| editor’s letter |

When I was a 22-year-old

recent college graduate,

I pulled together all my

tip money from four

years of waitressing

and drained my savings account to

embark on a journey around the

world—just me, myself, and I. The

first stop? Europe! And while the art,

history, monuments, and memories

made with newfound friends were

formative, it was the food that stuck

with me most.

From savoring a freshly made,

Nutella-filled crêpe in a Parisian park

and sipping steins while devouring

bigger-than-my-face Bavarian pretzels

in Munich, to enjoying real (read: really

good!) fondue in a cozy Swiss chalet,

the eats and drinks were simple and

simply divine—prepared intentionally

with incredible ingredients.

Lucky for us, authentic European cuisine can be found at our fingertips—no

passport or plane ticket required. In this month’s feature, “Euro Eats” (page 68),

we’re taking you along for the ride, sharing the best local places to indulge in

the continent’s most iconic, mouthwatering bites. We’ll journey to the United

Kingdom for the crispiest, freshest fish & chips around (found

in Placerville of all places!), all the way to Portugal for a taste

“The world is of the country’s iconic egg custard tart (pastel de nata), and

your oyster. every country in between.

It’s up to you While you’ll spot some familiar favorites on the menu

to find the (lasagna, baklava, bangers & mash…), you might also discover

something new, like Moldovan placinté and Turkish künefe.

pearls.“

Let the article serve as a reminder to stay curious, especially

—Chris Gardner

when it comes to cultures and cuisines.

Looking back at photos from my life-changing post-grad

gap year, it’s clear just how long ago it was—and how time changes us. While I feel

like the same me in many ways, I’ve also matured (physically and mentally) quite

a bit. Motherhood, marriage, the sun, stress—they’ve all done a number on me, for

better (wiser) and for worse (wrinkles). So, when our team decided to do makeovers

this month, I jumped at the opportunity to participate.

A day of pampering with hair, skin, and makeup professionals? I’d be silly not

to sign up! Considering my daily get-ready routine takes roughly five minutes, this

was a major—and much-needed—glow-up. Read all about what was done and why,

and see the before-and-after photos in “The Spring Refresh,” beginning on page 34.

The pages ahead are filled with plenty more inspiring, informative, and

appetizing articles, including 10 must-dos in Greater Palm Springs (page 16), top

spots to feed your need for oysters (“Shuck Yeah,” page 78), and a spotlight on three

A+ students (“Class Acts,” page 20) who are already making big waves in the world.

Enjoy the issue—and wherever your next adventure takes you, I hope there’s

something delicious waiting at the end of it. Cheers!

When it comes

to brunch, are

you team sweet

or team savory?

“Team sweet: give me a

freshly baked pastry and

a hot cup of black coffee,

and I’m in heaven!”

—Taylor Allred

“Ooh, the classic conundrum!

I have to say team savory,

but if someone wants to

share a couple bites of

their French toast with me,

I’ll never say no.”

—Ryan Martinez

“I'm usually team savory!

Give me all the omelets,

chilaquiles, and eggs

benedicts—unless there

are chocolate chip

pancakes on the menu, of

course.”—Caitlin Emmett

“Team savory, for sure! I love

a good eggs benedict. I’ll

happily eat all the bacon

and hashbrowns, too.

Bonus points for avocado

slices.”—Shawna Nenni

“Savory! I’m trying to get

my doctor to prescribe

candied bacon for

anything that ails me.”

—Terry Carroll

"There's nothing better

than savoring a loaded

breakfast burrito and

washing it down with a

well-garnished Bloody

Mary—extra spicy, please!"

DRIVE TIME

In this month’s “Drive Time” column, auto aficionado and

experienced car writer Doug Newcomb takes the BMW iX for

a spin and shares his honest review. “While its bulbous exterior

is a design departure, this all-electric SUV embodies the German

brand’s performance pedigree, low-key luxury, and trailblazing

Emmett Rose

Emmett Rose has been

playing basketball

for as long as he can

remember—and his hard

work has paid off. The 6’2”

senior guard at Placer High

School is considered one

of the best players in the

Sacramento region. During

the 2025-26 season, he was

the best three-point shooter

in the CIF Sac-Joaquin

Section, and (as of press

time) ranked among the top

five in the state and top 20

nationwide for made threes.

In January, he surpassed 1,000

career points.

You’ve been getting a lot of

attention for your game.

That must feel great.

The accolades are cool, but I

couldn’t have gotten to where

I am without the help of my

parents, teammates, and

coaches.

What is your proudest

accomplishment?

Breaking my school record

for threes made in a season,

and hopefully by the time

it’s all said and done, career

threes.

What do you plan to do

after high school?

Play college basketball,

whether it’s at a local junior

college or out of state. I just

want to keep playing.

What advice would give

other teens in pursuing

their goals?

Hard work pays off. The

struggles you may be going

through right now are all a

part of the journey.

I understand your faith is

important to you.

God has helped me in more

ways than I could’ve ever

imagined. When things get

rough, He makes it better.

Romans 8:18 says, “For I

consider that the sufferings

of this present time are not

worth comparing with the

glory that is to be revealed to

us.” I love this verse because

whenever I go through rough

patches, I know that it’s all

part of God’s plan. If I keep

the faith and keep working,

things will work out.

she says, adding that she’d also like pitch her business on

Shark Tank.

Aside from spinning sugar, Gillrath also enjoys drawing

anime and anything related to technology

(@pikaisa2027), playing golf, skiing, traveling the world

with her family, and volunteering at FieldHaven Feline

Center. She also speaks Spanish and is currently learning

Japanese, because she hopes to one day visit Japan and get

an internship in animation.

What was your first big event?

The Whitney Ranch Harvest Festival in October 2024. I

pitched the idea of selling cotton candy, and [the event

hosts] welcomed it and generously allowed me to use

their industrial machine. Preparing was intense—there

was sugar flying everywhere in our kitchen—but with my

family’s help, I stayed focused and motivated, and it was

an incredible success.

How did you grow

your business?

I quickly realized

customers wanted both

fresh and pre-packaged

options. After testing

different packaging,

I created 24 oz. bags

for fairs and direct

sales, and a signature

5.5 oz. mini option. I

also create cakes made

entirely of cotton candy.

What do you plan to

do after high school?

I want to focus on

technical animation

and film and build a

well-paying career that

allows me to do what

I love with creative

freedom.

What advice would

you give to other

start a business?

Starting is easy;

sticking with it is hard.

and test in the market.

Follow the rules, be

persistent, and set one

goal per week.

activities. In her free time, she enjoys

figure skating, swimming, spending time

outdoors, and traveling. “Alaska is high on

my list for its untouched landscapes and

[seeing] the Northern Lights,” she says.

Why did you create EcoSync?

To help people better understand and reduce their energy use

in a way that is accessible and practical. The goal is to empower

individuals and households to make informed, environmentally

responsible choices while working together to strengthen

communities. The app is currently in the beta phase; I plan to

release it publicly by the end of the year.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Creating EcoSync and seeing it grow from

an idea into something with real impact.

What do you plan to do after high

Study neuroscience and computer science,

with the goal of using artificial intelligence

to bridge the two fields.

What advice would you give to other

Spotlight on

Kimber Chin

by JENNIFER MARAGONI

“I love doing anything that adds light

to the world,” she says. “I’ve created a

movement called Glow Path Life, which

includes retreats, reiki healing, sound

bowl sessions, nourishing recipes, and

art classes. At its heart, it’s about helping

people shed limiting beliefs, listen to their

inner wisdom, and gently close the gap

between the life they hope for and the life

they’re actually living.”

Chin shares her art on Instagram

(@kimberchinart), at Persimmon Art

Gallery in Auburn, and by participating

in local events.

How did you get your start as an artist?

I’ve loved creative expression for as long as

I can remember. Like many working moms,

though, I fit it in around the edges of life—

small pockets of time here and there.

I’m deeply grateful to [fellow artist]

Sondra Hersh, who taught me mixed

media and, more importantly, encouraged

me to step into the belief that creativity

isn’t reserved for a few—it’s something we

all carry inside us.

What drew you to fiber art?

I was a lifelong quilter, spinner, and

Felting is

an allegory

for life. You

can have

plans—

and still

stay open

to what’s

unfolding.

For Kimber Chin, creativity isn’t just a practice—it’s a way of

living with presence and possibility. After years of weaving

art into the margins of a busy life, she now embraces it

without restraint. By felting luxurious blends of wool, silk,

cashmere, and other fibers, she creates wearable pieces that

are both ethereal and enduring.

“Through felting, I blend colors and textures intuitively,

creating pieces that range from delicate, translucent layers

to richly textured surfaces,” she says.

A cancer survivor, Chin approaches each piece with

gratitude, surrender, and trust in the unfolding process.

Her scarves, wraps, and dyed silks are “for anyone longing

to wear beauty.” When she isn’t creating art, Chin supports

other women as a mindset coach (kimberchincoaching.com)

and art instructor.

knitter, so in many ways I was already

primed for fiber art. When I feel cold, I

want to wrap myself in something that’s

comfortable, beautiful, and warm. By

wet felting fine micron wool with silk,

cashmere, alpaca, and other fibers, I

create pieces that feel delicate yet are

surprisingly toasty and durable.

What types of pieces do you create?

For cooler weather, I create scarves and

wraps that look airy and delicate but

are soft, strong, and meant to be worn

and loved. For warmer months, I ice

dye silk scarves, T-shirts, and totes. This

fall, I’m excited to introduce oversized

hoodies that carry the same artistry into

everyday comfort.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Community is my greatest source of

inspiration. I love collaborating with other

artists—sometimes by incorporating their

wool or fabrics and responding intuitively

to what I see and feel. I’m also inspired by

the broader fiber arts, felting, and dyeing

communities online. There’s something

deeply energizing about witnessing what’s

possible through other people’s creativity.

Tell me about your process.

Felting is an allegory for life. You can

have plans—and still stay open to what’s

unfolding. I believe deeply in the art

of allowing. As I work, I slow down

and ask, ‘What can I notice right now?

What’s emerging if I let it?’ Creating this

way brings me joy because it invites

presence, gratitude, and trust—qualities I

try to practice both in art and in life.

How did your cancer journey

influence your art?

When I was diagnosed, I had a two-yearold

and a baby, and I wasn’t sure I’d get

to raise them. Now they’re adults. That

experience reshaped everything. I’m

profoundly grateful for the time I was

given back, and I choose to spend it

with more intention and joy. In both life

and art, I’ve let go of the need to control

outcomes or for things to look a certain

way in order to be meaningful. I allow the

work to emerge—and I celebrate it as it is.

What do you hope viewers

experience through your art?

My deepest hope is that people feel a

sense of possibility in their own lives—

that they question old stories like ‘I’m not

creative’ or ‘Life isn’t for me.’ When we

shrink the gap between what we

value and how we live, something

powerful happens. None of us

knows how much time we have,

so my hope is that my work gently

encourages people to savor and

fully inhabit their lives, right now.

What is the best compliment you

could receive about your art?

That it inspired someone to

believe they, too, can make

time for art—and that they

are an artist. In my felting

classes, people often leave with

something beautiful to wear

after just a day or a weekend. But

underneath that, what I’m really

teaching is how to reconnect

with joy in the process itself.

The Spring

Refresh

by KOURTNEY JASON | photos by TAYLOR ALLRED

4 Women, 4 Transformations

After months of winter layers, muted tones, and “I’ll deal with

it later” beauty routines, spring has entered the chat. And with

it, the urge to refresh. This season, four STYLE team members

stepped into full-on spring makeovers, partnering with one of

the region’s most sought-after hair salons and med spas,

plus top makeup artists and boutiques, for head-to-toe

transformations. We sat down with the experts to

break down exactly what they did (and why!) and

asked our newly styled staffers to reflect on the

experience. The results are inspiring, confidenceboosting,

and a reminder that a seasonal shift is

the perfect excuse for some extra self-care.

Theresa

56, Publisher/CEO

Hitting her mid-50s last year marked the moment Theresa knew it was

time for a change. She wasn’t attached to keeping things the same and

went into the experience open-minded, hopeful it would make her feel

like a “new person” and ready to step into this next chapter with a little extra spark.

During the makeover, the Botox treatment caused some nervousness, but with

reassurance from the doctor and her team, “it was easier than I thought,” Theresa says.

She’d assumed Botox would hurt; however, “it was an easy, painless process.”

After the reveal, Theresa felt renewed. “It was a day of pampering that I

needed.” The experience also nudged her beyond her usual style-comfort zone.

“The clothes I wore [were outside my fashion comfort zone] but something I’ll now

mix into my wardrobe,” she says. Her advice to others wanting to try something

new with their look? “Go for it! You’ll never know what you’re missing.”

minimal, Sara added soft shimmer

and eyeliner to ensure her hazel eyes

stood out. To create balance, she

chose a more pigmented rose lipstick.

The result landed “somewhere in

between” subtle transformation and

bold reinvention—a happy medium

that felt comfortable, polished, and

in sync with Theresa’s features.

Sara’s go-to trick to feel instantly

refreshed: “A little pop of peach

or pink blush, lots of mascara, and

a swipe of lip gloss goes a long

way in brightening up a face.”

Advice for anyone stuck in a

makeup rut: “Try out a new product

or color. Swapping out one or two

products can sometimes open your

eyes to what you never thought would

work on you. For example, if you

normally wear a nude lipstick, try

on a darker, sheer lip tint or gloss.”

One easy tweak for a spring update:

“Spring makeup trends this year are

soft, romantic, and ‘lived in.’ One of my

favorite ways to modernize a look is to

blot a darker lipstick onto your lips to

create a stained effect. Leave as is or

swipe some gloss or balm on top. It’s

a quick update that feels effortless.”

for a refresh that felt subtle, natural,

and had her looking a little less tired.

As the process unfolded, she felt

grounded in the belief that “aging is an

absolute privilege and not something I’m

ashamed of.” The experience reinforced that

confidence and joy are what truly define

beauty. “So cliche,

but beauty is in

the eye of the beholder and comes from feeling

good and happy on the inside—and taking care

of yourself physically and mentally,” she says.

Seeing the final reveal, Megan was blown

away. “Holy moly! It’s truly amazing how hair

and makeup—when done by professionals—and

a fun new outfit can transform a person’s

look and confidence!” She says she felt

like the “same me, but slightly more

says. She evened out Megan’s skin

Shireen’s go-to trick to feel

the inner under-eye area, you

that lifts the entire complexion.”

One easy tweak for a spring

update: “Swap out matte, flat

as using dewy creams, subtle

glow on the high points, and a

should look hydrated and alive.”

Before the makeover, Debbie felt “anxious and

belief that “change is good—don’t stay stuck because it’s comfortable.”

HAIR CARE

“I serviced a root touch up, added partial highlights, gave her

a hydrating treatment, an allover toner, and a haircut. [The

biggest impact was the] highlights, which added dimension to

her existing base color. I like to transition my clients to subtle

she felt an instant connection to her

contagious energy. Knowing Debbie “wasn’t

afraid of full glam,” she leaned into rich tones,

strategic shimmer, and a radiant complexion

with a subtle but sculpted lift. Because Debbie had

permanent makeup, the goal was to “soften and

brighten her overall look for a fresh, radiant spring

feel.” Rather than reinventing her, Shireen focused

on refinement and honoring her bold lip while keeping

everything cohesive, elevated, and unmistakably “Debbie.”

Shireen’s go-to trick to feel instantly

refreshed: “It’s all in the skin

prep! Two of my go-to staples are

MAC Hyper Real Serumizer and

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré.

Together, they create the ideal

canvas, leaving skin smoother,

plumper, and naturally radiant.

Advice for anyone stuck in a

makeup rut: “Book a one-on-one

lesson or personal shopping session

with a professional makeup artist.

The biggest mistake people make

is scrolling through social media

trends that may not suit their unique

features or lifestyle. Working

directly with a pro helps you

discover what truly works, reignites

mindset. She knew she needed a good

haircut, but hadn’t tied it to any big moment,

just that her birthday felt like the right time for a refresh. Easygoing

and open-minded, she says, “I’m very simple and not picky at all. I

told the professionals to do whatever they thought would look

best.” Her goal was clear: “Still myself, but refreshed.”

During the makeover, Emiley felt at ease. “Nothing

was outside my comfort level,” she says. The

process didn’t challenge her views on beauty

or style, but it did offer a fresh perspective,

and she also discovered a fun surprise:

“Purple goes well with green eyes!”

After the reveal, Emiley admits it was

“more makeup than I’m used to, but it

was glamorous.” The biggest shift was

the blonde. “This was a huge change,

because I’ve always had dark hair,” she

says. The experience also sparked real

change. “I plan to start getting monthly

facials now.” Her advice for someone

hesitant to try something new with their

look? “Go for it! Life is short—have fun!”

“We did a full balayage and haircut. The

hair look and feel a lot fuller! We also added

some new curtain bangs, which helps draw

attention to her beautiful eyes.” Isabel Krohn, The

Colour Chemistry Salon & Spa @isabels.hair

MAKEUP MAGIC

Knowing Emiley doesn’t

wear much makeup, Sara

Garcia (sgartistry.com)

kept it light, using minimal

product for maximum

impact. To make her eyes

pop, she blended bronze

and lavender tones to

enhance the gold and green

in them, while choosing

lip shades that complemented her skin tone. The approach was subtle

by design, to show that professional makeup doesn’t have to look or feel

heavy to be transformative.

Sara’s go-to trick to feel instantly refreshed: “Use a little bit of

highlighter in the inner eye area. This creates an illusion of brightening and

widening eyes. A lighter matte shade can also work if shimmer isn’t your thing.”

Advice for anyone stuck in a makeup rut: “Invest in a makeup lesson! It’s such a

great way to update your makeup look in the comfort of your home. Sometimes it’s as

simple as adjusting application technique or swapping out a different tone of shadow, lip

color, or cheek color. Having a professional teach you proper technique, tool usage,

and product placement can make a huge difference in boosting confidence!”

One easy tweak for a spring update: “Add a little rose gold or lavender shimmer

to the eye along with a dark plum, navy, or dark green eyeliner on the top

lash line. It’s a fun, subtle way to add color without looking dated.”

Three of the STYLERs

received Botox about two

weeks before the hair and

makeup day, and all four of

the women had facials the

day of the makeover. Here, the

experts share more about

these treatments.

Botox 101

Dr. Gurpreet Boparai, MD, owner and

medical director of Entourage MD Skin &

Wellness (entouragemd.com

@entourage_md @entouragemd),

approaches Botox with strategy and

restraint. Scheduling treatments two

weeks ahead of a special event,

occasion, or vacation allows time to

“discuss, plan, and get the treatment

done with time to follow up.” For

patients who want to look refreshed—

not different—she focuses on treating

the upper 1/3 of the face, where

Botox is FDA-approved, carefully

mapping injection placement and

selecting the appropriate amount.

Through detailed discussion of facial

expressions and expectations, she

ensures movement is preserved. A

successful result means wrinkles are

softened while the face still looks natural,

rested, and expressive. Her advice for first

timers is to review concerns thoroughly and

start slow; also, remember that results last

about three months and aren’t permanent.

Facials 101

Facials aren’t one-size-fits-all. They’re

strategic. Jennifer Vasquez, owner

of The Colour Chemistry Salon & Spa

(thecolourchemistry.com

@colourchemistrysalon

thecolourchemistry), and her team—

including Mina Kumari, who performed

the gentle, relaxing, soothing facials on all

four STYLE employees—customize each

treatment using Osmosis Skincare, selecting

active topical ingredients that “work in the

live tissue of the skin” to target each client’s

specific goals. “Nothing beats a professional

enzyme exfoliation removing old dead skin

cells,” instantly revealing skin that’s glowing,

dewy, and able to breathe. Great makeup

starts with a nice, clean canvas, built on a

consistent skincare routine and hydration.

They also stress that sunscreen should be the

final, non-negotiable step. The team’s

spring reset tip? “Invest in a resultsdriven

serum tailored to your

specific skin type and concern.”

MOVING

PAST

YOUR PAST

One of the most notable areas of

growth in the mental health field is the

increasing use of EMDR (Eye Movement

Desensitization and Reprocessing)

to treat trauma and anxiety-related

disorders. This evidence-based approach

helps clients reprocess distressing

memories in a way that reduces

their emotional intensity and lasting

impact. As awareness grows around

how unresolved trauma can influence

relationships, work, and even physical

health, the demand for trauma-informed

care continues to rise. What makes this

trend especially compelling is EMDR’s

ability to deliver measurable progress

without requiring clients to repeatedly

revisit or retell painful experiences. By

supporting nervous system regulation

and facilitating deeper healing, it goes

beyond symptom management to

address the root of distress.

Q: WHY SHOULD SOMEONE GET

AUTOMATED SHADES?

A: Automatic window coverings offer

a strong combination of convenience,

safety, and long-term durability,

making them ideal for modern homes.

With remotes or built-in programming

and timers, shades can open and close

at consistent times each day, giving

homeowners confidence that they’ll

function properly—even when away.

Automation also boosts home

security by creating a lived-in look

and helps manage light, privacy,

and temperature. For families with

children and pets, motorized, cordless

operation eliminates dangling cords,

making the home safer. Controlled via

remote, wall switch, or Bluetooth app,

they require less handling, reducing

wear and potential damage and

helping them last longer.

Automated systems are available with

wireless rechargeable batteries, solar

charging, or low-voltage wiring for

whole-house integration. With reliable

technology and proven performance,

automatic window coverings deliver

peace of mind, daily ease, and a smart

investment in safety and comfort.

Cocobuttery

@cocobuttery_ @cocobutterylotion

Services or products you offer: Organic skincare thoughtfully

formulated for eczema, dry skin, sensitive skin, chemocompromised

skin, and anyone who values truly clean, ingredientconscious

products.

What you enjoy most about your profession: The most

rewarding part of my work is helping people feel comfortable in

their skin again. When someone finds relief after struggling for

years, it reminds me why I started this journey.

Customer service is: Second only to delivering a quality product.

To me, it’s one of the clearest indicators of a company’s integrity

and one of the main reasons I choose to remain loyal to a business.

You started your business, because: When my daughter was

born with severe eczema, the only solution doctors offered was

steroid creams. One night, feeling overwhelmed, I went to bed

crying and praying for another option. The next morning, I woke

up with a simple formula in my mind: shea butter, cocoa butter,

and coconut oil. I blended the ingredients together and applied it

to her skin. Over time, her eczema disappeared. In 2017, I decided

to share that same solution with others facing similar struggles

and established Cocobuttery.

Most memorable experience as an entrepreneur: My

father endured 15 rounds of chemotherapy and five rounds

of radiation, which left his skin severely damaged. I began

applying my product, Genesis, to help soothe and restore

his skin. Gradually, his complexion improved in ways even

his oncologists found surprising. While hospital regulations

prevented us from offering the product to other patients, that

moment confirmed for me that what I created truly had the

power to help people in a meaningful way.

First job: A sales associate at a men’s clothing store in the mall—

where I learned early on the importance of customer service and

understanding what people truly need.

Favorite food: Seafood, in almost any form.

Favorite local restaurant: Rose Park Bistro.

When not working, you can be found: Spending time in

my backyard, soaking up the sunshine and appreciating the

peaceful view.

You love living here, because: The community is filled with

genuinely kind people, not just polite ones. The schools are

excellent, and the neighborhood feels like something straight out

of a childhood dream.

Services or products you offer: Inclusive early childhood programs

for young children with and without developmental differences,

with a special focus on those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Our developmental, play-based intervention model is inspired by the

Reggio Emilia approach and grounded in evidence-based practices—

particularly the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) and Group-ESDM—

prioritizing relationships, play, communication, and meaningful

social engagement.

What you enjoy most about your profession: Creating meaningful

opportunities for neurodivergent children and their families, while

building an inclusive community where every child can thrive and

parents experience a vibrant, supportive school for all.

Customer service is: Building authentic, respectful partnerships with

families and the community through responsive communication,

collaboration, and shared responsibility for each child’s participation

and growth.

Most memorable experience as an entrepreneur: Watching

families walk in who had previously been told their child wasn’t a

good fit elsewhere and sometimes repeatedly. I remember a parent

saying, with visible relief, ‘He really is welcomed back?’ In that

moment, the long hours, uncertainty, and risk of building something

new felt completely worthwhile. It reinforced that entrepreneurship

isn’t just about creating a service—it’s about creating belonging and

changing what’s possible for families.

You love living here, because: The natural beauty and ruralness

I am blown away at how awesome Carter’s Carpet

Restoration is. We have one area in living room where

pets had done so much damage that even after having other

companies clean it multiple times, the stains popped up

within a few days. We had a special name of that area

were the stains and odor removed, the rug has stayed clean

From College Side Job

to a Thriving Business

While studying Administration

and Marketing at Foothill

College, I painted on the side

to cover expenses. My passion

for construction led me to start

Bayshore, and in March 1995, I

became a licensed contractor.

Soon after, I relocated to

Placerville, CA, where my

parents had retired.

Starting a business wasn’t easy,

but my hands-on experience

and dedication helped me

establish a reputation for quality

work. What began as a small

operation quickly grew into a

well-respected company, thanks

to strong client relationships and

a commitment to craftsmanship.

Over the years, we’ve had the

opportunity to work on a

wide range of projects, from

historic buildings to modern

commercial spaces.

Commitment to

Craftsmanship

I learned from old-school

professionals who emphasized

craftsmanship and attention to

detail. That foundation shaped

Bayshore Painters—not just

painting, but a teamwork-driven

company built on quality

and integrity.

Beyond technique, I believe that

painting is about enhancing

and preserving spaces. Whether

restoring an old building or

adding a fresh coat to a new

home, every project deserves

the same level of care. That’s

why we use only high-quality

materials and take the time

to prepare surfaces properly,

Keys to a Great

Paint Job

A quality paint job starts with

proper prep, including priming,

caulking, and premium finish

paint. I also enjoy helping clients

choose the perfect colors and

placement, ensuring the final

look matches their vision.

Many people underestimate

the importance of surface

preparation. A great paint

job isn’t just about color—it’s

about durability. That’s why

we take extra care in prepping

surfaces, applying multiple

coats when needed, and using

the best products for each

unique project.

Staying Ahead

in the Industry

The biggest mistake in painting?

Not applying enough primer or

finish. A proper coating must be

thick enough, and every surface

requires a tailored approach.

Client communication is also

key—we walk clients through

the process to build trust and

long-term relationships.

As the industry evolves, so do

the materials and techniques we

use. Staying up to date with new

products, eco-friendly paints,

and advanced application

methods ensures that we deliver

the best possible results for

our clients.

Choosing the Right

Painting Company

When hiring a painter, look

beyond the bid:

• Check BBB accreditation

• Call referrals

• Verify CSLB license

& insurance

• Ask about prep & materials

At Bayshore Painters, we uphold

the highest industry standards

and encourage homeowners to

do their research.

Giving Back

to the Community

We’re proud to handle painting

for EDCOE and multiple

local school districts. Our

commitment to the community

includes:

Donating to

Local School Sports

We often provide free labor

for charity raffles.

Going The Extra Mile

for Clients

We believe in building lasting

relationships, not just with clients

but with the community we

serve. Whether it’s a small touchup

job or a large commercial

project, our goal is to make a

lasting impact through quality

work and service.

At Bayshore Painters, painting

is more than a job—it’s about

craftsmanship, teamwork, and

giving back. We look forward

to continuing to serve our

community with excellence.

Home Tour

A MOODY, MODERN REVIVAL

by KOURTNEY JASON | photos by NICOLE DIANE PHOTOGRAPHY

What was once a modest 1,100-squarefoot

home built in 1955 is now a

personality-packed retreat—expanded,

reimagined, and layered with intention.

Led by Alison Haltom, owner of Design for Living

(designforlivingbyah.com), the project was a fullscale

renovation and expansion that transformed the

footprint and feel of the home while preserving its

connection to the Sierra foothills setting.

“This was a full gut renovation and expansion,”

Haltom says. “The primary goals were to significantly

increase the home’s square footage to improve

functionality and flow, introduce more natural light, and

create a space that felt personal and one of a kind.”

From the start, the scope was ambitious. Walls

came down. Ceilings were reconsidered. Rooms were

reconfigured. And square footage nearly doubled.

Expanding the Footprint & Possibilities

Working alongside an architect, the team expanded

the original 1,100-square-foot layout to approximately

2,300 square feet. In addition to adding space, they

wanted the home to work smarter.

One of the most dramatic shifts happened in the

heart of the house: the kitchen.

Originally small and closed off from the dining room,

“by combining the two spaces, we created a large, eat-in

kitchen with an island that allows natural light to flow

freely throughout the main living areas,” Haltom shares.

The result is a central gathering space that is

open, bright, and connected—no longer segmented

into tight, outdated rooms. A new island anchors the

space, while improved sightlines allow daylight to

move through the home.

Upstairs, the transformation continued. “Two bedrooms and two

bathrooms were combined to form a spacious primary suite with a

generous bathroom and walk-in closet. In the previously unfinished

lower level, two additional bedrooms and a bathroom were added,

increasing both livability and usable space,” she says.

From sketches to styling, the renovation required time and patience.

“From initial planning through completion, the project spanned just

62 stylemg.com | APRIL 2026 | /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemags

DR

TOTAL

EYEWEAR

(

| home & garden |

over two years. This extended timeline

allowed for architectural reconfiguration,

thoughtful design development, and

the careful execution of custom details

throughout the home, including

furnishings and final styling,” she says.

Navigating Structural Challenges

As could be predicted with a home

built in the mid-1950s, surprises were

inevitable. “One of the main challenges

involved raising the kitchen ceilings

to enhance natural light,” Haltom says.

“Structurally, we were only able to

raise the ceiling through two-thirds of

the space. To make the transition feel

intentional, we aligned the floating

shelves to the left of the cooktop with

the new ceiling line and introduced an

asymmetrical pendant over the island to

draw the eye away from the change.”

Style Meets Function

For Haltom, the project underscores a core

philosophy: layout comes first. A beautiful

space that doesn’t function is a failure.

“Every project begins with space planning

before any materials are selected,” she says.

“Establishing the footprint and overall flow

is critical. Layout can’t be compromised.

Once the plan is resolved, we layer in

materials, finishes, and furnishings

that support both the function and the

aesthetic of the space.”

Material selection was equally

intentional. “For every material selection,

we have open conversations with clients

about durability and long-term use.

Some materials, like leather or marble,

are meant to age and show wear. As long

as that patina is embraced as part of the

story, those materials become even more

meaningful over time.”

A Moody, Memorable Moment

While the entire home carries a strong

point of view, one room in particular

commands attention. “The powder room

stands out as one of the most dramatic

spaces,” she says. “After exploring several

concepts, we landed on a striking

Michelangelo quartzite slab, which was

fabricated into a custom vanity with an

integrated sink. The walls and ceiling

were painted a deep, almost-black green,

and the space was grounded with Nero

Marquina marble floors. It’s bold, moody,

and unapologetic.”

These choices turned a typically

overlooked room into a design statement.

It also reflects the homeowner’s

personality, which was central to every

decision Haltom made with her client.

Designing for Individuality

The homeowner wanted character in

her space. “We worked closely with

the client to weave her personality,

personal style, and mementos into the

design wherever possible,” Haltom says.

“She wanted the home to feel funky

and unique, and we leaned into that,

making sure the finished space felt like a

true reflection of who she is rather than

a formulaic design.” That collaboration

resulted in a space that feels layered

rather than staged, an environment

shaped by both professional design

expertise and personal narrative.

Haltom sums up the guiding principle

behind the project clearly. “When you

embrace the uncommon and the

personal, you create something that can’t

be replicated,” she says. “This home is a

layered blend of the existing architecture,

its setting in the Sierra foothills, the client’s

personal aesthetic, and our perspective as

a design team. We approach every project

through this lens, considering all four

elements and integrating them together,

so the final result feels intentional,

authentic, and truly specific to both the

client and the home.”

A Reminder That Risk Pays Off

At its core, this renovation is proof that

boldness creates lasting impact. “This

project was a reminder that thoughtful

risk-taking pays off,” she says. “When

design decisions are intentional and

rooted in both function and individuality,

the result feels cohesive and authentic.”

A PASSPORT-FREE

FOOD TOUR

by SHARON PENNY

If an actual European

trip isn’t in the

cards, consider this

your invitation to explore

closer to home. We’ve

mapped out a tasty tour of

European eats through

the wonderful restaurants

in our region. From Cornish

pasties and German

rouladen to Bosnian

ćevapi, Ukrainian

syrniki, Greek

moussaka, French

escargot, and Portuguese

pastel de nata, you might

be surprised how many

authentic European

flavors can be found

without leaving town. All

aboard for a delicious

adventure!

Eats

First Leg: United Kingdom

Our European tour starts in the United

Kingdom with their unofficial national

dish: Fish & Chips—a meal that

originated in England but is equally

beloved in Ireland, Scotland, and

Wales. Try it in Placerville at The

Brick Oven Pub (thebrickovenpub.

com) where wild-caught Icelandic

cod is hand-battered to order using

Sierra Nevada beer then deep-fried

until golden brown and served with

hand-cut fries, coleslaw, tartar sauce,

and lemon wedges. It may not be wrapped in

newspaper like the local “chippy,” but it tastes just

as good on a plate—pass the malt vinegar!

The Fat Rabbit photo by Robert Laughter. Kathrin’s Biergarten photo by Matthew Kniss. The Forester photo by Jyo Bhamidipati. 19 Handles Pub & Grill photo by Brianna

Patterson. Other photos coutesy of their respective restaurants.

Next stop: Folsom’s Churchill Arms

(churchillarmspub.com) for traditional

Bangers & Mash

(slang for

sausages and

mashed

potatoes):

a piping

hot plate of

grilled pork

sausages and

creamy mashed

potatoes topped with

traditional English brown gravy,

caramelized onions, and a side of peas.

Keep the carbs coming! Head to

The Fat Rabbit Public House

(@thefatrabbitfolsom) in the Historic

Folsom District for some Shepherd’s

Pie: savory

ground beef

and vegetables

topped with

mashed

potatoes and

baked until

golden. You’ve

got to hand

it to the UK:

they sure do

know their way

around a potato!

In Grass Valley, Marshall’s Pasties

(530-272-2844) serves delicious Cornish

Pasties (“pass”

“tees”)—meat

and vegetables

wrapped

in crumbly

shortcrust

pastry,

originating

from the

miners of

Cornwall. PRO TIP: Marshall’s also sells

excellent sausage rolls, another classic

UK staple.

Last stop: Roseville’s The Boxing

Donkey (theboxingdonkey.com) for

Corned Beef & Cabbage. Though it’s

not “from” Ireland—it was adopted by

Irish American immigrants once they

arrived in the U.S. and consumed by

the truckload every year on St. Patrick’s

Day—if you belly up to the “Donkey,” you

can enjoy it any day you like.

Second Leg: Germany,

Hungary, Bosnia-Herzegovina,

& Eastern Europe

Let’s continue with the comfort food

theme and journey into the forests,

mountains, and rivers of Germany where

hearty meats and (spoiler alert) many

beautiful carbs abound. Guten appetit! Let’s

begin in Rocklin at Kathrin’s Biergarten

(kathrinsbiergarten.com), where their

menu is a love letter to traditional German

food (and beer). The Jägerschnitzel, one

of Germany’s most popular dishes, is a

must: breaded pork or chicken schnitzel,

lightly fried, and finished with a creamy

mushroom jäger sauce and homemade

spätzle (soft, chewy, irregularly shaped

egg noodles) or fries, seasonal veggies,

and a green salad. Pair it with a frosty

stein of German beer and put on the

mandatory lederhosen! We’re joking

about the mandatory lederhosen,

but don’t rule it out.

Next up is The Forester

(foresterpubandgrill.com) in Camino,

a cozy, cabin-style restaurant

that instantly transports you to

Deutschland. Grab a plate of Rouladen,

a Sunday dinner staple in Germany,

featuring tenderized strips of rolled

beef stuffed with bratwurst,

carrots, onions, pickles,

and potatoes,

wrapped in

bacon, and

smothered

in gravy.

Mein

Gott!

Beef and

sausage?

These

Germans

really

know how to

party. Bring on

another glass of

that German beer!

As we say auf

wiedersehen

to Germany,

we follow the

Danube River into

Hungary by way

of Sacramento’s

19 Handles

Pub & Grill

(@19handles).

Here, you’ll find

a menu with a

European twist

(as well as plenty

of pub favorites).

Warm your belly

with a bowl of

Goulash, the

national dish of Hungary: tender

chunks of stewed pork marinated in

Hungarian spices and accompanied by

homemade spätzle.

Now it’s

onto Bosnia-

Herzegovina

via CrepeTown

Café & Grill

(crepetowncafe.

com) in Shingle

Springs, where

you’ll find

the country’s

renowned

warm

hospitality on display alongside sweet

and savory crêpes aplenty and much

more. Their Ćevapi, considered the

national dish of Bosnia-Herzegovina,

features flavorful grilled skinless

ground beef sausages and onions

tucked into a tasty traditional Balkan

flatbread known as lepinja.

We now journey into the landlocked

Eastern European country of Moldova,

courtesy of Carmichael’s Noroc

Restaurant (norocrestaurant.com).

Highlighting the cuisines of their

Moldovan homeland and beyond,

you’ll find many delights here,

including Plăcinte: a delicious,

layered pie of golden flaky pastry that

can be sweet or savory. At Noroc, there

are five varieties on the menu: choose

from savory fillings like traditional

farmer’s cheese, mashed potatoes, or

cabbage; or sweet fillings like sour

cherry or apple. Follow-up question:

why choose? Try them all!

From Moldova, we make our way to

Ukraine and Chant’el Café

(@chantel_cafe) in Folsom. Try Syrniki,

a traditional Ukrainian pancake filled

with farmer’s cheese and topped with

either strawberry jam and sour cream;

condensed milk and fresh fruit; or

chocolate, caramel, and

nuts. Just make sure to leave

room for all of the café’s desserts!

Third Leg: Greece & Turkey

Onward to Greece, home of ancient

ruins, cobalt blue waters, and delicious

grilled meats. Let’s start with the

classic Gyro Pita at Folsom’s Petra

Greek (petragreek.com). “Gyro” derives

from the Greek word “to turn” and

refers to the vertical rotisserie of slowroasted

meat; it’s also one of Greece’s

most famous street foods. At Petra,

pick from seasoned beef and lamb,

pork, or chicken—served on a warm

pita with fries, tomatoes, onions,

parsley, and your choice of tzatziki

sauce or Greek yogurt.

Let’s drop by the Kabob House of

Folsom (kabobhouse-folsom.com) for a

hearty helping of comforting

Moussaka.

Petra Greek

Made with eggplant, seasoned ground

sirloin, and bechamel sauce (they

also offer a vegetarian version!) it’s

no wonder this casserole is one of the

country’s most popular dishes. Don’t

pass up Kabob House’s grilled meats

and many delicious kabob skewers,

gyros, and souvlakis as well.

Next, we stop at one of Roseville’s

newest tables: Mati Modern Greek

Cuisine (matiroseville.com), where

a clean,

contemporary

setting pairs

beautifully

with fresh,

vibrant Greek

fare. Start

with the crispy

spanakopita

and comforting

avgolemono

soup, before

moving on

to the Dolmathes—hand-rolled grape

leaves stuffed with fragrant rice

and herbs and finished

with olive oil and

fresh lemon.

The sorcery continues at Vacanza

Romana (vacanzaromanarestaurant.

com) in El Dorado Hills with their Cacio

e Pepe. A true Roman

classic, this beguilingly

simple, velvety dish

features bucatini

(a thick, classic

spaghetti-style

pasta) tossed with

Pecorino Romano

DOP (DOP basically

means it’s certified

Italian from a very specific region of

Italy), black pepper, and parmigiano

Reggiano. That’s it! No frills—just

quality ingredients and lots of love.

Bellissima!

Pera Mezze photo by Caria Visuals. La Fornaretta photo by Lexi Ainsworth.

Other photos courtesy of their respective restaurants.

Finally,

we head

to Turkey, a country with

an incredibly rich and vibrant history,

mixing Eastern and Western traditions,

and known for their tender grilled doner

kebabs, delicious vegetables, and superb

desserts and coffee. First up is Roseville’s

Pera Mezze (@peramezzeroseville),

where an order of Turkish-style

steamed dumplings known as Manti—

stuffed with spiced ground beef and

onions and served with Greek yogurt

and melted paprika butter reduction—

are a must. Swoon.

Next, another

Turkish (and

Greek!) delight:

Baklava! Order

it at Yianni’s

Bar & Grill

(yiannisbarandgrill.

com) in Carmichael

for a huge portion

of flaky phyllo

pastry layers and

chopped walnuts

drenched in honey

syrup. Freshly made, there’s nothing

quite like it, and they also serve baklava

ice cream. If your visit lands on a Friday

or Saturday night, you might even

encounter a belly dancer!

Finally, drop by Anatolian Table

(anatoliantable.com) in Rocklin for an

authentically Turkish dining experience

and learn the wonders of Künefe—a

famous Turkish dessert boasting a

magical combination of gooey, crispy,

sweet, and savory: shredded phyllo

pastry stuffed with mozzarella, baked

until crisp and melty, and topped

with house syrup and

pistachios. Pair that

deliciousness

with a

traditional

Turkish coffee,

and you’ll

have achieved

cuisine

perfection.

Fourth Leg: Italy

Buongiorno! Our journey continues

to Rome, Italy, for thousand-year-old

ruins, mopeds, gorgeous Italians, and

not a single Olive Garden. Hooray! Let’s

start at Placerville’s Amore Mio Italian

Bistro (amoremioitalianbistro.com) with

one of Rome’s signature pasta dishes:

Maccheroni a Carbonara. Made the

real (read: best) way using rendered

guanciale (cured pork cheek/jowl),

pancetta, eggs, pecorino, parmigiano

Reggiano, and freshly cracked black

pepper, it’s creamy—with no

actual cream—and

pure Italian

magic.

Onward to Tuscany—birthplace

of the Renaissance and a region

celebrated for its world-class

wines and unfussy cuisine built

on exceptional ingredients. Dig

into the Lasagna Tradizionale

Toscana at Vaiano Trattoria

(vaianotrattoria.com), where layers

of fresh pasta are smothered in

slow-simmered sugo (meat sauce)

and creamy béchamel, then finished

with parmesan—no ricotta in sight!

The beloved Granite Bay spot is also

celebrating its 15th anniversary this

year, making it the perfect time to raise

a glass and savor a true taste of Toscana.

Next, to the toe

of Italy’s boot

we journey to

Sicily. Make

your way to La

Fornaretta

(lafornaretta.

com) in

Newcastle

for a classic

as Sicilian

as Sophia from The Golden Girls:

Penne Alla Norma. This humble

dish combines penne pasta with

garlic, basil tomato sauce, and

tender eggplant, plus ricotta

salata (a firm, crumbly ricotta

originating from Sicily).

wine, butter, cream, blistered cherry

tomatoes, charred lemons, shallots,

garlic, and fresh herbs, served with

toasted crostini and golden, crispy,

flavorful duck fat fries. Paired with

a pint of Belgian ale on tap, it’s

basically heaven.

Finally,

we journey to coastal

Sorrento by way of Visconti’s

Ristorante (viscontisristorante.com) in

Folsom, whose specialty is Southern

Italian cuisine. The Linguine alla

Sorrentina includes the namesake

noodles tossed with fresh tomatoes,

basil, melty mozzarella, and onions.

Nothing complicated—just beautiful

flavors, superior ingredients, and the

kind of cooking that tastes like it came

straight from Nonna’s kitchen.

Fifth Leg: Switzerland,

Belgium, & France

Welcome to Switzerland: where it’s not

just watches and chocolate but also

cheese! We’re trekking to Placerville’s

Enchanted Forest Dining Experience

(enchantedforestdining.com) for the Swiss

classic Fondue. Dipping hunks of bread,

meats, and veggies into melted cheese

has been a part of Swiss culture since at

least the 17th century—proof

that melted cheese is always

in fashion, no matter the

century. When I dip, you dip,

we dip!

We now travel to Belgium,

home of chocolate, canals, and

castles. Their national dish,

Moules Frites—mussels and

fries—can be found at Roseville’s

The Monk’s Cellar (monkscellar.

com). Enjoy the perfect simplicity

of Prince Edward Island Black

Mussels prepared in a broth of white

From Belgium to France: cue

the accordions! Escargot a la

Bourguignonne is a national dish

originating from the Burgundy region,

and at Allez! (allezeldorado.com)—home

of classic French cuisine in Diamond

Springs—the escargot is prepared

in-shell, stuffed with garlic herb

butter, and baked until sizzling. For

the fainthearted: think of it as a garlic

butter delivery system; the escargot

tastes a bit like a rich, woody

mushroom.

Another

French

classic, Salad

Niçoise,is a must at Danielle’s Creperie

(daniellescrepes.com) in Sacramento.

Originating

from Nice

in the 19th

century,

Danielle’s

version

includes

dilled

potatoes,

sliced

hard-boiled

eggs, red

onions,

olives,

Julian’s (julianscafe.com), with

locations in Folsom and Roseville,

is home to the Parisian classic Croque

Monsieur: grilled ham and cheese with

bechamel sauce and Dijon mustard

on sourdough, smothered in more

cheese. Tres bien!

Is there anything better than

a beautifully cooked steak

with fries? Order Steak Frites

at Auburn’s Restaurant

Josephine (josephineauburn.

com) and look forward to a

10-ounce certified Angus New

York strip steak, watercress,

and Josephine sauce au poivre,

alongside golden, crisp-fried

pommes frites. So simple… so good.

Lastly, you

can’t go

to France

without having

a classic,

perfectly made

Parisian crêpe,

and Catherine’s

Creperie

(catherinescreperie.

com) in Folsom is the

spot to order them.

Made using butter, eggs,

milk, and flour—nothing

more, nothing less—their Nutella-

Banana Crêpe is the ne plus ultra.

Final Leg: Spain & Portugal

No European tour would be complete

without a visit to Spain with its vibrant

mix of modern and traditional—from

bullfights and beaches to modern art,

historic cathedrals, and incredible

food. Before “shared plates” and “small

plates” were

a thing, the

Spanish had

tapas. Head

to Bodega

Biondi

(bodegabiondi.

com) in Fair Oaks and try their Patatas

Bravas, one of the most classic Spanish

tapas. Roasted potatoes tossed in a

smoky red “brava sauce” with garlic

aioli on the side makes for an all-timer

potato dish.

Another dish

synonymous with

Spain is paella: a

vibrant mix of rice;

juicy meats, seafood,

or veggies; and

spices like

saffron,

paprika, and

turmeric. At

Roseville’s Telefèric Barcelona

(telefericbarcelona.com) you can try

multiple paella varieties, including

their Ibérico Paella featuring

smoked pork chop, pork belly, and

Iberian ham slices. Try it with

socarrat (“Barcelona’s way”), a crispy,

caramelized rice layer on the bottom

to make it authentically Spanish.

From Spain we travel to Portugal, a

country steeped in maritime history

and famous for its namesake Port.

As a sweet end to your trip, head to

Paris Baguette (parisbaguette.com)

in Roseville for an iconic Portuguese

tart: Pastel de Nata. Originating

from a monastery in Lisbon in the

19th century, this beautiful baked

egg custard is caramelized to get the

iconic blistered top and served in a

deliciously flaky puff pastry shell.

Oz Korean BBQ

by RYAN MARTINEZ | photos by TAYLOR ALLRED

Irecently went to a friend’s house for a barbecue when he said

something that really resonated: “It’s honestly very simple.

Three of the most satisfying things are food, fire, and community.

Barbecue is all three of those things.”

Naturally, when I visited Oz Korean BBQ, those words came

to mind. One of the newest additions to the Palladio’s dining scene

delivers exactly that combination—a huge variety of meats and

seafood, a grill at the center of the table, and your favorite people

gathered around for a delicious meal. Judging by the crowds the

restaurant has been drawing, plenty of others agree.

My wife and I first tried going on Valentine’s Day. As we

approached, we saw a line out the door

with a wait time of over two hours. We

dined elsewhere, but upon our return a

few weeks later were seated immediately—

just before the crowds started rolling in.

Dinner here revolves around an allyou-can-eat

menu featuring a selection of

appetizers, proteins (beef, pork, chicken,

seafood), vegetables, and dessert. We kicked

things off with soju (a clear Korean distilled

spirit) along with sweet chili potstickers,

toasted onion green beans, and cheese corn.

Shortly after placing our order, a small

robot approached the table with impressive

precision, turned neatly, and revealed a tray

carrying all our appetizers.

Then, the grilling began.

For those unfamiliar, Korean barbecue

is a grill-it-yourself format where you

order raw ingredients and cook them

tableside. The meats come mostly

marinated, except for the ribeye in our

case, and are tossed onto the grill alongside

veggies and whatever else you choose. The

result is a lively, communal experience

that quite literally brings food, fire, and

community to the table.

Throughout our meal we sampled the

ribeye, spicy chadol, Oz galbi, bulgogi,

spicy bulgogi, garlic shrimp, spicy mussels,

calamari steak, parmesan mussels, and

jukumi (an entire small octopus that may

be a little adventurous for some palates),

along with a mix of vegetables and sesame

balls for dessert. Everything was delicious,

and even our toddler was fascinated by

the experience, making this both a kidfriendly

and adult-approved dining option.

Overall, Oz Korean BBQ is one

of the best values in the

area. The food is great,

the experience is a

ton of fun, and the

space is pristine but

unpretentious. I will

absolutely be gathering

here again with friends

and family.

THE

Hot

LIST

by CAITLIN EMMETT

Where to Eat Oysters

They’re the ultimate appetizer; great with

champagne; high in zinc, iron, and vitamin B12;

and delicious in every form, from freshly shucked

to baked with all the fixings. They’re oysters! While

these shellfish delicacies are consumed year-round,

April is often considered the end of peak season.

Read on to find your favorite or challenge yourself

to try them all. With this roundup of nine top spots,

the world of local dining is your oyster.

Scott’s Seafood Roundhouse

If you prefer your oysters baked with other ingredients, an order of Oysters Rockefeller is

just the ticket. This is a richer rendition, where oysters on the half shell are combined with

creamed spinach, Pernod, and hollandaise, then baked off with ample amounts of melty

cheese. You’ll sometimes find breadcrumbs on top, too, but not here, which allows the epic

cheesy top layer to shine. 824 Sutter Street, Folsom, 916-989-6711, scottsseafoodroundhouse.com

Reds’ Bistro

Traditionalists will appreciate an order of fresh West Coast Oysters, served with the

typical, time-honored accompaniments: hot sauce, cocktail sauce, mignonette, and lemon.

The mainstay types you’re likely to find here are Kumamoto (bright, mild, sweet) and

Shigoku (briny, crisp, clean). While you’re there, peruse the rest of Reds’ menu, too, where

no seed oils are used (hooray!). 3645 Taylor Road, Loomis, 916-259-4362, redsinloomis.com

C. Knight’s Steakhouse

If you’ve ever been held back by the

texture of oysters, look no further than an

order of Broiled Oysters. These offer a

nice alternative to fresh, typically having

a smoky flavor and a tender texture. Opt

for a half dozen or a full dozen. You have

Oysters on the Half Shell are the perfect

pre-steak bite. Sutter Street Steakhouse

aims to serve two varieties per week, with

the California coast native Kumamoto and

East & West Coast Oysters have been

a mainstay on the menu here since

varieties at any given time. Familiar

West Coast selections are available,

along with East Coast delicacies like East

Capes, Aunt Dotty, and Island Creeks

(FedExed overnight for freshness, of

course). These are sold per oyster, so you

can mix and match, getting as few or as

many as you please. No matter which

varieties you choose, expect a wedge

of lemon, seasonal mignonette, shaved

fresh horseradish, and house-made

fermented habanero and sea buckthorn

hot sauce. 1226 Lincoln Way, Auburn, 530-820-3523,

LET’S DO

Brunch!

by SHARON PENNY

Brunch is a love letter to late sleepers. Once

upon a time, breakfast favored the early riser

and came with a strict, single-digit cutoff

time—leaving anyone who hit snooze out of

luck until lunch. Not anymore. Today, brunch

stretches those golden morning hours well

into the afternoon, welcoming everyone to the

table. From indulgent crème brûlée French

toast to savory short rib enchiladas with eggs,

the options are as creative as they are craveworthy.

Ready to dig in? Come check out all the

good eats at our region’s best brunch spots.

FRIENDS WITH BENEDICTS

Brunch is served from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays and 7

a.m.-3 p.m. weekends, with 16 types of benedicts and

mimosas aplenty (over 40!), plus pancakes of every sort,

potato skillets, a dizzying array of avocado toasts, omelets,

French toasts, crêpes, Belgian waffles, classics like steak

and eggs, Mexican breakfast faves, and craft cocktails.

MUST-TRY DISH: Strawberry Shortcake Pancakes:

buttermilk pancakes topped with fresh strawberries and

whipped cream.

MUST-TRY DRINK: Piña Colada: white rum, pineapple juice, and

coconut cream; blended with ice and topped with whipped

cream and fresh pineapple.

Congrats to this month’s

nonprofit of the month:

MOTHER LODE

REHABILITATION

ENTERPRISES

Mother Lode Rehabilitation

Enterprises (MORE) is committed to

empowering adults with intellectual

and developmental disabilities to

enhance their quality of life. Through

person-centered programs—including

community access, job skill development,

creative arts, and social engagement—

the nonprofit supports individuals in

building independence, confidence, and

meaningful community connections.

Thanks to a core belief in full inclusion

for all people, MORE ensures every

participant has an opportunity to learn,

work, create, and thrive as a valued

member of the community.

VOLUNTEER

SPOTLIGHT:

Sandy Ewert

What inspired you to volunteer for

MORE?

Through a close friend who serves

on MORE’s Board of Directors, I had the

opportunity to attend several events

and learn about the organization’s

mission. The personalized, meaningful

services MORE provides really stood out

to me, and I knew I wanted to support

that work as a volunteer.

What do your volunteer duties entail?

I assist staff wherever support is needed,

helping ensure programs run smoothly.

I especially enjoy participating in the

meditation and music movement

class and assembling greeting cards

created from the clients’ artwork. It’s

a meaningful way to support their

creativity and self-expression.

Is there training required?

Yes. The training helps voluteers

approach their role with compassion,

respect, and an understanding of how to

best support the individual needs of the

people MORE serves.

What’s the time commitment?

I dedicate one day each week to

volunteering at MORE and am happy to

step in for additional support whenever

it’s needed and I’m able.

What’s been the best day of

volunteering so far?

Last year’s Valentine’s Day party was

my favorite! Since it was held on a

Wednesday (my designated volunteer

day), I was able to fully participate—

dancing with clients, watching their

hilarious version of The Dating Game, and

passing out goodies. It was such a joyful,

memorable experience!

What’s one of the biggest challenges?

Balancing my seasonal job during tax

season with volunteering at MORE. My

schedule gets busier, and I truly miss

the clients when I’m not able to be

there regularly.
