Chef who
in strife
A chef who helped police
gone bust.
The Smokin’ Que co-owner
Glenn Manning has put his
business owing $247,000 in
voluntary liquidation.
In August 2024, Manning
was operating a food truck
at the Hornby Hub when he
became embroiled in a
police incident.
Police had handcuffed
and restrained one of
two youths on the run
after they were spotted
in a stolen vehicle.
An officer with a
police dog caught one
of them and yelled out
Glenn Manning
to Manning for
assistance.
“He yelled out
‘oi come here',"
Manning told The
Star at the time.
"At first, I looked
around thinking
he must be talking
to another cop or
The officer threw him a
pair of handcuffs and told
him to put them on one of the
captured youths so he could
offender.
Intersection
upgrade
draws online
complaints
DYLAN SMITS
A busy intersection has finally
got a multi-million dollar
upgrade.
But already there are
complaints about the number of
right turning arrows it has.
The new traffic lights at
the Harewood, Breens and
Gardiners Rds intersection does
not have right-turning arrows
when entering the intersection
from Breens or Gardiners Rds.
It does have arrows on both
sides of Harewood Rd entering
the intersection, but the lack of
arrows on all entrances to the
intersection has attracted a large
number of online complaints to
the city council and Star News
Facebook pages.
The intersection upgrade
and a signalised pedestrian
crossing at Harewood School
has a $5.5 million combined
budget.
Said Paul Anthony Mccall
on Facebook: "Why don't
they put turning arrows at all
traffic lights? Surely this would
make roads safer? Better money
spent than on speed humps.”
Brian O’Neil commented:
“Crazy that another set of lights
have been installed without
right turning arrows, good luck
out there people.”
A city council spokesperson
responded to the complaints on
Facebook.
AA Insurance stops issuing new policies in Woodend
BY KATE NEWTON
AA Insurance says its decision
to no longer issue policies in
Woodend is due to reaching its
maximum exposure to seismic
risk – not a climate changerelated
hazard.
AA stopped offering new policies
in two other Canterbury
postcodes for the same reason.
Said head of underwriting
Dee Naidu: “These temporary
restrictions are in place
because AA Insurance has
reached the maximum level of
exposure to seismic risk we can
responsibly take on in these
areas.”
That exposure would
naturally shift over time as customers
moved, “so there will be
periods where we are able to
accept new policies, provided
we remain within our exposure
limit”.
Current policy-holders were
not affected and would be able
to renew their policies, and
transfer them if they sold their
home, Naidu said.
Last week, AA Insurance
halted new home, business and
landlord insurance policies in
Westport, due to the high flood
risk the town faces.
Woodend real estate agent and
resident Amanda Newson said
the decision was “baffling”.
She became aware of the
insurer’s decision when a purchaser
with an existing AA
Insurance policy was told she
could not get cover on a Woodend
house she was buying.
AA Insurance told the
buyer that was because of an
“increased risk of a natural
event happening”, Newson said.
To find out more, Newson
attempted to get a quote for her
own house and initially received
the same response, with the
company even referring her to
the Natural Hazards Commission
for more detail about the
nature of the “increased” risk.
“They (NHC) went through
all their latest updates around
natural hazard risk that they
have - they could find nothing
that pinpointed any increased
natural hazard risk for
Woodend,” Newson said.
Most other major insurance
companies are still providing
cover in Woodend.
- RNZ
AA Insurance says a growing risk of a
natural event happening in Woodend is
behind its decision to halt new policies
for the town.
Turning down the lights to
boost dark sky ambitions
An experiment in dimming
streetlights could help turn
Selwyn’s high country into a new
drawcard for stargazers.
The Selwyn District Council is
installing a new lighting control
system in Castle Hill Village as
part of a push towards earning
dark sky accreditation.
The technology, expected to be
in place by the end of May, will
allow streetlights to be dimmed
or adjusted depending on
conditions.
The district council estimates
dark sky status could generate up
to $13.5 million a year in visitor
spending across the high country,
said council executive director of
community services and facilities
Denise Kidd.
“This is a huge opportunity to
make the most of our stunning
high-country landscape and its
amazing view of the stars,” she
said.
“Dark skies are a growing
attraction – we’ve seen through
Tourism New Zealand that 70% of
people visiting New Zealand are
interested in star gazing experiences.
This innovative technology
is a key step to start making the
most of that.”
The move follows support
from Arthur’s Pass and Castle
Hill Village residents and businesses
during consultation on
the district council’s Long-Term
Plan 2024–34. It also aligns with
A view of the stars between Castle Hill and Arthur’s Pass, where the Selwyn District Council hopes to establish dark sky reserves.
the district council’s
Kai Aku Rika
Economic Development
Strategy,
adopted last year,
which identified
dark sky tourism
as a potential
growth area.
Technology Denise Kidd
company Felicity
Smart Infrastructure NZ is
supplying the wireless control
system, while the district council
is funding the $50,000 upgrade
of existing streetlights in Castle
Hill Village, as agreed through
the long-term plan process.
The system will give greater
control over light levels and
operating times, and includes AI
technology that can respond to
traffic volumes, allowing lights
to dim when roads are quieter
while maintaining safety.
The district council will work
with residents over coming
months to decide how the system
should operate in practice.
“It’s exciting to see how the
trial goes, with the potential
for this technology to help
with dark sky accreditation
and energy savings to further
reduce costs in other parts of
the district,” Kidd said.
Felicity New Zealand sales manager
Soren Damsgaard said the
company had seen similar systems
deliver significant benefits
elsewhere.
“We are excited to get this project
under way,” he said.
“Across our New Zealand
projects, we have seen how intelligent,
traffic-responsive lighting
can cut wasted energy and carbon
emissions by 40%, while still keeping
people safe on the roads.
“Castle Hill builds directly on
that experience – it’s another step
in a wider shift towards smarter,
cleaner and more communityfocused
streetlighting.”
Passers-by stop woman
from falling off bridge
A visibly distressed woman
standing on the edge of the
Waimakiriri River Bridge was
rescued by two passing men in a
truck before she fell. The woman
thanked her rescuers in a social
media post late afternoon on
Monday. In the post, she said the
two men held onto her until police
arrived. The woman said she was
then taken to an inpatient facility.
Water sports hub planned
for Governors Bay
Plans are under way to create a
$500,000 water recreation hub
at Governors Bay by restoring a
103-year-old boating shed. The
Governors Bay Jetty Restoration
Trust wants to relocate a shed
from Lyttelton Port to a site beside
the jetty, where it would be placed
on a new wooden platform and
renovated. The hub would support
community water activities such
as kayaking. Another building will
be set up behind the hub to serve
as a storage shed for kayaks and
Manning was operating The
Smokin’ Que as a barbecue-style
food truck which was being set
up during the incident for the
Christchurch Night Market at
The Hub Hornby.
Ember and Ashes was later
opened as a smokehouse
barbecue restaurant in
Addington, which has since run
into financial trouble.
The company, registered in
2020, was placed in liquidation
by Manning and joint
shareholder Hannah
Comyns.
Manning did not
return calls to The Star
this week.
Insolvency Matters
insolvency practitioner
Brenton Hunt was
appointed the
liquidator and found
in his first report on
January 29 the business was in
a total estimated shortfall to all
creditors of $247,000.
Debts include about $30,000
owed in staff wages and holiday
pay, about $150,000 to 29
unsecured creditors and $3500
Brenton Hunt
to Inland Revenue.
Hunt said the director took
professional advice before
placing the company in
voluntary liquidation.
The restaurant never traded
as well as expected, he said.
"With the slowdown in the
economy the spend from events
drastically reduced in the last
12 months.
"Payments to [the] landlord
had fallen behind and they
eventually issued a Property
Law Act notice for unpaid
rents."
The company bank
account was in overdraft
funds at liquidation.
He said it was too
early to confirm whether
enough assets would be
realised for creditors to
receive payment, but this
was unlikely at this stage.
Restaurant and catering
plant and equipment
would be sold, but many of the
three motor vehicles and two
trailers owned by the company
were highly financed.
A date has yet to be set, but
it could take a year for the
liquidation to be completed.
‘Drivers will be able to
find gaps in the traffic’
› From Page 1
"If a green right-turn arrow
was provided on Gardiners
Rd or Breens Rd, this would
require an extra signal phase.”
The spokesperson said an
additional signal phase would
increase the overall wait time
at the intersection for all
vehicles.
"At many times of the day the
traffic volumes on Gardiners
Rd and Breens Rd do not
warrant the need for a green
right-turn arrow, as drivers
will be able to find gaps in the
oncoming one lane of traffic.”
Christchurch has fewer green
arrows compared to other
major cities.
City council data from June
last year showed out of 288
intersections, 147 had at least
one signalised arrow to turn
right.
Adding right-turn arrows
can also be a significant cost
with a city council report last
year suggesting upgrades could
range in cost from $150,000 to
$850,000.
The cost depends on how
many right arrows are added
and how difficult underground
recabling is at a particular
intersection.
“The new traffic signals and
other safety improvements
on Harewood Rd will make
travelling through the area
safer for all road users,
including students travelling
to and from local schools,”
said city council planning
and delivery manager Jacob
Bradbury.
In addition to the new
traffic signals, the work on
and around Harewood Rd
has included installing a new
signalised pedestrian crossing
and safety improvements
at Harewood School and on
Stanleys Rd, widening the
pedestrian refuge island at the
Wooldridge Rd intersection and
a new pedestrian crossing on
Waimakariri Rd.
“We know these works
have been disruptive for
local businesses, schools and
residents.
“We want to thank the
community for their patience
while we’ve made these
improvements, particularly
during the super week when
the intersection was closed,”
said Bradbury.
Work in the area will
continue until March 6
while the remaining water
pipe replacement work is
completed. Some traffic
management will remain in
place.
The left v right battle continues:
The division among city
councillors was made clear
during a debate over
freezing the pay of
council company executives.
Dylan Smits reports
Heathcote Ward city councillor
Nathaniel Herz Jardine passed
his first ever amendment
last week but it did not come
without controversy.
A majority of city councillors
in a 9-5 vote backed his
amendment
to ask
Christchurch
City Holdings
Ltd to
investigate
the possibility
of a zero pay
increase for the
executives and
directors of its
companies.
However, there were
notable votes against,
including the right-leaning
Mayor Phil Mauger, deputy
Nathaniel
Herz Jardine
mayor Victoria Henstock and
finance committee chair Sam
MacDonald.
The chief executives of the
four infrastructure-based,
ratepayer-owned companies –
Christchurch Airport, Lyttelton
Port Company, Orion and
Enable – all earn more than
$850,000 a year.
The city council owns the
companies through CCHL.
The amendment was
included in the annual letter
of expectation to CCHL, which
provides city councillors an
opportunity to outline strategic
priorities, financial targets, and
governance requirements for
the coming financial year.
After the meeting, Herz
Jardine, a left-leaning The
People’s Choice member, said
he was thrilled to get a clear
majority for “fiscal common
sense”.
“A rates cap is coming, and
residents have told me that we
need to find other ways to cut
our cloth before we start talking
about cutting services. That's
what this is all about.”
Herz Jardine said he is
looking forward
to working
with CCHL to
implement the
pause on pay
rises.
"The fact is
that every extra
Graeme Sumner
dollar spent
on executive
remuneration
is a dollar from the pocket of
ratepayers.”
earned $881,237,
followed by
Orion Group
chief Nigel
$880,000, while
Enable chief Nigel Barbour
Johnathan Eele
When asked
by The Star
what actions
would be taken
in response
to the amendment, CCHL
spokesperson Sue Taylor said
Still going strong at 64
At 64, Gerry has no plans to slow
down. As a warehouse manager, his
days involve constant movement –
walking kilometres across concrete
floors, checking stock, directing his
team, solving problems on his feet.
“I’ve been doing this work for
decades,” Gerry says. “Standing
still isn’t part of the job description.”
But lately, his shoulder had
been making itself known. A
persistent, dull ache that followed
him through his shifts and home
again. His knees, too, had started
grumbling after long days in heavy
work boots.
“You notice it more as you get
older,” he admits. “That end-ofday
feeling where everything’s had
enough.”
Gerry tried various approaches.
Some helped briefly. Others he
wasn’t keen on long-term. Nothing
quite gave him what he was looking
for – something that could keep up
with his demanding days.
Then one morning, flicking
through the local paper over
breakfast, an article caught his
attention. It featured Koru FX, a
natural cream made in New Zealand
that was gaining popularity among
active Kiwis.
“I’m not usually one for trying
new things,” Gerry admits. “But
something about it being natural
appealed to me. And local – that
mattered.”
He picked up a bottle from his
pharmacy that weekend.
The first thing Gerry noticed was
the sensation – an initial warmth
from the cream, followed by a
cooling feeling that seemed to settle
in. He applied it to his shoulder
before his Monday shift.
“By smoko, I realised I wasn’t
thinking about my shoulder,” he
recalls. “Usually it’s there in the
background, this constant dull
aching. But I was just focused on
work.”
Now Koru FX has become part
of Gerry’s routine. Mornings before
work, he applies it to his shoulder.
After particularly long shifts, his
knees get attention too.
“It’s the consistency that
impresses me,” he explains. “Day
after day, it keeps doing its job so I
can keep doing mine.”
The cream’s blend of 16 natural
ingredients includes arnica and
mānuka oil for soothing support,
while black pepper helps the
formula absorb deeply. Peppermint
provides that distinctive cooling
sensation Gerry has come to
appreciate.
For Gerry, staying active isn’t
just about work – it’s about identity.
The warehouse team relies on him.
He takes pride in being present,
capable, hands-on.
“Some blokes my age are
winding down,” he says. “But
I’m not ready for that. I like being
useful. I like that the young ones
still come to me when there’s a
problem to solve.”
His colleagues have noticed
Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch
the difference. Where Gerry
might once have been rubbing his
shoulder by afternoon, now he’s
moving through the warehouse
with his usual energy.
“One of the lads asked what my
secret was,” Gerry laughs. “Told
him about the Koru FX. Pretty sure
his dad’s using it now too.”
He still needs to get his shoulder
situation fully sorted but Gerry
plans to keep the cream in his
routine.
“It’s become like my work boots
– just part of getting ready for the
day,” he reflects. “I recommend
it to anyone who wants to keep
going. Why slow down if you don’t
have to?”
Chief executives pay in spotlight
the company was unable to
provide comment as it awaits
the final letter of expectation
which will then be considered
by its board.
It is hardly the first time
left and right-leaning city
councillors have fought over
the autonomy of CCHL.
In a close 8-7 vote in
December 2023, city councillors
voted against a proposal to give
the CCHL board more autonomy
over the asset
portfolio.
Mauger and
MacDonald
supported the
move, which
could have
potentially
paved the way
for partial or
full strategic
asset sales.
The city council’s role in
union disputes at the port
has also been a matter of
contention.
The long-running battle over
CCHL and its companies will
continue with
Mauger and
MacDonald
supporting the
idea of selling
Enable.
Herz Jardine,
32, is a first time
politician after
winning the
Heathcote Ward
Phil Mauger
Sam MacDonald
The Lyttelton Port is run by a ratepayer-owned company.
by 1491 votes in the October
local body elections.
He got his start in local
politics as the manager of
Living Wage Movement
Canterbury which helped
pressure the city council to pay
its contractors a living wage.
“I think that background
has informed the things I
find important. When you're
working in that low pay space,
and you're talking to people
who are working 50 to 60 hours
a week and still can't afford to
get decent food for their kids
or heat their flat. Those are the
issues that are really important
for me,” he said.
During the meeting,
MacDonald said city councillors
have to be careful not to “vilify”
the chief executives.
“We have seen a $450m uplift
in the value of companies in the
last year alone. I will remind
PHOTOS: GETTY
you, when things go wrong with
CE’s, they go horribly wrong.”
In response, Herz-Jardine told
The Star his amendment was
not about vilifying individual
executives.
“I find it really hard to
understand how you could feel
really bad for someone who
gets paid more than $850,000 a
year two years in a row.”
Herz Jardine said the vote
shows a clear philosophical
difference between city
councillors on publicly-owned
assets.
“It's really important that
the public owns and controls
public infrastructure. I just
simply don't believe that the
corporate world and the market
is the best way to make all of
these decisions on things like
executive pay.”
The different perspective
of others around the council
table is clear. Henstock called
the pay freeze amendment
“governance overreach” during
the amendment debate.
CCHL was formed partly so
politicians could not control
the day-to-day operations and
budgets of the council-owned
companies.
This leaves operational
decisions to CCHL and each
company’s management.
The Star asked Mauger and
the four other city councillors,
Henstock (Papanui), MacDonald
(Waimairi), David Cartwright
(Fendalton), and Mark Peters
(Hornby) – who voted against
the amendment – for their
views on the issue.
Only MacDonald gave a full
reply, outlining his concerns
about the amendment.
Mauger and Henstock said
they supported MacDonald’s
view, underpinning the
alignments within the city
council. MacDonald said he
was concerned the amendment
risked blurring the line
between the city council’s
shareholder role and the role
of the boards of the individual
operating companies.
“Christchurch City Holdings is
in place specifically to monitor
and oversee the operational
subsidiaries on council’s behalf.
That structure exists for a
reason.”
He said remuneration is
an employment matter and
sits with individual company
boards and their chief
executives.
"Neither council nor
councillors are the employer,
and it would not be appropriate
for us to offer views on the
appropriateness of individual
remuneration arrangements.
The Companies Act is very clear
on where those responsibilities
sit.”
MacDonald said he does not
hold a view on the pay levels
for each chief executive as
those decisions sit with the
company boards.
“We have deliberately
established a governance model
that provides independence
and clarity of roles, including
to support confidence in how
the group accesses capital and
operates in the market.”
The councillors who voted
for the amendment were Kelly
Barber (Burwood), Pauline
Cotter (Innes), Celeste Donovan
(Coastal), Tyrone Fields (Banks
Peninsula), Tyla Harrison-
Hunt (Riccarton), Herz Jardine
(Heathcote), Yani Johanson
(Linwood), Jake McLellan
(Central) and Tim Scandrett
(Cashmere). The councillors
against were Mauger, Henstock,
Cartwright (Fendalton),
MacDonald and Peters. Melanie
Coker did not vote because
she is a CCHL director. Aaron
Keown (Harewood) and Andrei
Moore (Halswell) were absent.
Cheaper driver
licences under
Government
overhaul
A shake-up of the driver
licensing system is on the way,
with the Government promising
changes that will make it
cheaper to get a licence.
Under the reforms, drivers
will no longer need to sit a second
practical test to obtain a full
licence. Other changes include
extending the learner licence
period to 12 months for drivers
under 25, reducing the number
of eyesight screenings and
expanding the zero-alcohol rule.
Announcing the changes in
Auckland on Tuesday, Transport
Minister Chris Bishop said the
current system was “expensive,
outdated and no longer works as
well as it should”.
The reforms would make it
“significantly cheaper” to gain a
full driver licence, Bishop said,
adding that New Zealand was
an outlier in requiring a second
practical driving test.
Further changes include
extending the restricted licence
period by six months for drivers
who accrue demerit points,
rather than resetting it entirely,
while retaining the existing
demerit threshold for licence
suspension for restricted
drivers.
Under the new rules, all
learner and restricted drivers,
regardless of age, would be
subject to a zero-alcohol limit.
Gang insignia leads to gun, drugs find
BY AL WILLIAMS
A gang member who was
deported from Australia with
a history of firearms offences
has now been caught with a
3D-printed gun.
Benjamin Henderson, 38, was
jailed for two years and three
months when he appeared in
the district court on charges of
unlawfully possessing a firearm,
perverting the course of
justice, possessing methamphetamine
and displaying gang
insignia.
The court heard he was seen
wearing a Mongols hoodie
around Christchurch on two
occasions in January 2025.
He was later arrested and
found with methamphetamine
and steroids before police
searched his house and car and
found a 3D-printed gun in his
car.
Nine rounds of .22 LR rimfire
ammunition were found with it.
In addition, a round of .17
HMR rimfire ammunition was
found with the firearm and
nine vials of steroids from
inside the house.
Judge Michael Crosbie said
Henderson had a history of
related offending.
A pre-sentence report said
he was at risk of reoffending
and there was ongoing concern
about his behaviour because of
his criminal history.
Judge Crosbie said Henderson
had strong gang connections
in Australia with the Nomads
and in New Zealand with the
Mongols.
The court heard Benjamin Henderson had strong connections with gangs in Australia
and New Zealand.
PHOTO: GETTY
Defence lawyer George Rahul
said he was concerned Henderson
would be on lockdown
while in prison for 23 hours a
day because of his associations.
Judge Crosbie did not accept
the submission, saying it was
a matter for the Department
of Corrections to consider and
beyond the court’s jurisdiction.
Rahul said the firearm was
not in working condition, which
was a mitigating factor in the
offending.
However, the Crown said
instruction manuals for print
settings, as well as fitting of
components for 3D-printed
guns, were readily available
online.
Judge Crosbie said it was
aggravating that the firearm
was 3D printed, meaning it was
“outside the system”.
“(3D-printed) firearms cannot
be traced by police; they subvert
the regulatory measure;
the ability to manufacture them
is sending something of a chill
through the criminal justice
system.
“The 3D printing of firearms
is linked to criminal activity.
There is no lawful or legitimate
use for (3D-printed) firearms.”
Judge Crosbie told Henderson
he had an entrenched pattern
of engaging with gangs.
“Your view is that much of
this comes about because police
are out to get you.”
Henderson was earlier sentenced
to six years and five
months in prison in May 2020
for firearm and drug offences
and was paroled in September
2021.
Two conditions were that
he did not possess or consume
drugs or alcohol, and he was
required to attend an alcohol
and drug assessment.
However, multiple times
between February and September
2023, he failed to attend
drug assessments, and, on one
occasion, did not provide a
urine sample.
Henderson attended an
appointment in October 2023,
where he provided a sample
that was not human urine.
He was charged with failing
or refusing to provide a urine
sample and attempting to pervert
the course of justice.
He pleaded guilty to failing
or refusing to provide a urine
sample and was convicted and
discharged.
Henderson applied to have
the charge of perverting the
course of justice thrown out but
his application was dismissed
by the Supreme Court in
November last year.
Father has ‘mixed emotions’ about
coroner’s report into his son’s death
BY DYLAN SMITS
A long-awaited coroner’s report
into the death of Geoff Booth’s
son has found nothing could
have been done to prevent the
21-year-old’s suicide.
Liam Booth was sent home
from Christchurch Hospital in a
taxi after threatening to take his
own life.
Liam was found dead less than
three weeks later in Beckenham
Park, about 100m from his flat,
in October 2017.
Booth spoke to The Star about
the coroner’s report, which was
released on Monday.
“I feel mixed emotions. He was
in their care, so there was a duty
of care that they should have
applied I think. Wraparound
services or support. But looking
at it after the fact, it’s too late.
My son is not coming back.”
Booth spent years seeking
answers from health
authorities, and spoke out in the
media about his son's death.
“Liam would have been dead
nine years this year and the
findings have only come out
now. So it’s a long time waiting
for an outcome. Now Liam
becomes an official statistic for
death by suicide,” he said.
In his findings, Coroner Bruce
Hesketh said he was satisfied,
even if a comprehensive system
Geoff Booth at the
coroner’s inquest after
his son Liam committed
suicide in 2017. The
coroner’s report was
released on Monday.
was available, it would not have
made any difference to the
decision to discharge Liam. On
whether the death could have
been prevented, the coroner
said in his report the answer
was “no”.
Hesketh also rejected several
of Booth’s concerns about the
care his son received.
Booth believes Liam should
have been compulsorily
admitted to hospital.
Liam’s threats of self
harm escalated during 2017,
culminating in police bringing
him to the hospital’s emergency
department in mid-September
after he told his father he
planned to end his life.
On-call psychiatrist Dr Michael
Clarke decided Liam did not
meet the criteria to be held
under the Mental Health Act.
Liam did not want to be
admitted as a voluntary patient
and refused crisis respite, such
as a short-term stay.
He was discharged and given
a taxi chit to get back to his flat.
Liam had a difficult time
managing his behaviour from
a young age, suffering from
low mood, a diagnosis of
oppositional defiance disorder,
acts of aggression and threats of
self harm.
Booth felt the hospital should
have allowed him to be present
at his son’s assessment, and
did not believe the hour or so
Clarke spent with Liam was
enough to assess him on their
first meeting.
When Clarke phoned Booth
after his son’s assessment, he
warned the doctor his son was
lying when he said he did not
have suicidal intentions, and
urged him to admit him against
his wishes.
By the time Clarke phoned
Booth back later that night,
Liam had already been
discharged.
Court-appointed expert
witness, psychiatrist Dr Barry
Walsh, found the quality of care
Liam received at the hospital
was adequate.
He told the coroner
compulsory treatment was a
serious step.
“With suicidal crises,
admissions can cause a
deterioration rather than an
improvement,” Walsh said.
Hesketh found the decision
not to admit Liam under the
Mental Health Act was the right
one.
Hesketh said more should
have been done to share
information and include
Liam’s family in the discharge
planning.
Looking forward, Booth said
it is good to have the report’s
findings out in the open.
“With it out in the public,
it can raise awareness that
parents need to be more aware
of what’s going on with their
kids.
“You know, like Liam should
have been 30 last week.”
Restaurant owners reveal their
What are the best reviewed
restaurants on Google in
Christchurch? Reporter
Dylan Smits finds out
Manu Restaurant and
Bar, 151 Cambridge Tce,
central city
Prominent restaurateur
Karen Hattaway started
her latest venture Manu in
2024.
She is the owner and creative
force behind the cultural fusion
eatery.
Incorporating Māori, Pacifica
and Asian culture, Hattaway
says one of Manu’s key
strengths is its shared meals.
“People don't write great
reviews because the food was
good. They write them because
of how they felt while they were
with us.”
Previously, she has launched
the highly-rated Queenstown
restaurants, Blue Kanu, Pier 19,
and Captains.
Manu has intricate decor,
inspired by Pacific and Māori
culture.
“We might look flash, but
we’re really down-to-earth
people too with our customers,”
said Hattaway.
Manu Bar and Restaurant owner Karen Hattaway moved to Christchurch in 2024 to start her latest restaurant venture.
intelligence.
“We have people when they
start who are maybe not super
technically skilled at serving
but they might have a great
smile,” said Hattaway.
But even highly-rated
restaurants like Manu get harsh
reviews from time to time.
“We recently got our first one
star review. My guys were so
heartbroken, one of them was
in tears and I went: ‘It's okay we
can't please everyone’.
“It's the one bad review out of
100 good ones that gets you.”
Out of all of Manu’s dishes,
the venison and paua spring
rolls stick out as a customer
favourite.
“It comes with this lovely
seafood mayo and it’s pretty
crunchy. Very tasty,” said
Hattaway.
Online reviews praise Manu’s
staff and interior design.
Said one reviewer: “My
husband and I enjoyed an
amazing and most delicious
meal at Manu on Friday
evening.
“The ambiance was so
lovely. The artistic designs and
sculptures were awesome. Our
waiter was most attentive and
the food was divine.”
He says the positive
reception can be put down to
an approachable staff and the
restaurant’s main quirk, an
ever-evolving menu.
“If I could articulate what we
do well perfectly, I would bottle
it and then sell it on for lots of
money.”
The online reviews are highly
complimentary to staff.
“Sat at the chefs table and
we asked for whatever he
recommended. What we got
was dish after dish of beautiful
prepared and delicious plates,”
one review stated.
Bar Yoku co-owners Juliana and Shawn McGowan revitalised the Japanese
restaurant in 2020 after it had gone into liquidation under the previous owner.
Right – One of Bar Yoku’s highly praised dishes is the Akaroa salmon sashimi.
manager, and Shawn is the
head chef. Juliana says the
restaurant’s success has
Being owner-operated is one
of their strengths, Juliana says.
“I think we treat people like
they're our friends coming
into our home for a good old
the same kind of love and care
and hospitality.”
The McGowans purchased Bar
Yoku in 2020 after it went into
liquidation under the previous
owners. Shawn had been a
chef in the old restaurant so
he was already experienced in
Japanese cuisine.
Akaroa salmon sashimi with the
fish delivered fresh everyday.
"The fish monger delivers the
salmon whole too, which lets
us use the fins and the tail in
the dish. It’s all quite a unique
taste that maybe some people
wouldn’t naturally order, but
they end up loving the flavour,”
said Juliana.
There are a myriad of rave
online reviews. "We tried
something from each portion
of the menu and we wished
our stomachs were bigger! The
flavours, the presentation, all
just absolutely chef’s kiss. We
also had the smoothest, and
strongest, saki we've ever had.
Absolutely incredible,” said one
Vibration science could tell pests to buzz off
In a small room at the Bioeconomy Science
Institute in Lincoln, Dr Mark MacDougall
refocuses a laser so the beam is centred on
a strip of metal tape attached to a tomato
plant leaf. He is using it to detect minuscule
movements.
The source of that motion is a tiny greenhouse
whitefly on the underside of the leaf,
communicating in a form of insect language
we cannot hear or feel – a language
of vibrations.
Before starting his PhD, MacDougall
had never heard of this vibrational language,
known as biotremology, but the idea
quickly captivated him.
“I just had no idea that vibrations were
just a part of the way animals communicated,”
he said.
Dr Mark MacDougall studies insect vibrational
calls in the lab using a laser vibrometer.
PHOTOS: CRAIG ROBERTSON/BIOECONOMY SCIENCE INSTITUTE
“I had no idea that it was so widespread
throughout the world and it was basically
this entire world of communication that
we humans are really not privy to.”
Insects produce vibrations in a variety
of ways, he said, much like different musicians
in a band.
“Some of them will simply shake their
bodies. Some insects will scrape little plates
on the inside of their body, kind of like a
grasshopper might.
“But they can also be used to send vibrations
through a plant stem as well. Insects,
like termites, will bang their heads on the
ground to send vibrations throughout a
nest,” MacDougall said.
Different vibration patterns convey different
messages, which brings MacDougall
into this sound- and vibration-isolated
room, where he is trying to record and
decode the greenhouse whitefly’s signals
– with the hope of eventually using that
knowledge against them.
Greenhouse whitefly is the most common
whitefly species in New Zealand and
can be found year-round in greenhouse
crops, particularly tomatoes, eggplants,
capsicums and cucurbits. Adults are about
1.5mm long and feed on plant sap, weakening
plants and encouraging sooty mould.
In the right conditions, populations can
explode and severely damage crops.
Tomato grower Pete Mundy knows the
problem well. From a hectare-sized glasshouse
in the Heathcote Valley, he grows
multiple varieties of cherry tomatoes
hydroponically.
Mundy has his own methods of pest
control to try keep the whitefly numbers
in check, but he's also allowed researchers
from the Bioeconomy Science Institute to
run a series of biotremology
research trials on some of
the plants.
While Mundy uses his
own pest-control methods,
he has also allowed
researchers to run biotremology
trials on some plants.
The goal, said project lead
Dr Lloyd Stringer, is to test
whether vibrational communication
can be used
to deter pests in a real-world growing
environment.
“We could develop something here in the
lab, for example, and go, ‘oh, we’ve got a
great idea, this will work’. Go to the glasshouse
and go, ‘oh heck, that’s not going to
work. We haven't got power plugs every
five metres’ or something like that. So...
that helps us make sure we’re developing
something that’s going to be useful and
applicable without too many tweaks.”
The first trial, which began in October
2025, used a single vibrational tone previously
identified by Japanese researchers as
discouraging egg-laying.
Mini-shakers attached
to metal beams transmitted
vibrations to plants
every 15 minutes over six
weeks, while entomologist
Dr Rachael Horner counted
eggs on treated and control
plants.
However, once they
crunched the numbers, the
team did not find much
difference between control
and vibration areas,
Pete Mundy
Dr Lloyd
Stringer
although there seemed to be a slight trend
for lower egg laying on the treatment
plants.
Stringer said many variables were at
play, including uneven whitefly distribution
and questions about how strong
vibrations need to be and how far they
travel through plants.
Future trials will increase vibration
frequency, and researchers are working
with a Christchurch company to develop
bespoke devices to expand coverage.
While the concept of using biotremology
for pest control is not new, Stringer said
cost and practical challenges have long limited
its use.
For growers like Mundy, however, the
prospect of another non-chemical tool is
appealing.
“The technology is getting there, we just
need to do it now.” -RNZ
Thieves love Aquas and insurers are
BY SUSAN EDMUNDS
Toyota Aquas are New Zealand’s
most stolen car – but how can you
keep your insurance costs down if
you own one?
AMI Insurance said it received
more than 9000 vehicle theft and
attempted theft claims in 2025.
Toyota Aquas were 8% of all
stolen vehicle claims, it said, followed
by Toyota Corollas at 7%
and Nissan Tiidas at 6%.
The data also showed Toyota
Aquas were disproportionately
targeted, with a theft rate nearly
four times that of the country’s
most insured vehicle, the Toyota
Corolla.
For every 1000 insured Toyota
Aquas, 54 had a theft claim, compared
with 15 of the 1000 Toyota
Corollas.
Auckland had the most vehicle
theft, followed by
Canterbury and
“Lower crime
Steph Ferris
rates, improved security systems
in newer vehicles, and New
Zealanders adopting security
practices – including being more
mindful about where they park –
likely play a part in this,” she said.
AMI said older cars were more
likely to be stolen. Nearly nine
out of every 10 stolen vehicles
was more than 10 years old.
Said Ferris: “Older vehicles
often lack modern, electronic
encrypted locking systems,
making them easier for thieves
to compromise.”
Spokesperson for insurance
comparison site Quashed, Justin
Lim, said a Toyota Aqua was
higher risk in terms of theft,
“Where you park your car
Justin Lim they should look for a welllit
be used.
AMI said about 64% of stolen
vehicles were recovered and 40%
were repairable.
Rare black-billed gulls return
home to McCormacks Bay
BY KEES CHALMERS
A flock of the world’s most
endangered seagulls has finally
returned to McCormacks Bay,
and Tanya Jenkins is determined
to make them stay.
The black-billed gulls nested
in McCormacks Bay for decades,
but unleashed dogs and overgrown
islands drove them away.
About seven years ago, the
flooded foundations of the
derelict former PricewaterhouseCoopers
building on
Armagh St provided a temporary
refuge for the birds. They
have nested there every season
since – until now.
Jenkins, who is chair of the
Ihutai Avon Heathcote Estuary
Trust, said the conditions at the
PwC site were atrocious.
“The water in there was
putrid. They were nesting on
concrete which wasn’t very stable,”
she said.
“If it was windy or rainy, the
chicks would fall out of their
nest and drown in the disgusting
water at the base.”
About four years ago, the trust
decided to restore the McCormacks
Bay islands in an effort to
lure the endangered gulls back.
It obtained approval from
the city council and received a
$5000 grant from the Sumner
Tanya Jenkins near the black-billed gull nesting site at McCormacks Bay. Inset, a
Ferrymead Foundation, which
was used to pay contractors to
clean up the overgrown islands.
The city council also supplied
a truckload of shells for the gulls
to nest on.
Volunteers spent two Sundays
in September wading through
low tide to carry small bags of
shells to the islands.
“It was a tremendous job, it
was raining and it was horrible,
but we were so determined to do
it before the nesting season and
that paid off,” she said.
The trust had expected it
would take at least a year for the
gulls to return, but birds were
seen scouting the bay as early
as November, and by December
more than 500 had nested on the
restored islands.
During the winter months, the
trust will continue maintaining
the islands and adding more
shells to attract the birds back
for next year’s nesting season.
Jenkins will give a presentation
on birds in the estuary,
focusing on black-billed gulls, at
the Mt Pleasant Community Centre
on Sunday at 11am.
The presentation aims to
raise awareness of the gulls and
encourage residents to speak
up when dog owners walk their
pets around the estuary without
a leash.
15 MARCH 2026 COMMUNITY FUN RUN | 12KM OR 6KM WWW.CITY2SURF.CO.NZ
The training programme will stay the same this week as last week but may I suggest that you go and explore the geographical
options you have for your training. This means not only exploring your own neighbourhood but also venturing to places like
the Burwood Plantation, the beach or the Port Hills. Of course it takes a bit more time as you need transport so the weekend
might be the best time to do this. The best surface to run on is soft, like grass, sand or gravel; it is easier on the legs so try and do
the majority of your sessions on these types of surfaces if possible. If you have time, venture into the Port Hills. A good place to
start is the track which runs between the sign of the Takahe and the sign of the Kiwi. This is a gradual incline which you can do
out and back for as far as you can comfortably go. Once you have mastered this track you can venture beyond anywhere in the
port hills. Jogging on the Port Hills walking tracks takes a bit of concentration as the terrain underfoot can be uneven. Walking
or jogging and running uphill will automatically increase the intensity a fraction because you use larger muscle groups. It is a
type of endurance training which will accelerate your strength and fitness with incredible views of our beautiful city as an extra
bonus. Going up, take small steps and take your time so you stay mainly in zone 1 and 2. Remember that zone 1 is perceived as
an easy effort which you can maintain for very long periods of time. In zone 2 you will get slightly puffed but you can still have a
conversation. Initially take it easy on the downhill. It can be hard on the legs, so go careful. At this time of the year the beach is
also an attractive option for a workout. The soft sand will add an extra dimension and help the strength development. On hot
days go for the forest or parks as the shade provided by the trees will protect you from the blazing sun. Hagley Park is of course
the jewel in the crown as far as parks go with lots of variety and enough options never to have to do the same route.
WEEK 5
To achieve this goal you need to
develop some awareness around the
basic requirements of exercising for
health and fitness. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train?
To improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have
and 1 session per week is definitely not
sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions?
The duration of your sessions will
generally build towards between 30
and 50 minutes with one longer session
of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done
at submaximal pace, also called
conversation pace. That means a pace
where you can still talk. If you can’t
talk you are going too fast and you
are likely to come to a grinding halt
sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying
information are written as a guide only. If you
are concerned about your health at any stage
please undergo a health check with your GP.
TRAINING
PROGRAMME
TIP
Comfort during your training
session will greatly add to
your enjoyment. Small issues
like shoes which do not quite
fit, wrongly sized, insufficient
or too much clothing can
all have big consequences
like blisters, cold exposure,
heatstroke or chaffing issues. In
a previous article I have already
mentioned the importance of
well-fitting shoes but the same
applies to your running shorts
and top. For women there are
special sports bra’s to add to
comfort and males can prevent
the much maligned “nipple
rash” with preventative taping
over the affected areas.
Record knock keeps Burnside on top
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Burnside West-University
opener Scott Janett had no
idea when he was dismissed
on Saturday he had just set
a new record for the highest
ever score in the Metro one-day
competition.
The 21-year-old’s 197 off just
143 balls against Sydenham on
Saturday, including 11 sixes,
took him past Dylan Hunter’s
180 for Old Boys Collegians two
years ago.
"I knew the two records prior
were in the last
few years, but I
thought Bevon
Jacobs had
scored 200,”
Janett said.
“I knew it was
around there.”
Despite the
record Janett
said he felt he
“left 50-odd
runs out there” after being
Scott Janett
bowled trying to paddle sweep
with 10 overs to go.
"It was a bit of a hot day and I
was pretty tired, but coming in I
did actually feel all right.
"I could have really smashed
it, but I took an option that I
thought was on and you've got
to live with that. Sometimes
they come off, sometimes they
don't, cricket is a funny game.”
His innings helped Burnside
to a club-record total of 379/9,
the second-highest team score
in the competition’s history
behind Lancaster Park’s 415/6
against Riccarton in 2021.
Burnside bowled Sydenham
out for 122 to seal a 257-run
win.
Janett, who has played nine
times for Canterbury in his
burgeoning career but only
once this season, said he hoped
the innings could springboard
him back into domestic
reckoning.
“It is not so much around
focusing on how to get selected,
it's just focusing on what I can
do for myself and on how I can
put out my best performance
no matter what the game
is or what the situation is,
whether it's for Canterbury, for
Canterbury A or for Burnside.
“Hopefully it gives me a bit
of confidence going forward
and I can continue to put some
scores on the board that can get
noticed.”
He has learned a lot from his
brief opportunities so far.
"You're never going to score
100 every game, that's just the
nature of cricket. But I think
I've taken those lessons pretty
well.
“Obviously, you're always
trying to get back into that
side. Sometimes it's up to you,
sometimes it's just the nature of
who's available. All I can do is
keep performing and hopefully
I can get back in there and play
a few more games this season
and going forward. Burnside’s
victory was not the biggest
Whittaker’s
long road to
college ball
stardom
Canterbury basketballer Lauren Whittaker is making a name for
herself as one of the best-performing college freshmen in the
United States. Sam Coughlan reports
Eight years ago, 12-year-old
Lauren Whittaker visited
Gonzaga University in Spokane,
Washington, with her family,
while older sister Charlotte
looked at division 1 basketball
schools.
Fast-forward to today, and
Whittaker is now one of Gonzaga’s
star players, spearheading
the team’s standout campaign.
While Charlotte chose to
study at the University of
Colorado, five years later, as
Whittaker’s basketball career
was starting to blossom at St
Andrew’s College, she followed
in her sister’s footsteps and
explored college options in the
United States.
She sent Gonzaga some of her
highlight reels and visited the
school – this time for them to
evaluate her – and they liked
what they saw.
“They (the coaches) tell me
all the time, ‘we were so upset
when your sister didn’t choose
here, but it was all worth it,
because it was meant to happen
that you came here’,” she said.
Now nearing the end of her
freshman season for the Gonzaga
Bulldogs, the 20-year-old
ranks among the top first-year
players in the United States.
Standing at 1.91m tall (sixfoot-three),
she has been named
best freshman in the women’s
West Coast Conference for six
consecutive weeks and scored
a career-high 37 points against
Oregon State two weeks ago.
That tally set a record for
a freshman at Gonzaga and
equalled the most points in a
Whittaker (bottom right) with older sister Charlotte (left) brother Mason (middle)
and the Gonzaga University coaches during a visit in 2018.
Lauren Whittaker is among the best freshman college basketballers in the United States this year, excelling for Gonzaga
University in the West Coast Conference.
single game by any women’s
player in school history.
“Sometimes it feels like I get a
little bit of imposter syndrome,”
Whittaker said.
“But it’s cool. Obviously it’s
nice to get that recognition after
the hard work I had to do to
get here and the injuries and
setbacks I had to go through.”
Whittaker started studying at
Gonzaga in January 2024 after
finishing at St Andrew’s College,
and redshirted the second half
of that season – training with
the team without being eligible
to play.
She was preparing for her
debut season in August when
she tore her meniscus, forcing
her to medically redshirt the
entire season.
It means she is in the unique
position of having studied at
Gonzaga for a year-and-a-half
before making her basketball
debut as a freshman last year.
“There was a lot of pressure
around that and a lot of
anticipation,” she said.
“Gonzaga has such a big
community for basketball. We
nearly sell out every game,
average over 5000 fans, the
atmosphere is just insane.
“It’s such a small school, but
the community gets behind it.
Everyone’s so big on basketball
and you’re literally like a
celebrity.”
“It’s easy to get caught
up in the Twitter
comments or what
someone’s going to say
about you. The big focus
is just staying present
and controlling what I
can control, because I
think it mucks with your
mind a lot.”
Lauren Whittaker
Whittaker is repaying the
faith shown in her, averaging
20 points per game and 10
rebounds, with 11 doubledoubles
– the most by any
freshman in the country.
Gonzaga have won eight games
and sit third in their conference,
with eight games remaining
before the tournament finals,
where the winner secures a spot
in the NCAA division 1 ‘March
Madness’ national tournament.
Despite the excitement,
Whittaker is staying focused on
her studies at Gonzaga, majoring
in communications with
minors in marketing and sports
management.
“Media is massive over here,
so it’s easy to get caught up in
the Twitter comments or what
someone’s going to say about
you.
“For me, the big focus is just
staying present and controlling
what I can control, because I
think it mucks with your mind
a lot.
“But it is crazy – sometimes
I have to just remind myself,
‘wow, I never thought I’d be
here’.”
Basketball runs deep in the
Whittaker family. Charlotte,
25, now plays professionally in
Australia, while brother Mason,
Shortly before tearing her
was picked to represent the
Tall Ferns at a FIBA World
Cup qualifying tournament
in Mexico, where she played
alongside Charlotte for the first
time.
“It was so cool. That was
such a special moment, to play
those years.”
Whittaker hopes to earn a
SPORT The Star, February 5, 2026 | 23
Father and son’s superbike success
SAM COUGHLAN
Hunter Charlett is making
a name for himself in the
motorsport world after six
victories at the New Zealand
Superbike Championship
The 15-year-old won all three
of his races in both the 150
and 300 Supersport classes at
Ruapuna over the weekend.
He leads the
standings in both
classes.
He was joined
at the top by his
father, Dennis
Charlett, who
claimed two
wins from three
races in the Pro-
Twin class.
Hunter Charlett
"Everything just went the way
I wanted it to go,” Hunter said.
The Papanui High School student
qualified on pole position
for all three races and used the
clean air to pull away from his
competitors.
"I would usually get a pretty
good start and get first into turn
one, and I would just lead the
race from there,” he said.
“My dad and my mum were
giving me the gap to the person
behind me, and it would
just keep increasing. I think
the biggest gap that I got to was
9.6sec.”
Dennis, a 17-time national
champion, said his son’s ability
has grown over the past two
years.
"On the weekend he was not
really pushing hard, so he had
Hunter Charlett won six races in round one of the New Zealand Superbike Championship at Ruapuna.
plenty left in him,” he said.
“He's got a good head on
his shoulders, where he's
thinking about winning the
championship and, you know,
not overdoing it
and crashing in a
race.
“He's very
smart for his
age, with a very
mature head.”
They both
competed in the
300 class last Dennis Charlett
year. But Dennis
stepped up to a more powerful
bike this year.
This is Hunter’s second year
competing in the 300 class,
after finishing ninth in the
championship last year.
"It was a learning curve for
me,” Hunter said.
“For the first half of the season
I was a few seconds off the
top group and then towards the
end of the season I was getting
closer and closer to winning.
“So I finished ninth in the
championship last year and
now I'm first by 36 points.”
He is already a 150 class
champion, but wants to win
that competition again by winning
every race.
Hunter credited his dad for
his success.
"He's been super-helpful, trying
to teach me how to like do
all my own stuff on my own
bike.
PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY
“I help him pack and unpack
the trailer and the van for every
weekend and help him set out
on the track. He teaches me to
write in a book about everything,
he helps so much.”
Dennis said they both want to
stay in the winner’s circle this
year.
"Last year (Hunter) would
win a race and I would win a
race, but obviously this year
we're both looking to win the
championship.”
The championship moves
to Invercargill’s Teretonga
Park for the second round
this weekend. Practice and
qualifying take place on Friday
before one race on Saturday,
and two on Sunday.
Avon dominate South
Island rowing champs
Avon won the men’s and women’s
pair, four, eight and claimed
three sculling golds at the South
Island rowing championships in
Twizel at the weekend. St Bede’s
College was the top Christchurch
school, winning five golds.
The next major regatta is the
South Island secondary schools
championships in March.
Women’s cricket
pioneer dies
Lancaster Park life member and
women’s cricket pioneer, Jean
Ruddenklau, died last week aged
83. Ruddenklau joined the club
in 1976 when it merged with
the Western Women’s Cricket
Club. She played until 1984, but
remained involved with the club,
attending events, presenting
at prize-givings and donating
several women’s trophies. She
was made a life member in
1995.
They said it
“There’s a lot of hair
TOUCH CANTERBURY
Touch in Canterbury continues to
build momentum across the region,
with strong participation reflecting the
ongoing growth of the game throughout
Canterbury and the wider South
Island. That strength will be on display
when Canterbury teams take part in
the 2026 Bunnings National Youth
Touch Championships, being held in
Christchurch from February 6–8 at
Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub.
The tournament, delivered by Touch
New Zealand, will see more than
60 teams travel to Canterbury from
across the country. Touch Canterbury
looks forward to welcoming players,
officials, and whānau to Christchurch
and hopes visitors enjoy both the
tournament and everything the city has
to offer.
Having the event hosted in Canterbury is
always welcomed, as competing in our
home city significantly reduces travel and
accommodation costs for local players
and their whānau, while also allowing the
wider Canterbury touch community to get
in behind the region’s young athletes.
Touch Canterbury will field six
representative teams this season across
the U16 and U18 grades, highlighting
both depth and development within the
programme:
• U18 Boys – Coached by
Scott Grant and Eli Doornenbal,
Managed by Anita Boyd
• U18 Girls – Coached by
Mel Carson, Warren Brown, and
Jarad Pateman, Managed by Heather Algar
• U16 Boys – Coached by Dean Hikaka,
Managed by Casey Bartram
• U16 Boys Development – Coached by
Jason Puddle and Dan Manuel, Managed by
Tanya Gardiner
• U16 Girls – Coached by Hayley McKellow
and Corey Tauwhare, Managed by
Kayla Boniface
• U16 Girls Development – Coached by
Tony Eggers and Juanita Gear, Managed by
Shani Postlethwaite
Touch Canterbury would like to acknowledge the
significant contribution of all coaches and team
managers involved in this campaign. Their time,
commitment, and leadership are instrumental in
supporting our rangatahi and creating positive,
values-driven environments throughout the
representative season.
Touch Canterbury also extends its sincere
thanks to the sponsors who support players
directly, helping make attendance at national
tournaments possible. Touch remains a
user-pays sport, and this support is critical in
ensuring players can access representative
opportunities at the highest level.
Canterbury will again have
a strong referee presence
at the Youth Nationals, with
more than 20 Canterbury
referees appointed to officiate
across the tournament.
Their selection reflects the
depth, quality, and ongoing
development of referees within
the region, and the important
contribution Canterbury officials
continue to make at a national level.
Touch Canterbury acknowledges Milestone Homes, proud
sponsors of Canterbury referees, and Joe’s Garage,
whose continued support helps recognise the hard work
of volunteers and provides player-of-the-day vouchers
across affiliated competitions.
Touch Canterbury would also like to thank Touch
New Zealand and the Christchurch City Council for their
support in bringing this national event to Christchurch.
Tournament draws, results, and livestream information will
be available at www.touchnz.co.nz throughout the event.
Those interested in getting involved in touch rugby can
find information on all available competitions across the
region at www.touchcanterbury.co.nz.
With strong teams, experienced leadership, and a proud
Canterbury presence across players, coaches, managers,
and referees, Touch Canterbury looks forward to being
part of another outstanding Youth Nationals tournament in
Christchurch.
Exciting challenge ahead for the U16 Girls Red team at nationals
The Under 16 Girls Red Team are looking forward
to having a home Youth National Championship
from the 6th to the 8th of February at Nga Puna
Wai! The tournament is an awesome opportunity
to play against the best of the best from every
province. It will be a great challenge, and one the
team is very excited about being able to play on
home soil.
Under the guidance of coach Hayley Mckellow
& Corey Tauwhare, the team has been working
hard on building meaningful connections on
and off the field. We travelled to Oamaru, where
we played a mini tournament playing against
Southland, Canterbury Black and Otago.
We then competed in the Te Waipounamu
Tournament held here in Christchurch. Across
both tournaments we came away with some
well-earned wins, but more importantly, a few
draws with Otago, who eventually pipped us in
a well-fought final, leaving us in second place.
With a talented group, of which a high number
of players have yet to attend a Junior Nationals
and the veterans attended last year, they have
gelled well together and are starting to find their
rhythm and are truly an exciting group to take to
Nationals. The girls are led from the front by a
group of experienced players, training hard and
fine-tuning all aspects of the game, they are ready
to take on whatever Nationals will bring. We would
like to say a massive thank you to all our sponsors
& parents for all their support thus far. It has been
really awesome and very much appreciated by the
team management and players. THANK YOU!!!
The Under-16 Girls Black team was formed
programme, bringing together a group of players
who had previously competed alongside one
another individually but had never taken the field
Since coming together, the team has gone from
impressive on-field chemistry. What began as a
Expanded education and employment
SPONSORED CONTENT
services for Christchurch through the Y
The Y Central South Island has welcomed
the community to its new, larger
site at 410 Colombo Street, marking
an expansion of its youth education,
employment pathways and driver
licence support and instruction services
within the city.
The transition to the new centre,
known as The Education Centre and
Driving and Employment Pathways Hub,
was necessitated by growing demand
and consistent waiting lists at the old
site.
The new facility has enabled the Y to
expand its existing educational delivery
and introduce the Y’s Driving and
Employment Pathways services to
Christchurch for the first time.
The Y Central South Island invites
enquiries from young people
aged 16 to 24 (or 15 with an approved
school exemption), or their caregivers,
who are seeking alternatives to mainstream
education. It also welcomes
referrals from local Work & Income
Christchurch sites and driver licence
support enquiries.
The organisation is there to provide a
structured environment which will help
learners earn academic qualifications
and vocational skills, as well as helping
job seekers find and secure permanent
employment, and providing learner
drivers with the opportunity to get their
Class 1 learner, restricted, or full drivers
license.
Here’s what’s on offer at the Y in
Christchurch:
Education: The Y Education approach
is to empower learners to carve out their
own path and understands that when
it comes to learning, a one-size-fits-all
approach isn’t the answer. Courses on
offer include Foundation Skills Level
1, and Foundation Skills Level 2, both
providing an opportunity to gain NCEA.
Also, Y Goals literacy and numeracy
programme and Adult and Community
Education (ACE) community-based
education courses. All education programmes
are free and provide learners
with a pathway into either further learning
or employment.
Drive2Work: This 16-week referral-only
Employment Placement Service
offers job seekers one-on-one support
and guidance throughout their job
search journey.
Y Work Ready: Over 12-weeks, the
referral-only work readiness support
service is on hand to support job seekers
who are not yet ready to transition
directly into work, with guidance and
one-to-one support that is designed to
motivate and build confidence.
Y Drive Driving School: Designed to
‘open doors’ for people in the local community,
this referral-only driving school
will help attendees gain the driver
licence they need for independence,
opportunity, and employment.
The Y Christchurch is part of The Y
Central South Island, which is itself a
part of the nationwide Y movement, and
has been investing in the next generation
for more than a century. Alongside,
the Christchurch centre, the Y has locations
in Ashburton, Oamaru, Timaru,
and Twizel.
SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Wills and estate disputes: How proper
advice can prevent costly conflict (part one)
Disputes over wills and estates are
increasingly common. As family
dynamics become more complex,
disagreements about how an estate
should be handled arise more frequently.
Many families are surprised to learn that,
even when a person has made a will,
their estate can still be tied up in legal
claims for months or years.
In many cases, these disputes could
have been avoided with careful planning
and proper legal advice. Understanding
the types of disputes that commonly arise
is the first step in reducing the risk of
unnecessary conflict.
Most common types of disputes
1. Claims by children or other family
members
Under the Family Protection Act 1955,
certain family members can make a claim
against an estate if they can show the
will fails to provide adequately for their
maintenance and support. These claims
can arise even when a will is legally valid.
They often occur when one child receives
more than others, a child or grandchild
is excluded, or the will does not reflect
current family circumstances.
2. Relationship property disputes
involving surviving partners
A surviving spouse or partner
may apply to the Court to divide
relationship property under the Property
(Relationships) Act 1976 instead of
Protecting you
through all stages
of life
accepting what is provided in the will.
This can reduce the estate’s value and
affect what other beneficiaries receive.
These disputes may arise despite a
valid will and can place financial and
emotional strain on families.
3. Disputes about promises made
during life
Claims sometimes arise when someone
alleges the deceased promised to reward
them in the will for services, care, or
support. These disputes can be difficult to
resolve, as they often rely on recollections
of conversations or informal agreements.
4. Challenges to will validity
Wills may be challenged if it is alleged
that the deceased lacked capacity when
signing, was subject to undue influence,
or failed to follow legal formalities. Such
challenges are stressful for families
and often involve disputes about the
deceased’s state of mind or circumstances
at the time.
5. Disputes over interpretation of a will
Outdated or poorly drafted wills
may leave provisions open to differing
interpretations. These disputes can result
in lengthy, costly court proceedings,
delaying distribution and straining family
relationships.
Part Two of this article will outline
practical steps to reduce the risk of
these conflicts.
SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Promoting healthy blood pressure
and blood circulation
Vitamin K2, particularly the
menaquinone-7 (MK-7) form, is
recognised for its role in regulating
calcium and promoting cardiovascular
health. Atherosclerosis is a chronic
inflammatory disease characterised by
the buildup of plaque in the arteries.
This process causes the arteries to
narrow and stiffen, which restricts
blood flow, causing blood pressure
to rise, increasing the risk of serious
cardiovascular events like heart attack
and stroke, as well as organ failure.
The benefits of vitamin K2,
specifically the MK-7 variant, are tied
to its role in regulating calcium: it
prevents calcium from depositing in
arteries and directs it to the bones,
where it is required for bone strength.
Clinical studies have shown that MK-7
supplementation can reduce arterial
stiffness, a marker of atherosclerosis
and a risk factor for cardiovascular
events. Several studies have also
demonstrated a link between higher
vitamin MK-7 intake and a reduced
risk of coronary artery calcification. In
the Rotterdam Study, a higher intake of
MK-7 was associated with a lower risk
of death from coronary heart disease.
Another three-year placebo-controlled
trial involving healthy postmenopausal
women demonstrated that a daily
dose of 180 mcg of MK-7 significantly
improved arterial stiffness and
elasticity. Yet another study has shown
a significant reduction in arterial
stiffness within 24 weeks with a daily
dose of 375 mcg.
The MK-7 form of vitamin K2
is primarily found in fermented
foods, such as natto (a traditional
Japanese dish made from fermented
soybeans), and to a lesser extent,
in certain cheeses. MK-7 intake is
often low in Western diets, which
is why supplementation is typically
recommended, especially in MK-7
form, as it has superior bioavailability
and remains active in the bloodstream
longer than other forms. Anyone on
anticoagulant medication, such as
warfarin, should consult a doctor
before taking a vitamin K2 supplement,
as it can interfere with the medication.
Because vitamin K2 is fat-soluble,
optimal absorption requires taking it
with a meal rich in healthy fats, such
as avocado or olive oil. Consistency,
however, is the most essential factor in
taking the MK-7 regularly.
Numerous clinical studies have shown vitamin K2 to be one of the most essential supplements to take
if you are over fifty years old. Vitamin K2 is necessary for calcium metabolism, allowing calcium to
be effectively absorbed into bones and transported to where it is needed. As we age, vitamin K2 levels
decline, and calcium remains in the bloodstream, leading to the buildup of plaque in blood vessels and
their hardening (atherosclerosis), which restricts blood flow. This causes blood pressure to rise
and increases the chance of a heart attack or stroke. Research indicates that vitamin K2, specifically
menaquinone-7 (MK-7), has superior bioavailability and remains active in the bloodstream longer
than other forms. Studies show that 180-300 mcg of MK-7 can significantly reduce arterial stiffness and
improve blood vessel elasticity over time, supporting healthy blood pressure.
- Correct calcium metabolism
- Strong bones & teeth
- Reducing plaque buildup in blood vessels,
helping prevent a heart attack, stroke or organ
failure
- Healthy blood circulation & blood pressure
- Improved health & longevity
Dark Horse rising: Ford delivers
its most potent Mustang yet
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
The American car industry are masters
at creating muscle cars with thunderous,
powerhouse V8s, and one of the best is
the Ford Mustang coupe.
The Mustang has cemented its place
in US performance-car history alongside
other all-American high-performance
luminaries such as the Chevrolet Camaro
and Corvette, and the Dodge Challenger.
When the first-generation Mustang
took the automotive world by storm in
1964, it was a genuine game changer,
offering an affordable and accessible
high-performance coupe for the masses.
Sixty years after its debut, the all-new
seventh-generation Ford Mustang has
arrived, and it is the most exhilarating
yet.
Included in the range for the first
time is the Dark Horse – the first new
Mustang performance series in 21 years.
It comes locked and loaded with the
most powerful performance ever offered
from a new 5.0-litre V8.
There is plenty to like about the
unmistakable modern chiselled looks
of this car to complement its heritageinspired
design.
The upper grille shape is influenced
by the first version, while the Tri-Bar
LED headlamps continue the originals
models classic lighting signature. A
redesigned roof profile makes it easier
to get in and out of this beast.
Three versions of this latest Mustang
are available here with the $92,990
Fastback GT the first model out of the
starters gates, with the convertible a
$12k option.
Rounding out the range is the Dark
Horse auto that gallops into buyer
contention at $114,990, and there is
$116,990 six-speed manual for those that
fancy one.
Providing the large and strong
heartbeat for this current Mustang is the
fourth-generation Coyote V8 engine.
Its active-valve performance exhaust
system enables the GT Fastback to
deliver 362kW at 7250rpm and 567Nm
of torque.
The Dark Horse produces the same
amount of torque but brings another
11kw of power to the performance table.
The system’s delivers a custom-V8
sound with the ability to close the valves
to dial back the amount of noise.
This extra urge has been unlocked by
Ford’s new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct
injection and low-pressure port fuel
injection – delivering more concentrated
low-end torque, high-rpm power, and
improved fuel efficiency.
A solid prod of the throttle and the
motor flies. This demands plenty of
vigilance from the driver and extensive
use of the cruise control and speed alert
on the open road, to travel on the right
side of the law.
For all its heavy duty performance,
the engine happily potters along in ‘chill
mode’ in city traffic.
One thing built into the Mustang
from day one is its distinctive, deep and
rumbly exhaust note. God bless America!
There isn’t a lot left on the automotive
planet these day possessing such an
addictive sound track, and even fewer, as
vehicle manufacturers move at lighting
speed toward electrification.
A 10-speed automatic with a wide ratio
span is the prefect gear-changing buddy
for this mighty motor and the architect of
its sharper throttle responses and quick
fire gear changes. Everything is done at
pace in this car and that includes swift,
and well-considered gear changes.
The cabin is no space capsule with rear
seat space tight and not overly accessible.
With the low slug seating position I found
myself looking up and over the dash, even
visibility isn’t as good as it could be either.
The back seats are cramped and not a
space where adults would want to spend at
lot of time, but okay for smaller children.
These are the compromises that come
with high performance two door USA
made coupes, but haven’t stopped it
becoming a world top seller in its class.
A modern, interior has a 12.4-inch digital
instrument cluster that can be customised
to show different animated designs on the
centre stack. Settings are easily adjustable
by swiping the graphic to rotate the car
virtually.
This digital instrument cluster flows
seamlessly into a 13.2-inch centre stack
behind the same piece of integrated glass,
angled towards the driver. Together, they
create a fully immersive digital experience
mimicking a fighter jet cockpit – but in a
real-world sports car.
In-vehicle entertainment is laid on by
the latest B&O sound system, pumping out
through 12 speakers and a subwoofer, not
the canine variety.
Safety is well covered, with dynamic
stability control, front and side airbags,
and a performance brake package all
standard.
Autonomous emergency braking
with pedestrian detection is included,
along with adaptive cruise control, lanedeparture
warning and lane-keeping assist.
A standout feature for night driving is
the auto-levelling headlights and automatic
high beam, both of which reduce driver
workload after dark.
Stopping power is quick and decisive
thanks to the excellent 19-inch Brembo sixpiston
front brakes – true showstoppers in
every sense of the word.
The Mustang Dark Horse benefits from
unique chassis tuning, larger rear sway
bars and heavy-duty front shocks.
Steering response and grip are further
enhanced by a K-brace, improving
handling and feedback. The adaptive
shock absorbers monitor wheel and tyre
movement up to 1000 times per second,
striving – and largely succeeding – to
deliver optimal traction across a variety of
driving surfaces.
The Mustang dazzles with razor-sharp
handling, communicative steering and
impressive road-holding agility. The biggest
downside is a noisy, unyielding ride below
70km/h in urban driving, amplified over
rough road surfaces. This car prioritises
exceptional power and handling, and ride
comfort takes a back seat.
That low-speed abrasiveness won’t
bother Mustang faithful, who will see it as
an integral part of the car’s character.
