program note:Our Will to Love deals with the tenacity and perseverance of queer peopleto love ourselves and others at all in a society that tells us we aren’twelcome. The music mimics a love fighting to be felt through a relentlesslyrepeating, ascending ostinato that forms the basis of the work. Eventuallymelodic fragments coalesce in canon with each other overtop the ostinato,fighting to be heard, creating a dense fog leaving the melodic materialobscure until the end of the piece, where we get one fleeting moment ofclarity where things briefly make sense.performance notes:- in general, breathe after slurs or long notes- stagger breathe when needed- chimes and triangle are to let everything ring throughout- balance to euphonium solo at E- upper octave in trumpet 1 in mm. 54 is optional- sustains in woodwinds after rehearsal G should not have vibrato
