Picking up the pieces
BY KEES CHALMERS
Down but not out, staff and
community members rallied to
clean up the devastating flood
damage at the Little River Café.
More than 10 residents
arrived with tools and shovels
yesterday morning to help
clear mud from the floodstricken
café.
Owner Cameron Gordon
said the support had been a
silver lining after what had
been a “soul destroying”
day-and-a-half.
Gordon also owns restaurant
The One Next Door which was
also flooded to a lesser extent,
and will not open this weekend.
He has not
yet been inside
the restaurant
to assess any
damage.
Gordon’s
Airbnb has
also been
affected, with
four bookings
cancelled over
the next two
weeks while
repairs are carried out.
Cameron
Gordon
When the clean-up began, staff
and volunteers were standing in
about three inches of mud and
filth. Gordon said water levels
inside the café reached about 12
inches at the peak of the flooding.
“The walls are pretty badly
sodden and damaged from the
water, we’ll have a few fridges
and freezers that are no longer
working,” he said.
“All the food in the chiller has
been thrown away – it got contaminated.
There’s thousands of
dollars worth of orders in there
that have been tossed, which is
pretty gruelling.”
Gordon said the full extent of
the damage was unclear while
mud was being shovelled out.
He has owned the café for 20
years and experienced five floods
during that time, but said Tuesday’s
event was by far the worst.
The café will remain closed for at
least another day.
Tuesday’s flooding at the Little River
Campground destroyed bridges, cutting
off access to tent sites and caused
significant damage to the driveway.
“It’s awful, it’s a beautiful day
here, we should be busy, we
should be taking a lot of money
and instead we’re throwing
stuff out,” he said.
“It’s pretty soul destroying to
be honest.”
Nearby, Little River Campground
owner Marcus
Puentener described the past
24 hours as disheartening, disappointing
and daunting.
“It’s sort of like, where do
you start?” he said.
“Just one small job at a time –
that’s how we tackle it, it’s one
day at a time.”
The flood destroyed the
campground’s two foot bridges
which has cut off access to tent
sites and a 5ha native habitat.
It also caused major damage to
the campground’s driveway.
Historic club meets to reshape
BY KEES CHALMERS
The 154-year-old Lyttelton Club
will decide whether to remain a
member of Clubs NZ at a special
meeting on Sunday.
Members will also review a
proposed draft constitution,
possibly vote on a new
committee and decide whether
to continue its membership as a
club without a premises.
Clubs NZ chief executive
officer Lucy Waterreus said
she was aware
of discussions at
the Lyttelton Club
about leaving the
association, but
did not know a
meeting had been
set.
The cost of
being a member
of Clubs NZ is Lucy Waterreus
$4.50 plus GST per
financial member of the club.
As of the 2025 financial year,
Lyttelton Club had about 650
members.
Waterreus said the
association provides advocacy
for its members at a local and
central government level,
as well as connecting clubs
across the country and allows
members to visit other member
clubs while travelling.
The club leased its building
on Dublin St to the Armadillos
restaurant chain in August
following financial troubles.
The meeting will be held there
at 1pm.
Lyttelton Club governance
The Lyttelton Club leased its building on Dublin St to the Armadillos restaurant chain in August following financial troubles.
group member Steve Gallop said
at the time, a “declining and ageing
membership” meant leasing
the building to the South Island
hospitality chain was the best
financial option.
Armadillos Lyttelton venue
manager Zac Adams said the
club does not use the premises
and does not have a club night.
Gallop, Mark Hughes and
Dwayne Pool make up the club’s
current governance group.
An email sent to members
said they are happy to continue
in their current roles, looking
after building maintenance for
the tenant and ensuring it is
brought up to code.
Gallop declined
to comment
about the meeting
or what its
membership is
now.
A meeting was
held in March last
year to discuss
future options for Steve Gallop
the club after the
governance group said it lacked
enough support from members
and could not remain open.
However, after it was revealed
in February the club planned to
close, an email was sent out to
members.
Governance group member
Dwayne Pool said the original
email “said nothing about the
club closing or being in financial
difficulty” and claimed the media
misrepresented the situation.
The email did state the club
would be weighing up options,
but “either way, the Lyttelton Club
will close”.
Leasing was a proposed option
in the March meeting along with
a full sale or turning the building
into a community centre.
It is not the first time the club
has experienced financial woes.
It came close to shutting in
December 2022 due to pandemicrelated
pressures and insurance
issues.
Shed fire in Port Levy
A tractor battery change sparked
a shed fire in Port Levy on Friday.
Diamond Harbour Volunteer Fire
Brigade was called about 11.30am
and arrived shortly after noon to
find the shed fully engulfed. Chief
Frank Watson said sparks during
the battery swap were the likely
cause. The farmer escaped safely
and crews extinguished the blaze
after about 90 minutes, though the
shed was destroyed.
Coastguard rescues
Two boogie boarders were rescued
from heavy surf at Scarborough
Beach on Monday. Coastguard
Sumner launched its HamiltonJet
Rescue vessel at 6.31pm and
brought them ashore safely.
Minutes later, the vessel was
redeployed to assist a surfer in
difficulty, who was recovered and
given treatment at the Sumner base.
Draft plan consultation
Consultation opened on Monday
for Te Pataka o Rakaihautu Banks
Peninsula Community Board’s draft
plan for 2026-28. The plan sets
out the board’s vision and priorities
during its term. The board’s
priorities are delivering fit for
purpose community facilities and
toilets, strengthening village plans
and infrastructure, improving flood
resilience, supporting communities
to be resilient, supporting older
and young people and sustainable
tourism. Submissions close on
March 8, with submitters able to
speak to the board on May 4 before
final consideration of feedback.
World Cup Fever
A Footballing Journey in Nine Tournaments By Simon Kuper
The football World Cup is the biggest sporting
competition on Earth - a chance every four years
for the greatest players to win international
glory, and a month-long media spectacle that’s
watched by an audience of billions. But the
tournament has changed beyond recognition
since the inaugural event in Montevideo, Uruguay,
in July 1930. What was once a semi-professional
meeting beset by haphazard play has evolved
to become a game of multinational buyouts,
dubious ethics and questionable aims. Simon
Kuper is among the vanishingly small number of
writers who have attended every World Cup since
1990. World Cup Fever is his journey to find the
heart of football, through the nine tournaments
he’s experienced first-hand - from watching
matches in half-empty stands during Italia 90, a
tournament that at times felt like a village fete, to
witnessing the French triumph at home in 1998.
Told on the pitch and in the stands, and in the
pubs, front rooms and on the streets, this is the
story of how football has changed the world.
The Watchmaker’s War
By Danny Ben-Moshe
A compelling historical novel of revenge and
justice, based on the true story of Nazi hunters
in Australia. A new beginning. An old enemy. A
perilous choice. When Yakov Holtzman arrives in
Melbourne - about as far away as he can possibly
get from the graveyard that is Europe - he puts
behind him the years he spent in the forests of
Lithuania as a leader of the resistance, fighting
the Nazis. He has come to join his brother - his
only surviving family member - and start a new
life as the watchmaker he once was. Yakov looks
for solace - and love - in the fragile, traumatised
community of Jewish refugees taking root in
a new land. But when swastikas, threats and,
most frightening of all, the faces of old enemies
appear on the streets of suburban St Kilda, his
new-found peace is shattered. It offers profound
insights into the lingering trauma of genocide,
posing difficult questions about competing
desires for peace and vengeance, and how far
a victim should go in the pursuit of justice when
the authorities fail to act.
The Love Letter
by Lucinda Riley
Scandal. Love. Murder. When Sir James
Harrison, one of the greatest actors of his
generation, passes away at the age of ninetyfive,
he leaves behind not just a heartbroken
family, but also a secret so shocking, so
devastating, that it could rock the British
Establishment to its core . . . Joanna Haslam
is an ambitious young journalist, assigned to
cover the legendary actor’s funeral.
The biggest icons of the celebrity world
are in attendance. But Joanna stumbles on
something dark beneath the glamour: the
mention of a letter James Harrison has left
behind, the contents of which others have
been desperate to conceal for over seventy
years. As she peels back the veil of lies that
have shrouded the secret, she realises that
she’s close to uncovering something deadly
serious. But someone is on her tracks, and
they’ll stop at nothing to reach the letter
before she does . . .
This Book Made Me Think of You
By Libby Page
Twelve stories. Twelve months. One chance
to heal her heart... When Tilly Nightingale
receives a call telling her there’s a birthday
gift from her fiance waiting for her at her
local bookshop, it couldn’t come as more of a
shock. Partly because she can’t remember the
last time she read a book for pleasure. Mainly
because Joe died five months ago... The gift is
simple - twelve carefully-chosen books from
Joe, one for each month, to help her turn the
page on her first year without him.
Tilly sets out on a series of reading-inspired
adventures that take her around the world.
But as she begins to vlog her journey, her
story becomes more than her own.
With help from Alfie, the bookshop owner, her
budding new following and her friends and
family, can Tilly’s year of books show her how
to love again?
‘We are down,
but not beaten’
› From Page 1
Puentener spent much of
yesterday cleaning the toilets
and kitchen. The campground
has been offered a replacement
bridge by Aqualand New
Zealand.
Puentener, who has owned
the campground with his wife
Megan Gainsford for 16 years,
said it was the worst flood he
had seen.
He said the event
followed an already
poor summer for
visitor numbers due
to persistent wet
weather.
“I can’t imagine it
picking up from here,”
he said.
Two bookings
have already been
postponed. A wedding
is scheduled in
two weeks, along with The
Drum Festival on March 15,
and Puentener hopes the
campground will be back to
normal by then.
The campground remains
operational, though he said it
was far from ideal.
Despite the challenges
Puentener ruled out the
possibility of the campground
falling over.
“We are down, but not
beaten,” he said.
Jordan Luck
Among Little River’s flooded
residents is former Exponents
frontman Jordan Luck.
“Absolutely surrounded by
water. It is a moat!” Luck told
the NZ Herald.
Luck said he was woken by
his partner’s sister at around
3.30am on Tuesday after more
than 24 hours of heavy rain.
“She lives in a tiny home on
ours. It was a torrent and lake
from daybreak.”
Luck and his partner
have lived at their Banks
Peninsula home for more
than a decade and said
the flooding was as bad as
they had seen.
“My partner’s brother
lived here before, from
2004 it had never flooded
to the house.”
Luck’s treasured
music room as well as
his laundry have been
breached by the floodwaters.
“The water is creating its
Red-zoned properties to be restored
A 10-year programme to
revegetate red-zoned properties
in the Port Hills aims to
transform the area and restore
its unique biodiversity.
More than 200 red-zone
properties in Sumner, Clifton,
Redcliffs, Ferrymead, Heathcote
Valley and Governors
Bay will be planted under the
programme, as well as land in
Brooklands and Southshore.
“This is a once in a lifetime
opportunity to restore the
indigenous biodiversity of the
Port Hills and create connections
to other sites of ecological
significance,” said city council
residential red zone manager
David Little.
“The planting we’ll be doing
over the next 10 years will support
climate and ecological
resilience, and expand habitats
for native birds, insects and
lizards.”
Geotechnical
assessments
of red-zoned
properties in
the Port Hills
have confirmed
that some
properties will
never be safe
due to the risk
of rockfall, cliff
collapse and land slips.
David Little
Other sites are being offered
for sale by the council after reassessment
showed that risks
have now been mitigated or
can be mitigated readily prior
to sale.
“There will be opportunities
for local communities and
volunteers to get involved in
planting in areas where we
can manage the risk appropriately.
We’ll keep the community
updated on opportunities to get
involved,” Little said.
Cultivation to break up compacted
soil layers started in
January. This will improve
water infiltration, aeration
and root penetration so roots
have better access to moisture
and nutrients in the subsoil.
This will be followed by weed
removal and mulching before
planting starts.
in the Port Hills continues
Registrations are essential as we
must limit numbers and access to
the site due to continued rockfall
risk in the area. Please contact
ranger Sarah.Mankelow@ccc.govt.
“Unlike other areas of redzoned
land, such as along the
Ōtākaro Avon River corridor,
these properties are not safe to
be occupied or accessed by the
public. So it’s important that
people stay away from these
sites,” Little said.
“Council workers and
contractors will be following
strict health and safety
guidelines while on the site and
won’t be working in conditions
that increase the risk, such as
following heavy rainfall.”
Understanding Pet Anxiety and How to Help Your Furry Friend
Watching a beloved pet suffer from anxiety can be
heartbreaking. Like us, pets can feel fear and stress, which can
be triggered by one-off events like thunderstorms or fireworks,
or may show up as more generalised anxiety in daily life.
Knowing the signs and how to help can improve their quality
of life and bring peace to your household.
Recognising Anxiety Symptoms
Signs of anxiety in pets can include:
• Excessive Barking or Meowing
• Destructive Behaviour like chewing or digging
• Pacing or Restlessness always on high alert and unable
to settle
• Withdrawing or Hiding
• Increased Clinginess or Avoidance
• Aggression
If you notice any of these symptoms, a visit to your vet is a good
first step. Anxiety symptoms can sometimes overlap with other
health issues, so a professional evaluation can help pinpoint the
cause.
A Team Approach to Treating Anxiety
Helping an anxious pet is often a team effort. At Kowhai Vet
Clinic, we believe a combined approach can make a real
difference.
• The Owner: Owners are essential in observing and
managing their pet’s environment and applying training
techniques at home. Your involvement is key to making
changes that support calmness and confidence.
• The Veterinarian: Your vet can help rule out medical
causes, recommend treatments, and guide you to
additional support when necessary, including behavioural
specialists or medication.
• Behavioural Trainers: Trainers can teach you and your pet
specific techniques to ease anxiety triggers, including
desensitisation exercises (gradually exposing your pet to a
fear-inducing stimulus) and counter-conditioning (helping
your pet associate a positive experience with a previously
negative trigger). These techniques can help pets learn
that certain situations are safe.
• Veterinary Behaviorists: Veterinary behaviourists are
veterinarians with advanced training in animal behaviour
and can offer more advanced guidance for severe cases.
How Our Behaviour Can Influence Pet Anxiety
Many pet owners may not realise that their own behaviour can
inadvertently reinforce their pet’s anxiety. Our responses - such
as providing excessive comfort or reacting anxiously ourselves
- can validate their fears, which may intensify their stress. It’s
natural to want to comfort a pet who seems distressed, but
doing so at heightened moments of anxiety can accidentally
reinforce that stress. In fact, while training techniques for the pet
are essential, learning how to manage our own responses can be
just as impactful. Owners can work with a trainer or behavioural
specialist to learn techniques that encourage confidence and
resilience in their pets. These might include:
• Modelling Calmness: Animals are highly perceptive, and
pets often mirror the energy of those around them.
Projecting calmness can signal to an anxious pet that
all is well.
• Avoiding Over-Attention During Anxiety: While it’s hard
not to comfort a stressed pet, showing extra attention at
anxious moments can reinforce the behaviour. Instead, try
rewarding calm behaviour, so they start associating peace
with positive outcomes.
• Building Positive Associations: Rewarding a pet with
treats or praise during non-stressful moments helps them
associate the environment with positive experiences.
This approach not only benefits your pet but also strengthens
the bond and communication between you.
Practical Tips for Easing Pet Anxiety
Here are a few strategies that may help your pet feel more
secure:
1. Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet, cosy area for your
pet to retreat to, especially during loud events. Utilise
barriers such as pens, window film and baby gates to give
your pet the option to feel included in the home
environment, without the opportunity to interact with
people or other animals they may be having problems
with.
2. Use Calming Products: Pheromone diffusers, sprays, and
collars can help many pets feel more relaxed.
3. Behavioural Training: Techniques like desensitisation and
counter-conditioning can help pets learn to associate
calmness with anxiety-inducing situations.
4. Regular Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Physical
activity and engaging toys can relieve stress and keep their
minds occupied.
5. Consider Medication When Necessary: In severe cases,
medication may be a helpful supplement to behavioural
training.
It’s OK to Ask for Help
Addressing anxiety is a journey, but with a team approach and
mindful owner involvement, you can make a big difference.
If you’re concerned about your pet’s anxiety, Kowhai Vet Clinic
is here to guide you every step of the way.
Readers share memories of
the 1951 wharfies’ dispute
Heathcote eye two-day
rebound after defeat
BY KEES CHALMERS
A great article in Bay Harbour
News, February 11 (1951
waterfront dispute).
At the time,I was at primary
school.
Between our house and the
empty section next up the hill
there was an open gutter that ran
between two high fences, behind
another house, to a 30cm hole in
the red rock wall where surplus
rain ran out across the footpath
to the road.
We had a large and prolific
garden and two or three evenings
a week, for some time, my father
lifted me over the back fence into
the drain area and handed me a
bag full of vegetables.
Many years later I realised they
could not all have come from our
garden. His instructions were to
take the bag along the drain and
leave it on the inside of the hole,
and I must never ever tell what I
was doing. His word was law and
he was always obeyed.
I had no idea why I was being
asked to do that job and nor did
I realise the importance of my
silence as providing anything to
those suffering families was a
chargeable offence.
I kept a close look out for rats
and other creepies that might
live there and certainly didn’t
dawdle.
I returned along the drain, up
to the empty section above, out
to the road and home around the
block.
Apparently, my crossing that
yard had been a signal for a
waterfront worker to make the
collect.
Sixty years later my sister
mentioned how she had delivered
vegetables to that hole in the wall,
we were being sent on alternate
nights but had both kept that
activity to ourselves for all those
years.
No doubt many other working
families tried to discreetly
support those in need, but it was
a very difficult time for all those
living and working in the port.
- S McEwan
I was 11 at the time. Dad was
Christchurch passenger manager
for the interisland ferry.
My memory is we, as a family,
dad, mum, elder brother and
myself, cycled from home near
Riccarton Bush to the railway
station and trained to Lyttelton,
armed with brooms and brushes
to help prepare the ferry for
passengers.
When we got to the wharf there
PHOTO: TE ŪAKA THE LYTTELTON MUSEUM
was a group of protesters preventing
us accessing the gangway.
They were yelling and pushing us
which was very frightening.
After a few minutes a couple of
people in uniforms (I can’t recall
if they were police or soldiers)
cleared our way and we went on
board to do our stuff.
We only did this once but my
memory has stuck.
Heathcote’s focus now shifts
back to the metro premiership
two-day competition after
Saturday’s four-wicket loss to
Sydenham ended their one-day
campaign.
Heathcote will take on a struggling
Riccarton side on Saturday
at Riccarton Domain at 10.30am.
Riccarton finished bottom of
the one-day ladder, winless in
five matches. Heathcote also
enters the fixture in poor form,
having lost four games in a row.
“It’s two teams that haven’t
been on the right side of results –
we’re coming together now and
I’d imagine both teams would be
pretty hungry to get on the right
side,” said Heathcote playercoach
Tyler Lortan.
Batting first against Sydenham,
Heathcote were 61/1 before a collapse
saw three wickets fall for
two runs.
Young guns Jackson Garry and
Callum Samson, back from New
Zealand under 19 duty, rebuilt
with a 67-run partnership.
“The way they went about
their business and the decisions
they made under pressure was
very mature,” Lortan said.
Samson was dismissed for
39 trying to lift the run rate,
and Heathcote were eventually
bowled out for 188.
“They just kept the pressure
on us and we couldn’t really take
control of the game from a batting
perspective,” Lortan said.
Heathcote’s Caleb Donaldson faces
Sydenham fast bowler Mitchell Gardner.
PHOTO: KEVIN CONGDON
Sydenham opener Jacob Cotter’s
rapid 60 off 45 balls set
the tone in the chase, and their
middle order finished the job
with four wickets in hand.
Sydenham went on to beat St
Albans by four wickets in Sunday’s
semi-final. They will now
take on Burnside West in the
one-day final on Sunday.
“Obviously the result didn’t
go our way, but there’s some
good stuff happening and if we
continue to apply the learnings
the tide will turn,” Lortan said.
Despite the recent losses, Lortan
believes Heathcote carry
momentum into the two-day
competition, where they were
unbeaten earlier in the season
and now sit fourth, less
than four points off leaders
Sydenham.
“There is an opportunity
to challenge for this two-day
comp, which is obviously exciting,”
he said.
“But I’d rather just focus on
what we can control now.”
Highend hairdressing
without the highend cost!
Salon owner/operator:
Rosanne Marks
(in forefront)
WHY pay top dollar at a city salon
when you can get the same forefront
hair styling at a local salon for a fraction
of the cost. “We don’t have the same
overheads as large city salons and can
provide the same quality services at
lower prices,” said Rosanne Marks.
The experienced team at Sirocco
Hair Studio can freshen those locks and
because Sirocco is a suburban salon,
you’ll get the same high-end city hair
styling at a fraction of the cost.
Sirocco Hair Studio, located in Mt
Pleasant, has been operating under the
ownership of Rosanne (Rosie) for the past
12 years. Its serene suburban vibe set in
stylish, comfortable surroundings, along
with competitive rates (for example,
haircuts from $60), has made it popular
with both regular and new clients.
“We currently have three senior
stylists working full-time, however we
have an opening for another stylist
to join the team working Thursday,
Friday, Saturday,” said Rosie. “It’s a
part-time position and hours can be
negotiated.” For more information email
siroccohair2013@gmail.com.
The Sirocco team is made up of
Rosie, Emma and Jena. Rosie has been
hairdressing for well over 20 years
and is highly regarded in her craft.
Emma has been part of Sirocco for over
six years and is a creative foil colour
specialist. Jena joined the team two
years ago and has grown a reputation
for amazing short funky haircuts and
colouring masterpieces. Needless to say,
the three are extremely experienced and
competent senior stylists.
Sirocco Hair Studio offers a wide
range of professional hairdressing
services to men, women and children.
They recognise how fast fashion styles
and colours change and make sure
they always employ up to date designs,
equipment and techniques. With these
credentials, Sirocco Hair Studio is more
than qualified to offer inspiration by way
of a chic new cut and or a sensational
new colour.
“You can trust us to work with you
to ensure that your hair reflects your
own unique style and personality,
while staying in trend. We want to give
the advice needed to have you leave
looking fabulous and feeling relaxed and
pampered,” said Rosie.
But their wide selection of services
doesn’t just stop at cutting hair, they also
offer Colour/Foils, Men’s, Ladies and Kids
Haircuts, Consultations; Fashion Waves,
and Conditioning treatment for hair and
scalp.
The girls also have extensive product
knowledge and assist with supplying the
best take home products to keep your
hair manageable and healthy between
appointments.
“We’re very excited to announce
the arrival of a fantastic new hair
strengthening product that’s designed
for coloured, chemically treated or
heat-styled hair. It’s called K-REVIVE by
Nak and is has been clinically proven
to strengthen and repair hair up to 97%
in just two minutes. It brings next-level
hair repair to life both in-salon and at
home and is a convenient take home
treatment.” said Rosie.
Support local, save, and look and
feel fantastic! Sirocco Hair Studio is
open Monday to Wednesday 8am - late,
Thursday 9am - late, Friday 9am - 5pm,
and Saturday 9am - 3pm.
relaxed evenings in their own private
sanctuary. A new purchase now sees
them committed to selling, and all
