WELCOME back to

the first issue of Exit

we are injecting an extra

bit of fun into every issue

by creating a theme. With

Valentine’s Day upon us,

we’re taking the wickedly

unique step of calling this

The Love Issue.

And here to celebrate it

with us are Holly Birch and

Will Knapp, who became

engaged at the end of the

year. Some of you will

know Holly from Elaine’s

Dinner Theater, where she

is a regular performer, and

the Exit Zero store, where

she is a regular worker.

As for Will, he is a

local actor/musician and

also heads up marketing

for Cabanas and Martini

Beach. Congrats guys... you

made a super-sexy couple.

COVER STORY JACK WRIGHT

On some days at Higbee Beach (or

nights, if you’re feeling brave — it’s

spooky out there), the Delaware

Bay does a magic trick. You walk

the sand like you always do — wind

in your face, gulls arguing overhead, a ferry

boat off in the distance — then the beach

changes. Out of the wet sand, a set of rusted

rails and heavy wooden ties appears like

the shoreline is briefly remembering an old

dream.

We call them the ghost tracks, and they

don’t show themselves on a schedule. They

come and go on the bay’s terms: storms,

erosion, low tide... and who knows what else.

As elusive as they appear to be, we can

actually pin down when these tracks have

popped up in modern times, because photographers

and reporters have been chasing

them like rare birds.

• November 2014: A major reappearance,

with media reports stating that the

rusted tracks appeared magically and hadn’t

been visible since the 1930s.

• March 2018: Back-to-back storms

unearthed them again, prompting stories

in the Associated Press and The Weather

Channel.

• January 2021: A nor’easter and

shifting sands brought them back.

• May 11, 2022: Coastal storms and

low tide revealed them again — an event

widely documented, including detailed

reporting by AccuWeather.

Since then, the tracks have appeared

multiple times again, provoking another

tranche of compelling, spooky photos to

appear on social media.

But here’s the thing... that whole “first

appearance in 80 years” claim simply isn’t

Left: Artist Junius Allen painted this scene of

Cape May Sand Company in the 1930s. Opposite:

Liz Goldsmith shot the ghost tracks in 2022.

true! Back when I had dogs (there were

four mutts during one particularly mad, and

wonderful, time), I saw the tracks on several

occasions. The first time would have been

the winter of 2004-05. I know this because

my pups, April and Friday, were less than

a year old at the time and they came into

this world in March of that year. Being an

excellent dog daddy (and someone in need of

exercise), I walked my pups on Higbee Beach

twice a day, every day. So whatever weird

things were happening on Higbee (from

stubbornly naked beachgoers to the disappearance

of the Voodoo Tree to ghostly train

tracks), I was usually there to witness them.

I thought the appearance of those rusty

old tracks was cool, but I didn’t make a big

fuss about it — partly because there was no

social media on which to make a great fuss! I

think I briefly mentioned it in my Ramblings

column in this magazine and do recall a

couple of people not believing me. But I

never thought about it that much again, until

the appearance of the tracks in 2014 started

to attract crazy traffic to the parking lots at

Higbee and Sunset Beach. (The moniker of

“ghost tracks” probably helped pique people’s

interest.)

So, yes, the beach is doing what beaches

do — moving, eroding, reshaping. But what

it’s revealing is something most people don’t

expect to find at the edge of Cape May: a

piece of early-20th-century industry.

So where exactly did the tracks come

from? The story begins with a business name

that sounds almost too plain to be important:

the Cape May Sand Company, which began

life in 1905 and provided sand for construction,

using a beach-and-bayfront operation

where sand was scooped up, washed,

and then loaded into train cars.

Those cars ran along the beach

and into Cape May’s winter station

to be shipped north.

The tracks linked up to the

Atlantic City Railroad (aka the

Royal Route to the Sea), which

connected AC to Philadelphia.

The sand mining and dredging

continued after World War I,

with sand processed for glass and

cement products — but the city

suspended the operation in 1936

due to concerns about depleting

sand on bathing beaches.

But there’s more to the story

than simple sand. The tracks are

also tied to Bethlehem Steel —

specifically to munitions testing

during World War I.

Eugene Grace, a Goshen

native who would become president

of Bethlehem Steel, established

several ordnance testing

grounds in this county. One of

those grounds extended from

Higbee Beach north along the

bayfront toward Reed’s Beach, 16

miles up the coastline in Middle

Township.

Ammunition was brought to

Cape May by train, trucked to

Higbee, then carried to firing

areas on the beachfront by smallgauge

trains. The rail lines along

the beach were used to transport

munitions and cannons along

the coast of what is now the

wildlife management area.

After Cape May Sand

Company left the picture in

1936, a magnesite plant was built

on the site. The plant mixed salt

water extracted from the bay

with lime to create a magnesium

solution that was used for

the production of fire bricks.

The magnesite plant closed in

1983 and has remained an eyesore

ever since but, thankfully, is

being absorbed into the Higbee

Wildlife Management Area

restoration project, into which

$37.5 million is being poured by

New Jersey’s Department of the

Environment.

So if you’re standing on

Higbee Beach looking at those

rails, you’re not just seeing an

old train track on a beach. You’re

looking at the physical footprint

of a period when Cape May

County was doing industrial

work in service of war —and

doing it right on the sand.

Cape May has a well-earned

reputation for gingerbread

trim and beach days, but it has

always had another identity too:

a working coastline where the

national story shows up in very

local ways.

Or, to put it another way,

the bay rearranged the furniture

again.

One of the joys of this story

is that it keeps becoming realtime

news — history surfacing

into the present.

In 2022, historian Ben

Miller, author of our best-selling

history book, The First Resort,

described the tracks as “like hidden

treasure,” adding that “all of

a sudden they’re there... like a

portal to the past.”

That’s the pattern: a storm

happens, the tide cooperates,

someone gets tipped off, and

suddenly the beach is hosting a

pop-up museum exhibit — open

for a few hours, then gone.

As for that big fancy restoration

project, the DEP has

said that “the majority of the

ghost tracks will remain in

place,” but portions encountered

during restoration work may be

removed, cut, and stockpiled

“for future interpretive use by

the State.”

So, although the ghost tracks

may keep doing their disappearing

act over the years, a small

part of the story may eventually

be preserved in a way that

doesn’t depend on the perfect

storm.

In the meantime, conditions

are pretty ghost-track

friendly. Once the temperature

rises above freezing, fill your

flask with coffee, charge up your

iPhone and get out there to

record history. But take a minute

or five to enjoy the moment

before blowing up your social

feed. It’s beautiful out there (and

thankfully way too cold for nudists).

The History

The Montemaré Roma handbag,

available from Willow & Stone

(215 Decatur Street), blends

timeless sophistication with

thoughtful functionality — that

little tassel on the right discreetly

houses a whistle, while an

RFID blocking card offers data

protection. The bag features a

smooth vegan leather exterior and

water-resistant lined interior, so

we guess you could take it to the

beach if you were feeling extra

fancy! But it’s probably best to

keep it for those evenings where

you’re strolling down Jackson

Street, figuring out where to go for

a nightcap to finish off a perfect

Cape May day. Price is $148.

You may have noticed that it’s a little cold

out there — in fact, with the wind chill it

felt colder here than it did in the Antarctic

Peninsula, for crying out loud. Anyway,

want a dish that will warm you up inside?

We’re thinking about the 12-Hour Slow

Smoked Brisket from MudHen Brewing

Company in Wildwood. The dish is

seasoned with BBQ spice and homemade

BBQ sauce, served with baked beans,

coleslaw and cornbread. Pair it with one

of MudHen’s specialty beers and you’ve

got yourself a midwinter treat right there.

MudHen is open daily at 11am.

The Mount Vernon, located across from the

Cove beach in Cape May, was at one time

the world’s largest hotel, with 432 rooms

and a dining room that could accommodate

3,000. But not long after it opened, it was

destroyed by a fire in September of 1856.

The blaze resulted in six deaths, including

co-owner Philip Cain. The fire, suspected

to be arson, destroyed the massive wooden

structure in about 90 minutes. You can read

about this and all sorts of fabulous historical

stories in The First Resort, our beautiful

coffee table history book. It’s available from

The Answer Lady invites inquiries

from gentle readers on all manner

of relationship quandaries, matters

of the heart and ethics. If you’d

like to send a query, write to info@

exitzero.us. Or just sit back, enjoy a cup of

coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein.

Dear Answer Lady

My girlfriend and I are both in college

and on a limited budget. We will be

home in Cape May this weekend and want

to celebrate our first Valentine’s together,

but have no idea where to go for good

food on the cheap. We also enjoy specialty

cocktails. (Not to worry, we Uber everywhere.)

Finally, we’d also like to have fun

afterwards. Can you help? — Romeo

Dear Romeo

Romeo, oh Romeo, wherefore art the

best places to go? Fortunately for thee,

Cape May, even in the dead of winter, has

enough to choose from to make this Valentine’s

Day memorable. Let’s start with dinner

“on the cheap.” We don’t know about

cheap, but we do know about affordable. As

to cocktails, almost all the restaurants offer

The Answer Lady

Wise answers to life’s perplexing questions

specialty drinks. Flip through Exit Zero

for a comprehensive look, but consider the

Cricket Club, Oyster Bay and Pier House.

Off island, The Local Tavern has been getting

rave reviews and they, along with the

Cricket Club, have entertainment on Saturdays.

Hey, no matter where you are — just

being together should be special enough.

Dear Answer Lady

I want to have two or three couples over

for hors d’oeuvres and wine this weekend.

The problem is, one of the women, whom

I like very much is extremely controlling.

She immediately takes over my kitchen,

which is my domain, and I hate “help.” I

make a point of staying out of other people’s

kitchens, save for helping to clear

the table. I entertain so my friends can

have a night off. Not only does she “help,”

she starts bossing me around giving me

“helpful hints” on how I make such and

such better. How can I discourage her

without hurting her feelings? — Culinary

Dominatrix

Dear Dominatrix

First, you could have someone cater the

event — Westside Market is a good place

to get a lovely tray of yummy things. Cape

May Cheese Shop is another. Whether you

do your own prep or get someone else to do

it, make sure when your guests arrive, there

is nothing to do except sit back and enjoy. If

she insists on “helping” to clean up, either

let her or explain as you did, that you entertain

so she can have a night off. However, it

sounds like she really can’t help herself, so

maybe let it go.

Valentine’s Day is approaching, but

compared to birds we are behind

the curve. By the time you get

around to swapping Valentine’s

Day cards or having dinner for two

in Cape May, some bird species will already

be well into their own courtship sequence,

and some are already incubating eggs.

If you take a morning stroll through

woodlands, you’ll be hearing the plaintive

pee-ter... pee-ter of Tufted Titmouse, a rakishly

crested year-round resident whose

coupling efforts begin late winter. Downey

Woodpeckers will be drumming–tapping

out in the language of woodpeckers that this

is their territory. Rough translation: “Hey

babe. You and me, how about it?” And “Beat

it bub, go find your own street corner.”

In coastal inlets, the flagellum-tailed

Long-tailed Duck will be yodeling his plaintive

“south-southerly” chant and engaging

in spirited tail chases with almost consenting

females. Pair-bonding now saves valuable

time in June when pairs reach the Arctic

and get down to the serious business of

raising a family. Summers are short in the

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

Arctic and good nesting ponds occupied as

soon as they thaw. Once called Old Squaws

because the incessant clamor of love-struck

ducks reminded Arctic trappers of the gabble

of old squaws, the American Ornithological

Society ditched the pejorative name

in 2000. Nevertheless, the vocal proclivities

of Long-tailed Duck are celebrated in the

bird’s scientific name, Clangula hyemalis.

Clangula is from the Latin clangere (to

resound), while Hyemalis means wintry.

An apt description for this noisy winter resident

of channels and choppy water.

Other waterfowl, too, are courting,

among them Canada Geese, who will hatch

first broods by May.

In Cape May’s forests, Bald Eagles and

Great-horned Owls are already incubating

their eggs. In this age of rising temperatures,

birds find it easier to keep chicks warm than

cool during the summer months. In addition,

early nesting gives this year’s young

more practice hunting on their own before

another winter sets in.

Bald Eagles depend heavily upon

Osprey to provide fish for eagle chicks. The

arrangement is one-sided — eagles steal the

Osprey’s catch. But Osprey return to Cape

May in mid-March, just about the time

eagle chicks hatch. What’s for dinner? Menhaden,

hopefully, but with Osprey breeding

success faltering, there is no guarantee

of that. If Osprey numbers continue to be

challenged by a shortage of menhaden, can

eagle numbers be far behind? This year’s

Osprey breeding success should tell the tale.

Keep your talons crossed.

American football is a complicated

game with a 90-page rule book,

yet fans can enjoy it without

fully understanding it. Some fans

ignore the whole season and just

enjoy the playoffs. Literature can be like

that, too.

Some people avoid Shakespeare because

they fear they won’t get it, or, as one scholar

says, they see his work as a literary IQ test.

But what if you gave yourself permission

to treat Shakespeare — or other literary

giants — like playoff football? Learn a little

about it, then watch a quarter — or an Act

— or two. Ignore what seems confusing,

and enjoy the parts you like.

Dr Sylvia Baer, Cape May’s poet laureate,

offers a chance to learn more about

literature that “explores what it means to be

human.” Dr Baer, a Fellow at Yale University,

has been teaching literature for half a

century. She’s offering four Zoom seminars

this February. These classes are designed

to for readers with “any level of knowledge

and experience who wish to learn more

about literature.” Safe in the hands of a

She is a sweet, sensitive girl and only

a year old. Nova needs a quiet home with

kind people. She will do best in a home

with no children or dogs. To meet Nova,

contact the shelter for an appointment.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three dog-tastic pooches from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923

ARIES is a male Cane Corso with a big

heart. He was sadly surrendered when his

owners could no longer care for him. This

large, handsome boy is house-trained, neutered

and up to date on all vaccinations.

Aries is good with kids and would do best

in a home where he is the only pet. He has

wonderful leash manners and knows his

‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘wait’ cues.

DARLA was very much loved by her family,

but they were unable to continue caring

for her. Her favorite activities are splashing

in the baby pool and playing fetch. Darla

has the potential to be the perfect family

companion as long as she is the only pet in

the house and her humans continue to keep

her active and involved. Her previous family

stated she did well with kids.

FINN is a large Rottweiler & Shepherd mix

who was brought to the shelter when his

family could no longer keep him. He is shy

at first, but once he is comfortable, he is loving

and playful. Finn loves fetch and back

scratches. His leash manners are excellent.

Finn would be a good fit for a family that

will let him progress at his own pace, has

older children, and no other animals.

Happy St. Valentine’s Day, all you lovebirds!

There are so many topics to

cover — but first, a couple romantic

movies. I’m not the best judge of

these movies, so maybe you let me

know what you’re watching too. The Wrong

Paris: Dawn (Miranda Cosgrove of iCarly

fame) signs up for a reality TV dating show

she thinks is in Paris, France but is actually in

Paris, Texas. Oops. It was… mmm, okay. Not

without tropes.

Netflix’s People We Meet on Vacation

is dubbed the ultimate “we’re just friends”

romance. The leads (Emily Bader and Tom

Blyth) are adorbs. And the travel element

is fun. But are these enough to move you

beyond the cliche (you know, the whole he

says, “I want to have a schedule” while she

says, “I want to wing it”)? Watch and let me

know.

Meantime, the big new release for Valentine’s

Day is the granddaddy romance of

them all… Wuthering Heights starring Margot

Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Ooooh! He is

fresh off his Oscar nomination for portrayal

of the creature in Frankenstein. The new take

The Movie Column

By arts columnist Tom Sims

on Bronte’s ultimate romance novel is getting

good preview buzz. It comes out Saturday.

Go see it and report back!

Speaking of Oscar noms, we have a lot

to chat about before the upcoming Academy

Awards on March 15. Sinners received

a record number 16 nominations. Outstanding!

This will happen more as Hollywood and

independent studios put out fewer and fewer

films. The ones that get made are the ones

that get nominated.

Speaking of independent film, and yes,

this week I am, in fact, employing a lot of free

association. Happening this Sunday, February

15, the Film Independent Spirit Awards

take place on YouTube! This year, I’m more

excited than ever. That’s because a few movies

are making a big impact on a low budget.

I’ve heard your criticisms — yeah, yeah, if it’s

an independent studio, then it’s an independent

film. But for me, shoestring budgets still

matter!

One of Them Days was a fun movie with

good vibes. The film’s stars, SZA and Keke

Palmer, got Spirit Award nominations, along

with first film and first screenplay noms. All

good stuff! But at $14 million to make, is it

indie? Sorry, Baby cost $1.5 million and is up

in multiple categories too.

But my hope is for If I Had Legs I’d Kick

You. Mary Bronstein is up for Best Director.

Rose Byrne, the lead, got a Spirit Award and

Oscar nom. The cost to make: $1,500ks! Now,

THAT’s indie!

So much going on! Let me know what

you’re seeing — email flixyoumissed@gmail.

com.
