WHAT IS FIC?
Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC) is a painful bladder
condition with unknown cause, although it’s thought
to be related to stress, genetics, and diet. Cats with
FIC do not have a urinary infection or urinary stones,
although the symptoms are similar.
Many cats with FIC will have recurring problems
throughout their lives, especially at times of stress
(such as changes in routine), but some simple changes
can help.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
DIET CHANGES
Changing your cat to a wet diet may help.

ENVIRONMENT CHANGES
It’s important to make the following changes slowly and
sequentially, as sudden changes to the environment can
make cats feel stressed.
Increase the number of litter trays. A rule of
thumb is 1 per cat plus 1 spare, but more may be
needed when there is a history of FIC. We talked
about placing new tray(s)
Try adding some hiding places to reduce stress
Try adding access to height and/or some climbing
opportunities, such as a cat tree
Try adding cat scratching posts (at least 80cm
tall, sturdy, and well -secured)

the house. Read up on signs of cat conflict and
take note of what happens – this will be helpful
if further intervention is needed.
Ensure trays are large, easily accessible, unscented,
and cleaned daily. Do not punish accidents!
