A flock of the world’s most 

endangered gull species has 

finally returned to McCormacks 

Bay, and Tanya Jenkins is 

determined to make them stay. 

The black-billed gulls nested 

in McCormacks Bay for decades, 

but unleashed dogs and 

overgrown islands drove them 

away. 

About seven years ago, the 

flooded foundations of the 

derelict former PricewaterhouseCoopers 

building on 

Armagh St provided a temporary 

refuge for the birds. They 

have nested there every season 

since – until now. 

Jenkins, who is chair of the 

Ihutai Avon Heathcote Estuary 

Trust, said the conditions at the 

PwC site were atrocious.

“The water in there was 

putrid. They were nesting on 

unstable concrete,” she said. 

“If it was windy or rainy, the 

chicks would fall out of their 

nest and drown in the disgusting 

water at the base.”

A hub for water recreation is 

being envisioned to revitalise a 

103-year-old boating shed. 

The historic building is currently 

sitting in a storage area at 

Lyttelton Port Company, with the 

Governors Bay Jetty Restoration 

Trust planning to relocate it to a 

site next to the bay’s jetty. 

Once moved, it will be placed 

on a purpose-built wooden 

platform and renovated into 

a community hub for schools 

and people to use for on-water 

activities such as kayaking and 

paddleboarding. 

The building will include a 

kitchen, a bathroom and displays 

outlining the shed’s history. 

A second building will be 

built behind the hub to serve as 

a storage shed for kayaks and 

paddleboards, which will be 

available for public hire. 

“It will be self-funding going 

forward,” said trust secretary 

Louisa Eades. 

She estimated the project 

would cost between $500,000 and 

$600,000. 

The project has already 

received a $51,000 heritage grant 

from the Parkinson Memorial 

Park Trust, which will cover 

materials for the new platform.

Tagging down in most areas, but 

reports of graffiti up in Sumner 


Statistics show graffiti tagging 

on Banks Peninsula has 

dropped in the last two years. 

The city council runs a 

programme called Friends 

of Graffiti which encourages 

people to actively spot and send 

images of graffiti through its 

issue reporting tool, Snap Send 

Solve. 

It then aims to track down 

taggers and incentivises them 

to put their creative instincts 

towards designing murals, 

rather than vandalism. 

Graffiti tagging in Banks 

Peninsula and Sumner was 

among the most complained 

about issues in 2025. 

There were 301 complaints 

of graffiti last year in Banks 

Peninsula, compared to 342 the 

previous year. 

However in Sumner, graffiti 

complaints increased in 2025, 

from 78 in 2024 to 131. 

Graffiti decreased in Heathcote 

from 82 to 69 as well as in 

Ferrymead from 140 to 72, 88 to 

46 in Mt Pleasant and 44 to 14 in 

Redcliffs.

resources, it’s just more people 

need to be aware of them and 

use them, if they (council) don’t 

have the information, they 

can’t allocate the resources and 

funding to take care of it.” 

Single vehicle crash 

in Governors Bay 

An accident prone corner between 

Governors Bay and Rapaki has 

struck again after a single vehicle 

crash on Saturday. The motorist 

was driving towards Rapaki when he 

missed what is coloquially known 

as Gardners Corner. He drove up the 

bank and the car rolled onto its roof. 

The Governors Bay Volunteer Fire 

Brigade was called out at 11.30pm. 

The driver was helped out of the car 

and sustained minor injuries. Fire 

chief Doug Burt said the brigade is 

regularly called out to the corner. 

50th anniversary for 

Okains Bay Museum 

The Okains Bay Māori and Colonial 

Museum will mark 50 years of 

hosting South Island's biggest and 

longest-running Waitangi Day commemorations 

on February 6. It is set 

to be a fun-filled day of free family

Lighting plan the next step to 

earning dark sky certification 


An initiative to turn Banks 

Peninsula into a dark sky 

reserve has taken another step 

forward. 

Banks Peninsula MP Vanessa 

Weenink asked the Te Pātaka o 

Rākaihautū Banks 

Peninsula Community 

Board 

on Monday to 

request the city 

council introduce 

a lighting plan 

across the area.

She asked the city council to 

write to Chris Bishop, the Government 

minister responsible 

for RMA reform, seeking a plan 

change exemption.

council would be willing to write 

the letter should it go through 

the council process,” she said on 

Monday. 

Once the city council has 

introduced the lighting plan, 

Banks Peninsula will meet all 

the requirement to qualify for 

dark sky reserve status.

“That’s a work in progress,” she

Dark sky areas limit light pollution, 

increasing the visibility of 

stars while supporting conservation, 

human health, tourism and 

reduced energy use. 

Achieving certification would 

require residents to be more 

mindful of lighting at night. 

This could 

include using dimmer 

light bulbs, 

installing shielded 

light fixtures and 

minimising outdoor 

lighting. 

Weenink carried 

out a survey last 

year to gauge residents’ 

support for 

Luca Devescovi 

the initiative. 

The proposal received strong 

backing, with 85% of the 300 

respondents supporting the 

campaign. 

“There is tremendous community 

support for a dark sky 

reserve from people living out 

there,” she said in August. 

Said Devescovi: “We are 

committed to fighting light 

pollution because it has an impact 

on wildlife habitat and many 

other areas. This is our mission. 

“It’s not to impose on anyone 

but we want to educate the 

community.” 

Devescovi’s measurements 

show Banks Peninsula already 

has a dark sky, with minimal 

impact from light pollution. 

Said Weenink: “The idea is to 

preserve what we have already.” 

New Zealand already has five 

areas with dark sky certification. 

New Flora Courts 

named to honour

have been named after 

community stalwart, volunteer 

and advocate Flora “Flo” 

McGregor. 

The Flora Courts will be dedicated 

at the official opening of 

the newly revamped Lyttelton 

Recreation Grounds on Saturday,

Canterbury Yacht 

and Motor Club 

in 1923 as a social 

hub for members 

Louisa Eades 

and a place to store equipment. 

When the club moved to Naval 

Point in the mid-1950s, the 

building was sold to the Lyttelton 

Sea Scouts. 

The sea scouts used the building 

from the 1960s to the 1990s. 

After they moved to a new den, 

it became a clubroom and sailing 

instruction space for the 

Dampier Bay Maritime Club. 

The development of Te Ana 

Marina in 2020 forced the 

building’s removal, and it has 

been stored at Lyttelton Port 

Company since. 

The club searched for a 

suitable site in Lyttelton, but 

when none could be found, it

Jetty Restoration Trust. 

The club wanted the building’s 

use to remain on the 

waterfront, making the jetty a 

natural fit. 

Eades helped establish a committee 

to work on the project, 

though it has largely been on 

the back burner while the jetty 

restoration remained the main 

focus. 

The development received 

resource consent in late 2023. 

OCEL – an engineering company 

specialising in marine 

structures – is now finalising 

the design, which Eades said 

is expected to be completed 

within the next two months. 

OCEL will then apply for 

building consent. A slip on Jetty 

Rd will also need to be repaired 

before work can begin, allowing 

trucks to access the site. 

Eades is aiming for the relocation 

of the building and 

construction of the platform to 

start mid-year, with renovation 

and extension work starting by 

the end of the year. 

“It’s exciting – things are starting 

to happen,” she said. 

“I think there will be a lot 

of interest in the renovation. 

It will bring people together 

to turn it into an amazing 

community space.”

Rare gulls lured back

About four years ago, the 

trust decided to restore the 

McCormacks Bay islands in an 

effort to lure the endangered 

gulls back. 

It obtained approval from 

the city council and received a 

$5000 grant from the Sumner 

Ferrymead Foundation, which 

was used to pay contractors to 

clean up the overgrown islands. 

The city council also supplied 

a truckload of shells for the gulls 

to nest on. 

Volunteers spent two Sundays 

in September wading through 

low tide to carry small bags of 

shells to the islands. 

“It was a tremendous job, it 

was raining and it was horrible, 

but we were so determined to do 

it before the nesting season and 

that paid off,” she said. 

The trust had expected it 

would take at least a year for the 

gulls to return, but birds were 

seen scouting the bay as early 

as November, and by December 

more than 500 had nested on the 

restored islands. 

There are currently fledglings 

in the estuary – young, fully 

feathered birds that have 

recently left the nest and Jenkins 

said their presence indicates a 

successful nesting season. 

During the winter months, the 

trust will continue maintaining 

the islands and adding more 

shells to attract the birds back 

for next year’s nesting season. 

Jenkins will give a 

presentation on birds in the 

estuary, focusing on blackbilled 

gulls, at the Mt Pleasant 

Community Centre on Sunday at 

11am. 

The presentation aims to 

raise awareness of the gulls and 

encourage residents to speak up 

when dogs are walked around 

the estuary off-leash.

From Bonobo to the Body: A Local Story of Resilience 

and Renewal 

Many people in Christchurch will 

remember Annelies Basten from 

Bonobo Café in Sumner. Today, 

her work looks very different. 

We spoke with her about the 

path from hospitality to nervous 

system healing. 

Q: Most people know you from 

Bonobo Café. How did that 

chapter of your life come to an 

end? 

A: “Bonobo Café was the dream 

my then partner Deane and I built 

together. We imagined it, created it 

from the ground up, and ran it with 

kindness at the centre. It became 

much more than a café, it became 

a place people felt safe. 

What wasn’t visible was the toll. 

Hospitality demands long hours, 

constant responsibility, and rarely 

allows real rest. Over time, my body 

began sending clear signals. I 

burned out, developed shingles, 

and eventually had to let go of 

something I loved deeply. 

That ending changed the direction 

of my life.” 

Q: What happened once Bonobo 

was behind you? 

A: “A lot of delayed stress 

surfaced. I experienced nerve pain, 

anxiety that didn’t seem connected 

to any one event, and eventually 

severe insomnia while at a 10-day 

Vipassana meditation retreat. The 

irony was, I went into this wanting 

clarity about what to do next, with 

the idea of helping people with 

insomnia, due to my first awful 

experience with sleep loss. Back 

then, I tried to manage it medically 

and became dependent on 

Zopiclone. This time, I knew I had 

to do it differently.” 

Q: What did you do this time? 

A: “A year of deep healing 

followed. I chose to move through 

the insomnia without medication. 

During that time, I deepened my 

meditation practice and added 

psycho-somatic therapy modalities 

to my training, approaches that 

recognise how stress and survival 

patterns live in the body. 

Slowly, my nervous system 

settled. Sleep returned, first very 

light, to now sleeping deeply again. 

I actually fall asleep as soon as my 

head hits the pillow! I feel very 

grateful.” 

Q: Is this how Project Pure 

came into being? 

A: “Yes. I created Project Pure 

based on the healing and learnings 

from that year. Everything is 

centred around nervous system 

healing. The focus is on helping 

people release long-held stress

patterns so the body can return to 

balance and clarity. 

Many people are living at a pace 

that keeps their systems 

permanently alert. Over time, that 

shows up as exhaustion, anxiety, 

poor sleep, and a sense of 

disconnection. My work is about 

supporting the body to come out of 

survival mode.” 

Q: What do people usually 

come to you for? 

A: “Most people come because 

their system won’t settle. That 

might show up as insomnia, 

difficulty falling or staying asleep, 

or as anxiety, low mood, emotional 

overwhelm, or a feeling of being 

stuck despite having tried many 

things. Others arrive during life 

transitions such as burnout or 

perimenopause, when their usual 

coping strategies no longer work. 

What connects all of these 

experiences is a nervous system 

that has been under pressure for 

too long. 

Deep Release Therapy (DRT) 

works directly with the body, 

helping stored stress and survival 

responses unwind. As the nervous 

system settles, people often notice 

more calm, clarity, emotional 

stability, and a natural return of 

deeper sleep.” 

Q: What does Project Pure offer 

locally? 

A: “For insomnia specifically 

there are two programs; a selfpaced 

self-study option or a 6-week 

intensive with weekly one-on-one, 

in person DRT sessions.

We work with the breath, body 

awareness and heat to regulate the 

nervous system. 

I am especially excited about 

these classes, as yoga has made a 

huge impact in my life.” 

Q: What would you like readers 

to take away from your story? 

A: “That symptoms are 

meaningful. They’re signals that 

something needs care and 

attention. When people create 

space to respond to what their body 

is asking for, change becomes 

possible.”

The side faces third-placed St Albans at 

home at Heathcote Domain at 10.30am 

in what captain Tyler Lortan described 

as a must-win match. 

“The only way we get to the semi-finals 

is if we win our next two games,” he 

said. 

“Hopefully the guys are revved up and 

raring to go on Saturday.” 

The match comes after a 47-run loss 

to East Shirley last weekend, which saw 

Heathcote slip to sixth on the one-day 

Metro Premiership ladder. 

East Shirley posted 224/7 from its 50 

overs, with Jeremy Duncan anchoring 

the innings with a 

captain’s knock of 90 from 

120 balls.

penny is dropping and we are getting 

better, which is good,” he said. 

Lortan said St Albans was always a 

tough opponent, with handy bowlers 

and a strong batting line-up. 

“It all boils down to who wants it more 

on the day,” he said. 

“We’ve got so much talent floating 

around at the club at the moment, it’s 

just about trying to structure that talent 

and get them situationally aware. 

“We’re going to focus this week on 

trying to get the guys into the right 

mindset to be able to execute their skills 

in a somewhat play-off game.”

its place in US performance-car 

history alongside other all-

When the first-generation 

Mustang took the automotive 

world by storm in 1964, it was a 

genuine game changer, offering 

an affordable and accessible 

high-performance coupe for the 

masses. 

Sixty years after its debut, the 

all-new seventh-generation Ford 

Mustang has arrived, and it is the 

most exhilarating yet. 

Included in the range for the 

first time is the Dark Horse – the 

first new Mustang performance 

series in 21 years. It comes 

locked and loaded with the most 

powerful performance ever 

offered from a new 5.0-litre V8. 

There is plenty to like about the 

unmistakable modern chiselled 

looks of this car to complement 

its heritage-inspired design. 

Three versions of this latest 

Mustang are available here with 

the $92,990 Fastback GT the first 

model out of the starters gates, 

with the convertible a $12k 

option. 

Rounding out the range is the 

Dark Horse auto that gallops into 

buyer contention at $114,990, 

and there is $116,990 six-speed 

manual for those that fancy one. 

Providing the large and 

strong heartbeat for this current 

Mustang is the fourth-generation 

Coyote V8 engine. 

Its active-valve performance 

exhaust system enables the GT 

Fastback to deliver 362kW at 

7250rpm and 567Nm of torque. 

The Dark Horse produces 

the same amount of torque but 

brings another 11kw of power to 

the performance table. 

The system’s delivers a 

custom-V8 sound with the ability 

to close the valves to dial back the 

amount of noise. 

This extra urge has been 

unlocked by Ford’s new dualfuel, 

high-pressure direct 

injection and low-pressure port 

fuel injection – delivering more 

concentrated low-end torque, 

high-rpm power, and improved 

fuel efficiency.

There isn’t a lot left on the 

automotive planet these day 

possessing such an addictive 

sound track, and even fewer, 

as vehicle manufacturers 

move at lighting speed toward 

electrification. 

A 10-speed automatic with a 

wide ratio span is the prefect 

gear-changing buddy for this 

mighty motor and the architect 

of its sharper throttle responses 

and quick fire gear changes. 

Everything is done at pace in this 

car and that includes swift, and 

well-considered gear changes. 

The cabin is no space capsule 

with rear seat space tight and 

not overly accessible. With the 

low slug seating position I found 

myself looking up and over 

the dash, even with seat height 

adjustment maxed out. 

The steeply raked roofline 

means rear visibility isn’t as 

good as it could be either. The 

back seats are cramped and 

not a space where adults would 

want to spend at lot of time, but 

okay for smaller children. 

These are the compromises 

that come with high 

performance two door USA 

made coupes, but haven’t 

stopped it becoming a world top 

seller in its class. 

A modern, interior has a 12.4- 

inch digital instrument cluster 

that can be customised to show 

different animated designs on 

the centre stack. Settings are 

easily adjustable by swiping 

the graphic to rotate the car 

virtually. 

This digital instrument cluster 

flows seamlessly into a 13.2-inch 

centre stack behind the same 

piece of integrated glass, angled 

towards the driver. Together, 

they create a fully immersive 

digital experience mimicking a 

fighter jet cockpit – but in a realworld 

sports car. 

In-vehicle entertainment is 

laid on by the latest B&O sound 

system, pumping out through 12 

speakers and a subwoofer, not 

the canine variety. 

A standout feature for night 

driving is the auto-levelling 

headlights and automatic high 

beam, both of which reduce 

driver workload after dark. 

Stopping power is quick and 

decisive thanks to the excellent 

19-inch Brembo six-piston front 

brakes – true showstoppers in 

every sense of the word. 

The Mustang Dark Horse 

benefits from unique chassis 

tuning, larger rear sway bars 

and heavy-duty front shocks. 

Steering response and grip 

are further enhanced by a 

K-brace, improving handling 

and feedback. The adaptive 

shock absorbers monitor wheel 

and tyre movement up to 1000 

times per second, striving – and 

largely succeeding – to deliver 

optimal traction across a variety 

of driving surfaces. 

The Mustang dazzles 

with razor-sharp handling, 

communicative steering and 

impressive road-holding agility. 

The biggest downside is a noisy, 

unyielding ride below 70km/h 

in urban driving, amplified over 

rough road surfaces. This car 

prioritises exceptional power 

and handling, and ride comfort 

takes a back seat. 

That low-speed abrasiveness 

won’t bother Mustang faithful, 

who will see it as an integral part 

of the car’s character.
