NEVER BEEN
TO THE
RACES?
This is the year
to try
There’s something uniquely special
about a day at the races. Whether
you’re drawn by the thrill of the
horses thundering past, the sociable
atmosphere, or simply the chance to
dress up and enjoy time outdoors,
a race meeting offers a wonderful
blend of sport, style and celebration.
For many, it’s not just about racing —
it’s a full day experience.
THE ARRIVAL:
ANTICIPATION IN THE AIR
From the moment you arrive, there’s
a sense of occasion. The sound of
hooves on turf during warm-ups,
the buzz of conversation and the
colourful movement of racegoers in
their finery create an unmistakable
atmosphere. Racecourses are often
set in beautiful countryside, so even
before the first race begins, you’re
surrounded by open views and
fresh air.
THE RACING:
EXCITEMENT UP CLOSE
Even if you’ve never followed racing
before, the spectacle is captivating.
Watching the horses in the paddock
beforehand — their power, elegance
and nervous energy — adds to the
anticipation. When the race begins,
the crowd’s attention turns instantly
to the track. As the field approaches
the finish, cheers rise and the
energy becomes infectious.
You don’t need to be an expert to
join in; many racegoers simply pick
a horse by name, colour or instinct.
It’s all part of the fun.
THE SOCIAL SIDE:
SHARED MOMENTS
A race meeting is as much about
people as horses. Friends gather
for picnics on the lawn, couples
enjoy champagne on terraces,
and groups celebrate birthdays or
special occasions. The intervals
between races offer time to explore
food stalls, enjoy a drink, or wander
the enclosures. It’s relaxed yet
lively — sociable without being
overwhelming.
STYLE & TRADITION
For many meetings, particularly
summer fixtures and Ladies’ Days,
fashion is part of the occasion.
Elegant dresses, tailored suits and
statement hats add colour and
theatre to the day. There’s no strict
requirement to dress formally (many
meetings welcome smart-casual),
but embracing the style is part of
the pleasure for those who wish to.
FOOD, DRINK &
INDULGENCE
Modern racecourses cater for
every taste, from casual street-food
stands to fine dining restaurants
overlooking the track. Whether it’s
strawberries and prosecco, artisan
burgers, or a sit-down lunch, food
is woven into the experience.
Sharing a drink while watching the
horses parade past is a simple but
memorable pleasure.
WHY YOU’LL ENJOY IT
A day at the races appeals on many
levels:
• Excitement — the live sport
and unpredictable finishes
• Atmosphere — shared
anticipation and celebration
• Scenery — beautiful outdoor
settings
• Sociability — time with friends
or family
• Occasion — a reason to dress
up and step out
Even those with little prior interest
in racing often find themselves
caught up in the moment. There’s
a timeless charm to watching
powerful thoroughbreds race
across turf while crowds cheer from
the rails — a spectacle that has
delighted generations.
A DAY TO REMEMBER
Whether you attend once a year or
make it a regular tradition, a race
meeting offers that rare combination
of sport, leisure and celebration. It’s
a chance to slow down, enjoy the
outdoors, and share the excitement
of live competition — all in a setting
rich with British heritage.
So next time the racecourse
gates open, why not step inside?
You may find a new favourite
day out waiting on the course.

Beyond the Classroom
When it comes to picking a school – or even just reviewing its
offering – it’s easy to get stuck on the academics...
The percentage of A*-A grades, the
number of 9s awarded at GCSE. But
a child’s experience of school life is so
much more than that; it’s about them
having the tools to find out who they
are, where their passions lie, and what
they want their futures to look like.
Independent schools recognise this and
enrich the lives of their pupils beyond the
classroom, offering them opportunities
to develop resilience and other important
soft skills.
The wellbeing of pupils is of utmost
importance, and the comprehensive
pastoral programmes in place at
independent schools reflect that. They
often embrace holistic approaches
to wellbeing, bringing school staff,
pupils and parents together to create
a collaborative support system. Many
schools are fortunate to offer in-house
counselling and mental health teams,
which are especially valuable amid long
waitlists for NHS support.
Independent schools also pride
themselves on their extra-curricular
provision, wraparound care and holiday
camps. Students can enjoy a wide range
of clubs – everything from the performing
arts and sports to debating and Model
United Nations. These provide countless
opportunities for pupils to discover new
passions, make friends, and build their
confidence. They also serve a practical
purpose of supporting busy parents who
may be struggling to access affordable
childcare provision.
A culture of service and civic
responsibility is embedded within
the independent sector. This means
students have plenty of opportunities
to support their wider communities,
developing their character along the
way. Lots of partnership programmes
between state and independent schools
involve peer mentoring, which sees older
students develop their communication
and leadership skills. Others involve
pupils volunteering for local charities
and organisations, making a positive
difference to other people’s lives.
Innovation is a key aspect of independent
schools; they are not tethered to the
national curriculum, which means they
can embrace different ways of doing
things. Forest schools, for example, are
becoming increasingly popular – taking
learning to the great outdoors. Perhaps
most importantly, independent schools
take care to move with the times,
ensuring they are well placed to address
new and emerging challenges facing
young people. Beyond traditional school
subjects, pupils can learn valuable life
skills in the form of financial literacy,
consent, and spotting misinformation, to
name a few.
Independent schools are known for their
strong alumni networks, and these play
an important role in supporting careers
guidance. Lectures and careers fairs
introduce students to new professions,
entrepreneurship opportunities, and
post-18 pathways. Alumni talks impart
valuable insights into a range of different
fields – and most importantly, how to get
into them. Students also have access
to hands-on support, from interview
preparation to developing presentation
skills.
Academics are important, but they
aren’t everything. In supporting the
development of pupils beyond the
classroom, independent schools are
broadening horizons and preparing
children for their adult lives.

ADAM HENSON
Why British Farming
Matters More
Than Ever
Farmer and BBC Countryfile
presenter Adam Henson has spent
decades championing British
agriculture and helping people
understand where their food comes
from. Ahead of appearances at the
Great British Farm Fest and the
Royal Three Counties Show, he
reflects on the realities of farming
today — from unpredictable
weather to global competition —
and why reconnecting people with
the countryside has never been
more important.
FARMING AT THE
MERCY OF NATURE
Farming may be supported
by increasingly sophisticated
technology, but it remains one of
the few industries still fundamentally
dependent on nature. That reality
became very clear last year on
Adam Henson’s farm.
“We had the driest summer in living
memory,” he explains. “We went
from a wet autumn and spring to
an incredibly dry summer, and our
crops really struggled. Yields were
down by about 30%.”
The sunflower crop was particularly
affected and eventually had to
be cultivated back into the soil.
But farming often has a way of
surprising you.
“We left a strip as a wildflower
margin, and the sunflower seeds
that hadn’t rotted germinated again,”
Adam says. “Suddenly we had this
beautiful strip of sunflowers.”
It’s a perfect example of the
unpredictability that defines
agriculture.
“You can have business plans and
strategies,” he says, “but there are
many things outside your control
— the weather, political change,
legislation. Farming constantly
reminds you of that.”
A COMPLEX
INDUSTRY UNDER
PRESSURE
Modern agriculture faces a
complicated set of challenges.
British farmers operate under
“You can have a
business plan,
but in farming
there are always
things outside
your control.”
strict environmental and welfare
regulations — standards that Adam
believes are essential. However, the
issue arises when imported produce
is grown under different rules.
“When imports come in that don’t
match our standards, it makes
competition difficult,” he says.
Disease is another ongoing concern.
Conditions such as Bluetongue and
Schmallenberg, spread by biting
midges, can affect livestock and
sometimes cause severe deformities
in unborn animals.
“It’s incredibly difficult when you’re
dealing with young animals,” Adam
says. “Birth should be a positive
moment, but sometimes it’s not.”
Meanwhile avian influenza has
caused major disruption to poultry
farms across the UK.
“If you run free-range poultry
you may not be able to let birds
outside,” he explains. “They have to
stay indoors for long periods, which
obviously affects the business.”
“A truly magical gem that surprises
and delights. One of the most peaceful
and restorative spaces I’ve had the
pleasure to spend time in.”

“There are many
farms doing
incredibly well
and producing
fantastic food.”
Adam says. “From that you can work
out the cost per hectare of growing
a crop.”
Despite these pressures, Adam is
keen to stress that agriculture is not
a single story.
MANY TYPES OF
FARMING
“The farming industry is incredibly
diverse,” he says, “It’s a bit like the
motor industry. You might have a
small family farm that’s been passed
down through generations, working
incredibly hard but making modest
returns. At the other end you
might have a very large operation
farming thousands of acres with
sophisticated machinery.”
Both are part of the same industry
and both play important roles in
producing food. “It’s easy to focus
on the negative stories,” Adam
says, “but there are plenty of farms
doing incredibly well and producing
fantastic food.”
For him, the key is maintaining
thriving rural communities. “We want
the countryside to be vibrant and
successful.”
Adam explains. “It’s connected to
satellites in space.” This technology
allows farmers to plant crops
with extraordinary precision and
efficiency. But the equipment
involved represents a significant
investment.
“A new combine harvester can
cost around £800,000,” he says. “A
400-horsepower tractor might be
£200,000.”
Many farms share machinery with
neighbours or rely on contractors to
manage those costs.
The technology also allows farmers
to analyse their operations in
remarkable detail.
“Our farm manager can see where
tractors are, how fast they’re going
and how much fuel they’re using,”
COMPETING IN A
GLOBAL MARKET
Despite Britain’s proud farming
heritage, the country produces only
a small share of global commodities.
“In the UK we produce about 3% of
the world’s grain,” Adam explains.
That means British farmers must
compete directly with producers
across the globe. “If a miller can
buy grain from Ukraine, Russia or
America more cheaply than I can
sell it, they’ll import it.”
Fresh produce creates further
challenges: “Strawberries, lettuces
and cucumbers have to be
harvested and sold very quickly,” he
says. “They don’t hang around.”
Meanwhile large quantities of
produce are imported into the UK.
“We bring hundreds of lorry loads of
salad from Spain,” Adam explains.
For him, this highlights the
FARMING MEETS
TECHNOLOGY
Modern farming is far removed
from the romantic image many
people still hold. Technology now
plays a central role in agriculture,
from satellite-guided machinery to
advanced monitoring systems.
“Our tractor that plants seeds
has a satellite dish on the roof,”

“If people

their food comes
from, they value it
far more.”
importance of supporting British
farmers whenever possible.
RECONNECTING
PEOPLE WITH
FOOD
One of Adam’s biggest concerns
is how disconnected many people
have become from agriculture.
“We don’t teach agriculture or
land management in the national
curriculum,” he says.
As a result, many people have
little understanding of how food is
produced.
“You could ask people how potatoes
grow, or how eggs are produced, or
how long a pig’s gestation period is
— and many wouldn’t know.”
Yet these are foods people eat every
day.“If we don’t understand where
our food comes from, it’s very hard
to make informed choices.”
CELEBRATING
FARMING AT FARM
FEST
Helping people reconnect with food
production is one reason Adam is
excited about the Great British Farm
Fest, taking place from 22–24 May
at Stoneleigh Park. The event aims
to celebrate British farming in a
fresh and engaging way.
“It will be quite different from a
traditional agricultural show,”
Adam says. Visitors will be able to
enjoy demonstrations, talks, food
experiences and entertainment. The
event will also feature appearances
from the Clarkson’s Farm team and
other well-known figures from the
farming world.
Adam will be attending with
Cotswold Farm Park, showcasing
rare breeds and running
demonstrations.
“We’ll be talking about sheep
production, dairy farming and beef
farming,” he says. “It’s a chance for
people to learn more about what
goes on behind the scenes.” Around
60,000 visitors are expected to
attend the three-day event.
FARMING FOR THE
FUTURE
Alongside producing food, many
farms are increasingly involved in
environmental stewardship. Adam’s
farm participates in schemes
such as the Sustainable Farming
Incentive, which encourage
biodiversity: “We grow large
areas of wildflowers for bees and
butterflies,” he explains. Other crops
are grown to provide seeds for
birds during the winter months. “It’s
about supporting wildlife while still
producing food.”
LOOKING AHEAD
With the Great British Farm Fest
and the Royal Three Counties Show
approaching, Adam has a busy few
months ahead.
But despite the challenges facing
agriculture, he remains optimistic
about the future: “There are always
pressures in farming,” he says. “But
there are also huge opportunities.”
For Adam, the key lies in
reconnecting people with the
countryside.
“If people understand where their
food comes from and appreciate
the work that goes into producing it,
that’s incredibly powerful.”
Because farming, he says, is about
far more than just food.
“It’s about the landscape, wildlife
and the communities that shape our
countryside.”

A CELEBRATION OF
Delicious, seasonal
recipes from the eggsperts
at Clarence Court
Spring
SPRING SALAD
Take ham and egg a little further
with the addition of crunchy British
asparagus, griddled gem lettuce and
a caper dressing. Frying ham may
sound a little odd but it works, and
it’s all topped off with a glorious softboiled
Clarence Court hen’s egg.
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Serves: 1
INGREDIENTS:
150g British asparagus spears
1 large Clarence Court hen’s egg
1 piece good quality ham
½ little gem lettuce
1 teaspoon baby capers
1 tablespoon cold-pressed extra
virgin rapeseed oil
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
Sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
Handful of rocket
METHOD:
Place a large frying pan or griddle
pan on a high heat. Put a small pan
of water on to boil.
Snap off the woody ends of the
asparagus and griddle the spears
for 5–7 minutes until just tender.
Boil the egg to your liking, then cool
and peel. When the asparagus is
nearly cooked, add the ham slice
and fry until golden and crisp.Add
the lettuce, cut side down, and cook
for 2–3 minutes.
To make the dressing, mix the
capers, vinegar and oil in a large
bowl and season well. Add the
rocket, cooked asparagus and
lettuce, then toss gently.
Transfer to a plate, top with the
egg and ham, and spoon over any
remaining dressing.

ORANGE
& YUZU
DOUGHNUTS

These are filled with fragrant yuzu
and mandarin custard and finished
with a dusting of orange sugar.
Prep time: 40 minutes
Cook time: 45 minutes
Serves: 10
INGREDIENTS:
For the custard:
1 vanilla pod
Peeled zest of 1 orange or mandarin
200ml milk
3 Clarence Court egg yolks
60g caster sugar
2 tablespoons cornflour
For the doughnuts:
600g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
225ml warm milk
40g caster sugar
2 x 7g sachets fast-action yeast
2 Clarence Court eggs, beaten
40g unsalted butter, melted
Finely grated zest of 1 orange
Vegetable oil, for frying and greasing
For the filling & coating:
140g caster sugar
Zest of 1 orange
2 tablespoons yuzu juice
100ml double cream
Candied peel, sliced
METHOD
Split the vanilla pod and heat with
the zest and milk until steaming, then
infuse. Whisk the egg yolks, sugar
and cornflour, then strain in the warm
milk. Return to the pan and cook
gently until thickened. Transfer to a
bowl, cover, cool and chill.
Mix the flour in a bowl. Combine
the warm milk, sugar and yeast
and leave until frothy, then add to
the flour with the eggs and melted
butter to form a dough. Knead on
a floured surface for 5–10 minutes
until smooth.
Place in an oiled bowl, cover and
leave to rise until doubled. Divide
into 12 balls, place on oiled trays
and prove again for 30 minutes.
Blitz the orange zest with some of
the sugar, then mix with the rest and
spread onto a tray.
Heat oil to 160–170°C and fry the
doughnuts in batches until golden.
Drain, then toss in the orange sugar
and leave to cool.
Stir the yuzu juice into the custard,
fold in softly whipped cream, then
transfer to a piping bag. Fill each
doughnut and finish with candied
peel.
METHOD:
Heat the milk, cream, vanilla and
orange zest until just boiling, then
remove from the heat. Whisk the
eggs and sugar until pale, then
gradually whisk in the warm cream
to temper. Return to the pan and
cook gently, stirring until thickened.
Reserve 250ml for the pudding and
keep the rest warm.

RANGE ROVER SPORT
Effortless Power with Polished Precision
There are cars that move you from
A to B, and then there are cars that
make every journey feel like an
occasion. The Range Rover Sport
P460e PHEV AWD in Dynamic SE
trim definitely sits in the latter camp.
It combines refined power, quiet
electric capability, and supreme
comfort in a way that feels deeply
satisfying the moment you pull away.
Visually, it strikes a brilliant balance
between athleticism and elegance.
The lines are smooth and confident,
the stance is muscular without
being aggressive, and the whole
thing radiates quiet authority. The
Dynamic SE subtly enhances
its sporty presence, adding a
tautness to its look that hints at the
performance beneath.
Inside, you’re greeted with an
interior that feels thoughtfully
curated rather than merely
assembled. The materials are toptier,
the seating perfectly cushioned,
and everything you touch feels
expensive. The cabin has that
hushed, cocooned quality that
Range Rover does so well—muting
the outside world and giving you a
sense of calm control.
The P460e powertrain is where
things get clever. Around town, the
electric mode delivers silent, effortless
gliding—a true luxury in urban traffic.
Switch to hybrid mode and the petrol
engine joins in smoothly, creating
strong, confident acceleration that
never feels strained. It’s not shouty
power—it’s graceful force.
The Stormer Handling Pack
deserves applause. Big SUVs often
feel heavy and slightly clumsy in
the corners, but this system tackles
that with adaptive dynamics and
rear-wheel steering that make the
Sport feel remarkably agile. Turn-in
is sharper than expected, body
roll is nicely contained, and the
whole driving experience feels more
precise than its size suggests.
Practicality is strong, but with
a premium twist. It’s not just
spacious—it’s comfortable in a way
that makes long-distance journeys
genuinely relaxing for both driver
and passengers. The boot and
cabin space will please families, but
it feels equally suited to business
travel, hotel arrivals, and weekend
escapes.
Charging is simple, and the usable
electric range means many daily
journeys can be completed without
using a drop of petrol—while the
combined hybrid performance is
always waiting for longer trips or
more spirited driving.
Verdict: the Range Rover Sport
P460e Dynamic SE is a luxurious,
poised, and deeply satisfying SUV
that combines prestige with real
capability. It’s ideal for drivers who
want refinement without shouting,
performance without drama, and
comfort that turns every journey—
from errands to road trips—into
something genuinely enjoyable.

BOROUGHBRIDGE
The historic rural town of Boroughbridge is
thriving, with new housing developments, high
levels of employment and excellent communication
and transport links to major centres...
At its heart is a traditional town centre populated with an array
of locally owned independent retail shops and businesses of the
highest quality. Supporting the town is an equally diverse range
of locally based businesses offering a wide variety of trades and
skills. The often reported ‘death of the High Street’ is certainly
not evident here — the town centre remains vibrant and buoyant,
aided by free street parking and a convenient central car park
operating an honesty box system.
Whatever product or service you may require, you will
almost certainly find it in and around the town. The variety of
independent shops is extensive, from gifts and interiors to fresh
produce, deli, bakers, butchers, cafés and more, alongside a
strong network of professional services including legal, financial
and estate expertise.
With easy access to the surrounding countryside — the Dales,
North Yorkshire Moors and the Wolds — and nearby landmarks
such as the Roman town of Aldborough, Boroughbridge is
an attractive place to live, work and visit. It’s a welcoming
destination where independent businesses continue to thrive.

BIG DECISIONS FOR THE HOME:
Investing Wisely in the Spaces You Live In
Making significant changes to your
home is rarely a spur-of-the-moment
decision. Whether it’s a new kitchen,
a light-filled extension or upgrading
your glazing, these projects
represent meaningful investments in
both your property and your day-today
life. Increasingly, homeowners
are approaching renovations
with a more thoughtful mindset
— choosing improvements that
combine practical value, longevity
and design quality.
Below, we explore several key areas
where considered investment can
transform a home.
KITCHENS: THE
HEART OF THE
HOME
For many households, the kitchen
remains the single most important
room in the house. It’s no longer
just a place for cooking; it’s
where families gather, children do
homework and friends linger over
drinks.
Investing in a well-designed kitchen
can significantly enhance how a
home functions. Layout is critical
— thoughtful zoning for cooking,
preparation and socialising can
make even modest spaces feel
generous and practical. High-quality
cabinetry, durable worktops and
energy-efficient appliances also
ensure the space performs well for
years to come.
Many homeowners are opting for
timeless designs rather than chasing
short-lived trends. Natural materials,
warm neutrals and carefully chosen
lighting help create kitchens that feel
calm, welcoming and enduring.
GLAZING:
BRINGING LIGHT
AND EFFICIENCY
Natural light has a powerful effect
on how we experience a space.
Modern glazing solutions allow
homeowners to dramatically
increase daylight while improving
insulation and energy performance.
Large sliding or bifold doors can
open kitchens and living areas
onto gardens or terraces, creating
an easy flow between indoor and
outdoor spaces. Roof lanterns,
skylights and floor-to-ceiling glazing
can also transform darker areas of a
home, particularly in extensions or
renovated period properties.
Advances in glazing technology
mean homeowners no longer need
to compromise on comfort. Highperformance
glass helps regulate
temperature, reducing heat loss in
winter while limiting overheating in
summer.
EXTENSIONS:
CREATING SPACE
THAT WORKS
When families outgrow their existing
layout, moving house isn’t always
the preferred solution. A welldesigned
extension can unlock
the potential of a property while
allowing homeowners to remain in a
neighbourhood they love.
Single-storey rear extensions are
particularly popular, often used to
create open-plan kitchen-living
spaces that connect directly with
the garden. Side returns, loft
conversions and garden rooms
also offer ways to expand without
dramatically altering the footprint of
the home.

FLOORING: THE
FOUNDATION OF
EVERY ROOM
Flooring is one of the most
overlooked elements in home
design, yet it has a profound impact
on the overall feel of a space. From
wide timber boards to stone tiles or
contemporary porcelain, the right
flooring can unify a home and create
visual flow between rooms.
Durability is an important
consideration, particularly in hightraffic
areas such as kitchens,
hallways and family living spaces.
Many homeowners are choosing
materials that combine aesthetic
appeal with practicality —
oka.com
engineered wood, luxury vinyl and porcelain tiles are
all popular options that balance beauty with resilience.
Underfloor heating is also becoming increasingly
common, offering discreet warmth and freeing walls
from radiators.
INVESTING WITH THE
LONG TERM IN MIND
Ultimately, the most successful home improvements
are those that balance lifestyle needs with long-term
value. By working with experienced professionals and
prioritising quality materials, homeowners can create
spaces that feel beautiful, functional and enduring.
Whether it’s a new kitchen, a bright extension or a
thoughtfully designed garden terrace, considered
investment can transform not only a property — but
the way it’s lived in every day.
PROMOTIONAL PARTNERSHIP
WHEN YOUR HOME
STARTS TO FEEL
OVERWHELMING...
IT MIGHT BE TIME FOR A
TIDY MIND
MOST OF US RECOGNISE
THE FEELING...
You open a cupboard and things
tumble out. The spare room
quietly becomes a storage space.
Paperwork piles up, wardrobes
overflow and suddenly your home
— the place that should feel calm —
starts to feel stressful instead.
Clutter rarely arrives overnight. It
builds slowly through busy lives,
family commitments and changing
circumstances. But when it reaches
the point where you don’t know
where to start, professional help can
make all the difference.
That’s where Rachel Cordingley of
A Tidy Mind Team comes in.
MORE THAN
DECLUTTERING
Rachel is a professional organiser,
but her work goes far beyond simply
tidying up.
“People often call when they feel
completely overwhelmed,” she
explains. “The biggest thing I hear is
‘I don’t know where to start.’ Once
we begin working together, that
feeling quickly changes.”
Working alongside her clients,
Rachel helps sort possessions,
create practical storage systems
and establish habits that make
everyday life easier. The result isn’t
just a neater room — it’s a home
that works better for the people
living in it.
Importantly, Rachel’s approach
is supportive and completely
judgement-free. Whether it’s one
cupboard or an entire house,
clients move at a pace that feels
comfortable.
PRACTICAL HELP FOR
REAL LIFE
Every home — and every situation
— is different. Rachel’s services are
tailored to real life and can include:
• Preparing a Home for Sale
or Moving – Decluttering and
staging a property so it appeals
to buyers.
• Paperwork & Home Offices –
Creating simple filing systems
that keep documents under
control.
• Bereavement & Downsizing
Support – Sensitive help when
clearing a loved one’s home.
• Storage Unit Clear-Outs –
Reviewing what’s truly worth
keeping.
• Hoarding Support –
Respectful, structured
guidance tailored to the
individual.
A CALMER
HOME, A
CLEARER
MIND
Many clients say the biggest
transformation isn’t just the house
— it’s how they feel afterwards:
“When people walk into a calm,
organised space they immediately
feel lighter,” Rachel says. “Clutter
takes up far more mental energy
than we realise.”
Rachel also ensures unwanted
items are recycled, donated or
repurposed wherever possible,
helping clients feel positive about
letting things go.

The process begins with a free,
no-obligation consultation,
giving you the chance to talk

BEAUTIFUL LIVING,
ROOM BY ROOM
Timeless solutions for every corner of the home.
Tiles were once seen as purely practical
— the dependable choice for kitchens
and bathrooms. Today, they’ve become
one of the most versatile and design-led
materials in the modern home. From spastyle
bathrooms and open-plan kitchens
to inviting living rooms, tranquil bedrooms
and seamless outdoor spaces, tiles now
help shape interiors that feel cohesive,
characterful and built to last.
This belief in combining beauty with
practicality has guided The Tile Company
since it was founded in York in 1988.
What began as a small, family-run
shop has grown into a trusted group of
Yorkshire showrooms, still owned and
run by the same family. Quality materials,
thoughtful sourcing and honest advice
remain at the heart of the business.
Now led by founder Mick O’Neill and his
sons, James and Jordan, the company
continues to source tiles, natural stone,
radiators and bathroom pieces from
around the world. Each collection
is hand-selected to balance design,
durability and value — materials chosen
not just for how they look, but for how
they perform in everyday life.
BATHROOMS THAT FEEL LIKE
RETREATS
Bathrooms remain the natural starting
point for many renovation projects. The
right tiles can completely transform the
mood of a space. Large-format porcelain
creates a sense of openness, particularly
in smaller rooms, while natural stone
introduces warmth and texture for a more
indulgent feel.
Coordinated wall and floor finishes,
feature niches and well-considered
heating all contribute to bathrooms that
feel calm, practical and quietly luxurious
— whether designed for busy family life
or boutique-hotel inspiration.
TILES FOR THE WHOLE HOME
Tiles are no longer confined to wet areas.
In kitchens, hard-wearing porcelain
floors and splashbacks provide durability
without compromising on style. In living
rooms, stone- and wood-effect tiles bring
depth and texture, pairing beautifully with
underfloor heating to create comfortable,
contemporary spaces.
Bedrooms benefit from the simplicity of
neutral tiles, layered with soft furnishings
and warm lighting for a relaxed,
uncluttered feel. Outdoors, porcelain
paving is increasingly popular for patios
and terraces, helping blur the boundaries
between inside and out.
The result is a home that feels connected
- practical in design yet effortlessly
stylish.
HEATING AS A DESIGN
FEATURE
Modern radiators have evolved beyond
their functional roots. Sleek vertical
styles maximise space in bathrooms
and hallways, while sculptural designs
add visual interest to living spaces and
bedrooms. Available in a wide choice
of finishes, they can either complement
a scheme subtly or provide a confident
contrast against tiled surfaces.
DESIGNED FOR REAL HOMES
Across its Yorkshire showrooms, The
Tile Company presents curated displays
designed to inspire — from complete
bathroom settings to contemporary tiles
and designer radiators. With collections
ranging from affordable essentials
to statement pieces, the philosophy
remains simple: great design should be
accessible.
More than 35 years on, the aim is
unchanged — to help homeowners
create beautiful, practical spaces they’ll
love, one room at a time.

NOTES FROM THE
Garden
What a wonderful time it is in the
gardening year! Lots of light, lots to
do and so much promise.
Jobs abound and even 10 minutes in the garden can be
useful - I keep a pair of gloves and some secateurs by the
back door to grab if I find a few spare moments - the only
danger is my 10 minutes often extends to 20 or 30…
Trees and shrubs will greatly appreciate some slow release
fertilise, as will roses, a light fork around and then apply your
fertiliser of choice.
Lifting and separating
border perennials will
give you extra plants and
improve the growth once
replanted- and you can
share the bounty with your
gardening friends too.
It is also time to deadhead
daffodils- but do leave the
foliage to nourish the bulbs
for next year’s show.
Once May is here and frost danger has past, out comes the
summer bedding in all of its glorious colours - so much to
choose from and so many colour combinations. From palest
pastels to zingy purple and orange combos - this is where
you can create your own work of art, whether a basket, a
window box or an entire garden.
This is such an exciting time in the garden- have fun and
enjoy it, and let that 10 minutes expand…!

THE IMPORTANCE OF
WRITING A WILL
ADVERTISING FEATURE
A Will isn’t optional—it’s the only way to
ensure everything you’ve worked for goes
to the people you care about...
Most of us have a quiet list of “life admin” we mean to get to one
day. It’s rarely dramatic — just the important things that feel easy
to postpone. Writing a will. Putting a Lasting Power of Attorney
(LPA) in place. Having the conversations about what you’d want
to happen if you couldn’t make decisions for yourself.
For many families in Harrogate, the family home is the biggest
asset they’ll ever own — and with property values often well
above £450,000, it’s easy to assume you’re “sorted” simply
because you’ve worked hard and been sensible. But good
planning isn’t just about what you own. It’s about making sure
what you’ve built is protected, and that the people you love aren’t
left dealing with uncertainty.
These steps are commonly delayed because they don’t feel
urgent. People tell themselves they’re too young, that everything
will automatically pass to a spouse, or that family can “just
handle it” if anything happens. In reality, the law doesn’t always
match family expectations. Without clear documents in place,
even straightforward estates can take longer to administer, cost
more, and create stress at a time when everyone is already
grieving.
It’s usually a real-life moment that prompts action: buying a
new home, welcoming a child or grandchild, supporting ageing
parents, or navigating a health scare. Sometimes it’s seeing a
friend’s family struggle with delays, disagreements, or practical
hurdles — and realising that silence creates problems, while
clarity prevents them.
A will sets out who should inherit, and who should deal with your
estate. An LPA lets you choose trusted people to act for you if
you’re ever unable to manage finances or make health and care
decisions. Together, they reduce delays, prevent confusion, and
give your family a clear plan to follow.
The most reassuring approach is to take advice early, calmly,
and on your own terms — not in a rush, and not in response to a
crisis. It’s not about being pessimistic. It’s about being prepared,
and making a quiet, practical decision that protects your family
and your home.
