By PaulaHulburt
Amajor Marlboroughemployer
is facing backlash over working
conditions, with workers’ morale
at an alltimelow,itisclaimed.
Some shellfish processing union
workers atSanford Limited in
Havelock walked out ofthe job
last Wednesday.
Oneworker, whoasked fortheir
they wouldlosetheir job, said staff
concerns included poor communication,
and management being
disconnected from factory-floor
realities.
“There is also hesitation to report
minor aches or injuries due to
the threat ofreassignment to
said.
“Sanford’s executives andleaders
are becoming inhumane totheir
is not operating in accordance
with the“values”they’ve claimed
in theirfinancialreports.”
The 24-hour strike took place
aftermonthsofnegotiationsfailed
Teacher’s Struggle to Sleep
Margaret’s Fitbit tells a
remarkable story giving hope to
thousands with sleep problems.
For 35 years, Margaret
commanded classrooms of
teenagers. The retired high school
teacher who could silence aroom
with a look, the woman who
marked essays until midnight and
still bounded into school by7am.
Energy wasnever herproblem.
“I loved those early mornings,”
sherecalls.“Cupoftea, lessonplans
on thetable.Sleep wassomethingI
didwell.”
Butat68, good sleep hadbecome
athing of thepast. Like nearly half
of New Zealanders over 50, she
faced nightly battles that left her
exhaustedand frustrated.
“I’d dread the moment the lights
went out,” Margaret explains.
“I’d lie there for hours, tossing
and turning. Even when Idid fall
asleep, I’d wake multiple times. The
mornings were the worst. Ifelt like
Iwas dragging myself to thekettle.”
She found herself avoiding
invitations. Book club felt like too
much effort. Even phone calls with
hergrandchildrenlefther drained.
“You start to withdraw,” she
admits.“Notbecause you don’twant
to see people, but because you don’t
have the energy. That’s not who I
am.”
Research showsthatasweage,our
bodies produce less melatonin, the
hormone that signals sleep.Combined
Acommunity group who help
deter crimeare appealingfor help
Community PatrolsNZ(CPNZ)
has two units inMarlborough,
operating out of both Blenheim
andPicton.
Butmorevolunteersare urgently
neededtohelpensurethe service
canoperate at an optimumlevel.
Patrol Supervisor Brent Laurenson
said there were currently
fifteen volunteers and the ideal
to be effective is betweentwenty
and thirty.
“Generally, people join asthey
wish to do some worthwhile
community volunteering andlike
to contribute to bringcrime levels
down which isthe aim ofCommunity
Patrolling,” he explained.
“CPNZ isproven locally and
nationally to be of greatbenefitto
thecommunity with ourrelationship
to NZ Police as we are“extra
eyes andearsfor thepolice”,able
to assist especially when they
arebusy.
“We also help members of the
community who, for example,
may have amedical event, are
lost andneedhelporinavehicle
breakdownsituation.”
The national organisation was
and lighter sleep cycles, itcreates a
perfect stormofsleeplessness.
Margaret had tried everything.
Warm milk. Lavender onthe pillow
andvarious othernatural remedies.
“Some would make me drowsy,
but I’d still wake at 2am,” she says.
“Nothing helped me stay asleep.”
Then her daughter mentioned
readingabout Koru Sleep online.
“I almost didn’t bother, but she
insisted.”
She picked upabottle from her
local pharmacy. Unlike typical sleep
aids that simply combinemagnesium
with aherbortwo,thisformula took
acomprehensive approach shehadn’t
seen before.
“What Inoticed immediately was
that it felt natural,” she recalls. “No
grogginess, no strange dreams.Justa
gentle settling.”
The retired teacher now follows
asimple routine: two capsules, 30
minutes before bed.
“Within days, my Fitbit was
showing longer stretches of deep
sleep, the kind where your body
actually repairsitself.”
“I wake up clear-headed now
instead of groggy. It’s like someone
switched the lights back on in my
life,” she laughs. “I’m reading again,
spending quality time with friends,
Always read the label and take asdirected. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch
keeping upwith things around the
garden.”
For Margaret, better sleep
has meant better days. She’s
back at book club. She calls her
grandchildren without watching
theclock.
“When you’re exhausted,
everything feels harder. Your
patience, your focus, even your
relationships suffer,” she reflects.
“Now Ifeel like myself again.”
Her advice? “Sleep isn’t optional
after 60. It’s how we stay present for
thepeoplewho need us.”
Youcan try Koru Sleep at local
community pharmacies.
Marlborough Repertory Society presents
aBoathouse Production of Shakespeare in
Love.Weput co-directorPam Loganinthe
spotlight and asked what makes this show
so special.
How are rehearsals going and
have therebeenany memorable
momentsfor yousofar?
Rehearsals aregoing well with adedicated
cast workingextremely hard –and having an
enormous amount of funalong theway. This
weekendpastwehad workshopstodevelop
thenumerousfightscenesand physicalityof
some actions. Iguess theremay be some sore
bodies this week. How to deliverastageslap
and knock heads together inaconvincing
manner were also newskillslearnt!
Shakespeare inLove is also alove story
so theinclusion of an intimacy coachinour
workshops was also of vital importance to
ensure actors feel comfortableand safe.
Lizzie Tollemache and David Ladderman
from Rollicking ProductionsinChristchurch
were ourguest tutors. Our actors (and directors)
learnt somuch from their experience
and methodical and professional teaching
styles.
How big is the cast and will
we recognise theactorsfrom
otherproductions?
Thereare twenty in thecast, some of whom
play several roles. The Boathouse Theatre
is delighted towelcome actors new toour
society, includingAnton Pelemanwho plays
William Shakespeare and Rose Church,
playing Viola. Some actors from past productions
arePaulSouthey,Jim Rawdon,Rob
Miller,Ray Gauden-Ing andMargieFletcher.
In addition, there are six instrumentalists
“The Bard’s Band” with Liz McKay as
musicaldirector.
The support team backstage also play
vital roles, creating costumes and sourcing
props, building theset,creatinglightingdesign
andmanagingall that happensonstage.
This adaptation has been
described as “wildly funny.”
Howdoyouensurethehumour
shines through?
The film was written by Marc Norman
and Tom Stoppard; the stage version is an
adaptation by Lee Hall. It is an extremely
witty and clever script. Shakespeare buffs
will recognise many references, puns on
linesand events from Shakespeare’splays.
Truthfulness,timing, beinginthe moment,
sharing the action with the audience and
keepingfocus aresomeofthe strategies we
usetolet that humour shinethrough.
What wouldyou hope Shakespeare
wouldthink if he were
satinthe audience on opening
night?
Iwould hope he wouldloveit!!
What appealed about this
show in particular?
Iremember loving the film when itcame
out. It is atotally fictional story based on
Shakespeare. When ourplayselection panel
first read the script aloud, wewere
all infits of laughter. Itseemed
an opportunity to create afun
Shakespearian world where
Shakespeare just might have
hadwriter’sblock andhejust
might have fallen inlove
with ayoung girl dressed
as amaleactor in hiscompany.
Just how it all turns
out ‘is amystery’ -you
will have to come andsee
theplay!
Do you get
nervous ahead of
openingnight?
Always. There are so
many ‘moving parts’ ina
live show. However, itisa
nervousness ofanticipation
andexcitementknowing opening
nightisthe culminationofmonths
of hard work –alsointhiscasenew
Dear Ed
Ihad hoped that the last letters on
that we couldreturntomorenormal
It is Hamas, not Israel, that is the
cause ofevery death inGaza, by
using their own people ashuman
Palestiniancasualtiesare theirsingle
As for Israel stealing Palestinian land,
they are only occupying their ancestral
land awarded tothem byboth the League
of Nations and the United Nations after the
Holocaust. There has been acontinuous
presence of Jews in Israel for 2000 or so
years before Islam ever existed. Multiple
archeological findings and writings prove
Jewish presence in the area many centuries
before Christ. Prior to 1949 the Jews ofthe
area were called Palestinians by thecolonial
powers. Modern Palestine is aconstruct of
Yasser Arafat and the Soviet Union inthe
1960’s so that victimhood could beused as
aweapon against Jews.
Afinal word, there is no apartheid in
Israel,1,500,000 plus Arabsliveinthe only
Ihope now that we can agree to differ and
turn our attention to more positive issues in
our community and bring this to an end for
the sake ofharmony.
Changes coming for Eltham Road cycle lane
Marlborough Roads is making
changes to acyclelane near
ahandful of local Blenheim
education and early childhood
care providers.
System Manager Wayne
Oldfield said the Eltham Road
cycle lane was installed in 2017
to separate cyclists, vehicles
and pedestrians along the
busy street, next to Whitney
Street School and Blenheim
Playcentre.The road is also
apopular transit route for
Bohally Intermediate and
Marlborough Girls’College
students.
“It’stimely to review the
effectiveness of the cycle
lane and Council has tasked
Marlborough Roads to look
at an option which willbetter
meet the community’sand
cyclists’needs,”MrOldfield
said.
“There have beenmixed views
from cyclists using it.Wehave
also received community
concerns about the lossof
parking and access sinceit
was established, althoughthe
original aim was to retain as
much parking as practicable.
“The cycle lane was designed
to makecycling to school
safer for pupils attending the
primary school and to provide
abetter cycling environment
for students and the public
between the Taylor River
SharedPathway and Eltham
Road, Maxwell and Beaver
Road. School students do
cycle along Eltham Road so we
want to ensure asafe routeis
available for them.
“Wealso want to encourage
the public to cycle the Taylor
RiverReserveshared pathway
as this is agreat way to get off
busystreets,” Mr Oldfield said.
The alterations will create an
in-road cyclewayretaining
some elementsofthe existing
cycle lane.The raised concrete
separators will be removed
and the road reinstated on
the eastern side. Apainted
cycle lane will be created
intermittently along Eltham
Road in bothdirections and
MarlboroughRoads is looking
at returning roadside parking,
with localised no parking lines
around the school crossing
and at Carr Street.There will
alsobeimprovementsaround
the zebra crossing.
The alterations will be funded
within Marlborough Roads’
current budget and work could
get underwayasearly as
this Easter oncedesigns are
confirmed and acontractor
appointed.
Improved Floodwatch website goes live
Council’sFloodwatch website has
been upgraded to anew platform.
Floodwatch is an easy-to-use tool that
helps you judge if thereisaflood risk
in your area. The map displays current
rainfall, river flow and river level
data from monitoring sites around
Marlborough.
“The new platform has thesame
familiar graphs and layoutbut it will
perform better -particularly on mobile
devices -and has some enhanced
features,”Council’sChief Information
Officer Stacey Young said.
Youcan find out more andaccess the
new site at: www.marlborough.govt.
nz/services/river-management/floodinformation/floodwatch
“The ‘About’ informationpanel
explains how to use the map and
graphs.”
“This upgrade will ensure that
Floodwatch remains robust, accurate
and ready to deliver critical flood
information when people need it
most,”Stacey said.
“People should save the new website
address as afavourite link on their
web browser anddelete the old one.”
Floodwatch graphs show bothcurrent
data and flooding thresholds, with
descriptions of whatthe thresholds
mean -for example at whatlevel a
particular road might be closed.This
means you can compare current river
levels and flows withthe thresholds
to getaclear idea of how aweather
event may affect you.
Invasive African Lovegrass found
in Marlborough
Council is calling on landownersto
look out for African Lovegrassafter it
was discovered near theUre/Waima
River bridge in South Marlborough.
The invasive perennial grass
poses asignificant threat to the
region’s environment and pastoral
land, according to Council Senior
Biosecurity Officer Hayden Nott.
“Iflandowners suspect theyhave it on
their property,theyshould contact us
immediately.”
African Lovegrass has aggressive
growth and can displace native
vegetation and pasture.The
deep-rootedgrass forms dense,
unproductive tussocks up to 1.5
metres tall, with distinctivebright
green to blue-greencurly-tipped
leaves and blackish-purple seeds.
“Unfortunately,Marlborough provides
ideal conditions for this grass,” Mr Nott
said. “It grows rapidly during drought,
tolerates hard frosts and poor soils,
and produceslarge quantities
of easily dispersedseed which
germinate in both spring and autumn.”
The grass is particularly concerning
because of its low palatability to stock
and rapid spread viacontaminated
machinery or livestock. It typically
establishesindry,disturbedareas,
including roadsides, riverbeds and
coastal sites. It reseeds prolifically
after fire,spraying or mechanical
AfricanLovegrasshas been found
near theUre/Waima River bridge
disturbance,sopreventing it from
becoming established in Marlborough
is essential.
African Lovegrass is found in only
afew locations in New Zealand,
meaning new detections,such as
this one in Marlborough, canstill be
contained if detected early.
Mr Nott said that many invasive
plant species are easily spread
with machinery and soil movement,
so ensuring equipment is clean
when moving between properties
is essential to prevent further
establishment of invasive plants.
Historically, rural women inNew
Zealandfaced heavyresponsibilities
in both the home and on the farm.
Many were isolated with little access
to healthcare.
Recognising this, sixteen women
came together and founded the
Women’s Division ofthe New
Zealand Farmers’ Union in 1925.
Women then, and now, have found
friendship throughthe institute.
“A lot ofpeople join abranch
Melva explained. “This
is especially true if they are new to
What amatch! These twoteams
went at it from the outset. The
Highlanders started with some
fast andflowingbackplaytokick
ball beingflungout to theedgeand
Jona Nareki scored the opening
try. Then minutes later, through
some electric lineoutand driving
maul work,the Chiefs struck back
with Samisoni Taukei ahoscoring.
Then through some dynamic
lead up work by Quinn Tupaea,
he sets off Leroy Carter for a
length of thefieldtry.The Chiefs
then scored againthrough another
try bySamisoni Taukei aho, and
looked like they hadthe game well
and truly won when they scored
againthrough Callum Boshier.
But the Highlanders weren’t
done. After astretch of good
passes Caleb Tangitau streaked
through the defence toscore the
Highlanders second try in the
74th minute. There was then
some greatinterplay betweenthe
saw Veveni Lasanqa score inthe
80th minute. Itdidn’thelpthatthe
After that, Will Jordan went
The Brumbies came back to
Anew era for ANZAC Day
commemorations
OpiniOn
By Stuart Smith MP
Legislation toformally
recognisethose whohave
served New Zealand in
times ofwar and warlike
conflicts beyond 1966 has just passed in
Parliament.
It was long overdue and fulfils acommitment
bythe National Party before the
2023 election to honour the sacrifice and
service ofveterans.
Until now, many veterans have been
excluded from official commemorations as
theAnzac DayAct didnot coverconflicts
beyond 1966 -meaning those who served
in places like Timor-Lesteand Afghanistan
were notabletobeformallyrecognisedon
Anzac Day.
Commemorations on Anzac Day were
originally designed to remember thosewho
fell at Gallipoli; however, NewZealanders
are increasingly using this occasion to
remember andhonourall whohaveserved
NewZealand.
Kiwisare grateful forthe courage, commitment
and sacrifice of servicemen and
women not only in the past, but also inthe
present. Although many communities have
already chosen torecognise contemporary
service, because this has not been reflected
in legislation, it hasbeenveryinconsistent.
TheAnzac DayAmendment Bill amends
the Anzac Day Act 1966 to cover other
conflicts and persons who have served
New Zealand in times ofwar or in warlike
conflicts in thepastand in thefuture, that are
not currently covered bythe Act and Iam
personally very happy tosee the law being
rectified in this way.
AnzacDay 2026 will be thebeginning of
anew era for our veterans, their families,
friends, employers(forthose in theTerritorial
Force) andlocal communities. TheBill
recognises and commemorates service by
New Zealand personnel inUnited Nations
missions, multi-force groupings ororganisations(such
as theUNpeacekeepingforce
on theSinai Peninsula) andinAlliedforces,
wherethose forces have participated in awar
or warlikeconflict involvingNew Zealand.
“Kiwis aregratefulfor the
courage, commitment and
sacrifice of servicemen
andwomen,not only in the
past,but also thepresent.”
AnzacDay 2026 will mark thebeginning of anew era. Photo: File
Importantly, theBillalsorecognisesNew
Zealand service personnel who have died
in training associated with wars or warlike
conflicts, New Zealand residents and other
persons who served in Allied forces in the
two World Wars, and military personnel
from all Allied countries, aswell asNew
Zealand, whoparticipatedinthe first Allied
landingoftroopsatGallipoli.
In addition,there will nowbeexplicitinclusionofthose
whoservedinnon-combat
roles. Nurses, medics, the Home Guard
and the Merchant Navy all made vital
contributions, often atgreat personal risk
or loss of life, but have not always been
fully recognised, so it is great tosee this
amended aswell.
Ultimately, wewant all those who have
served New Zealand in times ofwar, and
their friends, family, and comrades, to
attend their local Anzac Day service and
know it is also for them. Exactly how
individual communities and Returned
ServiceAssociationsreflectthese changes
will always be up to them, however hearing
the names of those who served, orthe
campaigns they were part ofreflected in
the service is meaningful.
Recognising our veterans, establishing
anew national day oftribute commemorated
byanannual awards ceremony and
acknowledging that for those who have
worn military uniform, theword‘veteran’
carries profound personal meaning are
important steps forNew Zealand totake.
As many have observed,globaltensions
are increasing and alongside these necessary
improvements,weare also delivering
on our 15-year horizon Defence Capability
Plan toensure wehave the resources,
equipmentand supportweneedtooperate
nowand in the future.
New Zealand’s future prosperity and
security depends onour Defence Force
andIam proudtobepartofaGovernment
that is stepping up support both for those
currentlyserving as well as thosewho have
previously served.
