Trout-standing
top prize for
photographer
A Christchurch man who
captured the moment his wife
landed a stunning fish has
netted the top prize in Fish &
Game’s ReWild Snap & Share
licence photo competition.
Radek Baus took the winning
image of his wife, Lucie Baus,
with her brown trout at a
West Coast river – though he
is keeping the location under
wraps.
The result was decided by a
public
The Star,
vote
January
from four
23, 2025
monthly
winners, each showcasing what
getting out on the water is all
about – family, fun and fish.
Baus takes home a $1000
Kilwell voucher, and his photo
will appear on the 2026/27 Fish
& Game fishing licence.
Lucie The Star, Baus January recalled 23, 2025 the
moment the shot was taken:
“The day was calm, and the fish
was cruising along the edge of
a deep pool. I crawled close to
the shore, set the trap, and the
fly did the job perfectly. The fish
weighed perhaps 4-4.5kg.”
Fish & Game New Zealand
chief operating officer Richie
Cosgrove said the result
was a great outcome for the
organisation.
“The winning image captures
a magic moment and the joy
of landing a good fish, and the
public clearly agrees.
“For us, it also provides a
wonderful opportunity to
showcase women out there on
the water, reflecting the growing
popularity of angling for
women,” he said.
Radek Baus’ winning image of his wife Lucie Baus with her brown trout at a river on the West Coast.
“All four finalists were
incredibly strong images, which
made the public vote all the
more meaningful. Thank you
to everyone who entered and
voted.”
Kilwell director Amanda Wells
said her team was excited to be
part of the competition.
Pacific treasures
on display at
art gallery
Cora-Allan
Wickliffe
A new exhibition at the
Christchurch Art Gallery
celebrates the enduring
significance of Pacific art and
craft practices.
Made in the Pacific: A Collection
of Tāoga will see 50
treasured objects from Canterbury
Museum’s Pacific
collections on display until
October 11 with contemporary
artworks.
The gallery invited multidisciplinary
artist and curator
Cora-Allan Wickliffe to curate
the exhibition.
Wickliffe worked closely with
Canterbury Museum curator
Māori, Pacific,
and Indigenous
human histories,
Hatesa
Seumanutafa, to
select the taoga.
The museum’s
Pacific collections
include
about 300,000
objects, ranging
from textiles
and personal adornments to
tools and lithics (stone artefacts).
Some of oldest tāoga in
the exhibition are upeti fala,
traditional rubbing boards
made using the midrib of
coconut leaves, which arrived
at the museum in 1897.
“The connection Made in the
Pacific makes between the historic
tāoga and the makers of
today is very important,” said
Wickliffe.
“The six contemporary artists
I have included are all interested
in matauranga from the
Pacific – traditional ideas, materials
and forms. This exhibition
celebrates that bridging of past
and present, and looks at how
we might move forward to the
future.”
The customary tāoga on
display represent skilled artmaking
traditions from Samoa,
Niue, Hawai’i, Fiji, Rapa Nui,
Papua New Guinea, Tahiti and
elsewhere across the Pacific.
Visitors will see large-scale
pieces, small samples and
several items that demonstrate
the use of natural dyes, such
as indigo, turmeric and smoke.
There will also be a range of
tools on display, many of which
bear the marks and wear of
frequent use.
Six contemporary artists –
Serene Hodgman, Sue Pearson,
Doron Riki-Semu, Pauline Reynolds,
Louisa Afoa and Jimmy
Ma’ia’i – also have work in the
A barkcloth art work from Niue known as a hiapo. Below – Serene Hodgman’s Va’ai Lau Fuala’au/See My Pretty Flower
includes silk ribbons on segments of woven plastic mat.
PHOTOS: CANTERBURY MUSEUM / MASTERWORKS GALLERY
exhibition. Said gallery lead
curator Felicity Milburn: “It’s a
privilege to display these tāoga,
many of which have never
before been exhibited in this
way.
“We’re very grateful to Canterbury
Museum for their
significant and generous support
in making them available.
We are fortunate to have been
able to work with Cora-Allan,
who is renowned for her advocacy
for Pacific artmaking, past
and present.
“The conversation she has
generated between these tāoga
and the contemporary artworks
is exciting and powerful, and
we thank her for the vision,
knowledge and hard work that
have brought this exhibition to
life.”
A GUIDE OF HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS IN CANTERBURY

The Way
We Were
After building work started in 1918, The Sign of the Takahe, pictured in 1949, was finally completed in 1948 with an official
opening held the following year.
Around half a million bricks were used in the construction of New Regent St. A trial of its 400-lamp lighting prior to the
official opening drew a crowd of hundreds.
THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
March 30-April 5
Sign of the Takahe officially opens
On April 1, 1949, The Sign of the Takahe was officially opened, marking the
completion of a vision first championed by city councillor
Harry Ell more than 40 years earlier. Ell had pushed for a
network of scenic reserves across the Port Hills, linked by
the Summit Rd and supported by rest houses where travellers
could stop and refresh. Several of these, including the Sign
of the Bellbird, Sign of the Kiwi and Sign of the Packhorse,
were completed during Ell’s lifetime, all designed by architect
Samuel Hurst Seager. The Sign of the Takahe, however, was
intended as the grandest of them all and would not be finished
until long after Ell’s death in 1934.
Construction began in 1918, with the partially completed
building– then known as the Tram Terminus Rest House
– opening in 1920, serving as both a tram stop and tearoom to help offset
costs. Progress was repeatedly delayed by financial difficulties, disputes, the
Depression and war, stretching the project over three decades. The building was
finally completed in 1948 and officially opened the following year. It continued
to operate as a restaurant and tearoom until sustaining damage in the 2010-11
earthquakes, after which it was restored and strengthened, and now serves as a
functions and wedding venue.
Official opening of New Regent St
New Regent St officially opened on April 1, 1932, transforming a site with a
colourful past into one of the city’s most distinctive streets. Once known as
the Circus Paddock, the area had hosted travelling circuses before evolving
through a series of uses, including skating rinks, a boot factory, a taxi stand,
the city’s first picture theatre – the Colosseum – and even a used car yard. In
1929, councillor George Gould proposed redeveloping the site
to help ease congestion on Colombo Street. Construction was
carried out by P. Graham and Son Ltd, and while the name
“Regent Street” was initially suggested, the council opted for
“New Regent Street” to avoid confusion with an existing street
in Sydenham.
Built in the Spanish Mission style using around half a million
bricks, the street was completed in late March 1932. Its 400-
lamp lighting system drew hundreds of curious residents when
it was first switched on for a trial, ahead of the official evening
opening led by mayor Dan Sullivan. From the outset, the street
reflected a diverse and enterprising community, with a number
Harry Ell
George Gould
of women among its early business owners, including fishmonger Amelia Shaw
and restaurateurs Aileen Agnes O’Donel and Gwendoline Alice Aldred, who
ran the Kandy Kitchen. In 1986, a one-way restriction was imposed until 1994
and turned into a pedestrian mall in preparation for the reintroduction of the
Christchurch tram. Due to its coherent architectural character, the buildings in
the streets are listed as Category I heritage items by Heritage New Zealand.
Bishopdale Hearing – your only comprehensive,
locally owned audiologist in Canterbury
I’m Bradi, and
I own Bishopdale
Hearing, your local
audiology clinic
at the front of
Bishopdale Village
Mall.
I can’t believe it’s
been four years
since opening the
clinic!
We are one
of the few truly
independent audiology clinics in
Christchurch. This means I own and
operate 100% of our little practice, and
we have no financial ties to any other
company nor hearing aid manufacturer.
When you choose to see us, you can
feel safe knowing you are receiving an
honest professional opinion and won’t
feel like a ‘number’.
Not only are we super fun and relaxed,
but we are also the only comprehensive
audiology clinic in the Canterbury area
– meaning we offer a lot more than just
hearing aids! Two specialties that not
many other Audiologists provide are
Auditory Processing Assessments with
Auditory Training, and Audio-Vestibular
(Balance) Assessments along with Vertigo
Rehabilitation.
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
is estimated to affect 6-10% of New
Zealanders, often noted in children
or people who may have suffered
certain conditions such as a head
injury or stroke. This can occur in
people of any age, with or without
hearing loss. Symptoms include
struggling to understand speech in a
noisy environment, understanding or
remembering multi-step instructions
or becoming tired/frustrated trying to
listen. APD can also be related to poor
reading comprehension and sometimes
attention-deficit disorders.
Our full Audio-Vestibular (Balance)
Assessments are for people who may be
suffering from ongoing balance issues
in the inner ear (called the vestibular
system). We assess parts of the vestibular
system to see whether any balance issues
are related to the ear or whether they
may be neurological in nature. We also
see people who have a sudden onset of
Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo
(usually just called vertigo) and we treat
this immediately in clinic.
Our clinical team are all members of
the New Zealand Audiological Society
(NZAS), meaning we regularly access all
avenues of funding such as the Disability
Support Services, ACC, Veterans Affairs
and more. We are Southern Cross
members and registered with local Iwi
organisations for healthcare funding
access.
We accept donations of second-hand
hearing aids and fit them to people who
• Earwax Removals
• Outer Ear Infection Treatments
• Diagnostic Hearing Tests
• Hearing Aid Fittings
• Second-Hand Hearing Aids
• Auditory Processing Disorder Assessments
• Auditory Training and Therapy
• Vestibular (Balance) Assessments
• Vertigo Tests and Rehabilitation
• Custom-Made Moulds and Earplugs
Our awesome team now consists of:
Jo (administrator, Mon-Fri) ; Kate (Part Time Receptionist - Sundays/late-nights) ;
Bradi (Audiologist & Owner) ; Emma (Ear Nurse & Provisional Audiometrist) ;
Corey (Audiologist) ; Hazel Stahl (Part Time Audiologist - not pictured).
cannot afford new devices – if you have
hearing aids sitting in your drawer at
home, please consider donating them
to us! We are always looking to make
hearing healthcare more accessible.
We are also so thankful to have
won two awards – a Rotary Club local
business award after being nominated
by one of our patients, and also the SBA
Small Business of the Year (runner-up)
award.
We’d love to see you in the clinic!
already have an existing denture,
we’re usually able to add that
tooth to your denture. This can
be done either before or after the
tooth has been taken out.
