| editor’s letter |

Socially and developmentally,

my six-year-old is on par

with her peers—but when

it comes to cravings, her

palate is more mature than

many adults. Forget bland, beige fare;

my daughter's idea of a decadent

dinner is chicken Caesar salad, tinned

sardines on toasted sourdough, or

grilled salmon with steamed rice and

asparagus. I’ve yet to meet another

kiddo with such an adventurous

palate. To be clear, she’ll never say “no”

to cheese pizza, chicken nuggets, or

ice cream—but she genuinely delights

in bold flavors, varied textures, and

entrées that venture well outside the

mac-and-cheese box.

So when I showed her the photos

from this month’s feature “Eat (&

Drink!) Your Greens” by Sharon Penny (page 58), I wasn’t surprised when her

response was an enthusiastic “yum,” not “yuck.” The brussels sprouts with bacon,

avocado green curry, lemon pesto chicken pizza, and sweet green treats (naturally)

topped her must-try list.

Whether or not you share my daughter’s devotion to leafy greens, buttery

avocado, broccoli, and matcha-flavored everything, I’m

confident you’ll find something in the story that’ll make

“Don't wait your stomach growl—or at the very least, have you feeling

for someone festive for St. Patrick’s Day.

to bring you

Green goodness aside, there’s much more in store on

the pages ahead. In honor of Pi Day on March 14, Caitlin

flowers. Plant

Emmett slices into the region’s best sweet and savory

your own pies, from beloved banana cream and personal-sized

garden and boysenberry to every fruit-filled variation in between. Dig

decorate your in on page 78.

own soul.”

To celebrate spring’s arrival—and the birds, bees,

–Luther Burbank butterflies, and (fingers crossed!) blue skies that come with

it—we rounded up 10 fashionable and functional “Spring

Things” (page 46), including a flower-filled maxi dress by

Free People, locally made orange blossom honey, and an herbal allergy relief.

Consider it your springtime—and sneeze-time—survival guide.

For me, March is one of the most magical months: the weather begins to warm,

daylight lingers a little longer, and winter hibernation gives way to socialization.

Wondering where to wander? Turn to our Calendar (page 28) for local fun runs,

Easter egg hunts, and plenty of beer and wine events—or check out Take a Hike

(page 36) for a moderate 5.2-mile loop with sweeping coastal views, a touch of

history, and a satisfyingly sweaty payoff.

As the world outside grows brighter by the day, I hope you, too, find a reason to step

outside, try something new, and savor the season in all its green glory. Cheers!

EXPLORE

Lodi

by CAITLIN EMMETT

An easygoing wine getaway filled with great drinks,

gourmet food, live music, and more is closer than

you might think. “Lodi is California wine country

without the attitude; laid-back, welcoming, and

rooted in the land,” says Wes Rhea, CDME, president,

and CEO of Visit Lodi. “You can spend the day

out at the lake, wander through downtown, and

sip incredible wines with the people who actually

make them, then close it out with a great meal

and that easy small-town feel.” Just hop on the

freeway going south and you’ll be there in no

time, but before you do, read on for our top Lodi

recommendations.

Oak Farm Vineyards

Past-Meets-Future

Appellation Lodi—Wine & Roses

Resort and Spa (appellationhotels.

com/hotels/california-lodi) received

a makeover this past summer, and

it shows. Everything feels entirely

refreshed and new, especially in

the 66 guestrooms and suites, but

with a warm, agricultural undertone

representative of the region. The

serene grounds will transport you

directly to relaxation central (be

on the lookout for parrots!); if you

need a bit of help fully unwinding,

stop into Wine & Roses Spa or grab

an indulgent French-inspired

pastry at Maison Lodi.

Food & Wine

If you need more than

almonds or crackers

with your wine, you’re in

luck. Oak Farm Vineyards

(oakfarmvineyards.com) is a

21-and-over property serving

up breakfast, brunch, and

lunch seven days a week

that can be ordered directly

to the tasting room. They

even have mocktails and

Temple coffee! A must-taste

is their 100-point winner

2024 Fiano. Another viable

option for food and vino

is Michael David Winery

(michaeldavidwinery.com), well-known

for their Inkblot and Freakshow bottles.

The property features an outdoor pond

and attached café/bakery (think burgers,

salads, and pie) open daily, with a bistro

that serves wood-fired pizzas seasonally

on weekends.

Water Adventures

As “Your California Central Valley Go-To

Paddling Destination," Lodi Boathouse

(lodiboathouse.com) offers a plethora of

kayak and SUP rentals. Are you a newbie

who could use some guidance? Adult and

children intro classes, private classes,

and more are available. If a tour sounds

Lodi Beer Company

interesting,

sign up for

a sunrise

paddle,

a sunset

paddle, or

even a full

moon paddle!

Downtown

Deep-Dive

If you find the

giant arch

and historic,

brick-lined

streets, you’ve

made it into

Downtown

Lodi (@downtownlodi). You can definitely

imbibe in wine here—and there’s plenty of

spots to do so—but for beer lovers, head

to Lodi Beer Company (lodibeercompany.

munch on Scotch eggs and English-style

fish and chips at The Oxford Kitchen

also pop in and

Their handcrafted,

small-batch

cheeses are made

from goat’s milk

produced on

location—think flavors like Strawberry

SweetPea Goat Cheese.

Par-fect Activity

Hit up Micke Grove Golf Links (mickegrove.

com) to play 18 holes amongst vineyards

and centuries-old grapevines. A hidden

golf gem in our area,

the course boasts

well-maintained

grounds, greens

that roll purely,

a challenging

back nine, and a

picturesque finishing

hole. While the

course already offers

fair prices for our

area, book online

and you’ll see two highlighted “daily steal”

rates that offer even better deals.

Culinary Delight

Celebrity Chef Charlie Palmer has done so

many things right with Americana House

(americanahouselodi.com), where one can

expect progressive American cooking

with a focus

on seasonal

produce.

It feels like

The Oxford Kitchen

being invited

inside Palmer’s home—if your friend is

great at decorating with harvest-inspired

tones and has Michelin stars and James

Beard Awards. Standouts include brussels

sprouts with maple-y, bacon-y bites;

chicken cordon bleu; steak au poivre; an

impressive wine list; and dirty martinis

done right. They even have an in-house

cheese aging cabinet. Need I say more?

Relax in Nature

Experience a sliver of Japanese culture

without hopping on an airplane at the

three-acre Japanese Garden in Micke

Grove Park (visitlodi.com/directory/mickegrove-park).

Watch fish swim at the tranquil

koi pond, take in the 60-plus cherry

blossom trees (they’re best seen in late

March-May), and even view a traditional

tea house. Visitors can explore from 9

a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on

weekends.

Grapes & Grooves

Wine and music abound at Jessie’s Grove

Winery (jessiesgrovewinery.com). Their

popular weekend performances take

place on Friday

and Saturday

late afternoons

and evenings,

so you can

get the winery

experience after

hours. They also

have Sunday

music during the

daytime, and

their popular

Groovin‘ in the

Grove Concert

Series starts

in May.

When the

weather’s nice, rent a cabana

outside to taste your wine in comfort

and style.

Spectacular Science

Curious kiddos and adults alike

will love the WOW, aka the

World of Wonders Science Museum

(wowsciencemuseum.org)—a handson

museum that offers programs and

science-based exhibits for all ages. Think

of it as a mini-

Exploratorium,

filled with

knowledge

and over 70

exhibits on

electricity, optics,

magnetism,

energy, and

get to know

Our region is rich with dining destinations, but it’s

rare for a restaurant to endure for decades—let alone

survive a pandemic, rising food costs, and fierce

neighborhood competition. The eateries featured here

may differ in cuisine and clientele, yet they share a

few defining qualities: lasting success, deep community

roots, and names that honor their founders. Read

on as three celebrated namesake restaurateurs—

Bobby Coyote of Dos Coyotes, Molly Hawks of Hawks,

and Frank Visconti of Visconti’s Ristorante—dish on

leadership, the most rewarding (and most challenging)

aspects of restaurant ownership, and a few of their

favorite foodie indulgences.

OPEN SINCE: 1991

Successful

Restaurateur

Spotlight

Bobby Coyote, founder of Dos Coyotes

Border Café (doscoyotes.com)—with 12

locations and counting—got his start the

way many successful restaurateurs do:

W E L L D O N E

by MEGAN WISKUS

at the very bottom, and at a young age.

From dishwasher and ice cream scooper

to host, cashier, bartender, manager, and

beyond, each role shaped his work ethic

and business instincts. Those early lessons

still guide him today. When asked about

the secret to Dos Coyotes’ longevity—

which celebrated its 35th anniversary this

January—Coyote keeps it simple: “Hard

work and long hours, along with delicious,

fresh, and healthy food, plus generous

portions at a great value.”

What’s been your most memorable

experience? During our final building

inspection on January 3, 1991, the pipes

burst on the roof during a freeze; I thought

we weren’t going to pass the inspection;

luckily, we did! Another was when we

received our first food review in the

Sacramento Bee in January 1992.

What's the most rewarding part of

owning Dos Coyotes? Without a doubt,

all the meals we have served for the last

35 years, as well as the eight million and

counting Border Burritos that have been

devoured; also, the many first-time, frontof-house

jobs we have created for high

school and college students.

What's the biggest challenge/hardest

part? Keeping prices fair with value when

combating inflation.

What's something about Dos Coyotes

that many people may not know?

We’re locally owned and committed to

providing our guests with fresh, chefdriven,

Santa Fe-inspired dishes.

Three things you can't live without:

Family (including my dog!), music, and

Hatch green chiles.

Five years from now, you see yourself

and your business: I know that Dos

get to know

County’s most beloved

and enduring fine

dining destinations—

was on track for a

career in medicine

when she made a

pivotal turn toward

the culinary arts,

enrolling at the

California Culinary

Academy in San

Francisco. She went

on to hold a variety of

food and beverage roles

throughout the Bay Area, but

it was her time at Michelin-starred The

Village Pub in Woodside where Hawks says

she truly learned how to cook—and how

to run a kitchen. In 2007, she opened the

doors to her namesake restaurant. Beyond

hard work, Hawks believes “excellence at

this level requires constant attention. I also

try to do everything I can to support my

team and keep us organized. And we try to

say yes as much as possible.”

What’s been your most memorable

experience? We recently catered an event

and had a table collapse. Luckily, we hadn’t

served any food just yet and made a swift

recovery.

What's the most rewarding part of

owning Hawks? The people. Interacting

with our guests always brings me joy and

invigorates my spirit. And the same goes

for my team. I'm grateful for a team of true

professionals and have deep respect for the

jobs they do.

What's the biggest challenge/hardest

part? We do a fair bit of catering, and it's

always a challenge to take the restaurant

offsite, especially when catering for over

350 guests!

What's something about Hawks that

many people may not know? Hawks is

my maiden name. My dad and five brothers

are all in construction, and they each had

a hand in building out the restaurant. My

husband, and I are currently building

out a new restaurant that will be named

Fagnoni's, our married name. Fagnoni's will

open later this year, in the Quarry Ponds

Town Center, so we'll soon have ‘his and

her’ restaurants.

Three things you can't live without:

A little notebook and pen (to keep me

organized), a sharp knife, and a clean

workstation.

Five years from now, you see yourself

and your business: Earning a Michelin

star and maybe taking a trip to Italy.

Favorite ingredient to work with: Fish.

I respect the delicate touch required to

butcher and properly

cook it.

Favorite menu

item: The cold,

winter weather has

me craving our

gnocchi. It's warm,

comforting, and

the perfect texture.

Favorite local

restaurant:

Restaurant Josephine.

Favorite food city: New

York City. There's so much at

your fingertips, and Michael (my

husband) is from New York.

FRANK VISCONTI

VISCONTI'S RISTORANTE

OPEN SINCE: 1992

For as long as Frank Visconti—of

Folsom’s iconic Visconti’s Ristorante

(viscontisristorante.com)—can remember,

he loved helping his mother in the kitchen.

Those early moments of preparing

homemade meals together sparked not

only his passion for great food, but also

an appreciation for the memories created

around the table. After working at a

pizzeria in San Jose and gaining invaluable

insight from his Uncle Sam, a restaurant

owner in Chicago, Visconti knew it was

time to open a place of his own. In 1992,

Visconti’s Ristorante was born. Asked

what has made the Italian eatery such a

success, he points to values that go

beyond the plate: “It begins with love,

respect, and truly getting to know the

people who support us—I believe life is

better with friends, not enemies. I also

believe in never cutting corners, using

the freshest ingredients possible, and

staying closely connected to the team

to ensure integrity, excellence, and the

best value for our community.”

What’s been your most memorable

experience? Seeing the community

come together in both support and

curiosity of our establishment—who

we are and what we’re about—on

opening day. Over 30 years later, and

the community is still as loving and

supportive as the first day we opened

the doors.

What’s the most rewarding part of

owning Visconti’s? The community.

It’s magical and humbling to be loved

by so many people and watch families

grow together.

What's the biggest challenge/

hardest part? The business portion.

Dealing with rising costs on supplies and

not wanting to raise our prices to the rate

of inflation. The restaurant industry is

always throwing owners curveballs. Just

when you think you know the busy and

slow days, nights, or seasons—it can catch

you off guard.

What's something

about Visconti’s

that many

people may

not know?

We offer

some secret

menu items

like Spaghetti

Carbonara and

Strombolis.

Three things

you can’t live

without: Pasta,

veal, and vino—

plus one more

espresso!

Five years

from now, you

see yourself and

your business: I see lots

of economic stimulation and growth—

businesses thriving once again.

Favorite ingredient to work with:

Tomatoes! It’s what most Italians grow

up on. You can purée them, slice them,

reduce them, and make marinara

sauce with them—and who doesn’t like

a good marinara sauce?

Spotlight on

Annie O’Connell

by JENNIFER MARAGONI

A lifelong art lover, Annie O’Connell

spent decades collecting and

surrounding herself with pieces that

brought her joy. When she retired, she

wondered if perhaps she could also

find joy in making art.

Initially, she says, workshop after

workshop led to frustration and

disappointment. A successful attorney

for almost 40 years, O’Connell recalls

struggling to become a student again.

Then artist Bryan Mark Taylor said

something that resonated with her.

“He spoke of the importance of

humility to learning, noting that it’s

often difficult for people who view

themselves as accomplished (in any

arena) to become a true student again;

instead of being open to learning,

they spend their time trying to prove

what they already know,” she recalls. “I

think that was the key to finding the

necessary patience to begin to learn.”

With this realization, and lessons

from painter Kirk Miller, O’Connell

blossomed. “[Miller’s] combination of

skills, patience, versatility, support,

and humor was just what I needed to

gain the confidence to finally consider

myself an ‘artist,’ and to find as much—

if not more—joy in making art as in

collecting it,” says the El Dorado Hillsbased

oil painter.

O’Connell’s works can be viewed in

her home studio and on her website

(annieoart.com); this fall, she plans

to participate in the Placerville Arts

Association Studio Tour and the El

Dorado Hills Fine Art Festival.

How did your “art story” begin?

My first acquisition of original art was

With animals,

is almost always

in the eyes.

I'm Sad Today...My

Master's Away

a $10 etching by a local artist, which

still hangs in my home. Over 50 years

ago, my then boyfriend/now husband

and I started giving each other art

as gifts. Also, the law firm where I

practiced for most of my career was

a huge supporter of the arts, and had

a large collection of art adorning its

walls, which helped cement my love of

being surrounded by art.

When my husband and I first started

collecting art, we were advised to focus

on what we love, not what just seemed

like a good investment or matched our

home décor. We’ve accumulated an

eclectic and diverse collection that not

only brings us joy every day, but also

adds warmth to our home. We never

tire of the old pieces or feel any need to

update for the sake of ‘remodeling.’ If we

love it, that’s enough.

Like so many artists, it wasn’t until I

retired that I decided to see if I might

be able to help create, rather than just

acquire, that joy.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My subjects and inspiration are

intricately connected. I mainly paint

the ‘delicacies of nature’ and, among

them, animals. I’m not particularly

drawn to landscapes or traditional

still lifes but am fascinated by the

graceful complexities of seemingly

simple subjects: the intricacies of a

single flower, the layers of a clove of

garlic or head of cabbage, the light

refractions in a piece of glass, the

interplay of shapes and shadows. With

animals, the inspiration is almost

always in the eyes.

Tell me more about your animal portraits.

With animals, I always put the ‘lipstick

on a pig’ as early as possible; by that,

I mean I go for the eyes. After I block

in the general shape of the head and

placement of key features, I go for full

detail in the eyes. Once I do that, the

eyes inspire and ‘speak to me’ about

what to do with the rest of the painting.

Most of the time, my animal

paintings are commissioned portraits

of pets and are among the most special

and joy-filled works I’m privileged to

paint. These portraits are often given as

gifts, such as for a birthday or wedding,

but more often as remembrances of a

cherished pet that has passed. These

are especially meaningful to both me

and my clients, as they almost always

evoke poignant tears of joy when

delivered. I frequently receive notes of

gratitude—even years later—about how

special it’s been to have a rendering of

their precious pet to remind them of

loving memories.

Has your style evolved over the years?

It’s been a rather subtle evolution. For

example, when it comes to flowers,

I now tend to gravitate to the macro

version of a flower—cropping and

magnifying to hone in on even more

nuanced features. Also, I’m now more

willing to select seemingly monotone

subjects, like an all-white flower, rather

than just the vibrant ones. It’s amazing

how many shades of white one can find

among the shadows and reflections.

With animals, I’ve added more variety

to the styles I might use or the

features I might choose to emphasize,

sometimes using unusual colors in

the underpainting and allowing those

to peek through here and there, or

cropping and honing in on just a

portion of a face. I’ve also learned a

lot about capturing the essence of the

animal, especially through the eyes,

where one can see their trust, spunk,

playfulness, eagerness to please, or

sometimes even sadness.

What’s the best compliment you could

receive about your art?

The very best compliment of sorts

is the immediate reaction when

someone sees their commissioned

piece of art for the first time,

especially when it’s of a beloved pet.

I know I’ve touched their heart when

tears of joy (or melancholy) are the

immediate reaction.

Practice What

They Preach

Healthy Habits Doctors Swear By

by KOURTNEY JASON

Doctors give health advice all day long, but what do

they actually practice themselves? From everyday

wellness rituals to small choices that make a big

impact, these are the healthy habits local medical

professionals truly swear by—and the ones worth

considering for your own life, too.

HONOR RESTORATIVE SLEEP

“I stick to a fixed bedtime to make sure I get enough truly restorative sleep, even

when life gets busy. It’s my way of taking care of myself, knowing that good sleep

helps me feel grounded, focused, and better equipped for the day ahead. Over

time, that consistency supports my energy, mood, and overall health.” Manpreet

Sidhu, MD, Oncologist, Kaiser Permanente Roseville

START THE DAY WITH MOVEMENT

“I exercise before work from 5:45-6:30 a.m. and usually do a variety of weightlifting/

cardio programs on three-month intervals to provide variety and develop strength

and cardiovascular health. Not only has it become a healthy habit and part of my

lifestyle, but it helps lower my stress levels as I embark on long days at the office.” Ryan

Pearson, MD, Family Medicine Physician, Kaiser Permanente Folsom

STICK WITH CONSISTENT EXERCISE

“I have a neighborhood loop, 2.5 miles

with hills, that I walk four times per

week. It can be anything—just exercise

regularly! We [doctors] recommend 150

minutes of aerobic activity weekly and

some strength training.” Leanne Camisa,

MD, Chief of Staff and Interim Chief

Wellness Officer, Marshall Placerville

RETREAT TO WELLNESS

“I go on an annual fitness-focused

retreat/vacation, usually once or twice

a year for two to seven days. Doing

so allows for immersion in a stressfree

environment with various types

of mind-body and fitness activities,

healthy food, restorative sleep, etc.,

which helps me get back on the

healthy habits wagon if I’ve fallen off…

and reinforces how great I feel when I

actually eat, move, and sleep the way

I should.” Brandee L. Waite, Medical

Director, UC Davis Health Sports

Medicine Clinics

STEP UP

“I take the stairs rather than the

elevator. This gives me time to clear my

mind, since there are rarely any others

in the stairwell.” Misty D. Humphries,

Interim Chief of Vascular Surgery, UC

Davis Vascular Center

MAKE ACTIVITY A LIFESTYLE

“I work out four mornings a week,

which helps me start the day energized.

I also love the outdoors, so on

weekends, my wife and I unwind with

extra-long walks or hikes with our dog,

which combines exercise, time together,

and a chance to reset for the week

ahead.” Richard Florio, MD, Physician in

Chief, Kaiser Permanente Roseville

JUST BREATHE

“I try to breathe slowly and deeply

for a few minutes every day. One

technique is box breathing, which

34 stylemg.com | MARCH 2026 | /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemags

helps with relaxation. Slow, deep

breathing may also help lower blood

pressure.” Sandhya Venugopal,

Clinical Professor of Cardiovascular

Medicine, UC Davis Health

MEDITATION MATTERS

“One healthy habit I’m deeply

committed to is my morning ritual of

contemplative breathing meditation,

which gently brings awareness to my

heart. I spend 15-30 quiet minutes with

this practice before the day gets busy;

doing so helps me feel grounded,

centered, and reconnected to my true

self and cleansed from the residue of

the past. It lowers my stress, lifts my

mood, and sets a calm, open-hearted

tone for everything that follows.”

Marjon Fariba, MD, Cardiologist,

Kaiser Permanente Roseville

EMBRACE A DIGITAL DETOX

“Minimize digital distractions. When

focusing on specific tasks, I avoid

wearing smartwatches or keeping

distracting electronic devices nearby.

While these tools make notifications

convenient, they can frequently

break my concentration. For those

who prefer to wear them, using

a ‘work/study’ or ‘do not disturb’

mode can help you maintain deep

focus.” Tajinder Badial, DO, Internal

Medicine Specialist, Dignity Health

Mercy Medical Group Sacramento

DON’T SKIP PREVENTIVE CARE

“I always stay on top of routine

screens and yearly check-ups. Not

only as a pediatrician, but as an

adult, a yearly check-in with doctors

can identify new concerns, detect

early signs of cancer, and ensure we

[as doctors] are doing all we can to

live long, healthy lives! Second, I keep

a water bottle close by during the

day—always. This makes hydration a

habit!” Courtney LaCaze-Adams, MD,

Chief Medical Information Officer

and Pediatrics Site Medical Director,

Marshall Placerville

BACK TO BASICS

“For optimal health and to prevent

illness, I focus on nutrition, exercise,

water, vitamin D/sunshine, and

temperance. I attempt to eat ample

veggies and fruit and stay away

from sugars and processed foods.

I also aim for 10,000 steps a day:

parking farther out in the parking

lot and taking the stairs [when and

if possible] helps make this more

doable. I drink about eight glasses

of water a day and get outside daily

to fill my lungs with fresh air and

sunshine. Lastly, I attempt to get at

least 6-8 hours of quality sleep at

night. With that said, in all things, it

isn’t about overdoing it. Even some

good things done in excess can be

a bad thing.” Emilie Riddle, MD,

Marshall Placerville

Take a Hike

Rodeo Beach, Coastal, & Miwok Trail

by RYAN MARTINEZ

LOCATION:

Golden Gate National Recreation

Area (near Sausalito).

DISTANCE:

5.2-mile loop.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL:

Moderate.

WHY WE LOVE IT:

This scenic loop truly has it

all—windswept beaches, serene

lakes, coastal forests, vibrant

wildflowers, and sweeping ocean

views. Add in the Bay Area’s

refreshingly cool temperatures

and optional detours to fascinating

historic sites, and you’ve got a hike

that checks every box.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:

Expect approximately 1,000 feet of

elevation gain, with long stretches

exposed to the sun. Temperatures

and wind conditions can shift

quickly along the coast, so bring

plenty of water and dress in layers.

Sturdy shoes with good traction are

recommended, as some sections

are paved while others are not. Dogs

are welcome, and ample parking

is available at the Rodeo Beach lot.

As always, practice Leave No Trace

principles.

FUEL UP:

Founded in 1885 in Japan,

Hinodeya Ramen

(hinodeyaramen.

com) expanded

internationally

with its first

overseas

location in

San Francisco’s

Japantown. Today,

it’s a beloved

staple for ramen

enthusiasts

seeking bold

flavors in a

lively setting.

After a day on the

trail, a steaming

bowl of ramen might be

the perfect reward.

Japanese

Influence

in the Bay

Japanese influence in

the Bay Area spans

more than 150 years,

with San Francisco’s

Japantown standing

as the largest of

the three remaining

Japantowns in the U.S.

Following the Meiji

Restoration, rapid

industrialization in

Japan displaced many

farmers, prompting

immigration to San

Francisco. There,

Japanese immigrants

became instrumental

in shaping the

region’s agricultural

landscape—

particularly in the

flower industry.

Despite the forced

incarceration of

Japanese Americans

during World War

II, Japantown has

preserved and

celebrated its cultural

heritage. Today,

landmarks such as

the Peace Pagoda

and beloved events

like the Northern

California Cherry

Blossom Festival

serve as vibrant

cultural touchstones.

And, of course,

the culinary scene

remains one of

the most delicious

expressions of that

legacy.

20 YEARS

Learn the Real Story

of Shen Yun!

Spreading Benevolence,

Beauty, and Hope

IT’S A STORY AS OLD AS TIME—

the David and Goliath kind. A small

group of artists bound by shared

faith, standing in the way of China’s

massive communist dictatorship.

Both our spiritual beliefs and the

culture we work to revive are what

the Chinese regime has been at war

with for decades.

But as the Chinese regime chose

to demonize our faith, imprison

our loved ones, and sabotage our

company, we chose the power of

art—a boundless, beautiful language

of movement and sound—to reveal

who we truly are. The journey

has been one of tribulations but

great triumphs. This year, we

celebrate 20 years. What began

as a quiet aspiration is now hailed

by theatergoers around the world

as groundbreaking, exquisitely

One of the biggest trends in skin

spas right now is the integration of

regenerative and wellness-driven

treatments. Therapies such as exosomes,

growth factors, and peptides are being

paired with highly personalized skincare

protocols to stimulate collagen and

deliver visible, lasting results. Rather

than simply masking signs of aging, these

approaches activate the skin’s natural

repair processes, prioritizing prevention

and long-term skin health. Increasingly,

spas are evolving into one-stop wellness

destinations, blending state-of-theart

technology with science-backed

ingredients and modalities—from GLP-

skin tightening—offering results that

are both holistic and measurable.

A: A silky satin dress is the ultimate

sheen, it flatters beautifully and

transitions seamlessly from day to

night. Wear it strapless or with sleeves

for a look that feels both modern and

are always happy.

Most memorable experience as an entrepreneur:

Helping restore women’s hair from damaged to strong and

healthy, guiding clients as they transition into color while

embracing their natural grays, and giving young girls a fresh

new style. Seeing the smiles—and the confidence—in my

clients’ eyes is incredibly rewarding.

First job: Burger King.

Favorite food: I love sandwiches, especially from Main Street

Melters.

Favorite local restaurants: Burning Barrel Brewing and

Spirits, Solid Ground Brewing, and Franny's Farm Table

are all high on my list.

Favorite small businesses: There are so many! Shorty’s

Gelato & Bakery, Little Lion House, Under The Arbor,

Grateful Threads, and Tree House are a few of my

favorites, though.

Last big purchases: The salon and a trip to Disneyland.

When not working, you can be found: Taking my kids

to sports and dance classes, baking with my daughter,

playing and cuddling with our three boxer dogs, reading,

watching TV, or taking a bubble bath.

You love living here, because: It’s beautiful, peaceful, and

everyone is friendly and welcoming.

Dated to Elated

by EMILY PETER-COREY

A WALL THAT DOES IT ALL

Updating your home can be overwhelming, but when you take it one

space at a time and invest in the expertise of a designer, it can be

an approachable task with a big payoff. Such was the case with this

Roseville home that underwent a modern facelift in the living area.

“The existing layout featured a traditional fireplace, a dated media cabinet

with built-in bookshelves, and an underutilized nook—elements that together

created a clunky, asymmetrical look. With symmetry and balance being top

priorities for the client, the challenge was to reimagine the wall with a modern,

cohesive design,” explains Cathy Tonks, interior designer and founder of

Designs With You In Mind (designswithyouinmind.net).

The biggest project hurdle was working within the asymmetry due to the

off-center soffit, which also held an immovable HVAC. “The challenge was

creating a design that was very balanced symmetry-wise but done in a way

that was soft to the eye and would make [the homeowners] feel as though

it was balanced, even though it wasn't exactly in the center of the space,”

shares Tonks. To successfully achieve this, the wall was split almost down the

middle with one side showcasing the television and the other open shelving.

BEFORE

After photos by Spencer Backman from Backman Creative; before photo courtesy of Designs With You In Mind.

52 stylemg.com | MARCH 2026 | /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemags

Photos by Spencer Backman from Backman Creative.

Additionally, the use of differing

materials on the wall delineated the

space: wood panels around the TV

for texture and acoustics and large

porcelain tiles holding the shelves.

“The tile achieved a slab-like look

at roughly one-third the cost of a

stone slab,” explains Tonks. The space

extends further into the new wet bar

and strategic use of complementary

materials combines the entire living

area seamlessly.

The space is now the perfect

place for hosting guests, thanks to

the addition of a bar. Before, it felt

awkward and undone, something the

homeowners especially wanted to

address. “The underused nook was

reinvented as a sophisticated walk-up

bar, complete with custom cabinetry,

a wine fridge, trash pullout, sink, and

metal-and-glass shelving to elegantly

display bottles and glassware,” says

Tonks. The bar features include

high-quality and durable white oak

cabinets, a stone sink, touch faucet,

gold and glass shelving, and black

marble with gold veining. “Layered

materials were used to add depth and

a ‘wow’ factor,” Tonks explains. Wow

factor is putting it lightly, though; the

elegant finishes create a sophisticated

and modern space that remains livable

and welcoming.

To further unify the wall, a floating

quartz hearth was installed above

the new electric fireplace. This

addition is quite the showstopper,

adding length to the room and

a (literal) warm ambience. Tonks

explains the reasoning behind an

electric fireplace as opposed to a

gas one, saying, “California trends

and codes are moving away from

gas in many contexts. Electric units

provide adjustable, lower heat with

a continuous flame effect for mood.”

Something that misses the mark with

gas fireplaces is that they can overheat

quickly and cycle off, killing the

vibe, especially in small spaces. The

fireplace is still a main focal point, as

it was before the update, but better

blends into the space. “The result is a

contemporary, balanced, and highly

functional entertainment wall that

perfectly reflects the client’s style

and enhances the way they live and

entertain,” says Tonks.

The final piece of the puzzle was

lighting, which Tonks believes can make

a huge impact. “When you light a space

correctly, it feels good and is stunning

all the time, so we routed linear lighting

into the shelves and even put it above

the TV area. I didn't want it to look like

a [small] space, so we uplifted it to give a

nice glow of light.” Look closely and you

won’t even see lighting fixtures—just a

subtle glow that perfectly highlights the

features of this room.

Once the project was completed,

the homeowners admitted they never

could have conceived this design

themselves and were really amazed

with what Tonks and her team

were able to accomplish. They were

completely satisfied and hope to carry

this design through the rest of their

house over time. As for homeowners

seeking a similar transformation, Tonks

recommends hiring a professional

designer first. That way, they can create

a detailed plan that enables apples-toapples

bids and the chance to build

the right team for the design and

implementation, which can minimize

change orders. This renovation took

a total of about eight months and was

well worth the wait. From rendering

to final reveal, the design remained

consistent and was executed perfectly,

much to the delight of the homeowners

and Tonks herself.

STYLE HOME DESIGN

From College Side Job

to a Thriving Business

While studying Administration

and Marketing at Foothill

College, I painted on the side

to cover expenses. My passion

for construction led me to start

Bayshore, and in March 1995, I

became a licensed contractor.

Soon after, I relocated to

Placerville, CA, where my

parents had retired.

Starting a business wasn’t easy,

but my hands-on experience

and dedication helped me

establish a reputation for quality

work. What began as a small

operation quickly grew into a

well-respected company, thanks

to strong client relationships and

a commitment to craftsmanship.

Over the years, we’ve had the

opportunity to work on a

wide range of projects, from

historic buildings to modern

commercial spaces.

Commitment to

Craftsmanship

I learned from old-school

professionals who emphasized

craftsmanship and attention to

detail. That foundation shaped

Bayshore Painters—not just

painting, but a teamwork-driven

company built on quality

and integrity.

Beyond technique, I believe that

painting is about enhancing

and preserving spaces. Whether

restoring an old building or

adding a fresh coat to a new

home, every project deserves

the same level of care. That’s

why we use only high-quality

materials and take the time

to prepare surfaces properly,

Celebrating

Keys to a Great

Paint Job

A quality paint job starts with

proper prep, including priming,

caulking, and premium finish

paint. I also enjoy helping clients

choose the perfect colors and

placement, ensuring the final

look matches their vision.

Many people underestimate

the importance of surface

preparation. A great paint

job isn’t just about color—it’s

about durability. That’s why

we take extra care in prepping

surfaces, applying multiple

coats when needed, and using

the best products for each

unique project.

Staying Ahead

in the Industry

The biggest mistake in painting?

Not applying enough primer or

finish. A proper coating must be

thick enough, and every surface

requires a tailored approach.

Client communication is also

key—we walk clients through

the process to build trust and

long-term relationships.

As the industry evolves, so do

the materials and techniques we

use. Staying up to date with new

products, eco-friendly paints,

and advanced application

methods ensures that we deliver

the best possible results for

our clients.

Choosing the Right

Painting Company

When hiring a painter, look

beyond the bid:

• Check BBB accreditation

• Call referrals

• Verify CSLB license

& insurance

• Ask about prep & materials

At Bayshore Painters, we uphold

the highest industry standards

and encourage homeowners to

do their research.

Giving Back

to the Community

We’re proud to handle painting

for EDCOE and multiple

local school districts. Our

commitment to the community

includes:

Donating to

Local School Sports

We often provide free labor

for charity raffles.

Going The Extra Mile

for Clients

We believe in building lasting

relationships, not just with clients

but with the community we

serve. Whether it’s a small touchup

job or a large commercial

project, our goal is to make a

lasting impact through quality

work and service.

At Bayshore Painters, painting

is more than a job—it’s about

craftsmanship, teamwork, and

giving back. We look forward

to continuing to serve our

community with excellence.

March is upon

it, St. Patrick’s

not, green is

the color of

the month, from

shamrock-ready wardrobes Tabbouleh Salad

to green beer and even green

rivers (if you’re in Chicago).

Of course, green food makes

its way onto menus, too.

And around here, there are

plenty of naturally green,

genuinely delicious dishes and

The Tabbouleh Salad at Zest Mediterranean Cuisine

ingredients. This beloved Middle Eastern meze is a nourishing

blend of ancient grains (in this case, soaked bulgur wheat)

onions and a light dressing of lemon juice and olive oil. Truly

delicious and incredibly nutritious! 1008 Riley Street, Folsom,

Green Glo Smoothie

Can we talk about why Popeye is still eating spinach out of a

Smoothie at Nourish at the Meadow, a wholesome, verdantly

almond butter (hello, protein!), and ice. It’ll start your day off

right or get you ready for a fight with Bluto—and it’s tasty, too.

100% premium Yemeni coffee beans and sweetened

with thick, nutty, pistachio sauce (made using real

nuts and milk)—no fake, pre-packaged syrups here.

Considering coffee originated in Yemen (look it up!),

you’re in good hands. Pair your drink with one of their

Dubai Chocolate

irresistible Yemeni desserts (kunafa cheesecake, anyone?)

and soak in the café’s gentle, welcoming hospitality. Bonus:

they’re open late, so there’s no need to rush the experience.

Tres Rosas

Mexican

by RYAN MARTINEZ

photos by TAYLOR ALLRED

Restaurant

After living most of my adult life abroad,

I’ve come to deeply miss many things

about my home state of New Mexico. Its rich,

layered history, shaped by Indigenous roots and

generations of Mexican influence, has created

a cultural identity unlike anywhere else. I miss

the architecture, the history, the mountains,

the sunsets, the art. But more than anything, I

miss the food.

Until now.

When I sat down at Tres Rosas Mexican

Restaurant and spotted New Mexico

Enchiladas on the menu, I braced myself for

one of two outcomes: deep elation or profound

disappointment. As I waited, my eyes were

drawn to a striking mural of a flower-adorned

woman. Rembrandt-like lighting softened her

impossible not to

dream about those

enchiladas every

New Mexico Enchiladas

face beneath a turquoise-and-gold sombrero,

while a cascade of blossoms framed her figure.

The beautiful artwork felt achingly familiar.

Though the vibe was unmistakably Mexican,

there was an authenticity that instantly made

me feel at home.

The restaurant was inspired by owner

Lilliana and her three daughters. The menu,

shaped by her life in northern Mexico, New

Mexico, and now Folsom, reflects a heartfelt

devotion to her heritage.

Sopa de Albondigas

When the plate arrived, I exhaled in

relief. There was no trendy minimalism,

no deconstructed flourish—just an

honest, generous serving plated exactly as

I remember from childhood.

The first bite transported me.

New Mexico enchiladas defy most

expectations. Rather than rolled tortillas

stuffed with fillings, they’re stacked—more

like lasagna than what many envision.

Each tortilla is lightly fried, dipped in chile

sauce, layered with cheese, chicken, and

more chile sauce, then repeated. The final

touch? A fried egg crowning the top. Tres

Rosas honors that tradition perfectly. In

short, it’s the real deal.

Fittingly, just before visiting Tres

Rosas, my family had been taking our

niece, who was visiting from Chile,

to Mexican restaurants around the

Sacramento area so she could experience

authentic flavors. After her first bite of

Tres Rosas’ carne asada with fresh flour

tortillas, she looked up and said, “You can

tell this food is made with love.” My wife,

savoring the prawn fajitas, declared it the

best Mexican restaurant she’s tried.

Lilliana, unaware that I was there to

write about her restaurant, personally

welcomed us. She even charmed our

Carne Asada Plate and Midori Margarita

toddler, who proudly ordered his own

water in Spanish. There’s a palpable

passion in what she does that’s present

in the flavors, in the service, and in the

warmth of the space itself.

Maybe it’s nostalgia. Maybe it’s the

love infused into the food.

Whatever it is, it will be

hard to choose another

Packing up a toddler and a baby on a Sunday morning is

Coffee Mill provides just that—and more. I stopped in

with my family and was welcomed by staff into a modern yet warm environment. While

my toddler perused the pastries—including the can’t-miss Coffee Cake—I weighed my

coffee options (they offer loads of syrup choices) and settled on an Irish Crème Latte.

It wasn’t overly sweet—just enough to still enjoy the flavor of freshly pulled espresso. My

husband kept it classic with an Iced Coffee, while my toddler grabbed an Orange Juice

out of the fridge from Barsotti Family Juice Co., a Camino staple. I also ordered the

satisfying and satiating! As for my toddler, he picked a Crème Brûlée

come and go—some settling in with a laptop or book, others fueling up

LIST

THE

Pie Day

by CAITLIN EMMETT

What began as an annual celebration of an infinite

number has culturally evolved into something far

more delicious: celebrating with actual pie. Whether

you’re into the mathematical constant or simply

craving the flaky kind, Pi/Pie Day is March 14,

and we’ve rounded up nine local options to satisfy

whatever flavor your taste buds are calling for.

Gold Treasure

South Fork Grille serves up a decadent treat that’s equal parts refreshing and

indulgent—perfect for a warm day when you’re craving a little pick-me-up. Meet

the Gold Rush Ice Cream Pie, featuring coffee ice cream, slivered almonds, and

whipped cream atop a crumbly Oreo cookie crust, with drizzles of caramel and

chocolate. It’s a dessert hearty enough to satisfy even a gold miner’s appetite.

4364 Town Center Boulevard, Suite 124, El Dorado Hills, 916-458-0206, southforkrestaurants.com

Go Bananas

Whenever I eat Asian cuisine, I end up wanting something dairy-filled and/or

creamy at the end of the meal. Fortunately, Fat’s Asia Bistro has the perfect

sweet bite: Banana Cream Pie. Made fresh daily, it comes complete with a flaky

crust and a rich egg custard. There’s no shortage of fresh banana slices in this

bad boy, either—it’s overflowing with them, in fact! And it’s topped off with a

flurry of freshly whipped cream. 2585 Iron Point Road, Folsom, 916-983-1133; 1500 Eureka Road,

Roseville, 916-787-3287, fatsasiabistro.com

Savory Bites

If there’s one spot for a savory standout

on this list, it goes to the Chicken Pot Pie

from Urban Dreamer Farm & Vineyard.

A modified version of the owner’s

grandmother’s crust recipe is filled with

high-quality chicken and veggies grown

in her own garden—or sourced locally and

organically whenever possible. There’s

even a gluten-free version topped with a

thinly sliced potato crust. From March-

November, you can find them at the

Sutter Auburn Faith Farmers Market on

Thursdays from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. 530-308-3665,

urbandreamerfarm.org

Tart & Sweet

One of the first homes built on

Main Street is Sweetie Pie’s Restaurant

& Bakery, and they’re serving up mostlyfrom-scratch

meals and baked goods.

What’s on the menu this time of year?

Rhubarb Strawberry Pie! We all know the

beloved strawberry, but rhubarb tends to

spark questions. It’s crunchy like celery

before it’s cooked, but once it’s baked into

a pie, the texture becomes more jam-like.

Tart, tangy, and fresh, it’s everything you’d

want to accompany a strawberry. Try a slice

for yourself! 577 Main Street, Placerville, 530-642-

An Apple (Pie) A Day

Are you in the mood for

dessert—but also craving a

pizza pie? The Caramel Apple

Pie at Placerville Public House

is just the ticket. A 10-inch

pizza crust is spread with a

sweet cream cheese mixture,

then topped with cinnamon,

Granny Smith apples, brown

sugar, and a salted caramel

drizzle. Grab your slices soon;

it’ll be on the menu through

the beginning of April, then the

seasonal flavor will be updated!

named Mile-High Mud Pie

that’s perfect for sharing. It

consists of an Oreo cookie

whipped cream, velvety hot

fudge, toasted nuts, and an

extra sprinkle of Oreo crumbs

Sublime Stone Fruit

Apricots or peaches—

which one gets your vote?

With the Apricot-

Peach Pie from

Sierra Rizing, you

don’t have to choose. A

customer favorite since

the bakery’s opening

nearly 25 years ago, this

popular pie blends the

best of both fruits, with

peaches sourced from a

local friend’s farm, used

either fresh or fresh-frozen

for peak flavor. Candied

ginger adds a subtle,

unexpected warmth, while

the crust is a combination

of two recipes: the owner’s

grandmother’s and

Postrio, a former Wolfgang

Puck restaurant. 7308

Lime Time

Encanto Cocina & Tequila

Bar likes to present modern

twists on traditional flavors,

and its Key Lime Pie—with

finishing touches of caramel—is

no exception. Expect that

quintessential tart, citrusy

tang from the limes, elevated

with a presentation that’s

unique and refined. Pair it with

a paloma or margarita for a

serious citrus party! 2023 Vine

All for You

Just in case you don’t feel like

sharing your dessert, head

to Brookfield’s Restaurant

for their individual-sized

Boysenberry Pie. This deepdish

delight is made in-house

and baked fresh daily using

real boysenberries (think a

raspberry-meets-blackberry

with fewer seeds). It’s also

celebrated for its ideal crustto-filling

ratio, a detail true pie

lovers are sure to appreciate.

When it comes to wine bars,

it’s not just about what’s in

the glass—it’s about the vibe.

The quality of the hang. The

lingerability. (Agree to disagree,

Mr. Dictionary; it’s a word.)

From cozy counters and

neighborhood hangs to

microwineries and polished

date-night favorites, these local

by SHARON PENNY

wine bars deliver so much more

than a good pour. Whether you’re wine-curious, deeply

devoted, or simply here for happy hour, these spots prove

the region knows how to raise a glass—and keep it full.

Meet me at the

Wine Bar!

Libations abound at

Bacchus House Wine,

Bar & Bistro—praise

be their namesake

Bacchus, Roman god of

wine. A Folsom favorite

for over a decade, they

shine with a dynamic

wine list emphasizing

Northern California

producers, with a few

international labels

sprinkled in. Wines are

thoughtfully curated

to pair with a seasonal,

farm‐forward menu,

making it perfect for

date night or a lingering

happy hour. Speaking

of the latter: it runs

Tuesday–Friday from

4-6 p.m. and is truly one

Great wine but make it historic. Tucked next to the Cary House

Hotel on Placerville’s Main Street, Toogood Cellars is the remote

tasting room for Fairplay’s TooGood Estate Winery. Build your own

wine and port flights from more than a dozen vinos and 14 ports,

ranging from classic varietals to creative one‐offs. Seasonal pairing

events add extra fun, while Monday happy hour brings buy-oneget-one-free

flights and half‐off glasses. Cheers! 304 Main Street,

Placerville, 530-344‐7010, toogoodwinery.com/toogood-cellars

The Vine prides itself on “pouring for the people,” with an

unpretentious, come-as-you-are vibe. Both locations boast a wideranging

wine list spanning local, regional, domestic, and international

labels, plus beer and cocktails. Feeling snacky? Expect craveable

small plates like Asian plum meatballs, flatbreads, tacos, and

charcuterie, plus heartier entrées (in El Dorado Hills) like burgers and

pasta. Toss in trivia, bingo, live music every Friday and Saturday, and

a famously generous happy hour, and you’ve got The Vine way. 3907

There are no small wines, only small grapes. (I just

made that up, and I’m sticking with it.) Willamette

Wineworks, located at the Roundhouse in Historic

Folsom, is a microwinery (get it?) offering traditional

tastings, food pairings, and a hands‐on barrel blending

experience—yes, you can craft your own custom

cuvée! Taste through more than a dozen wines, from

rieslings and rosés to pinots and zins, available by the

flight, glass, or bottle, then pair it all with bites from

Scott’s Seafood Roundhouse. 824 Sutter Street, Suite

Best known for elevated comfort food, Paul Martin’s American Grill also delivers

when it comes to wine. A strong, thoughtfully curated list and Don Draper-worthy

lounge make this polished neighborhood hang an easy pick for special occasions—or

savoring a glass before dinner. The warm, contemporary space and spacious patio

invite you to settle in, sip slowly, and maybe order just one more small plate. Stop by

for happy hour (Sunday to Thursday from 3-6 p.m. or Friday and Saturday from 2-6 p.m.)

and avail of an $18 burger pairing, which includes a select happy hour wine, beer, or

cocktail. 1455 Eureka Road, Roseville, 916-783‐3600, paulmartinsamericangrill.com

Need a friendly face and a cozy hang on

Placerville’s charming Main Street? The

Wine Smith is the self‐styled “Cheers” for

the wine‐curious. Part boutique bottle shop,

part laid-back wine bar, they pour a rotating

lineup of local and regional wines, plus a few

carefully curated international picks. Add

beer, local art, and an easygoing, come-asyou-are

vibe to the mix, and the only real

plan here is to get cozy, linger awhile, and

then leave with a bottle (or two). 346 Main

Street, Placerville, 530-622‐0516

Got your finger on the pulse of what’s new? DNA Wine

Lounge is for you. A go-to for curious sippers who

love discovering something different, this family‐owned

neighborhood spot specializes in bottles from family‐run

wineries, both near and far. The vibe is polished yet

welcoming, with special tastings, happy hour (Tuesday-Friday

from 3-6 p.m.), plus “Tostada Tuesdays!” and occasional

live music. Bonus: it doubles as a retail wine shop, so your

favorites can follow you home. 9719 Village Center Drive,

Suite 100, Granite Bay, 916-872‐1180, dnawinelounge.com

If there’s a mood at House of Oliver, it’s “classy has never

felt so comfortable.” The relaxed, upscale wine lounge features

above-average vinos from the foothills and across California,

spanning whites, reds, rosés, and bubbles. The craft cocktails,

house‐made dishes (hello, baked brie!), live music, and lively

patio work well for just about every type of evening: date night,

girls’ night, or a spontaneous happy hour hang. 3992 Douglas

Congrats to this month’s

nonprofit of the month:

RECREATE

ReCreate is a creative-reuse nonprofit on

a mission to keep clean, usable materials

out of the waste stream and back in

the hands of the community. Through

its craft thrift store, maker studio, and

engaging education programs, the

nonprofit makes creativity, STEAM

learning, and sustainability accessible

to all ages. By partnering with schools,

families, artists, and businesses across

the region, the organization sparks

imagination while actively reducing

waste. Every visit, class, and donation

helps divert materials from landfills—

and turns discarded items into endless

creative possibilities.

For more information, including

ways you can donate or volunteer,

visit recreate.org.

VOLUNTEER

SPOTLIGHT:

Nancy Porter

What inspired you to volunteer for

ReCreate?

I’ve been a ‘use what you already have’

kind of person for as long as I can

remember—and I’ve always loved a good

thrift find. When I donated my very large

collection of glass beads to the store, it

hit me that ReCreate is basically a home

for everything I love. Once I realized that,

I couldn’t help but ask if they needed

volunteers!

What do your volunteer duties entail?

My volunteer work centers around

paper crafting, which is my creative

passion. I spend most of my time

sorting, packaging, and pricing donated

papers and tools for scrapbookers, card

makers, and party throwers. I also enjoy

collaborating with the team to brainstorm

ways to improve how the store looks and

feels for shoppers.

Is there training required?

Most of the training is hands-on, with

general guidelines covered in about an

hour of initial training.

What’s the time commitment?

It depends. I’m usually there four or five

hours a week, but some volunteers do

more and some less. Truthfully, I have a

hard time leaving when my shift is over.

What’s been the best day of

volunteering so far?

I’m excited about something every

day I volunteer. It might be helping a

customer come up with a creative, even

‘unconventional,’ way to use an item to

meet a need, or seeing someone light up

when they find exactly what they need

(or didn’t even know they needed) at a

bargain price. I also love meeting so many

creative people and having fun with the

staff and fellow volunteers.

What’s one of the biggest challenges?

Keeping up with the generous flow of

donations. And if I’m being honest, I also

have trouble walking out of the store

without buying too much.

Photos courtesy of ReCreate.
