William Stowman
Dr. William Stowman is Distinguished Professor of Music at Messiah University, where he is in his 30th year of teaching.
He is Professor of Trumpet, Chair of the Department of Music, directs the Trumpet Ensemble, and directs the top Jazz Ensemble.
He is the recipient of the Robert and Marilyn Smith Award for Excellence in Teaching at Messiah College,
has also earned the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Citation of Excellence for teaching at the collegiate level,
and in 2024 was awarded a Scholarship Chair for his work as a composer.
As a trumpeter, Bill has three solo CD’s to his credit. A Matter of Seconds, A Timeless Place, and Parable have all met with
positive critical acclaim. Fanfare Magazine wrote “. . .crystalline clarity of tone, and impeccable legato” to describe his playing.
Bill earned the DMA from the University of North Texas where he recorded with the North Texas Wind Symphony
and Eugene Migliaro Corporon. His master’s degrees are from Eastern Kentucky University.
His undergraduate degree is from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and and he has recorded many albums with
The Keystone Wind Ensemble and Jack Stamp. Bill regularly performs with Tromba Mundi Trumpet Ensemble,
the Messiah University Faculty Brass and BrassCross, and the Asheville, NC Symphony Orchestra.
His has written for trumpet and piano, trumpet ensemble, wind ensemble, brass band, choir, and symphony orchestra.
He is active as a guest conductor, clinician and soloist, and composer
Fanfare for the Gr814 was written as a gift for my former student Dr. Benjamen Blasko,and a fine group of musicians called
the Green Hills Wind Ensemble from Nashville, Tennessee. Ben and I proudly hail from the hills of western Pennsylvania.
The motive for the work is based on the area code 814 that designates our beautiful region of the country. When talking about
boing back home, we affectionaly refer to this area as “The Gr814."
