RABBI MEEKA’S MUSINGS
Last month, we lost Irwin, our beloved Shamash and the devoted
caregiver of our temple community. Irwin was truly a one-of-akind
soul. In a note I shared with the congregation, I described
him as an Or Ganuz—a hidden spark of God’s light in the world.
Irwin was a man of few words, yet his
presence spoke volumes. His quiet
dedication, his kindness, and his steady
spirit touched everyone who entered our
doors. I miss you, my friend, more than
words can express.
Yom HaShoah serves as a poignant
reminder of the darkness that can lurk
beneath the fragile façade of civilization. As
antisemitism and hatred toward Jews
continue to rise across the globe, the call to
remember the Holocaust becomes ever
more urgent. Each of us has a responsibility
to ensure that the seeds of Nazism and
antisemitic violence are never allowed to
take root again.
Remembering the six million Jews who
perished in the Holocaust is not just an act
of memory—it is a mitzvah. Year after year,
we gather to honor their lives, their
legacies, and the lessons they impart, to
ensure that such horrors are never
repeated.
On March 8, members of TAS attended a
profoundly moving concert, "Overcoming
Adversity Through Music," presented by the
Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra. The
performance, dedicated to composers and
music connected to the Holocaust, was
especially meaningful to us, as our own
Brian Folus conducted with great grace and
passion

Please invite everyone you know.
We will gather for our annual Holocaust
Memorial Service and presentation, with

the powerful story of Henry and Betty
Herman, and the profound question: “Do I
owe my life to Hitler?”
Their daughter, Ellen Azrael, will share
the story of her parents' experiences
growing up in Germany, the events that
ultimately brought them together, and
the life they built in Reading,
Pennsylvania. All are invited and
encouraged to attend. Please see the
attached flyer for further details.
Never Again — Is Now.
With love always,
Rabbi Meeka

FINDING THE PEACE IN
PRESENCE
From the Executive Director
There is a specific kind of bravery required to be part of a
community in an uncertain world. It is the bravery of showing
up, of opening our doors, and of choosing to be seen. Lately,
the world outside has felt a bit louder, and the shadows a bit
longer. I know that for many of us, there is a quiet weight we
carry—an anxiety that hums in the background, making us
wonder if the sanctuary we have built is strong enough to hold
us.
I want you to hear me when I say: you are safe here.
Over the past year, we have done the heavy, quiet work of
strengthening our physical home. We have installed the locks,
the cameras, and the systems that stand watch so you don’t
have to. We are as safe as we can be—trained, prepared, and
built on a sturdy foundation. But I also know, as an educator
and as a neighbor, that a house is not a home just because the
doors are locked. A home is defined by the warmth of the light
in the window and the breath of the people inside.
In my work with children, I am often reminded that fear is
almost always born from a lack of understanding. The remedy
to that uncertainty isn't just a stronger bolt on the door; it is
education, communication, and the sacred act of truly
knowing one another. When we look at our "Mosaic"—that
beautiful, stained-glass assembly of stories and faces—we see
that our strength doesn't come from being identical, but from
being inseparable.
This is why the "soft" parts of our community life matter so
deeply right now. Our safety is enhanced when we are
invested in one another’s lives. When I ask for your time—not
just your resources, but your presence—it is because you are
the heartbeat of this sanctuary.
We are looking for those among us who are willing to serve as
Greeters. This isn't just an administrative task; it is the act of
being the first hand extended in friendship. A greeter is the
bridge that turns a stranger into a guest and a nervous silence
into a shared breath. When we wear our nametags and greet
one another by name, we aren't just following a policy; we are
telling each other, "I see you. You belong here. You are home."

FINDING THE PEACE IN PRESENCE
cont’d
We can strengthen these bonds in simple,
beautiful ways this month. I invite you to
reach out to a congregant you haven’t heard
from in a while, or to bring a friend with you
to a service. This is especially meaningful as
we approach Passover. While the first night
of Seder is often spent with immediate
family, the second night is when we gather
as a congregational family. For those whose
families are far away, our Seder on April 2nd
is your table. It is a night when no one should
have to feel the "quietness" of being alone.
We will also hold space for the somber
moments that remind us why our community
is so rare and precious. On April 10th, we
gather for Yizkor to memorialize our loved
ones. This year, we especially honor the
memory of Irwin Rosenfeld, our lifelong
Shamash, whose dedication to this house
was a light in itself. The following evening,
April 11th, we will observe Yom HaShoah.
These moments can feel heavy, but when we
share them, that weight is distributed across
all our shoulders. I am profoundly grateful
for the support I see you show one another
every single day. We may not always hear the
specific needs of the person sitting in the
row behind us, and we may not always hear
the "thank you" for simply being there, but
please know that your presence is a gift to
someone else in the room.
Temple Adas Shalom is a sanctuary of
support. Let us not let the noise of the world
keep us from the peace we find in each
other. Come in, sit a while, and help us hold
this space. We are incomplete without you,
and together, we have everything we need to
keep the darkness at bay.
With love and gratitude,
DeNae Harmon

A LEGACY OF LIGHT AND A FUTURE OF STRENGTH
TAS Board
This month, our community is held in a
spirit of both mourning and deep
gratitude as we remember Irwin
Rosenfeld, our beloved Shamash, who
passed away on March 6th. Having spent
his entire life as a part of Temple Adas
Shalom—the same spiritual home his
parents helped build—Irwin was a quiet,
steady light in our sanctuary. His
kindness was felt by everyone who
crossed our threshold. We extend our
deepest sympathies to his brother
Roy, sister-in-law Jacqueline, and the
entire Rosenfeld family. May his
memory always be a blessing to us.
Community Security and Vigilance
The recent attack on a synagogue in West
Bloomfield, Michigan, has weighed heavily
on our hearts. While we are relieved that
the community there is safe, it reinforces
the Board’s commitment to our own
security protocols. We are currently
working with local law enforcement and
our security team to ensure continued
vigilance.
To support these efforts, we ask for your
cooperation with two important measures:
Name Tags: Wearing your templeissued
name tag is an existing policy
that we will now be enforcing more
strictly. This is a vital way for our staff
and security to quickly identify
members and guests.
Greeter Volunteers: We are looking for
more members to serve as greeters
during services. A welcoming face at
the door is our best first line of safety
and community building.
Financial Stewardship and Support
We are pleased to share that our
congregational pledges are currently
trending ahead for the year. We are
grateful for this early support, which
allows us to plan more effectively. For
those families who have not yet had the
chance to participate, we encourage
you to do so this month to help us
maintain this positive momentum.
While we have seen an increase in
wage expenses this year, these
costs have been successfully offset
by dedicated grant funding. Our
leadership continues to actively apply
for additional grants to support our
staffing and educational needs.
Call to Action: Donor Matching
One of the most impactful ways you can
support the temple at no additional cost
to you is through Employer Matching
Gifts. Many companies will match a
portion of your donations to 501(c)(3)
organizations. Please take a moment to
check your employer’s giving portal (such
as Benevity) and search for Temple Adas
Shalom or enter our EIN: 52-6056658.
This simple step significantly increases
the value of your contribution to our
community.

HVAC Progress: We have successfully
replaced four circuit breakers this

HVAC systems. The installation of three

Tammy and Jon Acker, and Sheena
Havens to our membership, and we
look forward to their involvement in
temple life. We also welcome Stacia

the role of Social Action Chair.

RECAP: Navigating the "Brave New World"
We recently gathered for a vital and eye-opening
session, "Brave New World: Protecting Your Health,
Wealth, and Identity." It was a truly successful
afternoon of empowerment in the digital age.
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our
distinguished guest speakers, Dr. Carol Vidal from
Johns Hopkins and Mr. Jeff Karberg from the
Maryland Office of the Attorney General. Their
insights into maintaining our mental well-being and
securing our digital footprints provided everyone in
attendance with practical tools and a renewed sense
of confidence. Staying informed is our best defense,
and we are proud to provide a forum for such
essential conversations.

SPOTLIGHT: An Evening with Rabbi Meeka
Our Sisterhood, Brotherhood & Adult Education are honored to host
an evening with Rabbi Meeka. She will share personal experiences
and reflections from her new book, A Mother to Many: Creating a
Meaningful Childless Jewish Life.
An excerpt from the book:
“A Mother to Many explores the
heartache, acceptance, and lessons
learned from the author’s journey
as a childless, married
clergywoman in a Jewish world
that values fertility and
motherhood as sacred obligations.
Part textual learning, part lessons
of an impassioned teacher, the
book shows how naming the
experience “childfree,” instead of
“childless,” helps to recast the
experience and open new avenues
of “mothering” and “parenting”
that can fill the spirit and bring
blessings to the individual and the
community alike. For readers with
similar experiences, the book offers
solace, wisdom, and gentle
guidance. For the Jewish
community and beyond, it offers
ways to welcome those who are
without children.”

meaningful traditions, and

Growing Through Community,
Memory, and Meaning
Over the past month, we have celebrated,
learned, and created lasting memories —
from the joy of Purim to the reflection of
our Model Seder. These experiences are
what make our religious school so special,
giving our students opportunities to
connect deeply with Jewish life, values, and
one another.
As we look ahead, we are especially excited
for one of the most meaningful events of
the year — our upcoming Shabbaton.
Purim Carnival:
A Joy-Filled Celebration
Last month’s Purim Carnival was so much
fun, filled with laughter, creativity, and
incredible energy from our entire
community.
We are so grateful for the wonderful
support from our congregation, the Early
Learning Center, and our broader local
community. Seeing our students
surrounded by friends, families, and
neighbors made the celebration even
more special.

Honoring Memory Through
Community
On March 15, our students took part in a
special and heartfelt project — painting
stones in memory of Dan Hurst, a beloved
member of our religious school
community.
The students first learning about the
tradition of placing stones on the final
resting place of loved ones through the
children’s book, “Stones for Grandpa”.
This meaningful activity gave students the
opportunity to reflect, create, and
contribute to a lasting tribute. The stones
will be used at his unveiling on April 19,
serving as a symbol of love,
remembrance, and the support of our
Kehillah community.
Our Shabbaton is just around the corner,
and we are incredibly excited for this
special opportunity to come together as a
community for a meaningful, joy-filled
experience.
This optional overnight event will be filled
with learning, connection, tradition,
artistic expression, and fun — creating
memories that will stay with our families

MEMORY, AND MEANING

Friday, April 17 | 7:30 pm
Join us after our Family Shabbat Service on Friday, April 17 for an evening of improv and
hilarity with The Bible Players! This adults-only comedy event features a lively mix of improv,
audience games, clever sketches, and Jewish-themed humor that’s sure to have you laughing all
night. The Bible Players are a nationally touring Torah comedy team that uses theater and
improv to bring Jewish stories and values to life with humor and heart.
We first experienced this talented group at a teaching conference and can confidently say this
show will leave you in stitches — the funny kind!
This performance also serves as a fundraiser for the Shabbaton and Religious School. Tickets
are $20 per person in advance or $25 at the door, and we encourage you to invite friends for a
fun night out in support of our community. (Babysitting provided)

SPRING PLANNING: SUMMER
SUN AND SCHOOL SUCCESS
HJC Early Learning Center
As we move into the spring, our focus at the Early Learning Center is
on ensuring a smooth transition into our upcoming programs. We are
now officially accepting registration for both our Summer 2026
"Traveling the World" sessions and the 2026–2027 School Year.
To help our families plan accordingly, here are the key updates for the
next season of growth at the ELC:
New for 2026–2027: School Food Program
We are excited to announce the launch of our new food program for
the upcoming school year! Starting this fall, the ELC will offer daily
lunch for purchase.
Equitable Access: We will provide free and reduced-price lunch
options for qualifying families to ensure every student has
access to nutritious meals.
Daily Snacks: We are pleased to share that healthy snacks will
now be provided to all students free of charge.
Priority Enrollment & Membership Benefits
We operate on a rolling admission basis, and spots in our Toddler (1+),
Two’s, Three’s, and Pre-K rooms fill up quickly. As a reminder to our
temple family, Temple Adas Shalom members receive a dedicated
tuition discount for the school year. Please ensure your enrollment fee
is submitted with your packet to secure your child’s placement.
Meadowvale Elementary:
Before & Aftercare We continue to offer robust Before and Aftercare
for Meadowvale Elementary school-age students. As a designated bus
stop location, students can be picked up or dropped off right here at
the temple, making the transition between school and care seamless for
parents.

Security Corner: A Message from the TAS Security Committee
Rest assured that in these uncertain times our team is working
diligently to secure our campus and keep everyone safe. We
track incidents nationwide in real time to ensure our security
resources are always deployed effectively, and our ELC staff
has increased their regular safety practices.

SAFETY & SECURITY NEWS
The following is just one of five parts of the “Best
Practices” listed for Safety & Security, located in our
Temple Adas Shalom Procedures Manual. We have
highlighted key items that every adult member
should be doing as their part to help us stay safe and
secure while at our temple facility. Today’s climate
has cautioned us to be more vigilant and your
Security Committee and our Security Officers with
be more proactive in checking these practices.
PLANNING A TEMPLE EVENT?

Security, Buildings and Grounds, Tecg
and Admin.

REMINDER: This form should be filled
out for ALL Temple events
SECURITY CHECKPOINTS FOR EVENTS AND MEETINGS
Verify Security Officer coverage at least a week in advance with
Admin. or Security Team.
Request a member who has a building entry key to disarm the
alarm on arrival and set the alarm before leaving (after security
checks.)
Request all occupants to wear name badges.
Assign a greeter to be with the Security Officers to assess and
accept attendees.
Never prop doors open and leave them unattended.
To unload equipment or food, any door may be used and
propped, as long as it is monitored the entire time and then
closed, locked, and double-checked once complete.
A Checklist for closing the building after usage is posted in the
Kitchen by the Ice Machine. It includes thermostat settings,
Double-check that all doors that access the outdoors are fully
latched before setting the alarm.
All lights in the building are turned off except the candelabras in
both lobbies. (Bathroom lights are self-monitored.)
One new safety notice we would like families to assist with is help keep our children
in the sanctuary or social hall during services and onegs. If there be a need for
locking down, those two joined areas become one, locking those in the hallways out
for our protection.
If you attended our last “Countering Active Threat Training” or attended any of our
annual Religious School Teacher Security training updates, you should recall how
and when to help others into the secured area. If not, ask you’re a security
committee member, Paula, Pat, Stu, Evan, or Ken. (Takes 5 minutes!!)
Be Safe,
And thank you to those who saw something and said something!
