A close encounter of
the lightning kind
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Sunday night was just like
any other for Julia and Harry
Orpwood, then “all hell broke
loose”.
About 9pm, their Tancreds
Rd, Lincoln, house was struck
by lightning, leaving a large
hole in a window.
The strike was one of 19
across Selwyn and Christchurch
on Sunday, accompanied
by heavy rain.
Julia was in the lounge scrolling
Facebook while Harry was
in the bathroom getting ready
for bed.
“I was just sitting there, then
all hell broke loose outside, the
flash was huge,” she said.
Said Harry: “It was like
someone dropped a bomb.”
At first, Julia thought something
electrical had gone
wrong with the house. But with
the power still on, she realised
it was lightning.
“I think my husband was
more frightened than me; I just
didn’t know what the hell was
going on,” she said.
Harry said it was “pretty
just metres from where she had been sitting.
frightening”, comparing it
to the current conflict in the
Middle East.
“With what’s going around
the world at the moment, I
thought holy s**t, have they
sent one over here, because
it was that loud – it was
unbelievable,” he said.
The strike also spooked the
family’s pets.
“The cat was outside, she
came running in. The rottweiler
wanted to go outside, the jack
russell was just shaking,” Julia
said.
Their second cat stayed asleep.
Julia sent a message to her
family group chat saying their
house had been struck.
It was only when her daughterin-law
Tanya called to check if
they were okay that they noticed
the large hole in the window, just
a couple of metres from where
Julia had been sitting.
“It was just that much racket
we didn’t hear it break, and the
curtain stopped the glass,” she
said.
While the Orpwoods did not
lose power, electricity distributor
Orion reported about five properties
on Tancreds Rd and three
on Hayes Rd near Ladbrooks
were affected by the lightning
strikes.
Metservice meteorologist
Lewis Ferris said several of the
19 strikes were cloud-to-ground,
which are often louder than
cloud-to-cloud strikes.
Mana whenua council role
up for debate
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Councillors are set to debate
whether to have another mana
whenua representative around
the table.
The decision is due to be
made next Wednesday after
they held a behind-closeddoors
briefing on the future of
the role last week.
The council
and Te Taumutu
Rūnanga signed
a relationship
agreement,
which included
establishing the
council’s first
mana whenua
representation Megan McKay
in 2022. Megen
McKay was appointed in
September 2023 until the
end of the council term in
September last year. McKay,
a lawyer and independent
hearing commissioner, had
speaking but not voting rights
during council meetings.
McKay’s annual salary in the
role was $56,468, the same as a
councillor.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon said
she would not say what her
personal view of the role was
when asked by Selwyn Times.
But she said she was looking
forward to the debate next
week.
"The briefing was held in
a public‐excluded session
to protect information
contained in the paper and
discussion that could prejudice
the council’s relationship
with the rūnanga,” she said.
Selwyn Times understands
the briefing provided new
councillors with background
information about the role.
At large councillor Samuel
Wilshire said he supported
the continuation of the role
because it
saves council
consultation costs
with rūnanga.
“They need to
have a voice at
the table. Megan
brought amazing
perspective to the
last council and
more often than
not she advocated
Samuel
Wilshire
for the whole of Selwyn rather
than just those whom she
represented,” he said.
“They are amazingly good
value in comparison to paying
consultancy opinion in that
sector.”
Wilshire did not have a
breakdown of what the cost
difference would be.
Te Taumutu Rūnanga
chair Puamiria Parata-Goodall
was unavailable for comment
when contacted by Selwyn
Times.
On leaving the role last year,
McKay said the council should
appoint another mana whenua
representative.
“My hope is that the next
council will continue this
journey and see the real value
in keeping this role and this
relationship alive,” she said.
“I ask that you keep it alive,
you keep the relationship
strong, and this district will be
better for it.”
McKay has since been
appointed as one of the two
Ngāi Tahu councillors on
Environment Canterbury.
‘S**t, I hope he’s not inside’:
BY KEES CHALMERS
That was the immediate
thought John Hill had when he
went to drop tomatoes off to his
friend’s place and found it in
flames.
The Lake Terrace Rd house
in Birdlings Flat was engulfed
by fire and black smoke was
pouring out of it.
"I thought, ‘s**t, I hope he’s
not inside’,” Hill, 72, told Selwyn
Times.
But fear quickly turned to
relief – his friend was outside
making a futile bid to fight the
fire with a bucket of water.
Hill joined in, helping his
friend battle the blaze, which
started shortly before 4pm
on Thursday, with the bucket
which they filled with water
from a duck pond on the
property.
But any remote chance of
beating the fire evaporated
when the pond ran dry.
“That was hopeless, but still I
tried,” he said.
It took five to 10min for the
fire to tear through and destroy
the house.
Fire and Emergency NZ said
the blaze was caused by a
damaged lithium ion battery
pack.
Hill said his friend had been
charging power tool batteries in
a bedroom.
John Hill went to visit his friend in Birdlings Flat and found flames coming from his house on Lake Terrace Rd.
before he arrived his friend
had tried to fight the fire with
a water blaster before the
property’s power went off.
The home owner was injured
when a window blew out and
pieces of hot glass and fire
caught onto his left arm.
A nurse who lives nearby
treated the burns with
ointment. He was also checked
Budgies and cockatiels in the
house perished.
Another Lake Terrace Rd
resident saw the smoke and
Strong rural backbone keeps
district’s economy positive
Selwyn’s economy continues to
outpace the national average.
The latest Infometrics
quarterly report shows the
district remains resilient, with
GDP growing 1.9% in the year to
December 2025, compared with
0.4% nationally.
Growth was driven by strong
agricultural commodity prices,
particularly dairy, sheep and
beef.
The dairy payout for Selwyn
farmers is forecast to reach
about $780 million for the
2024/25 season – up 35% on the
previous year.
Said Mayor Lydia Gliddon:
“Farming is at the heart of
Selwyn. These figures reinforce
the importance of agriculture in
our community, giving a good
foundation for our economy to
build from.”
With continued economic
growth, Gliddon told RNZ
she wanted to see cross-party
support for the Government’s
30-year National Infrastructure
Plan.
The strategy aims to reshape
how the country plans, funds,
maintains and delivers key
infrastructure.
“If this plan genuinely aligns
investment with growth and
is consistent across political
cycles, it has real potential to
strengthen the national economy
and support communities.
“Our population is projected
to grow significantly over the
Farmers’ dairy payout for the 2024/25 season is forecast to be up 35% on the
previous year.
coming decades, which puts real
pressure on transport, schools,
health services and housing.
“Councils can plan for pipes
and roads, but schools, hospitals,
and state highways sit with
central government,” Gliddon
said.
Regional input into the strategy
would be critical, she said.
“Any national plan needs
strong district and regional
engagement to ensure it reflects
on-the-ground realities, not just
national modelling.”
Gliddon also acknowledged the
“risk that larger metro centres
attract the majority of funding”.
“Infrastructure investment
should be based on future
demand and economic return,
not just population size.
“Canterbury and Selwyn
contribute significantly to New
Zealand’s GDP, and growth
areas like Selwyn are driving
much of that.”
The Infometrics data
also shows Selwyn remains
a popular place to live.
Residential consents rose 32.7%
and house sales increased
21.9%.
“These figures show our
ongoing growth and some of the
reasons why people continue to
see us as a great place to live.
“As a council, our focus
is on ensuring we have the
right services and supports
to keep what is good, while
also balancing the costs and
needs of our rural and urban
communities,” she said.
Rolly Central Ltd has applied to rezone 66ha of rural land to medium density.
Public feedback sought
for 1000-home rezone
BY DANIEL ALVEY
About 1000 more homes
could be built in Rolleston if a
rezoning request is approved.
Rolly Central Ltd has applied
to rezone 66ha of rural land
at the corner of Edwards and
Selwyn Rds to medium density.
If approved, the development
would back onto the Carter
Group’s 3500-home Rolleston
West subdivision.
The planning application says
one of the key outcomes would
be to provide a “coherent
urban edge” to the southwestern
corner of Rolleston
not covered by the Carter
subdivision.
The application, which is
open for public consultation
until 5pm on March 25,
includes provision for a small
neighbourhood centre and a
primary school if required.
Another proposed benefit is
improved road safety at the sixlegged
intersection of Edwards,
Selwyn, Ellesmere Junction and
Swamp Rds.
The proposed site comprises
nine properties, with none
of the land classified as
highly-productive.
Eight-year push pays off
as traffic lights go live
BY DANIEL ALVEY
Why would you spray paint your
own car on the side of the road at
11.45pm?
That was the question which had
police scratching their heads after
receiving reports of two people on
Springs Rd, Prebbleton, spray painting
a car.
When police arrived, they
discovered one of the people painting
the Ford Falcon station wagon owned
the car.
“It’s unclear why they were spraypainting
it,” a police spokesperson
said.
The car had also lost a left rear
wheel.
The spokesperson said police
tape was put on the car to let people
know they had already attended and
there was no need to make another
report.
A person who works nearby told
Years of campaigning by a
primary school to get pupils a
safer road crossing have finally
paid off.
New traffic lights outside West
Rolleston Primary School, at the
intersection of Dunns Crossing
and Burnham School Rds, were
switched on last week.
Principal Sylvia Fidow was
grateful to see the lights finally
arrive.
“We know they will make a
difference for safety. Parents
are very grateful to have them,”
she said.
Fidow said they had been
campaigning to get lights
installed for about eight years.
“We knew early on, as the roll
increased, it was going to be a
concern.”
The campaigning included
several public pleas from
school board chair Rob Hunt
to councillors to get the lights
built.
The council spent $1.3m on
the lights, covering the full
amount after the New Zealand
Transport Agency (Waka
Kotahi) declined to fund the
project in 2024.
The school’s roll is currently
740, and Fidow expects that
number to rise as new entrants
enrol. She said the school is
educating pupils on when
to cross the road and where
to stand while waiting, with
support from Senior Constable
Jim Manning.
“(Senior) Constable Jim has
been here pretty much every
day,” said Fidow.
Manning has been teaching
the school road patrollers and
pupils how to use the crossing
safely, she said.
“We also have a staff
member on each traffic light
monitoring.”
Fidow said traffic outside the
school is currently lighter than
usual as Dunns Crossing Rd is
closed at its intersection with
State Highway 1 while NZTA
installs a roundabout as part of
wider highway upgrades.
When the road reopens,
traffic using the road is
expected to jump from 2000
vehicles a day to 8000 when the
roundabout is completed later
this year.
In coming years, the school
is likely to be surrounded
by the Carter Group’s
3500-home Rolleston West
subdivision, which is yet to start
construction.
The Science of Sleep After 60
Margaret knows her ceiling fan
has exactly 52 rotations per minute.
She never used to notice such
things. For 35 years, Margaret slept
like a champion. The grandmother
could nap anywhere. Her husband
would joke that she would fall
asleep mid-conversation. But
wherever and whenever it was, she
would always wake refreshed at
dawn.
Now, however, she counts
ceiling fan rotations. Night after
night, while her husband sleeps
peacefully beside her.
“It’s like my brain switches on
just when it should be switching
off,” says the 68-year-old. “By
3am, I’m planning shopping lists,
worrying about the grandkids,
replaying conversations from 1987.
My mind just won’t stop.”
She’s inadvertently joined what
sleep scientists call the “2am club”,
the millions of over-60s who find
themselves wide awake when they
should be deep in dreamland.
Here’s what Margaret didn’t
know: her brain has literally
changed. After 60, our bodies
produce less melatonin, the
hormone that signals sleep. We
spend less time in deep sleep,
and the brain begins to stay alert
when it should be winding down.
The worries that used to fade by
morning now linger on, replaying
on a loop. And the restorative sleep
that once came so easily? Well, that
has become harder to find.
The result? Margaret’s not just
tired. Her appetite felt off, her
morning energy had vanished, and
simple tasks felt huge. Even her
patience with the grandchildren
was wearing thin.
“I didn’t realise how much it was
affecting everything,” she admits.
“I thought I was just getting older. I
thought this was normal.”
Instead of accepting exhaustion
as “just part of ageing,” she started
experimenting. First came cooling
the bedroom, a dimmer on the
lights, walks instead of evening
TV. All worked a little but not the
change she was seeking.
The game-changer? A friend
mentioned Koru Sleep.
“I was sceptical,” Margaret
admits. “Another supplement,
another promise. But I was tired of
being tired.”
She discovered it takes a
different approach. Rather than
simply making you drowsy, it
works to calm racing thoughts
while supporting the body’s natural
ability to produce its own sleep
hormones. The formula combines
ingredients like passionflower and
magnesium that work together.
“Within two weeks, I had
stopped counting ceiling fan
rotations,” Margaret laughs. “Now
I actually sleep through the night.
Always read the label and take as directed. If symptoms persist contact your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch
I’d forgotten what it felt like to
wake up refreshed without that
morning fog.”
Her husband noticed the
difference before she did.
“He said I seemed like myself
again,” she smiles. “I hadn’t
realised how much I’d changed.”
The 2am club is accepting
resignations. Better rest is possible
after 60.
Margaret’s parting advice?
“Don’t accept bad sleep as normal.
You deserve to wake up excited
about your day, not exhausted by
it.”
Hiking up the Port Hills carrying the heavy jerrycans was hard work for Lincoln University’s players including Louis Treasy, Angus Reeves and Lachie McCarthy
‘Borderline torture’ bootcamp
pushes squad to their limit
BY SAM COUGHLAN
A hard pre-season is a rite
of passage for sports teams,
amateur and professional
alike – and Lincoln University’s
rugby squad endured one of
the toughest imaginable as they
build towards the Metro season.
Two weeks ago, the Rams’
60-man wider squad were put
through their paces at an overnight
military-style camp, led
by personal training instructors
from Burnham Military Camp.
Head coach Matt MacDougall
described it as “borderline
torture”.
“They got thrashed on the field
and had a big swim circuit for
a couple of hours, some team
connection activities then went
to sleep. Woke up pretty much
straight away and they did a
big 20kg jerrycan walk down
the side of the motorway on the
walking track.
“Up again at half past five and
got into the ice baths, then out
the back of Governor’s Bay on
the hills with the jerrycans, holding
them above their heads,”
MacDougall said.
“We were trying to put them
under pressure and give them
unrealistic tasks, stuff they
would never ever do to get them
to practice operating under
The pre-season military-style camp was the idea of Lincoln University head
coach Matt MacDougall. Right, Brooklyn Dalgety exchanges high-fives with his
teammates after completing the camp.
pressure, not turning on each
other and not bickering, trying
to keep calm so that we can
hopefully transfer that onto the
field.”
Prop Zach Parkin took part
and said it was a “little bit of a
culture shock”.
“It’s sort of weird when you
haven’t slept at all and people
are making you do stuff you
don’t want to do,” he said.
“There are highs and lows.
Sometimes you’re feeling all
good and then the next minute
you’re feeling pretty dark about
what they’re making you do.”
MacDougall said the idea
stemmed from his time
coaching the First XV at
Marlborough Boys’ College in
2019.
“They were an amazing team,
but they always lost when the
pressure came on. They just
couldn’t handle the pressure
when the big schools would
start to tighten the screws.”
“We advance their rugby
tenfold without even
touching a rugby ball.”
Matt MacDougall
He ran a similar camp with
that side and was pleased with
the response, prompting him to
replicate it in his second year in
charge at Lincoln.
Strength and conditioning
coach Jarrad Choat had a contact
at Burnham, and the plan developed
from there.
“There was no doubt (last
year) we were probably the most
talented team in the competition,
but the average age of our
team was 19,” MacDougall said.
“We advance their rugby tenfold
without even touching a
rugby ball. The game’s not complicated,
but when you get under
pressure, you do silly things.
“If we can put them through
tasks they genuinely think are
unachievable, and they come out
the other side of that, when the
tide’s turning against them in a
game that’s nothing compared to
what they’ve been through.”
Parkin said the experience
ultimately brought the group
closer together – and he was
relieved when it ended.
“When you do something s**t
with your mates or you’re in a
s**t situation, you end up being
a lot closer than you actually
think you might be afterwards,
because you’re in something
pretty horrible together. Someone
said it’s like trauma bonding.
“After we finished, heaps of
boys were laughing and having
a good time together, like this
is insane, it feels insane. Then I
went home and slept,” he said.
Lincoln University open
their pre-season campaign
this weekend with an internal
trial, followed by matches
against Otago University and
Canterbury University. They
begin their Metro season against
Sydenham on April 11.
Country planning
positive approach
for cup defence
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Only one match stands between
Canterbury Country and holding
the Hawke Cup over winter after
their demolition of Bay of Plenty
at Bay Oval.
Country dominated the challenge
in Mount Maunganui,
bowling the holders out for 94
before piling on 440 all out to
claim the cup for the first time
since 2023.
They will defend the cup at
home against South Canterbury
in two weeks, with the winner
retaining the trophy over winter.
Country captain Harry Chamberlain
shook hands with BOP
counterpart Oli White at lunch
on day three, with the hosts unable
to force the outright result
they needed after conceding a
first-innings deficit.
Country all-rounder Robbie
Foulkes, who plays for Darfield,
said his side’s victory was made
sweeter by near-misses in 2024
and 2025, particularly last year’s
five-run defeat to Taranaki.
“Losing the last two years
made the hunger a bit deeper,”
he said.
Foulkes – the younger brother
of Black Cap Zak – took 2/17
with the ball before opening
the batting and scoring 106 off
189 balls, outscoring BOP’s first
innings on his own.
Opening partner Archie
Redfern also made 106, while
wicketkeeper Jesse Frew scored
82 and Will Williams added 53
as Country batted for more than
170 overs to take the game away
from the holders.
Foulkes said watching BOP bat
helped shape his approach.
“They were just probably a bit
too negative and weren’t looking
to score, so I think our comms
going in were just play your
game and get the scoreboard
ticking.
“The pitch was very nice,
probably one of the best I’ve
played on, and it’s pretty cool to
score runs when it’s needed.”
He said Country’s mindset
would not change significantly
now they are defending rather
than challenging.
“If you’re holding it and you
go a bit too negative and try to
play for the draw straight away
like (BOP) did, you can dig yourself
in a hole.
“Looking at how we played, I
don’t think we’ll change much.”
Country will be without
Williams for the defence, with
the seamer returning to English
Holland’s
heroics see
Weedons
secure top
playoff spot
BY SAM COUGHLAN
A display of all-round brilliance
from Weedons’ Taylor Holland
has locked up top spot for his
side ahead of their last-round
bye before the premier one-day
semi-finals.
Holland scored 61 off 65 balls
in Weedons’ 225 all out before
opening the bowling and taking
7/22, skittling Darfield for just 37.
His figures were the secondbest
this season, behind Darfield’s
Robbie Foulkes, who took 7/6
against Cheviot in October.
The win ensured Weedons will
finish the round-robin at the top
of the table, with one round to
spare – when they have the bye.
Peninsula-Harbour’s 15-run
defeat to Oxford, left them fifth
and needing a win over fourthplace
Ohoka on Saturday to make
the playoffs.
Second-place Darfield can earn
a home semi-final either by beating
Oxford or if Pleasant Point lose
to Kaiapoi.
The semi-finals are on March
14, the same weekend Canterbury
Country meet South Canterbury in
the Hawke Cup, a match likely to
deprive clubs of some top players.
Darfield High’s Sam Lindores is shaping up as an impressive rower and likely to
qualify for the Maadi Cup regatta.
PHOTO: SELWYN ROWING
Maadi Cup spots on
the line for first time
BY SAM COUGHLAN
The South Island secondary
school championships will
be the last chance for Selwyn
rowers to prove they can
compete at the Maadi Cup in
two weeks time.
The championships from
Friday to Sunday at Lake
Ruataniwha, near Twizel,
will feature 25 rowers from
Rolleston College, Lincoln High,
Darfield High and Ellesmere
College.
The rowers will represent
their schools as combined club
teams are not allowed. Selwyn
Rowing crews have competed
under the same banner in
previous club regattas.
Head coach Adam Jenkin said
several crews have a chance
to qualify for the Maadi Cup,
which will be held on Lake
Ruataniwha from March 23-29.
It will be the first time Selwyn
school rowers have competed at
the national regatta.
Said Jenkin: “Some of the
higher performing crews, they
know that if they make an
A final, the chances of being
selected for Maadi Cup is pretty
high. So that’s definitely a goal
for a lot of the kids.
“But most of the rowers have
their own personal goals, even
just a personal best time will be
a huge success for them, and if
they’re improving, succeeding
and making their goals, then
that’s me pretty happy.”
He has high hopes for Darfield
High rower Sam Lindores in the
under-18 single race.
“He’s trained really hard all
winter, all summer, and he’s
been performing fairly well in
all regattas. He’s probably my
No 1 pick to take to Maadi Cup,
which will be quite a special
occasion for the club and for the
school.”
It’s not too late to sign up for
the FreshChoice City2Surf on
March 15 – and it could be the
goal that springboards you into
a healthier lifestyle.
With just over two weeks
until the first runners and walkers
leave Latimer
Square, City2Surf
event manager
Steve McCaughan
said now is the
time to put your
best foot forward.
“The beauty of
the C2S fun run is
that participants
can choose from
two distances that
suit them best.
“This year we have more
Steve
McCaughan
entertainment along our course
to keep our participants energised
and moving and I know
many people will be pleasantly
surprised when they see the
exciting innovations Fresh-
Choice are planning for all,” he
said.
The City2Surf offers a 12km
course starting at Latimer
Square and a 6km option beginning
at Porritt Park. Both routes
follow the City to Sea Pathway
along the Avon River.
The event finishes at New
Brighton’s Rawhiti Domain,
where – for the first time – every
participant will receive a finisher’s
medal.
All entrants will also receive
City2Surf
• There are just 17 days until the
City2Surf takes place, and entries
are now open at city2surf.co.nz
• Entries are free for children under
five, while youth entries are $20 and
adults $50
• Team entries can be purchased
and invoiced to your organisation at
city2surf.co.nz/team-entry
• The 12km event starts at 9am on
the day, while the 6km start time is
9.45am
a free Celsius drink at the finish
line. Live entertainment
will run throughout the morning,
followed by a prizegiving
at noon. Although the event is
not timed, McCaughan encouraged
participants to set a
personal goal, whether they
plan to run or walk.
“Our fun run is all about
encouraging people to get
moving and for some it can be
a step to a healthier and more
active lifestyle going forward,”
he said.
“If you’re feeling a bit
bloated after eating too much
over the Christmas break,
then enter the C2S and let it
be a start towards healthier
choices.”
This year, City2Surf is
partnering with Hato Hone
St John as its official charity,
raising funds to support
frontline crews responding to
medical emergencies.
Nearly 100 years later, the allure
of a Rolls-Royce remains strong
When you sit in the back of any Rolls-
Royce, you cannot deny that a sense of
elegance and status prevails.
It permeates through an aura of
understated refinement, and the older
the Rolls, the more refined one feels.
Even today, when one is spotted on
the road, it still attracts a fair amount of
interest as they are extremely rare.
One of the best examples still
gracing New Zealand’s roads is Denis
O’Rourke’s Rolls-Royce 25/30 enclosed
limousine, which began life as a chassis
on January 4, 1937.
The handmade aluminium and
English Oak coach was bought three
months later and combined with
modifications including the famous
Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet mascot that
all Rolls-Royce cars are universally
known for. The finished product cost
the original owners the princely sum
of £1987 10 shillings and 11 pence
(NZ$395,000 today, adjusted for
inflation).
It was bought as a chauffeur-driven
town car for Mrs Frances Salmon of
Kensington, London, after her husband
Alfred died in 1928.
She and her late husband were part
of the Salmon and Gluckstein dynasty,
owners of a famous tea and coffee firm,
L. Lyons & Co, and who also ran a chain
of high-class restaurants and tea shops
in London and later around the world,
until it was all wound up in 1994.
Stored during World War 2, the
limousine was finally sold by the family
to collectors in Illinois in 1982.
It passed through several other
collectors in the US before it was
returned to the United Kingdom in 2014,
where it was reconditioned in Wales.
‘Lady Lyons’ will be at the Avid Classic Brit & Euro
Canterbury Car Show on Saturday, March 7, at the
Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Wigram.
O’Rourke purchased it in 2015 after
spotting it for sale online.
The seller drove it from Wales to
Southampton docks, loaded it into a sea
container, which then travelled via Singapore
until it arrived eight weeks later at
Lyttelton.
There, O’Rourke simply unpacked it,
topped it up, put in a new battery and
drove it home from the port.
The Rolls-Royce 25/30 aptly named
‘Lady Lyons,’ is powered by a 4.257 litre,
six-cylinder inline, putting out 294 horsepower
at just 2000rpm.
“I had always wanted a Rolls-Royce,
and she now takes pride of place within
my small collection of classic cars,” said
O’Rourke, a former lawyer, Christchurch
city councillor and New Zealand First MP.
“It’s wonderful to drive, a pure privilege,
and everywhere you go, people stop
and look at you, wave happily and snap
photos of it on their phones.”
O’Rourke bought the Rolls to use in his
wedding car business, and the car is in
high demand because, “she’s an elegant,
classy lady, offering a very special ride
for any bride,” he said.
Society’s flower show
goes on despite weather
Despite a season of variable weather,
the Southbridge Horticultural Society’s
annual flower show went ahead as
planned, although entry numbers were
slightly down on the previous event.
Visitors were impressed by the quality
of the flower, dahlia, vegetable and fruit,
and floral art displays.
Artwork by Southbridge School pupils
provided a colourful backdrop as guests
enjoyed Devonshire teas. The children
were also thanked for their impressive
display of sand saucers.
Cups and awards were presented
at the end of the show, with president
Mary Cameron joined by deputy mayor
Brendan Shefford for the presentations.
Congratulations to all the winners,
and thank you to everyone who entered
exhibits and helped make the show a
success.
RURAL LIFE
Selwyn’s irrigation: explore the source
From grains and vegetables to dairy
and meat, Selwyn farmers grow the
ingredients that underpin both everyday
meals and premium exports. This worldclass
food production is supported
by sustainable irrigation and skilled
farming practices.
Central Plains Water Ltd (CPWL) is the
farmer-owned entity that operates on
cooperative principles and is the largest
irrigation scheme in the South Island,
delivering sustainable irrigation to
45,000 hectares of shareholder farmland
across Canterbury.
The inaugural “Behind the Gates” bus
tour experience is a community event
run in partnership with the Hororātā
Community Trust and Central Plains
Water Trust, which will give the public
an exciting chance to experience one
of the region’s most significant water
infrastructure developments. The tour
will take visitors from river to farm,
revealing how water from the Rakaia
River is carefully captured to ensure
environmental limits are adhered to, and
delivered to the farm to support food
production and local communities across
the Central Plains.
This guided experience includes
exclusive access to the Rakaia River
intake, via a journey along part of the
scheme’s 17-kilometre headrace canal,
and a close-up view of the recently
constructed labyrinth weir. Guides
will share the story and engineering
behind the project throughout the tour.
Participants will also visit a farm to see
how irrigation water is used in practice
before returning to Hororātā Hall for a
community sausage sizzle and questionand-answer
session with the team.
“The aim is to give people a genuine
understanding of what the Central
Plains Water Scheme does, and the
environmental management strategies
we have in place to ensure careful
management of the water resource,”
says CPWL Chief Executive, Susan
Goodfellow. “Reflecting our longterm
relationship with Hororātā Primary
School and local native planting projects,
all proceeds will go straight back to the
local community. This initiative reflects
what’s important to us – sustainable
water use, food production, positive
environmental outcomes, and strong
Selwyn communities.”
Designed as a relaxed and informative
afternoon, the tour is open to anyone
interested in learning more about
local infrastructure, responsible water
management, and the systems that
support farming within the scheme area.
RURAL LIFE
Love food? Hate waste!
ISABELLE TERESA
When it’s your calling and livelihood
to make something precious, you don’t
want to throw that thing away.
In Selwyn we live in a food production
powerhouse, so may be horrified to
know that roughly one-third of all food
produced globally is never eaten!
The “Love Food Hate Waste” campaign
and annual action week began in the UK
in 2007, spread to Australia, Canada and
Scotland, and launched in New Zealand
in 2016. It is underpinned by extensive
research.
The scary news
The 2025 Rabobank–Kiwi Harvest Food
Waste Survey found that, every year,
Kiwis throw away $3 billion dollars’
worth of food, 60% of which is still
edible. Per household, that’s $1,364
per year, or 80kgs, three full shopping
trolleys, or 5.7 weeks’ worth of each
household’s total food
spend.
Not only is this a crying
shame – and a huge
waste of money – it is an
environmental disaster.
Food in landfill decomposes
without oxygen and
releases methane: 4% of
NZ’s total greenhouse gas
comes from food waste.
25% of all fresh water
consumed here each year,
and 300 million barrels of oil, is used
to produce food that goes to waste.
And then of course, the more food
thrown away, the more our fabulous
Selwyn farmers and food producers
need to produce, which inherently puts
additional pressure on the environment.
The global statistic on this is, if food
waste were a country, it would be
the third largest producer of carbon
emissions behind China and the US.
The good news
Research shows that attitudes are
changing. Kiwis now waste less of our
food than two years previously, “just”
10.9% per household, compared with
12.2% in 2023. Food rescue groups such
as Kiwi Harvest, Kaibosh and Fair Food
collect surplus food from supermarkets,
wholesalers and producers,
redistributing it to charities and people
in need across the country. And Eco Gas
is NZ’s first commercial-scale anaerobic
digestion facility processing food waste
to generate biogas and nutrient-rich
fertiliser.
Food Waste Action Week, 9–15 March
www.lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz offers
a great range of ways to get involved,
whether as an individual, school,
community group or business. There’s
info, recipes, tips and resources,
including curriculum-related lesson
plans and activities.
Sign up for the “Leftover Legends
Challenge”, log the leftovers you’re
eating, climb the leaderboard and be
in to win groceries for a year! And
most importantly, keep buying local
and eating up every scrap of delicious,
Selwyn-produced food.
Succession - start the conversation
that moves you forward.
In my last article (Jan 21, 2026), I
discussed the importance of planning and
those catalysts and key moments in life
where decisions are made that materially
change the course of our lives. Having
a long-term plan for family and business
ensures families are better positioned
to manage these events. We see some
families excel during these times. They
plan, knowing things can and will change,
and they know where to begin to make
things happen.
Succession or transition of a farm from
one generation to another (sometimes
it’s an exit) can be an outcome of these
moments. If you wish your legacy to
be one of a smooth transition, it needs
careful planning. Decisions forced by
ill health or death, when time is limited,
restrict your choices. Rural Coach’s
mission is to support your family
in meaningful conversations, keeping
everyone aligned and on track for
business and family success. Our
independence lets you involve the right
professionals at the right time without
the conflict of interest that children often
feel when Mum and Dad’s lawyer
or accountant manages the process.
As with your big picture plan or strategy,
Rural Coach helps you navigate
succession with a clear plan for you and
the next generation. Our independence
stands out in the industry. We specialise
in facilitating the conversations that
matter by
• Providing a safe, respectful
environment for productive
discussions.
• Helping families move past roadblocks
to make inclusive decisions that benefit
both family and business.
• Enabling Mum and Dad to lead with
confidence through ongoing support.
Having a goal or vision is a start; taking
effective steps to achieve it is the
challenge. Rural Coach can help you
begin the conversation that brings
your family together and brings your
vision to fruition.
Are you a confident farmer with
a clear vision for your future?
At Rural Coach, our vision is simple: Confident farmers achieve
their dreams.
We know the toughest challenges on the farm aren’t always out in
the paddock – they happen around the kitchen table when facing
key decision-making moments. The same applies to family-owned
and run businesses. Our mission is to support you and your family
in having the conversations that matter, ensuring everyone stays
aligned and on track for both business and family success.
Let’s start a conversation
that moves you forward.
Don’t leave your future to chance. Achieve your dreams with
the expertise, systems, and processes of Rural Coach.
RURAL LIFE
Future Fields 2030: All things Arable
ISABELLE TERESA
Arable 101
An arable farmer primarily grows
grain and seed crops. These could be
cereals (wheat, barley and oats) or other
harvested crops like forage seeds and
vegetable seeds, which are significant in
international markets. New Zealand is
the largest radish seed and white clover
seed producer in the world, and a major
player in grass seeds.
Why does NZ need an arable strategy?
Quite simply, because the sector is
so important. Arable farmers are the
unsung heroes of our primary sector,
contributing more than $2 billion to the
economy through their production of
grain, high value seed and an increasing
range of other crops. Arable outputs are
also vital to the $35b livestock industry,
through seeds for pastures, grains and
other inputs for animal feed.
Our sector is challenged by its small
size by global standards, making it
difficult to achieve economies of scale.
However, we have a unique farming
system and proven ability to perform
free of subsidies.
About the strategy
Launched at the end of last year,
Future Fields 2030: the New Zealand
Arable Production Growth Strategy is a
collaboration between the Foundation
for Arable Research (FAR), Federated
Farmers’ Arable Sector Group, United
Wheatgrowers and the Ministry for
Primary Industries. The strategy
considers how arable growers’
businesses and the sector overall might
be strengthened and better equipped
to identify and pursue high value
opportunities into the future.
The strategy builds on the sector’s
existing success and sophistication, and
adds three priorities:
“Building skills” includes everything
from improving financial literacy to
evaluating value chain opportunities
beyond the farm gate and providing
opportunities for arable farmers to
connect with food innovators, start-ups
and existing food businesses.
“Standards of excellence” involves
identifying and verifying the production
and environmental assurance
standards required to provide customer
confidence and build preference for NZ
arable growers and their products.
“Enabling infrastructure” involves
identifying opportunities both on
and off farm. This includes exploring
possible machinery pools/syndicates to
reduce costs of production, addressing
infrastructure gaps on-farm and
opportunities for investment off-farm in
arable transport, storage and processing
infrastructure.
The strategy has set timelines and
measures for delivery through to
2030, with funding sought from levies,
industry and government. As the
strategy says on its cover: “Seeding
innovation, harvesting value.”
Putting in work now will pay off in winter
Expert advice on what to do for
your garden this week
VEGETABLES
Potato crops can be harvested
before the tops have died right
away from the plants.
In small gardens, digging early
enables the area to be used for
winter greens such as silverbeet
or spring cabbage, or for a green
manure crop (oats, peas, lupins)
to be sown.
Once the lower leaves of potatoes
have turned yellow, lift the
tubers and store them in a cool,
dry place away from daylight.
Old drawers or shallow boxes
lined with newspaper are ideal
for potato storage.
The success of winter and
spring crops depends on work
done now. Mulch around the
crops with compost to retain
moisture, feed with liquid
manure to encourage leafy
growth and hoe regularly to control
weeds. Hoeing also exposes
to the air the upper layers of the
soil, where oxygen-loving bacteria
live.
Broccoli can be still planted,
but it is really too late for Savoy
cabbages or Brussels sprouts,
except in warmer northern
districts.
Fast-maturing hardy Asian vegetables,
such as tatsoi, can still be
sown and will stand over winter.
Pea and bean plants should be
cleared away once their crops
have finished and the plants
added to the compost bin. Turn
the ground over to cover weeds
and rubbish, then sow a green
manure crop or plant with spring
cabbages.
FLOWERS
Garden centres are now advertising
new stocks of spring bulbs,
so buy early while the greatest
variety is available.
Anemones and ranunculus,
both of which are available in
single colours as well as mixed
collections, do best in deeply
dug soil enriched with decayed
manure. This will hold moisture,
but to prevent the corms rotting.
Plant anemone corms point
down. Newer strains of ranunculus
include a dwarf form, useful
for growing in pots, although
they need to be kept cool and
well-watered to prevent flower
buds shrivelling and coming to
nothing. The same is true of potted
tulips.
Potatoes can be harvested before the tops have died away from the plants. PHOTO: GETTY
As perennials die down, they
can be divided using a knife or
sharp spade. Perennial phlox and
michaelmas daisies are easily
increased in this way.
Hardy annuals sown now will
fill a gap in the garden once the
spring show of bulbs is over.
Plants that look good in the garden
and as cut flowers include:
calendula – newer varieties have
peach and cream shades – cornflower,
annual chrysanthemum,
godetia, larkspur, Nigella (Persian
Jewels is one of the best
mixes) and scabious.
Border plants to sow now
where they are to flower next
season include viscaria, alyssum,
Silene Robin White Breast,
perennial German statice (Limonium
tataricum) White Smoke,
annual Pink Pokers statice (L.
suwarowii) and candytuft (Iberis
umbellata).
Sow seed on a fine day, after
raking the soil surface to a fine
crumb and watering it. Cover
Ranunculus bulbs do best in deeply dug
soil enriched with decayed manure.
seed lightly. As seedlings appear,
thin them out so each plant can
develop and harden before cold
days and harsh winds settle in.
FRUIT
Strawberries can still be
planted, although the crop produced
next summer will be
smaller than that from young
plants set out earlier in the
month.
June or July is the best time to
transplant fruit trees and garden
shrubs, but it pays to get them
ready for the shift now. This
is done by wrenching, slicing
through the soil with a spade to
cut a portion of the roots.
To decide where to cut, go out
from the main stem or trunk to
about a-third of the distance the
branches spread, then cut about
halfway around the plant and
under the cut as far as the spade
will reach.
The uninjured roots maintain
the plant’s food supply, while the
severed roots form new rootlets.
When the plant is lifted in a
couple of months’ time, enough
fibrous roots will have formed
after wrenching to take in water
as soon as the plant is in its new
position.
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
Transform your laundry room
Is your laundry a place to throw clothes, do the
washing, but it’s a room you’d rather avoid? The
laundry is one of the hardest-working rooms in the
house, coping with a busy family’s endless washing
and the occasional set of muddy sports uniforms. It is
no longer a purely functional zone, but one that should
be thoughtfully designed. Buyers are looking for a
practical space that makes their lives easier.
Layouts are an important factor to consider, as they
should be tailored to both the available physical space
and the family’s needs. The most appealing family
laundries focus on ease and flow. Side-by-side washers
and dryers require more floor space, but often provide
greater capacity. Paired with a generous folding
bench, this can make everyday tasks quicker and less
stressful. In smaller family homes, stacked appliances
maximise vertical space, making them a great choice
for smaller laundry rooms. Using pull-out hampers or
slide-away ironing boards can utilise space while still
providing great functionality.
Storage remains a major selling point for family
buyers. Integrated laundry cupboards help hide
detergents, cleaning products, and linen, while
full-height cupboards are ideal for vacuums, brooms,
mops, and bulky household items. Open shelving is
also practical for storing frequently used items within
easy reach. Finishes need to be moisture-resistant and
durable to withstand a humid environment.
A deep sink is ideal for soaking stained clothes,
washing paintbrushes, or cleaning sports gear. Buyers
appreciate handy features such as pull-out faucets,
easy-to-clean tiled splashbacks, and wall-mounted
drying racks that keep benches clear.
Style doesn’t need to be abandoned in the laundry.
Consider the colours of your home and choose a
laundry colour that complements them. Would you
prefer bright, cheerful colours or a more grounded,
cosy atmosphere? You can also pair your chosen colour
with timber accents and woven baskets or plants.
Finally, good lighting makes a big difference. Bright
lighting over benches, combined with softer ambient
light, can make laundries more pleasant to use at any
time of day.
A well-designed laundry room can make life easier
and make household chores feel less of a burden.
