Two 8m-tall artworks which
the Crusaders helped to weave
have been hung on the walls at
The Youth Hub Christchurch.
David Havili, Sevu Reece,
Will Jordan, Scott Barrett,
Codie Taylor and Tamaiti
The Star, January 23, 2025
Williams were among the
volunteers who helped
handweave the giant panels.
The artworks were placed in
atrium of the Salisbury St hub,
which provides health, housing
and social services for
at-risk people aged 10-25.
The Star, January 23, 2025
The Crusaders joined volunteers
from businesses,
retirement villages and
churches to create the traditional
woven panels
(tukutuku) using cross-stitches
to show the land, berries,
plants, birds and water.
Inspired by traditional Māori
patterns, they represent a
young person’s development.
Youth Hub Trust chair Dame
Sue Bagshaw said the artworks
were a community project.
“We wanted our supporters
to be able to leave a real mark
on the building.
“The care and pride people
put into weaving these panels
has been incredibly humbling
and seeing them finally
installed in the atrium was a
very special moment for us.”
Sevu Reece, Will Jordan and Scott Barrett hand-weaving one of the panels.
Right – Dame Sue Bagshaw and Jordan in front of one of the completed panels
at Youth Hub Christchurch.
The panels symbolise the
journey of learning, growth,
and achievement (poutama)
young people take at the hub.
“The poutama design speaks
about striving and growth –
climbing the steps towards
your potential,” Bagshaw said.
Fundraising to complete the
hub’s second wing of supported
housing and communal
spaces, including a café, is
continuing.
The hub’s 22 bedrooms
house more than 50 young
people and have been fully
occupied since they opened in
February last year.
Want to sell your property well? In our opinion, here’s what you really
could/should do.
Just have a chat with Cameron Bailey and after listening to what you have to say
around selling your property, he will explain the process regarding how he and the rest
of Team Bailey would go about the best way to get it done. As Cameron’s clients, during
all the different stages of selling our house, we found the guidance and professionalism
offered by all the members of Team Bailey exceptional, which resulted in our property
being sold at auction after completing a successful three week marketing strategy. Just
like they planned. So after 40 years of home ownership, working with Cameron was by
far the most enjoyable and stress free of all the property transactions undertaken by us.
Far from home and fearing
A Kurdish woman living in
Christchurch fears for loved ones
in Iran as violence escalates and
communication lines collapse.
She talks to Dylan Smits
Farah keeps her phone nearby
with the ringtone turned up at
all hours, waiting for the rare
calls that might come from her
family in Iran.
Using only her first name out
of fear for her family’s safety,
she says the calls have become
even more precious as war and
unrest grip the country.
With an internet blackout and
phone calls into Iran shut down
by the regime, Farah can only
learn how her family is doing
when they are able to call her –
and even those connections are
unreliable.
“I hardly have news from
my relatives. My parents can
call me sometimes. I know my
city was bombed as well and
it was very stressful for me.
You know, if anyone was hurt
or died. My family is okay but
three civilians have been hurt
unfortunately.”
Her family’s calls carry risks
for them, so Farah carefully
avoids any political discussion
on the phone in case authorities
are monitoring.
“Sometimes my parents call
me at 1am and I just want to
make sure I am able to pick the
phone. I am so glad my job is
Farah has made a life for herself in Christchurch over the past 12 years but worries for her family who still live in Iran.
so flexible, and I’ve got amazing
co-workers with me that are
really understanding if I need
to be on the phone.”
Farah, who has lived in
Christchurch since 2014, is
Kurdish and says her family has
long experienced oppression
under the Iranian regime.
Kurds make up about 10%
of Iran’s population and are
often targeted by authorities
“I was happy but I
wanted to cry at the
same time. It was
hard for me to believe.
He was exactly like
a dragon to his own
people, and the dragon
had to go.”
Farah, after learning of the
death of Iran’s Supreme
Leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei
for political and cultural
repression.
Her distrust of the government
hardened when she was a
teenager after her older brother
was imprisoned and tortured.
He had travelled to Turkey as
a young man and began military
training with the Kurdistan
Workers’ Party, commonly
known as the PKK.
The PKK is a controversial
guerrilla group fighting for an
independent Kurdistan and is
considered a terrorist organisation
by Iran, Turkey, Australia,
the European Union, the United
States, and New Zealand.
“He did not do any fighting,
just training, but when he
returned they put him in jail for
several weeks.
Working for
a greener future
starnews.co.nz The Star, March 12, 2026
for the safety of her family
“He came out with scars and
they burnt his body in many
different places, and he was
hanged upside down. He was
hurt a lot. It was a deep punishment
to make sure he’d never
forget,” Farah said.
In what was the toughest time
for the family, Farah’s father
begged local authorities not to
execute his son, pleading he
had been a naive young man
who did not know any better.
Seeing the effects of torture
on her brother shaped Farah’s
views of the regime.
Like many other Kurds in
Iran, Turkey, Syria and Iraq,
Farah dreams of an independent,
democratic Kurdish state.
Despite the uncertainty
of what comes next in Iran,
she feels a sense of hope for
her people after the death of
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei in a US-Israeli strike.
“It was like a very mixed
emotion. I still remember I was
happy but I wanted to cry at the
same time. It was hard for me
to believe. He was exactly like a
dragon to his own people, and
the dragon had to go.”
But the violence has also
come at a heavy cost.
The bombing campaigns have
struck close to home, with civilians
injured in the city where
Farah grew up.
Several weeks ago, during
the crackdown on anti-government
protests, her best friend’s
brother was shot dead by
Smoke rises over Iran’s capital Tehran as US and Israeli aircraft continue to pound the city.
security forces – among an estimated
more than 30,000 killed.
“He was only doing Kurdish
dance in the street, just seeking
freedom. He had a little son,
a very beautiful family, a very
happy life.”
Farah left Iran to escape the
restrictive laws woman face
such as enforced hijab (the
headscarf worn by many Muslim
women), and for better job
opportunities which are not
always available to the Kurdish
minority.
Although her parents are
against enforced hijab, she
remembers they always made
PHOTOS: GETTY
sure she wore it in public, otherwise
she could have been
questioned by police or even
arrested.
“Being Kurdish, we don’t
wear hijab at home or in our
culture, but we always had
to wear it and cover up when
on the street, at schools or
Kurdish women at a rally in Paris
celebrate the death of Iran’s Supreme
Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior
Iranian officials in Israeli-American
airstrikes.
at universities. It makes you
unhappy as a girl. You want to
live freely.”
Moving to Christchurch was,
she says, a breath of fresh air.
She started out studying mathematics
and physics, and is now
a New Zealand citizen.
“One of the first places I saw
was Hagley Park and the lovely
scenery there. Christchurch
actually reminds me a bit of
home because of the Port Hills
and the type of buildings.”
The early years were lonely.
“I had no choice but to adjust.
Kiwis have always been amazing
to me, very open-minded
people.
“I honestly don’t have a single
bad experience of living in New
Zealand and I had been paid
back for working very hard for
Kiwis.”
Grant approval throws lifeline to historic tug
BY KEES CHALMERS
Mike Bruce’s dream of seeing
Tug Lyttelton out on the harbour
again is getting closer to being
realised after a $44,000 grant
was approved last week.
The historic tug has been
hauling ships and hosting
weddings since 1907, but a
broken boiler has kept it tied up
at the wharf for the past twoand-a-half
years. Repairs are
expected to cost at least $220,000.
The funding from Lotteries
NZ will go towards a feasibility
study to determine whether the
tug can operate sustainably in
the future.
Bruce, the Tug Lyttelton
Preservation Society president,
said the study was an important
step forward.
“It’s an
intermediary step,
which is very
essential to us.”
The study will
be carried out
by Recreation,
Sport, Leisure
Consultancy.
Bruce said the Mike Bruce
timeline for its
assessment is not yet known.
He has been speaking with
potential funders but said many
were waiting for the results
of a feasibility study before
committing to the restoration.
“Without having the feasibility
study, no one would look at us,”
he said.
If the refit goes ahead, Bruce
believes the tug could continue
operating for another 50 years.
Tug Lyttelton has been tied up for the past two-and-a-half years due to a broken boiler which will cost at least $220,000 to fix.
He is confident the study will
show the vessel can remain
viable, pointing to the passing
down of knowledge among
current members, strong
community support and plans
to switch from coal to biofuel.
The society currently has
about $16,000 left in its account
for operational costs, mostly
leftover from charters during
SailGP in 2024.
Even while it remains tied up,
the society still spends about
$22,000 a year to keep the tug at
the wharf, covering insurance
and maritime fees.
Bruce said the past 15 to 20
years had been difficult for the
vessel, with the earthquakes,
Port Hills fires and Covid-19
limiting revenue.
Membership of the society
has halved while the boat has
been out of action, with about
100 members remaining.
“We lost income, we lost
opportunity, we lost a lot of
members,” he said.
Despite this, Bruce remains in
contact with former members
and is confident many will
return once the tug is operating
again.
The society has continued
working on the vessel while
it sits at the wharf, with 18
volunteers meeting every
Thursday to carry out any
maintenance.
It also sells Tug Lyttelton
merchandise, is preparing to
release a book and launched a
fundraising campaign late last
year encouraging 1000 people to
donate $10 a month.
Bruce said the campaign was
beginning to gain traction.
“I was about ready to pull the
plug on the society – either late
this year or very early next year
– when I looked at what was
coming up, what money we had
in hand.
“But now she’s got a potential
future.”
Bruce hopes to raise enough
money to repair the boiler and
get the tug back on the water by
late this year or early 2027.
Even if the study raises concerns,
he said the society would
not walk away from the vessel.
“We would address it and try
and overcome it and go back
again. You don’t just walk away,
not from a 120-year legacy,” he
said.
Bruce has been a member of
the preservation society since
1982 and has been president for
the last six years.
“It means everything. There’s
something about the ship and the
people it attracts that makes me
put in full-time hours as part of
the preservation society to get it
up and going again.
“You’re building a legacy for
future generations, built on
the skills and knowledge and
abilities of past generations.”
the village, so you can soak up some well-earned
‘me time’, as well as regular exercise classes to
keep you feeling your best. Of course, family and
friends are welcome to visit and will love the warm
and friendly atmosphere.
Thanks to its boutique size, Chatswood Retirement
Village is a place where connections are made;
where neighbours quickly become friends; and
where staff can take the time to foster genuine
relationships and understand each individual
resident.
The purpose-built retirement village provides the full
continuum of care, from assisted living in beautiful
apartments or studios through to rest home and
hospital care with the friendly and professional team
offering decades of experience.
The on-site premium care suites provide a unique
blend of independence and support, whatever your
needs. Each modern studio comes with an openplan
living room and kitchenette, en-suite, and a
private patio with garden views. You’ll also benefit
from your own telephone and Sky TV, as well as a
round-the-clock nurse call system, so you and your
loved ones will have complete peace of mind.
By choosing a care suite, you can stay in one
room for the life of your care cycle, even if your
needs change, allowing you to stay in the place
you love with the support you need. This flexibility
means residents can confidently plan for their
future, knowing they can remain within the same
community and receive the same high-level of care.
There’s also the option to remain close to your
partner or spouse, if they are also living at
Chatswood.
If you’re considering life in a retirement village, then
Chatswood welcomes you to come and visit and
see for yourself all that’s on offer to find out if it’s
the right fit for you.
