Fashion Tip 101:
Mastering Effortless
Chic With Layering
ByOmaDamian
Fashion lovers and style
influencers swear by one
unspoken rule: “Look good
and smell nice”. Many of
them adhere to that rule. A
lot has also mastered the art
of layering by starting with
a well-fitted base, adding
mid-layers for depth, and
finishing with a thoughtful
outer piece, you create visual interest
and a polished silhouette without looking
overdone.
Layering goes far beyond simply
throwing a jacket or shrug over a dress or
co-ord set. It also embraces thoughtful
details — like styling a textured satin scarf
with your favourite dress or jumpsuit to
add depth and interest. Current trends
encourage breaking away from the
ordinary and leaning into bolder, more
expressive looks. For a chic holiday outfit,
pair our Amber Satin Scarf with the Wilde
Modal Dress for an effortlessly polished
finish.
Meanwhile, the Chilly Days Wine
Sweater brings a vibrant pop of colour
to your wardrobe and offers endless
styling possibilities for beautiful layered
ensembles. Our stylists’ tip: wear the
Aliviya Embroidered Rust Top
underneath the sweater to create a rich,
dimensional look that feels both cosy and
refined.

RUNWAY REPORT
The Louis Vuitton
Resort 2025
Collection
A Symphony
of Colors
ByOmaDamian
Embodies the brand’s commitment to innovation and
luxury, seamlessly blending contemporary aesthetics
with its storied heritage. The craftsmanship in these
garments was extraordinary. During the preview,
Ghesquière mentioned he wasn’t creating haute
couture at Louis Vuitton—but at this level, he might as
well be.
It was evident in the fairytale-like shimmer of handembroidered
sequins and floral appliqués on dresses shaped
as simply as oversized T-shirts; in the astonishing intricacy of his
intarsia knitwear, including a slinky dress that looked as if cartoon
flames were licking it; and in the dramatic fans of leather and
metallic chains that adorned the show’s final looks.
The collection’s presentation in an evocative setting
underscores its narrative depth—a captivating exploration of
travel, identity, and self-expression that resonates deeply with
a global audience seeking both style and substance in their
fashion choices.

The Visionary Behind Lagos Fashion Week
& Her £1 Million Global Breakthrough
By Martina Akonthe
Omoyemi Akerele’s
journey
did not begin
with applause
or spotlights.
It began with
questions about structure,
access, and what African creativity
could become if given
the right platform.
She was driven by a simple
belief that talent deserves
opportunity. Not someday, not
abroad, but right where it is
discovered.
Rather than wait for systems
to change, Omoyemi committed
herself to building them,
guided by purpose, discipline,
and a deep respect for craft.
Her passion is rooted in

creating pathways, turning
creative potential into viable
businesses and ideas into
long-term impact. That conviction
would later shape a
movement that redefined
how African fashion is seen,
valued, and sustained... Only
then did Lagos Fashion Week
take form.
Lagos Fashion Week: Africa’s
Fashion Powerhouse
Lagos Fashion Week (LFW) is
now the annual fashion event
that draws global attention to
African creativity. Founded in
2011 by Omoyemi Akerele,
this runway and trade show
takes place for five days
between the end of October
and the beginning of November
in Lagos, Nigeria; most
recently at the Federal Palace
Hotel and surrounding venues
on Victoria Island, the city
that romances with fashion,
culture, and commerce each
season.
Originally a four-day schedule
showcasing local talent,
LFW has grown into Africa’s
largest fashion trade show,
attracting tens of thousands
of attendees, including designers,
buyers, media, and
fashion lovers from around the
world.
What started with thirty designers
has expanded into a
sixty-plus designer roster featuring
both Nigerian icons and
pan-African talent. Names
like Mai Atafo, Orange Culture,
Lisa Folawiyo, Iamisigo,
Kilentar, Emmy Kasbit, Fruche
and many others have strutted
down its runways, while brands
continue to secure international
stockists and collaborations.
The city buzzes during LFW
with off-site showcases, retail
activations, and cultural experiences,
turning Lagos into a
fashion ecosystem where style
meets business.
International guests have
also become part of the narrative.
American singer Ciara
made headlines in 2025 when
she attended and participated
in the event, celebrating
Nigerian fashion on a global
stage.
From Law School to Fashion
Revolution
Omoyemi Akerele’s path
to fashion was not the typical
runway story.
She studied Law (LL.B.) at
the University of Lagos and
went on to earn a Master’s in
International Economic Law
from the University of Warwick
in the UK. Initially, law seemed
her future; she even worked at
the prestigious firm Olaniwun
Ajayi & Co. from 2000 to 2003.
It is worth noting that the
pull toward creativity was
strong for Omoyemi as she
shifted into fashion, working
as a stylist assistant and then
senior style editor for True Love
Magazine.
From there, she co-founded
a styling and consulting
agency before realising that
Nigeria needed a larger platform,
a place where designers
could bloom, not just be
admired locally.
That insight sparked Style
House Files in 2008 and eventually
led to the launch of
Lagos Fashion Week in 2011,
a platform designed not just
to show clothes, but to build
careers, businesses, and economic
impact.
Vision & Mission: Fashion as
Business, Culture & Impact
Omoyemi’s vision for Lagos
Fashion Week has always
been bigger than glitz and
glamour; it is strategic and
systemic. She wanted to transition
fashion from a cultural
pastime into a serious business
engine for Nigeria and Africa,
tapping into talent, industry
structure, global market access,
and sustainable innovation.
Through initiatives like:
• Woven Threads — spotlighting
craft and innovation
• Green Access — supporting
sustainability-focused
designers
• Fashion Focus Africa —
mentoring emerging talent.
LFW doesn’t just show collections,
it builds industry infrastructure
and exports African
creativity to the world. In 2025,
Lagos Fashion Week won the
prestigious Earthshot Prize, an
international environmental
award, earning a £1 million
boost for its sustainability work.
Fashion, in Omoyemi’s
world, is about jobs, culture,

heritage and the environment,
not just runway applause.
And by that measure,
Lagos Fashion Week is
winning.
Who Shows at Lagos Fashion
Week?
As earlier mentioned,
Hundreds of designers have
been elevated through
LFW’s runway exposure, both
Nigerian and pan-African
creatives. Some of the most
buzzed names include:
• Orange Culture - redefining
African menswear
• Lisa Folawiyo - luxury Ankara
couture
• Iamisigo and Kilentar
- pushing modern pan-African
aesthetics. Including
guest designers from South
Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and
beyond.
These designers now
reach global media like
Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar,
Financial Times and gain
international buyers, solid
proof that the platform works
on both cultural and commercial
levels.
The Woman Behind the
Week: Omoyemi’s Life &
Influence
Omoyemi Akerele is more
than a fashion executive;
she is a global ambassador
for African creativity. She
sits on advisory boards for
international institutions, including
MoMA (The Museum
of Modern Art) in New York,
the Victoria & Albert Museum
in London, and the British
Fashion Council. She is also
recognised globally through
Business of Fashion’s Global

In 2021, she was apwww.glamsquadmagazine.com

Ambassador, a role that
supports fashion exporters
and positions creative
industries as export revenue

Omoyemi is married
to Tokunbo Akerele, and
they have three daughters.
Her family life, while
generally private, often
comes up in interviews
as her source of balance
and inspiration amid a
demanding global role.
Has Omoyemi Delivered
on Her Vision?
Yes! From humble
beginnings with limited
funding and infrastructure,
Lagos Fashion Week
now stands shoulder
to shoulder with global
fashion events, uniquely
African but undeniably
influential. It has:
• Expanded international
visibility for African designers
• Created global partnerships
and media
exposure
• Driven sustainability
initiatives that win global
awards
• Boosted economic opportunity
for creatives

Rising Star
Fisayo
Longe
and Her Bold Global
Fashion Influence
By Adewumi Victoria
In a fashion industry that often rewards conformity,
Fisayo Longe stands out for her fearless originality
and global vision. As the founder and creative force
behind Kai Collective, she has built more than a
fashion label. She has created a cultural movement
that speaks to confidence, individuality, and
modern African creativity on a worldwide stage.
Fisayo’s journey into fashion did not follow a
predictable path. With a background that blends
creative instinct and sharp business sense, she
approached fashion as both art and strategy. This
balance is evident in Kai Collective’s rise from a small
independent brand to an internationally recognised
name worn by celebrities, influencers, and styleconscious
women across continents. Her designs do not
whisper for attention. They speak boldly, celebrating
the female form while embracing colour, texture, and
striking silhouettes.
What sets Fisayo apart is her deep understanding of
identity. Her work reflects a generation of women who
are unapologetic about taking up space.
Through body-conscious dresses, sculptural cuts,
and vibrant prints, she tells stories of self-assurance and
empowerment. Each collection feels intentional, rooted
in emotion, and connected to real women rather than
fleeting trends. This authenticity has allowed her brand

to resonate far beyond its
original audience.
Kai Collective’s global
appeal lies in its ability to feel
both personal and universal.
While the brand proudly carries
African creative influence,
it avoids being boxed into
a single narrative. Instead,
it speaks to a worldwide
community of women who
see fashion as a form of selfexpression.
From London
to Lagos, New York to Paris,
Fisayo’s designs have found a
home in wardrobes that value
boldness and originality.
Beyond design, Fisayo
has also emerged as a
powerful voice for modern
entrepreneurship. She openly
shares the realities of building
a brand, from early challenges
to strategic growth decisions.

creatives to pursue their visions
with clarity and resilience. Her
transparency has built trust, making
her not just a designer to admire but a
leader to learn from.
In an era where fashion is
increasingly intertwined with social
media, Fisayo has mastered the art
of digital storytelling. She uses visual
platforms not merely to sell clothing,
but to communicate mood, lifestyle,
and attitude. Her online presence
feels curated yet genuine, reinforcing
the idea that confidence is the most
essential accessory. This approach
has helped Kai Collective cultivate a
loyal global community rather than a
passive customer base.
Fisayo’s influence also challenges
outdated perceptions of African
fashion. She represents a new
wave of creatives who are globally
minded, business savvy, and culturally
grounded. Her success signals a shift
in the industry, where African designers
are no longer positioned on the
margins but at the centre of global
fashion conversations. She does not
wait for permission or validation. She
creates, leads, and defines her own
standards.
As her brand continues to grow,
one thing remains clear. Fisayo
Longe is not simply following fashion’s
evolution. She is actively shaping it.
Her work reminds us that boldness,

transcend borders. In a world hungry
for originality and meaning, her voice
feels not only relevant but essential.

to what happens when creativity
meets courage. As the global fashion

December in Nigeria comes alive like
no other month, and this year was no
exception. From the streets of Lagos to the
parades of Calabar, the nation’s cultural
pulse beat strong with music, dance,
fashion, and vibrant energy.
In Calabar, the Calabar Carnival dazzled with
colourful floats, elaborate costumes, and rhythmic
performances, transforming the city into a moving
celebration of heritage and creativity. This year’s
carnival featured over 30 parade bands, each
bringing a unique theme and story, while thousands of
spectators lined the streets to witness the pageantry.
Meanwhile, Lagos came alive with the Eyo Festival,
where masquerades glided through the streets in white
flowing robes and traditional hats, blending history
and spectacle. The festival drew crowds eager to
experience Lagos’ rich cultural traditions, while street
performers and dancers added a modern twist to the
centuries-old celebration.
Adding to the excitement, the Shakara Festival
brought music, street performances, and youthful
energy, turning neighbourhoods into stages for
vibrant live shows. From Afrobeat rhythms to stylish street
fashion, Shakara showcased Lagos as a hub of rhythm,
style, and festivity.
Across the country, communities celebrated in their
own ways, from local cultural displays to music and
dance competitions, proving that Detty December is
more than a season, it’s a nationwide experience of
culture, connection, and joy.
Fun fact: Many of these festivals are now a magnet
for tourists and influencers, with visitors snapping
photos of elaborate costumes, flamboyant floats, and

FASHION ESCAPE
Street Style Spotlight:
Minimalist Luxe
Takes Over The
Streets of Abuja
By Adewumi Victoria
Street style has entered a new era, one defined not by excess but by restraint.
Minimalist luxe has quietly taken over the streets, reshaping everyday fashion with
an emphasis on clean lines, thoughtful tailoring, and an unmistakable sense of
confidence. This shift reflects a growing appreciation for simplicity and intention,
with style expressed through subtle details rather than bold statements.
Across urban spaces, outfits are becoming more refined and effortless. Crisp
shirts, fluid trousers, structured blazers, and softly tailored dresses dominate the streets,
creating polished looks without appearing overworked. Each piece plays a specific role,
allowing the wearer’s presence and posture to complete the look. Minimalist luxe thrives
on balance, proving that simplicity can be both striking and sophisticated.
Neutral colour palettes are central to this movement. Shades of white, beige, black,
grey, and muted earth tones create a calm visual language that allows fabric, fit, and
movement to stand out. These tones offer versatility and timelessness, making each outfit
feel relevant beyond seasonal trends. Rather than fading into the background, these
understated hues project confidence and quiet authority.
Tailoring has become the new form of expression on the streets. Well-cut suits are styled
casually, blazers are worn with ease, and trousers are designed to flow rather than restrict.
This focus on structure and fit elevates everyday dressing, blurring the line between formal
and casual wear. The result is a street style aesthetic that feels intentional, modern, and
effortlessly elevated.
Accessories in the minimalist luxe movement are carefully selected and never
overdone. Structured leather bags, sleek footwear, and delicate jewellery serve as
finishing touches rather than focal points. Each accessory complements the outfit,
reinforcing the idea that luxury lies in quality and design rather than quantity.
What truly defines minimalist luxe is the confidence of those who wear it. There is
a sense of ease and self-assurance that transforms simple outfits into powerful style
statements. These looks are not driven by trends or validation but by personal clarity and
comfort. The wearer, rather than the clothing, becomes the centre of attention.

Social Media & the “Clean Girl” Aesthetic:
Skin tints are a staple of the clean, minimal
makeup look dominating social feeds.
Influencers and beauty lovers credit tints for
giving that effortless, radiant skin effect without
looking “made-up.”
SPF & Skincare-Infused formulas lead the way
as consumers want multifunctional products,
and many 2025 skin tints now come with SPF,
niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and other skinbeneficial
ingredients — blurring the line between
makeup and skincare.
Here are some skin tint products:
ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40
A pro and fan favourite with niacinamide,
squalane, and SPF. Great for a lightweight, glowy
finish that combines skincare and makeup in one.
Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint. Loved
for its inclusive shade range and soft-blur effect,
perfect for a smooth, natural base.
Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint
A simple go-to for minimal makeup days with
sheer, natural coverage.
Henry London Super Smoother Blurring Skin Tint.
The makeup artist selects a semi-satin, natural
finish that remains breathable.
Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint
Lightweight and ideal for a “no-makeup” makeup
vibe.
