Pump & Power Equipment Company Of The Month
From Supply to Solution:
W. Robinson & Sons at 100
In this issue of Business & Industry Today, we are
pleased to feature W. Robinson & Sons as our Pump &
Power Equipment Company of the Month.
Founded in 1926 in East London, W. Robinson &
Sons has evolved from modest beginnings into one
of the UK’s leading independent pump suppliers.
Originally established by the Robinson family as a
motor rewind business, the company’s early focus
was firmly rooted in repairing electric motors at a
time when replacement was neither practical nor
economical. As Executive Sales Manager Carl Hatton
explains, this hands-on repair work often brought
the team into contact with pumps attached to those
motors—an observation that would ultimately shape
the company’s future.
A pivotal moment came when customer demand
began to shift the company’s trajectory. As clients
started requesting pumps alongside the motors
being repaired, the business recognised a growing
opportunity. Over time, and through the second and
third generation of Robinson family leadership, the
company gradually expanded its offering—moving
beyond motor rewinding into pump supply, while
retaining its core technical expertise.
The most significant transformation came under
current Managing Director Greg Robinson, grandson
of the founder. Around 30 years ago, the business
invested in a substantial warehouse facility in
Hainault, Essex, marking its transition into a dedicated
pump supplier. This strategic move enabled greater
stockholding, improved distribution capabilities, and a
much broader product range, positioning the company
to meet the evolving demands of modern industry.
Now in its centenary year, W. Robinson & Sons remains
a proud family-owned enterprise. Its journey from
a small East London workshop to a major national
supplier reflects both adaptability and a deep-rooted
understanding of its market—qualities that continue to
define the business today.
“It’s taken a long time for the business to get to
where it is now,” explains Carl. “We were the bottom
feeders of the pump market. We had a good product
range, but we weren’t as strong as the manufacturers
because we didn’t have the same depth. However,
over the last 30 years, we’ve developed the business
tremendously in terms of stock and what we can offer
to the industry.”
Today, the company supplies an extensive range
of pumping equipment—from domestic and clean
water pumps to heavy-duty drainage, wastewater,
and engine-driven units—holding approximately £6.5
million worth of stock at any given time. This scale
of availability places W. Robinson & Sons among the
largest independent stockholders in the UK.
As one of the country’s most
respected independent
suppliers, the company prides
itself on doing what it has
always done best: being there
when customers need it most.
We asked Carl what makes W.
Robinson & Sons stand out in
such a competitive market:
“What really sets us apart
is the breadth of choice and
expertise we can offer in one
place. Most manufacturers
specialise in a single type of
product—take a grinder pump,
for example, they might only offer
one model to the market. We’re
different in that we work with
multiple manufacturers and hold
several variations of the same
type of pump.
That means when an engineer
is on-site, pulling a pump out of
a pit and needing a like-for-like
replacement that will fit straight
back onto an existing guide rail,
we can usually supply exactly
what they need—quickly and
without complication.
Just as important is the experience behind the
business. We’re fortunate to have a team with
decades of industry knowledge—several of us have
been in the pump industry for 25 to 30 years, and
collectively there isn’t much we haven’t come across.
Everyone has their own specialism, so between us we
can almost always identify the right technical solution.
We’ve built the business around that combination of
knowledge and availability. Holding such a high level of
stock puts us in a strong position—often comparable
with some of the biggest manufacturers themselves.
It means our customers can rely on us not just for
advice, but for immediate supply. If a customer is in
or near London, we can often deliver the same day;
elsewhere in the UK, next-day delivery is standard.”
This combination of technical expertise and product
availability is a defining strength of the business, and
a key driver of its continued success. Looking ahead,
one of the major developments this year is the update
of its extensive 288-page product catalogue—often
referred to by engineers as the “bible” of pump
solutions.
The new catalogue will feature an
expanded product range, including
key brands such as JS, Koshin, and
the newly introduced Walrus range.
The addition of Walrus is particularly
significant; despite being a wellestablished
global brand, it has not
previously had a strong presence in
the UK market, making this a major
step in strengthening the company’s
already diverse offering.
However, W. Robinson & Sons is more
than a supply platform. Now in its third
generation, the business combines
extensive product availability with deep
technical expertise. Taking a consultative
approach, the team works closely
with customers to understand each
application and deliver reliable, longterm
solutions backed by decades of
industry experience.
Alongside this, the company has made
major advances in sustainability over
the past 15 years. A large rooftop solar
array generates approximately 309 kWh
at peak output, enabling the business
to become carbon negative and supply
power to neighbouring units. This is supported by
616 kWh of on-site battery storage, allowing energy
to be efficiently stored and used across multiple
warehouses—further reducing reliance on external
sources and reinforcing its commitment to responsible
operations.

Goupil Range at CV Show
Bradshaw EV, the UK’s leading manufacturer of electric
utility vehicles, will unveil a new addition to its Goupil

unit enables efficient on-the-go cleaning, while the
integrated drop-side pick-up body adds useful carrying
capability. Designed for tasks such as cleaning
pavements, bins, walls, signs and street furniture, it
offers a versatile solution for councils, contractors and
facilities teams. Being road legal, it can move easily
between sites, while its manoeuvrability makes it ideal
for tighter urban and estate environments.
The G2 box van will also be exhibited. This compact
but robust electric vehicle is suited to last-mile

Offering a range of up to 62 miles on a single charge
and payloads of up to 533kg, depending on model, it
combines practicality with zero-emission performance.

compact all-electric refuse collection vehicle purposebuilt
for urban waste management. Featuring a

Temporary Support Tools Company Of The Month
Game-Changing Temporary
Support Tools
either low or no certified
SWL and no secure locking
slots for Acrow Props which
creates an unsafe and
unsecure method of support
which seriously diminishes
the structural integrity and
often is the case, clients are
still living in the home whilst
work is being carried out.
As the only needle support tools in the UK
that supports both inner and outer leaf walls, Prop Pal
provides vital tools for maintaining structural integrity
during structural alterations. Its core focus is to supply
the building trade with innovative tool solutions for
problems on site.
Prop Pal supplies three models of its cutting-edge
needle systems – the Prop Pal 1200, the Prop Pal Plus
1800, and the brand new Prop Pal Tandem.
In this issue of Business and Industry Today we have
featured Prop Pal Limited as our Temporary Support
Tools Company of the Month.
Traditional temporary support has always been
questionable amongst those in the trade carrying out
the work, but today’s structural alterations are bigger
in scale than ever before and with this greater scale,
comes much greater risks. For years, quality builders
have had no choice but to work unprofessionally with the
traditional unsafe makeshift methods of load bearing;
causing stress, mess and many sleepless nights.
It was during one of these sleepless nights in 2015
that Stephen Cheshire, a builder with over 30 years’
experience, had the initial idea for the Prop Pal, an
innovative temporary loading bearing support tool
system that removes the need for outdated, unsafe
traditional methods.
Builders have traditionally utilised temporary support
systems such as cantilevers, scraps of Rolled Steel
Joists (RSJ) or box sections and even more shockingly,
scraps of timber have been known to be used as needle
support. This can lead to overloaded support resulting
in deflection, lateral pressure and damage to Acrow prop
tubes as well as the instability of temporary support of
structures before the mention of the damage caused
to properties. These traditional systems also provided
With a workforce that he was responsible for, and
a building reputation to be proud of and maintain,
there was too much at stake working this way and
Stephen was on a mission to find a solution to avoid
the unthinkable. After Stephen’s initial brainwave, Prop
Pal Limited was established in 2016 and by 2018 Prop
Pal had begun shipping directly to customers, before
breaking into the hire industry in 2019.
Based in Stockport, UK, today the company supplies
tool and plant hire suppliers, builders merchants and
builders across the country with its groundbreaking
solutions and has quickly gained a reputation for its
game-changing needle systems.
The mission of Prop Pal is to allow builders to work
professionally and set standards, particularly when it
comes to small and domestic structural alterations.
Prop Pal products make the job safe, easy and secure,
essential elements for builders to work professionally
and safely.
Unlike conventional and unsafe methods used in the
building trade to date, the Prop Pal Needle is designed
so that a builder’s prop location into the needle is
locked in position once it has been wound up. At the
other end the swivel plate has four holes where it can be
fixed to the floorboards, securing it in position.
The Prop Pal Needle is manufactured from S275
Structural Steel and has been proof tested to a safe load
capacity of 1050kg. It also causes minimal disturbance
to flooring and ceilings as well as leaving timber floors
intact for secure fastening to internal floors. The product
also offers no lateral force on builders props, as weight
is transferred along the Prop Pal needle down through
standard builder’s props.
Its 1200mm minimum length creates more space for
access and installing steel beams and the dimensions
of the needle ensure that it will slide through an
aperture (on a home property wall) the size of a metric
size brick and takes away the uncertainty from propping.
The longer Prop Pal Plus extends the original model to
1800mm and is the ideal model to support stone build
and small commercial properties where the walls are
typically deeper. Featuring the same robust construction
of the 1200, all models of the Prop Pal Needle System
can be used when floor joists run adjacent or parallel to
the beams being installed.
Specifically designed for tool hire suppliers, the
company’s latest needle system is the Prop Pal Tandem.
Tandem can be used as a standard needle system with
mirror end Acrow slots for secure propping or with the
included adjustable jacking screw plate shoe at both
ends, negating the need to remove jacking screw plate
parts from the main body and helping to reduce the cost
for replacing missing components.
As the country’s leading supplier of temporary support
tools, Prop Pal stands out as a true innovator in the
sector. Its needle systems are the only tool of its kind
and have fast become an essential piece of kit for
builders working on structural alterations across the
country.
Regardless of which needle solution is used, Prop Pal’s
needle products boast a whopping 1050kg working load
limit and secure locking slots at both ends of the needle.
The company’s unique jacking screw plate design, along
with the versatility and
dimensions of Prop Pal,
allows builders to work
smarter, safer and more
efficiently.
Owner Stephen Cheshire
told us this versatility has
been a deciding factor in
the product’s widespread
adoption,

Temporary Support Tools Company Of The Month
“Our patented and designed protected Prop Pal Needle
System is incredibly versatile in its use and no other
support tool can do what ours can do, hence why it
quickly became a popular and highly sought after tool
throughout the UK.”
Prop Pal’s commitment to safety is also outstanding
in the sector, with Prop Pal products having been
awarded with safe working load certification, CE
marks and product liability insurance which
provides peace of mind not only to property
owners, but also builders and operators
on site.
A proud member of Made In Britain,
Prop Pal manufactures all its products
in the UK and uses as many local
suppliers as possible to support
businesses in the region. This policy
also ensures Prop Pal upholds excellent quality control
and consistently delivers stellar customer service,
as well as reduces the carbon emission impact of
importing from overseas.
The success of Prop Pal and its myriad temporary
support systems has been underpinned by a dedication
to providing the perfect solutions for hire partners
throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland, with well
over 100 hire partners and 1000 tool hire suppliers
supplying Prop Pal.
Prop Pal’s successful hire store locator, as well as
its first National Radio Campaign with Fix Radio,
demonstrates this dedication. When supplying Prop
Pal, hire partners can make a quick return profit after
just seven weeks of hire and the product’s minimal
maintenance requirements, robust design and safety
credentials has made Prop Pal a hit with builders and
hire partners alike.
Alongside the company’s expanded growth in hire
centres and partners last year, Prop Pal has recently
released a brand-new product called the Prop Pal
TempLin.
The TempLin is a temporary lintel system which provides
a safer, time efficient and secure temporary wall support
for window fitters and builders who are looking to install
permanent lintels or fit new windows. Additionally,
the TempLin functions as a perfect system for cavity
cleaning once temporarily installed.
Revealed at 2026’s Executive Hire Show in Coventry
this February, and set to be officially launched for sale in
April this year, the latest addition to Prop Pal’s product
lineup provides the building trade with an extremely
robust and lightweight option for window fitting. The
system is easy for one man to install comfortably and
allows operators to do away with the traditional Acrow
props and two-man Strong Boys methods.
Looking toward the future, the company plans to
continue building on its upward domestic trajectory by
bringing more cutting-edge solutions to the UK and Irish
markets. As well as this, Prop Pal is looking forward to
releasing its products to a wider international market
with scope for worldwide adoption of its patented needle
systems.
Prop Pal’s core mission to provide safe, easy and
secure temporary support tools to the industry has
fundamentally changed the sector. Where previously
unreliable, unsafe and inefficient support systems were
the norm, Prop Pal has provided a complete solution.
Its sector-defining needle systems not only allow
for more stable and robust projects, but mean
that smaller and domestic projects can benefit
from the same efficiency seen on larger sites.
Its dedication to delivering innovative, highquality
tools is revolutionising the construction
industry and its commitment to advancing
construction technology through continuous
innovation and end user-focused solutions, has
cemented Prop Pal’s position as a favourite within a
well-established industry.

CDA: Powering Franchise Growth
Through Smart Digital Solutions
In today’s competitive franchise landscape, having
a strong digital presence is no longer a luxury - it’s
a necessity. From generating consistent local leads
to managing operations across multiple territories,
franchise businesses face a unique set of challenges
that require more than off-the-shelf solutions. This
is where CDA, a specialist digital agency, is making a
measurable difference.
CDA is a specialist digital agency helping ambitious
businesses unlock growth through bespoke eCommerce
platforms, custom software development and
performance-driven marketing. What sets the agency
apart is its deep expertise in working with franchise
businesses; developing tailored booking platforms,
franchise management systems and localised
marketing strategies designed not just to look good, but
to perform.
Unlike the traditional agency approach that focus
primarily on aesthetics and rushed delivery, CDA
takes a more strategic and consultative approach.
While many website developers will rely on templates
to simply deliver a visually appealing website, CDA
goes several steps further. Every project begins with
a detailed analysis of the client’s business model,
operational processes and target audience. This
ensures that every digital solution is not only welldesigned,
but purposeful, functional and aligned with
long-term commercial objectives.
For franchise businesses in particular, this level of
understanding is critical. Each franchise network must
balance the needs of the central brand with those of
individual franchisees. CDA addresses this by creating
systems that empower both. Their custom booking
websites, for example, are designed to drive enquiries
at a local level while maintaining brand consistency
across all locations. This enables franchisees to benefit
from targeted lead generation, while franchisors retain
oversight and control.
In addition to front-end websites, CDA develops
comprehensive franchise management systems
that streamline operations. These platforms can
integrate bookings, customer data, reporting and
communications into one centralised hub, reducing
administrative burden and improving efficiency across
the network. The result is a more cohesive and scalable
franchise operation, supported by technology that
evolves alongside the business.
Beyond software development, marketing is another
core pillar of CDA’s offering. Recognising that no two
territories are the same, the agency develops localised
marketing strategies tailored to individual franchise
areas. This includes targeted digital advertising, regionspecific
SEO and data-driven campaigns designed to
generate high-quality
leads where they matter
most.
This local-first approach
ensures that franchisees
are not competing for
attention on a national
level, but instead are
positioned strongly
within their own
communities, helping
to maximise return on
investment and drive
sustainable growth.
What truly sets CDA
apart, however, is its
partnership-led mindset.
Rather than acting as a typical supplier, the team works
closely with clients as a strategic partner – offering
ongoing advice, recommendations and support based
on real-world experience.
Importantly, CDA takes a holistic view of each client’s
digital ecosystem. In addition to the solutions they
design and develop in-house, they regularly recommend
third-party systems and tools that can benefit the

A smarter way to build
a business in the
e-commerce boom
A new franchise brand is entering
the UK logistics market with a
smarter, more human approach to
parcel delivery.
Speedy Parcels combines proven
franchising expertise with a territorybased
model designed for modern,
commercially minded operators.
Built by a team with a successful
franchising and logistics pedigree,
the brand flips the traditional
courier model on its head. Instead
of managing vans and drivers,
franchisees become the parcel
person for local eBay sellers,
Shopify brands, Etsy traders, TikTok
shop owners and other fast-growing
creators & SMEs who ship daily.
At the heart of the model is a
powerful tech platform that makes
shipping faster, simpler and more
cost-effective. Customers gain
access to rates and delivery options
they could never secure alone,
saving time and money while having
a real person to turn to locally.
Behind the scenes, Speedy Parcels
handles carrier management,
operations and support, allowing
franchisees to focus on building
relationships and growing a loyal
customer base within their exclusive
territory.

Precision perfected:
Experience the future of
inspection and metrology with
Vision Engineering at MACH
annotating, and sharing digital images. Its
"eyepiece-less" design allows for a natural head
position, reducing neck and eye strain, which
directly correlates to fewer errors and higher
productivity on the assembly line.
As the UK’s premier manufacturing and engineering
showcase returns, the industry finds itself at a critical
crossroads. The demand for tighter tolerances, faster
throughput, and uncompromising quality has never
been higher. For the readers of Business and Industry
Today, the challenge isn't just about making things; it’s
about measuring, inspecting, and perfecting them with
absolute confidence.
This year at MACH, Vision Engineering invites you to
explore the very latest innovative optical, digital and
metrology technology. Located at Stand 19-630, we are
showcasing a comprehensive suite of solutions
designed to bridge the gap between human
ingenuity and machine precision. From the
world-renowned ergonomics of our stereo
microscopes to the rigorous data-driven
accuracy of our CMMs, our lineup this year is
our most ambitious yet.
The Ergonomic Revolution: Mantis PIXO and Lynx EVO
At the heart of any quality control process is the
operator. Fatigue is the enemy of precision, which is why
Vision Engineering has spent decades perfecting the
science of inspection ergonomics.
The Mantis PIXO is the latest evolution of our iconic
Mantis range. It’s a digital/optical hybrid stereo
microscope that allows operators to view high-quality
optical images while simultaneously capturing,
Complementing this is the Queen’s Award winning
Lynx EVO. For those requiring higher magnification
without sacrificing the 3D depth perception
essential for intricate tasks like PCB soldering
or medical device assembly, the Lynx EVO is
the industry benchmark. It offers a stunning optical
performance that must be seen in person to be fully
appreciated.
Digital Agility: EVO Cam HALO 4K and ProteQ VISO
Speed and clarity are the dual pillars of modern
industrial inspection. The EVO Cam HALO 4K is a highperformance
digital microscope designed for those who
need to switch between high-magnification detail and
a wide field of view instantly. With its integrated 360°
rotating viewer, the HALO allows you to look around
a component, rather than just down at it—perfect for
detecting side-wall defects or checking thread integrity.
We are also proud to showcase the ProteQ VISO,
a collaborative digital 3D system engineered for
environments where precision must be matched by
protection. It not only presents a high quality 3D image
on a flat screen but enables remote viewing of the same
3D image through live image streaming, connecting
colleagues, supply chain partners or customers
instantly.
Metrology Simplified: Swift PRO EDGE and LVC 200
Moving from "inspecting" to "measuring," Vision
Engineering’s metrology solutions at MACH highlight our
ability to handle everything from one-off prototypes to
high-volume production runs.
The Swift PRO EDGE is an incredibly intuitive
optical and video measuring system. It’s
designed for the shop floor—rugged,
easy to use, and capable of delivering
sub-micron measurements. By combining
a high-resolution video camera with an
optical microscope, it gives users the
best of both worlds: the automated "edge
detection" of video and the human-verified
accuracy of optics.
For those looking to automate their
quality control, the LVC 200 is a
must-see. This fully automated CNC
video measuring system is built for
speed. It allows manufacturers to
program complex measurement
routines for batches of
components, ensuring that every
part that leaves the floor meets
the exact specifications required
by the most demanding sectors,
including aerospace and automotive.
The Powerhouse of the Shop Floor:
Deltron 370
Perhaps the most robust addition to our
stand this year is the Deltron 370. This is
a compact, shop-floor CMM (Coordinate
Measuring Machine) that defies the
notion that high-level metrology requires
a temperature-controlled laboratory.
The Deltron 370 features a unique delta-mechanism
that allows for high levels of repeatability and accuracy
while maintaining a small footprint. It’s designed to
be placed right next to your CNC machines, providing
immediate feedback to operators and ensuring
that "first-off" parts are correct every single time. Its
resistance to shop-floor vibrations and temperature
fluctuations makes it a game-changer for integrated
manufacturing environments.
Why Visit Stand 19-630
At Vision Engineering, we believe that seeing is
believing. Technical specifications on a datasheet can
only tell half the story; the true value of our systems lies
in their ease of use, the clarity of the optics, and the
seamless integration of the software.
When you visit us at Stand 19-630, you’re not just
looking at equipment; you’re engaging with a team
of experts who understand the nuances of the
industrial process. We invite you to bring your trickiest
components to the stand. Challenge us to find that
elusive defect or to measure that complex geometry.
Whether you are looking to upgrade a single inspection
station or overhaul your entire metrology workflow,
the Vision Engineering booth is your destination for
innovation.
We look forward to welcoming you to Stand 19-630 at
MACH. Let’s redefine what’s possible in your production
process together.

Precision in flight: Why UK drone manufacturers
are switching to lightweight motion
In the rapidly evolving UK
aerospace and sub-sea
sectors, “failure is not
an option” is more than
a slogan—it is a critical
design requirement.
As mission profiles for
autonomous vehicles and
satellite constellations
expand, engineers face a
relentless challenge: The
Payload Paradox.
If you follow UAV and
robotics development on
LinkedIn, you have likely
seen the core frustration of
the R&D phase. One aerospace engineer put it bluntly:
“We have the sensor suite ready and the power budget
set, but the weight of the mechanical joints is eating
our flight time. We need the stiffness of a crossed
roller bearing, but we can’t afford the ‘mass penalty’ of
standard units.”
By choosing components engineered for highperformance
dynamics, UK manufacturers are breaking
this paradox and extending mission ranges.
The LCRB Solution: Aerospace-Grade Rigidity,
Miniature Mass
The LCRB Lightweight Crossed Roller Bearings
represent a shift for designers who require maximum
performance within a strict weight budget. By
optimising metallurgical properties and housing, we
ABB to Upgrade
Automation,
Electrification, and Drives
ABB has secured three contracts
with SSAB, the global leader in
high-strength steel production, to
deploy automation, electrification,
main stand motors, and drives
technologies in Borlänge, Sweden.
ABB is part of a reinvestment
project at SSAB Borlänge's
hot-rolling mill, supporting the
steelmaker's green transition goals,
carried out between 2024 and
2027.
SSAB operates in over 50 countries
with production sites in Finland,
Sweden, and the US, producing
8.8 million tons of steel annually.
With ambitions to offer fossil-free
steel by 2026 and reduce carbon
emissions long-term, SSAB is
regarded as a sustainability leader.
The Borlänge mill, running since
1878, is the "heart" of SSAB
operations. Modernizing it will
secure production stability, improve
efficiency, and support the new
SEK 50 billion fossil-free steel

deliver exceptional rigidity without the traditional bulk.
Maximising the Performance-to-Weight Ratio
Every gram saved can translate into cost savings
or extra operational life. The LCRB’s lightweight
construction ensures gimbals and arms remain agile,
reducing load on propulsion systems.
The Benefit: Achieving an ideal performance-to-weight
ratio allows for larger payloads or extended battery life.
High Stability Under Complex Loads
Despite reduced mass, there is no compromise
on integrity. The LCRB uses rollers crossed at right
angles to handle radial, thrust, and moment loads
simultaneously.
The Benefit: This ensures minimal deflection and high
positioning accuracy, even during complex manoeuvres.
Material Integrity for Demanding Environments

Belzona Repairs
Propeller Shaft on Ship
Carrying Olympic Torch
On May 8th, 2024, the historic Ship
the Belem navigated into Marseille,
marking the arrival of the Olympic
torch in France. Over 150,000
spectators gathered as the Ship
sailed into the bay, accompanied by
more than a thousand boats. Last
year, Alliatech, one of Belzona’s
French distributors, helped restore
this historical Ship.
The History of the Belem:
Considered the last great French
merchant Ship, the Belem is a
three-mast Vessel, 34 metres
tall and 58 metres long, with 22
sails covering 1,200 m² and two
575-horsepower diesel engines.
Carrying the Olympic flame was
not its first fire: during its maiden
voyage in 1896—the same year as
the first modern Olympics—the Ship
caught ablaze en route to Belem,
Brazil, but was repaired.
The Belem’s Olympic Voyage:
After the flame was lit in Athens
on April 27th, it traveled 2,000
km to Marseille, watched 24/7.
Celebrations included 800
luminous drones forming a torch, a
pyrotechnic show, and an Air Force
flyover drawing Olympic rings and
the French flag as spectators lined
the streets.
Preserving History:
Alliatech repaired the corroded
propeller shaft using Belzona 1111
and two coats of Belzona 5821,
preserving the 127-year-old shaft
while protecting it from future
seawater damage.

the Made Smarter Innovation Digital
Supply Chain Hub programme to apply
deep tech solutions to strengthen
national supply chains. Each company
will receive up to £150,000 to tackle
challenges in cybersecurity, carbon
management, and data governance.
Building on the success of the Digital
Supply Chain Hub, which has helped
over forty startups and SMEs secure
more than £3 million in funding, the
new participants—including Orpheus

accelerate the practical application of
deep tech to address cyber-attacks,
outages, and regulatory hurdles.
Orpheus Cyber will identify
vulnerabilities and security breaches
in supply chains, using data to
mitigate risks and prevent data leaks
across networks. Farm Carbon Toolkit
will enhance carbon sequestration in
domestic agriculture, partnering with
the Food Testbed, including Contained
Technologies and Lincolnshire
Field Products, to develop secure
digital tools for fresh and perishable
markets.
Another technology partner will work
on data governance challenges,
building trust around sharing
information between organisations
to foster efficient, sustainable supply
chains.
The programme responds to growing
supply chain pressures: 74% of UK IT
decision makers reported software
vulnerabilities last year. A showcase
in March 2025 will allow companies
to present findings, network, and
strengthen UK digital supply chains.

Mesh Supports Forestry England’s Drive to Net
Zero at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum
Energy performance specialist Mesh has successfully
delivered a sustainability project for Forestry England
at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, helping to
improve the energy efficiency and long-term resilience of
buildings on the 600-acre estate.
already been implemented, delivering immediate energy
efficiency improvements whilst informing longer-term
refurbishment and upgrading plans.
Sophie Nash, Programme Manager at Forestry England:
The historic arboretum near Tetbury, managed by
Forestry England, is one of the UK’s most visited
heritage sites, attracting hundreds of thousands of
visitors every year.
Rapid growth in visitor numbers, combined with the
impact of climate change, prompted the need for a
clear, practical plan to reduce energy use and carbon
emissions across the estate’s facilities including the
visitor centre, café and restaurant and offices.
Following a competitive tender, Mesh was appointed to
develop an evidence-based strategy to guide building
upgrades, balancing sustainability ambitions
and the transition away from fossil fuels in
this sensitive rural and heritage setting.
Mesh took a whole-building approach,
assessing how the buildings on the estate
currently perform, how they are used at
different times of the year in line with
fluctuating seasonal visitor patterns, and
how future changes to climatic conditions
could affect running costs and user comfort.
This has enabled Forestry England to make
informed decisions on heating solutions,
energy supply and
building fabric improvements,
and to plan upgrades in a phased
approach. It provides a clear
framework for improving energy
efficiency, and importantly, for
moving away from fossil fuels.
Several of the strategies have
“Our aim with this project was to use detailed analysis to
steer our specifications for remediation and upgrading
works to improve the energy efficiency and sustainability
of our most heavily-used buildings at Westonbirt and
the resilience of our electricity infrastructure to support
future growth.
The assessments carried out which were very thorough
and detailed, provide us with valuable insight to inform
the design and specification of refurbishment and
remediation works in a phased approach.”
Doug Johnson, Founder and Director of Mesh, said:
“For rural estates, landowners, parks and visitor
attractions across the UK, this project for Forestry
England clearly demonstrates how a data-led, wholebuilding
approach can accelerate decarbonisation and
create a clear route towards net zero – even in the most
sensitive heritage environments and landscapes.”
The Westonbirt project reflects growing
demand from rural estates, landowners
and visitor attractions for clear
sustainability strategies that reduce risk,
improve performance and support longterm
resilience.

UK Brewery First to Install
High-Temp Heat Pump,
Cuts Emissions 90%
A British brewery has become the
first UK business to trial a new
type of heat pump which can cut
emissions by up to 90 percent.
Hepworth Brewery, based in
Sussex, is using a Greensteam heat
pump, developed by Surbiton startup
Futraheat, to deliver low-carbon
heat to fuel the brewing process.
Unlike most heat pumps, which
deliver hot water up to around
80°C, the Futraheat heat pump can
produce steam up to 130°C.
The prototype is part of a longterm
sustainability drive. Hepworth
Brewery expects it will reduce
energy consumption and carbon
emissions from wort boiling by up
to 90 percent, while lowering fuel
costs.
Heat is vital to brewing and is
usually delivered by gas or oil
boilers. With the new system,
Hepworth can recycle waste vapour,
normally vented, and boost it via
Futraheat’s heat pump to deliver
Pumps & Valves
steam back at 130°C. This reduces
reliance on a CO2-emitting oil
boiler.
The key is a patented turbo
compressor, TurboClaw, which can
boost temperatures by up to 60
degrees.
Futraheat says the technology can
be applied beyond brewing, as
around 70 percent of UK industrial
energy demand is for heat, much of
which could be delivered by hightemperature
heat pumps.

Osprey Survey Shows Rising
EV Charging Commitment
Among UK Landlords
Osprey Charging, the UK's leading
and fastest-growing EV rapidcharging
network, has released
research highlighting strides made
by commercial landlords in the East
of England and across the UK toward
embracing public EV charging.
The survey of 500 landlords
emphasises growing commitment
to sustainability and future-proofing
commercial spaces.
Polling shows just under 1 in 5 (19%)
landlords currently offer public EV
charging in 31–40% of their spaces.
However, 94% of landlords in the
East of England plan to continue
offering EV charging over the next
1–2 years, demonstrating strong
regional commitment.
Osprey’s findings show most
landlords recognise the commercial
advantages. Nearly nine in ten
say EV charging is important for
attracting new and retaining existing
customers (86% and 87%). Similarly,
85% believe it ensures their site
remains in demand, while 75% say it
increases dwell time and 72% report
higher footfall.
In terms of rental prospects, 84%
believe EV charging increases the
likelihood of renting spaces, rising to
92% in the East of England.
The rollout of chargers is progressing
rapidly, with 72% offering charging
at up to half their sites. Osprey’s
network includes over 1,100 rapid
and ultra-rapid chargers nationwide,
including 168 across 45 sites in the
East of England.
Jake Goldby said EV charging is now

CyrusOne KEP Breaks
Ground on First Data Center
in Japan
CyrusOne KEP, a joint
venture formed in May
2023 between CyrusOne
and Kansai Electric
Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO),
has broken ground on its
first data centre project
in Japan.
The hyperscale facility, CyrusOne
KEP OSK1, is located in the
Kansai area Keihanna Availability
Zone, a key data centre hub.
With 70MVA incoming power,
it will deliver 48MW IT capacity
across 11,562 square metres of
technical space within a four-storey
building, housing six 8MW data
halls. Construction will begin in the
second half of 2025, with the first
16MW operational by Q1 2028.
Eric Schwartz, CEO of CyrusOne,
highlighted the partnership’s
strength in combining data centre
expertise with KEPCO’s reliable and
sustainable power delivery. KEPCO
President Nozomu Mori added that
the venture aims to invest 1 trillion
yen over the next decade, targeting
900MW total incoming power.
U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel
noted the collaboration strengthens
Japan’s position as a technology
leader.
Sustainability is central to the
project, with design features to
minimise environmental impact
and support the local community,
including acoustic treatments and
carefully considered architecture.
The development is expected to
create local jobs and support the
growth of the Keihanna area and
Japan’s wider economy.
