SPRING SALAD
Take ham and egg a little further
with the addition of crunchy British
asparagus, griddled gem lettuce and
a caper dressing. Frying ham may
sound a little odd but it works, and
it’s all topped off with a glorious softboiled
Clarence Court hen’s egg.
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Serves: 1
INGREDIENTS:
150g British asparagus spears
1 large Clarence Court hen’s egg
1 piece good quality ham
½ little gem lettuce
1 teaspoon baby capers
1 tablespoon cold-pressed extra
virgin rapeseed oil
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
Sea salt and freshly ground black
pepper
Handful of rocket
METHOD:
Place a large frying pan or griddle
pan on a high heat. Put a small pan
of water on to boil.
Snap off the woody ends of the
asparagus and griddle the spears
for 5–7 minutes until just tender.
Boil the egg to your liking, then cool
and peel. When the asparagus is
nearly cooked, add the ham slice
and fry until golden and crisp.Add
the lettuce, cut side down, and cook
for 2–3 minutes.
To make the dressing, mix the
capers, vinegar and oil in a large
bowl and season well. Add the
rocket, cooked asparagus and
lettuce, then toss gently.
Transfer to a plate, top with the
egg and ham, and spoon over any
remaining dressing.

Beyond the Classroom
When it comes to picking a school – or even just reviewing its
offering – it’s easy to get stuck on the academics...
The percentage of A*-A grades, the
number of 9s awarded at GCSE. But
a child’s experience of school life is so
much more than that; it’s about them
having the tools to find out who they
are, where their passions lie, and what
they want their futures to look like.
Independent schools recognise this and
enrich the lives of their pupils beyond the
classroom, offering them opportunities
to develop resilience and other important
soft skills.
The wellbeing of pupils is of utmost
importance, and the comprehensive
pastoral programmes in place at
independent schools reflect that. They
often embrace holistic approaches
to wellbeing, bringing school staff,
pupils and parents together to create
a collaborative support system. Many
schools are fortunate to offer in-house
counselling and mental health teams,
which are especially valuable amid long
waitlists for NHS support.
Independent schools also pride
themselves on their extra-curricular
provision, wraparound care and holiday
camps. Students can enjoy a wide range
of clubs – everything from the performing
arts and sports to debating and Model
United Nations. These provide countless
opportunities for pupils to discover new
passions, make friends, and build their
confidence. They also serve a practical
purpose of supporting busy parents who
may be struggling to access affordable
childcare provision.
A culture of service and civic
responsibility is embedded within
the independent sector. This means
students have plenty of opportunities
to support their wider communities,
developing their character along the
way. Lots of partnership programmes
between state and independent schools
involve peer mentoring, which sees older
students develop their communication
and leadership skills. Others involve
pupils volunteering for local charities
and organisations, making a positive
difference to other people’s lives.
Innovation is a key aspect of independent
schools; they are not tethered to the
national curriculum, which means they
can embrace different ways of doing
things. Forest schools, for example, are
becoming increasingly popular – taking
learning to the great outdoors. Perhaps
most importantly, independent schools
take care to move with the times,
ensuring they are well placed to address
new and emerging challenges facing
young people. Beyond traditional school
subjects, pupils can learn valuable life
skills in the form of financial literacy,
consent, and spotting misinformation, to
name a few.
Independent schools are known for their
strong alumni networks, and these play
an important role in supporting careers
guidance. Lectures and careers fairs
introduce students to new professions,
entrepreneurship opportunities, and
post-18 pathways. Alumni talks impart
valuable insights into a range of different
fields – and most importantly, how to get
into them. Students also have access
to hands-on support, from interview
preparation to developing presentation
skills.
Academics are important, but they
aren’t everything. In supporting the
development of pupils beyond the
classroom, independent schools are
broadening horizons and preparing
children for their adult lives.

HEAD TO HEAD
Knowing the principles, background and values of the Head of any school can give an excellent
indication of what the school strives for. For prospective parents, meeting the Head can help them
make that difficult decision of which school to choose. We have asked two local Head teachers the same
searching questions so you can get to know them a little better...
EMMA
WATSON,
HEAD AT ST
CATHERINE’S
SCHOOL
When pupils look back on
their time at your school
in 10 or 20 years, what do
you hope they remember
most - and why?
The network for life. I hope they look back and realise that
the friendships they made here didn’t just get them through
school, they stayed with them into adulthood. I want them
to remember the people who shaped them, the moments
that built their confidence, and the feeling of being known,
supported, and genuinely cared for. If they carry that sense
of belonging forward, no matter what path they choose,
we’ve done something special.
If there were one book you would like every pupil to read
during their time at the school, what would it be, and what
do you hope it would give them beyond the classroom?
I’d choose a book that pushes them to think about
character, courage, and what it means to be a good
human being in a fastchanging world - The Hunger Games,
perhaps. The world they’re stepping into is a new normal.
What worked even ten years ago won’t necessarily set
them up for what’s ahead. So I’d recommend a book that
encourages a sense of perspective, humility, and agility that
will stay with them long after they forget the plot.
How do you believe a school should prepare young people for
a world that is changing so quickly, and what does that look
like in practice at your school?
We have to help them develop confidence in navigating
uncertainty. They need to understand technology, of course,
but also creativity, empathy, teamwork, and how to ask
good questions.
Our job isn’t to predict every shift that’s coming, but to help
them stay agile enough to handle whatever arrives. That means
giving them chances to lead, collaborate, fail safely, bounce
back, and try again. In practice, it’s a mix of stretching them
academically, giving them room to explore who they are, and
making sure they leave us able to think both for and with others.
What quality or mindset do you most try to nurture in your
pupils, and how do you see that emerging in daily school life?
A sense that they can achieve what they set out to do, but also
the understanding that no one does life entirely alone. I want
them to see the world as interconnected: that support, kindness,
and community matter just as much as ambition. And I want
them to see setbacks not as proof they’re not good enough, but
simply as part of the journey, often the part that teaches them
the most. You see it all the time in school life: in group projects
where they lift each other up, in moments of resilience after a
test that didn’t go well, in the way they celebrate one another’s
wins. That’s where the mindset grows, in the everyday.
JON MARLER,
HEAD OF
SCHOOL AT
PENNTHORPE
With 16 years in teaching
and a Degree in Primary
Education, I became Head
of School at Pennthorpe in
January 2026.
When pupils look back on their time at your school, what do
you hope they remember most?
I hope they remember being genuinely happy, that Pennthorpe
was a place full of warmth, energy and belonging. I want them
to look back with real pride, knowing they were surrounded
by people who believed in them, championed them and took
the time to truly know them. Most of all, I hope Pennthorpe
gave them the opportunities to discover their talents and the
confidence to be completely, unapologetically themselves.
If there were one book you would like every pupil to read
during their time at the school, what would it be, and what
do you hope it would give them beyond the classroom?
Without hesitation, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It is a book that
stays with you long after the final page. Through Auggie’s story,
children learn that everyone is fighting their own battle, that
bravery comes in many forms, and that kindness is never small
or insignificant. In a world that can feel noisy and complicated,
Wonder reminds us to celebrate what makes each of us unique.
If every child left Pennthorpe with that understanding tucked in
their heart, I would consider that a real success.
How do you believe a school should prepare young people for
a world that is changing so quickly, and what does that look
like in practice at your school?
The world our children will step into looks very different from
the one we grew up in, and that excites rather than daunts me.
At Pennthorpe, the best preparation isn’t simply academic, it’s
about building confident, resilient, curious young people who
know how to think and adapt. Our skills-based curriculum does
exactly that. In practice, that means Forest School, collaborative
problem-solving, performing on stage and exploring the world
beyond the classroom. We don’t rush childhood, we give
children the space to grow and leave us genuinely ready for
whatever comes next.
What quality or mindset do you most try to nurture in your
pupils, and how do you see that emerging in daily school life?
Curiosity - without question. A curious child is an engaged child,
and an engaged child never stops learning. At Pennthorpe, we
encourage children to ask questions, follow their passions and
lean into the things that light them up. But equally, I am a firm
believer in never ‘stealing the struggle’. It can be tempting to
smooth every path, but real confidence is built in moments of
challenge. When a child grapples with something difficult and
comes out the other side, that is where the magic happens. You
see it everywhere at Pennthorpe - in classrooms, on the sports
field, on stage. That blend of curiosity and determination is what
we nurture every single day.

Definition Aesthetics Celebrates 10 Years with New Horsham Clinic
Definition Aesthetics, a medically-led
aesthetics clinic and advanced training
academy, has opened a discreet location
in central Horsham town.
Following the success of its Crawley
clinic, and as the brand celebrates its
10-year anniversary next month, Definition
Aesthetics has expanded into Horsham
to meet growing demand across West
Sussex.
What began as a ‘Buy One, Give One’
initiative offering semi-permanent makeup
treatments to support patients undergoing
chemotherapy, has grown into a trusted
aesthetics brand with thousands of client
reviews and a strong local community.
Founder Laura Price established the
clinic with a vision of combining medical
standards with natural, confidencerestoring
aesthetic treatments.
The brand works with global industry
leaders Allergan and Galderma, ensuring
treatments are delivered using trusted,
clinically proven products supplied by
both companies. Definition Aesthetics
is also an approved provider of ZO Skin
Health, offering medical-grade skincare
programmes designed to support longterm
skin health and results.
The clinic specialises in injectable
treatments, including anti-wrinkle
treatments (Botox), dermal fillers
and regenerative injectables such as
Sculptra, which have grown in popularity
as patients experience facial volume
changes following significant weight loss,
including those using GLP-1 medications.
The Horsham clinic is supported by
experienced medical practitioners
with proven clinical backgrounds, with
onsite medical prescribers available,
ensuring the highest standards of safety,
prescribing governance and clinical
oversight. The clinic is committed to
ethical practice, patient education and
responsible treatment planning.
Consultations are available face-toface,
allowing each treatment plan to be
tailored to the individual. The philosophy
behind Definition Aesthetics is simple:
“Your face in trusted hands.” The aim is
always for patients to look well - not “well
done” - with results that enhance natural
features while maintaining authenticity.
Alongside its clinical services, Definition
Aesthetics operates a respected training
academy and works in partnership
with Champneys, delivering structured
education pathways for aesthetic
practitioners.

A NEW APPROACH TO SKIN
REJUVENATION WITHOUT BOTOX
OR FILLERS
Introducing NeoGen Nitrogen Plasma
ADVANCED SKIN REGENERATION
Many people want their skin to look fresher,
firmer and more youthful, but prefer not to rely
on injectables such as Botox or dermal fillers.
NeoGen Nitrogen Plasma offers a different
approach.
For most, the goal is not to look different - but to
restore the fresher, stronger skin they remember
from a few years ago.
NeoGen is an advanced skin treatment designed
to tighten, strengthen and regenerate the skin
using innovative nitrogen plasma technology.
Unlike traditional plasma pens or surface
treatments, NeoGen works throughout the
full thickness of the skin, stimulating collagen
and elastin production while maintaining the
integrity of the skin barrier.
By delivering controlled thermal energy to the
skin, NeoGen encourages natural structural
renewal. Over time this can lead to firmer,
smoother skin and gradual improvement in
wrinkles, pigmentation, sun damage and overall
skin texture.
NeoGen is particularly effective for areas
where skin begins to lose firmness with
age, including the delicate eye area, jawline
and neck. It can help improve concerns
such as loose eyelids, fine lines, pigmentation,
acne scarring and general skin laxity. One of
the most appealing aspects of NeoGen is that
results develop naturally as the skin regenerates.
Improvements continue for several months as
new collagen forms.
Downtime varies depending on the intensity of
treatment but most patients return to normal
activities within a few days.
NeoGen is now available locally in Worthing at
Ellie Amelia Medical Aesthetics, offering a nonsurgical
option for those seeking natural-looking
skin rejuvenation and long-term skin health.
Free 30 minute consultations are available
with Ellie, a qualified medical professional, to
determine whether Nitrogen Plasma treatment
is suitable for your skin concerns and to create a
personalised treatment plan.

VISITING
local Vineyards
Just a short journey from Horsham, the rolling countryside of West Sussex has quietly
become one of England’s most exciting wine regions.
Framed by sweeping South Downs
scenery and bathed in gentle
southern light, this picturesque
corner of southern England offers
the perfect setting for producing
exceptional English wines.
Blessed with fertile soils, a
temperate climate and the
moderating influence of the
nearby English Channel, West
Sussex provides ideal conditions
for grape growing. Its chalk-rich
soils — reminiscent of those
found in France’s Champagne
region — ensure excellent
drainage while lending a
distinctive minerality and finesse
to the wines.
Local vineyards around
Horsham are passionate
about sustainability, with
many embracing organic and
biodynamic practices. The result
is a collection of premium wines
that truly express the character
of the land. From elegant
Chardonnay and refined Pinot
Noir to aromatic Bacchus and
crisp Pinot Blanc, the region’s
wines are celebrated for their
bright acidity, vibrant fruit and
beautifully balanced structure.
For visitors, exploring West
Sussex’s vineyards is as much
about the experience as the wine
itself. Tasting rooms overlook
rolling vines, knowledgeable hosts
share their craft, and every bottle
tells a story of dedication and
place. Whether you’re a seasoned
wine enthusiast or simply looking
for a relaxed countryside escape,
a vineyard visit near Horsham
promises a memorable and
flavour-filled day out.

BIG DECISIONS FOR THE HOME:
Investing Wisely in the Spaces You Live In
Making significant changes to your
home is rarely a spur-of-the-moment
decision. Whether it’s a new kitchen,
a light-filled extension or upgrading
your glazing, these projects
represent meaningful investments in
both your property and your day-today
life. Increasingly, homeowners
are approaching renovations
with a more thoughtful mindset
— choosing improvements that
combine practical value, longevity
and design quality.
Below, we explore several key areas
where considered investment can
transform a home.
KITCHENS: THE
HEART OF THE
HOME
For many households, the kitchen
remains the single most important
room in the house. It’s no longer
just a place for cooking; it’s
where families gather, children do
homework and friends linger over
drinks.
Investing in a well-designed kitchen
can significantly enhance how a
home functions. Layout is critical
— thoughtful zoning for cooking,
preparation and socialising can
make even modest spaces feel
generous and practical. High-quality
cabinetry, durable worktops and
energy-efficient appliances also
ensure the space performs well for
years to come.
Many homeowners are opting for
timeless designs rather than chasing
short-lived trends. Natural materials,
warm neutrals and carefully chosen
lighting help create kitchens that feel
calm, welcoming and enduring.
GLAZING:
BRINGING LIGHT
AND EFFICIENCY
Natural light has a powerful effect
on how we experience a space.
Modern glazing solutions allow
homeowners to dramatically
increase daylight while improving
insulation and energy performance.
Large sliding or bifold doors can
open kitchens and living areas
onto gardens or terraces, creating
an easy flow between indoor and
outdoor spaces. Roof lanterns,
skylights and floor-to-ceiling glazing
can also transform darker areas of a
home, particularly in extensions or
renovated period properties.
Advances in glazing technology
mean homeowners no longer need
to compromise on comfort. Highperformance
glass helps regulate
temperature, reducing heat loss in
winter while limiting overheating in
summer.
EXTENSIONS:
CREATING SPACE
THAT WORKS
When families outgrow their existing
layout, moving house isn’t always
the preferred solution. A welldesigned
extension can unlock
the potential of a property while
allowing homeowners to remain in a
neighbourhood they love.
Single-storey rear extensions are
particularly popular, often used to
create open-plan kitchen-living
spaces that connect directly with
the garden. Side returns, loft
conversions and garden rooms
also offer ways to expand without
dramatically altering the footprint of
the home.

FLOORING: THE
FOUNDATION OF
EVERY ROOM
Flooring is one of the most
overlooked elements in home
design, yet it has a profound impact
on the overall feel of a space. From
wide timber boards to stone tiles or
contemporary porcelain, the right
flooring can unify a home and create
visual flow between rooms.
Durability is an important
consideration, particularly in hightraffic
areas such as kitchens,
hallways and family living spaces.
Many homeowners are choosing
materials that combine aesthetic
appeal with practicality —
oka.com
engineered wood, luxury vinyl and porcelain tiles are
all popular options that balance beauty with resilience.
Underfloor heating is also becoming increasingly
common, offering discreet warmth and freeing walls
from radiators.
INVESTING WITH THE
LONG TERM IN MIND
Ultimately, the most successful home improvements
are those that balance lifestyle needs with long-term
value. By working with experienced professionals and
prioritising quality materials, homeowners can create
spaces that feel beautiful, functional and enduring.
Whether it’s a new kitchen, a bright extension or a
thoughtfully designed garden terrace, considered
investment can transform not only a property — but
the way it’s lived in every day.

NOTES FROM THE
Garden
What a wonderful time it is in the
gardening year! Lots of light, lots to
do and so much promise.
Jobs abound and even 10 minutes in the garden can be
useful - I keep a pair of gloves and some secateurs by the
back door to grab if I find a few spare moments - the only
danger is my 10 minutes often extends to 20 or 30…
Trees and shrubs will greatly appreciate some slow release
fertilise, as will roses, a light fork around and then apply your
fertiliser of choice.
Lifting and separating
border perennials will
give you extra plants and
improve the growth once
replanted- and you can
share the bounty with your
gardening friends too.
It is also time to deadhead
daffodils- but do leave the
foliage to nourish the bulbs
for next year’s show.
Once May is here and frost danger has past, out comes the
summer bedding in all of its glorious colours - so much to
choose from and so many colour combinations. From palest
pastels to zingy purple and orange combos - this is where
you can create your own work of art, whether a basket, a
window box or an entire garden.
This is such an exciting time in the garden- have fun and
enjoy it, and let that 10 minutes expand…!

Wellbeing Lives Between Us
We often think of wellbeing as something personal - how healthy we are,
how active we feel, or how well we’re coping day to day. But much of our
wellbeing is shaped not in isolation, but through our ability to take part in
everyday life with others.
It shows up in small, easily missed
moments: when someone stops joining
their usual walk, hesitates on uneven
ground, or quietly opts out of activities
they once enjoyed. Often, it isn’t the
pain itself that changes life — it’s what
the pain prevents.
In a community like Horsham, these
subtle shifts matter.
WHEN EVERYDAY ROUTINES
START TO SHRINK
People rarely announce when something
feels harder. More often, they adapt
quietly.
A short walk becomes shorter. Playing
on the floor with grandchildren becomes
sitting on the sidelines. Popping into town
turns into staying at home “just in case”.
These changes can seem sensible in the
moment, but over time they can narrow
a person’s world, not only physically, but
socially too. Reduced movement often
means reduced connection, even when
that isn’t the intention.
WELLBEING IS A SHARED
RESPONSIBILITY
Supporting wellbeing isn’t only about
individual health choices. It’s also about
families, friends, and communities
noticing when someone’s world is
getting smaller, and encouraging
support before confidence and
connection are lost.
Foot and lower limb discomfort is
a common reason people withdraw
from everyday activities. When pain,
instability, or reduced confidence are
addressed early, people are far more
likely to keep doing the things that
matter to them: staying involved, staying
visible, staying connected.
SMALL SUPPORT,
MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCE
Often, it isn’t about dramatic
intervention. Simple, timely support —
whether that’s advice, footwear changes,
regular care, or reassurance — can help
people feel steadier and more confident
in their daily lives.
The aim isn’t to push people to do
more, but to help them continue doing
what already brings meaning: walking
with others, spending time out and
about, and feeling part of the rhythm of
community life.
CONNECTION IS PART OF
HEALTH
Wellbeing doesn’t exist in isolation.
It’s created in shared spaces, familiar
routines, and the freedom to move
comfortably within them. When we
support mobility, we’re also protecting
connection and the quiet threads that
hold communities together.
At Feet & Motion, we’re proud to
support people across Horsham
to stay mobile, confident, and
connected. We’re here for our
community. Quietly, consistently, and at
every stage of life.

Living Well, Living Connected
Why retirement is becoming one of life’s most
rewarding chapters...
For a new generation, retirement is no
longer about winding down — it’s about
opening up. More time, more freedom
and more choice are reshaping what later
life looks like, with lifestyle, wellbeing and
connection now firmly at the heart of the
conversation.
One of the biggest shifts is how people
are choosing to live. Downsizing, once
seen purely as a practical necessity, is
increasingly viewed as a positive step
forward. A well-considered move can
unlock equity, reduce the burden of
maintaining a larger home and create a
simpler, more enjoyable way of living.
The result? More time to spend on the
things that bring genuine pleasure —
whether that’s travel, creative pursuits or
simply enjoying a beautiful, thoughtfully
designed space.
Alongside this comes a more proactive
approach to financial planning. Rather
than reacting to change, many are
choosing to plan ahead — making
confident decisions about their future
while they are still in control. This sense
of preparedness not only protects longterm
security, but also allows individuals
to fully embrace the opportunities that
retirement can offer.
Yet perhaps the most defining element of
modern later-life living is connection. As
awareness grows around the impact of
loneliness, there is a clear shift towards
environments that actively foster social
interaction. Today’s communities are
designed with this in mind — from shared
lounges and landscaped gardens to
organised events and interest-led groups.
These are places where neighbours
quickly become friends, and where a
sense of belonging develops naturally.
Wellbeing, too, has taken centre stage.
The focus is no longer simply on care
when it’s needed, but on maintaining
health and vitality for as long as possible.
Access to fitness classes, walking
routes, wellness programmes and on-site
support all contribute to a lifestyle that
feels both active and reassuring. It’s
about living independently, but never in
isolation.
Importantly, the look and feel of these
communities has evolved. Gone are
the outdated perceptions of later-life
housing. In their place are light-filled
apartments, stylish communal spaces
and amenities that rival those of highend
developments. It’s a model that
recognises that expectations don’t
diminish with age — if anything, they
grow stronger.
For families, this new approach offers
genuine reassurance. Loved ones are not
only safe, but thriving — surrounded by
opportunities to stay engaged, active and
socially connected.
Ultimately, retirement today is not about
stepping away from life, but stepping into
it in a different, often richer way. With the
right environment and the right choices,
later life can be every bit as full, vibrant
and rewarding as the years that came
before.
