Dropping kilos, underwater adventures and half a dozen thrillers ...

Dropping kilos, underwater adventures and half a dozen thrillers ...

Jean Napier Hattingh says ever since

she can remember, she’s been blessed

with a spirit of adventure. Born with a

form of hip dysplasia, and growing up

on a farm in the Western Cape, she was,

she says, extremely curious and quite

wild. She remembers being taught

to swim at four, first in a pool, then

the farm dam, and fishing with her

dad in a fibreglass dinghy, and later in

her uncle’s larger boat on the Cuanza

River in Angola. And then her first time

snorkelling in the Red Sea. Against

the Tide is her story ... an adventurous

one, of the challenges of breaking

barriers in the male-dominated world

of spearfishing, of thrilling underwater

hunts, and of resilience against physical

danger and societal biases. Holder of

many South African and Australian

records, it’s a brilliant read for anyone

who’s interested in adventure, diving

and the sea. Ulwandle Publishers

finally lost 40kg. And kept it off.

She shares the mindset shifts,

Ballito entrepreneur

Bonita Eder chats to

us about motherhood,

meaning and her clothing

brand, The Everyday.

Bonita is the founder of The

Everyday, a collection of

comfortable, handmade

clothing. She is married to her best

friend Jarrod and is a mom to two

little ones who are her absolute joy.

Raised in Pretoria, her path took her

to the US after school, where a lifechanging

faith encounter reshaped

her direction and led her to Australia

to attend Bible college. While she did

not begin with a clear career plan,

she discovered a deep love for faith,

people, writing and fashion - threads

that have since woven together into

the life and work she leads today.

What inspired you to start

The Everyday?

The Everyday began as a small seed in

my heart many years ago. It first took

shape as a little project called Boho by

Bon, where I made macramé rainbows

for children. A trip to Vietnam with

my husband sparked something

new. I fell in love with the textiles and

started experimenting with linen

dresses. That's where my love for

creating clothing really began.

A few years later, after my first baby,

Luna Rae, was born, I designed a dress

I wanted for myself, something flowy

and feminine, but also practical for

breastfeeding. When people kept

asking where it was from, I started

taking small orders on the side while

my husband and I were pastoring a

church in Cape Town.

Eight months later, I stepped out

in faith, resigned and focused

on growing the business while

embracing motherhood. Five years

on, The Everyday has grown into

something beautiful. My priority

has always been being a present

mom while building a meaningful

brand. I work from home in the

pockets of time I have, during naps,

quiet time and evenings and I'm

incredibly grateful for the grace and

support around me, especially from

my husband.

How has motherhood

influenced your approach to

life and business?

Motherhood has taught me that

presence matters more than

performance. Before having children,

success looked very different. Now, I

am more mindful of how I spend my

time, energy and resources. It has also

taught me flexibility.

Motherhood has made me gentler

and more empathetic. It has helped

me connect more deeply with other

women and moms and that shapes

how and why I create. The Everyday

exists to remind women, especially

mothers, that they are seen, valued

and worthy of beauty and intention in

their daily lives.

What drew you to the North

Coast?

We visited Ballito a few times as a

family and fell more in love with it

each time. There's a slower pace of

life here that really resonates with us.

Being part of Linc Church was also

a big factor - community matters

deeply to us. We took a step of faith

and moved here in June 2025 and it's

been one of our best decisions.

What do you love most

about the community here?

The warmth. People on the North

Coast are incredibly friendly and

open-hearted. I have had so many

meaningful conversations with

moms at parks and play areas. We've

felt so welcomed.

What advice would you give

to other women dreaming of

starting their own business?

Nothing is impossible. Start with

what you have, right where you are.

You don't need perfect conditions

to begin - just willingness and

courage. And if you’re a mom, it’s

okay to put your children first.

Business and career will still be

there, but the early years with your

kids are short and irreplaceable. Be

present. Enjoy the season.

Just for fun

Your go-to Everyday piece

right now?

The Gracie dress from the Bluebell

collection.

Morning ritual you never

skip?

Coffee and my Bible on the

balcony, even with a thousand

interruptions.

One word that describes

this season of your life?

Becoming.

Coffee order?

Single-shot cappuccino.

One value you hope your

children learn by watching

you?

Faith and wholeness. I want them

to see a life where faith, family,

work and emotion are integrated,

not competing. A full life, not a

flawless one.

Favourite North Coast spot

to relax?

Honestly, home. I’m a homebody.

But you’ll also find us at Plato at

Linc Campus or Mellow Nello in

Salt Rock for great coffee.

HOPE in motion

We sat down with Chris and Zoe Lomas to learn more about the heart behind their

Ballito-based organisation, Hope4®.

Text: JENNIFER CAMPBELL

By the time Chris and Zoe arrived in Ballito last year, their

lives had already been shaped by war zones, refugee

camps and some of Europe's toughest humanitarian

landscapes. Yet, sit with them over coffee and you

are struck not by drama, but by warmth, humour and

an unshakeable belief that ordinary people can change

extraordinary circumstances.

They are the founders of Hope4®, an international NPO

now headquartered in Ballito, with operations spanning

Moldova, Ukraine and beyond. Their story begins quietly

with a schoolteacher, a reluctant entrepreneur and a single

decision to say yes.

A call that changed everything

Zoe, a French and Spanish teacher originally from Romania,

18 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga March 2026

first visited Moldova as an interpreter on a church trip.

She was confronted with women in prison raising babies,

teenagers growing up in detention centres and children

abandoned, not through lack of love, but because poverty

had left parents with no choice.

"I just wanted to encourage them," she says. "To give

them hope." When she called Chris with the idea, "Let's

move to Moldova", he responded immediately with "Over

my dead body." But life had other plans.

From reluctance to resolve

Covid devastated Chris's UK business, giving the couple

space to rethink their future. By February 2021, they had

landed in a freezing Moldovan winter, unsure of what lay

ahead, but determined to serve.

GETBALL0326pg018.indd 1

12-Feb-26 2:03:18 PM

They started small: buying washing machines, delivering

food, helping wherever there was need.

Then the war began. In February 2022, Russia invaded

Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of refugees poured into

Moldova. Chris and Zoe donned their red Hope4 jackets

and drove straight into the chaos.

When hope became a movement

At the first refugee centre, the answer to "What do you

need?" was simple: everything.

With almost no funds, Chris made commitments he

wasn't sure they could keep. Then came a phone call that

sparked global fundraising, within a week, R2-million had

been raised.

Hope4® quickly became one of Moldova's earliest and

most effective responders. Warehouses opened, aid

poured in, partnerships formed. Since the war began,

they've helped distribute more than R1.2-billion in

humanitarian assistance. They even expanded into

Ukraine, delivering aid near the front lines, despite

warnings that their lives were at risk.

A new chapter in South Africa

Nine years ago, Chris and Zoe honeymooned in Cape

Town and fell in love with South Africa. In 2025, Ballito

became home and with it, Hope4®'s most ambitious

chapter yet.

Here, the focus has shifted to long-term transformation:

renovating schools, providing essential supplies and

rolling out rape recovery kits for children - tackling one of

South Africa's most devastating hidden crises.

"It's estimated that more than 150 000 children are raped in

South Africa every year," Chris says. "We can’t ignore that."

Hope through jobs

Alongside Hope4®, the couple has launched a purposedriven

business to create dignified employment. From

Ballito, they are building a call centre that pays double the

national average salary, with profit sharing.

Their healthcare initiative, Hope4 Doctors, aims to employ

hundreds of professionals and deliver over two million

treatments across South Africa within the next two years.

Love at the core

Married for nine years, Chris and Zoe describe their

partnership not as sacrifice, but privilege.

"We have given up on our own dreams," Zoe says. "Now

we work on the dreams of others."

They still draw no salary from Hope4®, insisting that

transparency is non-negotiable.

From Moldova to Ukraine, and now Ballito, their journey

has been defined by compassion and faith, not ambition.

From their small North Coast office, Hope4® continues to

reach further, making a tangible difference well beyond

local borders.

Letting go and

moving forward

When Johannesburg-based Sean Clarke underwent

an amputation, he chose to spend his recovery on the

North Coast. He shared his incredible story with us.

Sean was seven years old when his life split into a

‘before’ and ‘after’.

“One second I was a little boy playing outside with

my brothers… and the next I was fighting for my life,”

he remembers.

In a moment of fearless child logic, he jumped off the roof.

He hit the grass with a heavy thud, glass from the window

behind him raining down, and then he saw it.

“There was a massive stream of blood pouring out of my

leg. Not dripping, not trickling. Pouring. Like someone had

opened a tap inside my leg. That image is burned into my

memory. It’s the moment my life changed forever.”

His dad scooped him up, hands clamped around his thigh.

His mom drove straight to the hospital. In the backseat,

Sean fought to stay awake.

“I remember how cold I suddenly felt, like the warmth was

draining out of me. My eyes kept wanting to close and I

kept thinking, if I close them, I will never wake up again. I

kept saying, ‘I’m too young to die. Please help me.’”

He survived but nothing would be simple again.

Sean Clarke with James Willers, a beneficiary of the

Gammie on the Go Foundation

Text: JENNIFER CAMPBELL

From ‘Gammie foot’ to finish lines

The accident meant years of surgery, specialists and

adaptation.

“My disability was held together by love, by specialists, by

visits to orthotists, by parents who refused to let me fall

through the cracks. I didn’t realise how rare that was until I

got older.”

Instead of shrinking his world, the trauma lit something up

inside him.

“Surviving that moment planted a fire that’s shaped every

step since. I’d stared death in the face before I even lost my

baby teeth. Once you experience that, you don’t want to

waste a second of your life.”

Sean pushed his damaged leg further than most able-

bodied people ever dream of: Comrades, Ironman, a ride

from Joburg to Cape Town and more. Somewhere along

the way, that injured limb became a character in his story.

“My Gammie foot became a best friend,” he says. “It helped

me accept who I was.”

While pushing his physical limits, Sean also built a career in

global tech logistics. In the background, a different purpose

was forming, one that would become the Gammie on the

Go Foundation, focused on disability inclusion and mobility

support for children.

The day he chose to let go

By 2025, the cost of all that effort had caught up.

“My leg hurt every single day. My mobility kept getting

worse. I’d done everything: orthotics, physio, injections, rest,

strength work, new shoes. Nothing changed.”

After years of big races, his foot ‘fell apart’. The X-rays were

bleak: arthritis, joint separation, bone spurs, things shifting

where they shouldn’t.

“It wasn’t this big heroic moment where I woke up and said,

‘Cool, let’s chop my leg off,’” he says.

“It was months of sitting with myself, admitting things I didn’t

want to admit. I wasn’t just losing a limb. I was losing something

that had been with me through absolutely everything.”

Therapy helped him grieve and name the fear. His doctors

were frank: keeping the leg would mean more pain, longterm

damage to his hip and back and a smaller, more

painful life.

“Eventually, it hit me: the leg I’d been trying so hard to

protect was actually holding me back. I stopped seeing

the amputation as the end of something familiar,” he says. “I

started seeing it as a genuine chance to start again. To have

less pain. To move better. To live better.”

From one boy to a country of kids

A few years ago, Sean found himself replaying his

childhood but this time imagining it without support.

“Suddenly it wasn’t about me anymore. It was about every

kid in South Africa living the same challenges I had, but

without the support and resources I took for granted.”

“The purpose of the foundation is to make sure no child in

South Africa faces a disability alone. It’s about giving kids

the mobility, dignity and comfort they deserve.”

What has he learnt along the way?

“You don’t have to be perfect to do something powerful

with your life,” Sean says. “You can be scared and still

choose to move forward. Your challenges don’t cancel

your potential. You are capable of rebuilding your life

into something extraordinary, even after everything has

changed.”

Big screen dreams

From the North Coast to the Sydney Opera House… it sounds like

the plot of a feel-good film, but for Ballito filmmaker SJ van Breda,

it’s real life. And it’s been a long time coming.

SJ recently scooped multiple

international awards for

her short documentary

Squashbox, a beautifully shot,

deeply human portrait of

Maskandi duo David “Qadasi” Jenkins

and Maqhinga Radebe. The film,

created using a smartphone and a

drone, took top honours at SmartFone

Flick Fest in Australia, proving that

powerful storytelling matters far more

than expensive gear.

Although SJ dreamed of filmmaking

from childhood, she initially

chose a very different route. A top

student in science and maths, she

completed a demanding mechanical

engineering degree at UCT, followed

by postgraduate work in aerospace

research. On paper, it was an

impressive trajectory. In reality, she

was deeply unhappy.

“I had the job, the car, the apartment –

and I hated every second,” she admits.

Still in her early twenties, she made

the brave decision to change course

completely. With savings, family

support and a lot of courage, she

enrolled at film school in Vancouver,

tackling an intense, hands-on

programme that confirmed what

she’d always known: this was where

she belonged.

After returning to South Africa,

breaking into the industry wasn’t

easy. But instead of waiting for

permission or perfect conditions, SJ

created her own opportunities. With

limited resources but strong creative

instincts, she began making short

artist documentaries, often filming

solo, often on her phone, focusing

on painters, sculptors, designers and

makers whose work fascinated her.

Working alone taught her to think

like a director, cinematographer and

editor all at once. It sharpened her

storytelling instincts and deepened

her sensitivity to her subjects. Her

documentaries feel intimate rather

than intrusive – collaborative rather

than extractive. She builds trust slowly,

spends time with her subjects, and

shapes each story with care.

Squashbox grew out of that

same approach. After years of

encouragement from her father

to document the story of David

and Maqhinga, she finally agreed,

cautiously at first. Musicians, she says,

can be harder to film than visual

artists. But what she discovered was

a layered, emotional story about

partnership, culture and musical

heritage.

Filming took place in and around

KwaZulu-Natal, including misty,

atmospheric scenes in the Karkloof. The

finished film blends landscape, music

and personality into something that

feels both grounded and cinematic.

The international recognition that

followed has been surreal. Walking into

the Sydney Opera House for the festival

screening – while also filming a behindthe-scenes

documentary about the

event – felt almost out-of-body. Even

now, she says, it hasn’t fully sunk in.

What meant the most? The audience

response, including homesick South

Africans in the crowd who connected

instantly with the film’s sense of

place and sound. There are already

conversations underway about

further festival screenings abroad.

Despite the accolades, SJ remains

refreshingly grounded. She runs

her own production company from

Ballito, focusing mainly on postproduction

and editing work for

clients around the world, including

major YouTube creators and authors.

Her documentaries remain passion

projects – self-driven, unsponsored

and creatively free.

That freedom matters to her. Without

external funders shaping the narrative,

she can follow instinct, curiosity and

connection – the things that sit at the

heart of her work.

A bold new

When Maureen Campbell’s debut novel African Dawn landed three years ago, it drew

chapter

When Maureen Campbell’s debut novel

landed three years ago, it drew

readers into a raw, compelling world. Now she’s back with Under the Banyan Tree, a

quietly powerful story set in 1940s Durban.

Perhaps one of the most inspiring parts of

Maureen’s literary journey is Maureen herself.

Now in her seventies and very much

living the writerly dream in Ballito, she is a

reminder that creativity has no expiry date. Stories

come when they choose you and Maureen

proves it is never too late to answer that call. Not

in a sentimental, age-labelling way but in the very

real sense that passion has no timetable and

bold new chapters can begin at any point

in life.

For readers who loved African

Dawn, , how would you describe

Under the Banyan Tree?

This is a vibrant story of a young

Indian woman who overcomes

adversity through endurance

during a tumultuous time in

South African history. The novel

unfolds against the backdrop of

1949 Durban, a place alive with

movement, colour and tension.

It’s a story about community,

inequality and the currents of

unrest that shaped South African

history.

What first sparked the idea for this

story and why set it in 1940s Durban?

I can trace the moment of inspiration back

to July 2021 and the riots that shook parts

of South Africa. Those events reminded me

of the January 1949 riots. These were two

episodes of violence separated by decades,

yet connected by the same underlying

fractures: how inequality and economics can

spark unrest and lead to violence.

Durban in Under the Banyan Tree isn’t just a

setting; it’s a character. The city has an energy

born of its people and readers who love immersive,

textured South African settings will feel instantly

transported.

What has early reader feedback meant to

you so far? Any reaction that really stayed

with you?

Writing a book is an act of vulnerability.

Sharing it with the world is even more so.

I have been inspired by the feedback

I have received. One comment

that stayed with me came from

an author friend who called the

story “powerful.” It’s the kind of

affirmation that fuels a writer’s

spirit.

A decade of

progress

What does a decade of quiet, consistent care look like?

In Ballito, it looks like clean pavements, safe walkways,

and a welcoming beachfront, thanks to the work of the

Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), which recently

marked 10 years of service to the precinct.

Scan to take the 2026

BUIP Perception Survey

Established in 2015, the UIP has

played a vital role in enhancing the

public environment, ensuring that

Ballito remains a safe, clean and

sought-after warm water lifestyle

destination on the North Coast.

Over the past decade, the UIP has

facilitated hundreds of interventions,

from repairing stormwater

infrastructure and upgrading

promenade access to repainting curbs,

improving verge landscaping, and

maintaining high-traffic public spaces.

To showcase this transformation, the

UIP recently launched its Progress

Portfolio, a digital, visual guide

featuring before-and-after images,

key milestones, and insights into

how long-term precinct care delivers

lasting impact.

“It’s often the work you don’t notice

that makes the biggest difference,”

28 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga March 2026

says Dieter Fittkau, Operations

Manager at the UIP. “We’ve spent the

last 10 years showing up every day

and the results speak for themselves.”

“The Progress Portfolio is more than a

document. It’s a story of how public

space, when maintained consistently,

builds pride, confidence and value

in a place,” adds Precinct Manager

Thierry Leclezio.

The Portfolio is updated annually and

available for public download via the

Ballito UIP website.

As Ballito continues to grow, the UIP

remains committed to building on

this foundation, one clean street, one

cared-for verge and one safe walkway

at a time. Because when we look after

our spaces, we build a place we’re

proud to call home.

For the love of treasure

Those antique gems you don’t use … it may be worth exploring their value.

Antiques and Coins can be trusted for expert appraisals and valuations.

Open a drawer. Check the back of that long-unopened

cabinet. Somewhere between old letters and tangled chains,

there may be a treasure you haven’t thought about in years.

Perhaps it’s the Denco pocket watch your grandpa gave you

on your eighteenth birthday or that vintage gold bracelet

that once belonged to Aunt Diane, which you accidentally

broke the last time you wore it. Often, these vintage

objects can open a Pandora’s box of feelings – a mental

album of fond memories, sentimental moments, or even

decade-old resentment.

As much as ‘things’ can be an extension of ourselves, they

can also mean a new beginning for something else. Selling

valuables might be a difficult decision, but perhaps the

greatest worth of something is what it allows you to do

next … financial breathing room. Relief from clutter. A longpostponed

trip. Or simply some peace of mind.

But one thing is certain … parting with valuable pieces is

often a decision that is long-weighed and complex. And

when the day comes that you do decide to sell, you want

expert appraisals and trusted valuations. You want to know –

am I getting a fair price? Can I trust the buyer/dealer?

A reputable buyer-and-seller business understands this

hesitation and respects it. That’s why transparency matters.

Clear testing. Accurate weighing. Real-time pricing and

payments. No games, just honest and straightforward offers.

Meeting these expectations daily are modern-day treasure

hunters, Rivac and Devon Alberts. This sibling duo are

antique fanatics whose hobby turned into a business –

Antiques and Coins. They have been professionally and

efficiently dealing with people’s valued items for more than

a decade.

Rivac started the business in 2010. “Antiques and Coins

was born from a profound love for history,” says Devon

- who is the current director. She and her brother, Rivac,

are both avid collectors of all things old, each with their

own large collection of various SAAND graded coins, war

medals, books, furniture, record players, crystal crockery,

vintage weapons, the list goes on. They’re essentially SA’s

experts of the Antique Roadshow, just without the scripts

and cameras – and, no surprise here, it’s one of Devon’s

best-loved television shows.

Some of her personal prized collection pieces include an

R. Lalique bowl made by a Frenchman in the 1900s. “I also

adore my antique gold diamond ring I bought from a client

years ago and decided to add to my personal collection. It’s

a piece I will never melt down or change. I absolutely love

Victorian pieces. They always tell a story.”

Apart from being surrounded by antiques - their homes

can attest - there is nothing more they love than having

personal interactions with their clients. While their head

offices for both Antiques and Coins as well as We Buy Gold

(of which Rivac is the director) are situated in the same

building in Garsfontein, Pretoria - they travel all over the

country to see clients.

“Over the years we have built a trusted bond with most

retirement homes across South Africa. We arrange an

appointment through the home’s management channels

and evaluate and appraise the resident’s prized pieces in the

comfort of their familiar surroundings. This makes the whole

process safe, simple, and efficient for everyone,” says Devon.

“Building meaningful relationships with our clients is what I

love most about my work. I still have clients from years back

wishing me Merry Christmas each year and bringing me

muffins when I visit their retirement estate.”

Paired with a long, long list of certifications and specialised

experience, they also use top-notch equipment to check

coin authenticity, do currency validations, metal analysis

and measuring of precious stones and metals, among

others. Ensuring that you, and your valued items, are in the

very best hands!

Their business thrives in keeping the present and past

in constant touch. And perhaps most importantly, they

understand the substance of remembering – this is not only

their line of work, but also their life’s quest.

Building beauty, building legacy

From his home country of Cuba to cruise ships and eventually to KZN’s busiest malls,

Iliusky Leon Chavez’s path into the beauty industry has been shaped by hard work and

personal loss. After building Microderma alongside his late wife Anita, he continues to

lead the business with a strong focus on people and the legacy they created together.

Leon’s career began at sea, working in

beauty and aesthetics on cruise ships,

where he refined his technical skills

and discovered how personal care

can build confidence and connection.

It was also there that he met Anita –

the woman who would become both

his wife and business partner.

Their relationship, and later

their company, was built on

complementary strengths. Leon

brought deep treatment knowledge

and technical discipline, while Anita

brought marketing instinct, style and

a natural ability with people. Together,

they shaped the early identity of what

would become Microderma.

Growing it from the ground up

The early days were hands-on

and demanding. Leon balanced

treatments with staff management

and client care, growing the brand

through pop-ups, mall kiosks and

constant face-to-face engagement.

He believes visibility and trust are

earned in person. His philosophy

remains straightforward: people buy

from people, and experience matters

more than price.

Microderma’s expansion into major

retail centres, Gateway and The

Pavilion – among the first clinics of

the kind in a KZN mall setting – came

through persistence and calculated

risk. Leon personally oversaw leases,

construction and store launches,

describing each opening as intense

and all-consuming, requiring months

of close supervision to ensure quality

and systems were firmly in place.

Loss and leadership

In April 2024, Anita passed away after

complications related to sudden

illness. Her loss was devastating. She

32 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga March 2026

had been the public-facing energy

behind the brand – warm, stylish and

deeply involved in marketing and

daily operations. Leon describes her as

someone who lit up every room and

drove the couple’s shared ambition.

Continuing the business without her

has been his greatest challenge, but

also his clearest motivation. He now

leads with an even stronger emphasis

on structure, sustainability and

standards – determined to honour

what they built together.

Business as endurance

For Leon, business is not glamour. It’s

endurance. Growth needs systems.

Skill is only a fraction of success. And

resilience, he believes, is the true

entrepreneur’s edge.

Leon’s advice for aspiring

business owners

• Learn the business side – skill

alone is not enough.

• Financial and business education

are essential.

• Expect problems after opening –

tough seasons are inevitable.

• Build strong systems early.

• Be prepared to work hands-on at

the start.

• Invest in self-development

continuously.

• Choose partners with shared

vision and commitment.

Human rights are the

foundation of a just and

peaceful world. The United

Nations reminds us that these

rights belong to every person,

everywhere. Yet many of us

rarely pause to ask: Do I truly

know my rights? And how do I

live them each day?

Knowing our rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights,

adopted in 1948, outlines freedoms such

as equality, safety and respect. But rights

are not just legal words on paper; they are

lived experiences. To know our rights is to

recognise our inherent worth, and to see that

same worth reflected in others.

Spirituality as empowerment

Spirituality offers a unique lens through

which to embody human rights. When we

connect with our inner self - the soul - we

discover peace, resilience, and self-respect.

This inner awareness empowers us to stand

tall in dignity, not through confrontation,

but through clarity and calm strength. In this

way, spirituality helps us honour our rights

rather than merely assert them.

ADVERTORIAL

SPIRITUALITY

IN FLIGHT

Making human rights a living experience

Honouring the rights of others

Human rights are not only about ‘me’; they are about ‘we.’ When we see beyond

labels of race, gender, or nationality, and recognise the soul in each person,

compassion naturally arises. Spiritual practice nurtures empathy, reminding us

that every individual deserves respect. To honour another’s rights is to affirm their

humanity, just as we do our own.

Practices for building spiritual capacity

Even in the sky, we can cultivate habits that

make human rights a living reality:

• Meditation moments: Close your eyes, breathe

deeply, and reconnect with your inner calm.

• Affirmations: Repeat silently, ‘I am worthy, and so is

every soul I meet.’

• Conscious kindness: A smile, a respectful word,

or a patient gesture can ripple far beyond the

moment.

• Detachment from anger: Choosing peace over

reaction strengthens both your dignity and your

relationships.

A journey beyond borders

Air travel reminds us that humanity is

interconnected. Just as flights cross borders,

spirituality helps us transcend divisions. When we

carry dignity, respect, and compassion in our hearts,

human rights cease to be abstract; they become the

way we live, breathe, and relate to one another.

So as you journey today, consider this: every seat

around you is filled with a soul deserving of peace,

respect and kindness. Human rights are not only

declarations in a document, they are the wings that

allow humanity to soar.

Healthy dairy treat

A delish dairy crowd-pleasing cake.

YOGHURT & STRAWBERRY BUNDT CAKE

Locally grown strawberries and double-cream yoghurt

infuse this elegant, fluted ring cake. It’s a showstopper

on a celebration table, but equally good at picnics or as a

summer afternoon tea treat.

You’ll need: 3 eggs, 180ml yoghurt, 200g castor sugar,

180ml oil, 1 Tbsp vanilla paste, 180g flour, 80g cornflour,

½ cup strawberries diced. For the glaze, 250ml yoghurt, 1

lemon juiced, 125ml icing sugar sifted.

To make: Preheat oven to 160 °C and grease a 22cm bundt

cake tin. Separate the eggs into two bowls: one for yolks

and one for whites.

Whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Add yoghurt,

and sugar to the egg yolks and whisk until the mixture is

light and fluffy. While whisking slowly pour the oil into the

yolk mixture. Gradually add the flour to the yolk mixture,

whisking until just combined. Fold the whisked egg

whites into the batter. Dust the strawberries in a little flour,

then gently fold them into the batter. Pour the batter into

a greased Bundt tin.

Bake for 50 minutes, test whether the cake is done by

inserting a skewer, if it comes out clean the cake is done.

Once cooled, glaze the cake with icing and decorate with

fresh strawberries. For the glaze, whisk together yoghurt,

lemon juice and icing sugar in a bowl. Refrigerate for 30

minutes before glazing.

Grounded

by clay

Earthy, tactile and intentional, Rebecca

Katherine Rose’s ceramics are shaped by

place, process and presence.

Text: JENNIFER CAMPBELL Photographs: DAVID LOXTON AND LIGHT & LARK PHOTOGRAPHY

Finding freedom in the

process

Largely self-taught, Rebecca describes her relationship

with clay as intuitive rather than controlled. While she

has completed some formal training, she's quick to

point out that clay resists perfection and demands

patience.

"You can spend 15 hours on a piece and it still cracks or

warps," she explains. "It's humbling. It forces you to slow

down."

That surrender has shaped both her work and her

outlook. Rather than beginning with rigid plans, she

allows the clay to lead.

"I'll often just pick it up and ask, 'Where are we going?'

That's the most exhilarating part for me… the freedom."

Rebecca didn't set out to become a ceramic artist. Her

path to clay was quiet and unexpected, sparked by a

single pottery workshop that changed everything.

"I'd never even considered working with clay," she says.

"But the first time I touched it, I remember thinking: I can

breathe. This is what I want to do."

Originally from Johannesburg, Rebecca relocated to the North

Coast after getting married in 2020. The slower pace and

proximity to nature gave her the space to listen more closely to

herself and to create.

Inspired by imperfection

Rebecca's pieces are unmistakably organic. Earthy tones, soft neutrals,

textured surfaces and imperfect forms echo the natural elements that

inspire her.

"I am drawn to things that feel grounded and intentional," she says.

"The way something grows, withers, takes time. That’ s the approach I

try to bring into my work."

While hand-building is her first love, she also enjoys working on the

pottery wheel, particularly creating cups inspired by Japanese tea

culture, another influence rooted in ritual, slowness and mindfulness.

A home studio, a shared space

Working from her home studio in Ballito, Rebecca sees her creative

space as an extension of her art.

Hosting open studios has become an important part of her journey, inviting

people not just to view finished pieces, but to understand the process

behind them.

"There is something really healing about engaging with clay, about

understanding what it takes to build something from nothing."

Now working as a full-time artist, Rebecca is developing new

collections, planning future exhibitions and preparing to host her

own workshops: intimate, therapeutic spaces designed to encourage

creativity, connection and letting go.

"I just want my art to speak for itself," she says simply. And in its quiet

strength, it does.

All about

family life

This Salt Rock home isn’t trying to impress with big gestures or over-the-top finishes.

Instead, it does something far more impressive. It understands how a family actually

lives, day in and day out.

Text: JENNIFER CAMPBELL Photographs: ELSA YOUNG

Designed by Fyfe Boyce

Design, the interiors

prioritise clarity over

decoration. Every decision

is centred on how the spaces will be

used - not just now, but years from

now. The result is a home that feels

calm and genuinely easy to live in.

This is not a trend-led home, nor one

built around bold statements. Instead,

it is defined by comfort and longevity.

A calm, neutral base

The palette is intentionally pared back.

Soft neutrals set the tone, layered with

warm timber and subtle touches of

black. These darker accents echo the

home’s exterior and lend rhythm and

structure to the open-plan spaces.

Rather than relying on colour to make

a statement, the interiors lean into

texture and tonal contrast.

It’s a quieter approach, one that

allows the home to feel settled rather

than styled. Art and personal pieces

add personality, while the underlying

framework remains simple and

timeless.

Open-plan, done properly

The success of the home lies in how

the generous open-plan area is

40 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga March 2026

GETBALL0326pg040.indd 1

broken up without losing its sense of

flow. A curved, slatted timber screen

gently separates the dining and living

areas, creating definition without

closing anything off.

Furniture does much of the heavy

lifting. The dining table visually links

the kitchen and lounge, while rugs,

consoles and lighting give each zone

a sense of purpose. There are no hard

lines here, just a natural progression

from one space to the next. The

result is open-plan living that feels

organised, not overwhelming.

Living outward

Indoor and outdoor spaces are

closely connected, with flooring

flowing seamlessly onto the terrace.

This extension of the living area

encourages easy movement and

makes entertaining - or simply

enjoying family life - feel effortless.

Outside, the design remains

deliberately restrained. Simple

furniture, dappled light beneath a

timber pergola and uninterrupted

views of the pool and garden keep

the focus on atmosphere rather than

excess.

CAR REVIEW

A NEW KIND OF

ELECTRIC

An SUV built for real life, the Leapmotor C10 REEV blends electric efficiency

with petrol-backed range. We took this tech-forward car for a drive from

Umhlanga to Salt Rock to see just how well it suits North Coast life.

Text: JENNIFER CAMPBELL

On the North Coast, driving

isn’t just about getting from

A to B. It’s about school runs

through Ballito traffic, family trips

to the beach, Umhlanga meetings,

and spontaneous weekends inland.

For many local drivers, the idea of

going electric is appealing, but range

anxiety and charging access still raise

questions. That’s where the Leapmotor

C10 REEV steps in – offering a driving

experience with built-in reassurance

for longer journeys.

This new SUV brings a practical twist to

the EV conversation, combining electric

drive with a petrol-powered range

extender, making it particularly well

suited to the mixed driving patterns

North Coast residents know well.

What makes REEV different

The Leapmotor C10 uses a Range-

Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV)

setup. In simple terms, the wheels are

driven by an electric motor, giving

you the smooth, quiet performance

EV drivers love. A small petrol engine

doesn’t drive the car. Instead, it acts as

a generator to recharge the battery

when needed.

For everyday local trips – from Salt

Rock to Ballito Lifestyle Centre or

school drop-offs and gym runs –

many drivers could operate largely

on electric power. But when the

weekend calls for a Midlands escape

or a longer highway journey, the

onboard generator extends total

range dramatically. It’s a practical

bridge between traditional petrol

and full electric, and for many South

Africans, that middle ground makes a

lot of sense.

Designed for modern family life

The C10 REEV arrives with the kind

of design and space that suits family

and lifestyle buyers. It’s a mid-size

SUV with clean, contemporary styling

and a cabin that feels more premium

lounge than utility vehicle.

Inside, the focus is firmly on

technology and comfort. A large

central touchscreen, digital driver

display, advanced driver-assist systems

and a full suite of connectivity

42 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga March 2026

GETBALL0326pg042.indd 1

features make it feel future-forward

without being overwhelming.

There’s generous cabin space and

a comfortable ride quality, ideal for

coastal commuting and longer road

trips alike.

Quiet performance meets

coastal cruising

One of the standout qualities of

electric drive is refinement, and

that’s immediately noticeable in the

C10. It delivers smooth, near-silent

acceleration, which feels especially

fitting on relaxed coastal routes and

residential estates. Stop-start traffic

becomes calmer, and open-road

cruising feels effortless.

The elevated SUV ride height also

suits the varied road conditions

drivers encounter between estates,

town centres and highway stretches.

A practical step toward an

electric future

Charging infrastructure is growing in

KZN, but it’s not yet everywhere, and

that’s part of what makes the REEV

concept appealing right now. You

can plug in and enjoy electric driving

benefits where convenient, but

you’re not dependent on charging

networks alone.

For environmentally conscious drivers

who want to reduce fuel use and

emissions without changing their

lifestyle or travel freedom, this model

offers a realistic transition path.

Why it fits the North Coast life

North Coast buyers tend to look

for vehicles that balance lifestyle,

value, technology and reliability. The

Leapmotor C10 REEV speaks directly

to that mix. It’s modern without

being experimental, efficient without

being restrictive, and premium

without pushing into ultra-luxury

pricing territory.

With North Coast drivers often quick

to explore new lifestyle trends, it’s

natural that electrified vehicles are

entering the conversation. The C10

REEV certainly presents one practical

interpretation of what that transition

could look like.
