My neighbor is great, but they often borrow things

and forget to return them. How do I address this

Dear Lender in Turner,

Ah yes, the mystery of the borrowed-and-vanished

item. I know it well. My tennis balls, for

example, have a habit of wandering off with

visitors. What I’ve learned is that most people

aren’t being inconsiderate—they’re just forgetful,

caught up in their own busy human world.

Start with a simple, friendly reminder. A casual,

“Hey, whenever you’re done with that, would you

mind dropping it back over?” keeps things light.

If the pattern continues, try setting expectations

ahead of time.

When you lend something, say, “I’ll need this

back by the weekend.” It feels natural and gives

them a gentle framework. You can even add humor:

“This is my favorite spatula, so treat it like

royalty.” Most folks respond well to warmth and

clarity. And remember, being honest doesn’t

equal confrontation. It’s just communication—

something even an old lab like me has learned

is the key to peaceful living.
