MY

NORTH

ZEALAND

In North Zealand,

life naturally finds a

slower rhythm

Perhaps because the landscape and nature insist on it. North

Zealand is only an hour’s drive from Copenhagen, yet the mental

distance takes you much further away.

It is a refuge that pulls us away from inboxes, printer queues

and spreadsheets. The forests, the coastline and the small towns

open like tranquil spaces where everyday life can wait for a while.

North Zealand is a place that feels instantly familiar – yet full of

discoveries waiting to surprise you. Pastel-coloured, thatched and

cosy. Gilded and grand. Raw and authentic – and everything in

between. Here the sky feels higher, and there’s room to unwind.

At the same time, you’ll find pockets where time stands still and

life shows its patina. Windswept and polished at once. A place

where you can be yourself, whoever you are.

Along the coast, you’ll find a special calm that has drawn people

here for centuries, seeking fresh air and the sea. Mornings begin

with people wandering to the beach in their robes, where small

moments become big ones. Inland, forests, lakes, and trails offer

space for your thoughts to roam. Here you’ll also find some of

Denmark’s major cultural attractions, ready with powerful history

and world-class art.

Whether you seek adventure or reflection, North Zealand offers

space. Space to feel yourself – or to lose yourself for a while, and

perhaps discover something new along the way.

There’s nowhere you have to be – only places you’ll want to linger.

Welcome to North Zealand

HILLERØD, FREDENSBORG AND FREDERIKSVÆRK

NORTH ZEALAND

– A ROYAL RETREAT

Power, prestige, and royal pastime

For centuries, North Zealand has served as a sanctuary for Danish monarchs

— a place where kings and queens came to hunt, unwind, and enjoy life.

The royal legacy is still visible everywhere: from Denmark’s second-largest

national park, National Park Royal North Zealand, and the King’s meticulously

designed hunting grounds now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to

the gunpowder town of Frederiksværk and the grand castles in the historic

towns of Hillerød, Fredensborg, and Helsingør.

Here, the castles of North Zealand bring Denmark’s cultural heritage to life,

offering insights into 500 years of history — from the rise and fall of

absolute monarchy to the country’s path toward modern

democracy and constitutional rule.

Even today, North Zealand remains a royal haven. Each summer, visitors

are granted a rare glimpse behind the gates when the Danish Royal Family

opens the doors and gardens of Fredensborg Palace to the public.

Welcome to Frederiksborg

– the largest renaissance

complex in the Nordic region

CASTLE, EXHIBITIONS AND CASTLE GARDENS

Frederiksborg is located in the centre of Hillerød. It used to serve as a favorite

residence and refuge outside Copenhagen for many kings in the past. The kings would

come here to hunt in the woods of St. Dyrehave and throw grand balls at Frederiksborg

– which is precisely why the King's Road (Kongevejen) was built from Copenhagen to

Hillerød, so the royals could travel straight from their everyday life and seek recreation.

Frederiksborg stands tall in the centre of a the castle

by a landscaped, baroque garden, that

includes King Frederik II's bathhouse castle from 1580

and the Norwegian-inspired cottage of Countess Danner,

wife of King Frederik VII. The look of Frederiksborg

changes with the weather. On calm days, it is reflected

in the lake, while on foggy days, you can only just make

out the spire and masonry. And on a snowy day, Frederiksborg

looks like something out of a fairytale.

A Royal

Retreat

FREDENSBORG PALACE

& BAROQUE GARDEN

Fredensborg Palace, King Frederik IV's palace

dating back to 1722, is one of the royal family's most

frequently used residences and a favoured retreat

for the royals. You can visit the impressive palace

garden year-round. In the month of July, you can

also get an exclusive look into The Reserved Garden

- the royal family's private garden – and join a

guided tour of the royal chambers.

"The house is inhabited by joy and love." This is how HM Queen Margrethe

once described the spirit of Fredensborg Palace. Throughout history,

the palace has been a gathering place and a retreat for the royals, and

it still is today. The Danish royal family resides here much of the time

between late spring and autumn, and it is the venue for major royal

family events – birthdays, christenings, confirmations, and weddings.

The World Has Passed Through Fredensborg

Fredensborg Palace reached its heyday during the reign of King Christian

IX and Queen Louise – known as the “in-laws of Europe” due to their

children marrying into royal families across the continent. During

the summer months, the royal couple gathered their international

family at the palace, and over the years, foreign dignitaries such as

Winston Churchill and Barack Obama have also visited. Fredensborg

has frequently served as the setting for official state visits, where it

is tradition for distinguished guests to etch their signatures into the

palace windows. Every July, visitors can get a closer look at this rich

history when the palace opens for guided tours.

Experience an Exclusive Visit to the

Royal Family Garden

Adjacent to the palace is The Reserved Garden, the royal

family's private garden. Both HM Queen Margrethe and

the late Queen Ingrid have put their marks on the garden

with perennial beds and colourful, flowering bushes

and trees. The garden also features the royal family's

playhouse, where King Frederik and Prince Joachim

played as children. During the month of July, you can

get the unique experience of visiting The Reserved Garden,

including the orangery, and the historic kitchen

garden, which supplies fresh flowers and vegetables

to the court.

Denmark’s Largest Historic Garden

The palace garden stretches across 120 hectares, featuring

baroque avenues, sightlines toward Lake Esrum, and

18th-century sculptures. It has been carefully restored to

reflect its original grandeur, allowing visitors to experience

the garden much as it was centuries ago. A standout attraction

is the “Valley of the Norsemen” (Nordmandsdalen), where

70 sculptures of Norwegian and Faroese farmers and fishermen

offer a rare royal tribute to everyday people. Open year-round,

the palace park is considered one of Scandinavia’s finest examples

of baroque landscape design. Following an extensive restoration, it

was honored with the European Heritage Award.

A great place to start and end this route is in Nivå. The town is easy to reach,

and you can bring your bicycle with you on the Øresund train.

Nivå has a harbour, a beach and holds a great appeal for culture lovers. Don't

miss the Nivaagaard Collection with European Baroque, Renaissance and

Danish Golden Age art, and consider a stop at Nivaagaard Brickworks Ring

Kiln – a piece of Danish industrial history. From Strandvejen, the coastal

road, you can see the old clay pits, where in the past clay was dug for bricks

and were fired in the ring kiln. The bricks were sent to Copenhagen, where

they were used for the Grundtvig church. Today, the claypits have been transformed

into lakes and a recreational area with trails and nature playgrounds.

The route continues along the coast to Sletten Harbour, where you will find

old fishermen's houses and a charming setting.

Visit the Palace

Next stop is Fredensborg, where you should naturally visit Fredensborg Palace Gardens.

If the Royals are in the palace, there will be guards in the sentry boxes, and you might be

lucky enough to witness the changing of the guard, sometimes accompanied by music.

Park your bike and take a walk behind the palace. If you have time, visit Nordmandsdalen

and return to the front of the palace via Skipper Allé. Before leaving Fredensborg, be sure to

refuel with food and drink at one of the cosy cafés on the pedestrian street, Jernbanegade.

Continue along the Palace Garden and Skipper Allé to Esrum Lake. Sørup, by the lake, is a

popular destination, and it's hard to resist the ice cream or food while enjoying the view of

When you visit Frederiksværk, which is beautifully

a story to tell about its past as Denmark's

first industrial centre.

In the first part of the 18th century, the farmers at

Arresø Lake complained that the lake flooded the

fields. Therefore, King Frederik IV saw to it that a canal

was dug, and with it came the industry that utilized

water power for production. In the 1750s, the cannon

foundry and gunpowder factory were built, and the

area got its name - named after King Frederik V. The

success attracted several industries, and companies

in Frederiksværk have been proud producers of

The Gunpowder Works Festival

May 2nd

Sail along with

the M/S Frederikke on Arresø lake

May 2nd - September 26th

CULTURE

Frederiksværk is a unique place for all history

buffs, and the opportunities to delve into history

are almost inexhaustible. Many of the old industrial

buildings are still standing, and the somewhat

crude and different architecture gives the town

and its surroundings its special mark.

KRUDT - THE POWDER WORKS MUSEUM

Gjethuset

– culture all year round

With over a hundred events a year, Gjethuset

is one of North Zealand’s largest culture centres.

For over thirty years, the old cannon foundry has

served as a venue for concerts, shows, theatre, art

and conferences. The building itself is an architectural

jewel, with thick stone walls, visible beams

and a unique atmosphere. Gjethuset is definitely

a place to visit for the whole family. Check out

Gjethuset’s programme and get inspiration for

your next cultural experience.

TAKE A

GUIDED TOUR

The Frederiks Vaerk Museum of

Industry offers guided tours and city

walks. During summer, you can explore

the Powder Works area for free or go

on a city walk in Frederiksværk with

the 'Useeum' app.

Gunpowder and cannon balls

At KRUDT- The Gunpowder Works Museum, you are taken back to the

time when the town produced gunpowder, and you can see why the work

was a dangerous occupation. The risk of explosions was huge, and

therefore the landscape has protective ramparts and tall trees

whose macabre function has been to catch fragments from

buildings and torn limbs when something went wrong. If you want

to know more, you can listen to a new and exciting podwalk that

talks about the dangerous work of producing gunpowder. The entire

gunpowder works area is an exceptionally well-preserved cultural

environment, to such an extent that in 2007, Frederiksværk was given

the status as one of Denmark's 25 finest industrial historic sites.

ARSENALET

From farming to an industrial centre

Frederiksværk is Denmark's first industrial town, which grew

during the 1900s with the production of cast-iron and steel.

If you want to know more about the exciting history, you

must visit the Frederiksværk Museum of Industry in the

Arsenal. This museum shows everything about Frederiksværk's

development through 250 years and introduces you to

everything that has been produced in Frederiksværk over

time – from military products such as gunpowder, bullets and

bronze cannons to civilian production of iron goods such as

pots, mirrors, wood-burning stoves and central heating boilers.

GJETHUSET

In the Arsenal, you can also learn about the National Park

Royal North Zealand and find out, what you can

experience in this fantastic area.

M/S FREDERIKKE ON ARRESØ

NATURE

It is ideal to explore and experience Frederiksværk by water.

Rent a canoe at Frederiksværk Camping and sail out to either

Roskilde Fjord or Denmark's largest lake, Arresø. Along the

canal runs the idyllic Brede Creek path. It starts at Frederiksværk

Church, goes through Arresødal Forest and all the way

out to Arresø Lake. Stop at the bird viewing platform where you

might be lucky enough to spot the rare and colourful kingfisher.

You can also get on the tour boat M/S Frederikke. The tour

starts from the quay at Arresødalvej and goes through the

narrow canal and out onto Arresø Lake, where there is a view

of as many as five churches: Vinderød, Ramløse, Annisse, Lille

Lyngby and Kregme. If you go on an early trip in the spring,

you might even hear a nightingale. M/S Frederikke has both

ordinary sailing trips on weekdays and themed historical and

cultural sailing trips in the weekends.

Just outside the town, on the Arrenæs peninsula, lies Ågabet

Outdoor Center, where you can experience nature up close

– all year round. Canoe and kayak tours, outdoor activities, and

guided experiences for the whole family are offered here, with

a focus on community, nature, and tranquillity. It’s the perfect

place to feel Frederiksværk’s harmony between water,

forest, and fjord.

If you prefer solid ground beneath your feet, you can play a

round at Asserbo Golf Club – one of Zealand’s most beautifully

located courses, surrounded by woodland. Here, sport

and nature go hand in hand, and you can enjoy the game in

peaceful, green surroundings, with birdsong and the wind in

the treetops forming the day’s backdrop.

YOU CAN ALSO

SHOP

Shopping in Frederiksværk is a very special experience. The town

the canal and forest, and if you go to the popular shopping centre

shops and eateries all in one place.

The legendary Cannon Friday takes place on the last Friday in

June and the day is full of entertainment, music and fun for all ages.

THE DANISH

RIVIERA

RÅGELEJE BEACH

34

THE DANISH RIVIERA

Since the end of the 19th century, when fresh air was issued on prescription and

bathing suits would extend below the knee, generation after generation have

sought the very special atmosphere unique to the coast of North Zealand, also

known as The Danish Riviera. Small moments are big here, and memories are

created over raised glasses at the lunch table. People in bathrobes stroll down

to the beach, a cup of coffee awaits you, and life is great.

The seaside towns each have their very own identity. At the charming beach

hotels, a part af Danish cultural heritage, you will feel pampered and

enjoy "the good life."

The Danish Riviera is for everyone - and here's plenty of room and time for

relaxing in the dunes at some of the finest Danish beaches or go discover

the raw nature and the small and charming historical fishing villages.

THE DANISH RIVIERA 35

BY THE SEA

Some of Denmark’s most inviting and picturesque beaches are

found along the North Zealand coast. Pack your beach bag and

head for the Danish Riviera – where you’ll find the stretch of

sand that suits you best. Whether you’re after a lazy day in the

sun, a classic seaside holiday, fun with the waves and the wind,

a stroll by the shoreline, or a refreshing dip – the beaches are

there to enjoy all year round.

36

THE DANISH RIVIERA

LISELEJE

The town of Liseleje, with its half-timbered

houses and hollyhocks, is located near

Tisvilde Hegn. Near the village center,

you’ll find the beach with disabled-friendly

access to the waterfront. To the East

are two of North Zealand's most remote

beaches: Lille Kulgab and the clothingoptional

beach Stængehus, both have fine

dunes and ready to dive in water.

RÅGELEJE

Rågeleje Beach looks like a scene

from ‘Fawlty Towers' with its striped

beach houses , and the seaside

promenade is perfect for a stroll

along the coast with loved ones.

Enjoy a sunset view from the beach or

from the top of the grassy, heathercovered

hills of Heatherhill. When

the wind is just right, the beach is

popular with kite- and windsurfers.

MORE

BEACHES

HUNDESTED

Just a stone's throw from the town

and harbour of Hundested, you'll

find the Trekanten - a 300-meterlong

sandy beach. Enjoy the view of

Isefjord and the town of Rørvig to the

West. The beach is disability-friendly

with accessible restrooms and a ramp

all the way down to the water.

LYNÆS

About 2 km from Hundested you

will find the small the small village

of Lynæs Harbour. You can get to

the swimming area via the jetty

at the harbor but if you're more

drawn to having sand between

your toes, you'll find the beach

with child-friendly shallow water

right next to the harbour.

Rent kayaks and SUP boards at

Lynæs Surfcenter.

TISVILDELEJE

Tisvildeleje's unique hip seaside

atmosphere is the reason why the

town and beach have attracted

the big city's bohemians for

generations. Life is lived on the

beach, in the beach hotels and

summer houses, and the town

is full of charm, history and

attractions. On the beach, you

can see the small colourful beach

houses from the 20th century, and

Tisvilde Hegn offers experiences

in serene nature.

THE COLD PLUNGE

Winter swimming offers an instant boost

for both body and mind – and North

Zealand has several wonderful spots for

taking the icy dip.

The experience becomes even more

special when you can warm up afterwards

– perhaps in a sauna, at a cosy harbour

café, or at one of the seaside hotels

along the coast.

Good spots to try winter swimming:

• Lynæs Havbad

• Gilleleje Beach at Feibergsvej

SMIDSTRUP

Like a well-kept secret, Smidstrup

Beach hides behind the town's red

and black-painted summer houses.

You’ll find a pier and an area for

dogs, where pups are free to swim

and play without a leash. There

are grocery stores and cafes in the

village, and if you're looking for the

best ice cream, drive to the popular

Kollerødgård Ice Cream Shop.

GILLELEJE

There are two beaches in the old fishing village of Gilleleje.

To the east of the harbour, you will find Strandbakkernes Beach,

where the family can enjoy campfires and a bathing pier, and on

the other side, the West Beach with slightly deeper waters,

a wider beach and often more waves. With the harbour nearby,

you are always close to shopping, ice cream and restaurants.

HORNBÆK

The popular Hornbæk Beach is a wide sandy

beach with fine-grained sand, good water

quality, dunes that protect you against the wind,

and safe bathing conditions for both children and

adults. The shallow, crystal clear water is perfect

for families with children who love to play in the

water, and there is also a beach playground for

those who prefer to stay dry.

DRONNINGMØLLE

Dronningmølle Beach is high on the list of the best and most visited

beaches on the north coast with its fine-grained sand, shallow water

and small, sheltered puddles, where children can play, dig and splash

around. If you want to spice up the day with a drop of nature and

culture, you are only a short walk away from the nature area Rusland

and the Rudolph Tegner Museum & Statue Park.

NIVÅ

South of the cosy harbour lies

Nivå Beach, located in the wide

bay. Nivå Beach in a wide bay

with shallow water and good

swimming conditions for the

little ones. If you get thirsty,

hungry or are in the need of a

cold ice cream, you'll find it at

the harbour right next door. The

nature reserve Nivå Bugt Beach

meadow is a short walk from the

beach and offers a 20 hectare

bird sanctuary in beautiful

surroundings.

YOUR GUIDE TO GILLELEJE

The Fishing

Village at the Top

Follow the narrow and winding hilly streets from the old town of

Gilleleje down to the harbour. Here you feel the pulse of this charming

fishing village, with the sound of the masts rattling in the wind and the

screeching of seagulls overhead. Fishmongers write down the catch

of the day on their signs, and the old harbour buildings have been

converted into cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy life and a

great meal. The harbour is the pulsating heart of Gilleleje.

The old fishing village is also full of stories and plenty of seaside

experiences. At the harbour, you can experience everything that

makes Gilleleje so special.

NATURE

Explore the scenic area around the restored Søborg Lake. Hop on your bike and

try cycle route 33, which takes you along the lake with the option to continue

towards Hillerød or take the train back. If you prefer walking, the lake is easiest to

reach from Pårup or Græsted stations. On an islet in the lake, you’ll find Søborg

Castle Ruins, a royal castle dating back to the 12th century.

Take a walk along Gilbjergstien – the 2.5 km trail that leads from the western edge

of town out to the open, green landscape of Gilbjerg Head. From the steep cliffs,

the view over the Kattegat is truly breathtaking – here, you’re standing

on the very top of North Zealand.

If you prefer heading east, simply follow the path and the signs for Cycle Route 47

all the way to Nakkehoved Lighthouse.

The town also offers the chance to simply laze on the beach. The best beaches are

just east and west of the harbour, and so a good dip in the sea is always nearby.

At Veststranden and at Østmolen, you can relax on your beach blanket or just

jump straight in the water from the jetty. Bringing the kids? Be sure to visit the

playground, Stejlepladsen with its swings, climbing frame, sandbox, and more

more, in the middle of the harbour.

GILLELEJE HARBOUR

CULTURE

In Gilleleje Museum, you can learn more about the history of Gilleleje. Visit a fisherman's

house, see fishing boats, experience what school was like in 1920, and how a holiday

appartment looked like in 1950. The museum also has a special exhibition about the rescue

The Culture

You cannot visit Hundested without visiting polar explorer Knud

has far as possible, been perserved in its original state. There is a small shop

in the museum with souvenirs and books about Knud Rasmussen. It is also

worthwhile to slip down to the port to check it out. Hundested Sandsculpture

Park is an attraction where sculptors create art from the golden grains of

sand. If you drive east from Hundested and park your car, you can visit the

old fishing village Kikhavn, where the yellow and whitewashed houses are

preserved as they were 200 years ago. And in Torup, you can join guided tours

of the eco-village and gain insight into their unique, alternative lifestyle.

From May 14th to October 18th, Hundested

Sand Sculpture Park once again fills the

harbour in Hundested with sand sculpture art

created by the best artists from all over the

the world, delighting visitors of all ages.

THEME 2026:

"The Middle Ages!

You wouldn’t

believe it"

Here, you can explore the magnificent sculptures and be amazed by the

artists' ability to bring sand to life. The theme and exhibition change

annually, and after the exhibition period, the sculptures are returned to

piles of sand, which are recycled. The sand sculptures are designed to

withstand the Danish weather, and the exhibition is both outdoors and

indoors, allowing visitors to enjoy the impressive sculptures in any weather,

whether it's sun or rain.

Hundested Sand Sculpture Park began with the desire to create an attraction

that would bring life to the local harbour. It became a huge success, and

every year over 60,000 guests leave their footprints in the sand around the

sandsculptures of the park. This year promises yet another great program.

Unleash your creativity

Of course, you can admire the artists' masterpieces, but why not give it a

go yourself ? In the children's area, the whole family can try sand shaping,

sand painting, and treasure hunting.

You can enjoy a packed lunch at one of the many indoor and outdoor dining

areas or stop by the cosy Café Skipperstuen for refreshments.

Where animals roam free

Tothaven

Where the intersect roads to Kikhavn, Torup and

Hundested meets, you will find a thatched

farmhouse from 1796. Jakob, Pernille and their

two children live here, and run Tothaven visiting

farm. Tothaven is a sanctuary for animals and

families with children, with a café, a dairy and

a farm shop.

”We wanted to create a down-to-earth place, where

there's room for close encounters and soft education.

A place that is relevant, where families can get a

special experience that they will always remember.”

”Nowadays, kids rarely have grandparents who live

in the countryside. Often, they don't know what it

means to keep animals on a farm, and perhaps they

haven't experienced being this close to farm animals

before. They can try that here," Pernille continues.

During the 12 years that the family has lived on the farm,

Tothaven has grown. One pony turned into seven. Three dairy goats became

24. And then came along the pigs, the cats, the rabbits, the ducks, the turkeys,

the cattle, the sheep and a lot of baby animals.

'Hygge' and delights

When at Tothaven, don't miss out on tasting the farm's dairy products

– the silky smooth goat's yoghurt, the fresh cream cheese, and the firm goat´s

cheese called ’The Evening sun at Kikhavn’. Or try the ice creams, made with

the farm's own eggs and flavoured with homegrown plums and rhubarb.

In the café and in the courtyard with fig trees and hollyhocks, you can get

coffee, cake and the handmade goat's milk

ice cream, and in the charming café

garden, there is often live music.

At the picket fence the donkeys, Tom, Knut and Marie, along with the small

kunekune piglets, Uffe and Lasse bid you welcome.

At Tothaven visitor´s farm, you can make friends with the animals, pet the pigs,

cuddle baby rabbits and kittens and go for a ride on one of the farm ponies.

A different family experience

Many families make it a tradition to visit Tothaven every year. ”A lot of

activities for kids, like water parks and theme parks, are very intense and

high energy and calls for overstimulation,” says Jakob.

Before leaving Tothaven, drop by

the farm shop and bring one of the

award-winning goat's cheeses with

you. They taste the way that good

memories should taste.

EXCLUSIVE DESIGN

AND CRAFT

BY THE WATER’S EGDE

At the end of Nordre Beddingsvej, where the fjord meets the quayside, Bendix Copenhagen and

Backhaus Brown invite you into a world of gold and glass.

“Glass is our life and our shared passion. Nature is our source of inspiration in everything we do, and a dream

came true when in 2008 we opened a new glass studio at Hundested Harbour. Backhaus Brown’s location enriches

us with daily inspiration in the creation of unique and innovative glass design and the fjord and the volatility of

light align beautifully with the unpredictability of glass.” Andrew Brown & Nanna Backhaus Brown

At Bendix Copenhagen, we work to create a whole – a unique atmosphere of enthusiasm for great raw materials

and craftsmanship of the highest quality, as well as visual aesthetics and design. Our workshop is located by

the old harbor bed at Hundested Harbour, a unique and authentic environment, where the ocean just outside our

windows, in the finest way complements our jewellery and our work.

We look forward to welcoming you by the water’s edge” Goldsmith Christina Bendix

YOUR GUIDE TO LYNÆS

Catching the

Vibe in Lynæs

South of Hundested, sheltered by coastal cliffs at the mouth of the Isefjord,

lies Lynæs — one of Denmark’s oldest fishing villages. Every year, thousands

of sailing enthuasiasts dock at the cosy marina.

Lynæs offers experiences for the whole family. Around the harbour you’ll find

restaurants, a fishmonger, and an ice cream shop, as well as a playground

and an adventure jetty for children. There are barbecue areas, sea baths,

and two public shelters complete with firepits. During summer, the harbour

comes alive with activities and concerts – including Live i Lynæs, where local

musicians set the tone on selected Fridays. And of course, Lynæs is famous

for its water sports, steady winds, and great waves.

Lynæs – adventure and community in the old fishing village

64

LYNÆS

Lynæs Surfcenter

and Lynæs Madbar

Venture all the way out to the

southwestern tip of Halsnæs, and

you’ll find more than just a charming

fishing village – you’ll arrive at a

hangout for everyone who loves

life by the water, good food, and an

unmistakable atmosphere.

The steady onshore breeze and shallow waters

make Lynæs one of Denmark’s best surf spots,

perfect for kitesurfing, windsurfing, SUP

and kayaking.

At Lynæs Surfcenter, families with children,

surfers with boards under their arms, and

couples on weekend getaways meet and mingle

in the surf shacks or in one of the surf centre’s

stylish cabins. The beach buzzes with life:

a group of friends share a beer at the Strandbar,

while others find calm in the sauna overlooking

the fjord. The sourdough bakery tempts with

freshly baked treats, and the whole place strikes

a perfect balance between play and pause – that

mix is what makes Lynæs truly special.

A local community

Twin brothers Jeppe and Johan Ingversen

wanted to create a place where community

could thrive in a local setting. Ten years ago,

they started Lynæs Surfcenter – now a haven

for those who seek an adrenaline rush on the

water or simply want to slow down and breathe.

A place where everyone feels welcome – locals

and visitors, colleagues and holidaymakers alike.

Before the surf center opened, Jeppe and Johan’s

father ran a small grocery store on the same spot.

When it closed, the town lost a natural meeting

point where people used to chat about wind and

weather. Restoring that sense of togetherness

became essential to the brothers. Today, locals,

tourists, and members of a growing coworking

community gather here daily.

“That’s one of the things we’re most proud of,”

says Johan. “We’ve recreated the sense of community

the old grocery store once had – where

people meet naturally and form real connections

with those around them.”

Jeppe adds: “It’s all about atmosphere – and

being together. People should feel at ease and

have every opportunity to hang out, whether it’s

over a good meal at the Strandbar, a kayak trip,

or a full weekend in one of our tent houses.”

Winter mode

“Our goal is to make the surf center just as

great in winter as in summer,” Johan explains.

“That’s why our sauna and the Madbar stay

open all year. You can come and warm up after

a cold dip or enjoy a hearty meal while the

wind howls outside.”

The surf shacks and bungalows are available

year-round, and weekly saunagus (aromatic

sauna sessions) keep the cozy Lynæs spirit alive

– even through the colder months.

NATURE

Tisvildevejen – a Historic Hiking Route

The 77 km Tisvildevejen runs from Esrum Abbey to Tisvildeleje and

Helenekilde, where pilgrims in the Middle Ages sought healing. The

route leads you through a varied cultural landscape past Lake Esrum

and eight villages with accommodation in B&Bs, shelters, or unique

stays such as the hammock hotel at Tibberuphus.

You can book luggage transport, and at tisvildevejen.dk you will find

digital maps, a guidebook, and inspiration for guided tours. The trail

offers a unique mix of nature, culture, and history – a journey back in

time with modern comfort.

From Dot to Dot

The Yellow Quality Path

On this 7 km long route through Tisvilde Hegn, you'll experience

exerything from an abandoned village to castle ruins and unusual raw

nature. Experience how the sand drift has shaped the landscape and make

up fairytales as you dive into the eerie woods of the trolls (Troldeskoven).

Route starts here: Asserbo Castle Ruins, Bisp Absalons Vej 28,

Frederiksværk. If travelling by bus, get off at the stop

’Chr. E. Bartholdys Allé’, and walk 1 km to the path.

Route length: 7,2 km

Tip: Start your hike in Frederiksborg Castle Gardens – take the train

HIKING

THE

HALSNINO

The hiking route Halsnino, has quickly become a very popular 'nino'.

Maybe because of its amazing scenery, the varied landscape or just

because it's easy to jump straight on to the route directly from the train?

In any case, the Halsnino is a hike out of the ordinary. The Halsnino is

named after the municipality of Halsnæs through which it winds its way

– from Hundested in the west to Arrenakke in the north, to Denmark’s

largest lake, Arresø, and its woodland shores in the east, and from there,

south to Grimstrup at the foot of Strø Bjerge.

A varied route

The 53 km signposted route has it all: moraine hills, cliffs, beaches,

woodlands, meadows, lake shores, Bronze Age mounds, marshes, craters

and land stretches.

The Halsnino offers you a full variety in nature and landscape, flora

and fauna and last, but not least, peace and quiet. You can do walk

in one go, grab an overnight stay on the way, or do it in stages over

several weekends.

BICYCLING ROUTES IN NORTH ZEALAND

THE NORTH COAST BICYCLE ROUTE 47

Do you also love the feeling of the wind in your hair while you

experience the world around you by bike? Whether you prefer

tackling challenging mountainbike trails or would rather take the

kids with you on flat, wider paths, North Zealand has it all. Here are

just a few of the best bicycling routes to match your needs.

70

NATURE

Bring your bike on the train with you for free.

It is free to bring your bicycle on the local trains in North Zealand.

This way, you can start and end your bike ride where you wish.

For the mountain biker

If you enjoy high speed and a challenging ride,

bring your bicycle with you to Tisvilde Hegn,

where you'll find Zealand's longest MTB trail of

28 km. Take a break at Asserbo Castle Ruins, the

woods of trolls (Troldeskoven), Tisvildeleje Beach

or the abandoned village of Torup, which was

buried in the sand in the 1500's.

For the royalist

The 75 km Castle Route (Slotsruten) takes you past three royal castles:

Kronborg, Fredensborg Palace and Frederiksborg Castle, and takes you

through the beautiful Par Force Hunting Landscape in North Zealand,

listed on UNESCO´S World Heritage list.

ALTERNATIVELY

Bicycle Route 33 (27 km long) between Frederiksborg Castle

in Hillerød and Gilleleje Station will take you straight through

the beautiful castle gardens of Frederiksborg.

ALTERNATIVELY

For older kids, try the 5 km-long

MTB-trail in Laveskov.

the Queen's Route all through Fredensborg

municipality. Along the 40 km-route, you'll

experience nature, art and history in Kokkedal,

Nivå, Humlebæk og Fredensborg.

ALTERNATIVELY

Bicycle Route 32 (26 km) runs from Hillerød straight

to the beach in Tisvildeleje – one of the very

best beaches for swimming in Denmark.

For the explorer

If you love a long bike ride, choose the North Coast Bicycle Route

47. The route is 64 km long and taking you from Hundested to

Helsingør or vice versa. Experience seaside towns, an abundance

of restaurants and cafés, and spend the night on the route,

if you wish to extend the experience.

known as Fjordstien. It's a quiet and idylic route via Hundested-

Frederiksværk-Frederikssund-Roskilde-Holbæk-Kongsøre- Rørvig.

Split the route over several days or weekends, or spend

the night in a cabin or a hotel along the route.

For families

Bringing the kids? Then choose Parforce 105 (10 km), a route that takes

you through Grib skov Forest. Experience the UNESCO World Heritage

listed landscape, Frederiksborg Castle, Ottevejs krydset, an eight-way

junction, and Smørstenen, a large granite boulder, and pass by Nødebo,

south of the Bassebjerg cabin where you can see protected orchirds

in the bird sanctuary.

ALTERNATIVELY

For older children, try the Parforce 110 route (15 km), which goes through

the Great Deer Park (Store Dyrehave), past the Island of Imagination

( Fantasiens Ø) and the Baroque Garden at Frederiksborg Castle.

The highlight of the ride is Kongestenen with its compass stone,

where you can rest and dive into history.

A Gateway

in Nature

The abbey is a great starting point for a trip

to the National Park Royal North Zealand,

which offers plenty of nature adventures in

the North Zealand landscape.

A Nature Playground

The big nature playground invites the

youngest visitors back to village life as it

was in the Middle Ages, with noble men at

the chief´s farm (Stormandsgården).

There's a zip line and a sensory swing.

Crawl around in the old herring barrels or

climb on the pigs at the farmer's house. The

Nature Playground is free

and it's open 24/7.

For instance, take bicycle route 48 past

impressive castles, hike on the trail

Tisvildevejen or do the orientation run in the

northern part in the forest of Gribskov.

Free access to the statue

park all year round

”In the summer of 1916, we took

long bike rides through North

Zealand and one day, we came

upon a giant hill. In the middle

of smiling, summery Denmark it

stood out like a harsh Siberia...

This was the place"

In his autobiography "Towards

the Light," Rudolph Tegner

describes how he found the

land the museum is built on.

SCULPTURES

IN RAW NATURE

RUDOLPH TEGNER MUSEUM & STATUE PARK

Rusland, as the area around Dronningmølle is called, is a fantastic and unusual

landscape. It is also where the sculptor, Rudolph Tegner (1873-1950), placed his

museum and its surrounding statue park. Visit the museum in the park and be

inspired by the combination of art and its unique raw nature.

An Extraordinary Museum

An octagonal room opens up like a cathedral 11 meters high

to the ceiling, and where you can experience 300 of

Rudolph Tegner's poetic and masculine sculptures in

plast, clay, marble and bronze. The museum that is

an early modernist concrete building, provides a

valuable insight into the sculptor's collected works

in terms of symbolism, vitalism and classicism.

Experience the Statue Park

Outside, in the park, you will find 14

bronze statues in perfect unison with

the changing seasons, the heather

hills and the skies, and in the summer,

sheep graze between the statues.

Kids can go on an art treasure hunt,

climb trees or learn how to draw.

Axis Mundi By photographer Frida Gregersen

Special exhibition in the Statue Park

For a year, Frida Gregersen has

photographed the Statue Park each

exactly where they were created.

Here, nature, body and sculpture

merge in the park’s shifting light.

Evren Tekinoktay

Special exhibition in the museum

Evren Tekinoktay creates a poetic meeting

of myth, form and colour. In dialogue

with Tegner’s monumental sculptures, she

unfolds a contemporary and playful universe

where seriousness meets humour.

NATURE

As you gaze over the wide expanse of the protected beach meadows and

the elongated bay towards Øresund, the hills and forest areas around the

creek valley and the old clay pit lakes inland, you quickly realise that Nivå

is a very special place indeed. Birds and other animals thrive beautifully

here and you can clearly sense the historical significance of the area.

Johannes Hage, who founded The Nivaagaard Collection, bequeathed his

fortune to a foundation, which has since protected part of the bay here in

Nivå. Over 200 species of birds can be found in this the only open nature

area on the east coast of North Zealand where wading birds can rest

during their migration paths to the south and to the north.

Nivå Beach is a lovely sandy beach with shallow waters and a cosy

marina just around the corner.

THE CLAY PIT LAKES

CULTURE

Culture, art and nature are closely intertwined in Nivå, and an area that

exudes a lot of history. Surrounded by nature, The Nivaagaard

guided tours, family events, workshops, nature walks and communal

dining in the café.

In the backyard of the museum, you'll find Nivaagaard's Park and

COLLECTION

Discover female artists before 1700,

old masters and modern art

Nestled between the Øresund coast and protected meadows you will find

the Nivaagaard Collection – a small, exquisite museum often described

as one of North Zealand’s hidden gems. Its founder, Johannes Hage

(1842–1923), envisioned a place of quiet

contemplation and artistic pleasure:

“A small and exquisite collection

The museum presents

500 years of European art

history – from the Italian Renaissance and Dutch Baroque to the Danish

Golden Age. Surrounded by a beautiful rhododendron park, it offers both

tranquility and inspiration in equal measure.

In 2025, the museum expanded its collection of early female artists.

Alongside Sofonisba Anguissola and her sister Europa, visitors can now

experience works by Catharina Ykens II and Artemisia Gentileschi’s

Susanna and the Elders – a recent acquisition that attracted attention and

a visit from The Sunday Times, establishing Nivaagaard as one of Europe’s

foremost collections of female artists from before 1700.

More than just a museum, Nivaagaard is a vibrant meeting place where

art and nature intertwine. Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy lectures,

concerts, guided tours, drawing courses, nature walks and family activities.
