mentored by Emma
Arvidson, a UC graduate and
founder of an oat-milk startup.
While she doesn’t see
herself running GreenShift
Packaging long-term, as her
future interests lie in cancer
research and other climate
focused projects, Cooper hopes
to develop the idea far enough
to hand it over or license the
intellectual property.
New lights
switched on
The new traffic signals at the
intersection of Harewood,
Breens and Gardiners Rds have
been switched on in time for
the new school year.
City council planning and
delivery manager Jacob
Bradbury said the new lights
became operational on Tuesday
morning.
“The new traffic signals and
other safety improvements on
Harewood Rd will make travelling
through the area safer
for all road users, including
students travelling to and from
local schools,” said Bradbury.
“We want to thank the community
for their patience while
we’ve made these improvements,
particularly during the
super week when the intersection
was closed. Our transport
and three waters teams have
coordinated their work so we
can take a ‘one pass’ approach
– avoiding the need to dig into
this section of road twice to
carry out the two different
pieces of work.”
Work on a pipe replacement
in the area will continue
until March 6. Some traffic
management will also remain
in place.
Hailstorms
‘wiped out
entire crops’
NEWS
Canterbury arable farmers are
facing millions of dollars in losses
after a third major hail storm hit
parts of the region on Friday.
Crops have been destroyed,
while others have gone to
seed after prolonged
wet weather left them
unusable.
Federated Farmers
Arable chair David Birkett,
who grows wheat, barley
and vegetable seeds
in Leeston, just south of
Christchurch, said growers
should be harvesting
but are instead waiting for
conditions to improve.
“We should be in the thick
of harvest but we are sitting
here waiting for the weather to
improve,” he said.
“Since Christmas we've gone
from a typical hot, dry Canterbury
summer to really wet
weather with plenty of hail
storms coming through.”
Birkett said the crop damage
was unlikely to have an immediate
impact on supermarket
prices.
David Birkett
Some crops, such as wheat,
are more commonly insured
by farmers and can also be
imported from Australia and
the United States.
“It’s likely to have a bigger
impact on international
markets if there are
fewer exports,” he said.
However, he said vegetable
prices could see
a moderate increase
in about three months
due to a lag effect from
reduced plantings now.
“Normally we’d have
three or four hail storms
a year, but we’ve already
had about 12 so far this year –
three being really hard-hitting
ones which have wiped out
entire crops,” he said.
Birkett said the hail damage
was highly localised, with
some growers losing everything
while neighbouring farms were
unaffected.
“Some hail damage has wiped
out entire fields, which is devastating
for the growers because
for some it’s the second or third
Repeated hailstorms have destroyed crops across Canterbury, pushing some arable farmers to the brink of financial ruin.
season where they’ve lost crops,
so cash flow is getting tight.”
He said the cost of the hail
storms this year had totalled
$10 million in Canterbury
alone.
“The frustrating thing is that
the crop was looking really
good this season and now some
of it’s not usable.”
Birkett said growers had
already spent the money
required to get crops to harvest,
meaning any losses directly cut
into income.
Another arable farmer said the
losses were putting significant
strain on farm finances.
“It’s not just the hail, the ongoing
wet weather means we can’t
harvest and the quality of the
crop is going down,” he said.
“My milling wheat won’t make
the quality grade, so I’ll have to
sell it as feed wheat for the dairy
industry, so I’ll lose $100 a tonne.”
Birkett said there was no rain
in the forecast this week, but
temperatures remained low,
so it could take a week for the
crops to dry out enough to be
harvested.
“While other parts of the ag
sector like dairy and sheep
and beef farmers are doing
well, arable farmers are really
struggling,” he said.
reporting by Dylan Smits
The Way
We Were
Australian trade commissioner A. R Taysom and his
wife and friend Mrs A. R Perrier enjoying Australia Day
celebrations at Mona Vale in 1973.
Mona Vale has a long history
of hosting special events,
among them Australia Day.
Guests toasted Australia’s
185th anniversary on January
27, 1973, with the Australian
trade commissioner A. R Taysom
in attendance.
Later that year, the Creative
Living Display opened
at Mona Vale as part of the
Christchurch Arts Festival. It
provided examples of leisure
activities – from macrame
to wine-making – to inspire
visitors, as well as a place to
relax.
“It is an extension of hospitality,
as I see it,” festival
hospitality and social committee
“chairman” Mrs Lancely
Walshaw told The Press.
Mona Vale’s land was
owned by the Deans brothers,
before it was purchased
by Frederick and Alice Waymouth.
The Waymouths built
the homestead in 1899, which
MONA VALE
was designed by architect
Joseph Maddison. They sold
the property to Annie Quayle
Townend in 1905, who named
it Mona Vale after her mother’s
home in Tasmania.
Townend was the daughter
of a wealthy runholder; she
was apparently the richest
woman in New Zealand at the
time. She added nine acres
to the property and had the
gate house built. After the NZ
International Exhibition in
1907, Townend purchased the
exhibition’s fernery and had
it reassembled at Mona Vale.
She also added the bathhouse.
After her death the
property had various owners
– Tracy Gough of Gough,
Gough and Hammer, the
Church of the Latter Day
Saints – before it was saved
from redevelopment by the
city council and Riccarton
Borough Council in 1969 and
preserved as a public park.
SPORT
Striker hoping for payback in PNG heat
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Ryan Feutz has revenge on
his mind when his South
Island United side meet South
Melbourne in their third OFC
Pro League match in Papua
New Guinea on Sunday.
Feutz has history with the
Melbourne club, having lost
2-1 to them while playing
for Sydney Olympic in the
Australian Championship in
November.
Olympic ultimately fell
one point short of reaching
the knockout rounds, while
Melbourne went on to win the
competition.
“A bit of revenge is definitely
needed,” he said.
“They (Melbourne) are a good
outfit. They’ve retained a lot of
their players for a while and
are very effective off set pieces.
“They’ve got their strengths,
and they will be a tough match
for sure.”
United head into the fixture
on the back of a 2-1 win over
Vanuatu United in their final
game in Auckland on Friday.
That followed a 3-0 loss to
Auckland FC in their opening
match, before their game
against Bula FC was postponed
due to heavy rain.
Feutz scored the club’s
first-ever goal in the win
over Vanuatu – something he
said meant a lot, being from
Ashburton originally and now
representing his home region.
“To score, and score first is a
great feeling,” he said.
South Island United striker Ryan Feutz is hoping to get revenge over South Melbourne in the OFC Pro League this weekend,
after losing to them while playing for Sydney Olympic last year.
PHOTO: MC MEDIA
“When you join a new club,
especially as an attacker, it’s
always good to get off the mark
early. It breaks the ice and the
nerves a little bit.”
United are set to depart for
Papua New Guinea today, where
they will play three matches in
Port Moresby – against South
Melbourne on Sunday, followed
by games against Solomon
Kings on Wednesday and hosts
PNG Hekari next Saturday.
Feutz has never played in
the Pacific Islands before and,
despite forecast temperatures
above 30degC and humidity
around 70%, he is looking forward
to the challenge.
“It’s very cold in Christchurch,
so to get over there in
warmer weather, I think it will
be great.”
He said the conditions would
play a part, but hoped they
would not be too extreme.
“The heat will be a big factor,
maybe you could go overboard
and do some training in three
layers of jackets to get used to it,
but I think it’s a mentality shift.
“If you tell yourself it’s too
hot, it’s too hot. But if you say it’s
fine, then I think you can convince
yourself you can cope.”
Feutz said United were
starting to click after having
limited time together before
their opening match.
“Every session, every game,
the more time we get to spend
with each other, it’s only going
to improve us overall.
“The first game didn’t go the
way we wanted it to, but that
was our first outing as a team, it
takes a bit of time to get used to
each other, how we play, all that
sort of stuff.
“Playing well (against Vanuatu)
and getting a result was
massive for us, and it gives us a
bit of momentum going into the
next round,” he said.
United sit fourth in the
standings with three points
from two games and could
further consolidate a top-four
spot with a strong run over the
next week, before the league
shifts to Australia for three
matches at the end of February.
On Saturday, Vanuatu play
Tahiti United, while PNG
Hekari face unbeaten Auckland
FC. United then meet South
Melbourne on Sunday, followed
Young talent to
face old hands as
interclub returns
BY DIANE KEENAN
Elmwood’s men’s team will face a
rejuvenated Te Kura Hagley Park
when premier interclub resumes
after the Christmas break at
Wilding Park on Saturday.
Both teams go into the round
on a high, with Elmwood
sweeping Mid Canterbury and
Te Kura Hagley Park recording
an upset win against
Burnside Park/Sumner
before the break.
Te Kura Hagley Park
has plenty of young talent
to draw on, including
Ray Xu, who has enjoyed
a memorable summer
on court, highlighted
by a runner-up finish at
the under 19 national
championships.
Elmwood will field its
experienced line-up of the
Darling brothers, Elliot and
Lawrence, alongside Tom
Batt, Jamie Poole, and Tennis
Canterbury general manager
Bevan Johns.
Batt, who currently heads
the player ladder, played in the
national masters championships
at Wilding Park last week. He
paired with Cashmere’s Harry
Weeds to finish runners-up in the
Tom Batt
over 35 doubles, with James and
Tim Meredith winning the title in
three sets.
The Meredith brothers will not
be in action this weekend, with
Cashmere having the bye.
Burnside Park/Sumner will
also look to its young stars,
including Jack Hansen-Ratter
and Sakeri Parnell, when they
play Edgeware.
Hansen-Ratter won
both the singles and
doubles championships
at the Canterbury Open in
December, partnering with
Mid Canterbury’s Joshua
Gilbert in the doubles.
Parnell turned heads
at the under 16 national
championships, also
played at Wilding
Park, when he finished
runner-up in the singles.
Mid-Canterbury will come up
against Bishopdale, who were
well-beaten in the last round by
Cashmere.
Mid-Canterbury’s Gilbert
and Riley Breen have also had
a busy summer competing
in tournaments, with Breen
reaching the semi-finals of the
under 18 nationals.
In the women’s competition,
leaders Te Kura Hagley Park
Brothers James (left) and Tim Meredith won the men’s doubles at the national
over 35 masters championship at the weekend.
MEN’S INTERCLUB POINTS
Elmwood 99, Cashmere 91, Burnside
Park/Sumner 90, Mid-Canterbury 70,
WOMEN’S INTERCLUB POINTS
Te Kura Hagley Park 72, Elmwood
Bishopdal 37, Waimairi 24.
should be untroubled when
they face bottom-of-the-table
Waimairi.
Much of the interest in this
week’s round will be on the clash
between second-place Elmwood
and third-place Edgeware.
Elmwood’s top player and
Canterbury Open singles
champion Abby Mason, has
moved to Perth to study
medicine and will miss the
remainder of the season.
Edgeware’s top player Nishitha
Maarka also tasted success
at the open, combining with
Bishopdale’s Aliyah Daly to win
the doubles.
Bishopdale plays Cashmere,
whose top player Caroline
Andrieux won the over 30 singles
and the mixed doubles at the
national masters championships,
while her team mate Mandy
Wilson won the over 45 doubles.
Twyford claims mile title
A second-place finish in the
women’s mile at the Cook’s Classic
in Whanganui at the weekend was
enough for Christchurch’s Rosa
Twyford to be crowned national
champion. The Cook’s Classic
doubled as the national mile
championships and was won by
Ireland’s Laura Nicholson. University
runner Twyford was second in
4:47.01, making her the fastest New
Zealander in the field, securing her
first senior national title.
Cantabs in junior Warriors
Fifteen players from Canterbury
will compete in the NSWRL’s junior
competitions with the Warriors this
season. Rico Lemalie will be vicecaptain
for the under 19 team in
the SG Ball Cup, joined by Bishop
Neal, Amasio Tiatia, Micah Sula,
Rene Frame and Sione Telefoni.
SPORT
Cooper claims crucial
continental MTB wins
Christchurch mountain bikers
have impressed on their home
turf in the opening two rounds
of the UCI Oceania Continental
MTB series at Crocodile Park in
Halswell at the weekend.
Olympian Anton Cooper, 20
years after first learning the
sport on the same tracks and
preparing for his 15th professional
season, finished first in
both Saturday’s first round and
Sunday’s second round of elite
men’s races.
In the elite women’s races,
Mary Gray recorded a pair of
second-place finishes, while
Amélie Mackay placed third
in the first race. Both women’s
races were won by Australian
Rebecca Henderson.
Cooper said his results would
be valuable in the lead-in to the
UCI World Series, which begins
in May.
“It feels good to get two wins
– we missed the rain on both
days,” he said.
“The tracks are riding really
well and I am happy to go twofrom-two
and get a fat stack of
points which really helps with
my world ranking."
Racing six laps, Cooper finished
five minutes clear of
fellow professional Sam Gaze in
the first race and three minutes
Anton Cooper secured a pair of first-place finishes in the opening rounds of the UCI
Oceania Continental MTB series on his home track in Halswell at the weekend.
PHOTO: CYCLING NZ
clear in the second, taking full
advantage of his knowledge of
the course.
“I love racing at home,”
Cooper said.
“It is a huge benefit to us Kiwi
riders. We don’t have too many
races here so to do that and get
maximum points is nice.
“It is a fun place to ride and
race, and the club do a great job
in organising and preparing the
track.”
Canterbury riders also stood
out in the age-group categories,
with Wilbur Talbot and George
Armstrong winning both races
in the boys’ under 17 and under
15 divisions respectively, while
Isla Smylie claimed both girls’
under 15 races.
Under 23 rider Maria Laurie
won the first race and finished
on the podium in the second.
Ethan Richardson and Ethan
Forest (boys’ under 17), Jack
Wells (boys’ under 15), Abigail
Junge and Alyssa Nyhan
(girls’ under 17), and Christina
Symons (girls’ under 15) also
secured podium finishes.
The third round of the series
will be held in Taupō in three
weeks, on February 15.
Washouts tighten
up one-day comp
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Back-to-back weeks without
play in the Metro one-day
cricket premiership have left the
competition wide open, with just
one win separating first place
from sixth with three rounds
remaining.
Every team has had
at least two of its four
matches washed out, with
Old Boys and Sydenham
managing only one completed
game each.
Burnside captain Matt
Hay said it was one of the
wettest summers he could
remember.
“It’s been quite stop-start, hard
to get any momentum,” he said.
“We’ve tried to train around
the weather, it’s been quite
hard. We’ve done a few sessions
indoors and have stayed in touch
and done a few off-field things
where we can as well.”
Hay’s Burnside team top the
table with two wins from two –
the only team to win two matches
– but they are just nine points
clear of East Shirley in sixth.
Even bottom-placed Riccarton
and Lancaster Park sit only one
win outside the top four and the
playoff positions.
“Potentially you could get
through on three wins, I’m not
sure,” Hay said.
Matt Hay
“Obviously we haven’t played
since the start of January.
Cricket is a momentum and
form game so you do get on a bit
of a roll but we haven't got that.
“If you are playing well, then it
sort of flows game-to-game, but
no-one’s got that flow so
it does make it a little bit
harder, but I guess it’s the
same for everyone.”
Burnside host thirdplaced
Sydenham at
Sydenham Park on Saturday,
while second-placed
Old Boys travel to Upper
Riccarton Domain to face
Riccarton. St Albans are
away to Lancaster Park, and
Heathcote host East Shirley at
Heathcote Domain.
TRAINING
PROGRAMME
15 MARCH 2026 COMMUNITY FUN RUN | 12KM OR 6KM WWW.CITY2SURF.CO.NZ
Upping the pace — step it up a bit more!
This week we will step it up a bit more. The beginners group will progress to the stage that most of the walking
is replaced by slow jogging and the intermediate group are starting to incorporate some efforts in zone 2.
Remember that zone 1 is perceived as an easy effort which you can maintain for very long periods of time. In
zone 2 you will get slightly puffed but you can still have a conversation. You go from jogging in zone 1 to a proper
running movement in zone 2 with the main difference being that zone 1 has a slower rhythm, staying low to the
ground where as zone 2 brings extra spring in your step combined with an increase in leg turnover (stride rate).
The intermediate group introduces zone 2 pace as 2 minute repetitions alternated by 2 minute easy jogging. Zone
2 to 3 will be the recommended pace for the City to Surf event for the intermediate group while the beginners will
mainly stay in zone 1 and 2.
The difference between walking and jogging is not only decided by the rhythm of the movement but also how
and where you land your feet. When jogging most efficiently you land on your mid-foot under the centre of gravity
of the body, which, in the upright position, is located in the pelvis just behind the midline of the body. With a slight
forward lean of the body you can use gravity to pull you forward while your legs keep you upright and push you in
a forward direction. Walking is done in a more upright position and most of us land on our heel first and roll over
the outside of our foot before pushing off with our forefoot. It helps to keep your core (lower abdomen, back, pelvis
and hips) well supported by pushing your pelvis slightly forward. This will stop you from “sitting” and over striding.
WEEK 4
To achieve this goal you need to
develop some awareness around the
basic requirements of exercising for
health and fitness. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions
per week will only maintain what
you have and 1 session per week is
definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions?
The duration of your sessions will
generally build towards between
30 and 50 minutes with one longer
session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to
train at?
The good thing about the
programme is that all your runs will
be done at submaximal pace, also
called conversation pace. That means
a pace where you can still talk. If you
can’t talk you are going too fast and
you are likely to come to a grinding
halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying
information are written as a guide only. If you
are concerned about your health at any stage
please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP
There is no need to bring
fluids with you during the
sessions as you are not
exercising long and hard
enough to cause serious
dehydration. Even on warm
(north-west) days it is
sufficient to have a glass of
water or juice just before you
go out. You can re-hydrate
on your return home, again
with water and/or a glass
of fruit juice. Taking fluids
during exercise is generally
not required until you start
to exceed 90 minutes on a
normal day and 60 minutes
on a hot day (temperatures
above 25 degrees).
Land Cruiser 300: Enduring
legacy meets modern tech
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Words like ‘icon’ and ‘legend’ are handed
out far too easily, but one vehicle that
genuinely deserves it is the 55-year-old
Toyota Land Cruiser – now going stronger
and better than ever.
An all-new variant of the ultimate
Land Cruiser arrived here four years ago,
making an impact to match its size, with
buyer waiting lists stretching well beyond
the norm. We revisit the latest in a long
line of Toyota full-size off-road SUV royalty
to see if it’s still hitting buyers’ buttons.
The pool of buyers in a country our size
isn’t vast for vehicles in this high-end price
range, starting just under $140,000 for
the entry-level VX. From there, the range
climbs to $159,990 for the racy-looking
GR Sport – with GR representing Gazoo
Racing, Toyota’s performance arm.
The model we’re looking at here is the
slightly more restrained $151,490 GR,
with a little less kit than its Sport sibling,
representing a tidy $8,000 saving. Just
above it sits the plush VX Limited, priced
at $154,990.
Since arriving here in 2021, the VX
and Limited have increased by around
$12,000, while the GR rose $4,000 – though
it debuted with an eye-watering $147,000
sticker.
Buyer loyalty and strong resale,
hallmarks of the Land Cruiser for over 60
years, allow the 300 Series to command
premium pricing — and buyers are
seemingly happy to pay.
What the future holds for juggernaut
SUVs like this is anyone’s guess, but for
now, admire one of the best Land Cruisers
yet, with new-found thrust from a modern
V6 twin-turbo diesel paired with a freshly
designed 10-speed automatic.
Its appearance follows a familiar path
from its predecessor and isn’t a radical
departure. But there are enough obvious
changes to create a fresh, convincing look.
Up front, the design is dominated by a
bluff, upright, floating grille, contrasted by
slimmer, sleeker LED headlights.
Together, these elements give the Land
Cruiser a commanding presence sure to
earn nods from aficionados.
At the heart of the 300 Series is a 225kW
3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6, shared
across all versions, producing a herculean
700Nm of torque.
That torque comes on strongly from
1600rpm and really starts to hum by
2600rpm. Performance is consistently
smooth and energetic across the rev range,
whether on the open road or tackling
steep, punishing backcountry tracks.
Maximum braked towing capacity is
rated at 3500kg, though the engine feels
capable of shoulder much more.
The 10-speed automatic is a gearchanging
champion, with the intelligence
to take command in most on- and offroad
situations. Shift points are barely
noticeable from the driver’s seat, quickly
earning trust and confidence as it selects
Rating out of 10: Performance 8, Handling
On road test average consumption
Five Star 2022 ANCAP crash rating
Price: $151,490
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
the right ratio at precisely the right time.
Inside, the cabin is vast, with enough
room to accommodate an exhaustive list
of standard equipment expected at this
price point.
A head-up display is standard across the
range, alongside a 12.3-inch touchscreen
with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Everyone in the vehicle can keep their
devices charged without in-cabin disputes
over USB ports – there are six in total: two
in the front and four in the rear. Smart
key entry and push button start are
standard.
Attention to detail is evident
everywhere, with premium materials
on high-touch surfaces adding a sense of
quality throughout the cabin.
Equipped with Toyota’s advanced Safety
Sense technologies, occupants can be
confident nearly every modern safety
measure has been deployed.
The GR Sport features an electronic
kinetic dynamic suspension system,
adaptive variable suspension, four drive
modes (Sport S, Sport S+, Comfort, and
Custom), and lockable front and rear
differentials.
The all-coil suspension reduces body
roll while elevating road holding to new
heights. This Land Cruiser is a genuine offroad
weapon, designed to prevail in the
harshest conditions.
Its capabilities are further aided by
700mm of wading depth and 235mm of
ground clearance, keeping the vehicle well
clear of stumps, rocks, and other obstacles.
Ride and road-holding are impressive
for a vehicle of this size and weight,
with greater control over lateral body
movement during hard cornering.
Bumps, corrugations, and other
irregularities are absorbed effortlessly,
leaving passengers barely aware of rough
roads.
Steering has seen a huge improvement
– now responsive and nicely weighted,
making it easy to place this sizeable
SUV precisely where you want it with
confidence and accuracy.
