Christchurch City Libraries’
historic art lending collection
has come full circle, with
its remaining The Star, January works 23, 2025 now
transferred to the Christchurch
Art Gallery’s collection.
The lending service was
established in 1953 by then City
Librarian R.N. O’Reilly, with
a series of reproductions and
original New Zealand art works
from The the Star, 1950s January through 23, 2025to the
1990s.
Two years later, in 1955, the
city council approved an expansion
to include works by local
artists. At that stage, 80 prints
were in circulation, each purchased
for no more than 19
guineas.
“The collection grew over
the years to 297 items and was
a who’s who of New Zealand
artists at the time,” said city
council head of libraries and
information Erica Rankin.
“Some pieces went missing
over time, and even though lists
of missing works were sent to
art dealers, none of the pieces
have ever been returned.”
Library members could borrow
paintings for a month at a
time, renewing them for up to
six months.
However, more valuable
originals by Rita Angus, Colin
McCahon, Bill Sutton and Toss
Woollaston were withdrawn
from lending during the 1970s
and 1980s.
“The library stopped purchasing
in March 1981 when an
inflationary art market made it
impossible to fund, and storage
space was required for Central
Library renovations,” Rankin
said.
“Some pieces stayed on display
at the Central Library, but
many were housed at the Robert
McDougall Art Gallery.”

The print collection was sold
in June 1995. In 2001, 115 paintings
were formally gifted to the
Christchurch Art Gallery, with
a further 45 transferred in the
years since.
Now formally decommissioned,
about 60% of the
collection has moved to the
gallery, with the remaining
works sold at auction.
One of the latest transfers,
Buck Nin’s Green Valley, is currently
on show in the gallery’s
Living Archives exhibition.
Next year, further works
by Buster Black and Alfreda
Simmonds will be restored for
inclusion in a new exhibition,
alongside Patrick Mulcahy’s
Fish mobile.
“While Christchurch City
Libraries may no longer lend
artworks, the celebration of art
and culture, and its availability
for public enjoyment continues
in our libraries,” Rankin said.

A Minor obsession becomes a

when you start giving your
cars personalised names, they
become a part of your family
forever.
“Our first was Monty, a 1952
Morris Minor four door sedan
that bought from one careful
lady owner who had it hidden
in her garage for over 10 years
in Halswell,” she said.
“He’s my husband Brian’s
car and he’s powered by a
side valve 918cc four cylinder
engine.
“Next came Shrek, a 1952 two
door saloon with a larger 948cc
four cylinder motor that Brian
had bought literally from a couple
of houses down the road in
Rangiora.
“It’s his car and he drives him
everywhere. He was a project
car painted bright green.
“We pushed him home and
got him going again, and he’s
still painted in the V Drink
green, making him very visible
everywhere you go.’’
Anita’s pride and joy is
Audrey, a 1959 Morris Minor
1000 four door sedan.
“I went for a drive with my
friend Jane who has a convertible
Morris Minor and she
invited me as her navigator on
a road trip to Rotorua for the
Morris convention being held
up there,” she said.
“I went home and told Brian I
was going on a road trip and he
said ‘what about me?’

“I worked out that I had the
funds, which I was saving up
for a new kitchen – which I still
haven’t got. We decided to buy
another Morris Minor and use
that to go up to the convention,
then sell it when we got back. But
we didn’t and now she’s mine.
“(Brian) found Audrey in
Oamaru and drove her home
backfiring and carrying on
all the way back. She needed
a lot of work and so we spent
the next five months to get her
ready.”
“We love these cars
because they are so
easy to work on. We
work on them together,
it’s our thing. He works
on the engine, while I
work on the interior. It
works out very well for
us as a couple.”

fun and we raised $5000 for the
NZ Spinal Trust,” she said.
The couple’s latest acquisition
is George, a 1961 Morris 1100
van.
A former MED (Municipal
Electricity Department)
electrician’s van, George still
carries the original paint
colour. The hand-painted MED
emblem is still visible under the
overcoat.
“We were later told that the
most common thing to break on
these vans was the axle because
drivers overloaded them
regularly,” Anita said.
Asked why Morris Minors hold
such appeal, Anita said Brian
had loved them long before they
met – which is why he bought
Monty.
“I love anything retro and love
dressing up in period 60/70s
costumes.
“We love these cars because
they are so easy to work on. We
work on them together, it’s our
thing. He works on the engine,
while I work on the interior. It
works out very well for us as a
couple.”
She said Morris Minors are a
very nice car to drive and always
put a smile on people’s faces.
“Whenever we park up,
people come around and chat
about learning to drive in a
Morris Minor or how it was
their first car.
“Everyone has a story to tell
about driving Morris Minors.”

Competition forces
charity to close

Charities competing for funds
and the economic situation has
forced The Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation to close.
It has been helping community
organisations for 32 years.
The foundation is a charitable
trust which supports clubs,
schools, projects and emergency
services from Heathcote
to Taylors Mistake.
Over the past four years the
foundation has had to use its
capital to maintain its annual
grants due to a reducing
amount of donors.
Foundation chair Martin
Hawes said the foundation’s
capital has decreased rapidly
because of competition among
charities, and the economy. It
would need $500,000 to survive.
The loss of donorship coincided
with a the foundation
introducing tertiary scholarships
about four years
ago in addition to grants to
organisations.
“Although we’ve done a lot
of good in the community, we
think it’s time to wind it up,” he
said.
The closure of the foundation
has been discussed by the board
for the past three years.
Despite the writing being on
the wall for a number of years,
Hawes said it was still difficult
to pull the plug.
“Organisations like this gives
you a really good look into what
is going on in the community
and the amount of work some
people are doing to keep clubs
and groups going,” Hawes
(above) said.
“I think the foundation over the
years has had a big role in helping
organisations and families do
stuff they maybe wouldn’t have
been able to without us.”
Before closing down, the foundation
will be distributing the
remainder of its capital, about
$200,000.
“We’ve got enough money to
do that at the moment, but if we
waited another couple of years
we wouldn’t have that money.
We’re going to go out on a major
granting round.”
Hawes said the foundation’s
absence may have an impact on
organisations which have previously
received grants.
“I hope we can make significant
donations in this final round
that’ll leave them on strong
footing,” he said.
