‘S**t, I hope he’s not inside’
BY KEES CHALMERS
That was the immediate thought
John Hill had when he went to
drop tomatoes off to his friend’s
place and found it in flames.
The Lake Terrace Rd house
in Birdlings Flat was engulfed
by fire and black smoke was
pouring out of it.
“I thought, ‘s**t, I hope he’s
not inside’,” Hill, 72, told Bay
Harbour News.
But fear quickly turned to
relief – his friend was outside
making a futile bid to fight the
fire with a bucket of water.
Hill joined in, helping his
friend battle the blaze, which
started shortly before 4pm on
Thursday last week, with the
bucket which they filled with
water from a duck pond on the
property.
But any remote chance of
beating the fire evaporated
when the pond ran dry.
“That was hopeless, but still I
tried,” he said.
It took five to 10min for the
fire to tear through and destroy
the house.
Fire and Emergency NZ said
the blaze was caused by a
damaged lithium ion battery
pack.
Hill said his friend had been
charging power tool batteries in
a bedroom.
The home owner declined to
talk to Bay Harbour News.
Hill, who lives around the
corner on Hillview Rd, said
before he arrived his friend
John Hill went to visit a friend and found flames coming from his house on Lake Terrace Rd in Birdlings Flat.
had tried to fight the fire with
a water blaster before the
property’s power went off.
The home owner was injured
when a window blew out and
pieces of hot glass and fire
caught onto his left arm.
A nurse who lives nearby
treated the burns with ointment.
Momentum building to brand Lyttelton
BY KEES CHALMERS
What should Lyttelton’s identity
be? A hippy paradise, a port
town or a hub for art and
culture?
The Lyttelton Harbour
Business Association is aiming
to answer that question at its
next Bizz Buzz Night meeting on
Tuesday.
The idea branched from its
most recent Bizz Buzz, where
property developer Alex Wang
spoke about being approached
by vape and liquor businesses
asking to rent out his new
building on London St. The new
apartment block building, which
replaced the old Harbour Light
Theatre, has space below for
businesses or community use.
Said business association chair
Sabrina Saunders: “He knew
that’s not what Lyttelton needed
or wants to be known as, so he
turned them away.”
“This next meeting is a
conversation of what do we
want, what businesses do we
want in the area, what do we
want Lyttelton to be in five to 10
years?”
Eruption Brewing co-owner
Steve Leftly says Lyttelton
should use what makes the town
unique.
“I see Lyttelton as a top visitor
location with a real thriving
creative hub of artists and a
totally different vibe than what’s
going on through the tunnel,” he
said. “I guess it’s just a matter of
projecting that it’s got it’s own
village feel.”
HAVE YOUR SAY: What do you think Lyttelton’s brand should be, and why? Email your ideas in 200 words or less to
kees.chalmers@alliedmedia.co.nz
Leftly is supportive of
accelerating the process for
getting Lyttelton Museum back
up and running.
“That’s a real
cornerstone
asset of the
history of
Lyttelton and its
formation. We’re
really interested
in trying to drive
that forward
somehow,” he
said.
Said Saunders:
“We're coming
Sabrina
Saunders
into an election year, we want
to be able to have a voice to go
to the politicians and say: This
is where we’re struggling, this is
where we could use some help,”
she said.
“Council’s going towards their
long-term plan strategy not this
Bells from Dead Video said Lyttelton is a place for people with niche interests to
express and hone their skills.
PHOTO: KEES CHALMERS
year but the year after and it's
important for us to have these
conversations so that we can
voice our needs.”
Dead Video store worker, Bells,
grew up in Lyttelton and said it
is a place for people with “niche”
interests to hone their skills.
“People have come to
Lyttelton to practice their art
forms, whether that’s setting
up a really specific hobby store,
Japanese/Māori fusion food at
Super (restaurant). It’s all really
specific and done well by local
people,” she said.
“I feel like our brand is just
local.”
The owner of the Super
restaurant on Norwich Quay,
Sahni Bennett, said one of
Lyttelton’s strong points is
residents do not worry about
how the town is perceived by
the rest of the world.
“I think it’s a really solid
platform for people to nurture
their individual selves without
being pulled in the direction
of any kind of norm, because
there is no norm here,” Bennett
said.
She would like to see more
short-term accommodation and
more investment in Lyttelton
Harbour's marine life. But she
does not want “awful copy and
paste” houses built.
Super front of house worker,
Sofia Heke, is a fashion designer
and would like to see more
support for local artists.
“Everyone’s always saying
it would be nice to turn
something into a dedicated
space,” she said.
Heke was also against the
gentrification of Lyttelton.
“I wouldn’t like the idea of
modern, yuck apartments. I
would hate for it to become a
town that’s really expensive to
live in,” she said.
Saunders believes Lyttelton is
a melting pot of various things
and it should be embraced.
“It’s (Lyttelton) growing, I feel
like it's got a buzz around it.”
Whitelock bringing pro athlete
Success has followed Adam
Whitelock from the rugby
field to real estate. Whitelock
speaks to Kees Chalmers about
his post rugby career and the
importance of hard work
Hard work has defined Adam
Whitelock’s life – whether
preparing to start in midfield
for the Crusaders or helping
someone buy their first home.
Now a real estate agent with
Bayleys Sumner, Whitelock was
the office’s top salesperson for
2024/25, a year after moving into
the branch.
He finished his rugby career
in 2017 after three seasons with
Bayonne in France’s Basque
region.
At 29, and expecting his first
child with wife Tiffany, he
decided it was time to return
home and focus on family.
“It was a big change leaving
rugby, it’s a massive part of my
journey and I still love it, but it
doesn’t define me, I’m more than
just a player,” he said.
Whitelock knew the transition
would be challenging but
believed professional sport had
prepared him well.
“It’s always in the back of your
mind, you’ll have to find a job at
some stage, but it’s still important
while you’re playing rugby
to make the most of it.
“You learn so much around
hard work, teamwork and getting
on with people, a lot of those
Adam Whitelock at his desk in the Bayleys Sumner office. He believes his experience as a professional rugby player with Canterbury,
the Crusaders and French club Bayonne provided some transferrable skills for his new career in real estate. PHOTO: KEES CHALMERS
skills are transferable.”
The couple settled in Sumner,
where Tiffany is from. Whitelock
initially worked in dairy farming
in North Canterbury and then
in rural banking for two years
before moving into real estate.
“I didn’t know exactly what
I wanted to do, but I knew I
wanted to achieve in the next
career,” he said.
“I had some friends who were
quite successful and I probably
liked that the harder you work,
the more reward you could get.
Perhaps I take that from rugby,”
he said.
He gained his real estate
licence and began in Bayleys’
Christchurch office four years
ago, starting in rural property
before moving into residential
sales.
Early last year he shifted to
the Sumner office to focus on his
local community and be a name
for people to trust when selling
or buying their house.
That move paid off, with
Whitelock named the branch’s
top salesperson for 2024/25. Still,
he says the process matters more
than the accolades.
“You make your calls, you give
prompt communication back,
you know your details and listen,”
he said.
“It’s a big decision to sell or
buy, a lot of emotions, so you’ve
got to have a bit of empathy.”
He aims to repeat the achievement
this year while growing his
profile and team. But balance
remains important.
He ensures he makes enough
time to spend with Tiffany and
their three children – Sophia,
Louis and Henry – and prioritise
his own health.
Most mornings begin at 5am
with a run before helping get the
children ready for school, before
heading in to the office.
“In those first few hours, if
you’re controlling your day then
your days are set up, your weeks
are set up and your years are set
up,” he said.
“I probably learnt that process
through rugby – planning
your week, executing it and then
reviewing it to see where you can
get better, celebrate some wins,
and then do it again.”
He is currently preparing to
run in next month’s Christchurch
Marathon.
Resilience developed in professional
sport has also carried over
into Whitelock’s career.
“It’s good to reflect on things
that might not go well, they’re
sometimes your biggest
learnings.
mentality to real estate career
“You’ve got to go through a
few things so you come back
stronger.”
For Whitelock, the reward
comes from helping others rather
than any personal recognition.
He is active in the community,
sponsoring the jerseys for the
Sumner Wave premier side and
supporting Cure Kids NZ initiatives
alongside South Island
engagement lead Will Hall.
He also serves on the Crusaders
alumni committee, which has
raised more than $200,000 for
YouthHub Christchurch over the
past two years through its annual
Hall of Fame event at Te Pae Convention
Centre.
“It feels good. When I was
younger I had a lot of opportunities
and support, so if it helps
young kids, it’s the right thing to
do,” he said.
Whitelock said he has found
real estate mentally harder than
playing professional rugby.
“There's so much to learn and
you are sort of at the mercy of the
economy, you never know when
you’re going to get paid,” he said.
Hard work was instilled early
in Whitelock and his rugby-playing
brothers Sam, George and
Luke, growing up on a dairy farm
in Palmerston North.
“We would all chip in and get
the job done. We would milk on
Christmas Day to help out, give
staff time off and cover until the
job was done,” he said.
He remembers a childhood
spent outdoors – hunting, fishing,
playing backyard rugby and
Adam Whitelock, left, was able to play alongside brothers Luke, George and Sam at the Crusaders.
watching All Blacks tapes with his
brothers.
“We were just normal kids
playing rugby.
“We all had a bit of talent, but it
wasn’t until we got to high school
(Feilding High School) we started
focusing that talent.
“When you start making rep
teams through hard work and
perseverance, then I guess those
goals were becoming more of a
reality that you could go on and
play professional rugby.”
At 18 he earned a place in the
Canterbury Rugby academy
while studying for an accounting
degree at Canterbury University,
suddenly training alongside players
like Richie McCaw, Dan Carter
and Aaron Mauger.
“That taught us how to train
professionally,” he said.
Three years later he debuted
for Canterbury against Wellington
and went on to play 56 games
and score 10 tries. He was part of
Canterbury’s run of six consecutive
NPC titles from 2008 to 2013.
He debuted for the Crusaders
in 2009, going on to play 55
games.
“It all happened pretty quickly,
I was 21, 22, living the dream
really.
“I was just lucky to be in a good
team where you could put your
best foot forward.”
Many of his more than 100
professional matches were alongside
his brothers. One standout
memory was a 19-14 win over the
Stormers in Cape Town.
“We beat a set of Stormers who
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
had a lot of South African players
at the time. We had come off
a couple of losses and it was a
tough game.
“All of us were on the field
and we’d all played well and in a
hostile environment against the
Stormers who were on fire.”
He remembered marking up
against Springbok great Bryan
Habana, who he said was the
most difficult to play against.
“I just remember he was super
fast and quick.”
Whitelock also played two seasons
for the All Blacks Sevens,
winning the World Series in 2014.
One highlight was scoring a try
at Twickenham – 61 years after
his grandfather Nelson Dalzell
scored there for the All Blacks
against England.
IN THE FAMILY
On Tuesday Adam Whitelock was the
real estate agent when his brother
Sam, a former All Blacks captain, sold
his Harewood property at auction for
$2.45 million.
The Johns Rd home attracted
competitive bidding before being
purchased by Eric and Louise
Wunderink, who said they were
delighted with their multi-milliondollar
acquisition.
He attributed his selection in
the side to his dedication and
work ethic.
“It’s probably a reward for all
the hard work and always being
fit. My strengths were fitness and
doing the basics – I wasn’t a super
fancy player,” he said.
Former Crusaders coach Todd
Blackadder once described him
as “one of the hardest workers
in this team”, praising his fitness
and drive to improve.
Whitelock met Tiffany through
former Canterbury coach Tabai
Matson.
They got engaged just before
Whitelock left New Zealand for
French rugby in 2014, chasing a
new experience.
Two concussions and a dislocated
elbow restricted his playing
time, but he said the experience
was still special.
“It was awesome. The club I
played for probably had the most
passionate supporters – 20,000 of
them would all sing,” he said.
Sea2Sky Challenge set
to soar again in Sumner
The Brad Richards Building Sea2Sky
Challenge is fast approaching, with this year’s
event taking place on Sunday 15 March in
Sumner. First staged in 2016, the event has
grown steadily and is now tracking at record
entry levels for the 2026 edition.
Based around Sumner’s stunning coastline
and hills, the Sea2Sky Challenge has built
a reputation for combining tough racing
with world-class scenery. In recent years,
organisers have introduced a revised 16km
trail run course, taking competitors along the
iconic Crater Rim Track from the top of Evans
Pass to Godley Head.
“The new route offers some incredible
views over Lyttelton Harbour, but it is more
technical,” says race director John Newsom.
“It also helps us to keep everyone safer by
separating the cyclists in the triathlon or
duathlon from the runners.”
The trail run has quickly become a highlight
of the event, with participants traversing
dramatic clifftops and historic coastal trails.
“You will be hard pressed to find a course
with better views anywhere in the world. The
trail run in particular from Godley Head is just
incredible,” Newsom adds.
All the traditional event options return in
2026. Athletes can take on the full triathlon
(swim, bike, run) or duathlon (run, bike, run),
alongside a junior and short course event.
There is also a 5–9 year olds’ aquathon (swim/
run), ensuring the day caters for all ages and
abilities.
Importantly, every event offers a team option,
including the ability to split the 16km trail run
in half, making the challenge accessible to
friends, families and workplace groups who
want to share the experience.
With entries well ahead of previous years,
organisers are encouraging anyone
considering taking part to secure their spot
soon.
The Sea2Sky Challenge is proudly supported
by local company Brad Richards Building,
along with PhysioSouth, Hub Cycles and the
Christchurch City Council, whose backing
helps ensure the event continues to thrive
as one of the region’s most scenic and
community-focused endurance challenges.
Surviving White Island
by Kelsey Waghorn
Surviving the unsurvivable. Healing from the
unhealable. This is an inspiring memoir of
physical and mental recovery, from someone
who lived through the Whakaari White Island
volcanic eruption. “I heard someone say, ‘Wow!’
And someone else exclaimed, ‘Look at that!’
I had my back to the crater. I turned around. The
moment I saw it, I knew what was happening.
The island was erupting. An enormous blackand-grey
plume was rising above the island,
already higher than the peak. It was beautiful
actually, set against the bright blue sky. Beautiful
and awful. Our radios were already blaring
something along the lines of ‘ERUPTION! TAKE
COVER!’ and I was yelling, ‘Everyone, with me!
Run!’” Kelsey Waghorn, a guide on the ill-fated
tour of Whakaari White Island in December
2019 tells her story for the first time, from
physical rehab for her life-threatening burns to
her mental struggle with PTSD. By a brave and
powerful woman with a wicked sense of humour,
this is an uplifting story of acceptance, strength,
perseverance and hope.
In Her Defence
by Philippa Malicka
The NEW Reese Witherspoon Book Club
pick, February 2026. A dark and gripping
courtroom drama for fans of Gillian
Flynn and Ripley
You’ve read about the Finbow trial. You’ve
seen it in the tabloids. You’ve watched it
when it appeared on the news, unable to
peel your eyes away from the spectacle of it
all. Famous, wealthy Anna Finbow, standing
in court, accusing therapist Jean Guest of
brainwashing her daughter Mary to access
to her trust fund. Jean, claiming that the
dark memories she’s helped Mary uncover
are real. That therapy has offered her a
chance to finally heal. I’ll tell you now that
you shouldn’t believe either of them.
Only I can tell you the truth. But everything
I say is in her defence.
The Last Poem
by Courtney Peppernell
A moving and heart-rending debut about a
grieving woman who moves to a charming
small town and finds healing, friendship and
love. Wren Paisley is living her dream: she’s
a successful author and poet, she adores the
New York brownstone she calls home and, most
importantly, she’s about to marry the love of her
life. But everything changes when her fiancée,
Lucy, dies in a tragic car crash that leaves a
young bystander paralysed. Unable to escape
the media frenzy, Wren goes on a road trip and
winds up staying in the charming small town of
Everston, Colorado. It feels fortuitous when she
learns that the local library holds a weekly grief
support group that reads, of all things, poetry.
Hesitantly, she joins, and slowly begins to build
community with the other members. Finally, she
can breathe again, and maybe even love again.
But how long can Wren keep her old life in the
rear-view? Will she be able to build a new life in
Everston, or will it all come crashing down when
old truths come to light?
Donors dig deep
to raise funds for
34-year-old’s
cancer treatment
BY KEES CHALMERS
An initiative to fund treatment
for a father battling an
aggressive form of brain cancer
is nearing its goal.
More than $41,000 has been
donated to Henri Kerr and his
family in two weeks.
The bid to raise $50,000 for
Kerr’s treatment was covered
by Bay Harbour News last
week when the total was about
$25,000.
The 34-year-old from Heathcote
is on the chemotherapy
drug, bevacizumab, which helps
slow down tumour growth and
has allowed him to stop taking
the powerful steroid dexamethasone.
But bevacizumab is not
funded in New Zealand by Pharmac
for brain cancer and costs
Kerr $2682 every three weeks.
Said his wife Anna Sheehan:
“It’s just been so crazy and
very overwhelming over the
weekend after the story was
released. We are totally blown
away, really, we never thought
that amount of fundraising
was possible. People have been
so kind, not only donating but
reaching out with really lovely
messages, people who are in a
similar situation or experiencing
the same thing.”
Their friends and family
started a Givealittle page two
weeks ago to help Kerr, Sheehan
and their three-year-old daughter
Noa.
Eighteen months ago a large
tumour was found on Kerr’s left
partial lobe.
“We were just so shocked, a
large tumour was the last thing I
thought. It felt like being hit by a
bus,” said Sheehan.
Two days later, the tumour
was removed and further tests
revealed it was a highly aggressive
and fast growing primary
brain tumour.
Then late last year an MRI scan
showed another tumour and
radionecrosis from the radiation
therapy. They removed a large
amount of treatment effect and a
small tumour. After the surgery
the doctors recommended he
start taking bevacizumab.
Henri Kerr and his daughter Noa in hospital.
Their friends have also organised
a concert on March 27 at The
Loons, Lyttelton, to continue fundraising
for Kerr’s treatment.
His mother Bjorg sells baked
goods from a stall outside her Bridle
Path Rd house every Saturday
to raise money for her son.
Battery blamed for destructive blaze
› From Page 1
Budgies and cockatiels in the
house perished.
Another Lake Terrace Rd
resident saw the smoke and
called the fire service.
Four crews from the Little River
Volunteer Fire Brigade were
called to the blaze, with cover
from Lincoln, Wigram, Spreydon
and Redwood.
Akaroa fire chief Mark
Thomson said it took about
three hours to get the fire under
control.
It flared up again at 7.22am
the next day, despite being
extinguished and firefighters
keeping watch on the property
overnight.
Hill said his friend had been
sitting in his living room watching
TV when he smelled smoke.
He went to have a look in one of
the bedrooms and saw a curtain
had caught fire.
He then tried to put it out
himself.
“Just a few minutes later the
bloody panes were going out
the bedroom back windows and
out the roof,” he said.
Hill said his friend had owned
the Birdlings Flat house since the
1970s.
He was in shock as they both
watched the fire destroy his
home.
Hill, who has lived in Birdlings
Flat for 15 years, is now feeding
his friend’s ducks and chickens –
and ensuring people stay off the
property.

Coastal Luxury. Resort Living. Absolute Sun.
56 Governors Bay Road, Cass Bay
4 beds | 3 baths | 5 toilets | 1 dining | 2 lounge | 2250sqm land | 460sqm floor | 6 car garage
Perched in the heart of scenic Cass Bay, this architecturally designed masterpiece at 56 Governors Bay Road is far more than just a residence; it is a lifestyle curated for those who
value both scale and soul. Our owners spent over a decade securing this specific site because they knew it to be the warmest, sunniest, and most protected spot in the area.
Built with a meticulous focus on solar gain, the home sits 5° west of North, ensuring the massive 460sqm floor plan remains bathed in natural light and thermal warmth throughout
the year. The construction provides a beautiful environment that has proven its resilience while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic.
The design brief was to create a four bedroom family home that feels like a permanent holiday resort, where luxury meets "wetsuit-friendly" practicality. Every room is positioned to
maximise panoramic harbour views that stretch across the water to the rugged hills of the Banks Peninsula. The heart of the home features incredible indoor-outdoor flow, where
sitting room walls push back to reveal expansive decking framed by native beech trees. Whether you are hosting friends or finding a quiet moment in the "reading room" sanctuary,
the home offers a variety of "chill-out" spaces, both indoors and out, designed for both entertaining and intimate tranquility.
The master suite is conveniently located on the main living floor, serving as a private retreat with direct access to both the expansive main deck and a separate private courtyard.
This unique layout allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds: the vast, ever-changing water views from one side and the peaceful stability of the mountains from the other.
Upstairs, the remaining three bedrooms provide ample space for family or guests with another ensuite, and a full family bathroom servicing the top floor.
For those with a passion for adventure, the property offers rare infrastructure, including a substantial six-car garage with caravan-height access, specifically designed to house boats,
cars, and motorcycles. The lifestyle here is dictated by the elements; you can be from your garage to the water in just 90 seconds for a morning of water-skiing, kayaking, or paddle
boarding. Despite this feeling of coastal seclusion, you remain just 20 minutes (approx.) from the Christchurch CBD and only moments away from the vibrant cafes and Saturday
markets of Lyttelton. This is a rare opportunity to secure a tightly held piece of paradise where the local community is as warm as the northern sun.
Two-day title within
reach for Heathcote
BY KEES CHALMERS
Heathcote remain firmly in contention
for the Metro Premiership cricket twoday
title after a dominant outright win
over Riccarton on Saturday.
They now turn their attention to
Old Boys, with the first day of the
match starting at 10.30am on Saturday
at Heathcote Domain.
Heathcote have won five from
five in the two-day competition
and sit second on the table.
Sydenham lead on 72.25 points,
with Heathcote close behind on
70.36, well clear of third-placed St
Albans on 58.05.
Said player-coach Tyler Lortan:
“I’ve played in a lot of seasons where
this time of year ends up becoming a bit
of a dead rubber, but we’ve got quite a
bit to play for. There’s a lot of confidence
in the group.”
Despite being in the title race, Lortan
said his side was not getting ahead of
itself.
Tyler Lortan
“The main focus is on getting better, as
long as we do that, winning comps will
take care of themselves.”
Lortan said attention to detail and learning
from earlier matches would be key
against a strong Old Boys outfit.
“Old Boys are a great team,
they’re well drilled, really well
disciplined. It’s good to challenge
yourself against good teams and
that will definitely be the case.”
Heathcote were depleted on day
two against Riccarton, with four
players away at the Electric Avenue
festival and fast bowler Travis Muller
called up for Canterbury.
Lortan said he was pleased with
how the replacements stepped up to
complete the job set up the previous week.
Riccarton were bowled out for 121 in
their first innings. Heathcote replied with
205 for eight declared.
In the second innings, Riccarton made
147, leaving Heathcote 64 to win – a target
they chased down with seven wickets in
hand.
Finals hopes still alive
for Peninsula-Harbour
BY KEES CHALMERS
It is do-or-die for Peninsula Harbour
on Saturday as they seek a big win over
Ohoka in the final round to qualify for
the Canterbury Country premier
semi-finals.
Ohoka sit fourth on the ladder,
four points clear of fifth-placed
Peninsula. To overtake them, Peninsula
must either win by 50 or
more runs or chase down Ohoka’s
total within 34 overs.
Peninsula player-coach Tim
Gruijters thought his side was
dead and buried after Saturday’s
15-run loss to Oxford but is grateful
for a second opportunity.
“It’s given us a little bit of freedom to
just play and go for it,” he said.
“(The mentality) is to go out there and
have loads of fun, if we go out there and
score 250 and play like a team, that’s all
we can do.”
Gruijters said the side would take
confidence from their previous meeting
with Ohoka, when they chased down 155
with five wickets in hand.
Peninsula were without several key
players against Oxford, with brothers
Joseph and Will Williams and Tim
Tim Gruijters
Petrie representing Canterbury Country
in their Hawke Cup final against Bay of
Plenty at Bay Oval.
Country dominated the challenge in
Mt Maunganui, bowling Bay of Plenty
out for 94 before piling on 440 all
out to claim the cup for the first
time since 2023.
Joseph Williams and Petrie will
return for Saturday’s clash, but
Will Williams is heading back to
England to begin pre-season training
with first-class county side
Gloucestershire.
Peninsula sent Oxford in to bat,
and they posted 178 for eight from
45 overs. Peninsula’s top order
struggled, slumping to 33 for three.
Gruijters and captain David Neal
added 64 for the fourth wicket, with
Gruijters top-scoring with an unbeaten
59 from 80 balls. However, regular wickets
halted the chase and Peninsula were
dismissed for 163.
“Dave and myself batted really well,
but there were no other partnerships
during the game,” he said.
“I think the one thing that needs to be
addressed is making sure we don’t lose
wickets in clumps and be able to build
partnerships each time.”
Nearly 100 years later, the allure
of a Rolls-Royce remains strong
When you sit in the back of any Rolls-
Royce, you cannot deny that a sense of
elegance and status prevails.
It permeates through an aura of
understated refinement, and the older
the Rolls, the more refined one feels.
Even today, when one is spotted on
the road, it still attracts a fair amount of
interest as they are extremely rare.
One of the best examples still
gracing New Zealand’s roads is Denis
O’Rourke’s Rolls-Royce 25/30 enclosed
limousine, which began life as a chassis
on January 4, 1937.
The handmade aluminium and
English Oak coach was bought three
months later and combined with
modifications including the famous
Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet mascot that
all Rolls-Royce cars are universally
known for. The finished product cost
the original owners the princely sum
of £1987 10 shillings and 11 pence
(NZ$395,000 today, adjusted for
inflation).
It was bought as a chauffeur-driven
town car for Mrs Frances Salmon of
Kensington, London, after her husband
Alfred died in 1928.
She and her late husband were part
of the Salmon and Gluckstein dynasty,
owners of a famous tea and coffee firm,
L. Lyons & Co, and who also ran a chain
of high-class restaurants and tea shops
in London and later around the world,
until it was all wound up in 1994.
Stored during World War 2, the
limousine was finally sold by the family
to collectors in Illinois in 1982.
It passed through several other
collectors in the US before it was
returned to the United Kingdom in 2014,
where it was reconditioned in Wales.
‘Lady Lyons’ will be at the Avid Classic Brit & Euro
Canterbury Car Show on Saturday, March 7, at the
Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Wigram.
O’Rourke purchased it in 2015 after
spotting it for sale online.
The seller drove it from Wales to
Southampton docks, loaded it into a sea
container, which then travelled via Singapore
until it arrived eight weeks later at
Lyttelton.
There, O’Rourke simply unpacked it,
topped it up, put in a new battery and
drove it home from the port.
The Rolls-Royce 25/30 aptly named
‘Lady Lyons,’ is powered by a 4.257 litre,
six-cylinder inline, putting out 294 horsepower
at just 2000rpm.
“I had always wanted a Rolls-Royce,
and she now takes pride of place within
my small collection of classic cars,” said
O’Rourke, a former lawyer, Christchurch
city councillor and New Zealand First MP.
“It’s wonderful to drive, a pure privilege,
and everywhere you go, people stop
and look at you, wave happily and snap
photos of it on their phones.”
O’Rourke bought the Rolls to use in his
wedding car business, and the car is in
high demand because, “she’s an elegant,
classy lady, offering a very special ride
for any bride,” he said.
Peninsula-Harbour will be without the services of seamer Will Williams who is returning to England to
start pre-season training with county side Gloucestershire.
MOTORING
Mini Aceman JCW
delivers big energy
in a small package
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
An interesting twist on the
diminutive, high-performance
John Cooper Works (JCW)
3-door hatch we drove recently
is the quirky Aceman compact
urban SUV. It’s larger and more
practical than its pint-sized
sibling, while retaining plenty
of Mini character.
The Aceman comes in a threemodel
line-up, starting with
the $63,990 Classic, followed
by the more lavishly appointed
$66,990 Favoured. From there,
it’s a sizeable step up to the
$75,990 JCW EV reviewed here.
Remarkably, it comfortably
seats five people despite
measuring just over four
metres long and 1750mm wide
– dimensions that slot it neatly
between the Mini Cooper and
the Countryman wagon. Rear
cargo space is about average
for an EV of this size, offering
enough versatility for everyday
use.
Mini pitches the Aceman as
an expressive urban SUV with
compact proportions, and it
delivers on that brief.
The striking front end, strong
contours and functional twobox
design give it real presence.
In range-topping JCW form it
rides on 19-inch alloy wheels,
while LED headlights enhance
its distinctive styling. At the
rear, large horizontal surfaces
emphasise the vehicle’s broad
stance, with upright taillights
framing the centre section.
Three distinctive Matrix rearlight
graphics further showcase
the Aceman’s character.
A 54kWh battery and single
synchronous motor deliver
190kW of power and 350Nm
of torque, enough to sprint
from 0-100km/h in a brisk 6.4
seconds.
Low-speed pulling power is
strong, providing exhilarating
acceleration. In the larger
Aceman, however, power delivery
feels more controlled than
in the tearaway 3-door JCW
electric.
As with that model, an allwheel-drive
system would be
a welcome addition, helping
to rein in traction and better
manage the performance on
offer.
At a fast-charging station,
the battery can be boosted
from 10% to 80% in around 30
minutes. Mini claims a driving
range of just over 400km,
though in real-world use the
best I managed was around
330km – and no, I wasn’t driving
like Mad Max.
This modest range is a downside.
For longer journeys,
careful planning is required,
with at least one, and possibly
two, charging stops along the
way.
Inside, the cabin delivers
that unmistakable JCW vibe
in spades. Sports seats are
trimmed in vegan leather with
multicoloured knitted fabric at
the shoulders and red contrast
stitching. A knitted dashboard
surface, finished in a black-andred
pattern, pays homage to
John Cooper Works’ storied history.
Together, these elements
create a distinctive and cohesive
interior.
Mini Operating System 9
allows all driving functions to
be controlled by touch or voice,
with a colourful 240mm circular
centre display taking pride
of place.
The high-resolution screen
is a nod to classic Minis and
includes wireless Apple CarPlay
and Android Auto.
The interface feels familiar,
much like a smartphone.
Below the dashboard is a redesigned
toggle bar providing
easy access to key functions
such as the parking brake, gear
selector, start/stop switch and
volume control. Navigation destinations
and radio stations can
be saved for quick access, while
the head-up display projects
key information directly onto
the windscreen in the driver’s
line of sight.
A comprehensive suite of
driver assistance systems supports
the driver in a wide range
of traffic situations.
Twelve ultrasonic sensors
and four surround-view cameras
enable features such as
adaptive speed and distance
control for stress-free urban
driving.
Navigation is enhanced by
3D visualisation and an augmented-view
function, while
Parking Assistant Plus can even
locate and manoeuvre into a
parking space for you.
Safety is equally well covered,
with radar-based systems
including adaptive cruise control,
lane-change warning with
blind-spot detection, and rear
cross-traffic alert with brake
intervention. Driving Assistant
Plus adds further steering and
lane-keeping support.
Mini Experience Modes allow
drivers to tailor the vehicle’s
behaviour, adjusting steering
response and traction-control
thresholds to suit their mood.
A precise damping system with
pre-stressed stabilisers improves
steering accuracy, while throttle
response can be sharpened to
enhance the sporty feel.
The firm suspension strikes an
impressive balance between ride
comfort and exceptional road
holding. To JCW’s credit, enough
suppleness has been engineered
in to smooth out rough surfaces
and worn roads.
Ultimately, the Aceman JCW is a
testament to the talents of Mini’s
designers and engineers. They’ve
created a small, electrified
performance SUV bristling with
power, finely balanced handling
and plenty of feel-good driving
moments.
Sharp, responsive steering
COASTAL AUCTION SERIES
THURSDAY 12 MARCH FROM 4PM
Owners Have Moved - Must Be Sold
21 Van Asch Street, Sumner
3 bedrooms, 2 living, 2 bathrooms, 1 car garaging
Located in the heart of Sumner, this beautifully presented home offers an
immediate sense of calm and connection to its surroundings.
Original warmth sits comfortably alongside refined modern finishes, with
crisp interiors delivering a relaxed, beachside feel. Built in the 1940s, the
home was intelligently extended in 2011 by the owner at the time, an
architectural designer, who re-imagined the layout to maximise light, flow
and functionality. The result is a well-considered floorplan comprising three
bedrooms, primary suite with walk-in-robe, two bathrooms, two separate
living spaces and two distinct outdoor living zones.
Recent upgrades have further elevated the home, including new carpet,
fresh interior paintwork, engineered oak flooring and new TPO roofing to
the flat section completed in 2024. Double glazing (except back entrance
door), insulation, two heat pumps, a log burner and gas radiators contribute
toward year-round comfort with flexibility through the seasons.
Outdoor living is equally well considered, with a louvred, sun-drenched
front deck extending everyday living and entertaining, while the sheltered
rear garden provides an established setting for gatherings or quiet
afternoons. Framed by a soft hillside outlook, this space is complete with a
spa for unwinding and an outdoor fire - perfect for relaxed evenings with
family and friends.
Homes that combine a central Sumner position, coastal character and
beautiful interiors are rarely available. With the owners having moved
already, this property must be sold. Immediate possession is available.
Open Homes: Saturday 11am - 11:30am, Sunday 1pm - 1:30pm
Auction: Held from 4pm, Thursday 12th March 2026 at Sumner Surf Life
line to the breathtaking ocean views, while a solid American Oak staircase,
in-built cabinetry, over height ceilings and expansive glazing deliver an
immediate architectural impact.
Arranged across two levels, the top floor presents an elevated
accommodation lineup, with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, including
two ensuites and a Jack-and-Jill layout, ensuring a sense of space and
privacy for extended family and guests. The primary suite enjoys direct
