This is what Lincoln’s main 

street looks like on a weekend 

– lots of trucks and equipment 

and nobody operating them. 

Suffering businesses 

just want the council and 

contractor Fulton Hogan to 

speed up stage one of the $46 

million upgrade of Gerald St, 

and finish it well before it is 

scheduled in July. 

Otherwise some fear they 

will not survive. 

There was hope a briefing 

of councillors on the issue last 

week by council management 

would have given businesses 

some hope. But nothing 

concrete came out of it. 

"We are losing hope we can 

survive this,” Cottage Cafe 

owner Surekha Pudi told 

Selwyn Times. 

The only thing that will 

make a real difference is 

getting the work done faster, 

she said. 

She has already let one staff 

member go. 

Council infrastructure 

and property executive 

director Tim Mason told 

Selwyn Times on Monday 

all options to accelerate the 

work were being investigated. 

“A range of options will be 

considered including, but 

not limited to, road closures, 

partial closures, weekend and 

night working and extended 

day hours,” he said.

The major problems Lincoln 

businesses are having with 

the road works almost 

certainly stem from how the 

contracts were drawn up 

between council and the big 

companies which are doing 

the work. 

Those contracts were 

sorted last year and weekend 

work for Fulton Hogan, the 

big player in the equation, 

doesn’t seem to have been 

part of the deal. 

There was some work 

being done on a Saturday 

morning leading up to 

Christmas, but that appears 

to have been Orion stuff. 

Businesses were hoping 

to get some good news from 

council last week, but that 

did not happen, though all is 

not lost on the weekend work 

front just yet (see page 1).

Scholarship planned as community 

mourns 10-year-old’s tragic death

A fundraising page has been 

launched to create a scholarship 

in memory of 10-year-old Alex 

Bennett. 

Alex was tragically killed just 

outside his Leeston Rd home on 

Wednesday afternoon last week 

while checking the mail. 

Adding to the tragedy, Selwyn 

Times has been told the driver 

of the vehicle involved was a 

mother travelling with her own 

children. 

A Givealittle page has been set 

up to support Alex’s family and 

to establish a scholarship fund 

in his name. 

Created by Mary Batchelar, 

a parent at Springston School 

which Alex attended, the page 

had raised $4662 by Monday 

afternoon. 

“Alex was a beautiful, clever 

beyond words, amazingly kind 

boy who shared a special bond 

with mine,” Batchelar said on 

LinkedIn. 

“He loved Minecraft and science 

and talking about all sorts 

of things. 

“We are grieving tremendously 

for the loss of his life and 

for the pain and devastation his 

family are feeling.” 

A celebration of Alex’s life 

for the school community was 

planned to be held at Springston 

Community Hall at 4pm today. 

Alex Bennett died after being hit by a vehicle just outside his Leeston Rd home on Wednesday afternoon last week. 

“The family has expressed 

how much they appreciate the 

incredible outpouring of love 

and support from our school 

whānau. This is a time to stand 

together and reflect on the 

beautiful light that Alex was in 

our kura (school),” a statement 

on the school’s social media 

page said. 

“As we navigate this time 

together, please remember to 

hold each other close and reach 

out if you or your tamariki need 

extra support.” 

Police said they could provide 

no further information while 

the investigation into Alex’s 

death was ongoing, and victim 

support had been in contact 

with those involved.

In brief 

Council rates error 

The council has apologised after 

a rates calculation error resulted 

in ratepayers being overcharged 

by about $1.6 million. The mistake 

occurred when updated property 

valuations were not correctly 

accounted for and was identified by 

a ratepayer. While residents’ rates 

bills included the updated property 

valuations, the way in which the 

council calculated the general rate 

component was incorrect. A council 

staff review found a required step 

to limit how much valuations could 

increase, a safeguard in council’s 

financial strategy, did not occur. A 

cap that should have been applied 

was missed and some ratepayers 

were overcharged. The council 

estimated a full-year impact of 

around $85 for most residential 

properties, and about $500 for rural 

properties, which generally have 

higher valuation increases. The 

council is also commissioning an 

external review at a cost of about 

$30,000, with corrections to be 

applied in the quarter four rates bill 

in April. 

Bridge closed today 

The Waimakariri Gorge Bridge will 

be closed for several hours today 

while council contractors repair 

damage caused by a driver doing 

a burnout on the bridge shortly 

after it reopened following several 

days of closure for resealing last 

month. The bridge will be closed 

from 11am-3pm, but will reopen 

for 20-minute intervals at 11.40am, 

12.40pm and 1.40pm. The council 

has yet to confirm the cost of the 

damage to ratepayers.

Could Rolly’s community centre be sold? 


A possible bid to buy the 

Rolleston Community Centre will 

be discussed behind closed doors 

today. 

The prospect of a sale has 

raised alarm for Rolleston Residents 

Association chair Mark 

Alexander, who said he was 

“deeply concerned” about the 

proposal, which appears on 

the public-excluded agenda for 

today’s council meeting. 

Alexander said the council 

should reject the proposal. 

“My guess is 

that to replace the 

Rolleston Community 

Centre 

with an equivalent 

building providing 

equivalent 

spaces would 

cost $25-$30 million. 

It is obvious

purchaser would 

not be offering 

anywhere near that price,” 

Alexander said in an email to 

councillors on Monday. 

“The meeting spaces and 

stadium are well used. The 

equivalent spaces are not available 

elsewhere in Rolleston for 

many of the community centre's 

users, particularly at affordable 

prices.” 

The council would not comment 

on whether it had received 

an offer. 

Mayor Lydia Gliddon confirmed 

there had been an 

approach to the council, responding 

to Alexander’s concerns. 

Councillors will discuss a bid for the Rolleston Community Centre behind closed doors today. 

“Council was approached 

by an external party, and the 

paper before councillors is 

about whether that approach 

should be considered further 

at all. No position has been 

taken, and no outcome has been 

predetermined,” she said. 

“Matters of this nature are 

initially considered in a publicexcluded 

session because they 

involve commercially sensitive 

information. That protects 

the council and ultimately the 

community from speculation or 

disadvantage.”

She said any

use of the centre

are well used, where there 

are gaps, how communities 

are growing, and how we 

can ensure that community 

spaces remain accessible and 

affordable over the long term. 

“No decisions about 

individual facilities are made in 

advance of that work,” she said.

council. 

The webpage set up by 

the council will use the page 

to update residents on key 

reform areas now under way 

or signalled by central government, 

including rates capping, 

development levels, Resource 

Management Act reform and the 

Government’s Simplifying Local 

Government initiative. 

Said Mayor Lydia Gliddon: 

“These reforms are like a complex 

puzzle, each piece affects 

another, and the full picture is 

still being formed. Our job is to 

assess the information, make 

our submissions and make 

sure Selwyn’s interests are represented 

as the pieces come 

together.” 

Gliddon said the reforms have 

the potential to shape the future 

of how councils operate and how 

services are funded.

Sun said he has lost about 

70% of his turnover, and was 

unsure if he could stay open 

until July.

three Springs Ward councillors, 

Sarah Barnsley, Denise Carrick 

and Aaron McGlinchy, to ask 

them what the next step would 

be to speed up work as an 

outcome of last week’s briefing.

St and West Belt intersection. 

After stage one, work is 

expected to start on a major 

hospitality and retail precinct, 

called Lincoln Village, on 

the corner of Gerald and 

Robert Sts. 

Work on the precinct 

is planned to start in the 

middle of the year and will be 

completed in five stages over 

two to four years. 

Mason Comber might only be four, but it did not stop him from 

mashing the competition at The Famous Grouse Hotel’s potato growing 

competition. Mason won three categories: Best overall potato, most 

potatoes, and biggest potato. He was by far the youngest entrant, with 

all 30 other competitors adults. Mason’s grandparents, Dave Berry and 

Sharron Comber, helped him plant the potatoes in the bucket supplied by 

The Famous Grouse. “Mason has looked after the plant watering every 

day, along with his strawberry patch, since November,” Berry said. On 

judging day, Berry said Mason was so proud of his potatoes, he walked 

around showing them off to the contestants and patrons. Mason won a 

Speights chilly bin and a pair of Crocs for his efforts. Famous Grouse coowner 

Shaughn McNabb said the competition was a “good bit of fun”. 

He said on judging day some competitors also brought in their dead potato 

plants, which had not grown, as a joke. 

Beach walks within reach 

Graham moved to the coast for 

the beach lifestyle. At 68, the retired 

builder had traded his suburban 

home for a beachfront property, 

dreaming of daily walks along the 

sand, hearing the waves at night. 

“I’d moved here for this,” 

Graham says, gesturing at the 

sweeping coastline. “But I was 

barely managing one short walk a 

week.” 

His wife faced similar challenges. 

They’d both head out together, 

but neither could enjoy the beach 

properly. Their dream retirement 

was looking very different from 

what they’d imagined, all thanks to 

aging knees that didn’t cooperate. 

“We never talked about it,” he 

recalls. “Just accepted that this was 

becoming our life. Watching other 

people walk by with ease and enjoy

from New Zealand to Victoria to 

help with devastating bushfires. 

“It’s nice to be back having 

some cool weather and green 

grass,” he said. 

The Lincoln resident was 

part of a team made up of 

DoC rangers, firefighters and 

other specialists helping with 

the fires, which burnt through 

about 400,000ha across the 

state. The fires destroyed almost 

900 buildings, including more 

than 250 homes, and killed 

more than 15,000 livestock, 

along with countless wildlife. 

“Talking to the farmers, they 

were just so appreciative of our 

work,” he said. 

Alexander was a crew leader 

of a five-person team based 

out of Tallangatta fighting the 

Walwa fire in the north east 

of the state near the border 

with New South Wales. The fire 

covered about 120,000ha. 

“It is almost the size of 

Christchurch City, which is 

140,000ha, so it’s huge.” 

Aside from the 

size, Alexander 

said they also 

had to watch 

for snakes and 

spiders and also 

drink much more 

water than he 

would if fighting 

a fire in New 

Zealand due to the heat. 

The jobs ranged from putting 

out spot fires to getting rid of 

hot spots, putting in fire breaks 

and removing hazardous trees. 

One day, Alexander’s crew 

was helicoptered in to assist 

with a fire about 4ha in size 

started by a lightning strike 

south of the main Walwa fire. 

Alexander has been involved 

in both Port Hills fires in 2017 

and 2024, and the Craigieburn 

fire last year which covered 

about 1000ha. 

He has also done two 

previous deployments to 

Victoria in 2012 and 2013.

but New Zealand doesn’t 

compare to the scale and the 

intensity of the fires over 

there.” 

Alexander has been a ranger 

for about 26 years, working in 

what is known as the Mahaanui 

District, which covers north 

of the Rakaia Gorge to the 

Waimakariri Gorge, around 

Rangiora, Amberley, up to the 

Hurunui River. 

“If there is a fire or another 

emergency, I could be anywhere 

in the country.” 

While Alexander enjoys 

the work, he said it can mean 

missing special events. 

He has three children, Noah, 

19, Ruby, 16, and Jasmine, 13, 

and during this deployment, he 

missed the birthdays of Noah 

and Jasmine. 

“That made this trip a little 

more difficult.”

children for about a month. 

“After 20 years of 

marriage, (Michelle) is very 

understanding because quite 

often there’s a phone call in the 

middle of the night.”

Bid to drop speed limit rejected

place is absolutely chocka and 

swimming with people.” 

He said a 30km/h speed limit 

would be more appropriate and 

would make it safer for people 

stopping at the settlement and 

crossing the road.

10-30km/h speed limits are 

unconventional, low‐volume, 

or low‐speed types described in 

the rule as parking areas, beach 

access points, riverbeds, cultural 

and recreational reserve, or 

similar.” 

Mackenzie said the community 

had also requested the 

speed limit between Arthur’s 

Pass and Otira be lowered to 

80km/h. 

Caygill said that request had 

yet to be considered. 

“The recent focus (for NZTA) 

has been on speeds through 

villages and townships such as 

Sheffield and Kirwee, that have 

been of greatest concern to communities 

and councils.” 

The consultation for speed 

limit drops from 70km/h to 

50km/h in Sheffield and Kirwee 

runs until March 6 and can be

Community faces long 

wait for pool handover

It will be some time yet before 

the Sheffield community can 

take ownership of its pool. 

The 73-year-old Sheffield 

Memorial Pool was saved 

from demolition after locals 

convinced the council to 

transfer it into community 

ownership. 

While the council agreed to 

the deal in April last year, the 

transfer of ownership is still 

likely to take another six to 12 

months. 

Council head of sport and 

recreation James Richmond 

told the Malvern Community 

Board the process was complex 

because the pool sits across four 

separate parcels of land, which 

Land Information New Zealand 

must verify before ownership 

can be officially transferred. 

Of the four land parcels, two 

are owned by the council, one 

is part of a deceased estate, 

and the fourth is owned by the 

Department of Conservation. 

“We’ve had to resurvey 

the land, and the adverse 

possession application (a legal 

process enabling a person 

to claim ownership of land 

they have occupied without 

the owner’s permission for a 

continuous, specific period) is 

going through to LINZ. We’re 

hopeful to have it resolved 

in the next six to 12 months,” 

Richmond said. 

The Tawera Trust will take 

over ownership of the pool. 

Trustee Zara Sandom said the 

lengthy legal process was not 

unexpected. 

She said it had been heartening 

to see the community 

rally behind the pool through 

fundraising and working bees, 

despite it being unable to open 

for swimming. 

“For us as trustees doing all 

the behind-the-scenes legal 

work, it becomes worth it when 

the community turns up to help 

us with a working bee,” she said.

Bruce and Katelyn Ellis, being 

members of the Selwyn Response team, 

NZRT-21, helping their community 

during Civil Defence emergencies has 

been a hugely rewarding opportunity. 

They are encouraging people to check 

out the team, through information 

evenings being held on Wednesday 18 

February and Wednesday 4 March at 

the Council’s Rolleston offices. 

NZRT-21 is a nationally accredited 

Emergency Response team, working 

hard to achieve their national 

reaccreditation status late last year. 

The team trains weekly to the national 

standard in light urban search and 

rescue, flood response, storm response, 

communications, and other specialist 

tasks. 

Bruce was one of the first volunteers 

when the team was set up in 2018. 

“I saw an ad in the paper. I was 

thinking, ‘what can I give back to the 

community’.” 

It’s a decision he’s pleased he made 

helping people during floods and fires 

and making sure people are safe. His 

stories inspired Katelyn, who was 

initially nervous about signing up, 

but says the team has been really 

supportive and provided a great 

opportunity. 

Her first time event working with the 

team was supporting people through 

last year’s flooding here in Selwyn. 

“We were mapping the roads, going 

wherever we were needed and doing 

welfare checks, making sure everyone 

was safe and that they had people to go 

to if they needed to leave their homes. 

It was good knowing that what we have 

learnt is helping.” 

Volunteering together and making a 

difference has been special Bruce says. 

“It’s cool, I’ve seen her grow 

within herself. But the whole group 

becomes like a big family and help 

each other out even in daily life. 

One of the reasons I’ve stayed is that 

environment.” 

Katelyn says she encourages anyone 

to come along to the information 

evenings and find out more. 

“I’d say give it a go. I was worried 

about the learning, but you have 

great support from the team. It’s been 

amazing. Go for it. You never know 

how much you will learn and how 

much you will grow from it.”

Vibration science could tell pests to buzz off 

In a room at the Bioeconomy 

Science Institute in Lincoln, Dr 

Mark MacDougall refocuses a 

laser so the beam is centred on a 

strip of metal tape attached to a 

tomato plant leaf. He is using it to 

detect minuscule movements. 

The source of that motion is 

a tiny greenhouse whitefly on 

the underside of the leaf, communicating 

in a form of insect 

language we cannot hear or feel – 

a language of vibrations. 

Before startwing his PhD, Mac- 

Dougall had never heard of this 

vibrational language, known 

as biotremology, but the idea 

quickly captivated him. 

“I just had no idea that vibrations 

were just a part of the way 

animals communicated,” he said. 

“I had no idea that it was so 

widespread throughout the world 

and it was basically this entire 

world of communication that we 

humans are really not privy to.” 

Insects produce vibrations in 

a variety of ways, he said, much 

like different musicians in a 

band. 

“Some will simply shake their 

bodies. Some will scrape little 

plates on the inside of their body, 

kind of like a grasshopper might. 

“But they can also be used to 

send vibrations through a plant 

stem as well. Insects, like termites, 

will bang their heads on 

the ground to send vibrations

throughout a nest,” MacDougall 

said. 

Different vibration patterns 

convey different messages, 

which brings MacDougall into 

this sound- and vibration-isolated 

room, where he is trying to 

record and decode the greenhouse 

whitefly’s signals – with 

the hope of eventually using that 

knowledge against them. 

Greenhouse whitefly is the 

most common whitefly species 

here and can be found yearround 

in greenhouse crops, 

particularly tomatoes, eggplants, 

capsicums and cucurbits. Adults 

are about 1.5mm long and feed 

on sap, weakening plants and 

encouraging sooty mould. In the 

right conditions, populations can 

explode and severely damage 

crops. 

Tomato grower Pete Mundy 

knows the problem well. From 

a hectare-sized glasshouse in 

the Heathcote Valley, he grows 

cherry tomatoes hydroponically. 

Mundy has his own methods 

of pest control to try keep the 

whitefly numbers in check, but 

he’s also allowed researchers 

from the Bioeconomy Science 

Institute to run a series of biotremology 

research trials on 

some plants. 

While Mundy uses his own 

pest-control methods, he has also 

allowed researchers to run biotremology 

trials on some plants. 

The goal, said project lead Dr 

Lloyd Stringer, is to test whether 

vibrational communication can 

be used to deter pests in a realworld 

growing environment. 

“We could develop something 

here in the lab, for example, and 

go, ‘oh, we’ve got a great idea, 

this will work’. Go to the glasshouse 

and go, ‘oh heck, that’s not 

going to work. We haven’t got 

power plugs every five metres’ 

or something like that. So... that 

helps us make sure we’re developing 

something that’s going to 

be useful and applicable without 

too many tweaks.” 

The first trial, which began 

in October 2025, used a single 

vibrational tone previously identified 

by Japanese researchers as 

discouraging egg-laying. 

Mini-shakers attached to metal 

beams transmitted vibrations to 

plants every 15 minutes over six 

weeks, while entomologist Dr 

Rachael Horner counted eggs on 

treated and control plants. 

However, once they crunched 

the numbers, the team did not 

find much difference between 

control and vibration areas, 

although there seemed to be a 

slight trend for 

lower egg laying 

on the treatment 

plants. 

Stringer said 

many variables 

were at play, 

including uneven 

whitefly distribution 

and questions Pete Mundy 

about how strong 

vibrations need to be and how 

far they travel through plants. 

Future trials will increase 

vibration frequency, and 

researchers are working with 

a Christchurch company to 

develop bespoke devices to 

expand coverage. 

While the concept of using 

biotremology for pest control is 

not new, Stringer said cost and 

practical challenges have limited 

its use. 

For growers like Mundy, however, 

the prospect of another 

non-chemical tool is appealing. 

“The technology is getting 

there, we just need to do it now.”

Ex-Black Fern bringing passion, experience to 

Ellesmere Rugby’s new game developer, 

former Black Fern Steph Broomhall, 

combines decades of experience with 

a passion for coaching and community 

development. She tells Sam Coughlan 

what she hopes to achieve 

How long has it been since you started at Ellesmere? 

“This is my third week – it’s been very 

busy. We’ve been away for the New 

Zealand Rugby conference, which was 

awesome and full of good learnings. We 

had an introduction week first, and now 

we’ve hit the ground running.” 

What does the job involve? 

“My values are to inspire and grow my 

community, and I do that through player 

and coach development. I support coaches 

to develop their skill sets so they can pass 

that on to their players, and I focus on 

player development to make it a really 

positive experience.” 

 

How involved have you been with Ellesmere in the 

past? 

“I’ve been coaching there for a long time 

– at the Prebbleton Rugby Club when my 

kids were little. My second oldest is 18, and 

I started coaching him at Prebbleton when 

he was about three, so I’ve been doing 

grassroots coaching for a long time.” 

Do all your kids play rugby? 

“Yes, I’ve got four, and three of them 

have played for Prebbleton. My kids are 

24, 18, 16, and 13. My second oldest, Ben, 

recently had a go with the Junior Crusaders, 

which was a really awesome 

experience for him. My oldest is now the 

rugby development officer at Sunnybank 

Rugby Club in Brisbane. 

“Ben has just left school and is going to 

the University of Canterbury. Beau is still

at St Thomas, and my daughter has just 

started school in town.” 

 

Tell me a bit about your own background as a 

Black Fern? 

“I first made the squad in ‘99, and then 

made the team in 2003. That was an awesome 

growth period for me, straight out of 

school, into the squad. Then five years of 

being told, ‘you’re not quite good enough’. 

“Fortunately, I had the mindset where 

I really wanted it, so I persisted and had 

the most phenomenal opportunities and 

experience.” 

 

You were part of the World Cup winning team in 

2006, what was that like? 

“It was an unreal experience. My mum 

and my brother came over to watch me, 

and I think I had a good tournament. I 

might have set up the winning try, so that 

was probably a highlight.” 

Was that game the last time you played for the 

Black Ferns? 

“I had my first son straight after 

retiring. I went out to play for Dunsandel 

Women, so my kids grew up on the side 

of the field, raised in the rugby club with 

a really beautiful community around 

them.” 

 

How did your life change after your international 

retirement? 

“I had my son Ben in 2007, so my 

ambitions around rugby changed. I put 

all my energy into raising my tamariki, 

supporting my whānau, and being there 

for my children, which was my highest 

priority at the time.” 

 

What did you do for work during that time? 

“I was very lucky. After graduating 

from Lincoln University, I managed to 

play for the Black Ferns and Canterbury 

while studying. I was then granted a 

Prime Minister’s scholarship – I’m not 

sure if they still do those – for athletes 

achieving well in sport to go back and 

study. 

“I love education and learning, and 

I thought, ‘what could I do?’ I decided 

to try teaching and got my diploma in 

primary teaching.” 

Where did you teach? 

“I started with some extra papers at 

Hornby Primary (while finishing teachers 

college) and was offered part-time work 

there. Then I got pregnant with my 

son and continued working at Hornby 

through my pregnancy. After a break, I 

worked at Prebbleton Play Centre as a 

facilitator. 

“All my tamariki went through there, so 

I could have them with me and still teach. 

Most recently, I worked at The Champion 

Centre for five years, specialising in 

children with additional needs.”

What was that like? 

“It was an absolute blessing. There’s the 

most amazing women and men who work 

in that space who just have a huge amount 

of knowledge. But it’s tough – these families 

go through some really difficult times. 

“My role was supporting the child in the 

preschool. It was really eye-opening to see 

what their whānau go through, and really 

rewarding to see it make an impact and 

make a little difference.” 

Does it bear any similarities to what you will be 

doing now with Ellesmere Rugby? 

“Very much so. I have a real understanding 

of children’s and teenagers’ needs. I’d 

say one of my strengths is being intuitive 

about people. 

“As a coach, I can take a broader perspective 

on what each player or coach 

needs. I hope to support them to not just 

to grow their skills, but also to grow as 

people.” 

How long will you remain involved in rugby? 

“At the moment, I’m just sinking my 

teeth in, learning what’s required, and 

making sure what I do matters. 

“When I no longer see a path to make an 

impact, that will be my signal to step back. 

For now, I’m passionate about adding 

value and having a positive impact.”

Tight at the top as country 

sides chase semi-final spots

Weedons and Darfield have been joined 

by Pleasant Point in the hunt for top 

spot in the Canterbury Country one-day 

cricket competition. 

Darfield’s loss to Sefton on Saturday, 

coupled with Pleasant Point’s win 

over Cheviot, means the top three are 

separated by just six points: 

Weedons lead on 46, followed by 

Darfield on 43 and Pleasant Point 

on 40. 

There are four rounds left, but 

each team still has a bye week to 

navigate, with Darfield off this 

weekend. 

Weedons kept their lead thanks 

to a two-wicket win over Ohoka, 

with Sam Chamberlain scoring 32 

not out to see the side home after 

earlier taking three wickets. 

Chamberlain’s 3/48, alongside 

former Canterbury fast bowler Ed 

Nuttall (3/24) and Taylor Holland 

(4/26), helped bowl Ohoka out for 

210. 

A small collapse in Weedons’ 

chase saw them reach the total 

with eight wickets down. Holland 

scored 37 opening the batting, 

while wicketkeeper Andrew Taylor 

top-scored with 43. 

Darfield went down to Sefton after 

being restricted to just 188/8 batting first.

The Black Caps might be in India for 

the T20 World Cup, but closer to home 

Selwyn’s Jeremy Wilson is gearing up for 

a world cup of his own. 

The national over 70s cricket team, 

known as the Grey Caps, will host the 

Over-70s World Cup at grounds across 

Canterbury starting on February 18. 

Wilson, who lives near Tai Tapu, is 

one of five in the squad who play for 

OVER-70S WORLD CUP GAMES

Feb 22: USA v Rest Of World, Darfield Domain; 

Feb 24: England v Australia, Bert Sutcliffe Oval; 

Feb 26: New Zealand v India, Bert Sutcliffe Oval; 

Mar 1: USA v Sri Lanka, Darfield Domain; 

Mar 3: India v USA, Rhodes Park 

Canterbury, while a further three live in 

the region but play for Otago. 

“We might be a bit older, but you never 

lose the desire to win and your competitive 

spirit,” Wilson said. 

“And we’ve got guys in our team, I 

don’t think it would matter whether 

you’re playing darts or pickleball or 

cricket, they want to win. You never lose 

that.” 

West Melton’s Hamish Cochrane, who 

plays for Otago in the national domestic 

tournament, is on standby should 

injuries occur. 

With the Grey Caps playing a world 

cup game every two days, fitness is an 

important focus. 

Said Wilson: “I go to the gym five times 

a week, and then on top of that, I play 

tennis three times a week, and pickleball 

as well. Plus, I’ve got a dog that needs a 

walk every day. 

“The other importat thing is a lot of 

stretching – making sure we’re still able 

to stretch and get the muscles working. 

Some of these guys can run in, scoop the 

ball up with one hand and throw it in 

from the boundary, they look and move 

like they’re 35 years old. 

“They are fantastic athletes.” 

The Over-70s World Cup features eight 

teams who will play each other in the 

round-robin, with the top two teams to play 

in the final at Hagley Oval on March 5. 

Five matches will be played in Selwyn, 

with Lincoln’s Bert Sutcliffe Oval hosting 

two, Darfield Domain two, and Rhodes 

Park in Tai Tapu one. 

New Zealand’s opening match is 

against the Rest of the World team – 

made up of players from non-competing 

nations such as Pakistan and Scotland 

– on February 18 at Mandeville Sports 

Centre in Ohoka. 

The Grey Caps will then face Sri Lanka, 

Australia, the United States, India, 

England and Canada, with the match 

against India scheduled for February 26 

at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln. 

Wilson said the key fixtures would be 

against Australia on February 22 and 

England on March 1, with the Grey Caps 

likely needing to win at least one to 

reach the final. The team finished fourth 

in 2024. 

“I played in the last world cup in 

England, which was fantastic, but with 

travel and accommodation it was quite 

an expensive trip and a lot of guys 

couldn’t make it,” he said. 

“We’ve got a substantially better 

team this year, and we’re hoping to be 

competitive. 

“The English and the Aussies are in 

the middle of a three-test series at the 

moment in Australia, so they’ll be in 

good nick.” 

Wilson said he was just looking 

forward to getting out on the pitch and 

competing. 

“The worst that can happen is we lose 

a cricket game. 

“But we will have a good time and 

we’ll enjoy ourselves. It’s just lovely to 

be able to still do it at our age, that’s the 

bonus.” 

The tournament starts next 

Wednesday with New Zealand against 

the Rest Of World. 

Sri Lanka are playing Canada at 

Burnside Park, while Australia come 

up against India at Burwood Park, and 

England meet USA at Sydenham Park.

The Giving 

Garden Festival 

Selwyn Central Community Care is a local 

volunteer organisation that serves the local 

Rolleston, Weedons, Burnham and West 

Melton communities by providing transport 

to medical appointments. We have been 

operating since the 1990’s so not new kids 

on the block. 

All our volunteers are police vetted. We 

travel to Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals 

and anywhere that is needed as appointments 

are wide and varied these days. Many of 

our clients are on a pension and are unable 

to drive anymore. Our volunteer drivers 

pick clients up from their homes and on 

the way home we can stop at the pharmacy 

if required. 

can assist people to stay in their own homes 

as long as possible it is good for all. We also 

have a community van that takes people for 

social outings, morning tea, lunch and day 

adventures. Social isolation is a real thing and 

this is a great way to connect with others in 

the local community. 

We operate on a donation basis as our 

drivers are volunteers and use their own 

vehicles, we do re-imburse them for their 

fuel costs. Last year our volunteers clocked 

up over 41,000km and served the community 

at least 2,412 hours. There is a massive 

demand on the public health system so if we

for the Giving Garden Festival, this will be 

our first major fundraiser at the prestigious 

Broadfield Garden so generously offered by 

the creator of the gardens, who will also be 

offering personalised garden tours.

This is an event to be enjoyed by the whole 

family, there will be other local 

community organisations represented, 

Rolleston Brass Band will be putting on a 

show, and a fantastic classic car display.

VEGETABLES 

Brassicas (plants of the 

cabbage family) planted in late 

December or during January will 

now need protection from white 

butterfly caterpillars and grey 

aphids. A dusting of derris dust 

once a fortnight or after rain will 

kill caterpillars. 

An alternative is to construct 

some lightweight frames and 

cover them with plastic mesh 

of the type sold to protect 

strawberries. 

The frames prevent white 

butterflies from landing on the 

plants and laying their eggs. 

Grey aphids are most 

effectively controlled by 

insecticides or by planting 

pyrethrum (Chrysanthemum 

cinerarifolium) as close as 

possible to brassicas. 

Onions are ready for harvesting 

once the leaves start turning 

brown or begin drying up. 

Pull out onions and place in a 

sunny place to dry completely. 

Store for use during winter by 

stringing in bunches or placing 

in a single layer on a wire netting 

rack in a dry, airy place where 

they get some light. 

Now's the time to plant spring-flowering bulbs. Grape hyacinths, or matchheads, 

succeed almost everywhere, increase rapidly and can be naturalised under 

deciduous plants.

FLOWERS 

Freesias, grape hyacinths 

(Muscaribotryoides and 

M.armeniacum), fritillaries and 

bulbous irises (Irisreticulata) and 

juno (I.bucharica), Dutch, Spanish 

and English types, are among 

spring-flowering bulbs to plant 

now. 

Natives of South Africa, freesias 

enjoy a warm, sunny position 

with a light soil. They give good 

results under cloches and in 

greenhouses, as well as in sunny 

parts of the garden. 

Grape hyacinths, or 

matchheads, succeed almost 

everywhere, increase rapidly 

and can be naturalised under 

deciduous plants. There are white 

and double blue forms, as well as 

several species, the latter often 

difficult to obtain. 

Bulbous irises flower over a 

long period, starting in late winter 

with the blues and purples of Iris 

reticulata. 

These irises like light, welldrained 

soil in full sunshine and 

will multiply surprisingly quickly 

if left to get on with it. 

Do not buy irises if there are 

black marks on the outside, as it 

indicates fungal disease. 

Dutch, Spanish and English 

irises, which flower in that order, 

grow from 40cm to 70cm. Colours 

vary from deep purple to light 

blue, white, yellow and golden 

brown. 

They all enjoy warm, sunny 

conditions and do best if the soil 

is kept moist but not waterlogged. 

They multiply quickly if planted 

in a suitable spot. 

Lawn clippings are useful for 

mulching under shrubs such as 

rhododendrons, azaleas, roses 

and other surface-rooting plants 

at this time of the year. 

Apply them only after the soil 

has been well watered and do not 

spread deeper than about 5cm. 

FRUIT 

Grapes will now be showing 

colour and some getting close to 

being fully ripe. An important 

task at this stage is to keep vines 

watered until the fruit is about 

half-ripe, giving liquid manure 

every week or two before 

watering. When grapes are halfcoloured, 

give no more water 

until fruit has been picked. 

Care must be taken to ensure 

grapes grown in greenhouses 

have good ventilation, especially 

once fruit has formed.
