A school of two halves
College in limbo over funding hurdle
BY DANIEL ALVEY
“A complete breakdown in
common sense.”
That is how Ellesmere College
principal Antony French
is describing the Ministry of
Education’s delay in funding the
next stage of the college’s $55
million rebuild.
Construction of the first three
learning hubs, along with an
auditorium and a creativity and
innovation hub, is expected
to be completed in the coming
months. The full rebuild was
originally planned to finish in
about 2028.
But French said the remainder
of the school, which
includes a gymnasium, library
and admin and learning support
block, has “stalled” while
waiting for the final stage to
gain funding approval.
He had heard rumours of
a possible slowdown late
last year, and his fears were
confirmed after a meeting with
ministry officials last week.
“Redevelopment, disappointingly,
has stalled,” French said.
But the Ministry of Education
and Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg
rejected the idea the project had
“stalled”.
It has been almost seven years
since the then-Labour government
announced the rebuild in
2019 at a cost of $30m.
Ellesmere College principal Antony French is disappointed he may have to use ageing classrooms while work on the college’s
rebuild looks to have stalled.
PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY
The current Government
reaffirmed its commitment in
2024, with the cost rising to $55m,
and the project broken into stages
with work starting in late 2024.
Although French said ministry
officials had given him
“assurances” the rebuild will
continue, he said he was given
no timeline.
“Despite their assurances
that they still want us to be
redeveloped, it was pretty
obvious we are not part of the
priority list.
“At best, it could
be a couple of
years, but realistically,
we could
be looking at five
years or longer,”
he said.
Grigg and
Ministry of
Education
Nicola Grigg
regional property
operations general manager
Gary Anaru said the project
was only waiting on funding
approval for the final stage.
Said Grigg: “Any suggestion
that the project has stalled or
that earlier commitments have
been broken is incorrect.”
French was told a business
case for the next stage was likely
to be assessed in May and could
possibly go to Cabinet in July.
He said the ministry officials
he met with were “not
confident” it would get approval
this year, and only slightly more
confident about funding next
year. After that, the project
may require redesigning and
reconsenting.
Rising population drives increased
demand for ambulance service
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Demand for an ambulance in
Selwyn has steadily increased
over the past five years.
The latest data from Hato
Hone St John shows calls to
Rolleston’s ambulance station
rose 55%, from 2835 in 2020 to
4407 last year.
St John Mid Canterbury area
operations manager Ian Rex
said the rise reflects the district’s
growing population.
“Hato Hone St John is also
seeing broader national trends,
such as an ageing
population, that
are contributing
to higher call volumes,”
he said.
Nationally, St
John callouts
have more than
doubled, increasing
110% from
35,219 in 2020 to
74,072 last year.
Ian Rex
Despite the surge, Rex said St
John is keeping up with demand.
“Since 2020, we have reviewed
and adjusted our ambulance
resources to respond to these
changing demand patterns in
Rolleston and the wider Selwyn
area,” he said.
“We are actively monitoring
our emergency call volumes and
response times to ensure we are
meeting community needs, and
will continue to consider further
Calls from the Rolleston ambulance station have increased 55% in five years.
resource adjustments as demand
evolves.”
Rex said Selwyn has nine
emergency vehicles, including
ambulances, rapid response
units, and operations managers
who work as a co-ordinated
network.
In Rolleston, the top reasons
people called for an ambulance
last year were chest pain (584
incidents, up from 529 in
2024), referrals from health
practitioners (578, up from 551),
breathing problems (467, up from
385), falls (355, up from 322), and
feeling generally or medically
unwell (306, up from 292).
Leeston’s ambulance station
saw a slight drop in callouts,
from 770 in 2020 to 670 last year.
Breathing problems topped
the list (96, up from 93), followed
by health practitioner referrals
(81, up from 73), chest pain (78,
down from 92), feeling generally
unwell (63, up from 56), and falls
(49, down from 60).
Darfield’s numbers have
remained largely steady, with 737
calls in 2020 and 724 last year.
The most common reasons
were chest pain (91, up from
86), health practitioner referrals
(85, down from 91), falls (61, up
from 54), people unconscious or
passing out (55, up from 41), and
breathing problems (54, down
from 61).
In brief
Close call after dryer fire
A fire in a clothes dryer at the
Southbridge Hotel could have
been much worse if not for
the quick actions of staff. The
Southbridge Volunteer Fire
Brigade was called to the hotel
last Monday afternoon. Fire
chief Shane King said the blaze
had already been extinguished
by staff when crews arrived.
King said the exact cause was
unknown, but it served as a
timely reminder to regularly clean
lint traps and avoid overloading
dryers.
Campground deliberately
damaged by vehicles
Part of Coes Ford Campground
had to be closed for several days
after it sustained intentional
damage yesterday at around
4.30pm on Wednesday last week.
The council said several vehicles
deliberately damaged the grass
by doing skids. Old furniture,
rubbish, and a burnt-out structure
were also dumped in the Selwyn
River. “If you witness any damage
or antisocial behaviour, please
report it to Council on 0800
SELWYN (735 996),” a council
spokesperson said.
Unattended fire warning
The Lincoln Volunteer Fire
Brigade is reminding residents
not to leave burn piles unattended
after crews were called to a fire
on Moirs Lane last Wednesday
morning. Deputy fire chief Tim
Quinlivan said any rubbish fire
must be attended at all times.
Delay leads to growing maintenance bill
› From Page 1
French said he was not
concerned about the rebuild
being staged, but he expected the
stages to follow consecutively.
Grigg said the Government
was committed to delivering the
current stage.
“The remaining stages of
the planned redevelopment,
replacing the gym,
administration block and
whare, are designed and
consented but are yet to be
budgeted for.
“Due to the scope of the
redevelopment of Ellesmere
College, every stage of funding
has to go through
Cabinet,” she
said.
Anaru said
the next stage
is progressing
through the
standard
government
capital
investment
process that
applies to all major school
redevelopments.
Gary Anaru
“The final stage requires new
funding and is moving through
the normal business‐case and
Cabinet‐approval pathway. A
decision is expected by the start
of the new financial year in
July,” he said.
In the meantime, French said
the ministry has instructed the
school to use its maintenance
budget to keep its existing
classrooms – many more than
An artist’s impression of how the redevelopment of Ellesmere College will look upon completion.
50 years old – functional.
“We are going to have to
spend that on buildings that
leak and are cold.
“They are trying to renovate
something that is beyond fixing.
That’s not cool,” he said.
Anaru countered that
spending on maintenance was
not a “waste of money”.
“These buildings remain
in use, and maintenance is
essential to keep students and
staff safe, warm and dry until
“They are trying to
renovate something that
is beyond fixing. That’s
not cool.”
Anthony French
their replacement facilities are
built,” he said.
French said last year, for
example, the school spent about
$3000 fixing a blocked toilet
after one of its ageing clay pipes
collapsed.
Alongside ongoing maintenance,
the school also has to
spend more to keep the new and
old buildings connected through
fire alarm and internet systems.
At the same time, the college is
also dealing with high enrolment
growth. French said they started
this year with 512 students and
are already up to 588.
He also expressed concerns
that having the school split in
two could increase the stigma for
students accessing learning support
or counselling services.
The college also gave up
much of its green space to
accommodate the rebuild. That
space was meant to be returned
once the old classrooms were
demolished, but with the
buildings now set to remain
longer than planned, that too is
uncertain.
Work on Gerald St on Saturday
was a one-off to catch up
and complete the footpath outside
the medical centre, which
could not be finished during the
week due to it being a high-traffic
area.
Lincoln Hammer Hardware
owner Manny Singh said he was
disappointed it will not be happening
more often.
“More weekend work will be
beneficial in the long run
so they can get the job
done quicker.”
Since the roadworks
started in October, Singh
has had to lay off a staff
member after the number
of daily customers
dropped from 135 to
between 25-35.
"It’s a shambles,” he
said.
is no work for them.
ISushi owner Hog Yu has
cut back his 10 staff members’
hours.
Weekend work was raised
ago. But council staff are yet
to say how stage one, which is
expected to be finished by the
end July, could be sped up.
The council did not respond
to questions from Selwyn Times
about its progress on accelerating
the work. Fulton Hogan also
would not answer questions,
referring Selwyn Times to the
council.
Among the restrictions the
council has to consider for
weekend work is the
noise level of the roadworks.
Under the District
Plan the noise cannot
exceed an average of 70
decibels between 7.30am
and 6pm, Monday to
Saturday, or 80 decibels
from 7.30am-6pm with a
maximum of 80 decibels.
The level drops to an
average of 55 decibels on
Sundays and public holidays.
When the council awarded
the contract to Fulton Hogan, it
did not dictate what the hours
of work should be, only the
completion date.
Work on Gerald St on Saturday was a one-off to complete footpath upgrades and catch up.
Since the work has started,
extra signage has been added
to help people navigate the
roadworks.
But despite the signage, Singh
said he was still getting feedback
from customers finding it
hard to navigate.
"It is still not visible to anyone
where to go or where to park.”
Prior to the work on Gerald
St starting, the council installed
two off-street carparks, one on
Gerald St and one between Lyttelton
and William St, which
people could use in place of the
on-street parking.
A council spokesperson said
Fulton Hogan has a site office
on Gerald St and is regularly
checking in with businesses to
see what can be done.
Yu appreciated the regular
visits, but did not think their
feedback was
being taken on
board.
“They listen,
but nothing
seems to change,”
he said.
Springs Ward
councillor Denise
Carrick attended
meetings held Denise Carrick
between the
council and businesses before
the project started last year.
“I don’t think people
(including the council) realised
how disruptive it was going to
be,” she said.
PHOTO: BARRY CLARKE
When completed, stage one
of the redevelopment will cost
about $10.4m and include a
plaza area to replace the angled
car parks outside shops.
It will also include new cycle
lanes, multiple pedestrian
crossings, and traffic lights at
the Gerald St and West Belt
intersection.
After stage one, work
is expected to start on a
major hospitality and retail
precinct, called Lincoln Village,
on the corner of Gerald and
Spike in copper wire thefts from
electricity network costs $512k
Changes to the
way pensioners
pay to ride buses
BY DAVID HILL
BY DANIEL ALVEY
There has been a big rise in
thieves risking electrocution
for a few dollars of copper.
More than 60 copper earthing
wire thefts have been
recorded by lines operator
Orion in the district over the
past two weeks.
“This is the largest increase
we have seen in such a short
period,” Orion electricity network
general manager Steve
Macdonald said.
Most of the thefts occurred in
Sheffield, Waimakariri Gorge,
Kirwee, West Melton,
Prebbleton,
Tai Tapu, Lincoln,
Burnham, Leeston,
Dunsandel
and Bankside.
Macdonald said
over the past six
months there has
been 173 copper
wire thefts
across the Orion
network.
Steve
Macdonald
The damage to the electricity
network has so far cost
Orion more than $512,000 in
the past six months, with a further
$125,000 in invoices still
expected for ongoing repairs.
“These figures do not include
the wider social and economic
impacts on the community, particularly
local businesses, that
experience disruptions and
outages as a result of some of
these thefts,” Macdonald said.
Copper earthing conductors
are a critical part of the network’s
safety system. The wires
run from the base of a power
pole into the ground and connect
to equipment such as the
transformers.
“When these earthing wires
are stolen, that safety system
is seriously weakened. This
increases the risk of electric
shock or electrocution to members
of the public, contractors,
and emergency services personnel
in the area,” he said.
Macdonald did not want
to speculate on the motives
behind the thefts. But he said
with the price of copper about
$14 a kilogram, it was not
worth the risk.
"Regardless of motive, it is
certainly misguided as the risk
far outweighs any reward.
“The majority of these incidents
involved the theft of
copper earthing conductors
from power poles.”
There has also been a handful
of incidents
involving thieves
cutting overhead
power lines.
“When overhead
power lines
are deliberately
cut down and stolen,
the remaining
lines can be left Rachel Walker
live on the ground,
creating an extremely dangerous
situation,” Macdonald said.
Canterbury rural area
More than
60 copper
earthing
wire thefts
have been
recorded
across the
district
in the
past two
weeks,
prompting
safety
concerns.
prevention manager, Senior
Sergeant Rachel Walker, said
police are aware of the spike in
thefts and line tampering but
did not say what steps were
being taken to investigate the
incidents.
“Members of the public
who observe damaged cable
infrastructure, including
cut earth wires, exposed
conductors, or loose cabling,
are asked to report this directly
to the power line provider so
that safety crews can respond
immediately,” Walker said.
If you notice damaged
power line infrastructure call
Orion on 0800 363 9898. Any
suspicious behaviour near
electricity equipment should
be reported to police on 111.
Pensioners can continue to show
their SuperGold cards to ride on
Environment Canterbury buses
for now – but a change is coming.
ECan is moving to the national
ticketing service, Motu Move,
where passengers will tap on and
tap off with a contactless debit/
credit card, watch or phone,
or the new prepaid Motu Move
card.
By the middle of the year, all
SuperGold cardholders will need
to link their card concession to
their contactless payment card,
device, or a prepaid Motu Move
card.
SuperGold cardholders
can travel on the Greater
Christchurch Metro network for
free after 9am on weekdays and
all day on weekends and public
holidays.
Said ECan national ticketing
system project lead Jeremy
Dickson: “Once linked to their
preferred payment method,
the concession will be applied
automatically when they tag on
to Metro buses and ferries during
SuperGold times, and there
will be no need to show their
SuperGold card.
‘‘Once Motu Move is fully
rolled out, we will have our
Metro teams out and about at
key locations helping customers
make the transition, including
linking concessions.”
Struggle of Sleep After 60
Alison had been struggling with
a problem shared by many Kiwis
over 60.
”I’ve never been one to sit
still,” she laughs. “There’s always
something happening, someone to
see.”
If she’s not down at her local
pool, Alison can often be seen
briskly walking around the park
with friends. The 64-year-old
has always been active. First to
organise a coffee catch-up, last to
leave a dinner party, the one who
remembers everyone’s birthday.
But lately, Alison was quietly
struggling with sleep. Her energy
would dip after a poor night,
leaving her exhausted, more than
she realised.
“When I don’t sleep well, I really
notice it,” Alison explains. “Without
good sleep, I struggle to keep up
with my activities. It starts to impact
everything.”
The pool sessions became harder
to face. Walking with friends felt
like a chore rather than a joy. She
found herself making excuses to
stay home.
“I was becoming someone I
didn’t recognise,” she admits. “The
woman who always said yes was
suddenly finding reasons to say no.”
Research confirms Alison’s
experience. As we age, our bodies
make less melatonin, the hormone
that tells us it’s time to sleep. Our
sleep becomes lighter and we wake
up more often. We also spend less
time in deep sleep, when the brain
cleans itself and the body repairs.
This creates three main problems:
trouble falling asleep, waking up
during the night, and feeling tired in
the morning even after hours in bed.
After searching for a natural
solution, Alison discovered Koru
Sleep at her local pharmacy.
“I was sceptical at first,” she
admits. “I’d tried other things that
promised the world and delivered
nothing. But the pharmacist said
customers kept coming back for
more, so I thought I’d give it a go.”
Unlike typical sleep aids that
just make you drowsy, this formula
works in three ways at once. Koru
Sleep helps calm the mind while
also helping the body make its own
sleep hormones.
The formula combines
passionflower and L-theanine to
quiet racing thoughts, while valerian
helps you feel naturally sleepy. It
also includes 5-HTP with vitamin
B6, nutrients that help the body
produce melatonin. Magnesium and
zinc support the deep sleep stages
when the body does its best healing.
“It relaxes me and helps me get
off to a good sleep,” Alison reports.
“When I don’t take it, I certainly
notice it takes longer and I don’t
wake as clear headed.”
For Alison, getting help with all
three parts of sleep has been lifechanging.
“When I have good sleep,
I’m able to do so much more,”
she reflects. “Household tasks,
gardening, being with friends,
keeping up with grandchildren.
Everything becomes manageable
again.”
She’s back at the pool three
times a week. The park walks have
returned. She’s organising dinner
parties again.
“I didn’t even realise quite how
exhausted I had been,” she adds.
“Finding something that actually
supports proper, restorative sleep
has given me my life back.”
From pushbike to paddle shift: Debbie’s
After 35 years, motor racing driver Debbie Chapman has hung up her helmet. Daniel Alvey reports
Debbie Chapman, 70, has decided it is time to hang up the racing overalls.
PHOTO DANIEL ALVEY
Debbie Chapman’s love of speed
began on the Huntsbury hills,
long before she ever climbed
into a race car.
“I liked going fast down the
hill on my pushbike to get to
school in Cashmere,” she said.
Now 70, the Tai Tapu resident
has decided to call time
on a 35-year racing career
that spanned classic racing,
endurance events and rally
competition.
An early crash did little to
dull her appetite for speed.
At about 20, Debbie broke
her cheekbone while driving
through Waltham in her
father’s Vanguard while on a
date with her now-husband
Dennis, who was uninjured.
“I knew it wasn’t anything I’d
done... The other driver came
around the corner sideways,
and I t-boned him.
“Dad was relieved I was still
breathing, but annoyed I’d written
off his car,” she said, adding
she did not get the keys to his
next vehicle.
About 15 years later, Debbie
got behind the wheel of a race
car for the first time.
“Dennis decided he wanted to
do some motor racing just out
of the blue. He was thinking if
he could get me interested, he
could do more.”
Already a stay-at-home mum,
Debbie said she did not want
to be left behind with their
four children by herself, so she
joined in.
Debbie did her last laps in a racecar at the SKOPE Classic with husband Dennis
and son Dale in matching Fiat Abarth X1/9s.
PHOTO: DANIEL ALVEY
“We were fortunate to either
get a nanny in or get my parents
to look after the kids while we
were away,” she said.
Outside of racing, Dennis is well
known for his various electrical
engineering business which have
funded their racing adventures.
The Chapmans are also known
for their home, a custom-built,
almost entirely off-grid, castle
perched on the hills above Tai
Tapu – where they have lived for
the past 13 years.
Over the years, Debbie became
a fixture on the classic racing
scene, competing in every SKOPE
Classic at Ruapuna Raceway from
1991 until her final appearance
earlier this month.
She began racing in an Alfa
Romeo 164, before moving to the
opposite end of the speed scale
with a Ferrari Testarossa.
She has also raced a BMW 318i
Supertourer and an Audi RS3 TCR.
Most recently, the Chapmans
became known for their matching
red-and-yellow Fiat X1/9
replicas, raced by Debbie and
Dennis, with son Dale joining
them in a third car.
final chequered flag after a life of speed
Of all the vehicles she drove,
Debbie said the Audi she raced
in the South Island Endurance
Series was her favourite.
“They are awesome to drive,
they were so easy to drive – paddle
shift.”
While she claimed several class
victories, her standout result was
a second overall at Invercargill’s
Teretonga Park in 2021.
“The best part was beating
Dennis, I finished second, and he
finished fourth. He usually beats
me, but I was so chuffed I got one
up on him,” she said.
Teretonga has also been the
scene of her biggest accidents,
rolling her Fiat twice at turn one
– once onto its roof and once all
the way over.
“I’ve got better on that corner, I
like to think,” she joked.
When not doing circuit races,
Debbie also competed in two
Targa rallies in 1995 and 1997.
She recalled a memorable car
swap with Dennis during the
1995 event.
“He thought swapping cars
would be safer, so he drove the
Testarossa, and I drove his Ferrari
348, and it did not go well,”
she said.
“He hit a power pole with the
Testarossa, and I put the 348
through a barbed wire fence.”
Debbie also competed in one of
the two Bathurst 24-hour races
held in 2002, sharing driving
duties in a BMW with Dennis
plus Lindsay and Scott O’Donnell.
Although she completed her
opening stints without incident,
the team failed to finish after an
overnight collision with a leading
car.
Despite not being behind the
wheel at the time, Debbie said
the announcers blamed her
because she was a woman.
While she still enjoys racing,
Debbie said the time felt right to
step away.
“I’m still enjoying it when it’s
going well, but I’m tending to
focus more on the things I’m
doing wrong.
“Like at SKOPE (this year) –
in both handicap races I was
meant to start on the second set
of lights, and both times jumped
the start.”
Although Debbie has retired,
Dennis plans to continue racing.
She said she is unsure how it
will feel to attend events without
racing.
Before her final SKOPE race,
she was approached by many
supporters.
“One guy came and said to me,
‘thank you for all your years of
entertainment’. I thought it was a
selfish sport.”
In her 35 years of racing, Debbie has driven a wide range of cars from a Ferrari 348 in Targa (bottom left) to her an Audi RS3
TCR which she took to a podium in 2021 (bottom right).
Implant brings a chance to hear, thrive
Today is International Cochlear
Implant Day – a celebration of
how technology can transform
lives, including that of Springston
toddler Evan Huyser
When routine newborn screening
raised concerns about Evan’s
hearing, it came as a complete
surprise to his parents, Anna
and Ryno Huyser. There was no
history of deafness in either side
of the family.
Initially, doctors suggested the
results could be due to fluid from
Anna’s C-section, but further
testing at Christchurch Hospital
confirmed Evan had significant
hearing loss.
Genetic tests later revealed both
Anna and Ryno were carriers of
a gene neither family had previously
known about.
Anna, an early childhood
teacher, remembers the early
weeks as a time of shock, but
also relief.
“It was a big shock when we
found out he was deaf,” she said.
“But it was nice to get confirmation
and to know the why.”
At three months old, Evan was
fitted with hearing aids. While
they helped, his audiological
profile meant he struggled to distinguish
between similar sounds
– hearing words like ‘ball’ and
‘fall’ as the same.
Concerned about the impact on
his language development, the
couple decided to pursue bilateral
cochlear implant surgery through
the Southern Cochlear Implant
Evan enjoying the playground, hearing every laugh and shout through his
cochlear implants.
Programme (SCIP) when Evan
was six months old.
The operation took about four
hours, with two hours dedicated
to each ear. The theatre team
called Anna and Ryno after completing
the first ear to reassure
them everything was going well
before moving on to the second.
“It’s an especially major surgery
on a small child like that,” said
Ryno, who drives a milk tanker
for Hilton Haulage.
“But they took us through all
the steps and how they do it. It
was really easy to just let them do
what they have to do.”
At Evan’s switch-on appointment,
when his processors were
activated, his reaction was simple.
“He just smiled,” Anna said.
Because he had experienced
some amplified sound through
hearing aids, the transition was
gentle rather than dramatic – but
the clarity was immediate.
Now two years old, Evan is
thriving. He calls his cochlear
implants “his ears” and has
embraced them as part of everyday
life.
Each morning he brings them
to his parents to put on, and he
has even learned to reattach
them himself if they fall off during
play.
His speech and language development
have progressed strongly
with the support of the SCIP
team.
“They are so impressed with
him. He’s almost in front of his
peers with his speech,” Anna said.
Evan is also comfortable choosing
when to wear his processors.
“Some days he comes down
and sits in front of the TV just not
wearing them,” Ryno said.
Anna believes he particularly
enjoys bath time without them.
“He associates the bath with
silence – his time to relax,” she
said.
The busy Springston toddler
loves trucks, playing outside,
dancing to music and swimming
at the aquatic centre – where he
can now wear a special aqua kit
to keep his processors on in the
water.
Throughout the journey, the
Huysers said the support from
SCIP has been invaluable. Regular
speech therapy visits, sign
language instruction at home,
and prompt help when equipment
needs replacing have given
the family confidence.
“The support we had after the
operation was exceptional. We
were so happy,” Ryno said.
ABOUT SCIP
• The Southern Cochlear Implant
Programme began operating in
2003 and today provides services
to 1128 adults and 272 children
with clinics in Christchurch and
Wellington, and with visiting
audiology services in other centres.
• Each year SCIP is funded by the
Government to provide implants for
60 profoundly deaf adults and 23
profoundly deaf children
• Covering three quarters of New
Zealand (by geography) and half of
the country by population, the SCIP
team provides outreach services
and end-to-end cochlear implants
services in homes, preschools and
schools in an ongoing relationship
with recipients, from referral to
post-implant care, over the lifetime
of the patient.
For families facing similar
decisions, their advice is simple.
“Just giving a child the opportunity
– it’s not something you
need to second guess or doubt,”
Ryno said.
Anna agreed.
“SCIP will be with you every
step of the journey. It was scary
in the beginning because it’s the
unknown, but if I think back
now, I’d do it again,” she said.
“It’s worth it – that chance for
him to hear and have speech.”
By sharing their story, the
Huysers hope to give other
families reassurance and
insight into cochlear implants
and the support available along
the way.
LETTERS
Huge public support for reducing
Arthur’s Pass speed limit to 30km/h
I am a bach holder in Arthur’s
Pass, spend extended periods
in the village, and am also a
committee member of the
Arthur’s Pass Association.
The danger imposed by vehicles
on the main street of the village
when it is packed with tourists
is a serious accident just waiting
to happen - people are regularly
crossing the street weaving
through trucks and other traffic.
The Outdoor Education Centre
– effectively a school with young
children – is also right in the
centre of the village.
Traffic entering the north
end of the village is routinely
well above the 50km/h at the
Punchbowl Falls parking lot.
There is often endangered
wildlife – a slower speed allows
more protection of these taonga.
I strongly support the proposal
for a 30km/h limit through the
central part of the village. At the
north end the 50km/h limit should
be moved back along HW73 to the
bridge so the downhill into the
village is at the slower speed.
A 80km/h limit between
Arthur’s Pass and Otira also
makes a lot of sense given the
diversity of wildlife along this
stretch of road, and that it will not
make a huge difference to travel
times.
- Bruce Davey
As a resident of Arthur's Pass
village, I would love to see the
speed limit lowered to 30km/h.
I have a baby and often walk
through the village with her, the
speed that vehicles and trucks
come through is very dangerous
and makes it hard for us to cross
the road, especially with the
stroller.
Also, with the amount of kea
around the store and café, they
are often hit by cars who don't
have time to react.
It seems a massive oversight
not to lower the village speed
limit.
- Lorna Luciani
I own a bach in Arthur’s Pass
and spend a couple of months
a year in the village. I wholeheartedly
support the application
to lower the speed limit on the
highway through the settlement.
The decision by New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi to not progress a proposal to drop the speed limit from 50km/h
to 30km/h in Arthur’s Pass Village has caused much consternation.
NZTA argues SH73 is a rural road,
and ‘there is no provision to set
a 30km/h limit in a rural road
classification’.
Obviously, where SH73 passes
through Arthur’s Pass it is not a
‘rural road’.
The outdoor education trust is
bustling with school groups, there
are streams of travellers crossing
the road outside the store, there is
wall to wall parking on both sides,
there are distracted trampers
picking up food supplies and
hitching rides.
The traffic includes many
articulated trucks travelling at
high speed, particularly when
coming downhill from the west.
And there are fatalities – I
believe the submission from
the Arthur's Pass Association
documented numerous deaths of
kea on this stretch of road.
- Alistair Woodward
For me, one of the main
issues is the huge number of
tourists (some oblivious to the
dangers) crossing SH73 at the
pinch point of the cafe/store and
the Alpine Parrot. It is narrow,
cars parked on both sides of the
road, cars reversing on to the
highway, poor visibility and a
massive number of foot traffic
movements.
My other major concern is that
the Outdoor Education Centre is
at one edge of this pinch point
with poor visibility coming over
the narrow Avalanche Creek
Bridge. This is where children
attending the OEC are at a high
risk from speeding vehicles.
- Fiona Neale
It is absolutely beyond belief
NZTA will not consider a speed
reduction through Arthur's Pass
township area under their own
“recreational reserve” category.
State Highway 73 runs through
the Arthur's Pass National Park.
It’s not just humans at risk.
Every year the community
mourns the loss of endangered
kea on this road.
These highly inquisitive birds,
who often wander onto the
highway in search of food or
entertainment, have no chance
of survival when confronted
by a large truck travelling at
50km/h.
So NZTA, we beg you to please
read these comments, open
your eyes to reality and be
prepared to think outside the
box before we lose one of our
own.
- Natalie Canton
No one needs to be in such a
hurry that they can’t slow down
for a few minutes.
- Hilary Wilson
I have been visiting the Pass
since the late 1940s and my
family owns a small bach there
from that era.
This is a ridiculous decision.
Why is the State Highway
bisecting our village, which also
acts as our local suburban street,
classified as a “rural road”?
The road is surrounded,
rather closely, by many cottages
and businesses, on both sides.
Those buildings are often sited
so closely to the road there is
no room for a footpath, or for
casual parking.
There is absolutely nothing
to suggest the road is a “rural
road”.
I suggest the cottages and
buildings are very much closer
to the carriageway than the
buildings in the settlements of
Kirwee, Darfield, Sheffield, and
Springfield the highway has
already traversed.
- Jonathan Everist
We definitely need a speed
reduction in Arthur’s Pass and
also a speed camera to ensure
compliance.
The village receives a huge
number of tourists who stop
to enjoy the attractions – for
example, last year 30,000 people
walked to the Punchbowl Falls.
In this respect we are similar
to Punakaiki, which now has
a 40km/h speed limit. Arthur’s
Pass is also a key rest stop
for travellers, with cafes on
opposite sites of the road a high
volume of pedestrians crossing
back and forth (much like
Sheffield, with its popular pie
shop, and the site of a recent
pedestrian fatality).
We have also had several kea
killed by vehicles.
The Outdoor Education Centre
is in the centre of AP village
and caters for groups of school
children. There is a school sign
but no school speed limit.
- Neil Smart, Arthur’s Pass
Association chair
Low hanging fruit
ideal for cutting
In response to your article in the
Selwyn Times February 18 regarding
minimising rates rises, Mayor Gliddon
and co are making a good start in
committing to their election promises
regarding this issue and following the
mandate they have been given by voters
after rolling the previous mayor and
resoundingly.
This has happened country wide
whereby wokeism is on the ropes.
While a good start there is much more
cost savings to be had. I suggest every
area of council comes under the microscope
including all the nice to have
and fluffy areas many of which benefit
nobody but those who hold and administer
these particular roles. HR would be a
good start followed by communications,
and a good look at the council DEI policy.
Risk and sustainability compliance
roles will present plenty of low hanging
fruit for cost cutting.
All employees should be scrutinised
and required to articulate their roles and
be held accountable against their KPIs
(I’m sure a lot won’t even have set KPIs).
While it takes time to identify the waste
and excesses and remedy the problem
a great start has been made but there is
much more to do here.
- Rodney Booth
I appreciate the efforts the new mayor
and council are making to keep rates
increases as low as possible.
So far the 6% is good progress, especially
when compared to the 13-14% the
previous council was planning for.
We are asked for suggestions on how
further savings can be made. An obvious
one is looking at the reported increase in
staffing costs in recent years.
Another I strongly suggest: Re-examine
the costs of the Lincoln main street
upgrade. In particular we do not need
traffic lights at the university corner.
There is a perfectly functional roundabout
which controls traffic flows
effectively. There is no way ratepayers
should be expected to fork out for the
convenience of a developer.
- Glenda Hicks
I nearly choked when I read the recent
article about Selwyn District Council
wages.
Obscene, overstaffed and overpaid.
An opportunity for the new council to
address efficiency, accountability and
most importantly affordability.
SPORT
Playing the long game: The man driving
Chris Brown arrived at Selwyn
United 13 years ago to develop
the skills of young footballers.
Now the 36-year-old is the
club’s director of football and in
charge of the men’s first team.
Sam Coughlan reports
How did you first get involved with
Selwyn United?
In February 2013 I went
to Perth, where Burnley FC
(from England) had set up a
programme (to attract talented
players to their academy).
In November that same year I
came to Christchurch with Lee
Padmore, who has since been at
Selwyn, the Wellington Phoenix
and a few other places.
When we arrived, everything
was centralised through
Mainland Football, so we
worked between Selwyn and
Waimak United to fill a gap.
A lot of players further out
felt they weren’t being seen or
didn’t have the time to travel in
for training.

What led to you staying with the club?
After just over a year, the
guy who was running the
Perth programme for Burnley
realised that the money in
New Zealand is not the same
as Australia. Following that
there was a decision to be made
– do we go back to the UK, do
we go back to Perth, do we try
something new?
We were picked up by Martin
Chris Brown is director of football at Selwyn United and also coaches the men’s first team.
Allen, who’s huge at Selwyn
and sadly passed away recently.
He sponsored Lee and I for our
visas with his own business.
Originally Lee was the
director of football and I worked
across the high performance
space – talent centres and skill
centres – but when Lee went to
the Phoenix (in 2018), I jumped
into the director of football role
and have been there since.
What do you do as head coach and
director of football?
The first team started their
pre-season alongside our
reserve team at the start of February.
It’s about coming up with
the model and the plan for what
we want to do going into the
season, getting players on board
and making sure the rest of my
staff are all aware of what we
want to do.
PHOTOS: HARRY LEWES PHOTOGRAPHY
In the director of football
Where were you before you came to
Selwyn?
I grew up in Cambridge, England,
and went to university
in Leeds, where I did a sports
I spent a couple of summers
coaching a 16th grade team at a
my local club Easton FC.
SPORT Selwyn Times, February 25, 2026 | 17
the growth of Selwyn United
Were you a player?
I was part of (Easton’s)
academy, but I worked out
pretty early I wasn't going to be
a pro.
I play socially when I can. I
play with a lot of our guys in
the summer football, seven-aside
competition at Selwyn – a
kickabout more than anything.
It’s nice to get playing and
afterwards we have a little drink
together as a group, so it’s that
social side of it as well.

Do you have a favourite team?
I grew up as a Manchester
United fan – in the 90s
everybody at my school was
a Man United fan. My dad is a
Tottenham fan and he tried hard
to make me one, but I followed
my friends.
I used to go watch Cambridge
United growing up and I had
a season ticket there. Now, I
probably follow the (Wellington)
Phoenix slightly more, just
because there’s Selwyn players
who have gone there so I’ll make
sure I watch those games.
I’ll always search for scores
for United. I might not be getting
up at 1.30am every weekend to
watch them, but every now and
again I will.

How much has Selwyn United grown in
recent years?
I believe we’re just behind
Cashmere Technical as the
largest club in the South Island.
We had close to 1700 members
last year, which is the most
we’ve ever had.
Brown (left) with All Whites defender Finn Surman in 2024. Surman played his
junior football at Selwyn before leaving to join the Wellington Phoenix.
PHOTO: HARRY LEWES PHOTOGRAPHY
Rolleston is growing, so more
families are moving in and more
kids want to play football. Our job
as a club is to make sure we can
provide football for everybody
who wants it.
When I first came out we were
based at Brookside Park and
that seemed like a lot of fields. It
became too small, so we moved
to Foster Park and thought, ‘look
how much space we’ve got’. Now
that’s getting a bit tight too – but
we make it work.
How much time a week do you spend
involved in football?
The director of football role is
40 hours a week, there are quiet
times and busier times. Some
weeks you might do 60 or 70
hours because things just have to
get done – time on the field, moving
goals, helping with kit, doing
admin.
Last year especially, when the
first team was struggling, my way
of dealing with it was to put more
hours in. That might be wrong,
”Last year especially, just
because the first team
was struggling, my way of
dealing with it was to put
more hours in. That might
be wrong, it might be right,
I don't know. ”
Chris Brown
it might be right, I don’t know.
It’s constantly football, football,
football.
Even when I’m not doing
Selwyn work, I’ll watch Premier
League or Champions League
games. My way of switching off is
still football, which probably isn’t
that healthy.

Your first team is back in the Southern
League (Selwyn were relegated last year
but invited to rejoin after Universities
withdrew) – how is preparation going?
You might say it’s organised
chaos at the minute.
Finding out we’re back in it,
with the first game on March 22,
it’s come around quickly. There’s
a lot of admin – players going
through drug seminars and betting
seminars – and we livestream
games, so we need someone to
commentate.
We’ve now lost two weeks of
pre-season, so we’ve got to hone
in and get going. Everybody’s
head is in the right space and
everybody knows where we
want to go.
Old foes set
to meet in
round one
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Waihora and Prebbleton’s local
rivalry will be starting early this
year with the two teams to meet
in the first match of the division
1 rugby season at Prebbleton
Domain on March 28.
Drawn in the same combined
country group, the Hoff Shield
– contested between the two
clubs – will be on the line. Current
holders Prebbleton claimed
it last year with a narrow 32-31
win.
Coleman Shield winners
Southbridge start their season
at home against Ashley, a week
before the club celebrates its
150th anniversary over Easter.
Darfield, runners-up in the
Coleman Shield final, begin the
season away at Hurunui, while
West Melton take on Kaiapoi and
Lincoln visit Oxford. Springston
will have the bye in the opening
round.
Burnham Dundsandel Irwell
(BDI) had applied to play in division
1 this season, but a lack of
front-row players has forced
them to continue in division 2,
which they won last year.
The first standalone Coleman
Shield round starts the following
week, with Waihora hosting
West Melton and Lincoln taking
on Springston on Thursday
night, followed by Southbridge
welcoming Darfield for their
anniversary clash on Saturday.
Hawke Cup beckons for
Country after near misses
BY SAM COUGHLAN
The match Canterbury Country
have been building towards all
season has arrived, with the
side set to take on Hawke Cup
holders Bay of Plenty at Bay Oval
in Mount Maunganui starting
Friday.
Country qualified by virtue of
winning the zone 3 qualifiers for
the upper South Island, and take
on a BOP side that won the cup
off Taranaki just two weeks ago.
“It’s what minor association
cricket is all about, really,” said
head coach Rob Frew.
“For the guys outside the main
centres throughout the country,
this is what we ultimately want
to play for and get a challenge
for, so it means an awful lot, it’s
what our season is all about.”
Frew expects the team to be
slightly light on experience
for the game, with fast bowler
Callum Cameron and spinner
Ronnie Kapur possible picks
for Canterbury in their Plunket
Shield match against Otago, starting
Saturday.
He said Weedons seamer Ed
Nuttall, who played 175 times
for Canterbury between 2012
and 2024, would likely make his
first Country appearance of the
season.
“He was injured before Christmas,
but he has been playing a
bit of club cricket and coming to
Former Canterbury seamer Ed Nuttall, now playing for Weedons, could make his first
Canterbury Country appearance of the season against Bay of Plenty. PHOTO: GETTY
training, so he should be getting
pretty close to full noise,” Frew
said.
Country last held the Hawke
Cup in 2023 before losing it to
Hawke’s Bay. Since then, they
have challenged for it twice, losing
to Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki
– just five runs short of winning
it back in the latter game.
Said Frew: “We’ve just got to
pull the positives out of the last
two challenges.
“We played really well at
Hawke’s Bay a couple of years
ago and we played really well
last year. We might be a little bit
less experienced this year, but
we’ve still got some older players,
which is great.
“So we will probably go in as
underdogs this time, but you
never know what could happen,”
he said.
Country will travel to Mount
Maunganui tomorrow ahead of
the three-day game starting on
Friday.
The winner of the two-innings
match will claim the Hawke
Cup, or if the game is drawn,
the team with the higher firstinnings
score will take home the
trophy.
Wigram to showcase British and
European automotive heritage
Are you excited to see a limitededition
Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato
Shooting Brake or perhaps an Austin
7? Canterbury is well-known for its
classic car enthusiasts, and Christchurch
is about to introduce an exciting new
annual event where you can spot
these incredible vehicles and more.
The inaugural Avid Classic Brit & Euro
Canterbury Car Show will take place
at the Air Force Museum in Wigram
on Saturday, March 7, 2026. This nonprofit
event is free for both participants
and spectators, thanks to the amazing
support from volunteers and the
generous sponsorship from Avid Group
Ltd and other sponsors.
Wigram is a historic venue with deep
motorsport roots. The Avid Classic Brit &
Euro Canterbury Car Show, which aims
to become a key tradition in the South
Island, will showcase and celebrate
British and European automotive
heritage. Organisers expect to see more
than 700 British and European cars and
anticipate attendance of up to 5,000
people.
Christchurch-born Rev Dr Richard
Waugh QSM helped establish the
Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car
Show in 2015 and, on his return to
Christchurch, instigated this Canterbury
community car show with a team of
volunteers and classic car enthusiasts.
Richard’s passion for cars and aviation
has been a lifelong interest, and it has
remained strong throughout his career.
He owns a 1954 Jaguar VIIM, and has
recently published a book about 1950s
Jaguars, following on from writing and
researching many books on aviation and
social history subjects.
Everyone is invited to attend this free
event, which will showcase cars of all
ages, from vintage classics to modern
British and European sports cars. Local
car clubs from Canterbury and South
Canterbury have pledged their support,
with vehicles coming from over 90 clubs
and groups. Both clubs and individual
owners are encouraged to register
their vehicles for display via the event’s
online registration system, which closes
very soon.
As a family-friendly community event,
there will also be food trucks and coffee
carts, along with plenty of space for
families to enjoy the day.
For off-street public parking on the grass
near the exhibition car display area, the
cost is $10 per car.
Organisers plan for this free event,
bringing together car clubs, enthusiasts,
classic car collectors, and the public, to
be an annual showcase of British and
European automotive culture for the
Canterbury region and beyond.
Whether you’re a seasoned classic
car enthusiast, a casual admirer of
European sports cars, or someone
seeking a fun day out with friends and
family, join us at the Avid Classic Brit &
Euro Canterbury Car Show on Saturday,
Is there less maintenance when you own
an electric or hybrid vehicle, since there’s no
traditional engine and fewer moving parts?
This is a common question, but the answer
may not be a simple yes or no.
EVs
Unlike traditional cars, EVs do not require
oil changes, spark plug replacements, or
exhaust system maintenance. This often
means lower routine servicing costs. However,
EVs are not maintenance-free. Regular tyre
checks are essential, as tyres may wear more
quickly on electric cars due to the heavier
battery weight. Suspension components
should also be checked, as Canterbury roads
have especially varied surfaces. Although
regenerative braking reduces wear, brake
systems still require inspection.
Hybrids
Hybrids with a combination petrol engine
and an electric motor still require oil changes
and engine servicing. You will also need to
have the hybrid battery system and cooling
components checked. Hybrid vehicles have
sophisticated electronics and may require
specialist diagnostic equipment to monitor
battery health and system performance.
The good news is that hybrid batteries are
typically built to last for many years, and
failure isn’t as common as most people
assume.
Modern vehicles
Regardless of whether they are electric,
modern cars rely heavily on their onboard
computers. Part of their regular servicing
requires software updates, sensor calibration,
and safety system checks. In the event of
windscreen replacement or repair, features
such as lane assist, adaptive cruise control,
and collision detection will require proper
calibration.
Regular servicing
While EVs and hybrids may reduce some
traditional maintenance tasks, regular
servicing remains essential. It is best to have
professional inspections carried out by a
trusted, suitably qualified business to ensure
your braking systems, tyres, suspension,
cooling systems, and electronics are
functioning safely and efficiently. Keeping up
with scheduled servicing is also the smartest
way to protect your investment. Regardless
of whether you drive a petrol, hybrid, or fully
electric vehicle, maintenance is vital.
PETS & PAWS
First aid basics for pets
Many animals are naturally curious,
and accidents can occur. Learning a
few first-aid basics can make a crucial
difference before you reach the
veterinary clinic.
One of the most important steps is to
stay calm. No pet owner likes to see their
furry companion injured or in pain,
but animals pick up on your stress and
fear. Your reactions can cause greater
discomfort or panic in the animal, which
can lead to biting. Approach them slowly
and speak calmly and reassuringly. Use
the burrito technique by gently wrapping
a cat or small dog in a towel to prevent
scratching. Call your vet immediately
once you notice your pet is injured or
sick.
Check your pet’s breathing and
responsiveness. Gently tap or call their
name to see if they react. If your pet
is unconscious, ensure their airway
is clear of obstructions and confirm
they are breathing. If your pet is not
breathing or has no heartbeat, take them
to the vet immediately. Attempting CPR
on a pet without proper training isn’t
recommended. If possible, assess your
pet’s gums. Use your finger to gently
pull back their lip and look at the colour
of their gums. Pale or white gums may
indicate shock or blood loss, while bright
red gums may signal overheating. These
situations require urgent veterinary care.
For bites, bleeding, broken bones, and
burns, call your vet immediately. If your
pet is bleeding, control any bleeding
quickly. Apply gentle, steady pressure
with a clean cloth or bandage to help
stop the bleeding. Place a light dressing
over it, and if the blood soaks through,
place another dressing on top rather
than removing the first. If your pet has
suffered a burn, cover the area with
a clean cloth dampened with roomtemperature
water.
Heatstroke in summer can be an
extremely quick killer of pets. If you
notice excessive panting, drooling,
vomiting, or collapse in your pet, this
could be a sign of overheating, and urgent
veterinary attention will be required.
Move your pet to the shade and cool them
down slowly with fans, air conditioning,
or cool (not ice-cold), damp towels while
heading to the vet.
Another simple step is to keep a basic
pet first-aid kit at home and in the car.
There are many specific pet first-aid kits
available for sale, or you can make one
yourself. Include non-stick bandages,
sterile saline solution, a small syringe
(useful for dehydration and wound
flushing), gauze and sticky tape, bluntended
scissors, tweezers, swabs, gloves,
and your vet’s phone number.
Most importantly, never give human
medications unless directed by a
veterinarian, as many common pain
relievers are toxic to pets.
Being prepared with some basic first
aid knowledge can turn a frightening
moment into a manageable one and even
save your pet’s life.
Get prepared for
the impending
arrival of frosts
Expert advice on what to do for
your garden this week
VEGETABLES
By now, cooler areas may
have had a touch of frost, but
in all regions carrots, being
cold-tolerant, can be left in the
ground until August.
Lettuce can be sown from
now until early April in gardens
with suitable conditions for
growing them during winter.
Select hardy types and grow
them under cloches or in large
pots on a sunny porch.
Autumn-sown lettuces need
well drained soil, rich in
compost.
Onions can be sown now to
stand over winter, and autumn
sowing is best in the South for
the likes of Pukekohe Long
Keeper. Select an open, sunny
place, adding well-rotted
compost. Onions do well in
well-limed soils.
Runner beans will produce
until frosted. Covering them at
night will help delay the inevitable
and if basil and other tender
herbs and vegetables are grown
nearby, a large frost cloth can
cover the entire area to prolong
harvesting.
Regular watering or liquid
manure applications will
ensure the maximum bean
crop, as will picking them as
soon as they are ready to eat.
Small is definitely beautiful
in this case and avoids the
unpleasant stringiness that puts
many people off these nutritious
vegetables.

FLOWERS
This is the month to plant bulbs
for spring displays. Making excellent
companions for daffodils
are old fashioned, sweet-scented
red-brown wallflowers planted
beside a late flowering variety of
daffodil.
Purple violas also look good
with late flowering daffodils.
Southern gardeners have it
over their northern counterparts
when it comes to tulips, for these
hardy bulbs prefer winters that
chill them thoroughly, and they
are intolerant of humid conditions.
They like a sunny spot and
can be left for years, although
lifting them when the foliage dies
down is recommended.
Careful selection of varieties
will give tulip flowers over
a longer period. Crocus corms
and Iris reticulata are seen better
if planted along the edges of
paths, while glory-of-the-snow
(Chionodoxa luciliae), snowdrops
(Galanthus) and bluebells
(Hyacinthoides) are good for
rose beds or used to cover bare
ground under trees.
Rambling roses will have
completed their flowering season
and can now be pruned. If
there is plenty of new growth at
ground level, cut off old branches
that have borne flowers. If new
growth is scant, simply remove
worn or diseased wood and cut
back faded flower trusses and
seed hips.
A liberal dressing of compost
or commercial rose fertiliser will
encourage fresh growth next
season.
Lawn grass seed will still germinate
in most areas if sown this
month or next.
FRUIT
Tomatoes grown outdoors
may need covering at night as a
precaution against frost. Reduce
watering to encourage the crop to
ripen before hard frosts kill the
plants or ruin unripened fruit.
Remove any leaves shading the
fruit clusters and pinch out the
vigorous side shoots which can
appear at this time of year.
Glasshouse tomatoes should be
given the same treatment to keep
them fruiting as long as possible.
Tomatoes grown outdoors may need
covering at night as a precaution against
frost, so scenes like this can be avoided.
Classic car show returns to Wigram
From Alfa Romeos to Austin Sevens,
Lamborghinis to Leylands, and
Maseratis to Morris Minors – plus
plenty of unique and quirky machines
– the South Island’s biggest classic car
gathering returns on Saturday, March
7, with the Avid Classic Brit & Euro
Canterbury Car Show.
Held in the grounds of the Air Force
Museum of New Zealand in Wigram,
the event draws on the suburb’s long
and distinguished motor racing history,
adding to the atmosphere as the best of
British and European marques go on
display.
This year marks 70 years since Jaguar
achieved its remarkable 1956 double,
winning both the Le Mans 24 Hour
race and the Monte Carlo Rally in the
same year – a feat no other marque has
matched since.
To celebrate, the Jaguar club will
present a special display featuring a
replica Jaguar D-Type racing car and a
Jaguar Mark VIIM, representing the two
victorious models from that historic
year.
Canterbury’s premier family-friendly
classic car show will showcase more
than a century of motoring, with
vehicles built for discerning owners,
speed enthusiasts and families alike.
Many of the meticulously maintained
vehicles will come from nearly 100
manufacturer clubs and brand
collections — including Jaguar, VW, MG,
Austin-Healey, Citroën and Ferrari —
while others will be exhibited courtesy
of private collectors. All have been
lovingly restored and presented to a
high concours d’elegance standard.
Another highlight will be the St John
Ambulance Historic Preservation Team,
which plans to display five British and
European ambulances from years past,
Dark Horse rising: Ford’s
most potent Mustang yet
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
The American car industry are masters
at creating muscle cars with thunderous,
powerhouse V8s, and one of the best is the
Ford Mustang coupe.
The Mustang has cemented its place
in US performance-car history alongside
other all-American high-performance
luminaries such as the Chevrolet Camaro
and Corvette, and the Dodge Challenger.
When the first-generation Mustang
took the automotive world by storm in
1964, it was a genuine game changer,
offering an affordable and accessible highperformance
coupe for the masses.
Sixty years after its debut, the all-new
seventh-generation Ford Mustang has
arrived, and it is the most exhilarating yet.
Included in the range for the first time
is the Dark Horse – the first new Mustang
performance series in 21 years. It comes
loaded with the most powerful performance
ever offered from a new 5.0-litre V8.
There is plenty to like about the
unmistakable modern chiselled looks
of this car to complement its heritageinspired
design.
The upper grille shape is influenced by
the first version, while the Tri-Bar LED
headlamps continue the originals models
classic lighting signature. A redesigned
roof profile makes it easier to get in and
out of this beast.
Three versions of this latest Mustang are
available here with the $92,990 Fastback
GT the first model out of the starters gates,
with the convertible a $12k option.
Rounding out the range is the Dark
Horse auto that gallops into buyer
contention at $114,990, and there is
$116,990 six-speed manual for those that
fancy one.
Providing the large and strong heartbeat
for this current Mustang is the fourthgeneration
Coyote V8 engine.
Its active-valve performance exhaust
system enables the GT Fastback to deliver
362kW at 7250rpm and 567Nm of torque.
The Dark Horse produces the same
amount of torque but brings another 11kw
of power to the performance table.
The system’s delivers a custom-V8 sound
with the ability to close the valves to dial
back the amount of noise.
This extra urge has been unlocked by
Ford’s new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct
injection and low-pressure port fuel
injection – delivering more concentrated
low-end torque, high-rpm power, and
improved fuel efficiency.
A solid prod of the throttle and the motor
flies. This demands plenty of vigilance
from the driver and extensive use of the
cruise control and speed alert on the open
road, to travel on the right side of the law.
For all its heavy duty performance, the
engine happily potters along in ‘chill mode’
in city traffic.
One thing built into the Mustang from
day one is its distinctive, deep and rumbly
exhaust note. God bless America!
A 10-speed automatic with a wide ratio
span is the prefect gear-changing buddy
for this mighty motor and the architect of
its sharper throttle responses and quick
fire gear changes. Everything is done at
pace in this car and that includes swift, and
The cabin is no space capsule with rear
seat space tight and not overly accessible.
With the low slug seating position I found
myself looking up and over the dash, even
with seat height adjustment maxed out.
The steeply raked roofline means rear
visibility isn’t as good as it could be either.
The back seats are cramped and not a
space where adults would want to spend at
lot of time, but okay for smaller children.
These are the compromises that come
with high performance two door USA
made coupes, but haven’t stopped it
becoming a world top seller in its class.
A modern, interior has a 12.4-inch digital
instrument cluster that can be customised
to show different animated designs on the
centre stack. This digital instrument cluster
flows seamlessly into a 13.2-inch centre
stack behind the same piece of integrated
glass, angled towards the driver. Together,
they create a fully immersive digital
experience mimicking a fighter jet cockpit
– but in a real-world sports car.
Safety is well covered, with dynamic
stability control, front and side airbags,
and a performance brake package all
standard.
Autonomous emergency braking
with pedestrian detection is included,
along with adaptive cruise control, lanedeparture
warning and lane-keeping assist.
A standout feature for night driving is
the auto-levelling headlights and automatic
high beam, both of which reduce driver
workload after dark.
Stopping power is quick and decisive
thanks to the excellent 19-inch Brembo sixpiston
front brakes – true showstoppers in
every sense of the word.
The Mustang Dark Horse benefits from
unique chassis tuning, larger rear sway
bars and heavy-duty front shocks.
Steering response and grip are further
enhanced by a K-brace, improving
handling and feedback. The adaptive
shock absorbers monitor wheel and tyre
movement up to 1000 times per second,
striving – and largely succeeding – to
deliver optimal traction across a variety of
driving surfaces.
The Mustang dazzles with razor-sharp
handling, communicative steering and
impressive road-holding agility. The biggest
downside is a noisy, unyielding ride below
70km/h in urban driving, amplified over
rough road surfaces. This car prioritises
exceptional power and handling, and ride
comfort takes a back seat.
That low-speed abrasiveness won’t
bother Mustang faithful, who will see it as
an integral part of the car’s character.

separate titles, adjacent Edwards Road and Selwyn Road, Rolleston from
General Rural zone to Medium Density Residential zone.
The purpose of the request is to enable residential development, along with
an associated neighbourhood commercial centre, on the southwestern side
of Rolleston.
The proponent has requested amendments to the PODP that include:
• amending the PODP maps to rezone the site to Medium Density Residential
zone (MRZ)
• inserting a new outline development plan to guide development of the land
• amending SUB-REQ13 to manage development relative to the provision of
infrastructure and roading upgrades
The private variation request and associated documents can be viewed
online at service centres and public libraries in Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln and
Rolleston or at www.selwyn.govt.nz/V5 Edwards Road
Submissions
any aspect of this private variation request to change the PODP. Submissions
must be written and in accordance with Form 5 of the Resource Management
(Forms, Fees and Procedure) Regulations 2003, which is available from any
Council service centre or online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/V5 Edwards Road
Submissions may be:
Posted to: Planning Department, Selwyn District Council, PO Box 90,
Rolleston 7643, Attention: Submission on V5 Edwards Road
Delivered to: A Council service centre in Darfield, Lincoln, Leeston or
Rolleston.
Emailed to: submissions@selwyn.govt.nz
(Subject line: Submission on V5 Edwards Road)
Made online: www.selwyn.govt.nz/V5 Edwards Road
The closing date for submissions is 5pm on Wednesday 25 March 2026.
Next steps
The Council has accepted this private variation request to change the
PODP for notification which enables public consultation. At a later date all
submissions received will be summarised and published. Further submissions
will then be invited allowing certain persons and organisations to support
or oppose any of the initial submissions. An Independent Commissioner
will then hear all submissions and make a recommendation to Council, after
which the Council will decide whether to decline or approve the private
variation request. Any party who is not satisfied with the Council’s decision
may then appeal to the Environment Court.
More information
For further information regarding this private variation request or the
process outlined above, please contact Council’s Policy Planner Jon Trewin
Living Areas
The composition of a home’s living areas is
relevant for functionality and in matching the
personalities of those living there.
Many house designs have open plan
living with a central living area and
maybe a separate lounge or media room
off this space.
The number and placement of
windows and doors is significant, not
just in relation to whether you like sun
in the home or prefer a cooler situation
but also in terms of indoor outdoor flow,
along with age and lifestyle of the family.
When examining house plans,
consider how sliders or bi-folds facilitate
indoor/outdoor flow. Do they access
the best part of the yard? An example
being doors that face the east or south
through which a cool breeze may come.
Depending on structural aspects
of the house, the positioning of specific
windows and doors may be switched
around for a given section, on which a
house is to be built.
Other considerations relate to home
furnishings. We are often quick to
consider placement of the television yet
overlook a bookcase or other piece of
furniture we will want in the living area.
Think about lounge suites, sofas and easy
chairs, especially if you do not intend
to replace existing furniture. Measure
each piece of furniture and consider
how it will fit within the dimensions of
particular living spaces on a house plan.
To help you in gaining an idea of
space, mark out the size of each room of
a house plan, in either a large room or
on a lawn. Next, mark out where each
piece of furniture will be placed. Walk
around the marked objects considering
the spatiality and how the various pieces
work together. This exercise may lead
you to decide to replace some furniture
after all. Alternatively, you may change
some aspect of the design or even choose
another plan.
If the size of the living area is fixed
due to budget or another factor, consider
the type of furniture to be placed in
each room. Bulky lounge suites take up
more space than smaller modernistic
easy chairs with finer lines that are still
functional.
The age of children who will live in
the home is also significant. Open plan is
great for young children as they can be
watched while playing. It is nice though,
to have a room to escape to especially
as the children get older so a separate
lounge can be an attractive option.
This room may also be a children’s play
area complete with television set. The
square metre size of a house is relevant
here. The feeling of spaciousness can
be sacrificed if a separate lounge is
incorporated into a smaller home.
Getting your living area right starts
with you; your family’s needs, your
lifestyle and what you would like, with
your budget also likely to play a factor.
A separate lounge
or media room can
offer a place to relax
or escape to.
Open plan provides a
spacious feeling.
Selling your home?
Potential buyers are likely to be
living in your neighbourhood, it’s
an area that they already love
and are actively seeking to stay
in. That’s why it makes sense to
advertise your property in the
Selwyn Property Guide.
For cost effective, highly targeted advertising
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Boost your kerb appeal
19
First impressions matter, and this
is especially true when it comes
to our homes. Whether you’re
planning on selling your home or
just want to make your home look
more attractive there are several
easy ways to boost your home’s kerb
appeal, without putting in too much
effort.
Front door focus
Your front door acts as a focal
point for your home’s exterior, so
you want it to stand out for all the
right reasons. A fresh coat of paint
goes a long way, but you can also
refresh old hardware with more
modern fixings or consider adding
a stylish new door knocker or house
numbers.
If your door is past the point of
saving and needs a replacement, opt
for a high-quality composite or solid
wood door that not only looks good
but offers energy-efficient benefits.
Don’t forget to check your
windows, too, to see if they need
a lick of paint or replacing with
something new.
Lighten up
As well as boosting the appearance
of your home, good lighting will
also make your home more secure.
Well-placed lighting will make your
home look more premium and give
it a welcoming vibe.
If you’re unsure where to start,
a couple of matching lantern-style
lights either side of your door
look great and can be paired with
pathway lighting to define walkways,
and a motion-sensor security light at
the side or rear of your property.
Fix it up
Cracked paving, chipped
paintwork, and dirty brickwork can
all seriously drag down your home’s
kerb appeal, so make time to tackle
all those small jobs you’ve been
putting off.
Use a jetwash to clean driveways,
pathways, and bricks, repaint your
exterior walls, repair any cracks,
and reseal your asphalt, if it needs it.
Get landscaping
Landscaping is one of the best
ways to improve the look of your
home, and you don’t need to fork out
for a professional landscaper or hire
a gardener to improve your outdoor
spaces.
Keep your lawn neat and tidy with
regular mowing, add some interest
with seasonal plants and flowers,
and tackle weeds when they crop up.
