Gliddon hints at staff cuts
to keep rates rise down
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Cuts to staffing at the council
is a possibility as councillors
grapple over how to keep the
rates rise as low as possible.
The council has come up with
a draft rise of 6% which will
take effect when the next financial
year starts in July.
But more savings will need to
be found if a lower rates rise is
to happen – and Mayor Lydia
Gliddon has hinted staff cuts
could be a possibility.
Staff costs amounted to $47.3
million last financial year.
Selwyn Times understands
staff costs were discussed by
councillors in a behind closed
doors publicly excluded meeting
last week.
Gliddon said “sensitive” matters
relating to the council
budget which will determine
the rates rise were discussed.
A figure will be determined
for a six week public consultation
starting March 16 before
the final rates rise is decided.
Gliddon said the public
excluded discussion was about
the “internals” of the council.
“At this current stage, we are
still working on some things
that have a lot of sensitivity
around them,” she said.
Asked if it related to staffing
levels, Gliddon told Selwyn Times
said “you can read between the
lines”.
“I hope in a few weeks I can
tell you a little bit more.”
Over the past three financial
years, the council has increased
staff numbers from 586 to 665,
and the number of full-time
employees from 309 to 379.
Staffing levels were a focus of
new councillor Aaron McGlinchy
during his election campaign.
In June last year McGlinchy
said: “Management and councillors
need to be asking why this
jump, and do we have the right
number and mix of staff to be
operating efficiently.”
Since being elected, he has
been made the council finance
and performance committee
chair.
McGlinchy told Selwyn Times
it was premature to discuss specifics
at the moment.
“Some of the things being
talked about there could have
effects on staff, so that’s a
sensitive issue, but the council
is not going in there blindly
slashing away at staff, but we
are aware that it is a major cost,”
he said.
2024/25 financial year
• 14 staff paid more than $201,000
• 157 staff paid between $101,000-$200,000
• 211 staff paid between $60,001-$100,000
• 283 staff paid less than $60,000
• Total amount spent on wages: $47.3 million
By the numbers
2022/23 financial year
• 5 staff paid more than $201,000
• 89 staff paid between $101,000-$200,000
• 187 staff paid between $60,001-$100,000
• 305 staff paid less than $60,000
• Total amount spent on wages: $32.7 million
Community rallies around family
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Donations have been pouring in
for the family of Alex Bennett.
The 10-year-old was tragically
killed two weeks ago after being
struck by a vehicle just outside
his Leeston Rd home while
checking the mail.
As of Monday afternoon,
$14,579 had been raised through
a Givealittle page set up to support
Alex’s family and establish
a scholarship fund in his name.
The page had received 341
donations, including $1000 from
the Springston Rams rugby
team.
The page was created by
Mary Batchelar, a parent at
Springston School, which Alex
attended.
“Alex was a beautiful, clever
beyond words, amazingly kind
boy who shared a special bond
with mine,” Batchelar said on
LinkedIn.
“He loved Minecraft and science
and talking about all sorts
of things.
“We are grieving tremendously
for the loss of his life and
for the pain and devastation his
family are feeling.”
In addition to the Givealittle
fundraiser, the community has
also donated a large amount of
groceries, vouchers and cash
through Leeston Fresh Choice.
Councillor Elizabeth Mundt,
who helped organise the donations,
said the response had
been “outstanding”.
“We got seven full banana
boxes, hundreds of dollars,
Community-donated groceries
collected at Leeston Fresh Choice for
the family of Alex Bennett, 10, who
died two weeks ago after being struck
by a vehicle.
heaps of vouchers. It is really
fantastic,” she said.
Selwyn Times reported last
week it was told the driver
of the vehicle involved was
a mother travelling with her
children.
Police said the crash remains
under investigation.
More work needed to meet rates
BY DANIEL ALVEY
More savings need to be found
if Mayor Lydia Gliddon is to
fully deliver on her election
promise of a single-digit rates
rise.
The council has set a 6% rates
increase as its starting point for
the coming year. While that figure
is technically within single
digits, once Selwyn Water Ltd
connection fees for water and
wastewater are included, the
increase rises to an effective
10.6% for the average-priced
urban household, valued at
$847,000.
“I committed to keeping rates
increases in single digits, and
we have reduced the council
rates increase to a draft 6%,
down from a projected 13.3% in
the Long Term Plan, with work
still to be done,” Gliddon said.
“We have got to start somewhere...
people want to see
where we are at.”
To reach the 6% draft
increase, the council has identified
$9.2 million in savings
and has started shifting more
services towards a user-pays
model.
The overall picture is
expected to become clearer in
the coming weeks, with Selwyn
Water close to confirming its
connection and usage charges.
Said Gliddon: “Until we get to
see those numbers, everything
is so very hypothetical.”
HAVE YOUR SAY Tell us how the council can save money to minimise the rates rise. Email your views to
barry@alliedmedia.co.nz in 200 words or less.
Gliddon said the council is
“cognisant” the household
impact is both rates and water
bills put together.
“It would be premature to
confirm a combined household
percentage until the (Selwyn
Water) validation process is
complete. I know the community
wants these numbers, and
so do we.”
The 6% draft rate rise is
expected to change before the
Annual Plan, which sets out the
council’s budget for the 2026/27
financial year, goes out for a sixweek
public consultation from
March 16.
Reaction to the 6-7% draft
increase on community social
media pages has been mixed,
with some wanting more
reduction and others supportive
of the progress made so far.
Councillors agreed at a meeting
last week that more work
was required.
Finance and performance
committee chair Aaron
McGlinchy said he wanted to see
further savings, but described
the process as a reality check
when it came to understanding
HOW THE NUMBERS ADD UP
• For an $847,000 home with
sewage, a 6% rise would see a rates
bill increase by about $209. Adding
in Selwyn Water, the total bill would
increase by about $504, excluding
how much water is used. It
represents about $114 saving from
the forecast 13.3% increase.
• For an $847,000 home with
sewage, a 4% rise would see a rates
bill increase by about $139. Adding
in Selwyn Water, the total bill would
increase by about $434, excluding
how much water is used. It
represents about $178 saving from
the forecast 13.3% increase.
Note: Selwyn Water Ltd figures are based Selwyn
Water Services Delivery Plan from July 2025
what could, and could not, be cut
without triggering a special consultative
procedure (SCP).
“It is probably better we
focus on the stuff where we can
quickly make some savings and
work through the stages to get to
a better number the community
is happy with (in the Long Term
Plan).”
A major challenge with an SCP,
along with the cost of $300,000
to $500,000, is the tight timeframe
the council has to strike
its new rates by June 30.
As it is, the council already
has limited flexibility to complete
the Annual Plan process
because of the six-week
Leeston Library awaits
The Leeston Library was closed in March last year after being found to be
unsanitary and is now marked for demolition.
BY JONATHAN LEASK
The water-damaged Leeston
Library and Service Centre
will be demolished, while the
Leeston Medical Centre will
remain in place.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon
confirmed the council made
the decision to proceed with
the demolition during the
public excluded part of last
Wednesday’s meeting.
“The library portion of the
building will be demolished,
which is where the unsanitary
building notice sits.”
The project includes the
remediation of the wall that
separates the library and
medical centre, she said.
“There will also be some
improvements to the medical
centre to enable them to carry
on.”
The council had budgeted
$1.9 million for the demolition
and remediation work in the
Long Term Plan. But this has
now been increased to $2.2m,
Gliddon said.
The project’s budget
includes asbestos removal, the
demolition and remediation of
the site.
The library and service
centre half of the building
closed in March last year
after routine roof repairs and
further assessments revealed
substantial water ingress, and it
was subsequently deemed to be
unsanitary.
The library found a
temporary home next to the
FreshChoice supermarket on
High St while it awaits the
construction of Whata Rau, the
$16m library and community
centre project.
It is scheduled to start next
year, but the project is set to
be reviewed by the council
through the annual plan.
The medical centre and
Plunket rooms remain in the
other half of the building and
Gliddon said the council is
already pushing the limits of
what can be changed this year,
with a more substantial reset
planned for the 2027-37 Long
Term Plan.
“The Annual Plan is a step
change, and the Long Term Plan
is the big reset,” she said.
The council is also looking to
hit pause on projects like the
$16m Leeston Library and Community
Centre called Whata Rau,
and the planned district park in
Rolleston.
“We are not going to throw
them out, but I think we just
need to be a little bit smarter
with what we’ve got,” Gliddon
said.
She said pausing Whata
Rau could delay construction,
currently scheduled to begin
towards the end of the year, but
stressed any decision would be
guided by community feedback.
A common question from
residents is why rates increases
cannot be kept within the current
inflation rate of 3.1%.
Gliddon said the consumer
price index, used to measure
inflation and track items such
as groceries, does not reflect the
true cost increases faced by councils
when building infrastructure.
She said infrastructure
inflation is about two-anda-half
times higher than the
household rate.
Councillor Aaron McGlinchy said it was too early for people to get the calculators
out, with Selwyn Water still to confirm its charges.
commercial precinct in the town
centre.
“We were approached by
someone asking if we wanted
to sell the community centre,”
Gliddon said.
“My role is to bring that offer
to the council table, as it’s not
for me to answer – it is the
governance team’s responsibility
to make a decision.
“What we decided is that
we need to finish our strategic
investment strategy and spatial
planning before we can even
start to consider that type of
stuff.”
Details of the purchase offer
were inadvertently released by
the council last Monday when
the agenda for the meeting was
made public.
Gliddon said the agenda
contained a more “explicit
description” than would
normally be provided.
Under the Local Government
Act, council agendas usually
outline only the general subject
matter and the reason it is being
considered behind closed doors
– such as commercial sensitivity
– along with whether the
decision will be released publicly.
For last week’s meeting, the
agenda stated that “once a
decision has been made about
the potential sale of the Rolleston
Community Centre, then
portions which do not relate to
the commercial sensitivity of the
other party will be considered
for release”.
Gliddon said the offer was
“probably a couple of years too
soon” to be considered, given the
amount of discussion, strategy
and planning still required.
“We know there is another
community centre proposed for
Rolleston in the long-term plan,
but we need to be smart about
what we do,” she said.
“In my personal view, having
two community centres is just
more operational cost.”
The long-term plan includes
$6.1 million for a new
community centre in south-west
Rolleston.
The existing community
centre has been undergoing
redevelopment and
refurbishment.
-Leask is a local body
democracy reporter co-funded by
RNZ and NZ On Air
wrecking ball but medical centre spared
will continue to operate after
the demolition of the library.
The impending demolition
had been divulged earlier
that day at the finance and
performance committee
meeting, before the council
decision to proceed with the
demolition was made later that
afternoon.
A staff report said the
“procurement of designers for
projects such as Whata Rau
and Leeston Medical Centre
demolition are currently
being planned, aiming for
engagement of these services in
February/March”.
Councillor Elizabeth Mundt
pointed out the statement's
inclusion.
Mundt asked if the decision
made on Wednesday would
take effect
immediately to
seek designers
when “Whata
Rau is coming
back to us for
the annual
plan”.
“So how’s
Elizabeth Mundt
that panning
out with the
procurement
for a designer of Whata Rau if
it’s an annual plan decision?”
Staff explained that the report
was written in early January
“before any decisions had been
made”.
“Since then, other decisions
have been made, and things
will change based on decisions
made”.
The report also highlighted
the increased $2.2m budget
and stated the demolition
of the library and site
remediation was scheduled to
take place from August to June
next year.
The Leeston Medical Centre will
remain in place.
Deputy mayor selling two
properties for the council
DANIEL ALVEY
Deputy mayor Brendan
Shefford says he is saving
ratepayers money by selling
two council-owned houses.
Shefford, who owns Ray
White Town & Lifestyle group,
is selling homes 11 and 11a
West Belt, Lincoln, which the
council has owned since 2007.
Shefford said there is no
conflict of interest because
councillors were not involved
in the competitive process
to decide which real estate
company would get the listing.
“The council
bases the listing
around fees and
commission,
the locality of
agents, experience
with the type
of property,
marketing
strategy, and
marketing cost,”
he said.
Shefford was not on the
Brendan
Shefford
council when it decided to sell
the properties.
Shefford said his company
is taking a 2% commission
excluding GST and is also
saving the council about $2300
in marketing costs. If Shefford
was selling a house for anyone
else, he said the commission
would have likely have been
2.75%.
The three-bedroom homes
have a capital value of $470,000
and $480,000 each. The council
paid $768,888 for both in 2007.
A council spokesperson
said the homes are being
sold as they are surplus to
requirements and four real
estate companies put in offers
sell them.
Sheffield School has been supplying food for the Coast to Coast for 20 years.
School helps to feed
race competitors
Deputy mayor Brendan Shefford is selling the council-owned properties at 11 and 11a West Belt in Lincoln.
DANIEL ALVEY
Meatballs with mashed potatoes
and veggie medley was the
favourite for Coast to Coast
athletes being fed by Sheffield
School.
The school has been
responsible for feeding the
competitors on Klondyke
Corner Campsite at the end
of day one of the two-day
adventure race for the past 20
years.
One of the parents organising
the catering, Lauren McIlroy,
said the money raised from the
catering will go towards a range
of areas across the school.
McIlroy said one of the
challenges behind the catering
effort is a largely off-grid
setup at the campsite, which
has several barbecues and
a generator. Adding to the
challenge was the weather.
“We were under cover but in
gumboots standing in puddles.”
McIlroy said the day started
at 6am with food being
transported from the school
to the campsite about an hour
away. During the day, the school
was also making burgers and
chips to sell before preparing
450 meals for dinner from 1pm.
McIlroy said it is a community
effort with suppliers and
parents donating food, and a
team of about 25 keeping the
operation going through the
day.
Lincoln’s new look townhouses
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Lincoln is set to get its first true
medium-density development.
The Fitzgerald Lane development
will be built within the
2100-home Earlsbrook subdivision
and will have 34 two and
three-bedroom townhouses
across a 4500sq m site.
Christchurch developer Hamish
Collins has always liked
Lincoln since he studied at Lincoln
University about 15 years
ago.
“My mum and
my auntie studied
out there as
well. I’ve always
had a soft spot
for out there, and
when these sites
came up, I saw an
opportunity,” Collins
said.
While townhouses
are a
Hamish Collins
common sight in Christchurch
and are starting to appear in
Rolleston, there have been very
few two-storey developments in
Lincoln.
In Selwyn, 24.6% of new consents
for December were for
multi-unit dwellings compared
to 80.1% in Christchurch.
“Whether we do it or someone
else does it, this is the kind of
housing that is going to be built
around centres,” Collins said.
Collins said the homes are
affordable with prices ranging
from $579,000 to $729,000 well
below the $937,500 average for
Lincoln property values.
DC Living is developing 34 townhouses in the 2100-home Earlsbrook subdivision, due to be completed by the middle of next year.
Construction is expected to be
finished by the middle of next
year, with ground work starting
in about May, once consent is
granted.
The townhouses have been on
the market for two weeks. Bayleys
agent Nathan Collett said a handful
were already under contract.
The buyers
were a mix of
Lincoln residents
downsizing, first
home buyers and
investors.
The key
to selling
townhouses,
Nathan Collett
Collett said, is being close to
amenities.
“If you just have a carpark
or a single garage in your
townhouse you want to be
able to walk to the shops, the
supermarket, and school.”
Earlsbrook will have a school
and retail centre.
In brief
Island to be added to
Prebbleton crossing
The pedestrian crossing in
Prebbleton on Springs Rd is
set for a safety upgrade with a
traffic island in the centre of the
road. The island will provide a
protected refuge point for people
crossing and allow pedestrians
to deal with one direction of
traffic at a time. The upgrade
follows advocacy from the local
community. The work is expected
to cost about $15,000 and will be
carried out in the coming months.
Harvester fire
No crop was lost after a harvester
caught fire on Levi Rd near
Rolleston last week. Rolleston
chief Marty Tier said it was lucky
the machine caught fire in a
section of the paddock which had
already been harvested.
Feedback sought on
commuter buses
Environment Canterbury is
seeking feedback on Rolleston's
extra buses to the city in the
morning and evenings. The
extra services, which have been
running for about six months, are
operated by Bentley Coachlines.
ECan councillor Joe Davies said
31,000 passenger trips were
recorded on Routes 84 and 85
over the past four months — a
30% increase compared with the
same period last year. Feedback
can be provided via a short
survey until 9am on March 5 at
ecan.govt.nz/84-85survey.
Teacher’s Struggle to Sleep
Margaret’s Fitbit tells a
remarkable story giving hope to
thousands with sleep problems.
For 35 years, Margaret
commanded classrooms of
teenagers. The retired high school
teacher who could silence a room
with a look, the woman who
marked essays until midnight and
still bounded into school by 7am.
Energy was never her problem.
“I loved those early mornings,”
she recalls. “Cup of tea, lesson
plans on the table. Sleep was
something I did well.”
But at 68, good sleep had
become a thing of the past. Like
nearly half of New Zealanders over
50, she faced nightly battles that
left her exhausted and frustrated.
“I’d dread the moment the lights
went out,” Margaret explains.
“I’d lie there for hours, tossing
and turning. Even when I did fall
asleep, I’d wake multiple times.
The mornings were the worst. I felt
like I was dragging myself to the
kettle.”
She found herself avoiding
invitations. Book club felt like too
much effort. Even phone calls with
her grandchildren left her drained.
“You start to withdraw,” she
admits. “Not because you don’t
want to see people, but because
you don’t have the energy. That’s
not who I am.”
Research shows that as we age,
our bodies produce less melatonin,
the hormone that signals sleep.
Combined with increased night
time anxiety and lighter sleep
cycles, it creates a perfect storm of
sleeplessness.
Margaret had tried everything.
Warm milk. Lavender on the
pillow and various other natural
remedies.
“Some would make me drowsy,
but I’d still wake at 2am,” she says.
“Nothing helped me stay asleep.”
Then her daughter mentioned
reading about Koru Sleep online.
“I almost didn’t bother, but she
insisted.”
She picked up a bottle from her
local pharmacy. Unlike typical
sleep aids that simply combine
magnesium with a herb or two,
this formula took a comprehensive
approach she hadn’t seen before.
“What I noticed immediately
was that it felt natural,” she recalls.
“No grogginess, no strange dreams.
Just a gentle settling.”
The retired teacher now follows
a simple routine: two capsules, 30
minutes before bed.
“Within days, my Fitbit was
showing longer stretches of deep
sleep, the kind where your body
actually repairs itself.”
“I wake up clear-headed now
instead of groggy. It’s like someone
switched the lights back on in my
life,” she laughs. “I’m reading
again, spending quality time with
friends, keeping up with things
around the garden.”
For Margaret, better sleep
has meant better days. She’s
back at book club. She calls her
grandchildren without watching
the clock.
“When you’re exhausted,
everything feels harder. Your
patience, your focus, even your
relationships suffer,” she reflects.
“Now I feel like myself again.”
Her advice? “Sleep isn’t optional
after 60. It’s how we stay present
for the people who need us.”
Possible rates rise –
readers have their say
I am writing to oppose the
proposed 6-7% rates increase for
the 2026/27 financial year.
Although I recognise the effort
to reduce the initial 13.3% projection,
a 6-7% rise remains well
above current wage growth.
Many employers are increasing
salaries by only around 3%,
and with ongoing inflation and
rising living costs, households are
already under significant financial
pressure. This level of rates
increase is especially difficult for
first-home buyers and residents
on fixed incomes.
Selwyn continues to experience
rapid development, with strong
property sales and expanding
subdivisions.
Developers are generating
substantial profits from growth
in our district. It is only fair that
stricter development contribution
policies be implemented so that
growth pays for growth.
Existing ratepayers should
not bear the primary cost of
infrastructure required for new
developments. Before increasing
rates beyond wage growth, the
council should prioritise tighter
spending controls, stronger cost
efficiencies, and greater financial
contributions from developers.
A rates increase closer to
3-4% would be more realistic
and responsible in the current
economic climate. I urge the
council to reconsider the proposed
increase and better protect
ratepayers.
- Anukishan Kaki
I’m in two minds about this.
While we don’t want our rates to
go up unnecessarily, I am interested
to see the Selwyn we end up
with if the council continue with a
more user pays model.
How do we invest in the infrastructure,
resources and social
opportunities of a growing district
if not with rates?
- Adrienne Fenton
I was hoping to see a draft rates
increase of no more than 2-3%.
After years of significant rises,
many households and businesses
in Selwyn are stretched. A
proposed increase of 6-7%, even
if lower than earlier projections,
still places real pressure on families
already juggling mortgages,
insurance, food, and energy costs.
The late Nobel Prize–winning
economist Milton Friedman often
argued that meaningful reform
begins with budget restraint. Governments
do not reform during
times of abundance; they reform
when they are forced to prioritise.
Discipline drives innovation. Scarcity
sharpens focus.
That principle echoes Ernest
Rutherford, who famously
quipped: “We have no money,
therefore we will have to think.”
With limited resources, thinking
improves. Waste reduces.
Priorities become clearer. Selwyn
is a growing district, and growth
requires infrastructure.
But growth demands careful
stewardship. Before asking
ratepayers for more, we should
exhaust every chance to rethink
spending, defer non-essential projects,
and improve efficiency.
True leadership is not about
managing increases more gently;
it is about challenging the
assumption that increases are
inevitable.
Reform begins with restraint.
I believe our mayor, councillors
and the chief executive would be
up to that task!
Cycling his
way to 35kg
weight loss
Proud to be Me is a series of stories on people living in Selwyn.
February is Bike to Work Month, and Coen Lammers speaks to Wayne
Smart about the cycling group he founded in an attempt to get fit
Wayne Smart had no idea his
Facebook post five years ago
would result in a large cycling
community who go for ride each
Sunday, and some Wednesdays
over summer.
“I posted that I wanted to get
fit and was looking for people
to go riding with. I ate too much
over Christmas and New Year
and never stopped. Sadly, it was
Christmas 2001,” he wrote in January
2021.
The post attracted dozens of
comments, and before long the
inaugural group was on the road
to Lincoln.
“Initially, I could just do 20km.
My first ride was to Lincoln and
back and when I got home I fell
asleep on the couch and could
hardly walk the rest of the day,”
said Smart, who lives in Rolleston.
Pedal Pushers is now an established,
but very casual, social
group of cyclists of all abilities,
named after the restaurant
where members meet each Sunday,
before riding around the
district.
After that initial gut-busting
ride, Smart persevered and has
since lost about 35kg through
cycling and other exercise.
He said cycling was the perfect
way to start getting fit because of
the low impact on the joints.
“Once I got a bit fitter I could
try other things as well, like
swimming and fitness boot
camps.”
Pedal Pushers includes riders
of varying ages and abilities, but
the group adapts its pace so everyone
can keep up.
“We go out for 40-80km rides
on a Sunday and for people like
me it is the main ride of the
week, while for others it is a
recovery ride from bigger rides
Since founding the Pedal Pushers group in 2001, Wayne Smart has managed to lose 35kg through cycling and other exercise.
they also do,” said Smart, who
considers himself one of the
slower riders in the group.
“But the stronger riders help
out the others, so when they see
that you are getting a bit tired,
they take the lead into the wind,
so others can take a breather in
their slipstream.”
From that initial Facebook
post, more than 40 riders are
now part of Pedal Pushers.
Cyclists dip in and out depending
on other commitments, injuries
and the weather forecast, so the
size of the peloton varies from
week to week.
“Last week we had 19 riders in
the bunch, which was the biggest
group we ever had on the road,”
Smart said.
Aside from battling the bulge,
Smart, a former police officer,
enjoys the social side of the
group.
“That’s what I enjoy the most,
so the coffee along the way is
as important to me as the ride
itself.”
After 13 years in the police,
Smart left and began working in
the insurance industry.
“My two children are now
working within the police force
and they are loving it.”
Smart said the long, straight
roads in Selwyn are ideal for
cycling.
“We tend to pick the backroads
and stay away from the busy
stretches to avoid traffic.”
He credits Murray Amtman
and David Lewes as the driving
force behind the group, often
choosing routes and managing
communications.
Aware cyclists can sometimes
have a poor reputation among
motorists, Smart said safety is a
key focus for the group.
“We only ride two abreast, but
when we hear cars, we slot into
single file. In a large group though
it is often safer to ride two abreast
and easier for cars to pass than a
string of single cyclists.
“It doesn’t matter how unfit
you are, you just need to start
– even just a ride around the
block. You may be surprised how
quickly you will be able to do
longer stretches.”
SPORT
Injury frustrations but promise
Another frustrating setback has
curtailed the season for Darfield
cricketer Cameron Paul, but his
long-term focus remains intact.
Sam Coughlan reports
How frustrating is it to be sidelined
with injury again?
It is frustrating. At the start of
the season I had an ankle injury
that ruled me out of the first
block of Ford Trophy (50-over)
games and the first three games
of red-ball.
I managed to get back for the
last red-ball game and the T20s
and then got injured in one of
the games before the finals, so it
was pretty tough.
It’s never easy with injuries,
and sadly with pace bowling,
they pop up quite a lot.
What’s the latest complaint?
I’ve torn my abdominal,
basically. I was just bowling in
a game against Wellington at
Hagley Oval – I did it during
that game, and then bowled
another over on it and batted.
The next day it was no good.
What is the timeframe on your
recovery?
It’s most likely I’m out for
the whole season, just with the
timing of it. Even if I get back
(before the end of the season),
you’ve then got to do your
bowling loads to get them up
for red-ball cricket, which can
take a month in itself, so it’s a
Cameron Paul has played 16 times for Canterbury since his debut in 2023, and has 31 wickets in his domestic career.
PHOTOS: THOMAS BIRD
really tricky time to get injured.
I’m hoping that because
I’m an all-rounder I’ll end up
playing quite a bit of country
cricket, A cricket, and club
cricket (for Darfield) towards
the end of the season, just as a
batsman.
Have injuries been a regular
problem?
A few years ago I missed the
under 19 World Cup after a
shoulder dislocation, which I
ended up having to get surgery
for. It just comes with the
territory sadly – sometimes you
have a bit of bad luck and it
can take you out for the whole
season.
What is your plan for the winter?
I was looking at going to the
UK to play some club cricket, I
think that might change now.
Name: Cameron Paul
Age: 21
Role: Fast-bowling all-rounder
Canterbury caps: 16
Wickets: 31
Best bowling: 5/34 v Central Districts
Major: Finance, at Canterbury
University
Last year I went to Brisbane
for a T20 league, which was
good, so I might head over and
do that again. Otherwise I’ll
probably spend most of the
winter in the gym, hopefully
build a really good base for
next season.
What about away from cricket?
I’m studying finance at UC,
I’ve had to do it sort of parttime
since I’ve started so it has
made it a little tricky.
It’ll take me a few more years
than it takes most people, but
I’m just trying to keep it moving
and enjoy it while I do it.
Is it tricky to juggle your studies
with cricketing commitments?
Yeah it is, it’s really tricky.
I’m someone who struggles to
switch easily. With the nature of
our schedule it’s hard to know
what even your next week looks
like with selection.
UC is really tough with doing
distance learning, so it is tricky,
but there’s a lot of value in
doing it. There are always
windows (of time) where you
can give it your best.
remains for all-rounder on the rise
Do you set goals for yourself on the
field?
I’ve always been that way, I
think. I was lucky to go through
quite a few schools that had
good sports coaches.
I went to Cobham Intermediate
and there was a teacher
there who ran a class with me
two or three days a week during
lunchtimes to learn about different
athletes and mental skills.
Then in high school, I always
had a real competitive drive. I
suppose goals just come from
being really competitive, and
also setting a standard for
yourself you think you can live
up to.
What sort of goals do you set now?
As I’ve got older, I’ve drifted
away from setting a goal like
how many runs or how many
wickets you’re wanting to get
in the season, because that’s
out of your control a lot of the
time. I try to set goals that are
well within my control, around
training or preparation.
Like any player, you want
to play for New Zealand and
at that top level. There are
opportunities nowadays with
the IPL and stuff like that, but I
think you want to just reach the
pinnacle of the game and do that
for as long as you can.
What are some of your standout
memories on the cricket field?
I went to Darwin a few years
ago and got to captain the under
19 New Zealand side, which was
Paul has played 16 times for Canterbury since his debut in 2023, and has taken 31 wickets in his domestic career.
pretty cool. I had family come
over as well, which was quite
special.
My red-ball debut (for
Canterbury) was special too. I
felt the weight of it a little bit
more than the others and I
managed to get a wicket first
ball.
It was in Nelson and my
mum came up for it. I ended
up getting five wickets and I
saw her running around the
boundary to get a photo while
she’s in tears.
I’ve also been lucky enough
to be a part of some really cool
four-day wins, and of course,
“As I've got older, I've
drifted away from
setting a goal like how
many runs or how many
wickets you're wanting
to get in the season,
because that's out of
your control a lot of the
time.”
Cameron Paul
I’ve been part of two campaigns
where we’ve won the Ford
Trophy – you can’t beat them
really.
And the tough moments?
With cricket, you tend to get
a lot more of those. With the
shoulder injury, it was the first
week of under 19 nationals, I
dived on the block, I’d never
done a shoulder before, but I
dislocated it.
I had to go back the next day
after getting all the scans and tell
the New Zealand coaches I was
getting surgery and I couldn’t
play at the World Cup.
That was really tough, and at
that age you think it’s the end of
the world, right? It was a rough
moment, and eight months of
really hard work. But I think that
work paid off, and I managed to
have a long season the next one.
SPORT
Selwyn Utd return to top-tier after UC withdrawal
SAM COUGHLAN
Selwyn United are back in the Southern
League.
Five months after a 5–2 loss to Nelson
Suburbs in their final match left
them bottom of the table and relegated
to the second-tier Canterbury Premiership,
the club’s top-flight status has been
reinstated following the withdrawal of
Universities from the competition due to
a lack of a qualified coach.
Head coach and director of football
Chris Brown said it had been a “crazy
rush” trying to get things in order to formalise
the move up.
“We’re just happy to be back in, to be
honest.
“The club got told just before the email
went out (last week) to say UC have
dropped out. We received information to
say, ‘an option is there, would you be in
a position to go back?’
“We spoke about it as a club and
everybody agreed, yeah, let’s go back,”
Brown said.
Selwyn United have competed in the
Southern League since the national
competition format changed to its
current model in 2021, achieving their
best-ever finish – second place – in that
inaugural season.
The promotion also means Selwyn’s
reserve team will now move up from
the third-tier championship into the
premiership.
Despite being relegated last year, Selwyn United
were invited to rejoin the Southern League this
year after Universities withdrew.
PHOTO: HARRY LEWES PHOTOGRAPHY
Brown said the late change of plans had
truncated the club’s pre-season, but it
was a sacrifice they were willing to make.
“If we were in the premiership, we
would have been starting (the season) in
the beginning of April, and now it has been
moved to March 22.
“A few plans have changed, but you’d
rather change those plans than not. We’re
just happy to go up and we’ll give it the best
we’ve got.
“I know the players are keen to write a
few wrongs from last year as well, so we’ve
got the opportunity to do that,” he said.
Selwyn played their first pre-season
game at the weekend, an internal match
against their reserve side, and will also take
part in a pre-season tournament hosted
by Ferrymead Bays before the campaign
begins. They were set to play Cashmere
Technical last night.
WHALAN AND PARTNERS LTD, BAYLEYS, LICENSED UNDER THE REA ACT 2008
With one trophy already in the bank this
season, Weedons player-coach Jeremy
Benton is hungry for more.
His side clinched the T20 title on
Sunday with a 25-run win over Darfield
in the final, with Benton’s 38 the top
score.
“I’ve been drilling into all the lads that,
in your whole premier club career, you
might only play a few finals and you win
even less trophies,” he said.
“Make sure you
cherish it.”
Canterbury batter
Harry Chamberlain
got Weedons off to the
perfect start, striking
35 from just 14 balls as
Weedons reached 153/7.
Left-arm seamer
Ed Nuttall took three
wickets, while Benton Jeremy Benton
and Taylor Holland
picked up two apiece, as Darfield were
dismissed for 128 in reply. The result
secured Weedons their third T20 title in
the past four years.
Weedons held on to first place in the
one-day standings on Saturday, despite a
setback against Peninsula-Harbour.
Restricted to 105/9 from 45 overs, they
watched the visitors chase down the
target with five wickets in hand.
“It was always tough because we had
the final on Sunday, and no matter what
you tell the lads they’ve always got one
eye on the Sunday,” Benton said.
Weedons sit six points clear of
Darfield, although the latter have a
game in hand. The two sides meet in two
weeks’ time, with the winner likely to
secure top spot heading into the finals.
This weekend, Weedons play Oxford
away, Darfield visit Ohoka, and
Peninsula-Harbour face Sefton.
Matches start at 12.30pm.

RURAL LIFE
The forecast is… smokey
ISABELLE TERESA
Canterbury has been in open fire
season for three weeks now – earlier
than usual, but we all remember that wet
January… Open fire season means that
fires can be lit without a permit, as long
as people use common sense and follow
the fire safety guidelines on
www.checkitsalright.nz.
The presence of fires is something
all rural residents will be seeing – and
smelling – a lot more of in the coming
weeks. That’s because it’s also the season
for land burnoffs, aka stubble burns or
crop residue burns. Land burnoffs to
clear unwanted crop, scrub or vegetation
are a common land management tool
across Selwyn. The burn can be used
to prepare for different land use, for
pest and disease control or for safety,
by widening a firebreak. Fire and
Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) advises
that late summer to early autumn is the
best time of year to carry this out.
FENZ provides a detailed guide on crop
residue burning, and a useful 5-minute
video called “How to safely burn crop
residue”, which has been watched
thousands of times – search FENZ or
YouTube to find it.
Smoke is visible across a long distance,
beyond the properties of your immediate
neighbours, and even more so if you’re
on the Canterbury Plains. Farmers
carrying out a crop residue burn are
legally required to create a Smoke
Management Plan and have it available
to show to FENZ and Environment
Canterbury (ECan) staff on request. ECan
provides a simple template for this.
Even in open fire season, it’s extremely
likely that people who see smoke
drifting towards roads, buildings or
other sensitive environments will
become alarmed and call 111. So any
proactive advance communication you
can do, such as telling your neighbours,
displayed “Controlled burn” signage
(your local fire station may have some
available to loan) and doing a quick post
on your local social media pages will go
a long way to alleviating unnecessary
concern, and take the pressure off those
life-saving phone lines.
Fire season notifications can change at
any time, so always visit checkitsalright.
nz before you light, to check whether you
can burn in your area and whether you’ll
need a permit.
If you’re a local concerned about
people or property, call 111. However
if the smoke or ash is more of a
nuisance than a danger, call ECan’s
24-hour line 0800 329 276, or use the
HOME PROFESSIONALS
Are your eaves ready for leaves?
Autumn is nearly upon us, but there’s
still time to protect your eaves and
guttering from autumn leaves. Gumleaf
Gutter Guard is the perfect solution,
and it’s so quick and easy to install that
you can even do it yourself! Or get the
professionals to do it, and it’s a quick,
simple job.
If leaves get clogged in your guttering,
they will work their way into your
spouting and down pipes. This can
do significant damage to your costly
spouting, due to the acidity of the leaf
litter. Worse, if the spouting and down
pipes become blocked, flooding into the
eaves and soffit (overhanging section of
roof), and from there, into the house, is a
common – and costly – consequence.
Local company Gumleaf Gutter Guard
is well known across the region for its
innovative yet simple gutter guards that
protect your spouting, eaves and house.
The guards keep out everything from leaf
litter to hail to snow to nesting birds and
even rats.
Company owner Rohan Rudd sums
BEFORE
AFTER
up the benefits by stating: “By having
Gumleaf Gutter Guard installed, the life
of the spouting is extended to the life of
the roof.”
Materials and advice are available for
both trade customers and DIY. Rohan
says the gutter guard is 100% DIYfriendly:
“As long as you have a head
for heights, installing Gumleaf gutter
guarding is as easy as A B C – made
even easier with the guidance of our
instructional PDFs and YouTube videos
on our website.”
Much of Gumleaf’s work had already
been coming from repeat business,
customers being happy with both
the product quality and the service.
Customers requesting a quote receive it
within 24 hours, and Rohan says he will
“go anywhere to provide a quote”.
Gumleaf has partnered with Alps
Continuous Spouting to provide a
comprehensive service for all your
spouting needs. This means that you can
now access a coordinated design and
install of any aspect of quality spouting
and guttering, Gumleaf gutterguarding,
fascia, downpipes and any other weather
protection that you may need, with
professional installation to ensure a
great looking finish.
Autumn is nearly upon us, so act now,
HOME PROFESSIONALS
Cebelio: innovation and expertise in plastics
From residential to commercial to
industrial, Cebelio has specialised in
plastics for nearly 20 years, and is
conveniently based in Wigram for all
your plastic-related needs.
Smart, sustainable home decking and
fencing
The future of home decking and
fencing is here. Cebelio offers innovative,
eco-friendly, 100% recycled alternatives
to hardwood timber products, in a range
of attractive colours to suit any home.
Whether you choose Futurewood
composite fencing, or Eco-decking – or
both! – you will benefit from the userfriendly
properties of these recycled
products. They are quick to install,
using normal woodworking tools, with
no oiling, staining or painting needed.
They are low-maintenance, waterproof,
and will not rot, splinter or lose their
colour. Most of all, they are far more
longlasting than traditional decking and
fencing materials, and look immaculate
for years. Enjoy all these benefits, while
adding longterm value to your property!
Professional services: cutting,
fabrication, engraving
Cebelio has deliberately built the
inhouse expertise to deliver your job
from design to completion. It stocks a
huge range of acrylics, polycarbonates,
polyethylenes and more. Cebelio can
cut, engrave and fabricate these into
whatever you need. From a homeowner
needing a bespoke pet door, to helping
a commercial partner achieve precisely
engineered parts, Cebelio can deliver the
complete project to your door.
Sustainability at its heart
Three years ago, Cebelio moved out
of crowded, traffic-bound Woolston to
establish its current purpose-built facility
in Wigram, deliberately situated to be
easily accessible to both Christchurch
and Selwyn customers.
The facility integrates state-of-theart
plastics and waste management.
Extraction equipment for the cutting
machines is purpose built. The
wastewater catchment tank installed
under the carpark takes care of any
micro-waste and sediment issues.
Cebelio’s excellent recycling partners
assist by transforming the remnants to
new and exciting uses.
Co-owners Glenn and Barry extend
the same level of care to their small,
happy and dedicated team of around 12
people, many of whom have worked with
the company for years. A top priority in
setting up the new location was to create
the attractive outdoor living showroom
– constructed using Futurewood
fencing and Eco-decking. Surrounded
by beautiful native plantings, this is an
attractive, relaxing space for staff to
use, and for customers to experience
the colours, textures and quality of the
products on offer.
Maximising your pool beyond Summer
Summer’s nearly over – officially –
but your pool life doesn’t have to be!
Swimart is here to help you enjoy your
pool for as long you want. Here’s how.
Water testing
Chances are your pool has had high
use over Summer, not to mention extra
doses of sunscreen. So it’s important to
keep up the pool water testing regime
to not only protect your pool equipment
from unwanted corrosion and damage
but also to ensure the pool water
remains clean, healthy and welcoming.
Did you know: You can bring a sample of
your pool water to our Rolleston store for
a comprehensive computerised test. This
will show whether your pool needs its
pH, calcium hardness and total alkalinity
levels adjusted. One of our friendly
Swimart consultants will explain the
results, advise the best course of action
and recommend the right products.
While you’re there, pick up some Water
Testing Strips to use at home.
Bring the heat
It’s not just your lounge that
deserves a heatpump. By installing a
pool heatpump, you can extend your
pool use to any time of day or season.
Swimart offers a wide range of pool
heatpumps with features such as precise
temperature control, energy saving
modes, quiet operation and wifi control.
Whether it’s for early morning swims
or evening dips, you can keep up your
health and relaxation routine far beyond
summer.
Did you know: Buy a selected heatpump
before 31 March and receive a robotic
pool cleaner for free! See website for
details.
Keep the heat
Whether for spa or pool, using a cover
is the most practical way to keep in that
precious heat. The cover will also help
keep the water sparkling clean, extend
the effectiveness of the chemicals, and
significantly reduce evaporation.
Cleaniness and safety
Keeping your pool surfaces clean not
only makes your pool look inviting, but
can reduce the cost of chemicals to keep
the pool water balanced and healthy. Ask
about our range of robotic pool cleaners
to make this easy for you. And continue
to monitor the poolside area, keeping
it tidy and clean to avoid trip and slip
hazards.
As New Zealand’s number one
pool care company, Swimart is the
trusted name in swimming pool
accessories, repairs, maintenance,
Focus on spring bulbs and maintenance
Expert advice on what to do for
your garden this week
VEGETABLES
Garden maintenance is very
important at this time of the
year.
Hoe regularly between rows
to control weeds and maintain a
good texture (tilth) of the soil.
Small weeds can be left on
the ground but any with flower
heads should be put in the compost
bin as many will make a
last-ditch attempt and produce
seeds on severed stems.
Clear away remnants of cabbages,
lettuces and other crops.
Left in the ground, stems keep
drawing nourishment from the
soil, which is wasteful, but in
the compost bin add an important
green element.
Broccoli, which can take up to
four months from planting out
to maturity, can be sown now
for late winter and spring use.
Spinach, turnips and onions
can be sown.
Brown onions generally do
better in the South if sown in
autumn then left to stand over
the winter.
Perfect Keeper and Pukekohe
Long Keeper are recommended
varieties.
When thinned in October,
discards can be used like spring
onions.
Late-sown beetroot, carrots
and turnips will need thinning.
Leeks need to be kept thoroughly
watered.
If rotted poultry manure is
mulched around the plants first,
liquid manure will be created,
acting as a stimulant.
However, this does tend to
attract flies.
A light sprinkling of salt on
sandy soils will also stimulate
growth but, as always, salt
Sewing flowers like Iceland poppies now will ensure blooms for next summer.
Hoe regularly between vegetable garden rows to control weeds and maintain a good soil texture (tilth).
should be treated with some
caution.
Excessive potash fertiliser can
increase the salt content in soil,
so if in doubt, leave it out.
Parsley sown now should
be ready for spring and next
summer. Soaking the seed for a
few hours in warm water will
help germination. As seedlings
appear, thin them ruthlessly to
prevent overcrowding.
Keep making small sowings
of mesclun mix for salads and
Oriental vegetables, such as pak
choi and tatsoi, for stir-fries to
ensure a regular supply.
Mesclun mixes, which are
eaten at the leaf stage, include
up to eight vegetables and are
ideal for small households that
find full-grown lettuces too big.
Rhubarb flower stems must
be removed to prevent them
sapping the strength of the
plants.
The same is true of sea kale,
another perennial vegetable
that is making a comeback.
Unless they are being saved
for seed, trim seed heads from
herbs such as sage, parsley and
thyme.
PHOTOS: GETTY
FLOWERS
Plan now for next summer's
flowers by sowing alyssum,
Iceland poppies, cornflower,
larkspur, Scabious, Antirrhinum
and Clarkia.
Sow in well-prepared,
permanent positions, thin to
a few centimetres apart when
seedlings appear and look
forward to a fine show between
spring-flowering bulbs and the
later summer annuals.
Carnations can be increased by
layering, a good way of getting
more plants of your favourite
colours.
Layering is a method by which
new roots are developed before a
cutting is removed from a plant,
so the shock of transplanting is
reduced.
Ground layering is done by
bringing a stem down to soil
level and holding it in place with
a wire loop or heavy stone.
Before putting the stem in
position, make a cut about 1cm
long and a third of the way
through the stem.
The soil under and over the cut
stem should be rich, with some
fine gravel added.
Patience is the secret of success
with layering, especially if shrubs
such as rhododendrons are layered,
as they can take a year or
more to form good root systems.
Spring bulbs will be appearing
in garden centres, so buy early to
get the best selection.
Daffodils should be the first to
go into the ground.
Any bulbs that have been in
the same spot for three or more
years may need to be lifted,
divided and replanted in replenished
soil.
Compost dug in well and bone
dust added helps.
Although the usual advice is to
plant bulbs in twice their depth
of soil, in fact soil type should be
the guide.
In light, sandy soil, plant bulbs
at three times their depth and
half that in heavier ground.
Tulips like lime in the soil,
whereas daffodils prefer a
slightly acid soil.
FRUIT
Strawberries should be flowering
now for their second crop
next month.
Although the autumn crop is
generally smaller, these berries
are often the best-flavoured as
they have a higher sugar content.
Old varieties, unsuitable for
commercial growers because the
fruit is too soft to travel well, can
be sought out by gardeners more
interested in taste than size.
Strawberries should be almost ready to
produce a second, autumn crop.
Are you ready to grow?
Landscaping and house design go together
When looking at house designs, think
about outdoor living and how the home
will sit on your chosen section, along
with the practicality of indoor/outdoor
flow for you and your family.
Often landscaping is down the list and
while we may note where sliders are on
a house plan we may think no further,
yet planning helps ensure there is really
functional outdoor space.
If gardening is not your thing, your
landscaping may no more than one or
two patio areas, a few plants in pots then
lawn with some trees and shrubs. For
those who like gardening, positioning of
garden beds will also be a factor.
Sub-divisions usually have covenants
requiring that a house and landscape
plan (of any area visible to the street)
is submitted for approval, before
construction of the home begins.
Identifying plant species on this plan
may not be necessary with just an
indication of number of plants along
with their heights and widths needed.
A landscape designer may provide you
with plant details or you might consult
a nursery who will recommend suitable
plants.
Minimalism is currently fashionable
with grouping of evergreen shrubs
and in larger spaces one or two trees
to create effect. Natives are popular
but consider also Rhododendrons and
Camellias that while being slower
growers, do put on a stunning display of
colour in spring.
If you want a little more interest in
your garden, you might include a water
feature, pergola or additional fencing
within the property itself. The latter two
have the added advantage of providing
shelter from wind and sun. Look at how
the dimensions of each house plan fits
within your chosen piece of dirt, to see
where such features might be positioned
and whether it is workable.
Planning your outdoor space early will
also mean that you can have any prewiring
for outside lighting undertaken
by the electrician when the house is
constructed, saving dollars and making it
easier as the cables will be laid at a safe
depth (a legal requirement) and ready
for the later construction.
In relation to hard surfaces, while
driveways, paths and concrete patios are
regularly planned as part of the build,
other outdoor concrete areas may not
be considered. If you do have an idea of
additional parking areas to be concreted
for a caravan or boat or other hard
surfaces you would like, it may save on
the budget by having this completed
when the workmen are on the job rather
than them having to come back at some
point in the future. It also gets these jobs
done.
While the budget may be a factor
in determining how many of your
landscaping ideas are put into practice
at the time of the build, having a plan
in mind and costing for it is a good idea.
It could save dollars down the track
so talk to your builder, electrician and
landscape designer. You may also like
to put some ideas down on paper as a
starting point.
8
Wait until you are in
With the house design chosen and
build underway, it is really tempting to
start choosing brand new furniture for
your new home, placing items on order
before moving in.
Holding off until you are in is a really
good idea.
Often older furniture can look tired
in the setting of a brand new home yet
choosing new items before you are in
and have a true appreciation of the
spatial elements of the home, can be a
mistake.
For starters, you might not have the
budget right at the end of the build
for splashing out on new lounge and
bedroom suites or other pieces for the
home. Secondly, there can be surprises
as to what will work and what definitely
needs to go on TradeMe or taken to the
local op shop.
The old chest or armchair which
has been in the family for 100 years
may look great in the new house once
reconditioned with new stain or paint
then re-upholstered. Tired old chairs,
settees or ottomans can come to life
when restored, providing a comfy seat
in the bedroom or another corner of
the house while also bringing a touch of
colour to an otherwise neutrally toned
décor. Bright paint and stencilling can
also be used to add vibrancy to furniture
for a child’s room.
Furnishing items may be given
a totally different purpose, adding
character to a hallway or bedroom.
A variety of objects can suffice as
bedside cabinets created from stools,
drums or old suitcases once destined
for the dump or Sallies. Cushions and
throws will also spice up a bed and take
away from the nudity of a room that still
needs a little more furniture.
Fun wall hangings might be created by
covering a purchased canvas with some
bright and attractive fabric. You could
also create your own artwork or let the
children exhibit theirs. Bedheads might
be made by covering plywood with
Dacron and fabric while the odd feature
wall will add a more homely feel.
There are many great ways to spice up
a home and reduce the costs when funds
are tight after a build, and landscaping
expenses might be a priority.
Holding off will give you time to
decide on the furnishings that will work
best in the home in terms of look and
functionality. There is also the added
pleasure associated with acquiring
furniture and furnishings over time,
rather than having the retail satiation
fix all in one hit.
Property Market Update
with One Agency Real Estate Specialists
Thinking about buying, selling,
or renting in Selwyn?
23
The New Year often brings new resolutions, and as
holiday memories fade, many people are considering
whether to buy or sell their property or move into a
rental. Understanding current real estate market trends
can be crucial to making that decision and to where you
head in 2026.
Angela Hunt, of One Agency Real Estate Specialists,
advises that in the Selwyn district, strong sales have led
to a decrease in the average days on the market, now
at 30 days, down from 40 days during the same period
last year. There have been strong attendance numbers
at open homes in early January, with many active outof-town
buyers looking to relocate. This appears to be a
continuing trend in the area, as affordability and lifestyle
are key factors in relocating to Selwyn.
However, Angela notes that the spring market boom
has been less robust than in recent years, with lower
stock levels. She confirmed that there are approximately
80-100 fewer properties on the market in Rolleston
now, versus a year ago in January 2025. With less
existing stock on the market, this contributes to higher
viewership and increased competition for properties.
When looking at the overall number of new real estate
listings in the Selwyn District, according to Infometrics,
“Listings increased by 19% in the year to September
2024-2025, compared to 2023-2024. Growth overall was
higher than in New Zealand (3.3%), and there were an
average of 2,421 new real estate listings in the Selwyn
District in the 12 months ending September 2025.”
However, Angela suggests this growth is likely due to
the availability of new sections and new-build housing,
rather than existing houses.
REINZ data confirms that the median sales price in
the district has increased by $10,000 compared to the
previous year. According to Infometrics, the average
house value in the Selwyn District was $798,749 in
September 2025, compared with a nationwide average of
$867,243.
According to the Infometrics Regional Economic
Profile, the average residential rent in the Selwyn District
was $594 in 2025. However, certain areas within Selwyn
have higher rental rates. In Rolleston, for instance, the
median rental price is $630 per week, with an average
of 19 days to secure a rental. Meanwhile, Lincoln has a
median rental price of $660 per week, with an average of
21 days to rent a property.
For those considering buying, selling, or renting, it is
important to stay informed about current trends and
regional statistics to make smart real estate decisions in
2026.
