Celebrating the Legacy of
Debbie Friedman
Debbie Friedman was a visionary singer-songwriter who
transformed modern Jewish prayer from a formal
performance into a communal, guitar-led celebration. By
blending traditional Hebrew liturgy with contemporary
folk melodies and English lyrics, she bridged the gap
between ancient texts and modern life. From summer
camps to sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall, Debbie’s
music gave a new voice to a generation of worshippers,
teaching us that the most powerful prayers are the ones
we sing together.
Did You Know...
She wrote her iconic version of the Mi Shebeirach in
1987 for a friend's healing service; today, it is sung in
thousands of congregations worldwide.
Debbie never formally learned to read or write music;
she composed her hundreds of iconic melodies by ear
and intuition.
Her "Alef-Bet" song became so popular that it was
even performed by Barney the dinosaur on TV!
In 2011, the cantorial school at Hebrew Union College
was renamed the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred
Music in her honor—the first time a major Jewish
seminary named its music school after a woman.
