We are are an experienced team of 8 landscapers with most of our
guys having 20 plus years in the trade.
I started myself at the age of 13 in the landscape industry working
weekends for a local garden centre, and then progressed over the
years. I’ve spent the last ten years running a team of 15 but now
we’ve downsized so we can specialise more in the design and
build element and being able to be more focused on fewer builds.
We have built gardens for Chelsea gold winners, installed in the
grounds of Chatsworth, worked all over the country building sensory
gardens, and we pride ourselves on quality and passion and
thinking out of the box!
For a complete design and build package don’t

FEATURED THIS MONTH
D S
As we step into March, there’s a real sense of renewal
in the air - longer days, the first signs of spring, and
plenty of reasons to feel proud of our local community.
In this month’s edition we’re celebrating the people
and projects that are helping our area flourish.
Our community story shines a spotlight on St Giles
Churchyard (pictured above). Paul Johnson, the chair
of The Friends of St Giles Churchyard shares his
thoughts on how this coordinated transformation took
place and what the future holds.
We’re also thrilled to share uplifting news from a local
consultant with TEMPLESPA, Sarah Cardwell, who has
recently received a prestigious award. It’s always
wonderful to see local enterprise and dedication
recognised, and we extend our congratulations to
Sarah on this fantastic achievement.
Looking further afield, motorsport enthusiasts can
enjoy our preview of the Formula One 2026 season,
where new developments and fierce competition
promise another exhilarating year.
And because no issue would be complete without
something a little different, we’ve included a recipe
inspired by global superstar Taylor Swift - a fun treat to
try at home.
Finally, as The Doorsteppa continues to grow, we are
expanding our distribution and are looking for new
distributors in Marsh Lane and Spinkhill. If you’d like to
get involved, we’d love to hear from you and welcome
you to the team that helps keep our communities
connected.

Friends of St Giles Churchyard
A Quiet Transformaon in the Heart of Killamarsh
Tucked around St Giles Church in Killamarsh lies a place
many of us hold dear — a peaceful churchyard where
generaons are remembered and respected. Yet,
towards the end of 2024, it had become clear that this
special space needed some care and aenon.
And so, the Friends of St Giles Churchyard (FOSGC)
was formed.
St Giles is a closed churchyard, meaning there is no
longer space for new burials (with only very small
excepons). Responsibility for its upkeep rests with
North East Derbyshire District Council (NEDDC).
However, their dedicated grounds team looks aer
churchyards and playing fields across the enre district.
With only six scheduled visits a year — from April to
October — it was simply not enough during the peak
growing season. The grass kept growing, brambles
crept in, and the space began to feel undy and
unwelcoming. Change was needed.
A Community Effort
Meengs were held bringing together representaves
from the church, NEDDC, Killamarsh Parish Council,
members of the newly formed Friends group, and —
perhaps unexpectedly — the Probaon Service.
The Probaon Service coordinates the Community
Payback Team (CPT), made up of individuals carrying
out Community Service as part of court orders. There
were understandable quesons at the outset about
how effecve this support might be. Those concerns
disappeared almost immediately.
From their very first visits, the CPT proved
transformave.
Led by a highly capable supervisor, the team brought
energy, commitment and pride to the work; their work
ethic was immense. Although the individual ‘workers’
may change over me, the leadership remains constant
— and with weekly visits, their contribuon has been
invaluable.
Working
alongside NEDDC
operaves and FOSGC
volunteers, they have helped
massively in the effort to turn the churchyard around.
Residents vising the churchyard to pay their respects
have noced the difference. The feedback has been
warm and appreciave. The improvement has been
clear for all to see, with the CPT being a major factor in
this transformaon.
Looking Ahead
With the essenal clearance now under control,
aenon is turning to the next stage: enhancement.
An ecological survey is planned to idenfy important
“hotspots” for flora and fauna. These areas will be
carefully mapped, protected and enhanced. The aim is
to encourage biodiversity while maintaining the
tranquillity that makes the churchyard such a special
place. Wildflowers and sympathec planng will gently
enrich the seng without compromising its dignity.
Longer-term plans, subject to funding, include
improvements to pathways and the possible
introducon of addional seang — providing peaceful
resng spots for those vising loved ones.
Respect. Tranquillity. Ecology.
These three words guide everything the Friends group
does. The churchyard is not just a green space — it is a
place of memory, reflecon and community heritage.
If you would like to become involved, new members
are always welcome.

TAROTSCOPES
ARIES 21 March - 20 April
You enjoy the sanctuary of home and appreciate the efforts
you have made to make it so welcoming. Enjoy some down time,
savouring the wonders of the natural world. You may experience
a low ebb occasionally but keep your eyes open and appreciate
every gift, however small, that comes your way. An unexpected
event could leave you feeling as though your world is ending. It
isn’t! It's a new beginning offering a better, brighter, future.
TAURUS 21 April - 21 May
It’s been hard work, but it’s paid off. You should be quite
content with life. You’re encouraged to look at the past and
assess what went right and what not quite so much. You can now
give advice and help others along their way to success, and this
you do with a good heart. Prepare for much activity due to many
communications arriving from far and wide. You may have to think
on your feet.
LIBRA 24 September - 23 October
Fairness and balance in all matters is key here; anything
less will cause headaches, and more, further down the line. It’s
time for a fresh start, potentially on the career front, and you’re
encouraged to give any possibilities your full attention. Trust your
gut instinct with any offers that come your way and don’t let others
coerce you into something you don’t want to do. It’s time for you
to branch out on your own.
SCORPIO 24 October - 22 November
Time is money, or so they say; and time passes quicker
than we realise. You become aware of the things you want to do/
achieve and, somewhere within that, is a need enhance your
current skillset. You do, however, seem to be struggling with the
thoughts of ‘needing to do’ and ‘wanting to do’. Both are equally
important; one to feed the body, the other to feed the soul. Find a
way to balance the two.
GEMINI 22 May - 21 June
A busy month! Something touches your very soul and you
formulate a plan to get ideas off the ground. It might be worthwhile
seeking the input of someone with experience, knowledge, and
wisdom, as their advice will be invaluable on your road to success.
Others could well be impacted by your plans and, whether they
agree with you or not, you can only accept with good grace their
decisions. Go with the flow for now.
SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December
News reaches you causing a flurry of activity. For the most
part the news is good but there’s one piece of news which could
leave you in a quandary. What to do next? Take your time and
think how your actions will affect others and what impact it will have
on your personal standing in the world. What do you want to be
remembered for? Someone older offers wise council. Pay heed to
their words.
CANCER 22 June - 23 July
It’s time for change and some things need to be let go of
altogether. You’ll need to be firm but fair in your words and actions
otherwise there’ll be repercussions further down the line; but
providing everyone comes away with something, all should be
well. Prepare to blaze a trail that the faint hearted won’t,
necessarily, want to follow and that’s their problem. Throughout all
your efforts beware of not burning yourself out. Good Luck!
LEO 24 July - 23 August
Teamwork is all and your best chance of success is
remembering this as you embrace and give thanks for others who
offer help and guidance. It isn’t all about you! The Universe will
help propel you towards your goals but, ultimately, the effort
required is down to you. What are you waiting for? There may be
disappointments ahead but concentration on what’s going right will
further your cause. Past situations come to mind bringing clarity.
VIRGO 24 August - 23 September
You have sufficient experience allowing you to be confident
in all you attempt but don’t fall into the trap of becoming arrogant.
Allow others to have their say and give careful thought to how you
respond to what you’re hearing. Time spent in quiet contemplation
brings insight to your best way forward. One situation ends but
there’s nothing to fear. A better path is opening before you, and
you find yourself on the right track.
CAPRICORN 22 December - 20 January
You may need to take control at this time but fear not; you
have all the resources within you to be successful. Word of
caution though; don’t resort to manipulating others, nor allow
yourself to be manipulated. You may feel like a small cog in a very
large wheel, but your power comes from within and there are folk
around who not only welcome you gladly with open arms but offer
wisdom, knowledge, and support.
AQUARIUS 21 January - 19 February
You’re offered the opportunity to glide through life as you
contemplate events and how everything panned out. It’s as if the
sun has come out and is shining on you, and you, alone. This is a
time to nurture your inner child, let go of worries, and have fun. A
word of warning though; someone may try to manipulate you with
honeyed words and false promises. They could be ultimately
serving their own purposes only.
PISCES 20 February - 20 March
You should be full of life and ready to set the world alight
with your brilliant ideas. Fabulous! However, you might not have
factored in the thoughts of others. Listen carefully and accept
gracefully their input. They hold you in high regard and want you
to succeed and are trying to be helpful if, and when, they see a
pitfall. This isn’t the end of your dreams; merely a suggestion of a
need to tweak.

HISTORY
The Pauper of this Parish
Our lovely readers tell me that they enjoy the
Killamarsh Heritage Society History page each
month, and of course Killamarsh is steeped in so
much history.
So, this month I thought I would highlight a
hidden gem, which I know many people are not
aware of.
This is partly because it has been hidden from
view by shrubbery for quite some me, but now
the greenery has been cut back, and the gem is
there for all to see.
What is the hidden gem?
It is a tablet on the wall just on the right-hand
side of the porch at St Giles Parish Church. Due
to the age of the tablet, unfortunately it has
seen beer days and is looking rather sad, but
hopefully plans are being made to preserve it
for future generaons.
The inscripon on the stone on the outside of St
Giles Church reads :
To the memory of John Wright
A Pauper of this Parish
who died May 4 th 1797
in the hundred and third year of his age
He was of middle size, temperate and cheerful
and in the trying situaon of darkness, poverty
and old age
bore his infirmies with such Chrisan
meekness
as excited the benevolence of good men
and is here recorded as an instrucve lesson to
others
Revd. Christoper Alderson, B.D., P.P.P.
Anno domini 1797

CHAIR’S REPORT
Following a very wet winter, Spring is upon us and new buds of foliage are starting to show across
the village. The Parish Council is energised for the year ahead, focusing on providing improved
services and events, following the receipt of feedback from residents on their thoughts and visions.
One of these key events includes a revised focus on a Summer Festival in July, alongside other
community activities and events that are taking shape across Council facilities. We remain
committed to delivering for our community and while investing sensibly for the future of our village,
during 2026/27 we are faced with some very tough financial pressures. Despite these challenges,
we have aimed at keeping the Parish Council (Parish Precept) share of the Council Tax increase as
low as possible at 2.85%. This will be the first increase by the Parish Council since 2019, after
ongoing reductions and freezes since then.
We are now facing the final year of financial support for the leisure centre and are accountable
for the maximum cost against the subsidy reduction plan at £100k. This is to cover part of the
loss the centre is facing, having been agreed as part of the previously contracted investment
against Killamarsh Active, although this was only expected to be around £40k originally, cost
pressures have increased. This subsidy continues to support the Leisure Centre, despite it being
ahead of schedule on income generation according to NEDDC. Sadly, the lack of a reduction is
a result of rising costs of energy, staffing costs and increased taxation for the District Council,
much the same as what the Parish Council is also facing through 2026/27.
After reaching the advanced stages of the Neighbourhood Plan preparation, with an initial full
draft almost completed and a date to start the consultation process agreed, this was abruptly
halted due to changes in government policy and funding. This means without funding, we have
not been able to progress any further in the last year and is unlikely to change soon.
Frequent events including music entertainment, family activities and community fayres continue
to serve the community. In addition, our Good Companions events which entertain and bring
together our local senior citizens are popular and continue to receive exceptional feedback.
The precinct CCTV camera is in the process of being relocated to also cover Bridge Street and
the new street camera at the junction of Rowan Tree Road, Sheepcote Road and Walford Road
has been ordered. We are awaiting final testing for its installation. These changes and additions
will add to the already important cameras, which continue to help towards fighting criminal activity
and promote community safety in our village.
Work is also continuing to try and resolve the issues with the new Speed
Indicator Device on Rowan Tree Road, given the non-functioning device
having puzzled the supplier, with many attempts to correct the issues failing.
Hopefully a new resolution will be found shortly.
I would like to thank everyone for your continued support, and to highlight
the fact that the Parish Council works hard all year round to ensure we
have a village to be proud of. While there may be occasional challenges/
delays or the message doesn’t reach everyone all of the time, we remain
committed to ensuring we improve year on year.

‘Plotting the Plot’ - Article by Allotment Holder
As Spring approaches it's time to look forward to days out with friends,
family or just on our own. It is also a time to look forward to spending
those long warm sunny evenings (they do happen!) on an Allotment if you
are lucky enough to have one. Growing seasonal vegetables in a small
space isn't about feeding the whole village, it's about the enjoyment of
eating something that you grew yourself over a fairly long period of work.
I have an Allotment, and I love being there, although it's nothing like BBC's Monty Don's garden
we do our best in producing amazing Fruit and Vegetables. Wonky and odd looking (no that's
not me!) yet colourful vegetables are extra tasty in the knowledge that we've created these wonderful
pieces of nature. I like to grow Chilli plants in the Greenhouse and my Mother grows and
nurtures her Tomatoes. Sown from seed, these young plants at the beginning of April look like
they'll never grow.... But grow they do and the end result packs a mighty punch!
Potatoes are a firm favourite, we tend to plant "Pentland Javelin", "Maris Piper" and "Charlotte".
All perfect for planting in tubs if you have a back yard or patio. Potatoes are one of the other
easiest things to grow. Now here's an idea... You can even use a Bucket with a few holes at the
bottom for drainage. Grab some Compost and small bag of Seed Potatoes (Shop local in here
Killamarsh), half fill the tub with the compost, pop 3 or 4 decent sized Seed Potatoes in the tub
or Bucket (the more you put in the smaller the Potatoes you'll get, (less gives you more) fill up
with compost giving it plenty of water. Leave in the corner outside and within a short time you'll
see leaves, once these have died away say after 3 Months tip the bucket up and you'll have
some tasty Potatoes rolling around and ready for the pan.
On the Allotment, there are years of gardening knowledge and experience from my fellow
Allotmenteers. We meet up on evenings, sit and chat, do a spot work, "water up", then sit
and chat again. Times like these restores our mental health. It's so lovely to see a new
generation of Allotment holders arriving and asking questions about gardening and what to
grow; the same questions I asked when I first arrived! We often think about those who
have left working the Allotment for various reasons. If you are reading this, you know who
you are and we miss you!
Whether it's a back garden with a few grow bags or an Allotment, let's enjoy what we have
in 2026.

Playground & Parks Update
Parish Councillors met recently with North East Derbyshire District Council
to hear about their plans for parks and playgrounds in Killamarsh that are
owned by them. For example, some new playground equipment has been
ordered for Crofters Close and locations are being considered for a new
park. Consideration is also being given to improving a number of small
pocket parks within Killamarsh, for which further consultation with residents
will be done. Parish Councillors will work closely with NEDDC in the future
on potential joint projects.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the consultation for a new King Charles III playground
at High Moor. The Parish Council will know later in March if the grant application for the full cost to
install the playground has been successful.
High Moor Beacon
This year, Killamarsh will see the installation of a new Beacon at High Moor —
an exciting addition that supports plans for a future park and offers a new landmark
for the parish.
After a lengthy planning process, the Parish Council has secured permission to
erect a Beacon Brazier on the site. The structure has already been fabricated,
and volunteers from the Royal British Legion (Killamarsh Branch) are expected
to install it once the weather improves.
Beacons have long been used to mark significant national and local occasions.
Today, they serve as powerful symbols of unity, celebration, and remembrance,
bringing communities together during events such as jubilees, coronations, and
other national commemorations.
The new brazier will allow Killamarsh to take part in coordinated national beacon
lighting events and will provide a striking focal point for local celebrations. The
Parish Council looks forward to welcoming residents when the beacon is next lit.

Christmas Lights Feedback
Over the 2025 Christmas period, the change in direction with the new
Christmas lights saw an extended fix wired Christmas Light display on
Bridge Street and Sheffield Road, with the main Christmas Tree returning
to the courtyard of Copytec.
To ensure further investment, the Parish Council have started planning
early for Christmas 2026 with more new lighting being purchased early in
the year to ensure availability in December. The Parish Council have
managed to secure a better deal, which will help to meet the year-on-year
solution to improve the displays while continuing to seek excellent value
for money.
Grit Bins
Grit Bins
The Parish Council and Derbyshire County Council provide grit bins across the village, which are
filled once a year, normally in December. Used correctly, this should be enough grit to last the entire
winter period. Additional refills will not normally be considered unless there are multiple and
prolonged periods of ice and snow, and then only in areas of most vulnerability and if resources
allow.
One tablespoon of grit is enough to cover one square metre of road surface. Over-application of
grit can lead to or accelerate the formation of potholes and cause
other damage to road surfaces.
Please note that grit from council grit bins is provided for use on
public footpaths and highways only. If grit is used on private property
or driveways, the bin may be removed.
Great Tommy Sleep Out 2026 - Royal British Legion (Killamarsh Branch)
Members of the Killamarsh branch of the Royal British Legion will be taking part in the
Great Tommy Sleep Out this March.
Yes — there is still a Legion branch in Killamarsh. While others nearby have folded, the
branch continues to support veterans and the local community. We don’t have our own
building, but we meet bi-monthly at Nethergreen Working Man’s Club and socially in local
pubs around the village.
The Great Tommy Sleep Out, organised by Royal British Veteran Enterprise (formerly
Royal British Legion Industries), raises awareness of veteran homelessness and funds to
help tackle it. Volunteers spend a night outdoors to highlight what, for some, is not a oneoff
challenge but daily life. Of course, we can go home to warmth and comfort afterwards
— many cannot. No one is saying this is meant to replicate what being homeless must
feel like, we can’t do that, as for us it would be optional, but for many this is a way of life.
We will be able to go home into the warmth and security of home and family, whereas for
many it is simply another cold morning before yet another bleak evening and night on the
streets or in the woods in a sleeping bag under canvas or in a tent!
With kind permission of the Methodist Church on Sheffield Road, we’ll be pitching our
small “encampment” in the heart of the village. There’ll be an information stand during
the day, and members will be on hand for a chat — whether about the Legion, service
days, or village life. Not all members are ex-Service, but all are committed to supporting
those who have served and their families.
Join us at the Methodist Hall from around 12 noon on Saturday 28 March through to
breakfast on Sunday 29 March. It may be cold, but we’ll soldier on in good humour. I’m
looking forward to it — even if the last time I slept out like this was over 30 years ago
during Operation Granby in the Gulf War.
We hope to see you there.

Parish Council Update: Thanks to Cllr Drabble for His Service
The Parish Council wishes to share an important update with residents.
After careful consideration, Cllr Drabble has taken the difficult
decision to stand down from his role on the Parish Council.
Increasing work commitments have made it increasingly
challenging for him to attend meetings and fully contribute in
the way he wished.
We would like to express our sincere thanks for the time, dedication, and
thoughtful input he brought to the Council during his period of service.
His commitment to the community has been greatly appreciated, and we
wish him well as he focuses on his professional responsibilities.
As required, North East Derbyshire District Council has been formally notified of the
vacancy and will shortly begin the official advertising process.

The last meal Jesus shared with his

TRAVEL
San Francisco & Las Vegas
Birthday Trip
Marking a milestone birthday with
a once in a lifeme trip is always
special, but celebrang our 50th in
the USA as a family felt extra
special. From the cool, coastal
charm of San Francisco to the
bright lights of Las Vegas, it was a
true bucket list adventure.
San Francisco: Wharf, hills and
home runs
We started with Virgin flights to
San Francisco and checked into the
Hotel Riu Plaza Fisherman’s Wharf.
It was a brilliant base: a great
locaon for exploring and a
fantasc breakfast that kept us
going all day. Staying near
Fisherman’s Wharf meant we
could easily wander to Pier 39 to
see the famous sea lions. Watching
them bask, bark and jostle for
space on the pontoons was simple
but unforgeable fun.
We took the ferry across to
Alcatraz for the audio tour, which
really brought the island’s prison
history to life, with amazing views
back to the city and Golden Gate
Bridge. To see more of the city we
used the Hop On Hop Off bus,
stopping at: Golden
Gate Park to visit the
serene Japanese Tea
Garden, Golden Gate
Bridge for those must
have photos, Union
Square for a spot of
shopping. A big highlight was
heading to Oracle Park to watch
the San Francisco Giants. The
atmosphere, the ballpark views
and the energy of the game made
it a real standout evening. Of
course, we also rode the famous
tram cars, clinging on as they
raled up and down San
Francisco’s steep streets. It is such
a classic way to experience the
city.
Las Vegas: Desert, lights and big
views
Next, we flew on to Las Vegas. The
May heat was intense, but with
plenty of shade, air con and pool
me, we coped. We took a day trip
to the Grand Canyon, vising Eagle
Point. Standing on the edge,
looking out across the vast, layered
rock formaons, was a true “pinch
me” moment and a major bucket
list ck. Back in Vegas, we explored
the Strip, dipping in and out of the
iconic hotels: Bellagio with its
dancing fountains, Caesars Palace
with its grand Roman style, The
Venean with its canals and “blue
sky” ceilings, The Cosmopolitan,
where we tracked down the
famous secret pizza place. There
was me for shopping too, with
everything from designer stores to
more casual outlets.
One of the absolute highlights was
seeing Michael Jackson ONE by
Cirque du Soleil. The mix of music,
dance and acrobacs was
incredible and felt like a real once
in a lifeme show. We also visited
the Mob Museum, for a fascinang
look at the city’s darker history,
and headed up the STRAT, the
tallest viewpoint in Vegas, for
sweeping views over the Strip and
out to the desert.
What made this trip so special was
that each of us had our own “must
dos”, and we managed to fit them
all into one amazing inerary:
sport, shows, iconic sights, history,
coast and desert. It was the
perfect way to celebrate turning 50
together: a US adventure packed
with memories that we will talk
about for years to come.
If you are dreaming of a similar
milestone trip, this kind of San
Francisco and Las Vegas twin
centre works beaufully and can
be tailored to their own wish list of
must see sights and experiences.
So, let me take the stress out of
booking your next adventure. All
you need to do is pack! I can’t wait
to hear your ideas so please give
me a call.

GARDENING
March is the first month of spring and a busy me
in the garden, but whilst the days are geng
longer, winter weather might be just around the
corner.
For gardeners, March 2018 reminded them that
whilst it is the first of spring, the days geng
longer, sunnier and oen warmer, winter
somemes refuses to give up her grip on the
weather, because that was the year of the Beast
from the East when temperatures plummeted to
sub-zero, snow fell and Siberian winds buffeted the
country, wreaking havoc on gardens. So, all
gardeners this month will be keeping a close eye
on the weather forecasts!
Vegetable plot
March is a great month to prepare your soil for
vegetables, weeding, digging over and adding wellroed
compost or manure to nourish and
replenish. Hardy crops such as spinach, broad
beans and peas can be planted outside as well as
early potatoes and onions.
Bare root planng
March is the last month that you can plant bare
root shrubs, which can include roses, hydrangeas
and forsythia, along with hedging shrubs such as
beech, privet or hawthorn. Bare root plants can be
inexpensive to buy and environmentally friendly as
they are oen grown outdoors in open ground,
requiring fewer resources. Because of the way
they are grown they suffer less from transplant
shock and cost less to package and transport. And,
when you plant them in your garden they start
growing straight away, giving them a head start on
plants that grow only when the weather improves.
Lawn care
For the past few months our lawns have taken the
brunt of the winter weather; they have endured
freezing temperatures, heavy rain, and possibly
snow lying thick for long periods of me, but this
month they are springing back to life. But they
could do with some tender loving care! Many
lawns have had to put up with a lot of
precipitaon since last autumn, so give them an
aeraon to improve drainage and soil structure!
Using a garden fork or aerator spike the lawn every
fieen cenmetres, and if it is sll very squelchy,
brush in some sharp river sand to help it dry out
and prevent waterlogging in the future. Trim up
the edges with a spade, knife, half-moon spade or
edger. And using a spring-ned rake give your lawn
a good raking to get out any moss and this should
allow your grass to grow more freely. But why not
leave some dandelions as these will feed any early
insects on the lookout for food.
Bulbs
As well as planng summer flowering bulbs such
as lilies, eucomis and gladioli, dahlias can also be
planted but they will need a well-draining sunny
spot for best results. And March is a great me to
remove seed heads from spring bulbs as they die
back to allow them to concentrate on preparing
for next spring.
This month you can also clean and dy your
greenhouse and cold frames, removing any
insulaon if the threat of frosts is receding, and
opening windows and vents on warm sunny days.

MOTORING
Keep on Driving
Why we’re keeping our cars for longer…
and what you can do to extend the
lifespan of your four wheels.
It’s not so long ago that changing
your car every three or four years
felt normal. PCP deals, shiny
upgrades and “treat yourself”
thinking made regular swaps feel
sensible, even expected. In 2026
though, that mindset is quietly
disappearing. Across the UK,
drivers are holding onto their cars
for longer than at any point in
recent memory.
The reasons are praccal first.
New car prices have climbed
sharply, insurance premiums
remain stubbornly high, and
servicing costs mean replacing a
vehicle now requires serious
jusficaon. Add in uncertainty
around petrol, hybrid and electric
futures, and many motorists have
decided that the car they already
own is the safest bet. However,
something else is happening too –
people are starng to reframe
what their car represents.
Instead of a disposable lifestyle
accessory, cars are becoming longterm
household assets again. Tenyear
ownership is no longer
unusual, mileage milestones once
dreaded are now worn with pride,
and there’s a growing confidence
in saying, “It sll runs perfectly -
why would I change it?”
This shi has changed how people
care for their
vehicles.
Preventave
maintenance
maers more,
with owners more
likely to invest in
proper servicing, ming
belts, suspension work and
tyre quality rather than pushing
problems down the road.
Cosmec upkeep has returned
too: valeng, paint protecon,
interior repairs. And this isn’t
being done to show off; it’s
because pride of ownership has
quietly returned.
Technology has played a role.
Modern cars are beer built,
more reliable and more
predictable than those of previous
decades. A well-maintained
vehicle from 2015 can sll feel
perfectly current for everyday life,
with sat-nav, Bluetooth and safety
features no longer aging as quickly
as they once did.
There’s also a psychological shi
at play. In a world of
subscripons, updates and
constant upgrades, keeping a car
long-term feels grounding. Aer
all, a BMW 6Series is just as
effortlessly cool as the new model
on the forecourt.
How to keep your car on the road
for longer:
Service on me – Prevents hidden
wear and catches faults before
they escalate.
protects engines from real-world
driving stress.
Watch your tyres – Correct
pressures and alignment reduce
strain across the car.
Fix small faults early – Minor
issues become major failures if
ignored.
Keep it clean – Dirt, salt and
moisture quietly shorten a car’s
lifespan.
Protect the baery – Short trips
drain modern systems faster than
you think.
Drive smoothly – Gentle
acceleraon and braking preserve
engines and gearboxes.
Warm up gently – Cold engines
hate hard driving in the first miles.
Read the dashboard – Warning
lights are early intervenons, not
inconveniences.
Sck with one garage –
Familiarity helps spot problems
before they become costly.
Change oil more oen – Fresh oil

A New Dawn
The 2026 Formula One Season
Buckle up, because the 2026 Formula One season
isn’t just a new chapter - it’s a completely different
book. As we approach the season opener in
Melbourne, the air is thick with ancipaon for
what is being called the most significant technical
reset in the sport’s history. For us in the UK, the
stakes have never been higher, with a grid
praccally dripping in Brish talent.
The Reign of Lando and the Brish Five
First things first: for the first me in years, we enter
a season with a reigning Brish World Champion
who isn’t named Lewis Hamilton. Lando Norris and
his McLaren team proved in 2025 that the "Papaya"
surge was no fluke. Seeing the #1 on a Brish car is
a sight to behold, but the compeon is closing in.
In a historic milestone, there are now five Brish
drivers on the grid - the most since 1996.
Lewis Hamilton enters his second year at Ferrari,
sll hunng that elusive eighth tle.
George Russell takes the undisputed lead at
Mercedes alongside Italian prodigy Kimi Antonelli.
Oliver Bearman enters a crucial second year at
Haas.
Arvid Lindblad, the 18-year-old sensaon, makes
his debut for Racing Bulls, marking him as the latest
"one to watch."
"Shape-Shiing" Cars and Sustainable Speed
If the cars look a bit different on your TV this year,
your eyes aren't deceiving you. The 2026 machines
are smaller, lighter, and more "nimble" - a direct
response to fan complaints that previous cars had
become too bulky.
The biggest talking point, however, is Acve
Aerodynamics. Gone is the DRS we’ve known for
years. In its place are wings that physically adjust
their angle during the lap - "Z-mode" for maximum
grip in corners and "X-mode" for blistering speed on
the straights. Combine this with a 50/50 split
between electric and combuson power, and you
have a formula that demands more strategy from
the drivers than ever before.
New Teams, New Rivalries
The grid has finally expanded to 11 teams with the
arrival of Cadillac, who bring a heavy-hing
veteran lineup of Sergio Perez and Valeri Boas.
Meanwhile, the legendary Audi makes its official
debut, having fully transformed the Sauber squad
into a German powerhouse.
Even the familiar faces have new hearts; Red Bull
begins its journey with its own engines backed by
Ford, while Honda has moved its experse to Aston
Marn. With so many new partnerships, the
tradional "pecking order" has been tossed out the
window.
Why You Should Watch
Whether you’re a lifelong petrolhead or a casual
viewer who caught the bug through Drive to
Survive, 2026 is the ulmate "level playing field."
No one truly knows who has built the fastest car
unl the lights go out in Australia. With five Brits to
cheer for and cars that look like something out of a
sci-fi movie, it’s going to be a spectacular ride.
