Objective of CreaTUNEity

CreaTUNEity allows beginning musicians to explore the concept of

creating or improvising in the concert band setting. By introducing this

concept to all band instruments at the earliest stages of playing an

instrument, the hope is that musicians will feel more comfortable and

less threatened with the idea of improvising or creating their own music.

Please visit my website for more easy, short, and accessible creating

activities that may be implemented into your lesson or rehearsal space.

Performance Notes

Directors may take many liberties with this tune to suit the needs of their

developing ensemble. These include:

-The repeated measures allow students to explore creating/improvising.

If directors do not feel their ensemble is ready for creating, they may play

these measures as written without the creating element. Bonus idea-If

this is your situation, invite a middle or high school student or

community member to model creating/improvising.

-Suggested creative/improvisational notes are notated at the bottom of

each wind and mallet part. As musicians start to feel at ease with playing

the suggested written notes, they may explore adding rhythms, playing

some of the notes and simply taking more creative liberties. Bonus idea-

If you have an advanced musician, differentiate the learning by

challenging them to learn new rhythms as they create. Especially at this

very beginning stage, directors should emphasize that nothing would be

incorrect in what musicians choose to play.

-The repeated measures should be played as written for the percussion

parts. The director may take liberties to allow the percussionists to

create/improvise as they see fit.

-Straight or swing style. The snare and suspended cymbal parts are the

only parts with eighth notes; therefore, they are easily adjustable.

A sincere thank you to the Brookings High School Symphonic Band,

Brookings, SD under the direction of Mr. Isaac McMahon for recording
