This year we celebrate our 40 th anniversary. In last

month’s ECHO we storied the beginning of our

journey starting on January 16, 1969, when our

predecessors were granted status as Branch No. 69 of

the Senior Citizens Association of British Columbia.

What we are celebrating on May

14 th of this year is 40 years as

a charitable society. That was

a huge development, in that

one important result was that

now donations could receive a

tax receipt, encouraging larger

donations to the Centre.

As we move forward, the hiring of Vicki Raw as our Executive

Director finds us transitioning from an operating board to a

governance board. This has ramifications for the upcoming AGM

on March 25 th when new board members will be elected. While

this transition marks an important and positive evolution for our

Centre it also means that the role of our board members will be

very different.

A governance board focuses on leadership, vision, and

accountability rather than day-to-day operations. The board

will set the strategic direction of the organization, ensure

sound financial oversight, uphold our mission and values, and

support the Executive Director in achieving the Centre’s goals.

In short, governance board members help steer the ship,

while staff manage the daily rowing. This model allows board

members to make meaningful contributions without the

heavy operational workload of the past, ensuring that board

service is both impactful and manageable. As we look ahead to

the next chapter of our Centre’s story, we encourage members

to consider putting their name forward or nominating

someone they believe would bring thoughtful leadership,

good judgment, and a commitment to our seniors’ community.

Fresh perspectives and diverse skills are essential as we

continue to grow and adapt.

Board Nominations for this year must be endorsed by two

members in good standing and submitted to the Board

Secretary, Val Galat, by February 27 th . Forms are available

at the front desk, where they can also be returned once

completed.

This is a meaningful opportunity to help shape the future

of our Centre as we celebrate our past. We hope you will

consider being part of it. .

SSAC Dance

What A Party!

The Big Easy Funk Ensemble had the

dance floor packed all afternoon! This

high energy band paid homage to the rich

musical traditions of New Orleans while

infusing their own distinct west coast

flavour. This was the first afternoon concert/dance and

we were thrilled to have so many of you in attendance

and having such a good time! Jay will invite them to

come back again next year.

Kim Fenton won $76 in our 50/50 draw. Tickets to the

next dance were won by Collene Sand. Congratulations!

Thanks to all the volunteers who pitch in to make these

dances possible. They help with promoting the events,

setting everything up and taking it down again, washing

and ironing the tablecloths, tending bar, serving snacks,

making the beautiful decorations, clearing tables,

playing music between sets . . . you name it - they do it!

Coming up on February 21 st . . . don’t miss Mitch Lazer

and the British Invasion featuring Mitch on drums,

Eddy Erik on guitar and vocals, Bruce Mortimer on bass

and Peter Van Deursen on keyboards. They’ll be playing

all your favourite hits from across the pond. Doors and

the bar open at 6:30 pm and the band will play from

7:00 pm til 10:00 pm.

Looking ahead to March - save the dates on your

calendar for Company B Jazz Band featuring a

harmonizing vocal trio. Inspired by renowned female

harmony groups such as the Andrews Sisters and the

Boswell Sisters, the band offers a vast repertoire that

dates from the 1920s through to the current day, all

performed in classic swing style. This concert is on

March 21 st , doors and bar open at 1:30 pm with the

show running from 2:00 pm until 4:30 pm. Tickets

include British style tea sandwiches and sweet treats.

Tickets are $35 at the SSAC front desk and at A Little

Brit of Heaven or $40 at the door.

On March 28 th we will have an hour long line-dancing

workshop from 5:30 pm. til 6:30 pm followed by an

evening of dancing with one of the Sunshine Coast’s

favourite bands - Blue Western featuring Mike Evans

on guitar and vocals, Archie MacLean on drums and

vocals, Warren Allan on bass and vocals and Bill

Barclay on keyboards and vocals. The line dance

workshop with the dance ticket is $20 in advance or

$25 at the door. If you are only coming to the dance,

the ticket is $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Come

on out and dance your tush off! .

From the Executive Director

Kindness Matters

Did you know that February 15-21 is

Random Acts of Kindness Week?

According to the randomactsofkindness.org

website, when we choose kindness, our

brains light up with oxytocin, dopamine

and CONNECTION (something we love to celebrate

here at the Centre), confirming that kindness is not just

good for the world, it’s good for us!

While kindness should be practiced daily, having a

week to really focus on it reminds us of its importance,

especially when there is so much negativity happening

in the world that we simply cannot control. Making a

personal decision to show compassion, respect, and

empathy – regardless of the actions of others – leaves a

positive impact and can change someone’s outlook for

the better.

Here at the Centre, it is my hope that all our members

are treated with kindness during every interaction with

staff, volunteers and each other, and that the Sechelt

Seniors Activity Centre is known as a place with a

culture of caring and connection.

Today, and during Random Acts of Kindness Week,

I encourage each of you to consider doing something

little (or BIG) for someone else – make eye contact and

smile when someone greets you, compliment a stranger,

let someone else go first, hold a door open for the

person behind you, or practice being a better listener.

Whatever you choose to do, remember to stop and take

a moment to experience how it makes you feel. Let

your brain light up!

On the business side of things, January was a very busy

month that saw us working behind-the-scenes on our

organizational structure, Board governance, financial

systems, year-end processes, a new 50/50 lottery

(launching on February 1 st ) and lots of plans for our

40 th Anniversary, all while continuing to offer activities,

programs and meals for our members. Our Dance

Committee hosted our first afternoon dance which was

extremely well-received, and we launched the sale

of our new red 40 th Anniversary thermal tote

bags, the perfect way to transport your frozen meal

orders! You can purchase yours at the front desk

for only $15 each or 2 for $27.

I am looking forward to having many opportunities

in 2026 to come together and commemorate

40 years as a Society. We invite all our Lifetime

Members to join us at our upcoming Friendship

Tea on Thursday, February 19 th so that we can

celebrate them, offer them an opportunity to

share stories, and acknowledge the roles they have

played (and may still be playing) at the Centre.

While we will provide 2025 highlights and

financials at the Annual General Meeting on

March 25 - , 2026 at 1:30 pm, we are thrilled

to share that we provided more than 30,000

frozen meals in 2025, an increase of 31% over

the previous year. Kudos to our wonderful chefs,

Emily, Jackie and Liz, and the many volunteers that

support our Food Services program!

Lastly, if you are interested in governance

please consider joining our Board of Directors.

Nomination forms will be available at the front

desk and must be submitted to our Board

Secretary (secretary@myssac.com) by Friday,

February 27 th to ensure your name is included for

consideration at the AGM. .

ur new initiative, BC Seniors Online

50/50 was launched February 1 st and is

accessed through SeniorsLottery.ca.

In addition to the Sechelt Seniors

Activity Centre, we have been joined

by four partner seniors’ centres from around the

province: Campbell River, Gibsons, Mackenzie and

Oliver. We hold the BC Gaming license in our name

and will administer the lottery. The partner centres

will sell tickets on-site with handheld devices, and

online ticket buyers will choose which of our five

centres their purchase supports. Not only will this

new partnership benefit more seniors across British

Columbia, but it will also make the monthly jackpot

bigger and more appealing to ticket buyers! Each

month, all five participating centres will receive 30%

of their combined in-house and online ticket sales.

At the SSAC, our proceeds will be enhanced by the

larger jackpots which will attract more ticket buyers

and from the 5% of the total Jackpot that we charge to

administer the lottery. Our funds will continue to be

directed to our affordable lunch program. The other

centres have committed to prioritizing funds being

used to support essential affordable meal programs

and activity services for seniors at their centres. The

hope is that the lottery will expand in 2027 as more

seniors’ centres around the province, currently sitting

on the sideline, are attracted by the success of our

partners.

Tickets are already on sale for this month’s draw

with the sales to be closed at midnight on Thursday,

February 26 th . We encourage you to get your tickets

early to build up the Jackpot and the excitement about

the lottery. Tickets can now be purchased during

opening hours at SSAC. To maximise our sales, we

need the general public to be aware of, and motivated

to participate in the lottery. If you would like to help

by volunteering 2 or 3 hours of your time once a

week or month to sit at a table in teams in a shopping

mall or pub/bar and grill, please give your contact

information in at the front desk, or email Alison at

alison.kowalewski@myssac.com. .

Food For Thought

Emeritus Professor Lecture Series

The well-attended January Emeritus

Professor talk was given by Dr, David

Laycock, Roberts Creek resident and

Emeritus Professor of Political Science at

Simon Fraser University, who has written

extensively on Canadian party politics, democratic

political theory, analysis of ideologies, and populism

in Canada. For this talk he focussed on populism and

the effects that it can have on citizens and political

life alike.

We are pleased to announce that, due to the success of

his first lecture, David will be our guest speaker again

on March 18.

His next talk is entitled: Taking Democracy seriously

in Canada and the USA and promises to be both

timely and educational!

The lectures are held on the third Wednesday of each

month at 2:00 pm in the Lunch Room of the Seniors

Activity Centre. They are free of charge, open to dropins,

and do not require membership in the Centre.

Donations are gratefully accepted in support of our

subsidized lunch program.

Medical equipment loans are available through

the Sechelt Hospital Loan Cupboard. It is

a volunteer-run organization that provides

a wide array of equipment from canes and

walkers to bedrails and commodes, all free

of charge, for a period of up to two months.

For people dealing with medical issues,

when stress levels are already high, being

able to get the equipment they need is

Feature

One Year!

It’s hard for me to believe, but January 13 th

marked 1 year since I started working as the

SSAC’s Front Desk Administrator. It has been

quite a year, and I just wanted to take a moment

to mention a few of my personal highlights.

Mark Trevis and his Ukulele Group kindly asked me to

join them in Feb. to sing a song at the Valentine’s Tea in

the Lunchroom. A few days later, an Earthquake shook

up Richard, Gill and I during our Managers Meeting –

not something I will ever forget.

In April, we started renovations on the former Lounge,

as we moved into a new Office space. It is much more

bright, cheerful, and has a view. Most importantly, it

relieved much of the congestion in the front hallway,

and we’ve enjoyed the positive response from

Members.

Global News did a segment on the Centre in June, to

help promote our 50/50 Draw, which was implemented

to help keep the affordable meal prices reasonable for

Seniors. Our President Richard, as well as our amazing

Chef Emily did interviews, and everyone was very

excited to watch the news clip, once it aired.

In July, we got a huge new freezer, and our frozen

meals sales have been doing very well. This is a vitally

important service for our Members, and it is wonderful

to know that we are providing delicious, nutritious,

affordable meals, and they are being thoroughly

enjoyed. Way to go, Emily, Liz, Jackie and Crew! You are

all so incredibly talented, as well as lovely People.

Our amazing new Executive Director Vicki Raw started

in September, and by all accounts, she has made so

many things about the Centre so much better, in a very

short time. We are very fortunate to have her here. Not

only does she bring a wealth of experience with her, but

she is extremely good with People. She makes us all feel

truly appreciated and valued.

The pre-Halloween Disco Dance in October was an

absolute blast! A bunch of us Ladies went together,

and danced almost non-stop. A huge thanks to John

and Krystyna for playing the BEST songs for us – we

look forward to your next event!

Several times last year, Maryanne Brabander asked

me to come and sing during Memory Café. She

knows that I have performed in Fundraisers here

at the SSAC for over 10 years, and nothing warms

my heart more than singing the “Oldies” for Seniors.

These are just a few of the best parts of this past

year here, for me. I would like to extend a huge

thanks to all the Volunteers who work alongside

me, for their patience, kindness, and time. As I have

mentioned before, this place could not function

without all of your efforts! I have really enjoyed

getting to know you all, and I look forward to the

year ahead.

One last thing – Gill Smith – you are so appreciated!

You go above and beyond every single day – always

willing to help with everything, and with a genuine

smile on your face. You ROCK! .

Velma Madeline Marsh

May 11, 1929 - October 25, 2025

Val was a shining light at the

Centre – always laughing and

smiling – and making others

laugh and smile with her.

A long-time volunteer,

Val was awarded a Life

Membership in 2023. Val

loved jigsaw puzzles, Emily’s

Hot Reuben Sandwiches and

spending time with her Craft

group where she always had time to unknot someone’s

yarn. Val knitted toques for Canada Comfort and

outfits for HIV babies among many other donations.

Val leaves behind her daughters, Donna and Janet, 2

grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren along with her

caring SSAC family. .

Massimo (Max) Bellisomo

January 26, 1953 - January 21, 2026

Max Bellisomo passed away

on his own terms after a

long illness, fought with

courage and dignity.

Beloved son of Giacomina

Suardi (Italy); husband of

Jill; father of Robert (Nona),

Andres (Lisa), Luca, and

Carlo; and Nonno to Emma,

Katie, Ava, and Luca.

Sadly missed and remembered by extended family and

friends in Italy, South Africa, and Canada.

Forevery missed, always in our hearts.

Our grateful thanks to Dr. Carol Bosch and all the

medical personnel for their care and compassion over

the last few years. No service by request. .

Eric Katzer

May 1942 - January 2026

Eric passed away peacefully

on January 14, 2026.

Survived by his wife Eleanor

and her four adult children,

Carla, Aaron, Stuart, Grant,

and five grandchildren.

Eric was a proud Canadian

citizen for many years as a

quiet peace-loving man who

was a gentleman to everyone.

He enjoyed his bridge games, tennis, travelling the

world and crabbing. He loved all his pets and his family

so much. He will be missed by all who knew him. N
