More efficient farming, better solutions: Discover

Nofence’s virtual fencing technology

As farmers face rising costs, labour shortages,

and environmental challenges, innovative

solutions are essential. Nofence, the world’s first

commercially available virtual fencing system, offers

a cost-effective, sustainable, and animal-friendly

approach to livestock management. Scalable

for both small crofts and commercial farms, it

eliminates the need for physical fences, making

grazing management more efficient.

Nofence collars use GPS and cellular networks to

communicate with the system’s app, enabling realtime

tracking and remote boundary adjustments.

Farmers can create, modify, or remove virtual fences

Adblue and Adblue Issues

If a tractor or other farm

equipment has is equipped with

a Selective Catalytic Reduction

(SCR) system (as most modern

diesel engines are) then you will be

using Adblue. SCRs use Adblue to reduce harmful

nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, helping to meet

stricter Euro 6, and beyond, emission standards

and improve air quality.

AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid, a solution of urea

and de-ionized water that is injected into the

exhaust system, upstream of the SCR, of diesel

vehicles. Here the chemical reaction converts NOx

into nitrogen and water reducing pollution and

meeting stricter emission standards. AdBlue is

essential to the SCR System.

Adblue issues

There are a few issues that effect Adblue systems.

The most common, and potentially expensive, is the

directly from their phones.

The Nofence app is central to this innovation.

Software Developer Malin Kildal highlights its userfriendly

design, “We made it as accessible as possible

for farmers, helping them to manage livestock

efficiently, with tools like heat mapping and grazing

data, all from the palm of their hand.”

The system relies on acoustic warnings and a mild

electric pulse – half the intensity of a traditional

electric fence – to guide animals away from the

defined boundaries. Research shows livestock

quickly adapt to audio cues, reducing the need for

pulses – with the acoustic warning versus electric

pulse ratio being 96%.

Animal welfare is a core priority. Nofence eliminates

risks associated with traditional fences, such as

entanglement and injury, while allowing livestock to

roam freely and naturally with minimal stress.

Farmers receive alerts if an animal hasn’t moved

in four hours, indicating possible illness or

entrapment. If an animal crosses the virtual

boundary, they are notified and can track it,

ensuring its safe return without additional warnings

or pulses.

By allowing real-time monitoring and remote

management, Nofence reduces labour and feed

costs. Farmers can adjust grazing areas from

anywhere – even while on vacation. Malin notes,

Adblue system getting blocked by Crystallisation.

Crystallisation in the AdBlue system happens

when the exhaust gases are not hot enough to react

properly with AdBlue. The AdBlue

does not completely turn into

ammonia. When this happens,

cyanuric crystals can form which

can contaminate the system

and block the AdBlue injector,

eventually affecting the running of

the vehicle.

Can the agricultural environment

lead to crystallisation?

Yes, agricultural conditions can

contribute to the crystallisation of

AdBlue, which can cause issues for

farmers. There are some factors

related to agricultural environments that can

increase the likelihood of AdBlue crystallizing or

becoming ineffective:

Temperature variations

Cold Weather: AdBlue begins to freeze at

temperatures below around -11°C (12°F). In many

agricultural settings, especially during colder

months, the temperature can drop significantly. If

AdBlue is stored or used in cold conditions without

proper precautions, it can crystallise and block the

system.

Fluctuating Temperatures, going from very cold to

warm. This can cause the AdBlue to freeze and thaw

“You see that their (the farmers’) mind is at ease just

by knowing where their animals are, they can go on

vacation if it’s just a week a year. They can do that

now with Nofence.”

The flexibility of virtual fencing allows farmers

to rotate grazing areas, opening up previously

inaccessible land, improving soil health, preventing

overgrazing and reducing erosion. With Nofence,

farmers gain efficiency, adaptability, and peace

of mind – supporting environmentally friendly

practices and transforming livestock management

for a more sustainable future.

repeatedly, potentially leading to the crystallisation

of urea.

Frequent refills

Frequent exposure to air when farmers frequently

open the AdBlue tank to refill it, there’s a risk that

the additive could come into contact with moisture

in the air. Humid or damp conditions can increase

the likelihood of crystallisation.

The solution (and prevention) of Adblue

crystallisation

Ceroil AdBlue Injector Cleaner contains a formula

specially developed to clean dirty urea injectors

and SCR catalysts. This prevents and removes

crystallisation, reducing performance loss. It

will clean and prevent damaging crystallisation

throughout the whole AdBlue and SCR system.

Periodic use is recommended as a preventive

measure against breakdowns.

Biomass Heating Company of the Month

The Pioneers of Automatic

Biomass Heating

In this issue of Sustainability Today we have

featured Hargassner as our Biomass Heating

Company of the Month

As sustainable energy becomes commonplace,

more businesses and homes alike are

switching to renewable energy solutions

like biomass boilers. These CO 2-neutral and ecofriendly

systems create heat by burning biological

materials such as wood chips, logs and pellets.

This cost effective, innovative solution boasts

strong environmental performance and is quickly

becoming the renewable choice for domestic and

businesses across the UK.

For over 40 years, Hargassner has been an industry

leader in innovative biomass heating systems. Since

its inception in 1984, Hargassner has pioneered ecofriendly

heating systems and its dedication to not

only achieve environmental results, but also provide

impeccable customer service has gained the company

a reputation for service and quality over the years.

A family business since its establishment,

Hargassner was built on a promise made by founder

Anton Hargassner back in 1983 to build his wife

a boiler she never needs stoke again. The son of a

farmer with a large forestry operation, Anton had

worked with wood since childhood and valued the

raw material as a sustainable, clean fuel source.

Finding the heating technology at the time to be

technically inefficient and requiring extensive

manual labour, Anton decided to build his own

system which incorporated his favoured fuel, wood,

and integrated the latest automatic convenience

without the manual labour, patenting multiple

innovative boiler designs over the years.

From this humble foundation, Anton Hargassner

went on to build the company from a single

workshop, to an international and multi awardwinning

brand which can count the Austrian

Biomass Association’s Wood Energy Award 2024

and the 2023 Austrian Society for Consumer Studies

Innovation Award, among its numerous accolades.

Hargassner supplies industry, agriculture,

greenhouses and domestic properties across Europe

with its innovative heating solutions and, with

185,000 systems installed, it has grown into one

of the leading suppliers of biomass boilers on the

continent. The company employs over 1,200 people

worldwide and has gone from strength to strength

in the last decade via company acquisitions and

groundbreaking new projects and facilities.

In September 2020 Hargassner announced the

acquisition of the biomass central heating company,

Gilles, and since then the company’s famed product

range and first-class service has been available to

UK customers. From installation, commissioning

and maintenance; to troubleshooting and supplying

spare parts, the company is a full-service provider

that takes care of both Hargassner and Gilles boilers

across the country.

At its core, Hargassner

manufactures state-of-theart

pellet, wood chip and

wood log boilers, as well as

services and installs them. Its

innovative solid fuel boilers

also guarantee the highest

efficiency levels and the lowest

emission values, setting new

benchmarks in combustion

technology and mechanical

systems.

All of Hargassner’s solutions

optimise the ecological

benefits of biomass heating. Being independent of

fossil fuels, biomass heaters are a sustainable and a

clean burning fuel source, this helps businesses of

all types contribute to their net-zero goals. By using

locally sourced or residual wood, biomass boilers also

remove the strain on imported timber, safeguarding

local ecologies for future generations.

In this green energy sector, Hargassner stands

apart for its years

of innovation in the

industry. The company

spearheaded fully

automatic heating

systems for high

user comfort and

convenience, as well as

operational reliability.

Hargassner solutions

can also be easily

combined with solar

energy, heat pumps and

other green heat sources. Maximining customer’s

net-zero potential and helping them reach their

sustainability goals and increasing energy efficiency.

Hargassner’s pellet boilers are characterized by

flexibility and the variety of options available. From a

single-family home to large commercial enterprises,

the company’s pellet boilers range from 6 to 330

kiloWatts (kW) and have been praised for their

efficiency and eco-friendliness.

The company’s wood log boilers are also highly

adaptable. Using highly efficient combustion

sequences with an implemented lambda probe,

Hargassner’s wood log boilers offer extremely robust

combustion chambers and easy-to-use control via an

advanced display panel. The company’s creative wood

gasification process also guarantees prime efficiency

levels and the lowest emission values – even with

bigger wood logs.

Hargassner’s innovative approach also extends to

heating with wood chips. The company’s versatile

cascade solutions offer outputs of up to 2,000kW

and, with its intelligent wood chip storage systems,

Hargassner also offers customisable solutions for

storing wood chips for the most efficient firing of its

boilers.

Among Hargassner’s array of biomass boilers, its

range of combination boilers stand apart for their

unparalleled versatility and efficiency. Combination

boilers combine logs and pellets for a superior

heating supply and optimised combustion, as well as

state-of-the-art control technology and Hargassner’s

combination boilers have been recognised the world

over, winning awards like the 2025 Plus X Award.

With a blend of log and pellet heating, Hargassner’s

combination boilers

benefit from supreme

flexibility. Its Nano-PK

and Smart-PK pellet

boilers, and Neo-HV and

Smart-HV log boilers,

can be combined for any

customer's needs. The

system automatically

switches from logs

to pellets, meaning

customers can utilise

multiple fuel sources in

Biomass Heating Company of the Month

line with budget and availability.

Industrial heating is a sector where biomass

boilers have been traditionally outperformed by

non-renewable solutions, however Hargassner is

shifting that perspective in a major way. Unique to

the UK market, Hargassner’s industrial grade boilers

are designed for continuous high-performance

operation and have been utilised in hospitality,

heating plants and large commercial industrial

enterprises.

One of the most unique features of Hargassner’s

business model is its role as a full-service provider.

In addition to supplying the highest quality biomass

boilers, Hargassner also installs and services its own

products across the UK.

Its team of nationwide installers provides full

technical support for installation and offers both

full and interim services, as well as system water

sampling and filtration, flue gas analysis for output

optimisation and on-site operator training. Its 360

coverage even extends to biomass optimisation and

advice, ensuring customers can make full use of their

investment in this crisis-proof and price-stable fuel

source.

The company's extensive warehouse stores

thousands of parts that are necessary for its

dedicated full-service

provision. Managing

Director, Christian

Siessl, explains the

importance of this vast

part stockpile, “It’s

absolutely necessary for

us to have a warehouse

full of spare parts. It

allows for a very quick

response time, not just

for our own engineers,

but also for installers

and homeowners alike.

So, if our installers

need any parts, they

can order directly from

us in Hereford, and

then we can ship it

straight to their site or

wherever it’s needed.”

“As only authorised

and trained service

partners are entitled to use the Hargassner quality

seal, the company ensures its highly professional

boiler service and maintenance. Christian told us this

exclusivity gives the company its professional edge,

“Our focus is solely on our own products. We don’t

stock or service third party boilers, so this hyperfocus

means we are incredibly efficient and can

deliver targeted expertise no matter what issue the

customer is facing. We have a huge range of boilers,

and we are able to provide direct service to each of

them. That’s very unique in the industry.”

2025 represented a year of expansion for Hargassner.

Its presence grew in the UK with an expanded

service and installer network, and several successful

appearances at trade

shows and exhibitions.

As the company looks

forward, the mission

remains to increase

awareness of the

viability and benefits

of biomass heating

systems by providing

the best-in-class

products to customers

of all requirements.

With over 40 years

of experience and

thousands of satisfied

clients, Hargassner

has cemented its

position as a global

leader in biomass

heating solutions.

Its commitment to

customer service is

buttressed by the

company’s steadfast dedication to innovation and its

pioneering spirit has elevated its industry standing

beyond simple heating systems.

The brand is widely known for its low emission

products and the high efficiency, reliability of both

its boilers and speedy service; but Hargassner’s

emphasis on research and quality management is

truly the company’s standout achievement. This

dedication to always strive for the best means

Hargassner is not only creating more sustainable

solutions for now, but ensuring a greener planet for

the future.

Autodiscovery: RASR Project

Soil is vital for our wellbeing: 95% of global food

production relies on soil, it is home to a quarter

of all terrestrial species, and it plays a crucial role in

storing carbon and water, which helps mitigate climate

change and prevent flooding. Yet, soils around the

world are being degraded.

Practices to improve productivity and profitability are

being promoted -precision use of inputs, reducing

tillage, crop rotations, biological fertilisers. These

practices can improve soil health, which in turn

improves yields, crop resilience and ultimately a more

economically and ecologically resilient agri-food sector

in the UK (Soil Association-Save our Soils, 2021).

Cost and accuracy associated with current soil

sampling and analysing techniques are holding back a

potential revolution in the way conventional agriculture

views and monitors our most precious asset. This has

been validated by several English farmers who strongly

advocate for this project.

The aim of RASR project is to accelerate the automation

and standardisation of soil health sampling,

monitoring and analysis to unlock soil resilience

metrics, productivity gains and emerging markets, and

progress towards net zero emissions, for UK farmers

& growers.

The ability to measure, monitor and verify (MRV) soil

health, biodiversity and carbon is becoming more

important, particularly for businesses wishing to

partake in new government schemes (DEFRA SFI,

ELMS and BNG) and carbon markets.

Groundswell Update

Regenerative farming visitors 35%

up at Groundswell 2025

in the farm’s woodland.

Groundswell 2025, which ran from 1-3

July, welcomed over 10,000 visitors to the

Cherry family’s Lannock Farm near Hitchin

in Hertfordshire. The sell-out regenerative

agriculture event included over 400 speakers from

around the world, including the ‘grandfather’ of

regen ag, North Dakotan farmer, Gabe Brown.

In addition to the diversity of topics & speakers on

the 10 stages, visitors joined farm-wide practical

demonstrations across the mosaic of farmland

habitats hearing from hands-on practitioners

about mob grazing, birdlife, hedgerow

biodiversity, no-till potato growing & some had a

magical foray into an audioscape of soil acoustics

Widely considered as THE immersive ‘regen

ag’ event, content centred on principles of

regenerative agriculture – minimising soil

disturbance, keeping the soil surface covered,

maintaining living roots, maximising crop

diversity, re-introducing livestock to the farm.

Keynote speaker Gabe Brown, the author of

his world-famous book ‘Dirt to Soil’, shared

his journey from conventional to regenerative

agriculture, emphasising the importance of

mimicking nature. He highlighted the significant

improvements made to his 6,000 acre farm,

including increasing soil organic matter, reducing

erosion, and growing higher yielding crops

without synthetic inputs since 2007, stressing

the need for diversity, living roots, and animal

integration.

Praising the spirit of the regenerative community,

he said, “When we regenerate soils, we regenerate

people, communities and natural ecosystems.

That’s the kind of thinking that we need to

scale. That’s why it’s so exciting to be here at

Groundwell and see so many people want to take

on this challenge. When we go home and look

in the mirror, we have to realise that challenge

starts with each and every one of us. That’s

the kind of thinking that we need to scale, not

more bureaucratic compliance checklists and

subsidies.”

Interjecting policy into the collective conversation,

Steve Reed, Defra Secretary of State attended the

event on 3 July. He repeated the Government’s

commitment to its £2.7 billion annual investment,

over three years, for sustainable farming and

nature’s recovery. Funding for farmers through

the Environmental Land Management Schemes

increasing by 150% to £2 billion by 2029 and

announced a £150 million capital grant round

and a reformed SFI scheme due to reopen in early

2026.

Groundswell returns to Lannock Farm next year

from 1-2 July 2026. This is our pick of the best

exhibitors from this year’s event, listed here in

alphabetical order: British Society of Soil Science.

Healthy soil, healthy food,

healthy world

Groundswell Update

It is clear, now more than ever, that we

need to protect our natural world and soils

are a major part of this. They are vital to

the sustainable future of our planet and are

essential to life as we know it. Events such

as Groundswell that focus on regenerative

agriculture and the importance of soil are a

fantastic forum for researchers, practitioners,

policymakers and stakeholders to come together

and discuss this topic further. However, there is

still a gap in the knowledge around this subject

and that is where

organisations such as

the British Society of

Soil Science come in.

The British Society of

Soil Science (BSSS)

is an established

international

membership

organisation

committed to the

study of soil in its widest aspects. The Society

brings together those working within academia,

practitioners implementing soil science in

industry and all those working with, or with

an interest in soils. We promote research and

education, both academically and in practice,

and build collaborative partnerships to help

safeguard our soil for the future.

BSSS believes that healthy soils are the

foundation of a sustainable future. Our Mission

is to support and promote the discovery of

new knowledge of soils and their role in global

sustainability, and our Vision is to ensure

sustainable soils for people and planet. We aim

to make a positive difference in the sustainable

management and long-term security of soils

that is critical to solving the environmental and

societal challenges we face today.

We have exhibited at Groundswell for several

years with our Corporate Member, ADAS, and

our stand is always busy with curious minds

looking to learn more about soils and why they

are essential to our ecosystem. As the

event continues to grow, we are always

reassured to see that the enthusiasm and

willingness to learn from delegates has not

waned in that time. Together with ADAS,

we have a soil pit on the stand where our

members can get their hands dirty and

explore soil structure and learn about

soil functions. We also go to the event to

engage with farmers and land managers

and provide advice and possible solutions

to any problems they are experiencing.

Groundswell is also an opportunity to

inspire a new generation of soil scientists

and to reinforce our message of soil health

is climate health, food health and future

health.

While Groundswell is a key highlight of

the Society, it is only part of what we do. We

run a range of conferences, events and training

courses to meet the needs of our members. We

offer grants to support vital research and give

people opportunities to learn more about a soil

specific subject. We

also help to educate

our members through

monthly webinars and

also a new podcast

which has featured our

Patron, Kate Humble,

and farmer, Andy Cato.

In addition, a big part

of our organisation is

our engagement with

the government to

influence policy that supports our soils.

Soil holds the key to our planet’s past and future

and is the answer to our food, water and energy

security, mitigating and adapting to climate

change, the safeguarding of biodiversity, and

the protection of human health. We must focus

on maintaining and restoring our soils, finding

solutions to meeting environmental targets,

achieve climate neutrality, zero pollution,

sustainable food provision and a resilient

and biodiverse environment. Many of the UN

Sustainable Development Goals cannot be

achieved without healthy soils, sustainable land

use and strong policy.

Soils that are in good and healthy condition, are

biodiverse, can store more carbon, absorb water,

improve water quality and reduce runoff from

cropland. In these soils, water is held for longer,

before seeping downwards having been purified,

contributing to groundwater formation.

Sustaining life in soil is essential to ensure soil

health, which supports our ability to grow food

and farm effectively. Put simply, healthy soil

equals a healthy planet and population.

Changing farming practices and properly

understanding life in soil is a long-term

investment and the essence for maintaining soil

health. Like us, soils need a balanced and varied

supply of nutrients in appropriate amounts to

be healthy. Agricultural systems lose nutrients

with each harvest, and if soils are not managed

sustainably, fertility is progressively lost, and

soils will produce nutrient-deficient plants.

Simply increasing soil organic matter alone

improves moisture holding capacity and soil

structure, so when it rains, more of it soaks into

the ground, reducing flooding.

Part of our strategy is to educate and inspire

the next generation of soil scientists through

knowledge exchange and engagement. We

need to come together, create knowledge, share

experiences, shape agendas and find solutions to

conserve our soils. It is time we take a ‘ground up’

approach to protect our most valuable resource,

that supports life on Earth; our soil.
